More than 50 yea~s have elapsed since E. C. N elson and H. B. jones joined 31 other d edicated Univ ersity of T exas students to form Acacia frat ernity on that campus. Sinc e that April 6, 1916 foundin g, this Chapter has enjoyed remarkable growth and progress. To celebrate th eir 50th Anniversary, found ers N elson and jones return ed to th eir Chapter this spring to marvel at this phenomenal success. Th ey w ere joined by National judge Advocate ]. B. Beaird and several other distinguished guests. Mor e than 50 alumni and their wives w ere wined and din ed during a weekend which included breakfasts, lunch es, brunches, parties, and banquets.

Many Acacians renewed fond friendships inhibited by expanses of time and space.

It .seems fitting, therefor e, for th e TRIAD to salute the T exas Chapt er at its half century mark ... as a tribute to its great past and present. In order to do this, th e TRIAD will present below a resume of several aspects of this Chapt er's past history and present status. In addition, two original essays by T exas Acacians Micha el Hood and Bill Hamilton will appear. Th eir topics, pledge training and rush, should be of more universal interest-hence, their inclusion in greater d epth.

AT THE HALF CENTURY

Traditions The Texas Chapter of Acacia has inherited much of its rich tradition from its ties with the national fraternity. These traditions are evident in the pledging ceremony, the formal rush openings and closings, and most of all in the inspirational initiation process. The Texas Chapter is steeped in national ritual and it has supplemented them with many local traditions.

Among these local traditions is the serenade.

This serves to promote Chapter unity during song practice preparation and furthers good campus relations (especially among sororities on campus!).

Another local tradition is the pledge beerbust, held every fall at the end of formal rush.

It has become traditional for the infant pledge class to organize a drinking prank for the Chapter Rush and Venerable D ean. Last fall, two Greyhound buses were chartered for members and new pledges, and the bust was held in the mountains west of Austin. As in the past, a rousing good time was experienced by all-serving to promote brotherhood early in the year, and helping the infant pledge class fit into the fraternity more easily.

Two other local traditions merit attention.

This Chapter utilizes a rather large memorial fountain on the University of Texas campus for dunking ceremonies. Birthdays, pinnings, and campus honors are "legitimate" excuses for such an "honorary dunking." A more serious affair is the annual Christmas Party for Orphans. Each year local orphans are treated to this memorable event, which includes the traditional giving of presents, tree trimming, and padded Acacia Santa Claus. One Texas Acacian, Gary Todd, reports that this " ... tradition has been so effective, that members look forward to it annually and refer to it frequently."

Social Junior D ean King Clymond reports that the overall function of the social program at Texas is "to foster brotherhood within the Chapter without interferring with grades." In keeping with that spirit, this Chapter has had the second largest number of parties for the past four years on campus while continuing to maintain a high scholastic ranking. At Texas the belief is that a good social program is very beneficial to scholastic progress-acting to relieve tension by fulfilling the need to do something in addi-

tion to studying. Nevertheles the Chapter ha never partied within two week of final .

Naturally, the majority of the ocial calendar was made up of parties thi past year. Diver ity was the key to party succe . Many type of partie were produced. The most prevalent was the house party, often centered around a theme.

Match parties were al o organized, however.

These were arranged with a sorority, the social chairmen of both groups matching names. One of the most enjoyable of these matching parties was centered around a western theme, and was appropriately held at a local party barn. The Chapter also produced shared parties, in which expenses and activity planning was hared with another fraternity on camus. Informal T.G.I.F. (Thank Goodness, it's Friday), lake parties apartment gatherings, and IFC-Panhellenic sponsored Sing-Song competition helped roundout the Chapter's social calendar.

The most formal and traditional of social events is the annual Black and Gold Formal.

Usually held the first weekend in May, this gala event is the climax of week of activities and preparations. An integral part of this celebration is the nominating and final selection of the Acacia Sweetheart.

While the functions previously mentioned involved the whole Chapter, there were also functions for pledges only-such as get-togethers with the pledge classes of various sororities.

These included picnics, work days, and "stealthe meals."

It should be noted that, unlike some fraternities on the Texas campus, Acacia worked completely within a budget. Social was carefully planned. There were only two assessments (Spring formal and Christmas party), so every member always could anticipate his expenses.

Campus Activities Acacians at Texas have been active participants in all major campus activities. These include student government, college councils (these are organized through the various colleges of the University to obtain student opinion and advise concerning academic affairs), as well as scholastic and social honoraries. In addition, campus social activities have also benefitted by Acacia participation.

In student government, for example, Grey Lipscomb was elected president of the student body and David Cappell Chief Justice of the Student Court. Acacians Walter Hall and Bob Collie serve in the Student Assembly for the College of Arts and Sciences, and Charles Oliver and Jenks Garrett were chosen to represent the College of Business Administration.

Garrett has also been elected to serve his second term as president of the College of Business Administration Council. Other positions of importance held by Acacians in student government include: Ken Roberson, Senior class President, and Charles Oliver, Sophomore Class President.

Scholarship Continued improvement has been the scholarship story at Texas, in both absolute and comparative terms. In the fall of 1962, the Texas Chapter ranked 22nd among 33 fraternities, with a grade point average of 1.202 (on a 3.0 scale). After a successful scholarship program in 1965, the Chapter was 4th with an overall

C.P.A. of 1.604. The climb from 22nd to 4th among fraternities in the last four years demonstrates the effectiveness of this Chapter's scholarship program.

Some facets of this scholastic program includes a new type of study program offered by the I.F.C.-called the Peer-to-Peer Counseling System: mandatory study hall for all pledges; examination files of old tests; formation of a new fraternity library (with approximately $400 worth of new books being dona ted) , and the utilization of a unique scholarship program called the Acacia Educational Foundation. This Foundation is the only organization of its kind on the Texas campus, and provides financial aid to both members of the fraternity and nonmembers (Berge Garabedian, foreign student in resident at Acacia, w.as provided financial assistance by the Foundation). During the 196566 school year, $1400 in scholarships were awarded. With this scholastic record and program, it is not surprising that Scholarship Chairman Thomas Shelton was able to report

"the Chapter is rapidly becoming well-known for its emphasis on scholarship."

Financ es No Chapter can operate successfully in the areas described above without a solid financial foundation upon which to operate. The Texas Chapter has maintained such a financially solvent position.

Treasurer James Turner reports that during the past two years the Chapter income was approximately $80,000 per year. An annual budget utilized effectively the income derived from monthly bills to its members. The average bill for an active member living and eating in the house was $112. The bill for an active not living and eating in the house was $51. Bills were due on the lOth of each month, and a penalty of l0 7o was added to late bills. A local accountant was employed to handle finances and to work with the Chapter Treasurer. These are the main characteristics of this Chapter's financial status.

PLEDGE TRAINING REPORT by Bill H amilton Pledge Tra iner

The Texas Chapter of Acacia feels that an integral part of the excellent growth it has achieved in the past several years is a continual evaluation and improvement of its pledge-training program. Without this evaluation and accompanying improvement, effective pledge training would become an impossibility. And without effective pledge training, the active csapter's desire for growth is replaced by stagnation as a result of its failure to get new members interested in fraternity operations while they are pledges. Thus, it is only natural that the opinion of this chapter is that pledge training is not and cannot be the sole duty of the pledge trainer a lone; rather, it is the responsibility of the entire active chapter. The goal of the fraternity, then, has been to work as a collective unit to orient and train each pledge according to his own capacity, in order to develop each pledge into the best possible active. The growth of the chapter thus becomes a collective, progressive process that includes actives and p ledges a like.

What constitutes the "good" active? ... the ideal that this chapter aims for with each of its members. The answer is a simple one a good active is a person who recognizes the needs and objectives of the fraternity and strives to fulfill these needs and accomplish these objectives as an individual. Being a good active is not a temporal thing-it is a lifetime proposition, for, a good active is a person who becomes a thoughtful member of and an asset to society, and as mentioned in the Acacia Preamble) "will seek the truth, and knowing it, give light to those with whom he may become acquainted as he travels along life's pathway." He must be a good active in his community as well as a good active in his fraternity.

All of the above relate to the purposes of the fraternity, with which the training of pledges must be consistent. These purposes are many and diverse, but for simplification may be summarized into four categories: group living and social development ; understanding ourselves and others; inspiring high ideas; and developing leadership.

The Texas Chapter of Acacia endeavors to teach men to live with their brothers and achieve social grace and responsibility through this relationship. The fraternity offers an opportunity for the individual to satisfy himself through personal and collective associations. But, at the same time, it does not feel that the fraternity is an institution through which the individual is to be matured. This will occur naturally without the chapter's trying to act as the individual's "collective conscience."

Pledgeship in this chapter is a period of preparation

for active membership. It is a period of the pledge's evaluation of the fraternity in relation to his personality, motivation and need . At the same time it is the period through which the fraternity must instill within its pledges a sincere desire to become actives by earning their respect and admiration. Thus, only by producing actives who are aware of this purpose, and are willing to be responsible for achieving this purpose, can the fraternity hope to progress. In the past five years the Texas Chapter has made tremendous strides in this direction and is looking forward to even further progress through continuous evaluation and re-evaluation of all facets of fraternity purpose and activity.

The following discussion will attempt to outline Texas Chapter's achievements in pledge training.

Pledge Class Organization. Leadership development was achieved by the use of the Pledge Executive Council. This operated in much the same way as did the Executive Council of the active chapter. The pledge class elected officers who, under the leadership of the pledge trainer, met at least once a week to discuss the business to be covered in the pledge meetings. This allowed the officers a chance to organize their thoughts and present them to the group. Thus, by teaching the officers of the pledge class the method of organization used by the active chapter, they became prepared to take an important and responsible role in fraternity activity when they become actives. At the same time, the pledge class as a whole was presented each week with a unified and organized program to follow. Organized pledges became organized actives and thus improved the organization of the active chapter upon initiation. Furthermore, through his organization the pledge class became familiar with meetings' procedure by Robert's Rules of Order, thus making a more efficient operation possible.

Grades. From the outset of their first semester, the pledge class was instilled with the feeling of importance that the active chapter places upon academic achievement. To further this achievement, the pledges were advised of their responsibility to the University, the fraternity, and themselves to do their best academically.

They were counseled, usually through a speech made early in the semester on how to study. Each pledge had a "big brother" who, besides becomes his closest ally in the active chapter, kept a running record of his grades and urged him to study. In add ition, a chapter study hall was manned by actives at all times to set a good example for the pledges, who were required to spend 16 hours each week in this study hall. A grade check was made with the University at mid-semester, and those pledges whose grade average was "B" or above were

excused from coming to study hall for the remainder of the semester. At this same time, the pledges who were failing to maintain a "C" average or better were brought before a "Scholarship Board" and their cases discussed, mainly to discover the reasons for their failures to do proper work and to remedy the situation.

The pledges were also given a list of persons who were most talented in various field of study, so that they might take advantage of the opportunity to be tutored in their most difficult courses. In addition, the Chapter House maintained a current file of old quizzes and homework from most courses.

All of these pains were taken by this chapter because no matter how well a pledge was developed in all his training he could not become an active without meeting the grade requirements. It should be pointed out here that the pledge class last semester had an overall grade point average of 1.7 on 3.0 system. This mean that many members have been initiated who wi ll not be in danger of "flunking out," which only strengthened the manpower of the chapter.

Pledge Duties and R esponsibilities. In learning to work as a group and to earn the right to become an active, the pledges in this chapter were required to perform certain tasks. These tasks were designed to be beneficial to the chapter as a whole and not detrimental to the pledge. They consisted of various repairs and maintenance on the chapter house, and required participation in party decorating, float-building, and other activities in which the fraternity participated.

These duties enabled the pledges to learn the responsibilities entailed with being a good Acacian and the difficulty in becoming an Acacian.

In addition to the responsibilities mentioned above, the pledge was required to learn the meaning of Acacia.

This was accomplished by the obvious method: he learned the material in Pythagoras. An assignment was made each week, accompanied by a short lecture on the material, and a quiz on the previous week's assignment.

Pledges who failed the quizzes were required to come to Saturday morning work parties as punishment. Thus they were made to see the importance of the pledge material and were educated as to the history and meaning of Acacia so essential to becoming a good member.

This was also fine preparation for a meaningful initiation.

The Texas Chapter's policy was that the building of good Acacians has been and will continue to be the responsibility of the entire active chapter. This purpose was achieved by pursuing a sane program of physical and mental development.

EMPHASIS TEXAS

RUSH REPORT

For the Texas Chapter of Acacia, rush is a year-round function. Since the Memphis Conclave, the chapter has strived to maintain an attitude of rush consciousness. On the Texas campus, this type of an attitude is absolutely essential because 33 fraternities are active in rush. Under the leadership of the rush chairman, rush has become second nature to the members. In the past 2 years, we have found that rush is most effective divided into three distinct and active periods-open rush, summer rush and formal rush.

Organization is the watchword of the program. The effectiveness of the chapter's open rush can largely be attributed to the establishment of a rush committee comprised of two new initiates, an upperclassman active, and the rush chairman. Our rush chairman annually apportions the rushees among the members of the rush committee. The committeeman responsible for a particular rushee sees that his rushee is brought to dinner and to social functions. He is also responsible for checking on the rushee's grades, thereby giving the chapter more grounds on which to judge the rushee. This system has worked particularly well during the past spring; out of eight spring pledges, all but one have over a 2.0 G.P.A. on a 3.0 system). The other pledge presently has a 1.6.

The chapter began open rush last fall by creating a new pledge class office-that of pledge class rush chairman. In addition to securing rush names from the pledge class, this pledge class officer was made responsible for notifying the rush chairman when secretive pledge functions were to be carried out. One example was a pledge prank in connection with a sorority p ledge class. The pledge class rush chairman contacted several of the highpriority rushees and invited them to participate, an act which had the effect of making the rushee feel a part of the group.

The University of Texas annually designates the first weekend in April as Round-Up Weekend. The Texas Chapter takes full advantage, inviting many high school rushees to the house for rush parties. During Round-Up '66, Acacia invited 167 high school rushees to Round-Up parties and meals. Since this is usually the high school

rushee's first contact with a college fraternity, members are careful to see that he has a good time and meets as many Acacia members as possible. For this reason, the Chapter planned a barbecue at the house Friday afternoon in order to orient the rushees and to help them get acquainted before the Friday and Saturday night parties.

The chapter provided quarters in the house for as many rushees as possible. The following Sunday morning, breakfast was served at the house so that the rushees could take one last look at Acacia before they returned home.

Once Round-Up was over, the chapter began a new program of inviting local high school seniors to dinner.

Two or three boys were invited each night during the last few weeks of school, and the boys were given a good rush in preparation for the summer.

The Texas Chapter's most vital rush comes in the summer, a time when organization really counts. One of the biggest tasks is to keep up a steady line of communication between the brothers who are dispersed over the state. This is accomplished annually by locally-devised rush-a-grams-mimeographed communications designed to stimulate members to rush and periodically mailed by the rush chairman. The first rush-o-gram of the summer usually includes a list of everyone's summer address.

Succeeding rush-o-grams contain such information as directions to the parties, how many high school rushees have been signed up for formal rush in the fall, rush progress, helpful hints, and many other notes and vital communications.

In early May, the plans for the summer rush program were laid; these included three major rush parties in Dallas, Houston and Austin, choosing area rush captains, and compiling the rush book.

The rush chairman appointed area rush captains to be in charge of coordinating rush in their areas of the state. Before school was out, the area rush chairmen met with the rush chairman to set up general procedures for the areas. This meeting was designed to educate the area rush captains in the particulars of rush so that they could pass on information to the men in the area, and so that they could be equipped to meet any problems which

might arise. The area rush captains set up periodic meetings throughout the summer (one a week for June, two in July and August) in order to allow the area members to iron out problems and to plan small rush parties for the area. The area rush parties which were planned were lake parties-or stag parties with hamburgers, etc.

In addition, each area has planned two or three larger parties at one of the member's houses or the house of one of the area alums. When the time comes for one of the three state-wide rush parties, the area captains see that as many rushees as possible are taken to the party for the weekend. Each rushee who is invited receives a rush card telling him the dates of the rush parties. The area captains contact the rush party area captain and tell him how many members and rushees to expect from his area, how many dates the rushees will need, and whether they need a place to stay. When a state-wide party is to be held in his area, that area captain is responsible for all of the arrangements for that weekend.

The state-wide rush party is begun by a stag party at Lake Austin Saturday afternoon. This provides an opportunity for good rush and also a chance to make certain that rushees feel at home at the party that night.

The Saturday night party is coat-and-tie at a local country club. These state-wide rush parties are not only good for rush, but they also give the brothers an opportunity to get together and talk over plans for next year.

At Texas, summer rush is directed toward getting a good nucleus pledge class to help the chapter during the hectic week of formal rush. The average rushee is very impressed by a fraternity that already has a pledge class he can fit right into. Making the rushee feel at home is a main goal during formal rush. In pledging 43 boys this past fall, the chapter made sincerity a chief aim.

A final segment of the Texas Chapter's rush program consists of recognizing those members who contribute the most in rush. Each fall after formal rush, the rush trophy is presented by the rush chairman to the man whom he feels has worked the hardest on rush. During open rush, individual ribbon awards are presented to the member who is instrumental in pledging a particular boy.

The not-so-foreign student in residence at the Acacia house this year, and next, is Berge Garabedian. Berge is Armenian, and was born in Beirut, Lebanon. He lived in Beirut until the age of 14, vvhen he moved to Nicosia, Cyprus, where he completed his secondary ed ucation.

Berge returned to Beirut after graduation where he attended college during his freshman year. He received a Danish government scholarship for underdeveloped countries, and attended the University of Copenhagen for 3 years. He received a degree in Physical Education and obtained part time employment as a Physical Education Instructor at the American University of Beirut.

In the summer of 1965 he returned to Denmark-visiting schools and hospitals on his own to learn about Physio-Therapy.

of Acacia. Berge speaks Armenian, English, French, Arabic, Danish, and Turkish fluently, which should open many doors once his degree in Physical-Therapy is obtained at Texas. He stated that he also might return to Beirut and work towards a degree in Political Science at the American University of Beirut. Some of Berge's impressions of Acacia follow:

TRIAD ESSA The ''We- TheyÂť Fallacy In almost all federal arrangements there is an ever-present danger for a "we-they" attitude to develop. We often find this attitude in political controversies between the federal government and the various state governments. In fraternity matters it is sometimes expressed in terms of "we" the local Chapter and "they" the far-off National organization. Several factors should be noted with respect to this false dichotomy.

The "we" attitude that often develops in the local Chapter usually is the result of a parochial bias towards fraternity affairs. We often get so wrapped-up in our own local Chapter activities and problems that the larger picture of Acacia Fraternity is somewhat neglected.

Fraternal principles, traditions, ideals, and friendships are usually experienced in the local context and often become identified solely with that part of the fraternity.

The fact that so many of these ideals, traditions, and even friendships, transcend the local Chapter was observed in practice by this writer at the recent installation of the San Jose Chapter. Acacians from as far as Long Beach and Arizona traveled hundreds of miles in order to participate in the "birth" of a new Chapter. The Cal Chapter at Berkeley spearheaded the operation, especially with respect to ritual implementation. The sharing of common principles was reflected in the more formal activities, such as the banquet and ritual proceedings; common friendships were renewed and established at the informal "bull sessions," swimming pool activities, and casual meals.

It is at regional meetings such as this that we can more fully experience our common heritage and mutual stake in the future. Such gatherings (e.g., Province retreats, regional basketball tournaments, inter-Chapter social events, etc.) ought to be encouraged and actively supported by all of us. In addition, our National Conclave will also do a great deal to remind us of our common bonds. It is important for us to try and perpetuate the unifying spirit and collective conscience which "strengthens the ties of friendship, one with another."

If we continue in that spirit, the "we-they" fallacy need never divide our common purpose.

PRESIDENT

George F. Patterson Jr. was elected Acacia's National President in 1962. Not the first Patterson to be an Acacian, George Sr. had been initiated into the Iowa Chapter over fifty years ago (See the last issue of TRIAD-"Acacia Salutes Its Fifty Year Members" ) and had served as Venerable Dean of his Chapter.

Our National President reports to TRIAD that he was first introduced to Acacia by his father who took him to visit the Chapter at Cincinnati University. "After several months of looking over the various fraternities on the campus," he commented, "I chose Acacia."

George Patterson went on to serve as Junior Dean and Senior Dean.

World War II came along to interrupt his pre-law studies and the Cincinnati Chapter's activities. Like most of the others, George Patterson went into the armed services. Returning from active duty in the Fall .

ern California Chapter and later became its Chapter Advisor.

For his service to Acacia he has received Tri-Chapter Award from three California chapters (UCLA, USC, and California State College

at Long Beach ) for his service to the Acacians of that state. In addition, Amos is among the ranks of Acacia's Award of Merit winners. His special help to local Acacia chapters is of special note. He was on the installa- ~

active with the alumni, first as chairman of the building committee, and later as president of the Iowa Acacians (the reactivated alumni group).

Marv reports for the Triad how he was introduced to the national

Following military service Bivert returned to the Oklahoma State University staff in capacity of Assistant Dean of Men, a position he held until 1952. From 1952 to date,

he has been Director of Financial Aids at Oklahoma State University.

Featured in this issue of The TRIAD are photos covering the Installations this spring of Acacia's four new Chapters--at University, Alabama; San Jose, California; Athens, Georgia; and Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. This development and growth sets a record unprecedented up to this time--but it could well be experienced again during the coming year • • • • The Colony at Tennessee is making excellent progress, and we are tentatively looking forward to a chartering date this fall.

On June 26 a new Colony was formally established at Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana, by the formal pledging of representatives of Sigma Mu Sigma; Harvey Logan was assisted in the ceremonies by Dave L. Waibel, Venerable Dean of the Purdue Chapter. This old and well-established group of many year's standing on the campus, with membership requirements similar to ours, should move along rapidly to the Chapter stage.

We anticipate formal pledging of Colony members at the University of Houston this fall. This project is being sponsored and assisted by actives and alumni of the Texas Chapter.

A few weeks ago the Interfraternity Council of Kansas State Teacher's College at Emporia, Kansas, invited Acacia to consider colonization there.

The situation on that campus has been investigated by Field Secretary Cal Hultman, who recommends it highly.

Just last week the Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of New Mexico asked us to consider--and recommended colonization at--the University of New Mexico, and offered his assistance. Negotiations are now in progress.

We are informed that the Oregon State Chapter and alumni are programming for the reactivation of the old Oregon Chapter.

The current TRIAD Directory reflects a change which we are sorry to report. Field Secretary Cal Hultman left the staff in June to accept a position of managing the political campaign of Mr. Scherley, a candidate for the U. S. Congress in the State of Iowa. We are extremely sorry to lose the active participation of Cal who, in his year on the staff, contributed outstandingly to the Chapter and alumni operations. He has received high praise from many, many sources, and he left with great reluctance--but felt he could not turn down an opportunity in his chosen field.

However, we know that Acacia has not lost his interest and devotion.

Within a matter of hours after Cal's resignation from the field staff, Harvey Logan secured a replacement by the acceptaance of Barry J. Lyerly, who has already demonstrated his ability and knowledge through his Editorship of The TRIAD. Barry has long been interested in joining the staff, and we feel fortunate that he has accepted the appointment. This will add greatly to his responsibilities, as Barry will continue to edit The TRIAD until more permanent arrangements can be made.

Conclave arrangements are now complete. We will be honored again by the presence of National Founder and Mrs. Charles A. Sink. And just recently we were informed that Mrs. Lucille Malcolm will also be in attendance to present once more the famed Malcolm Award, established by her husband, the late and revered Founder, Judge George A. Malcolm.

B.U. Acacian Selected Greek King~ and Intramural Athlete of The Year Frank A. Hirsch was selected Greek King for ilhe 1966 Greek Week at Boston University, and Intramural Athlete of the Year.

Selection of Greek King is on scholarship, leadership in your own fraternity and IFC, participation in university affairs, poise, character, and personality.

He also won the Intramural Athlete of the Year Award. Frank participated in nine different intramural sports, and helped BU Acacia earn fifth place out of fifty-four intramural teams.

Frank was Chaplain, Secretary, Song Master, and Rush Chairman for the fraternity, and Rush Ohairman for the IFC.

2nd Lt. Frederick Engelman Colorado

Acacians from two states were members of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point graduating class that was addressed by Vice President Hubert Humphrey on June 8.

Cadet Frederick Engelman Jr. of Boulder, Colorado (University of Colorado Chapter) was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force. From Poplar Bluff, Missouri and the University of Missouri, Cadet Bruce H. Schremp was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps. Both also receive a bachelor of science degree.

Colorado Senator Gordon Allott had appointed Fred Engelman to the Academy after a year at the University of Colorado. In addition to being an active member of the Acacia chapter, Fred was a part of the Air Force RO"J1C unit at C.U. At the academy, Fred was a member of the debate council and forum and the ski, sky, mountaineering and rocket clubs. During his senior year he held the rank of sergeant in the Corps of Cadets.

Bruce Schremp was appointed to the Academy by Senator Stuart Symington of Missouri. He had graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1961 and then attended the University of Missouri at Rolla where he became a member of Acacia. As a senior at the Academy, Bruce held the rank of sergeant first class in the Corps of Cadets and was a training sergeant. He was also a member of the French and Mathematics clubs and a numeral winner in freshman baseball.

Rensselaer Alum ~romoted to Rowan Vice President The President of the Rowan Controller announced the appointment of Rensselaer Acacian, Phillip G. Eaton to the position of Vice President and General Sales Manager of the corporation.

Mr. Eaton joined Rowan in 1955 as a salesman and has run fihe gamut of experience in the management of numerous selling and marketing functions. A B29 Navigator in World War II, he graduated from Rensselear Polytechnic with an electrical engineering degree, joined Arrow-Hart and Hegeman Electric Company in 1950 and took time out to fly 65 missions in Korea as a B26 Navigator. He lives in Randallstown, Maryland with his wife Carol and seven children.

Silver Wings for Indiana Acacian Second Lieutenant John L. Cantwell, an Acacia member from Indiana University, rhas been awarded U. S. Air Force silver pilot wings upon graduation at Webb AFB, Tex. Lieutenant Cantwell is being assigned to Hahn AB, Germany for flying duty with the U. S. Air Forces in Europe, America's ¡ overseas air arm assigned to NATO. The lieutenant, a graduate of Spencer High School, received his A.B. degree in Spanish from Indiana University, and was commissioned there upon completion of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps program.

MSU Acacian Selected for Woodrow Wilson Fellowship The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation has announced the granting of a fellowship to Jerry W . Dallas of Mississippi State University. This

Gary Heesacker was elected senator to the School of Business and Technology. Gary has been active in several honoraries of his academic sohool, plays varsity football, and edits the chapter rush pamphlet. Also elected was Herbert Hammond as senator to the School of Forestry. Herb has a!so been active in honoraries of his academic school, and is now house scholarship chairman. He was named outstanding freshman Naval ROTC contract student, and was recently tapped for Blue Key, National Men's scholastic achievement and contribution Honorary-a fine award indeed.

Herb was elected to his position on¡ the primary ballot by virtue of polling a majority of the votes cast.

Prizes were awarded to the largest couples-measured by waist size-and as usual, a good time was had by all.

Cincinnati Charter Member Dies Wilfred G. Schubert, 66, charter member of Acacia 's University of Cincinnati Crhapter passed away.

Mr. Schubert had been among the forty members of the Fellowcraft Fraternity, an organization of Masonic Men who were installed as an Acacia Fraternity Chapter at the University in 1929 by fellow Acacians of the Indiana Chapter.

Mr. Schubert had been a vice president of Stearns & Foster Co., a one time instructor at the University and a member of Lodge No. 141 F & AM.

UCLA Sharpshooter Chris Bowles, of the UCLA Chapter of Acacia, was recently named to the collegiate AllAmerican Rifle Team. As top sharpshooter for the UCLA rifle team, Chris led his team to first place at the Western Conventional Intercollegiate Sectional at Berkeley with a near perfect score of 296. With his outstanding shooting ability, Chris has bagged first place in many highly competitive tournaments.

Last year, Chris won the Southern California Junior Regional, the Camp Pendelton Junior

International Match, and the Santa Monica International Match, while setting three national records and being named to the California State Team. This year, Chris kept right on target by winning a Indoor Junior Match, the Southern California Junior Sectional and then set three more national records in the Santa Monica International Match. Then, this April, "Bowles-eye" won the southern half of the California State Indoor Match and in the process became +he California State Juni¡or Champion. But this long list of triumphs is just a start, because Chris is only in his sophomore year.

Chris has also been active in the chapter house. In his second

In addition to his key, Maurice has received other honors including outstanding senior of the chapter, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Mu Upsilon, Senior Key and nomination for the Hood Achievement Award to the Outstanding Senior at New Hampshire.

In the world of campus politics, Acacian Bill Kiddar, a junior majoring in government, has been elected President of the Student Senate. Bill has represented the Chapter for the past year on the Senate and takes over the top job from another Acacian, Pete Spaulding.

Top honors among fellow Greeks went to Acacian Richard Yeaton, as he was elected to head the Inter-Fraternity Council as its President. Leading up to this election, Dick was the IFC representative from the house and the IFC Rush Chairman.

Three Generations of Acacians Acacia has become a tradition for the family of Edward R. Warren Sr., who was initiated into the Purdue Chapter. Graduating with an M.A. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1921, Alumnus Warren married another graduate of Purdue, his wife Mary.

They have two sons and four grandchildren-exactly 50f'o of whom are Acacians and in the engineering profession.

Like his father, Edward, Acacia Alumnus Eugene D. Warren graduated from the University of Purdue with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Eugene graduated from Purdue in 1951. He has two children ages eight and ten and is now Chief of Engineering for Theater National Te!evision Inc., New York.

The third generation of Acacians in the Warren family is made up of the two sons of Edward Warren Senior's second son, Edward Warren Jr. Grandson of the original Acacian Warren , Clifford W. Warren graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1965 with a Chemical engineering degree. His brother, J . Bruce Warren, is still an active member of the Minnesota Chapter of Acacia and will graduate in 1967.

Like the other Acacians of the family, Bruce is in engineering.

Penn State Acacian Given Key Vietnam Position A 30-year-old U.S. Air Force engineer from Acacia's Penn State Chapter has been selected for a key position in vital construction operations in Vietnam.

Captain Carrol P. Crombie will head a 50-man team of civil engineering specialists who will help erect facilities essential for U. S. operations in Southeast Asia.

The captain's team consists of highly skilled personnel from Air Training Command (ATC) bases throughout the United States who stay ready for immediate deployment as part of the Air Force's Operation Prime BEEF (Base Engineer Emergency Force).

Captain Crombie and his crew will attend a familiarization course in fie!d operations under Vietnamese environmental and wartime conditions prior to their 120-day deployment, which begins this month.

The captain is permanently assigned at ATC headquarters, Randolph AFB, Tex.

University Honors Penn State Alum Pennsylvania State University honored Acacian William D. Harkins with its Distinguished Alumni Award. Mr. Harkin was honored for his professional and community services since his 1922 graduation from Penn State's Law School. An outstanding teacher and World War I veteran before he began his !aw career with a large Philadelphia law firm, Harkin soon opened up his own law office. Today he heads his own law firm specializing in the fields of business, trust and probate law, and counseling of corporations and banking institutions; and he serves on the advisory board of the Philadelphia National Bank.

Two Acacians Promoted in AFROTC Two members of the Colorado State College Chapter of Acacia were recently promoted to the cadet rank of first lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC} unit at C.S.C. Charlie M. Huebner of Garden City, N. Y., and Robert 0. Freeman of Brighton, Colo., were the recipients of the promotions. In addition, both men were a lso appointed flight commanders. According to the U. S. Air Force, both men were selected on the basis of academic grades, outstanding ability and potential as Air Force officers.

Both Acacians, upon graduation and completion of AFROTC requirements, will be eligible for appointment as second lieutenants in the U. S. Air Force.

Books For Brothers Teachers, townspeople, and the members of Acacia's Central Missouri state chapter themselves have helped to put together an impressive chapter library.

Located in Acacia's section of the C.S.M.C. Fraternity Complex, the recently completed chapter library provides a large selection of books for members to choose from. The chapter librarian has cataloged them for easy reference. This new house improvement should be an asset to C .S.M.C.'s scholarship program.

Wabbits at Arizona In honor of the presence of Cal Hultman, Fie!d Secretary, ten members of a recently formed Alumni Association, and a visiting brother from the Wyoming Chapter, +he men of the Arizona Chapter recently held one of the most successful "White Wabbit" parties in the history of this tradition. Thirty-five young women of the U of A were initiated into the secret "Order of White Wabbits" by means of a unique ritual written and improved over the years by the brothers of Arizona Chapter. Under the

direction of Venerable Dean, Rick Thomsen and Junior Dean, John Rosso , the house was decorated and the basement transformed into a spacious rabbit hutch, filled with giant carrots and cabbage heads, deep hay and the sounds of a top local band. The Arizona climate provided a warm starlit night for the occasion, and the party soon spread out into the patio. The brothers, Alums and their dates, and even the chaperones, had a great time.

Britt was elected President of University Student Union. "R. C.'' has also served as head of a department in the Student Government Association. He remains active in the chapter as publications chairman and has served in the post of rush chairman as well as I.F.C. representative.

Fellow Acacians Witness 50 Year Masonic Award for Blogg Cecil F. Blogg received roll number 60 and was initiated into the University of Washington Chapter of Acacia in February of 1916, a few months after he had become a Master Mason in University Lodge # 141. Recently, Mr. Blogg was honored for his fifty year membership as a Mason.

In a ceremony attended by five fellow alumni of the Washington Acacia Chapter (Donald Nicholson #489, George A. Jensen #63, Grant Angle #409, Stephen Brown #129, and Dwight Benton #61) and eleven of his

old Masonic brothers before a stated meeting of University Lodge #141 Mr. Blogg received his 50 year pin and certificate.

Two other fifty year members of the University Lodge #141 are also Washington Acacians-Ciyde Green and Dwight Benton. A third Washington Acacian, George Jensen, will soon join their ranks. (For fifty years of membership in Acacia, "fRIAD is honoring Mr. Blogg and all fifty year Acacians.) A partial list ran in previous issue and will be continued in the next issue.

Lewis Arnold Dies: Famed Engineer

Senate and Assembly of the California State Legislature. Upon his retirement, Commendatory resolutions were passed to honor him by the City Council and State Legislature. His knowledge of the technical and administrative phases of engineering made him a leader in promoting freeways, streets, highways, and public works in the fast growing metropolis of Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife, Ruth and three children.

TRIAD unhappily notes the passing of a respected Acacia brother, Lewis E. Arnold. Brother Arnold died at the age of 69 after a long illness. He had retired in 1962 from his position of Engineer of Administration for the City of Los Angeles. And had been advisor to the City Council and a legislative representativ'e to the

Illinois Initiates Bell George Wilbur Bell was initiated as an honorary member of the Illinois Chapter of Acacia on February 5, 1966.

A complete list of his activities would fill a whole page, only a few of the more important ones will be incorporated here. He is an active sponsor of DeMolay. He has been very active in various activities concerned with the health of the old and the crippled.

Brother Bell is a life sponsor of the Knight Templar Eye Foundation in Indiana and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Knight's Templar Home for the Aged and Infirm.

One of the highest honors he has received was that of 33rd degree Mason at Detroit in 1964. Brother Bell's interest in higher education is intense and is evidenced by the fact i'hat he is a member of the Citizens' Committee of the University of Illinois.

This is Acacia's newest honorary member at the University of Illinois Chapter. It is clear that he exemplifies the Acacia motto exceptionally well.

owa State Scholars in University hampionship ifhe Acacia Iowa State Chapter college bowl team settled an old score and emerged as University hampions by defeating the Phi Delta Theta team in the finals of the University's college bowl competition. 'Defeated only in the finals last year by the Phi Delts, the Acacia team of Dave French, Dave Fifield, Bill Wolford, and Doug Jessen turned the tables on their rivals in this spring's competition.

Patterned after the television College Bowl Program, the Iowa State contest pits teams of players against each other and asks them questions from various fields of knowledge-Greek mythology, physiology, history, chemistry, athletics, University traditions, etc. The Iowa Chapter seemed to have the right combination of brains to defeat all comers in this tough competitive sport.

Colorado Acacians Active in Summer Theater

T1his Spring the Student Board of Communications at Colorado State University announced the appointment of Rob Allerheiligen as General Manager of KCSU-FM, a job with more responsibilities than honors. Rob is a junior majoring in Speech Arts. The campus radio station has been operating for about two school years and is the most popular FM station in the area. It features news reports every hour, a constant variety of music to please nearly every listener, and complete sports coverage. The highlight of ilhis year's operation was the eighty hour marathon during College Days this Spring to raise money to buy books for CSU's new library. Since Rob is always taking surveys of the listener's wants in a radio station and fulfilling their desires, success is surely granted during his tenure as General Manager.

Two Colorado University Acacians, one an alum and the other an active, have participated actively in the last play of the Boulder Community Theater season. For Arthur Miller's pulitzer-prize winning DEATH OF A SALESMAN, James Hutchinson ( 1950, Venerable Dean) both directed the production and acted the leading role of Willy Loman.

Dave Carson (1967) designed an expressionistic setting for the play.

The play was presented by the Nomad Players of Boulder from June 21st through 26th.

Hutchinson has been active in many theaters in Colorado and Minnesota since high school. For Carson this was his first experience in theater, and he was engaged to do the set because Hutchinson wanted an architectural setting (Dave is a student of architecture at C.U.)

Central State Acacians Win Three Yea,rs in a Row Senior 'Dean Harold Hammond looked like he could have used a third hand as accepted the Greek All-Sports trophy for the Central State College (Oklahoma) Acacians, from fellow Acacian, an IFC president, Mike Holbrook.

Acacia took the all-sports award for the third year. The top award followed Acacia first place

trophies for football , track, and swimming as well as a second place award for basketball. Mike Holbrook who presented the award is also Venerable Dean of the chapter and paced many of the Acacia teams to victory.

1966 CONCLAVE This year's Conclave is planned to be the biggest and best in Acacia's history. Advance reservations tend to indicate that this Conclave will have the largest attendance of any.

More emphasis will be placed on workshops this year. We are planning to have seven ( 7) workshops; each will be run three times for an hour and a half. They are: Scholarship, Rush, Social, Leadership, Finances, Alumni and Masonic Relations, and Pledge Education. The workshops will be smaller in attendance and thus will allow more roundtable discussion. In addition to these seven workshops, there is one planned for Secretaries. This particular workshop will be run by Acacia's Office Manager, Audra Eikost, known to most of us as ABE. Since the Conclave is being held in New Orleans, a little different time schedule has been set up; more free time will be available so there will be ample opportunity to enjoy New Orleans. In keeping with the activities of this famous city, the Conclave opening and closing times have been altered. Sessions will begin with Lunch, and run until about 9:00 p.m., with a break for Dinner. This will allow everyone a chance to sightsee and still get plenty of rest before time for the sessions.

Notwithstanding all the arrangements made in advance; the careful planning; one of the best host Chapters, L.S.U.; the success of the Conclave depends upon you. Your attendance, enthusiasm, and new ideas are what make our Conclaves productive. We encourage your attendance-not only for the benefit of Acacia, but also for your own. The genuine feeling of belonging to a National Fraternity can easily be obtained when Delegates, Advisors, and Guests from all over the Nation gather together to share in the work and play.

POINT OF VI EW

A typical conversation between a prospective pledge and the fraternity man might go something like this: GREEK: "Man, fraternity is the only way to go."

RUSHEE: "Oh? How come? Why?" GREEK: "Well, there's the social life, see? It's the only way to meet the chicks. Function every week with the big sororities, lots of woodsies, informal dances and stuff- with beer."

RUSHEE: "Sounds great! But how do you guys manage to stay in school what with all those parties?"

GREEK: "Balance, man. You know-all work and no play . . . Us Greeks got it all figured out. But it ain't all play. The big thing about our house is scholarship."

RUSHEE: "My Dad says I've got to make grades.

Besides there's the draft ... " GREEK: "You come to the right house, man. The Greek system stresses scholarship all the time, and at the same time it provides for a well-rounded social life.

Lots of chicks. You can't beat it!"

THE "S OW JOB" This represents the kind of "snow job" fraternity men a re h ar.Jing out by the shovelful every rush week and even during the school year when the prospective pledge should be less gullible. The trouble is, of course, that the Greek believes th at he speaks the truth. And in a ense, a very limited sense, he does speak the truth.

I n ge neral, fra ternities pay lip service to scholarship ideal and to wh a t they call the " well- rounded" social life.

W ha t, however, does the rushee actually discover if he hould decide to pledge a frc-terni ty? Firs t, he finds the social life is active if indeed mostly limited to loud-

band parties in dark basement rooms, for which he must fork -over cash he had not budgeted for fraternity activities-for an affair he had been led to believe would be included in his fraternity dues. And these parties continue all year--occasionally the group puts on costumes or decorates the basement rooms, but the wellrounded social life stays pretty much the same and continues to cost extra money.

Secondly, the rushee discovers that the scholarship emphasis in the fraternity is pretty much a ritual of sincere talk and "mickey mouse" that does little to foster good grades on anyone's part. For example, the fraternities of one college require their pledges to carry grade-report slips to faculty members to indicate an estimate of the pledge's grade and to be signed, with comment if appropriate. Most faculty members are amused by this procedure, recognizing that the fraternities are merely making a strong bid for the good graces of the faculty and administration. I smilingly went along with this "mickey mouse" with the Greeks in my freshman English classes until one red-eyed, exhausted student requested an incomplete on the basis that because of initiation into his fraternity he h ad been unable to complete a term paper. And right there, it seems to me, dwells the hypocrisy. During the traditional " h ell week" before initiation, pledges are forced to sit at study tables, and the fra ternities involved feel this compensates for lack of sleep, mental and physical strain, and the confusion tha t necessarily accompanies fraternity initiation ceremonies. Could you seriously complete a satisfactory term p aper under such circumstances ?

But this is not even a significa nt p a rt of the picture, for " hell week" is only a week. For the res t of the quar-

ter, or semester, that the pledge must remain a novice, he encounters the same kind of academic nonsense. The actives scream at him their concern for his grades and meanwhile force upon him the wildest impositions of nonsense and foolishness-tasks and chores, routines and rituals, games and "hazing." All of these seem insignificant enough individually, but put together they suddenly amount to a block of time the pledge realizes he can't afford if he is to stay in school. Too frequently he calls it quits-he depledges. And under the circumstances, who can blame him?

FIFTY PERCENT DEPLEDGE Recently I was told that at one university the average fraternity could expect a fifty percent depledging. The reasons given were threefold: 1) money, 2) grades, and 3) dissatisfaction with the Greek system. I would merely suggest that these three causes, or reasons, for depledging are in no way unrelated. The pledge discovers that he must pay more to be a fraternity man than he was led to believe; he soon recognizes that the emphasis on scholarship in the fraternity is merely something talked about in the weekly meeting; and, as a result, he becomes dissatisfied with the Greek system and he depledges. I have talked to a great many freshmen and sophomores who have depledged from various fraternities: I've yet to meet one who is sorry.

The truth of the matter is that this is really a deplorable situation, and it need not be tlus way. It seems to me that fraternities are trying very hard to create the wrong kind of "image"-that, in fact, the creation of any kind of image at all is basically harmful to the

Greek system today. Perhaps there is a better way to attract young men into the fellowship that a fraternity offers~perhaps it can result from a re-examination of the basic reason fraternities were founded.

I suppose, in a sense, the fraternity system has always sought to produce a kind of image; but it seems to me this image used not to be its primary concern. Fraternities were born out of "eating clubs," and these apparently were born out of necessity and convenience. Naturally, when two groups emerge side by side, they fall into a kind of competition for status, sophistication, etc.; and it is in this manner that I imagine early fraternities began to seek an image. But such an image is realistic: a group of men can band together under the code of sophistication; they can even call themselves "gentlemen songsters." But in so doing, they are not kidding themselves or anyone else. And that's the problem today-the fraternity is forced to kid itself, the university, the community, and most importantly its prospective members.

A BRIGHTER GENERATION It is my firm conviction that youngsters coming to college join fraternities under the "glamour" of the "snow job" and depledge a few weeks or months later out of dissatisfaction with the image the fraternity strives too hard to perpetuate. If the modern undergraduate is restless and inclined "to raise hell" from time to time, he is also a part of the brightest and in many ways the most sophisticated generation to invade the campuses of our colleges and universities. He appears to be a youth caught in a conformity of striving

for individuality, the very position that causes him to join a social organization and then reject it. At first glance, the fraternity man with his mohair sweater and brightly jeweled pin seems the epitome of sophistication-the very state the young freshman is seeking. But the disillusionment follows quickly when he realizes that often the sweater and pin are badges of a deadly conformity. If the young and impressionable student were not so bright, he might well go along with this conformity to become eventually pinned down by it. I was in 1946. The new generation, however, seems to see the fraternity image for what it is and fairly quickly rejects it. The proof is in the figure of depledges, the problems inherent in rushing today.

It seems reasonable then that the fraternity must change its image--or, perhaps, get rid of its image. I would like to see just one fraternity revert to the founding principle and see what happens. It would be interesting to watch a group of college students join together for fellowship and friendship and nothing more. And if they felt like singing, they would sing. If it was a party they desire, a party would take place. Athletic competition might consist of a game of touch football with another group of gentlemen on the basis of a challenge, perhaps with a keg of beer to be shared as a prize rather than an all-school trophy. On a given evening the ladies might be invited to join the men for dinner-and who ca res what sorority they belong to!

REALISTIC PLEDGE TRAINING Pledaes like a certain amount of "hazing." Not many obj ect to performing a few menial duties for their "mas-

ter" actives. It's when the "mickey mouse" actually gets in the way of the student's academic progress that he begins to rebel-and rebel he should. It's the vicious circle of the whole business that becomes frightening.

Each new group of actives feels it must outdo the last in "hazing" it subordinate pledges. The system begins to mushroom, and the "fallout" is staggering-fifty percent on some campuses.

I look at a typical "hell week" schedule today, and I'm frankly shocked to compare it to what we went through twenty years ago . And I wouldn't object to the increased complexity if I thought anything were gained by it. But, on the contrary, I feel a great deal is being lost instead. The true significance in becoming an active member of a group of gentlemen is swallowed up in adolescent nonsense. The nonsense, unfortunately, is a basic ingredient of the fraternity image-an ingredient, I fear, that is malignant.

Recently I heard a fraternity man proudly announce that his fraternity at last had been put on the "acceptable" list of a so-called prominent sorority. "Acceptable" means that the sorority has condescended to entertain a possible invitation for a joint function from the "acceptable" fraternity. Can you imagine that? It's incredible that any group of men would permit a group of women to emasculate them like that. But, you see, it's part of the image.

I refuse to believe that lovely young ladies-either independent or Greek-are so hard to come by for dating purposes that fraternities and sororities have to establish a social black-ball system. I think the fraternity should rebel and find its f emmes fatale elsewhere.

In addition, I do not believe a social organization has much need to impose ridiculous gimmicks upon its members to encourage scholarship. If the group feels it should strive for higher grades, let it so strive for higher grades, but not merely to be number "one" or "two" on the campus. After all, the best scholarship results from a climate of opinion- it's true in the home and should be true in the fraternity. If the members want high standards of scholarship, they'll have them; if they do not, they won't. And the "gimmicks"-study tables, grade forms, etc.-I fear, merely aid the drop, not the rise.

SIMPLIFY-SIMPLIFY! The solution to all this image problem I think was wisely expressed over a hundred years ago by Henry David Thoreau who exhorted his readers to "Simplify!

Simplify!" Fraternities cannot help lead lives of not-soquiet desperation as long as they continue to pursue images that are not only incompatible with their purposes but most assuredly incompatible with the needs and desires of the up-coming crop of college students.

ACACIA, it seems to me, is in a position to carry out this "simplification" most successfully because it can fall back upon basic concepts that have always proved themselves to be worthwhile without entailing the hindrance of complications.

The scene we looked at at the outset might now be repeated in terms something like these: GREEK: "We have an organization here that might appeal to you."

RUSHEE: "What you got to offer?"

GREEK: "Friendship, primarily. Companionship when you want it. A helping hand if you need it."

RUSHEE: "What about girls?"

GREEK: "How old are you?"

RUSHEE: "Well, what about your scholastic standing?"

GREEK: "Most of the guys here are serious students.

The atmosphere is generally conducive to good study."

RUSHEE: "But how much will it cost me ?"

GREEK: "No more than most entertainment and about as much time as you can afford. That's pretty much up to you."

RUSHEE: "Are you well liked on campus?"

GREEK: "To tell the truth, we seem to like each other pretty well, but frankly I haven' t bothered to ask anyone else."

RUSHEE: " Where are you going now?"

GREEK: "The guys are getting up a volleyball game out back. Care to join in?"

Of course, being simple is never simple-look at all the bother Thoreau went to to prove a point. But it is not difficult to begin heading in the right direction by knocking the old "image" off the pedestal. Let's stop kidding ourselves. Let's stop pretending to be something we are not. Let's above all try to regain that spirit of fellowship that once bound together a group of men who set out with common educational aims. If we can simplify to that degree, I believe we will hear youngsters knocking on the fraternity door to get in-not to get out.
