The House on the Cover The UCLA Chapter is proud to announce that it has recently acquired a new chapter house. Negotiations were completed the last of January of this year and the group moved to their present home in February between the fall and spring semesters.

Located at the southeast corner of the UCLA campus, the new house is about a five minute's walk from the main university buildings and has the strategic position of being on the edge of "sorority row."

The building was formerly a women's residence and is of the Mediterranean type architecture with a stucco exterior finish. The interior combines both the Mediterranean and the Monterey styles to create a genuine fraternity atmosphere. The house is built on the "stair-step" plan with five floor levels throughout including the basement. The living room is large with a beamed ceiling and a huge fireplace at one end. The dining room, a few steps above, overlooks it through several arched balconies. There are twenty-five sleeping rooms with accommodations for two or three men to a room. An apartment in the front of the house will eventually offer facilities for a housemother and an apartment downstairs will accommodate visiting alumni and their wives. Other features of the house include a library, a game room, a chapter office, a flag-stoned patio terrace, and a buzzer system to each room in the house.

The history of the building is rather interesting. It was the first off-campus residence hall built in Westwood. The University's main buildings were completed in 1928 and this hall was ready for occupancy in 1929. It was built by Clyde Bannister who contracted for the major class-room building, Royce Hall, on campus. The building had carried his name until the time the UCLA Chapter moved in. During the war Bannister Hall was used by the Navy for its V:-12 program at which time it housed one hundred students.

Credit for this move is due primarily to Robert Weber, UCLA '49, who expended a tremendous amount of time and energy in laying the groundwork; to the executive officers of the Acacia House Corporation at Los Angeles: R. Glen Woods, Colorado, Thomas Fisher, MissouTi, Don Arvold, Minnesota, Jerrell Babb, Texas, and J. F. Colorado Is Ready!

26th Conclave Opens in Boulder on August 27 If the good citizens of Boulder, Colorado, are a bit perturbed by the everpresent roar emanating from their fair city we can offer reassurances; it's just the buzz of activity which is surrounding the Acacia chapter as it completes arrangements for what general chairman Jim Murphy promises will be "a whopper of a Conclave." The whole chapter is pitching in on the work and planning and promise that there won't be a dull moment from the time of the arrival of the first delegate to the departure of the last. They are even lining up a tour of Estes Park on the day after the last Conclave session, but more of this later.

The following men have been named in charge of the Conclave committees in Boulder: Housing, Dale Watkins; Steak Fry, Bud Holman; Banquet, Chan Moulton; Reception, Chuck Amen; Publicity, Bob Smith; and Utilities, Ken Kleinholtz. With the experience gained from the operation of the regional conference last summer, these men guarantee that every phase of the arrangements will be conducted without a hitch.

Don't get the idea, however, that attendance at the Conclave will be a life of leisure or riotous living. The

Louis Mitchell Retires as Syracuse U. Dean Dean Louis Mitchell, Syracuse, '23 of Syracuse University's College of Applied Science, scheduled to retire next February after 30 years on the Syracuse staff, joined the engineering faculty as an instructor in 1910.

The retiring dean, who also holds the academic rank of professor of civil engineering, is a native of Tippecanoe City, Ohio, and was born February 12, 1885. After his graduation from Earlham College in 1909, he continued his studies at Purdue University where he received another B .S. degree in civil engineering in 1910. He also holds master of science degrees from Massachusetts Institute of T echnology and Harvard, both received in 1915, and was the recipient of the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering at Clarkson College of Technology in 1945.

delegates will be there for business and there is much to be done. National President Ruppenthal, who will preside at the Conclave sessions, indicates that the agenda is a lengthy one and that evening sessions will probably be required if all the work is to be completed on time. A long list of constitutionai amendments will be presented by the committee of George Patterson, Cincinnati, which has been working during the past year.

Banquet at the Crags A limited social program will be in store for all Acacians who attend.

There will be a general reception (informal) on Sunday evening for all members and their wives. Monday night will be highlighted by a steak fry in the mountains and on Tuesday evening the entire assemblage will be transported to Estes Park for the Conclave banquet to be held at the Crags H otel which is surrounded by some of the finest mountain scenery in America.

On Wednesday, the 30th, following the Conclave, the Colorado Chapter has arranged a one-day tour of Rocky Mountain National Park via Trail Ridge Road which crosses the con-

tinental divide. This will be a trip long to be remembered, especially by those of us from the plains and prairies. Anyone who wants to make this trip (at a very nominal cost) should notify the Conclave chairman immediately so that transportation will be assured.

As a final bit of advice, Jack Lunsford advises that, although the thermometer may be around a hundred at Conclave time, it gets cold in the mountains especially at night, so bring a top coat if you want to be comfortable.

Conclave Chairman Is James F. Murray In charge of all of the operations of the National Conclave is James F. Murray, an active member of the Colorado Chapter. Jim is a native of the Canal Zone where he was born in 1927; in 1945 he graduated from the Balboa High School, then went to Colorado for a year before enlisting in the Air Corps for a year and a half. Upon his return to the U. of C. in 1947 he pledged Acacia and has been there ever since. Jim is now a senior but has one more year to go since he plans to get a degree in a course combining chemical engineering and finance (he's a glutton for punishment). Right now, however, his main concern is housing, feeding, and entertaining a couple hundred Acacians who will descend on Boulder for the clam-bake in August.

He also has been engineer and consulting engineer on many projects relating to water supply, sanitation, waterpower, and flood control for both municipalities and industrial concerns in New York, Ohio, and Indiana.

A Syracuse Chapter alumnus has this to say about Dean Mitchell: "Dean Mitchell has been actively interested in the affairs of the chapter ever since his initiation; he and Mrs. Mitchell have been frequent attendants at the social functions sponsored by the chapter through the years.

"For several years he was president of the Alumni Corporation. The chap ter gained from him in this position because his sound judgement in connection with the business affairs assisted us materially in making the best decisions. 34th Chapter at Colorado A & M

Kelly The week end of April 29 and 30th was an inspiring one to old and new Acacians alike, for that marked the installation of the 34th chapter of the Fraternity at Colorado A &¡M, in Fort Collins. Following an evening of preinitiation indoctrination, initiation teams from Colorado, Den~er, and Wyoming performed the ceremonies in the Fort Collins Masonic Temple. Initiation for members of the new chapter occupied all of Saturday, April 29th, and Sunday morning, April 30th.

James Hutchinson, Past Venerable Dean of the Colorado Chapter, acted as toastmaster at the banquet on Sunday, following the morning initiation rites. Immediately after the dinner, telegrams of congratulations from the other chapters and alumni were read.

Colorado's interfraternity song champions then entertained the gathering with three selections. Vice-President Dodson of Colorado A & M and Jack Clevenger, Dean of Men, both gave University welcome to the new chapter.

Lloyd Ruppenthal, National President of Acacia, was the principal speaker and discussed Acacia ideas and Acacia's stand on the right to select its own members. Following President Ruppenthal's address, John Lunsford, Acacia National Editor, made the charter presentation to Dan

Tipton, Venerable Dean of the new chapter. Tipton presented Mother Wells, new chapter Housemother, with a sweetheart pin and Glenn Lavering, Past Venerable Dean and Colonizer, gave an engraved gavel to the chapter.

At 4:00 P.M. on Sunday a tea was held at the Student Union to present to the campus the National Officers of Acacia and the members of the new chapter. National Officers present in the receiving line were Pres. Ruppenthal, Editor Lunsford, Roy C. Clark, Executive Secretary, and Edgar R. Kelly, National Traveling Secretary.

History The new chapter had its beginning in February, 1949. George Croyle, Traveling Secretary, organized a group of A & M Students as an Acacia Colony. Glenn Lavering, UCLA '48, transferred to Aggies in '49 and took over presidency of the group. Much of the success of this colony belongs to Glenn for his leadership and hard work.

In the spring of 1949, a building corporation was organized and a house was leased at 415% Remington St. This was found to be too small and in February of 1950 a new three-story brick residence was purchased at 621 Remington St. Members of the Building Corporation are Chester Bennett, President; Waldo Riffenburg, Dwight

Clark, Homer J. Henney, and Burford Fields.

During the colony period A & M participated in intramurals and held a full social program. Acacia is one of the two fraternities on campus that sponsors an all formal dance.

together in a brotherhood. Learning to live together in a friendly, brotherly manner is a problem, in greater n eed today than ever before. I know of no better way to learn how to live with others than by actually doing so in a fraternity such as this."

Prior to Dr. Brown's speech, Charles Krieger, Past Potentate of Hadi Temple Shrine and toastmaster for the day, introduced a number of distinguished guests including: Dr. Lincoln B. Hale, President of Evansville College; Dr. James E. Morlock, Dean of Men ; Harold Van Winkle, Director of Public Relations; Myron C. Bishop, Coordination Director; Dr. John Kronsbein, Professor of Engineering, all of Evansville College. Also introduced were several representatives of the Shrine including Mr. Elmer Kasbolm, Illustrious Potentate, and national officials of Acacia including Marion Huber, Ray C. Thomas, Roy Clark, Edwin Lemmon, and W. D. Ross. The charter itself was presented to Venerable Dean Marvin Brown by National Counsellor Thomas.

Acacia Installs First National Fraternity at Evansville College

By Martin Hutchings At 11:30 on the morning of May 14, forty-four proud new wearers of the jeweled triangle of Acacia walked from the final section of the initiation ceremonies to the banquet room of the Hotel McCurdy where they were presented with a charter denoting that they were henceforth to be known as the Evansville Chapter of the Acacia Fraternity. The event was of especial note since this is the first national college social fraternity to be admitted to the up-and-coming college.

Installing teams from chapters at Cincinnati, Indiana, Purdue, and Illinois enlightened the new brothers in

the mysteries of Acacia. The large class of initiates r equired the u se of the Evansville chapter house, the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and the Shrine Temple all day on May 13 with the final section being performed the next morning at the Shrine headquarters.

Following the initiation, the new chapter, the initiating groups, Acacia and Evansville College officials, and friends of the chapter met for dinner at the McCurdy. Principal speaker was Pembroke H . Brown, ILlinois, Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois, who told the new Acacians that, "In a fraternity you learn to live

The Evansville Chapter had its beginnings in the fall of 1946 when a group of college students formed a club to promote the ideals, aims, and objectives of Masonry. In the course of time it began to communicate with the national headquarters of Acacia and in the fall of 1949 the group was established as an Acacia colony. This status was maintained for about eight months-until a charter was awarded by the National Council of Acacia.

From the very beginning, the Shrine in Evansville adopted the group as a project and worked with it until its efforts were rewarded by the Acacia Fraternity.

Upon leasing the house in the fall of 1949, the colony found that much work was needed in order to furnish it for sixteen men. The men began to get the real Acacia spirit by this time and, in due time, the colony petitioned for chapter status. This request was granted and on May 14th, 1950, Acacia's 35th chapter came into existence.

Acacia's 46th Birthday Celebrated On May 12, 1904, a charter of incorporation was issued by the State of Michigan to an earnest group of young men who thereby established the Acacia Fraternity. In commemoration of this event a number of chapters and alumni of the Fraternity met this year to hold their annual Founders' Day dinners, plan for the future, and to look forward to 1954 when the Fraternity will celebrate its Golden Anniversary.

Coming as they do near the end of the academic year, these meetings afford the alumni an opportunity to see the chapters at their finest and to welcome the graduating seniors into the alumni ranks of Acacia. Where possible a report is presented showing the growth of the Fraternity during the past year, both locally and nationally; this year there was much to report on the favorable side of the ledger. Many Acacians consider these meetings to be a fine opportunity to renew old acquaintanceships, especially with the brothers from other chapters whom they do not see at homecoming celebrations in the fall.

The following is a roundup of the Founders' Day meetings reported to the TRIAD: Cincinnati The annual Founders' Day Dinner was held May 7 at the Hotel Alms with thirteen chapters represented. Harry Gibbons, Ohio State, presided. George

Patterson was re-elected to be chapter adviser of the Cincinnati Chapter.

John Waddell, Venerable Dean, reported on the activities of the Cincinnati Chapter and urged the alumni to continue to take a greater interest in the affairs of the chapter.

Main speaker was Dr. Ernest Hahne, President of Miami University, who gave a stimulating speech in which he urged a conservative approach to the changing of so-called "discrimination" clauses. He pointed out that we cherish the right to associate with whom we please. That some are asked to join a certain fraternity is no more unfair than that some are chosen to play on a professional baseball team or perform in a symphony orchestra. A college faculty discriminates, too, between an instructor and a professor.

With tongue in cheek, Dr. Hahne suggested that we should give all students in school the same grades regardless of inherent ability! He indicated that the arguments against restrictive clauses in fraternities were equally logical.

Chicagoland Actives and alumni from the Chicago area gathered at the Northwestern University country club on May 21 for an afternoon of golf followed by the annual banquet. About fortyfive were present including a delegation from the Northwestern Chapter.

The chapter presented several songs

after which Ben Hill, Ven erable Dean, outlined the chapter's accomplishments dur ing the year, pointed out that almost half the chapter will graduate this year, and asked that the alumni aid in the rushing program next fall. Ralph Hoffman, retir ing president of the Chicagoland Alumni Association nex t introduced National Executive Secr etary Roy Clar k who gave hi<· annual report on t he grow th of Acacia and told what the headquarters was doing to assist the chapters and the colonies. Following the meeting many alumni stayed on to r ecall their college days "when things r eally were tough."

Rocky Mountain Area The Rocky Mountain Area Alumni Association sponsored its Founders' Day banquet on May 12 at the Albany Hotel in Denver. This was the first such occasion for the alumni under the sponsorship of this association.

The banquet was well-attended by active members and alumni from the chapters in D enver, Ft. Collins, Boulder, and Laramie. J. Arthur Thompson served as master of ceremonies and the main speaker was Haslett P .

Burke, Denver, and a justice of the Supreme Court of Colorado, who spoke on the topic "Truth and Light."

A trio from the Denver Chapter and the chorus of the Colorado Chapter provided suitable music.

This year's banquet, held May 13, celebrated the fortieth anniversar y of the Washington Chapter of Acacia.

Sixty alumni joined the active chapter in devouring a luscious ham dinner in the new chapter room which had been recently enlarged and remodeled.

The alumni started to arrive as early as the afternoon of the day before the banquet. · Bernie Anderson served as toastmaster and introduced the class speakers who were Ira Collins, 1910; Fred Scheyer, 1920; Hans Schinnell, 1930; Earl Lagergren, 1940; and Gene Guthrie, 195(}. Gene Guthrie was awar ded the honor plaque signifying that he had done the most for the chapter during his period of membership, while the coveted· "Bullus Texanus" was presented to Jack Cowger by Bill Burdue, last year's winner.

George Washington The annual Founders' Day supperdance was held on May 12 at the lovely Alexandrian Room in Alexandria, Virginia. Due mainly to Roy Sweney, a large number of alumni turned out to enjoy the buffet and the danceable music. Included in the alumni contingent were Gordon Grimwood, George Spangler, Paul Hammock, Lee Hammer, and T . W. Kellogg. This was one of the finest social .events of the year and special commendation should be given to Bob Hildebrand for his efforts in arranging the party.

Kansas Chapter The annual F ounders' Dav celebration was observed on May 7; this was the second such nhservance since the reactivation of the K ansil" Ch auter.

Dinner was served to twenty-one guests in the chauter dining room, after which each alumnus was intrnduced. Venerable De<Jn Marvin S. Liggett gave a brief talk in which he summarized the events of the nast year. the status of the chapter. and the scholarship system. The Acacia quartet presented several numbers after which movies of the chapter were shown by Max Fessler and Edward Taylor. Following the program the Acacia Educational Corporation held its annual meeting.

During the annual meeting held later in the day the following officers were elected for the coming year: President, Hardy Crowell, ' 25; Vice President, John Reed, '32; Secretary, Herbert Wagner; and Treasurer, Russ Price.

Miami Chapter ThP Mi ami Chapter held its first Founders' Day banquet on Sunday, Mav 21. Dr. Vallance, dean of the graduate School, served as toastmaster and Dr. William Smith of the history department gave an account of the history of the Miami Chapter. President Hahne spoke of the fine ideals of the Fraternity and commended the chapter for its leading position academically. Professor Henry Stefanik, a recent initiate, was also at the speakers' table.

Guests included Marion Huber, National Treasurer of Acacia. who spoke briefly on the workings of th~ National Council; George Patterson. Cincinnati Chapter adviser, and a number of Cincinnati alumni. About seventy-five were in attend::~n ce-a fine showing for such a new chapter.

Oregon State Chapter

"The best celebration since re-activation" was the concensus on the Founders' Day meeting and dinner held on April 30, when a large delegation of alumni turned out. Anumber came long distances, including Oscar Arnsberg, who traveled over 600 miles.

Michigan Chapter The Michigan Chapter celebrated F ounders' Day on May 13 with the assistance of some fifty alumni. Preceding a huge steak dinner the more hardy alumni engaged the chapter in a softball game while the less ambitious remained in the house to r elive the early days of the Michigan Chapter and to witness movies of the Michigan-Illinois football game.

special feature of the evening for Mother Brown was the corsage presented to her. It was a lei of pink carnations flown from Hawaii via Pan American air express. Don Chang, who was originally from Hawaii, made arrangements for the lei that Mother Brown wore with her black lace dinner dress.

Holding the distinction of being the first housemother of any fraternity on the Nebraska campus, Mother Brown said that although she had been to many parties, she had never been presented with a lei.

Her home town is Lincoln, and her son, who graduated from Nebraska in 1914, makes his home in California.

He was an Acacian while at Nebraska.

In recalling her years of chaperoning Mother Brown was quick to mention the football games she attended.

"Ed Weir was one of my boys, and I almost always had a boy on the team," she said.

Mother Brown has naturally seen many changes in Acacia and the school in general. She watched over her boys in three different houses through the years, and came back to them again after the reactivating of the fraternity following the war years.

With some of the other housemothers Mother Brown helped organize the Chaperons' Club. She said that it was kind of out of her life now, however, since many of her old friends are no longer here.

New Officers Named by S. California Alumni

At the regular monthly meeting, held at the U .S.C. Chapter House May 23rd. new officers were elected and installed. Newly elected uresident is W. E. ''13 Colonies" Hold Keys to Expansion Across the length and breadth of America there are future chapters of Acacia coming to life. These "colonies" are the backbone of the immediate expansion plans of the Fraternity and all are working diligently to become established as full-fledged chapters.

To Acacians who have joined wellestablished chapters it is sometimes difficult to realize the work that is involved in starting from nothing to bring a new chapter into the fold.

The local alumni must be organized to back the colony, the approval of the college administration must be obtained, adequate housing must be provided, and, most of all, a worthy group of enthusiastic students must be found to pioneer the chapter. None of these problems is easily solved and several years are sometimes required to fulfill these prerequisites to establishment of a prosperous chapter.

Fortunately, the Fraternity is able to offer real assistance in the accomplishment of these goals. The three traveling secretaries devote a considerable part of their time to work with the colonies. George C royle, Ed Kelly, and Ed Lemmon pass on to the colonies the experience of work with chapters of Acacia and are able to provide many of the answers to the tough problems faced by the neophyte groups. But everywhere it is the Acacia alumni who are helping; to carry the load. Often these men have been away from their chapters for twenty years or more but they do not hesitate to give of their time and experience and resources in the advancement of Acacia. If you, as an Acacia brother, want to help in this work, get in touch with the National Headquarters or contact the colonies directly.

But now for a run-down of the colonies themselves. Because some of these groups are developing very rapidly, these reports are in some cases out of date-but they at least provide a review of the current activity. Included are only those groups which have been recognized and approved by the college administrations.

WISCONSIN-This group is ready to be installed. Fifty men have been pledged during the past two years. The main problem has been housing and this was solved at the end of the school year by the purchase of a house on Langdon Street, only a block from the lake. Chapter adviser is Sherman Metcalf who has done an outstanding job. Others who have taken a lead in the raising of funds and in locating

pledges have been K irk Bates, H enry C. Fuller, Prof. Henry Bakken, and Bill Piper. With over 400 alumni this chapter should rapidly become one of the strongest in Acacia , as it was prior to closing at the beginning of the war.

VERMONT-On March 11 the first group of 37 men was pledged. They have actively entered into the campus affairs as a fraternity group. A house had not been located as yet but it is hoped that a home will be found during the summer. Bill Wood is the organizer of the colony and h as been assisted by Pete Kelley, a transfer from R.P.I., and AI Spokes, an alumnus of the Syracuse Chapter who resides in Burlington. This group hopes to petition for a charter in the fall.

MISSOURI-A colonv has been established to reactivate the old Missour i Chapter which was for many years a stalwart Acacia groun. Under the direction of Gene Wetzel, a transfer from the Kansas Chapter, 32 men have been pledged and are operating actively as a local fraternity. They have had a well-planned social program and have participated in intramurals. Housing is now being sought.

ARIZONA-At the last report were enlisted into this colony, housing has been arranged, and the university's one-year probationary requirement will be completed next Novemb er.

Paul Carter, a Northwestern alumnus, is acting as chapter adviser and the group is being assisted by George Muller, an undergr aduate from the Indi ana Chapter. Correspondence should be addressed to E. H. Torgerson, 420-C East Kelso Street, Tucson, Arizona.

ARKANSAS-Arkansas colony was founded in January, 1949, by two transfers from Kansas State College, Kenneth Walden and John Ellison.

About 26 men are included in the group and temporary housing is in a six-room apartment which provides sleeping quarters for twelve. They have gained full recognition from the university and from the other fraternity groups. Eight alumni in Fayetteville, including D. P. Richardson , E. B. Meriwether, and Fred Kerr, are working with the chapter. The immediate need is to locate more adequate housing so that the colony may expand to chapter size.

TENNESSEFr-This group has risen from a practically dormant stage in January to a membership of about 30 men. They have rented a one-room garage apartment near the campus; this is being used for regular meetings

and for a study room and an informal meeting place during the day.

LOUISIANA STATEr-In February of this year a colony was formed from the Square and Compass club and has a membership of 35 men. Not content with simply renting a house they are raising money to construct a new building during the next year. Under the guidance of two faculty members, Col. S. E. Lawrence Purdue, and Major Lindemann of the ROTC, the colony is making real progress and may well become one of the strongest chapters within a few years.

WASIDNGTON (St. Louis)-An other group which has been organized since the first of the year and which now has about fifteen members. Dale Babcock from Lincoln, Nebraska, is the principal organizer. Plans have been made for an active rushing program this fall and the group hopes to obtain a suite in one of the university's dormitories so that they may live together.

MONTANA-This colony was organized quite recently so has only eight members although university recognition has already been obtained.

A rushing program has been planned for the summer and the help of Masonic organizations and publications has been enlisted. Alumni support is good , with every local alumnus turning out for a recent meeting. Dr. Roy Ely is acting as chapter adviser and John Mathews is president of the group.

Dr. W. J . Marshall, one of the Found ers of Acacia, resides in Missoula and is lending his support and inspiration.

CALIFORNIA (Davis) - Approval of the administration was given in May and colonizing work has b een started und er the direction of Bob Fullerton of the UCLA Chapter. Robert D eVoe, Washin gton State, who is on the Davis High School faculty, is acting as chapter adviser.

SAN JOSE STATEr-Administrative approval has been given and final approval of the interfraternity council is now awaited. A group of 19 men , headed b y William Allen, have been brought together. Alumni support is most encouraging; there are over sixty alumni in the city of San Jose and the upper peninsula area.

the World Over Lemmon Covers the Ground: It's Plane How He Does It! A perennial problem of a traveling secretary for Acacia has been how to be in two places at the same time, especially when they are a thousand miles apart. Genial Ed Lemmon has the closest answer we've seen yet: an airplane! In his tour of duty over the Great Mid-West, Ed has found his Cessna 140, two-place plane to be a real help in meeting the split-second schedules set up by the Executive Secretary Roy Clark. Since the plains area is practically never beset by the caprices of weather which beset the citizens of East and West, he has little to worry him and is usually able to get to that meeting in Baton Rouge after a rough evening in Minneapolis or Madison.

The several fraternities have made some unusual claims to fame but we'll bet no one else can boast of a flying secretary. And there's no outpost of civilization that will be too remote for the pair shown below.

LEMMON & PLANE

On May lOth the Michigan Chapter assembled for a dinner in honor of Dean Russell Bunting of the University's School of Dentistry. After thirteen years of service to the university and its students, Dr. Bunting is retiring in June as the head of the dental school.

After dinner Dean Bunting briefly reviewed his days as a member of Acacia. As Dr. Bunting was the very first pledge of Acacia way back in 1905, he was well able to give an informative account of the Mother Chapter's early life. His remarks concerning the first initiation were of special interest and amusement to all the brethren. Dean Bunting also commended the present active members for their continued support of the ideals and principles o£ the Fraternity set nearly fifty years ago.

Gathering with the actives and pledges of the Mother Chapter were several alumni including: Founder Charles A. Sink; Colorado alums Ivan C. Crawford, Dean of the College o£ Engineering; Professor Robert Rodkey; University of Michigan Alumni Secretary T. Halley Tapping; Marland B. Small; Chapter Advisers Fred Seyfried and Weimer Christman; and Herbert P . Wagner.

The evening was climaxed by group singing and many alumni recollections of the "old days" at Michigan. L. S.

Death Comes to R. J. Woelk Word has been received of the passing of Rudolph J. Woelk, Kansas '19, who died at a Kansas City hotel on May 19. Brother W oelk, who was a prominent businessman of Russell, Kansas, became ill with a heart attack and passed away very suddenly.

"Rudie" Woelk was a member of the outstanding chapter at Kansas immediately after the first world war in which · he served. After attending the University of Kansas he assumed management of the W oelk Implement Store in Russell and held this position until his death. His interest in civic, religious, Masonic, and political work was well known. He was at one time chairman of the Russell county Republican Central Committee.

Clark to Head N. U. Fraternity Alumni At the annual banquet of the Northwestern University Fraternity Alumni Board, Roy Clark was named president for the next year. Brother Clark is, of course, our own National Executive Secretary.

California The California Chapter looks back on the past year as a milestone in its history.

Under the leadership of Bob Frye and Boyd Long, substantial improvements were made both internally and externally in organization, social status, and in house facilities and appearance.

The social calendar provided plenty of relaxation from studies with house dances, costume parties, exchanges, and formals. Spring parties included the Egyptian dance entitled "A Night on the Nile," the pledge formal, a barbecue and dance, and an exchange.

The "Night on the Nile" was a great success, with the theme providing many possibilities. The major part of the house was completely rebuilt with stone blocks in the Egyptian manner using cardboard and paint. Entrance was made through a large pyramid in front of the house.

From there subterranean passages led to a mummy room complete with mummy fully anointed, and then into the upper chambers. Here two rows of columns, flanked by walls adomed with paintings of Egyptian life and authentic inscriptions, led to the room with dancing girls (and boys). On the other end of the columned hall sat the Queen's throne where Queen Nancy Boyer reigned.

The pledge formal, held at the old Hearst ranch, afforded a relaxing day of swimming, golfing, horse back riding and dancing, all thoroughly enjoyed by both pledge and active.

The Elks Club in Berkeley was the scene of the annual birthday banquet. Alumni present ranged from recent graduates back to the first president of the chapter, William Hopkins.

The colony at C. 0. P . (College of the Pacific) visited us one evening for dinner.

The chapter officers discussed fraternity organization and problems, also the trials and tribulations of a pledge were given by pledge Walt Tingley.

Our new program of alumni get-together meetings got under way with Charlie Adams, Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Califomia, as speaker of the evening. K. C. Leebrick, acting president of the University of Hawaii, spoke at another meeting on recognizing the merits and meeting the obligations of our American form of Government.

Sports participated in during the year were rugby, football, crew, and baseball.

Acacia's team in the intramural track meet placed third out of fifty-two contenders.

Johnny Nysteun sparked the team by winning the broad jump and anchoring the relay team which lost by 1-30 of a second (so the time-keeper said) .

Richard Hoffelt won the honor of being named Mr. Formal of the University of Califomia. Loot included a formal suit of clothes for Dick and beer mugs for the house.

David A. Fischer was elected to Phi Beta

Kappa. We hear that modest Dave is ordering cuff links to match. Dave is also a member of Tau Beta Pi, engineering honorary society; Alpha Zeta, national agricultural honorary, claimed two members from the chapter, Malcolm McCormack, and Lloyd Andres. Richard Olson was the recipient of the spring award of the Bancroft A. Nelson Trophy. Dick has contributed much to ·the Fraternity and will do more next fall as Senior Dean.

Cincinnati This past year has been an active one for the Cincinnati Chapter in every way except getting new men. Of those wearing the little, round, black-and-gold pin in September, only six, although good men and true, were initiated in February.

The Spring rushing added two more pledges to the roster: Chester Thompson, a freshman in mechanical engineering, from Ii:onton; and Jerry Birge, liberal arts freshman, majoring in geology, from Indiana. We have big plans for fall rushing and hope that this has been the calm before the storm.

The major item in chapter house improvements is the new dining room, nOVJ' nearing completion under the capable supervision of Rolly Wagner. The present dining room having proved too small, the architects of the chapter drew up plans for removing the walls separating the solarium from an alcove of the kitchen and merging the two into one big room.

Right before Greek Week the demolition squads went to work. During the initiation week, each pledge slaved a twohour shift a day, and many of the actives pitched in. In no time at all, the walls were removed and the ceiling miraculously remained where it should be. Rewiring, repiping, and the moving of a sink and stove were taken in stride.

To keep the remodeling pace at a maximum the chapter passed the measure that

each member should work at least two hours a week or pay a fine of two dollars.

A corrugated material called Careystone, which adorns the walls; an acoustitile ceiling with inset, spotlight-type lamps, and proposed, irregularly curved tables satisfy the modern tendencies of our applied arts members.

Special credit is also due to Tom Morse, who is making the place more home-like with potted plants and a flower garden, and to Bill Rinehart, who has done a swell job of fixing up the game room in the annex.

Two of the big campus events we participated in during the past year were Homecoming Day and the Sigma Sigma Camival.

For Homecoming Day, which took place last October with the game between U. C. and Mississippi State, each organization built a float. Our theme, entitled "Yours Is The Balance," was a huge balance-on one side the grim reaper for those who do not utilize their abilities to the best, and on the other side a youth in cap and gown, symbolizing truth-seeking.

Each organization constructed some sort of booth for the Sigma Sigma Carnival, May 6, whose purpose this year was to raise money for a tarpaulin to cover the football field. Our contribution was "Cupid's Corner," where those willing to splurge ten cents on three arrows shot at balloons. Thanks are in order for Jerry Amspaugh, who created the idea and worked long ·and hard to see it through to completion.

Our social calendar was profusely sprinkled with open houses, exchange dinners with sororities, parties and formals.

The Pledge Formal on December 10 was the big blowout of the year. The pledges traditionally worked up a skit, and an after-dance snack somewhere topped the evening off right.

The Spring Formal, held at a lodge in Mt. Airy Forest, April 29, also ranked high, as once again the tuxedoes and evening-gowns came out of hiding.

The Halloween Party found everyone in some sort of costume, from Arabs to tramps, and the cider flowed like wine.

The latest shindig was a bam dance, May 12. Most of us were novices when we arrived, but with the help of the caller, we were soon hopping through the polka, schottische, and Virginia reel like accomplished square-dancers. Our thanks go to the Mothers' Club, who sponsored the affair to raise funds for new drapes in the dining room.

At the Pan-Hellenic Dinner last March we were very much surprised but very pleased to be awarded a beautiful trophy by t he Inter-Fraternity Pledge Council for the highest scholarship of the pledge classes on campus.

We have agreed to take a HELP student from Europe for one year . He will room and board at th e house. HELP's purpose is not only to provide a year's college education for him, but also to influence him in the American way of life.

Colorado Colorado chapter's spring term was marked by such varied undertakings as Colorado U. Days, a Mother's Day Tea, and the chapter's annual Spring Formal.

When the hectic week end of Colorado U. Days had passed, the chapter found itself the proud possessor of two first place trophies. The sing fest group under the direction of Robert Bergheim captured first place in the Song fest competition with the song, "Whirlwind." The second trophy was won by the "Club Casino" entry of the chapter in the annual carnival booth competition. This booth was complete with a giant roulette ferris wheel with pretty Kappa Delta girls perched on it. The chapter received help on the carnival entry idea from the Illinois Chapter via Traveling Secretary Ed Kelly.

Although the sports scene is not cluttered by any first place cups as yet, the bowling team headed by Senior Dean Dick Irwin is well on its way towards securing one. The team was first in its league and needs but one more victory to emerge as school champions. The softball team, coached by Bud Holman, ended the season in fourth pla ce in its league.

Color ado Chapter is on the up swing. A strong point in this argument would be the winter quarter scholarship record.

The chapter led all twenty-three fratern ities with a sizzling 1.70 average . Helping the scholarship cause migh tily were Carl Duncan, Thomas S. Hutchinson and James A . Read, all of whom achieved perfect 3.0 records.

On April eighteenth, Mrs. Mildred E .

Glynn arrived from Lincoln, Nebraska, to become Colorado Chapter's housemother, succeeding Mrs. C. E. Bocock who had held the position for eight years. Mother Glynn, a 1922 graduate of the University of Colorado and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, had previous acquaintance with Acacia through her brother-in-law, Dr. Edward E. Taylor of Denver, an alumnus of the Colorado Chapter. A Mother's Day Tea was held May 14 honoring Mother Glynn. The guests at the tea, numbering approximately 150, included representatives from campus Greek organizations, faculty, housemothers, alumni, and parents and friends of the chapter.

The social highlight of the term was the annual Spring Formal. The theme, "Candle Glow," was carried through by over 100 candles adorning the dance floor and outside decoration with a burgundy colored water pond complete with floating lighted candles and gardenias. The unique decorations were completed under the leadership of Kenyon Hook.

The Colorado men have hearts as evidenced by the engagements announced and recent pinnings. Kenyon Hook presented a ring to Roma Firnhaber, while recent pinnings included Bob Smith to Lucia Jane McCabe, Alpha Chi Omega, Ken Skinner to Lois Watts, Jim Read to Eleanor Rodgers, Chi Omega, and Jim Statton to Betty Jean Goddard of Colorado Women's College.

New pledges of Colorado are James R. Collins, Minturn ; Warren R. Tolman, Indianola, Nebraska; Eugene Wicks, Minot, North Dakota ; Paul L . Edscorn, East St. Louis, Illinois ; and Kenneth R. Wilson of Cortez.

Improvements to the house have been largely furnishings. A new sofa and two occasional chairs have been purchased for the housemother's suite. A new stove and fan ventilation system have been installed in the kitchen. A four foot by six foot mirror placed over the mantle in the living room was presented to the house by the twenty graduating seniors leaving the chapter.

One of the seniors leaving the chapter this term, Thomas S. Hutchinson, was se-

lected as this year's Outstanding Senior Engineer. The other seniors are Loren Anderson, Robert Bergheim, Jack Bowen, Edward Burrus, Walter Clark, Gerald Cunningham, William Eaton, Leroy Graham, Dick Hake, Kenyon Hook, James D. Hutchinson, DeanS. Denver As our second year of reactivation nears a close, we look back and summarize our progress. During the summer and early fall of this school year, our house was purchased and moved into. Since then there have been many events worthy of merit, such as the fall and spring formals, the winter snow party, and the journey of eleven members to Ft. Collins over the week ~nd of April 28 to participate in the installation of the Colorado A. & M. Chapter. This was the first installation ceremony that the chapter had officiated in, and ¡ a wonderful week end was enjoyed by all.

Rushing procedure is in the process of being overhauled throughly, and a more invigorated and streamlined program is proposed for fall quarter. The pledges of this quarter are: Jack Allison, Allen Auten, Dale Fester, Norman Porter, and Ted Proske, all of whom are from Denver.

From other parts come: Bill Anderson, Dighton, Kas.; Harold Atkinson, Leoti, Kas.; John Aylor, Jr., Brighton; John Beatty, Monte Vista ; Don Lundberg, Ft. Morgan ; Doug Miller, Crawford, Neb.; Richard Soennichsen, Plattsmouth, Neb.; Dick Thompson, Fond duLac, Wise. ; and Albert Wazuka, New Haven, Conn.

On April 22, four more men became adorned with the jeweled pin. Their names are: Richard Handt, Rochester, N. Y. ; John Leavel, Kansas City, Mo.;

The Triad, Summer, 1950 John Menge, Benkleman, Neb.; and Joseph Reed, Douglas, Wyo. We, of the Denver chapter cannot express enough gratitude for the work that our Mothers' Club has been doing. They have made all the drapes, contributed most of the china and all the silverware for the house. They have also staged two buffet suppers at the house this quarter, where all the chapter and their dates were treated to a most bountiful feeding.

The chapter has participated in almost all . of the events on campus this quarter.

During the May Day celebrations we were in a water grudge fight with Phi Kappa, and constructed a gaily decorated booth for the carnival. Four men, the largest number of men from any fraternity on campus, attended the Leadership conference held in Estes Park, and were members of panel discussions. Acacia was represented at the Vaughn Monroe Interfraternity Council formal by almost a unanimity, by this chapter.

The social calendar for this quarter has been filled with many events of varied kinds. The spring formal at the Argonaut Hotel May 26, held in honor of our departing faculty sponsor, Mr. Carl Parker, (Michigan) was frequented by almost all of this chapter, several members from other chapters and other Greek organizations.

The chapter was also honored by the "47" club of Denver, group of prominent Denver Masons, who were hosts to members Tom Watton, Gordon Eggebrecht, and the faculty advisor, Mr. Parker, at their annual "Acacia Day" luncheon held in the Assembly Room of The Daniels' and Fisher's department store May 11. A speech was given by Mr. Arthur Bartholic ('25) about Acacia, and a colored movie was also presented. To mention a few other social events, there was the annual picnic with the Phi Kappa fratemity with an ensuing softball game (we won!); an exchange dinner with the Delta Gammas; a snow picnic in the Black Forest; a night Easter egg hunt; and a Senior farewell dance the last night of school is on the agenda.

Among the chapter visitors of the quarter are the national officials, Mr. Ruppenthal, Mr. Clark, and Mr. Kelly. Mr. Waldo Riffenburg ('24) has visited the house several times this quarter, and also attended the spring formal. Several other alumni have gathered at the house on occasions to discuss plans for enlarging the house.

The chapter has acquired a large number of offices and honors in the past year. .S ome of the more important ones include Ray Norris's election as vice president of the Interfrat' Council, and Warren Tomlinson's initiation into Omicron Delta Kappa, national honorary.

Warren has been editor of the yearbook for the past two years, and also has been selected as editor of the Clarion, the school paper, for the coming school year. He has also been serving as a member of the Inter-School Council.

In the "section eight" department, Bill McCarty and pretty Gamma Phi Beta, Janice Johnson, have announced their engagement. Due to many cigars, the chapter has literally "tumed green" four times this quarter. Pinnings were: Oren Towsley

97 to Frankie McCarty; Paul Jensen to Rose Coupe; Ralph Harlow to Jackie Sheppard; and Joe Reed to Bonnie Holberg.

A tribute of the highest nature is due to Paul Jensen, Don Powell, Bill Pennington, and Howard Manary, past officers who have given hours of their time to build Acacia during the past two years, also who will all graduate from the University of Denver this year. These four Acacians were all initiated at the reactivation 'of the Denver chapter and their absence will be a great loss to the fraternity. Four other graduating seniors, Oren Towsley, Gordon . Eggebrecht, John Menge, and Gavin Mallett, will also be missed for their hard work and friendly spirit.

Franklin After an intense season of spring rushing, the Franklin Chapter has pledged six fine men. They are John Crawford, who is active in the Band and in the Christian Association; Bill Ennis, who is stroke of the freshman crew; Fred Foutz, who is also active in the Band and the Christian Association; Bill Griffin; John Marion, and George Peterson. With these men who will be initiated in September the Franklin Chapter looks forward to a successful rushing season in the fall.

Our most recent initiates are Bill Croman and Jack Bechtol, both active Band members.

Franklin Chapter regrets to loose six of its number through spring graduation. Ed Armstrong plans to attend dental school at NYU, while Ray Bally will apply his "industrial management" in his dad's dry cleaning plant. Skip Eichner plans to attend medical school at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, and Clyde Zukeswert will work for his dad in the field of accounting. Dick Runkle expects to work for the Lutheran Church in Philadelphia, while brother Jim Witte says that he is going to "go west and become an architect."

Franklin Chapter has had a most interesting and enjoyable season of social affairs this spring. Early in April the fellows climbed aboard a hay truck and journeyed with their dates to Don Wintz's home in the northern part of Philadelphia.

Don entertained at his home and a good time was had by all. On two different occasions the fellows invited the Zeta Tau Alpha and Chi Omega sorority houses to our house for dessert-dances. These occasions were a great help to our rushing program. On the week end of the Senior Ivy Ball the brothers had a picnic at nearby Smedley Park. All enjoyed baseball, canoeing, exploring and finally singing by the camp fire. The boys then returned to the house for an old clothes party. The annual Alumni Dinner was held at the Drake Hotel in Philadelphia on May 26.

The speaker was Executive Secretary, Roy Clark, and the honored guests were brothers George Nitsche, Joseph Wilson, other alumni and their wives.

On May 9th the men of Franklin Chapter participated in the Interfraternity Song Competition. After many long hours of rehearsal t~nder the direction of Henry Smith, the fellows managed to place third

out of the 12 houses that entered. The brothers sang "When Day Is Done" and "My Acacia Girl." All felt that entering the contest helped increase fraternit y spirit, and the boys have set their sights at nothing less than capturing the trophy in next year's contest.

Brother Curt Reitz was recently elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Don Wintz has entered campus politics by being elected to the Undergraduate Council. Ray Bally and Bill Wason have distinguished themselves by being elected to the Penn Players Club and the Varsity Club of the Penn Crew respectively. Henry Smith was r ecently appointed Student Director of the University Band. Franklin Chapter can be justly proud of the accomplishments of these men.

With the prospect of initiating our pr esent pledges in the fall and gaining more fine men through next year's early rushing period, FranJ!:lin Chapter feels that it will be able to accomplish bigger and better things in the year to come. George Washington To you Southern California, without hesitation, or too much deliberation, we at at G. W. have decided we are tops for this round of the TRIAD. Our new pledges are : Jack Cherry, Norfolk, Virginia; Jack Rogers, Pottsville, Pennsylvania;WaltandJim Wingo, Washington, D. C.; Carl Bengtson, Staten Island, New York. All of these aspirants are making fine progress in the University and in the pledge class. John Smith, a pledge in 1948 has retw¡ned, after a year's absence from the University and is again the great party man of old.

Our chapter, under the direction of Pete Jones, a great Texas politician, recently led a political party to victory in the Student Council elections. John Lytle, our candidate for Freshman Director, ran a close second after a heated campaign, but nevertheless five of our eight men secured offices, and Acacia has established itself as The Political Leader on G. W. campus.

Socially, this year has been most successful. Picnics, bowling parties, and tea dances with such fine sororities as Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Kappa, and Delta Gamma have been very enjoyable, producing lasting friendships. Saturday night parties, our annual "Go-To-Hell" masquerade, and two formals left many never-to-be-forgotten moments. Our social committee is to be highly commended for a well-planned year of chapter activities.

Don Iverson has succumbed to the fascination and enchantment that Sigma Kappa seems to hold over us, (with a great big hammer) and has surrendered his newly acquired jeweled emblem to Mary Ann Yeager. But this is our only casualty this semester, so we are holding our own, with fewer cigars, and more pins at home.

Ed Hayes and "Cookie" Foulds have won the university doubles bowling championship. "Cookie" hails from Alpha Delta Pi. Ed has also been a spark plug on our

98 basketball team and a good second baseman in baseball. During the year we competed in interfraternity basketball, baseball, bowling, volley ball, ping pong, and track. Jim Wingo contributed an intramural boxing championship to the chapter.

Bob Hildebrand has recently been elected to the highly competitive office of CoCaptain of the University Cheer Leaders.

Don Morgan is also a member of the first cheer squad. Since Lee Bramlette is graduating this June, Don has been elected to be our I. F . C. delegate.

During the writing of this article, we were resting peacefully, after a hectic examination period, at Ocean City, Maryland, the sorority and fraternity summer hang-out. Hope to see you all at the Conclave.

Indiana It looks like things are really going to start off a bang next year, as we now have thirty-two pledges lined up for next fall, one of which will present somewhat of a bunk problem. Just a few weeks ago, amid the glow of colored lights and the smell of freshly popped corn, we held our second annual Spring Carnival. The front lawn resem-

bled a miniature midway with all the booths one would find at a carnivalshooting gallery, mouse game, fortune-telling spinning wheel, and dice game. While all ~f this was going on, a five piece combo played on the front porch. On the inside a hypnotist, Phi'!. Monteith, was busy putting some of the brothers and rushees into a trance-proved to be quite amusing too!

Near the end of the festivities, our first Acacia Carnival Queen, Joyce Jones, was crowned and presented with a dozen American Beauty roses and a huge panda bear.

One of the acts that I almost forgot to mention was the one put on by two of the brothers, Carl York and Bob Vass. They gave a demonstration on weight lifting, with Carl going to the point of lifting the stiffened body of Frank Chenoweth aloft as if he were a bar weight.

Along the intramural lines things have been working out all right. As far as we can figure (the results aren't out yet), we should finish in the upper ten of ninetytwo participating housing units. At a dinner given in honor of the men who participated in intramural sports, William Schlimmer was presented the Guthrie Trophy. The award was originated by Dick and Wayne Guthrie and is given to the outstanding intramural athlete at the climax of intramural activities.

As the semester nears the end, the campus activities are still rolling in. Just recently Jim Mahoney was chosen as one of the Supreme Court Justices, and Gerry Eckhart was elected to Blue Key, of which he is now secretary. Two other brothers have pulled down presidencies of honoraries--Joe Thomas, Delta Sigma Pi, business honorary; and John Held, Arnold Air Cadets, air honorary for advanced R. 0. T. C. students. Also along the line of activities, three of our freshmen have made Blue Key Recognition-Mike Mims, Bob Distelhorst, and Bob Deadman.

A rash of pinnings broke out early in May, so maybe that old adage-"In the spring a young man's fancy lightly tums to thoughts of love."-wasn't far from wrong. Four of the pins were put out in one house, Delta Delta Delta--Jim Ferguson and Ellen Ball, Frank Chenoweth and Jo Ihlstrom, Jack McClamrock and Donna Wilson, and Gerry Eckhart and Joyce Jones. Other pins put out were: Roger Nolan and Myra Oppenheim, Zeta Tau Alpha; Tom Lemster and Pat Coppess, Gary; Dave Day and Valjean Smith, Bloomington; Jim Huffer and Betty King, Indianapolis; Bob Babbs and Rosann Goldman, Spencer; Deane Olney and Gladys Drake, East Chicago.

On the thirteenth and fourteenth of May we held our annual Mother's Week End, at which time we turned the house over to the mothers. At midnight the chapter serenaded their mothers, after which they invited us in for hot chocolate and homemade cookies.

That same week end all of the men who didn't have their mothers here went to Evansville to help install the new chapter.

I was one of the fortunate ones who was able to go, and I might say that they have a mighty fine bunch of men there.

That about winds up the activities of the Indiana Chapter for this year. We again wish to remind all alumni and members of other chapters that the "welcome" mat is always out at 702 East Third, so drop in any time that you are on campus.

Iowa State Since the last issue of the TRIAD Iowa State Acacians have been a busy bunch of fellows. After an all night session with chicken wire and crepe paper and a lot of hard work our float was one of the eighty which made the Veishea parade one of the best in years. The judges thought that our work was not in vain as they gave us honorable mention.

The following day was our Founders' Day dinner and several of the alumni were able to be with us to share in the good food and fellowship. Among those present were Albert A. Bird '17 and Walter N. Merriman '24.

Along with the ever present picnics the big social affair for the spring quarter was the annual spring formal. This year the theme was "Moonlight Sonata" with the country club decorated as a formal garden with white lattice, lilacs, and apple blossoms. Each girl received a rose corsage and a copper mug with the crest on it as she came in the door. Much credit for a very successful dance goes to social chairman Jim Hogfeldt and decorations chairman Vern Hohenboken.

Not a little surprise was occasioned in the house when the winter quarter grade point averages were released by the college and Acacia found itself in second place among fraternities. This is getting close to where Acacia belongs and we all resolved to really try and maybe top that list next time.

While the boys were hitting those books they also found time to do plenty of other things. In Honoraries, Carl Anderson was initiated into Alpha Zeta, Don Gelhorn made Pi Tau Sigma and Jake Bird was initiated into Tau Beta Pi. Two new men are wearing pledge pins Dick Weber and Stan Romans, and seve~ men exchanged the pledge pin for the jeweled triangle, William Huffman, William Colville, Donald Gelhorn, Verneil Hohenboken, Marcus Merriman, Donald Messer, and Richard Shultice.

In athletics the Acacia 1 team reached the semifinals in class A softball before losing to the Phi Kappas and then cheered them on to win the finals. Spring track is ¡ next in line and the boys are wondering just how out of condition they are. Russ Jennet is on the varsity team in the pole vault.

To close this I'll have to tell a slightly sad story; it seems that Ron Durham wanted to have a very special date for the formal so he invited the Veishea Queen of Queens; then the night before the dance he had an emergency appendicitis, a real low blow; however he is O.K. now and in there pitching.

Kansas With the close of another school year, it seems proper that this article should bring you a summary of the events of the Kansas Chapter for the past year. The chapter gathered last fall early in September after spending the summer carrying on varied activities to clean up the house and stage a successful rushing program. Rush week started with a "train date" at the home of Fred Gableman in Kansas City. Through its rushing efforts the chapter grew this year to be one of the largest groups in the chapter's history.

Fall activities got underway with football games and sorority open houses. Kansas Chapter staged an inter-chapter football game with the K-State Chapter the week end of the K. U. vs. K-State football game. Later on the actives beat the pledges in the pledge-active football game. Then there were the hour dances and dessert dances with the sororities. At the annual get-together with the Phi Kaps, Acacia pledges lost the roving plaque to its opposition in the contest for the best skit.

The first big party at the house in the fall was the Egyptian costume party where the dining room was transformed into the tomb of a pyramid. Homecoming rolled around with the fun of house decorations and the pig roast. Then came Thanksgiving vacation.

After Thanksgiving it was just a short step to Christmas with all its parties. The chapter had its children's party with Santa Claus bringing gifts to sixteen underprivileged children on December 10. A week later came the annual Christmas

KANSAS It's Mother's Day at the Kansas Chapter and these thirty tovety ladies were entertained.

Formal. Christmas greetings on ten large Christmas cards added a cheery holiday atmosphere. Climaxing the season's activities was a Christmas dinner at the house before it closed for vacation.

The chapter was saddened by the death of Gerry Raines in January. Finals slipped by and the fall semester ended. Acacia moved up in scholarship from twelfth place to tenth of twenty-four fraternities .

The spring semester started off with the initiation of fifteen men from the fall pledge class. The ceremony was followed by a formal dinner for the new initiates.

Then came the pledge-active basketball game. It was a close game, but the actives pulled ahead in the final seconds.

In March the Kansas City Alumni Association had as guests at one of their dinners at Fred Harveys a number of actives from the chapter.

Immediately following spring vacation, Acacia took third place in the fraternity division for its float in the twenty-fifth annual Kansas Relays Parade. The ten foot champagne glass holding a lovely young lady as "A Toast to our Silver Anniversary" brought a beautiful trophy cup to the Acacia mantel. On its front page, the Lawrence Journal-World pictured Miss¡ Betsy Swigart, member of Kappa Alpha Theta, as she was being hoisted into the glass by a crane boom of a local construction company. Four other Thetas added a touch of beauty to the float. Several rushees were entertained at the house that week end.

The Spring Garden Formal was held the following week end at the Community Building. Decorating one corner of the hall was a rose garden complete with fish pool, rose arbor, and love seat. A landscape scene was painted as a back drop for the band. Completing the decorations were stars hung about the room that glittered in the soft light. The use of programs was a new experience for some, but the party proved to be one of the chapter's finest.

Founders' Day followed on May 7, and Mother's Day was observed on May 14.

Thirty mothers were able to spend the day with their sons at the chapter house.

Following dinner a series of movies taken abo'ut the house and at social functions were shown. A nucleus for a Mothers' . Club was developed. Mrs. John E . Hoffman of Overland Park was elected chairman. The mothers will have a chance to get to know each other better with this new organization. A hay ride was planned

for May 20 by the pledges, but rain cancelled it.

The chapter has had its share of activity men this year. Bill Boyle was vice-president of the freshman class. Bill Van Bebber has served on the executive council of the Inter-Fraternity Council this year and he has been elected vice-president of the council for next fall. Bob Ford has been a member of the engineering council. Ralph McClung has been on the executive council of Pachacamac, Greek men's political party. Sam Willcoxson has been elected to the All-Student Council. Tony Vandergriff has been captain of Pershing Rifles and Dick Roshong and Sam Willcoxson have been lieutenants. Wayne Nielsen has been rush captain for Alpha Kappa Psi, business fraternity, and Bill Van Bebber has been their Master of Rituals. Marvin Liggett and San Willcoxson have been chairmen of their home county clubs. Under the guidance of editor-inchief Tom Van Bebber, the chapter newspaper, "Letter for Home," was revived.

Robert W. Whitzel from Coldwater is a new pledge since the last issue.

Three from the ranks have parted with their pins recently. Bob Ford has given his pin to Doris Young of Topeka, Kansas.

Jeanne Kline of Kansas City is keeping Ed Galyon's pin for him. Loyd Fox is letting Joyce Jones of Frankfort, Kansas, wear his pin. Bill Jenkins is to be married to Ann Carinder of Caney, Kansas, in June. Bill Campbell is engaged to Ruthie Allen of Wichita, Kansas. These engagements were announced at the spring formal.

The officers elected since the last issue are Marvin Liggett, Venerable Dean; 'J.'ony Vandergriff, Senior Dean; Alan Sandford, Junior Dean; Bill Thorne, Secretary; Bill Griffith, Activities Chairman; Jack Willis, Pledge Trainer; Loyd Fox, Senior Steward; and Cameron Dostie, Junior Steward.

On May 8 the senior class, desiring to give the rest of the chapter an opportunity to run a chapter meeting efficiently without them, walked out with the silverware, electric fuses and Mother Collier, leaving spaghetti and jello for their dii:mer while they had dinner in Kansas City at the Hotel Continental. On May 17 the chapter gave a dinner for the seniors.

With the help of Alpha Phi sorority, the chapter got into the proper carnival atmosphere and produced one of the finest booths for the "Michigras" sponsored biannually by the Michigan Union. Our entry, "Loop-A-Fee," an idea stolen from our illinois Chapter, involved throwing loops over the heads of Alpha Phis going round on a revolving platform. The whole booth was in the shape of a huge clown face.

Kansas State One would scarcely realize the number and variety of activities that the Fraternity and its members have taken part in until one starts to summarize the semester's work as I shall try to do for you.

Others who are acting on the theory that two can live cheaper than one are: Kyle Moran to be married to Betty Jane Beaver at Merriam, May 28, and Dean Lovendahl '49 will be married to Betty Haley, Kappa Delta, June 3, in Topeka.

Spring weather brought house cleaning fever with it so we dusted, swept and scrubbed during a "field day" one Saturday. Our lawn is showing the results of the efforts we've put in on it by having a good coat of grass for once. There weren't even any radishes or lettuce planted in it.

A new fire escape adorns the back of the chapter house and Everett Waudby got his pet project accomplished when we put sand and gravel on the parking lot.

We crossed our fingers for Acacia's skits in the YM-x""W's annual Y-Orpheum and won first place in the men's division. Sunday dinners will taste better with the shiny trophy on the mantel where our guests can see it. In the intramural softball play we have a promising young team with a large proportion of pledges on it.

We lost the play-off in our four team section to the Alpha Gamma Rho team whom we had previously beaten.

Our social calendar included a formal dinner-dance held April 29. Dr. Howard Hill, head of the Public Speaking Department gave a short talk that was very good.

At that time, we limited the graduating seniors to a few words by one of their number. The dance, therefore, started on time which is quite notable. We entertained our mothers and dads on May 7 at the Mother's Day Dinner. Founders' Day Banquet was held May 14. The gents ate at the Wareham Hotel while Mother Lyles entertained the ladies with dinner and bridge at the chapter house. Michigan The end of the 1949-1950 school year marks the climax of one of the Michigan Chapter's most successful years.

Collaborating with Theta Delta Chi, the chapter returned from the annual Interfraternity Council Ball with the first place booth award. The winning booth, constructed by members of both houses, was a replica of a Frank Lloyd Wright creation, "Falling Waters." Preceding the

ous house activities, climaxed a most enjoyable afternoon.

One of the biggest social events of the spring term was the chapter's annual Spring Formal May 19. Dancing to the slow and easy tunes of Ted Smith's Orchestra followed a formal dinner at the Washtenaw Country Club.

On the sports front the Michigan Chapter has had its most successful season in many a year. Under the able leadership of athletic director Herbie Neil the chapter has risen from 37th place out of 41 fraternities to 15th place. This rise of 22 positions was made possible by the fine showing of the swimming team which placed 4th in the Interfraternity Swimming meet, the foul-throwing team which placed 6th in foul shot-throwing competition, and the softball team which slugged its way into 3rd place.

The following officers have been elected to guide the chapter during the coming year: Venerable Dean, Paul Campbell; Senior Dean, John Hoyt; Junior Dean, Tom Corsaut; and Secretary, Herbie Neil.

The important job of house manager will be held by Warren Williamson, III, while Raymond Tittle will take over as treasurer. Paul takes over the Venerable Dean's gavel from his brother Dick, the retiring head of the chapter.

Brothers who have been invited to membership in some of the many college honoraries include: Jim Douglas and Larry Sweet, Phi Eta Sigma, freshman honorary fraternity; Ron Watts, Sphinx, scholarship and activities honorary ; Paul Brent-

Wedding bells seem to be ringing continually for Michigan Acacians. The newly-married brothers and their brides are Bill Wynn and Barbara Bull, Dave Stremmel and Jean Porter, George Reazin and Ruth Mansfield, Ken Smith and Norma Mackelwich, and Larry Girton and Margie Carl.

Nebraska With final examinations upon us, graduation just around the corner, and plans being readied for the fall initiation and rush· week, the Nebraska Chapter is preparing to lose five men through graduation this spring, but to replace them with some to spare next fall. Graduating seniors are: Norm Baumgart, civil engineer; Don Chang, B. A. in political science, with distinction; Jack Grobeck, Business Administration; Bob Steinhoff, B. A. in botany; and Bob VanNeste, B. A. in radio speech.

Our pledge ranks, somewhat depleted through the spring initiation, have made a good start toward recovery with the pledging of four new men. They are John Ewing from Nebraska City, Floyd Goff from Burwell, Bill Marbaker from Costa Mesa, California, and Jerry Menefee from Tekamah. A new pledge election was necessitated by the initiation of the old officers, and the results of this election are as follows: President, Pat Allen; vice president, Jim Engh; secretary, Don Cunningham; treasurer, Bill Marbaker, and social chairman, Jerry Menefee.

Our spring initiation and Founders' Day banquet were held on March 25. The seven men activated then are Tom Scott, Bob Hattan, Jack Grobeck, Clarence Furuya, Gene Fischbach, Orval Conner, and Don Chang. The banquet was held at the Cornhusker Hotel that evening with Lloyd J. Marti as toastmaster and Frank M. Johnson as main speaker. A most welcome guest at the initiation ceremonies and speaker at the banquet was Roy Clark.

Following the initiation, at the meeting on April 5, new officers for the following year were elected. The new officers are: Venerable Dean, Gayle Hattan; Senior Dean, Dick Blunk; Junior Dean, Clarence Furuya; Secretary, Don Chang; Treasurer, Orval Conner; House Manager, Al States; and Rushing Chairman, Gene Fischbach.

The social affair of the year, our big spring formal, was held at Cotner Terrace on April 29. Dates were presented with leis of carnations or orchids, flown in from Hawaii, and with that as a central theme, the affair was a great success. Credit for engineering the scheme goes to Clar-

Mother Brown, house mother of the Acacia Chapter, and the first housemother of any Nebraska fraternity , was honored guest at the formal and was presented with her first lei. Chaperons at the dance were Dr. G. W. Rosenlof, University director of admissions and later named honorary member of the Nebraska Chapter, Harry Good, baseketball coach and Indiana alumnus, and L. T. Laase, head of the speech department and Yale alumnus. Music was very ably provided by Walt Goodbrod and his orchestra.

One of our latest initiates, Don Chang, was recently honored by being named as an honorary member of the Corn Cobs, Nebraska men's pep organization. Don is the first honorary member to be chosen by the organization in a number of years.

Other recent campus honors were received by Norm Baumgart, who was named as outstanding civil engineer on the campus; John Taylor, who was elected new president of the local chapter of Scabbard and Blade; and Gordon Francis, who was elected treasurer of the same organization. Congratulations, fellows.

G. W. Rosenlof, University director of admissions, was elected by the chapter to honorary membership. Dr. Rosenlof was a chaperone at our spring formal and has long been one of our strongest backers on the faculty.

Two of our actives really took this spring stuff seriously this year and announced their engagements. They are Milt Grobeck and Dick Blunk, and the girls sporting the new diamonds are Donna Zoroya and Ruth Stevenson respectively.

New Hampshire Being a little disappointed in not receiving any mountains to convert into mole hills we here at New Hampshire have managed to survive through the muddy spring and are now neck-high in final exams.

As we look back over this, our first school year as a chapter of Acacia Fraternity, we all feel a little proud and extremely happy that we have accomplished all that we have. Beginning with that unforgettable date of Dec. 3, 1949, our installation as the 33rd chapter, then to March 4, 1950, when the Alumni Corporation formally purchased our chapter house, up to the week ends of April 14 and May 19, our two initiations, and now to the last week of school with final plans being made for the renovation of the house, the members of the New Hampshire Chapter leave for the summer with plans of an even greater year ahead of them.

First of all it might be well to let you folks know some of the honors that have been bestowed upon several of the New Hampshire Acacians. The following men were recently initiated into Alpha Zeta, national honorary agricultural fraternity: Jack Baker, Kenn Tufts, Gardner "Joe" Smith, George Weston, and Pledge Dick Thomas. One of our new initiates, Bill Croft, has been elected to Sophomore Sphinx, a newly organized honorary society which serves as guardian of Freshman Traditions. 102 ior Skulls, one of the two senior men's honorary societies which selects fifteen junior men who have been outstanding in extra-curricular activities, shown leadership, and maintained average scholarship during their first three years at the University. Kenn also received the honor of being elected secretary of the Skulls. Besides being initiated into Senior Skulls, Dick Stevens was recently elected President of Student Union and Secretary of Student Council. On the athletic side of the picture Phil Hall was elected Co-Captain of the Varsity Winter Track Team for 1950-51 besides getting his track letter.

Bob Tucker, a new initiate, received his letter in lacrosse, and Dick Pratt and Jack Jacobsmeyer both received their letters in track.

Since the last issue of the TRIAD the New Hampshire Chapter has held two complete initiations. The first initiation, held on April 14, 15, and 16, brought 13 new brothers into the chapter. Although this was our first initiation the old actives are to be congratulated upon the excellent job they did. Our second initiation week end on May 19, 20, and 21 increased our active membership to 59, adding 17 new members to the chapter roll. (See accompanying pictures for names, etc.) This second initiation was a decided improvement over the first and gave good evidence of some good initiation teams for next year. Following both initiations the entire chapter attended church services as a body and after the last initiation a banquet was held in Putnam Hall for both groups of new initiates. The principal speaker at the banquet was Dean Davis, Acting Dean of Men, who spoke briefly upon Acacia's position and role on the University of New Hampshire's campus.

Following the banquet the Alumni Corporation met with the actives at which time "Marty" Delbrouck was reelected as our chapter advisor. Congratulations, Marty!

As proof that the alumni members have been equally busy getting new members the following men were initiated. along with the actives in our two initiations: Charles Bottorff, Pearl River, N. Y.; Raymond Grandone, Needham, Mass.; Charles Yeaton, Suncook; Kenneth Gleason, Mansfield, Mass.; Alan Stephens, Needham, Mass.; Charles Hoagland, Concord ; Mansfield Crafts, Pembroke; Frederick Clarke, Concord; and Charles McKee, Concord.

This brings our alumni membership up to 48 plus 5 more who are going to join but because of distance and other reasons were unable to come here for our two initiations.

On May 6 the University of New Hampshire celebrated Mother's Day at which time the entire campus was turned over to "Mom." We welcomed and entertained our mothers and friends at a tea in the Pine Room of Ballard Hall the site of our social events until we m'ove into our house.

As our celebration Junior Prom Week End. we had our Second Annual Spring Outing on Saturday, May 13. The original intention for the day was a beach party at Ogunquit, Maine, but after we got there and were blown away by the wind and sand, we (the wind and sand) changed our minds and came back to cam-

pus full of hamburgers and a little tired but still willing and ready to have a "vic" dance for the evening. Who will ever forget George Zanes' hypnotic powers on Lee Towle or Norma Farrar's rendition of "Making Love Mountain Style" ?

The evening of May 19 was the climax of the tiring and earnest efforts of John Lyon and George Tsirimokos as directors and Phil Smith as accompanist in presenting a group of 14 Acacians singing two numbers from Sigmund Romberg's "Student Prince" in the annual IFC Songfest in competition with 13 fraternities, sororities, and dorms. Although the fellows didn't come home with the cup they certainly made a good impression and partially satisfied some of the campus curiosity as to just what the new chapter of Acacia could do.

Athletically speaking we have done fairly well for beginners in intramurals.

We actively took part in softball winning 4 out of 6 games and coming out first in our league but losing to Kappa Sigma in the seffii-finals. As for tennis and golf let it be said that we participated!

At the time of this writing no construction has been started on our chapter house but the final plans are nearly completed, the tenants have moved out, the contracts are being made and nearly everything seems to be in order to begin renovating within the next couple of weeks. The rooms, which are all double with the exception of one triple, have been assigned to the fellows and we are anxiously awaiting next fall when 51 Acacians will move into the new chapter house on Mill Road.

Northwestern Ah, Spring is in the air and young men's fancies lightly turn to thoughts of . . . finals, only a few days off. But we can dream of summer . . . three months of classless lounging, recovery, and work: Some of the brethren are planning to attend the Conclave at Boulder, Colorado, this summer; others plan to work.

Spring quarter saw two new faces around the house. Larry Brown, Wilmette, and Dick Bain, Oak Park, the latest victims of open rushing, are learning to do pledge duties with a smile.

Early in the quarter four initiates joyfully received their jeweled pins after surviving the rigors of initiation. Jack DeViney, Washington, D . C., George Anderson, New York City, Phil Meany, Chicago, and Ralph Wyand, Indianapolis, Ind., are the new brothers.

Elections, held early in May, produced officers for the next half-year. Ben Hill was reelected Venerable Dean via white ballot. Ron Scherer captured .the post of Senior Dean, and Wendell Cantwell became Junior Dean on a white ballot .. . seems as though white ballots were in vogue that night. .. . Paul Groat was reelected Treasurer and House Manager on another white ballot. Bill Reed took Rushing Chairman, followed by a white ballot on which Chuck Lundstrom was elected Intramural Manager .. . Voted outstanding 1M athlete of the year was Brother John Jansen, who took honors for the house in horseshoes, tennis, golf, and IM free-

throw, as well as snagging positions on our football, basketball, and softball teams.

Finishing off elections, Roy C. Clark was unanimously reelected as Chapter Adviser.

Intramural sports showed a big jump this quarter ... from eighth place at the end of winter quarter to fourth place in the final 1M sweepstakes . . . this out of 27 fraternities, five independent houses, and some other groups ... the rush started when high-scoring Brothers Don Reddicliffe and Bill Colburn, Frank Hulka and John Jansen took second place in the IM free-throw contest ... Herb Grayson and Cliff Kong reached the golf semifinals for more points ... Stacey Angle and Brother Jansen reached the quarterfinals in tennis . . . . Frank Hulka and John Jansen gained more points by staying to the semifinals in horseshoes. . . . Brother Jan sen pitched our softball team through an undefeated season to win another trophy ... a first place in our softball league.

Thirty orphans, ages six to fifteen, scrambled all over the house, screaming as loud as they could, stuffing themselves with candies and ice cream, and listening most attentively as Brother John Collins told his favorite stories at our Easter Or- â&#x20AC;˘ phan party. . . . Jim Warner arranged with Uhlich Orphanage to supply the kids, we did the rest . . . our Easter Orphan party is a tradition started several years ago which we hope to see continued. Two weeks later the brethren traveled West to the Clover Club for an evening of dancing and singing the old songs . . . butchered bodies, luminous ghosts, and a genuine Frankenstein provided the background for our Haunted House party, an annual shudderfest planned by Brothers Bill Reed and Bill Posegate ... no casualties though . . . the following week end saw a stag picnic at Harms Woods where the old joviality returned to the assembled brethren . .. white coats made quite a showing at the Mohawk Country Club, way, way, way West where the Spring Formal was held .. . before the Formal, Dick Wagner and his family entertained those brothers who could find the Wagner home in Park Ridge, Til. We were glad to see so many alumni at the Formal. ... Mr. and Mrs. Bud Brenton, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Willsey, Jim Watkins and the Mrs., and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Walker ... also George Gilbert, Bob Firesteen, and Dick Foss contributed to the fun.

On Mother's Day our own Mothers' Club presented us with a second silver service to match the set they gave to us Fall quarter . . . now we have correct service for both tea and coffee in beautiful matching urns ... here's orchids to the Mothers for their help and inspiration during the past year, and all the years.

Late in May the air of the South Quads was filled with song as we held three serenades in the same night for Chi Omega Cara Strong and Norman Ehinger, Alpha Xi Delta Joanne Hunter and Paul Groat, and Zeta Tau Alpha Lynn Wade and Bob Dorn.

Looking back over the past year, we see that it's been real for some of us .. . such as Brother Claude S'owle, who completed a great job as V.D. this winter quarter, Frank Hulka, our former IM Manager who led us to many victories throughout the year, and our hard-working House Manager Paul Groat. Sowle and Hulka are among the twenty-four seniors we will lose in a few days.

Ohio State Spring is here, and finals are upon us.

It has been a touch and go quarter for we of Ohio State. Early quarter rushing saw the chapter pledge six new men, namely, Ted Brennan, Columbus; Jud Capell, Columbus; Vern Cornell, Columbus; Wendell Keyes, Cleveland; Jerry Welmes, Lorain, and Harvey Covert, Jr., Peebles.

Those persons who became active members during the Spring Quarter are Peter Gr off, Cleveland; Paul Utley, Jeffersonville, Indiana; George Wadge, Cleveland, and Scott Wholaver, Columbus. The chapter instituted a few new procedures during initiation week and they were warmly accepted by the neophytes. During the latter part of the week, they were given a respite by their "comrades-at-hazing" and w ere tendered a party at the Southern Hotel, Columbus, by the active chapter members.

Bruce Garnand, formerly with the Kansas State Chapter, was recently elected Treasurer of Alpha Kappa Psi, a commerce professional fraternity. Dick Smeltzer, Gallipolis, has been honored with the title of Executive Officer in charge of Pershing Rifles. "PR's", as they are known, are a tradition at every football game for they begin each game by raising the Stars and Stripes to the tune of our National Anthem. Dick holds the rank of Cadet Second Lieutenant and is currently instructing two drill classes in ROTC. Redecorating has been the theme around the house during the past two quarters. The living room is our pride and joy and has a striking appeal to anyone upon entering the house. New rose drapes adorn the windows and the room sports new sectional furniture of such colors as green, tan, grey and white. To go with this modern leatherette design, we have two blonde end tables (where are the blondes? ) and a matching coffee table.

The new furniture was chosen with the idea that it might go well with the new house the chapter has in mind. The dorms and hallway received a much needed facelifting, too. The southwest room has been papered with a notty pine to make the roommates of "Dusty" Dave Williams and "The Boy from Dixie" feel more at home.

A few weeks ago the trophy shelves w ere rearranged to make room for another bronze statue. It was awarded to the chapter for coming through with four

straight wins in the recent intra-mural softball tournament, putting the chapter on top as League Champs. Jim Bushman coached and managed the team.

The social events for the quarter included the Initiation Banquet held at the Beechwald Restaurant, April 30; a dance and rush party at Cubbage Corners on May 6; "Founders' Day," May 13, saw a reunion of alumni and undergrads as they talked and dined at a banquet held at the house. Dr. H. Vallance, Dean of the Graduate School, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, was the speaker for the evening. Following the banquet, the Spring Formal was held at the Columbus Riding Academy.

A highlight of the season was the "All Ohio Acacia Day" held at Chillicothe, on May 20. Due to a last minute change in plans, Miami University, and Cincinnati University chapters were unable to attend.

Ohio U. and Ohio State U . battled through a nine inning softball thriller with State coming out on the short end of a score of 9-8. A trophy, purchased jointly by the four chapters and to be placed on a rotating basis, was awarded to the winning team and chapter.

"Mother As a College Boy" was the theme of a festive week end on May 27 and 28. The mothers of the members took over the house lock, stock, and barrel.

The house men moved out and the "Moms" moved in. The activities included a tour of the campus, a games party, a serenade, church on Sunday, and a scrumptious meal, cooked by our own Betty Geiger. College life in fraternities is no longer a deep, dark secret to these moms.

Pinnings included Dean Dillory to Martha Adams, LaRue ; Jim Walker, Lima, to Marjorie Grady, also of Lima; Russ Samuels, Niles, to Carolyn Bryan, Springfield.

Dick Smeltzer, Gallipolis, is now engaged to Judy Wetherhold of the same town.

Venerable Dean "Chuck" Hummel was presented with a key during the Council of Fraternity Presidents and Freshman Fraternity Council Banquet held at the Ohio Union on May 16. The banquet was to honor men who have been active in fraternity affairs on campus during the past year. "Chuck" has since retired as President of the Council, a post which he held for over a year.

Oklahoma A. & M. The close of the spring term is drawing near and with it comes time for a bit of information to our brothers of the accomplishments of Acacia at Oklahoma A. & M. since the last issue of the TRIAD was published.

In the sports line our volley ball team placed 3rd in the all-college tourney with the odd occurrence of being the only team to defeat the all-college champions in a game. The soft ball team came in fourth under very stiff competition from other fraternity teams on the campus. We have hopes ana material for some champion teams in the coming years.

It seems rather odd that the boys in the house for some unknown reason do not like to wear their pins. First it was Don Clark who decided to place ¡ his pin on Gretchen Webber's sweater so that he could look at it at a different angle. Miss Webber is a Pi Beta Phi who comes from Enid. Two more of our brothers hardly wore their pins two weeks when their pins appeared on feminine sweaters. They are Dean Canfield who is pinned to Nita Brown of Stillwater and Robert Clodfelter who is pinned to Ramona Conley. The fourth pin to find a home on a feminine personality was our Senior Dean, Thomas

C. Hayden, Jr.'s pin. The lucky girl is Miss Donna Dobbs, Headlton. Brother Hayden is the son of Thomas Clay Hayden of the Tilinois chapter.

Our Founders' Day celebration was a success even though we were almost pounded to pieces by a hailstorm.

The boys found that Paul Brown, attorney at law from Oklahoma City, had Kappa Sigma stickers on his car so they proceeded to place some of our own decals in conspicuous places on the car windows.

The Triangle Ball was held in Tulsa at the Tulsa Club, with a dinner at Smith's Restaurant preceding the dance. Our guests at the dance included, along with many others, John Ellison, Warren Norlin, Fred Rouse, and John Bowen from the Acacia colony at the University of Arkansas. We were very glad to have everyone who was able to attend the dance and will be looking forward to your return, along with anyone else who can attend the dance next year. The dance is to be held in the ballroom of the new Student Union building here on the campus.

We have held a number of dinners, for rushees on the campus and high school seniors in towns and cities nearby, at the chapter house.

Our rush program included a picnic held at Lake Carl Blackwell west of the city. It was a beautiful day until we arrived at the picnic site, when the wind came up and turned cold. We were forced to play softball in grass about a foot high but with the added effort of all members present and with the large amount of barbecue we had a successful picnic in spite of the elements.

Three recent pledges to our chapter are Don Hayes, a junior in industrial engineering from Tulsa, Richard Burk, a sophomore majoring in psychology from Oklahoma City, and Wallace Lee, a freshman from Marlin, Oklahoma.

May 7 was our annual Family Day here at the chapter house. The Mothers' Club was in complete charge of a covered dish buffet dinner. It really was a treat to get to dig into all that home-cooked food. Several of the mothers were here for the first time and many of those mothers were beginning to plan to come back for next year's celebration before they left.

The climax of the afternoon was the Mothers' Club meeting in which Mrs. E. E. Harnden was reelected president, Mrs. Arle Schmidt was elected vice-president, Mrs. J. E. Lathers elected secretary, and Mrs. John Ives was elected treasurer.

Improvements around the house include a new hedge in place of the rose bushes in front of the house and the lawn reseeded to grass by Brother Dean Canfield.

Brother James L . Green has engineered the beginning of a long range planning committee, to plan all the events to be participated in by the chapter well in advance so that we may produce better dances, dinners, teams for sports, etc. The committee has done quite a lot of planning and organizing in the short time since it has been formed .

Oregon State For the first time since reactivation, the Oregon State chapter is in the hands of younger men, non-veterans. All the retiring officers were veterans. Of the new officers, only one is a veteran. The opening of spring term saw the election of officers.

The new Venerable Dean is Bob Hercher from Roseburg, Senior Dean is Daryl Davis, and Jack Pimentel is Junior Dean.

Jack Shearer has taken over the duties of Secretary, Don Lindquist is the new Treasurer, and the House Manager's job went to Chuck Greenlund.

This year's list of graduating seniors is truly impressive, as nineteen men will don caps and gowns June 5. Most of the seniors have been members since reactivation and much credit should go to them for the fine job they have done. They are: Harvey J. Barnickol, Rex W. Beeman, Douglas H. Blair, Marion G. Dazey, Murrey A. Dumas, William C. Gunther, Raymond M. Hare and Walter E. Hercher.

Howard G. Kinzey, Lyle A. Knower, Stephen A. D. Meek, Robert G. Neer, Ronald R. Rickey, Eric F. Robathan, Paul E. Rqwe, James L . Sampson, Abraham L. Schroeder, Andrew V. Smith and Roswell A. Ten Eyck complete the list.

Rushing, under the direction of Daryl Davis, is under way. New pledges, all from Oregon, are: Robert Castlio, Rainier; Richard Carnahan, Tillamook; Oliver Allen, Roseburg; Philip Kaser, also from Roseburg. With the large number of seniors leaving, we need a full scale summer program and the cooperation of both alumni and active members. Summer activities are being planned, preparatory to fall rushing in September.

On June 11 Oregon State Chapter initiated its first honorary member, Mr. Carl E. Hoppe, 33d degree Mason, of Portland. Initiation ceremonies were held in a Portland Masonic lodge and were attended

by Acacians of many chapters residing in and near Portland.

Other initiates were: Wayne Chezem, Hugh Richerson, Frank Hoffman, Russell Parkinson, William Ploense, and Alumnus Claud Sumpter.

Election of Brother Hoppe and Sumpter was on joint recommendations of alumni and actives.

Our social calendar has been extremely full this term. Neophytes Charles Greenlund and Jack Pimentel took the hazardous journey on AprilS and are now wearers of the jeweled pin. April 15 saw high school seniors starting to arrive from all over the state for Senior Week End. Some top-notch rushee prospects were obtained for next fall.

The house was swarming with activity on the week end of April 22-23 when a group of DeMolays descended upon us.

They were here in Corvallis at the DeMolay Conclave. Over twenty were bedded down, fed, and entertained, and were special guests at our Masonic Open House, also of this week end. Prominent Masons and their wives attended and many new acquaintances were made.

Wives of alumni and actives assisted in the dining room. Pouring were Mesdames E. B. Beaty, Douglas Blair, P.M. Brandt,

105 D. M. Goode, Lyle Knower, and J. C. Moore.

Over twenty mothers attended Mothers' Week End festivities May 6. The highlight of the week end was the son-mother banquet Sunday afternoon.

On the night of May 13 our chapter withdrew from the rigors of college life and traveled to the far away land of Egypt.

For it was this night that we introduced our annual costume dance, "A Night on the Nile." Don Linquist was dance chairman and Wayne Chezem decoration chairman. The Masonic Temple was transformed into an evening on the banks of the Nile. A striking effect was accomplished by the use of a fluorescent mural illuminated by black lightning. The entrance to the hall was made through an archway of "mortared stone." In the center of the floor was an oasis which contained an "artesian spring" surrounded by a grove of palms. At one end of the hall was a tomb of mummies. Circulating through these scenes of the ancient past were the garbed figures of the ''Acacian Egyptians" and their "Egyptian dates." In such an atmosphere of romance and mystery, what else could be possible but a successful evening?

We are grateful for many fine gifts during the year. Alumnus Oscar Arnsberg, of Auburn, California, brought us a set of the New Standard Encyclopedia. He is collecting for us a set of pennants from other chapters on an exchange plan. Other gifts have included a glass punch bowl and cups, glass jelly dishes, a copper trough for growing plants, end tables and lamps. Especially generous have been the members of our Mothers' Club.

Penn State A milestone is passed as we prepare to close the books on another school year. A balance of the books shows a huge surplus of good times enjoyed and worthwhile achievements accomplished. Here is the prepared auditor's statement: Scholastic honors have definitely been on the credit side both for the chapter and for individuals. Recently released statistics showed that the chapter ranked seventh academically among fifty fraternities on campus. Individual honors were received during the year when the following men were elected to honoraries: William Chester Dietz to Sigma Gamma Epsilon; Vernon Hurd Ritter to Eta Kappa Nu; Robert Edward Calder to Chi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi; Ernest Culbertson Skipper to Phi Mu Alpha and Psi Chi. Extra curricular activities have been another big asset. Edward Thomas Ruc'h and Robert Calder have been elected to the Engineering Student Council for the next school year. The newly revived Society of American Military Engineers has attracted much interest as evidenced by the election of Edward Ruch and Harry Carson Ankne to the Vice-Presidency and Secretary-Treasurership respectively of this growing organization. Charles Rippey Hable and George William Ripple were honored by selection for Pershing Rifles, the honorary R. 0. T. C. group.

Journalism has attracted Alan Miller Lehman and Merlin Ray Miller both of whom serve on the staff of the "Penn State Farmer." An article by Robert Howard Goodman was recently published in the "Penn State Engineer." Robert Merrill Free borough has been active in Alpha Phi Omega, a campus service fraternity.

Athletics reached a pinnacle of participation this past year with entries in almost every intra-mural sport offered in the complete program sponsored here at Penn State. The won and lost records, although not too impressive, show that with some improvement there are big possibilities in store for next year.

The social calendar has been very successful with four houseparties during the course of the year. As this article is written the memory is still vivid of a spectacular windup of these formal social activities. The week end of May 19 and 20 was Senior Ball week end and the date for the final houseparty. Preparations for this houseparty have been going on since the beginning of May, the planning dates back even further. The theme for decorations and costumes at the Saturday night dance was an Indian Village Scene and it was a howling success. As a warm up for the evening's festivities we enjoyed an afternoon picnic at nearby Greenwood Furnace. Although old Jupiter Pluvius frowned some in the morning he finally softened and sent beautiful weather in the afternoon and evening. All in all the week end was a grand success and added much to the credit side of our ledger.

As a final balance we must bid farewell to our graduating seniors. On June 12 we lose David Edward Keller, Harry Wilson Reid, Wilbur Richard Evans, Frank Musser Rupp, Vernon Hurd Ritter, Marvin Antone Yeager, Robert Theodore Fellows and Rolf Erling Wald. As a final salute to these men we are having a picnic in their honor on May 30.

With this we complete our audit and ease close the book of chapter activities.

It is not an end, but only a pause until we make the first entry next fall.

Purdue The Purdue Chapter is now instructing the following men in the teachings of Pythagoras: George Roger Griffiths, Engineering 2, Gary; Charles E. Hines, Agriculture 2, Boonville; Frank J. Merritt, Engineering 2, Wabash; William R. Dufendach, Engineering 4, Kokomo; and Lowell C. Ewart, Agriculture 2, Vandalia, Ill. This year, instead of our traditional Spring Formal Dance, we had a Spring Duo with Alpha Chi Rho. With the work of the two social committees, April first was selected as the date and plans of decorating and other details were made. After the dance was over, the general opinion seemed to be that the Spring Duo is here to stay. The dates were pleased with the billfolds presented to them, as they were with the baby orchid corsages. As a whole, this semester has been one in which social life has been abundant. Campus events, highlighted by the Interfraternity Ball and Junior Prom, have kept us from be-

106 coming bored. In fact, some of us are beginning to like it here!

The sports program this spring is more favorable then it has been for several seasons. The basketball and volleyball teams both placed fourth in their respective interfraternity leagues. The volleyball team then went on to win the AllCampus tourney, defeating champions of four intramural leagues. At the present we are occupied in the intramural softball program. We also have entries in the tennis tourney and the horseshoe tourney.

Thanks to the prolific efforts of the Building Association, several areas in the house are scheduled for a face-lifting this summer. The card room will receive a new ceiling and wall covering of Celotex. The floor of the r oom will be completely carpeted, using unworn parts of the old living room carpet. The new living room rug will be taken up this summer to facilitate sanding and varnishing the floor.

Other improvements planned for this summer include rubber tile on the kitchen floor, a new set of china, an additional filing cabinet, and repainting the dining room.

Because of the large number of graduating seniors, rushing has been given extra emphasis in order to fill the resulting vacancies. Eighteen high school students have been entertained during various week ends this spring. From the time the guests arrived Friday evening until

Through the year the combined efforts of the actives and two successive groups of pledges have entirely renovated three floors of the house. Although yet to be completed, the basement is expected to be ready to serve as a kitchen, dining room and game room early in the fall term. Arrangements have been made to install the

dining facilities and revamp the hot water system over the summer vacation.

Many of the brothers and pledges expect to return early in the fall to help complete kitchen arrangements.

Despite the scholastic and constructional strains of the year, the comparatively new chapter has made great progress in making its bid for social and athletic prominence on campus. Although our teams have yet to find themselves among the winners in interfraternity competition, they lmve managed to hit a good .500 and keep out of the lowest brackets. We believe that we have had more than our share of compliments when it comes to social affairs. "Doc" Haney, our Chapter Advisor and official punchmaker, has consistently come through with the best in liquid refreshment. Russ Southwick and Larry Korb and a few of the other artists of the group have come up with the novel ideas for parties and politics. The annual political campaign found Larry interviewing a man who had come from Mars (Kappa Tau) on a flying saucer to vote the Combine candidates.

But even with all the other activities, the chapter has not thrown away the Ritual Book. Two initiations have increased the roll numbers by thirteen. The fall initiation was covered in an earlier issue, but the brothers who were initiated in March are to here be mentioned. Four '52s and two '53s have recently become active, they are : Lawrence J. Korb, Chemical Engineering, Warren, Penna.; John M. Down, Mechanical Engineering, Scotia; Robert A. Woodall, Management Engineering, Paxton, Mass.; John T. Shortly thereafter the brothers gained momentary relief from the proverbial grind in the form of Easter vacation. But this was short lived, and the return to school meant the election of officers.

Sweeping the election for the spotlight position of V.D. was brother Don Campbell. Don has since well proven his capability for that position, and we are looking toward an even more prosperous '50'51 season under his guidance. Don is a '51 Physics major from Philly. Other elective positions went to : Senior Dean-Russ Southwick, Junior Dean-Hal Maddix, Secretary-Dick Boynton, TreasurerBob Davis, and Senior Steward-Don Green. Larry Korb was appointed Pledgemaster to assist the Senior Dean, and Walt McClintock is to be the Kitchen Manager for the coming year.

Spring activities have been at a feverish pace. Within a few short weeks the brothers participated in an election campaign for the all-campus Grand Marshal and subsidiary offices, the I.F.C. Song Fest, and the activities of the Soiree week end.

Soiree is "the" dance of the year on campus, and with this in mind we made a good bid for "the" party of the year on Friday night of the week end. The theme of the dance was "Parisian Holiday," and as our part of the theme we selected an "Apache Dance" as an appropriate PreSoiree function. Many of the brothers purchased yachting caps for the occasion, and with a few additions, we hope to make

In May our combined Graduation and Pledge banquet was a rousing success.

Nearly everyone connected with the chapter from alumni to the newest pledge assembled at the "Cat and Fiddle" to welcome the new and pay tribute to those who will soon become members of the Alumni Association. This last function of the year marked the end of a very successful season for the chapter. The best wishes of all the brothers go with these graduating Seniors; Duane B . Southern California CHmaxing a year of activities which saw Southern California Acacia reap a tremendous harvest of honors and distinctions, the span of time since the last issue of the TRIAD has seen the chapter even more emphatically assert its position in the front rank of fraternities in the lair of the Trojan, beloved old SC. As the university's huge auditorium was bulging up to the second balcony, our song-fest men, fifteen strong, marched to the stage in their white dinner jackets, stood before the great cardinal curtain in the dazzling spotlights, and captured the hearts of the audience and the ballots of the judges and brought back to our trophy case the impressively crested plaque emblematic of being the finest choral ensemble in the entire contest. In the contest, which featured 16 other groups in two divisions, Acacia was esteemed the best all-around singing group in either classification! This garnering of our second first-place award in three years of competition was largely due to the arrangement and conducting of Newt Metfessel who skippered the crew which included Roger Stewart, Glynn Boies, Bob Carillo, Bill Clemens, Jack Lindgren, John Locke, Rex Warner, Ron Burbank, Morrie Johnson, Ted Schuyler, Bob Lillevick, Bill McCulloch, Bill Rogers, and Don Gibbs.

To make the evening a complete Acacia show, Bill McCulloch played the university's gigantic pipe organ before the singing and at the intermissions. Universal shouts of, "More!" greeted Bill each time he finished extracting modern bounce and tone from the monster musical machine, and the auditorium shook with

eager response when Bill led the crowd in community singing. Of course the victory and the coveted award touched off a spontaneous celebration, and, amid the congratulations of the university, the chapter left for a party which lasted until the not-so-wee hours of the next morning.

Another recent staging of the annual open house to which all the members brought their families to see the interior of the house and the exterior of their fellow chapter members. Over 100 guests toured the establishment and partook of the cake and punch from the silver laden table with the usual reaffirmation of good will among the chapter and the parents once more expressed as the relatives and friends of the fraternity met or renewed acquaintances during the event which was chairmaned by nervous-as-a-bride Dave Fischer.

Many honors have been brought to the chapter since the last issue of the TRIAD as Andy Ulrich was elected to Trojan Knights, senior service-honorary group; Roger Stewart was elected to Trojan Squires, sophomore service - honorary group; Bill McCulloch was elected vicepresident of the college of music; Don McKenzie was elected to Sigma Xi, national chemistry honorary; Len Warren was elected to Alpha Kappa Psi, commerce honorary; Bill Stanhagen was elected to the presidency of the Council on Religion at the University, gaining with this a seat on the student senate, and Morrie Johnson and Joe Bloch were selected for membership in the '50 Club, a group of 50¡ graduating seniors who will form a nucleus around which to build the future alumni activities of the entire class of '50. Later Morrie was elected permanent chairman of the group of hand-picked seniors.

This same Morrie Johnson ran true to form and was outstanding in yet another field, as he placed third in a speech contest which began eliminations from a field of around 400 contestants from the speech classes at SC. It begins to be apparent that either the chapter really has a good bulldog in ol' slobberpus Pythagoras, or a considerable contingent of dog show judges are candidates for canvas jackets with wrap-around sleeves. The whale faced terror has recently won two puppy-class first prizes at American Kennel Club shows, and has the trophy and ribbons to prove it, even though he still seems like a simple-minded, drooling, horse meat eater to the majority of . the chapter. Our little hairy cube-head has also picked up the endearing habit of engaging in playful altercations with all 'the other canines in the vi-

cinity, and until the chapter took steps to keep him from tearing up the dog population of the city, our little curl-tail condensed mountain lion had been making serious inroads on the lower limbs of the area's taller dogs.

An unusually large segment of the pouse was graduated this June as Glynn Boies, Bob Brenchley, Bob Carillo, Don Daniels, Joe Bloch, Stanley Boggess, Lester Gunther, Bob Madsen, Bill Rogers, Bob Davis, Morrie Johnson, Jay Lynn, John Locke and Tom Hurley were members of the class of 1950. These men were recently honored at the yearly senior dinner at which time they announced their senior gift to the housea set of crested china to grace the board in future Acacia meals.

Among the faculty Acacians on campus, Dr. Robert F . Craig, Nebraska, professor of foreign trade, was recently chosen the most popular teacher in the University in a campus-wide election. At an assembly of the students, Dr. Craig, generous in nature and proportion, accepted his trophy and thanked the members of the chapter for their support of his candidacy in the election. Also, Dr. Joy Leonard, Yale, for 19 years the head of the department ¡o.f economics at SC, was honored by a farewell banquet to which all the luminaries of the University came to give their 't estimonials for him.

Sportswise, the bowlers and the tracksters have held the spotlight along with the chapter team entered in the intrafraternity softball league and the divot diggers who use their club-lugging as an excuse to get out and soak up the sun each week. On a more social level, but perhaps still precariously in the realm of athletics, our men and those from the Acacia chapter at UCLA, which stands for the Unsympathetic Congress of Littleminded AntiTrojans, engaged in a picnic and baseball game. Through the great good nature of our men, the Uclans were given four runs while our score was mercifully held to a mere seven.

Of course, the highlight of the social year was the annual Spring Formal, held this year at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The setting of soft lights and formal dress combined in the plush "El Rodeo" room of

Taking to heart the axiom about faint hearts and fair maidens, both Ray Richert and Dick Baerreson took the plunge and then passed cigars to announce to the brethren their transferring of their pins and their affections. Ray gave the glad news that he had pinned Jane Carrillo, Kappa Delta, while Dick revealed Katy Beattie, Tri Delt, as the object of his intentions.

We recently enjoyed a brief visit from Gayler Alexander of the Kansas University chapter. He was down here looking for a job, since he knew that Texas held so many more opportunities than any other state in the Union. We are looking forward to having you associated with the Texas chapter, by proxy at least, after you've graduated, Gayler.

In the lovelorn redeemed column we are proud to announce that three of our members have let their hearts guide their heads and consequently have mysteriously misplaced their pins. Jack Irion lost his pin a few months ago to Loraine Baird, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

We still cannot understand how Jack can go out every night and yet maintain his grades. George Smyth parted company with his pin less than a month ago. His loss was Loretta Lamm's gain. She is a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Our past Venerable Dean, Bim Bell, took the biggest step of his life when he decided to marry Joan Swan; and since the feeling was mutual, they will be married in early June at Brookings, Oregon, where Joan calls home. She is working on a masters degree in Botany here at the University.

Bim is working on a degree in Zoology. I always knew something good would come of these zoologists.

In keeping with Texas Acacia's traditionally high scholastic rating we've had several men elected to honoraries this semester. Vaun Johansen, our Venerable Dean, was elected to membership in Sigma Iota Epsilon, management fraternity; and Alpha Kappa Psi, professional business fraternity. Dave Hiner is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, accounting fraternity; and Joe Smyer was elected to membership in Phi Alpha Theta, history fraternity.

George Allen is a member of Phi Sigma, biological society. Joe and George are now treasurers of their respective organizations. Bill Clark is a member of Delta Nu Alpha, transportation fraternity. In addition Bill was recently elected secretary of the Inter Fraternity Council.

In the field of Campus activities one of our most active members is Jack Steele.

He was chairman of the traffic committee for the Roundup parade, chairman of the publicity committee for student elections, committee member on the script committee for Varsity Carnival, and is presently a member of Alpha Phi Omega and Cowboys, an honorary service organization.

Mickey Haggard deserves plaudits for his record while in school. He was the outstanding military student of the year and was elected to Goodfellows. He is now serving as a lieutenant in the U. S. Army.

Within the chapter our hardest workers were Lee Hay, who received the work horse award; and Jay Barnes, who was voted outstanding Acacian of the year.

Not all is pomp and circumstance, however. We have two men whose onerous deeds must be recorded here, though it may mean eternal disgrace for our chapter. Paul Rothermel by being his genial self and having so many influential po-

109 litical friends was proclaimed one of the Ten Most Hated men on the campus. Our other fiasco can be attributed to Fred Rogers who has the ignominious distinction of having given the worst speech of the year of any member of Rusk Literary Debating Society. Oh well, to each his own.

GEORGE ALLEN

UCLA Comes the end of another college year with all of us cramming for final exams and looking forward to relaxing on the sands of the blue Pacific all summer long.

(Well, we can dream can't we.) The year has been one of much activity for us. The chapter now numbers 32 actives and 18 pledges and with the new house we are setting our "caps" for bigger and better things.

Summer plans for the chapter house call for complete redecoration of the living room, dining room, and TV room. (We call it the TV room but as yet there is no TV.) Under the direction of Cliff Lush, Minnesota, work will proceed in the order of priority. The rest of the house is in fair order.

Rushing out to enroll in the "School of Hard Knocks" will be our graduates of 1950: Allan Granda, Richard Smith, Pierre Kern, Robert Deter, Stewart Fliege, and yours truly, God and Professors will-

retary; and Cletus Stirewalt, House Manager. Robert Schlemmer remains to lead the chapter as Venerable Dean.

On May 13, the Mothers' Club gave the chapter a buffet supper. The brothers and their dates are still talking about the wonderful feast. At present the Mothers are working on carpeting for the downstairs and are fast becoming a very active group.

"Catalina Week End" sponsored by the Junior class found the Acacia crew and their dates out in full force with their own yacht. Some Hawaiian entertainers were aboard and kept us laughing all the way over and back. A "dixieland" band on the island proved to be the main distraction during the 2 days. (Attention Ed Kelly.)

Our recent "Night on the Nile" proved to be the novelty dance of the year with everyone turning to in Egyptian garb. We had planned to rent a camel for the occasion but found we could not bring it into Westwood Village. Huge pillars, sphinx, and pyramids made intriguing decorations. " The Cq,se of the Missing J ewelted Triangles" was recently solved. One was stolen from Gordon Durfee by Margaret Coulsen, Alpha Omicron Pi. The other was snitched from Robert Shaw by Alice DeCrow. Our congrats to both of these couples.

A number of us plan to venture back into the wilds of Colorado come the last of August. That Boulder hospitality better be good.

It was with deep regret that the chapter accepted the resignation of Dr. Frank Reinsch as Chapter Adviser here at UCLA. Frank has been actively working for us since the very beginning. As Professor of German at the University, he will take sabbatical leave from his post and venture to Belfast, Irel~nd; for most of 1951. We wish him luck in his travels.

Washington Looking back over the year, one event stands out as being the most important to the house: the electing by the university student body of Clarence "Mac" McCredy to the ASUW presidency. The boys worked day and night during the elections week making and carrying signs, calling friends, and generally campaigning like mad. Then when the election was over and Mac won by a landslide, we celebrated with equal enthusiasm.

110 ness, and head man in the beautiful, new Student Union Building. No newcomer to campus politics, he has been vice-president and president of the Associated Men Students, Homecoming Dance Chairman, and IFC delegate. He belongs to all three campus activities honoraries: Purple Shield, Oval Club, and Fir Tree. Last year his name was placed on our honor plaque as outstanding Acacian of the Washington Chapter.

Throughout the year the house has emphasized campus activities. Jerry Hall, Don Turnbow, Rollin Cutts, Ron Hendry, Ralph Thornton, and Gordon Wood have been on ASUW and AMS committees. Acacia took second place in the Campus Chest solicitations contest, and a fine cup proclaiming this fact now rests on the fire place mantel.

Social functions have also earned special attention this year. Most of our firesides have been costume parties this year and with the costumes have come extra spirit and fun. The names given to some of these parties should be indicative of the fun we have been having: Beach Party (held in the house, beach brought in), Pajama Party, Barn Dance, Pirates Ball, Victory Dance, and Hill Billy Hoe Down.

Spring quarter has been absolutely chucked full with house activities. Hardly a week end passed without at least one house function. The first week end we held our Annual Spring Formal Dinner Dance in the romantic setting of the Seattle Golf and Country Club. The dance, under the suptrvision of Bud Cornish, was a terrific success, an evening never to be forgotten.

The following week end, we lost one of our boys; Bill Lampert married Dorothy Good. The reception was held in the chapter house.

On April 15 we held a Victory Dance celebrating Mac's election to the student body presidency. The house was decorated with campaign signs. April 29 the pledge class sponsored a fireside called "Hill Billy Hoe Down."

Carnival; a big job, we found out. Friday, May 12, we had an exchange with Alpha Omicron Pi, and Saturday, May 13, we held our Founders' Day celebration with a big banquet, speeches, and bull sessions.

The following week end quite a few of the members attended the Ice Follies, and afterwards went out to John and Lita Zawalnicki's new home for a housewarming party. Lita has been our much appreciated cook during the past year.

Initiation took up all of Saturday, May 27 . New actives are Benjamin Hammans, Wenatchee; Jack Otto Feil, Wenatchee; Dwayne Herman Payne, Spring Valley, Minnesota; James G. McKellar, Victoria, British Columbia; Donald Turnbow, Turlock, California; and Charles A. Jardine, Forest Hills, New York. This leaves us with a pledge class of one man: Darrel Davis of Puyallup, who pledged in April.

In spite of all the fraternity activities, two of our members, roommates incidentally, have found time to become engaged.

Russell Segersten to Miss Martha Fosnick of Enumclaw, and James McKellar to Miss Jill McColl of Victoria, British Columbia.

Russell plans a December wedding and Jim plans to get married next April.

And Spring came to Wyoming! With it came the Interfraternity Scholarship Cup for the second year in succession. Our average was 2.2382. One more leg to go and the dish is ours for keeps. .

Marc Colvin, Gordon James, and Don Overy gave us free rounds of good cigars.

They all seem to have lost their pins somewhere along the line. Congratulations go to these lucky men.

Along with the Spring Quarter came also our first annual Spring Formal. This is our first venture of this line and was, we think, a success. The dance, which was held on May 12, 1950, had a good turn-out.

The decorations centered around a large, spot-lighted, fraternity crest; thanks to

George Inkster, Gordon James, and Cliff Jacobs.

Election of officers was held on April 3, 1950. Marc Colvin now heads our chapter as Venerable Dean. The other officers are Roland Hart, Senior Dean; Marco Labudovich, Junior Dean; James Hunter, Senior Steward, and Robert Burnett, Secretary. We wish to congratulate our past officers for a job well done.

The quarter netted us one pledge. But the quantity is more than made up in quality in Bruce Massey from Tensleep.

We held initiation on April 16, 1950 for Gordon James, Dix, Nebraska; Paul Joslin, Eden; and Nick Panopolous, Cheyenne.

We had a good showing in honoraries this year. Phil Wood, Carl Nelson, Clarence Mercer, and James Pikl were elected to Phi Kappa Phi. Phi Epsilon Phi now claims among its members: Gordon James, Paul Joslin and Arthur Rue. Iron Skull members are Bill Gilbert and Jack Cooper. Wayne Holaway was elected to Alpha Epsilon Delta. Bob Vaughan swiped an honor book for Business Administration at the annual Honors Assembly. This ends another year of studies.

Roy has not announced his program for the next year but it is expected that the organization will continue to be of useful service to the university and to the member groups. Congratulations, Roy!

Merrill W. Haas, Michigan, '32, has returned to the United States after fifteen years in Venezuela where he was chief geologist for Creole Petroleum Corporation, the largest producing oil company today. He is now employed by Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) as an assistant to the chief geologist, and has his office at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York City.

With his wife and two children he is living at 755 Bronx River Road, Bronxville, New York.

IOWA-Under the guidance of Don Bengard, about twenty-two men have been pledged and are now seeking living quarters for next year. A good group of alumni and faculty men from the old Iowa Chapter are behind this colony so it should expand rapidly in the fall.

BRADLEY-In this rapidly expanding university a group of fifteen men from the local Square and Compass Club have indicated that they want to form an Acacia chapter. The university president has indicated his enthusiastic approval and George Magenheimer, Northwestern alumnus and prominent newspaperman of Peoria, is organizing the alumni of the area and serving as adviser. Many alumni of the Illinois Chapter reside hereabouts and should be valuable backers of the colony.
