As We See It: It was our pleasure to attend the Regional Conference in Boulder, Colorado, last Labor Day weekend. Up to that time we had been inclined to take with a grain of salt some of George Croyle's bragging about "his" chapters-so we decided to see for ourselves. Well, he wasn't overdoing it at all! Never have we seen such a group of men with the enthusiasm for Acacia and the determination to learn better chapter management that those boys had at that meeting. And our hat is off to the Colorado Acacians for the fine organizational job; everyone knew just what to do and when. Even the wives and mothers were in on the act -the editor's newly-acquired betterhalf reported that there was never a dull moment for the numerous wives who accompanied their husbands to the Conference. If this meeting was any criterion, we think all of the delegates will give a rousing vote of confidence to our Regional Conferences.

* * * Again we want to urge the chapters to join in the fine tradition which has been started by several of them: Christmas parties for the underprivileged children of their communities.

To our way of thinking, this is a fine way to demonstrate that our motto, "Human Service" can and does mean something to the Acacia Chapters. As might be expected, the brothers get as big a "kick" from such a party as the kids for whom it is given. So let's make this an All-Acacia tradition by providing for a flock of kids the kind of a Christmas they've never had but which most of us have always enjoyed.

* * * We are indeed grateful to Masonic Tidings magazine for the several pages of its Fall Issue which are devoted to the Acacia Fraternity. The article is well-illustrated with pictures of several of our chapters' houses, and others showing the interests and activities of the Fraternity. The accompanying article explains something of the background of Acacia and goes on to describe the modern college fraternity, the things for which it stands, and how it operates. A list of Acacia chapters is also included.

At a time when some organizations and publications are heaping abuse on the American College Fraternity System, we are indeed pleased to see the treatment given, not only to Acacia but to the fraternity system generally, by this magazine.

Officers Learned Leadership at Four Conferences Held at Boulder, Corvallis, Champaign, and Philadelphia THE first two week-ends in Septem1 her found the officers of the Acacia chapters and colonies attending classes- classes on chapter leadership and operations. As has become the established custom the alternate y ears from the Conclav'es have seen the chapters' officers assemble in four r egions to discuss their problems, learn how to organize and direct all phases of the fraternity program, and just get better acquainted with the members of the other chapters in neighboring universities.

Labor Day week-end found the MidWestern chapters assembled at the home of the Illinois Chapter while the Western chapters were gathered at the foot of the Rockies in the Colorado Chapter's house. The following weekend was the signal for the chapters along the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts to meet, the former in the home of the Franklin Chapter and the latter at the Oregon State Chapter house.

Reports from all of these meetings testify that they are of great benefit tÂŤ? the chapters' officers and advisers and to the men of the colonies which are just organizing and hope to become Acacia chapters. While the latter perhaps profit the most from these meetings, no one will deny that even the finest chapters get a lot of ideas and plans from these organized sessions.

At each of the Conferences one or more members of the National Council were present to augment the Traveling Secretaries who were in charge of the training sessions. Each of the host chapters had the arrangements well organized which was well since the amount of material covered required that the delegates be present and accounted for with a minimum of friction.

Reports from the Conferences are as follows : Western Delegates from twelve chapters and colonies of Acacia Fraternity were in Boulder September 1-3 for the regional conference at the Colorado Chapter house. Chapters represented were Denver University, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma A . & M. , Wyoming, Texas, Iowa State, Arkansas, Colorado A. & M. and Color ado.

The conference featured a reception, stag steak fry, and banquet for the delegates, with women at the conference entertained by the Boulder and Denver auxiliaries at a tea, brunch, and picnic.

Bob Bergheim headed Colorado's general committee for the event, with Mother (Mrs. C. E.) Bocock, official hostess. Venerable Dean Jim Hutchinson, chairman of the steak fry, Ken Hook, Banquet; Jack Roemer, sleeping facilities; Bob Frost, finance; Deane Carter, reception; and Bud Holman, general facilities.

Thursday evening, September 1, a reception by the Denver Acacia Auxiliary was held in the house for delegates and guests, with 125 attending.

One-hundred male delegates drove to the top of Flagstaff Mountain on Friday evening for the steak fry in the mountains. The closing banquet at Crags Lodge in Estes Park Saturday night featured the presentation of a brief-case and pen-and-pencil set to Traveling Secretary George Croyle by all attending chapters in appreciation of his services to Acacia Fraternity in this region.

opened on Friday the 9th by Rex Beeman, OSC Venerable Dean in his welcoming address to the assembled delegates. Short lectures followed by discussions were the order of the day for the ensuing two days.

The Conference was terminated by a banquet at the Corvallis hotel the evening of the lOth; 60 delegates and Acacia guests were present to hear National Secretary Chris Gabriel render a few appropriate remarks as to Acacia's progress to date and the ways and means by which the fraternity could better publicize itself. Guest speaker for the evening was D ean Dan W. Poling, D ean of Men at Oregon State. Dean Poling pointed out that Acacia with its Masonic background should take a more active part in the fight to make all fraternities better.

D ean Poling went on to say that a more mature outlook is. and will be necessary in the future if the fraternity system is to withstand the rigors of outside influences detrimental to the present progress of all fraternities.

The Conference itself was instrumental in improving the relationship of the Pacific Chapters. The talks and discussions enabled each individual chapter to take home a more complete picture of methods and procedures.

John Hazelwood of the Washington State Chapter presented an excellent talk on Rushing and Pledging procedure. D on Blomburg of Southern California continued with Pledge Education by giving a detailed analysis.

Bert Hathaway's session on the TRIAD stimulated a constructive discussion period. Among the items covered the last day was the formulation of ideas pertinent to a national Acacia theme dance. The advantages of this type of social function are twofold: 1) it will promote publicity for the fraternity and 2) it will build interchapter relations, and provide a method for stand(Ccm.tinued on page 23)

An Active Looks at Activities

by Claude R. Sowle III ORTY-FIVE years of hard work and tireless planning have given a rich heritage to the wearers of the j eweled pin. With that heritage goes great responsibility. Each of us owes a debt to the Acacia Fraternity-a debt based upon the fraternity's primary admonition to all members that, "Unto whom much is given, of him shall much be required. " A man can serve his fraternity in many ways. He can make good grades and enhance his fraternity's scholastic standing. He can participate to the fullest in his fraternity's parties and thus help its social position. He can extend a real hand of friendship to all of his brothers and thereby help make the word fraternitly take on real meaning. However, the fraternity man's real decision as to how he will serve his organization revolves around one basic question: "Shall I serve my fraternity through my work within the chapter or shall I do my part by participating in extracurricular activities outside the chapter?" Some men find it possible to achieve distinction both within and without the chapter house, but they are rare. Nearly every fraternity man, if he is to¡ devote himself to the service of his fraternity, must decide in which of the two areas he will place his emphasis.

At the outset, not too many problems face the man who decides to serve the house from within. There are valuable written and verbal sources to help him get a start. He may turn to the incumbent chapter

Although still an undergraduate, Claude Sowle can write with authority on college activities, for his college record reads like a directory of student enterprises. "Red" is currently serving his second term as Venerable Dean of the Northwestern Chapter, of which he previously had been Rushing Chairman. In his junior year he becam e Class President, Business Manager of the Syllabus, Northwestern' s yearbook, and Co-chairman of the Student Service Fund, which is the campus version of the Community Chest. Now a senior, Red is the Business Manager of the Daily Northwestern, serves on the InterFraternity Council, and is a member of the senior men's honorary. He hails from Sprin gfield, Illinois, and plans to enter law school; first , however, he will spend two years in the Navy as a reserve officer since he is a member of the R. 0 . T. C. u nit.

officers or to the information disseminated by the national fraternity and the regional training schools. The local pledge manual and a copy of Pythagoras are always nearby. In short, help of all kinds should be readily available.

However, the man who faces the whole campus with an urge to be of service faces a somewhat different problem-a problem which will be discussed in the remainder of this article.

Usually no printed material is available to tell him where to begin. Few individuals stop to give him a helping hand. In fact, he is usually faced by four rather difficult problems which he, and he alone, is able to solve. First, he must decide in his own mind that extracurricular activities will be of value to him and that he has a place in them. Next, he must survey the field of activities open to him and decide which he wishes to enter. Third, he must carefully plan just how he will break into the field of activity he has decided upon. Lastly, and this is extremely important, he must decide just how he will go about attaining success in the field of activity he has chosen.

A closer look at this problem and a step-by-step discussion of the process will be of some value.

To succeed in extracurricular activities, a man must be firmly convinced of their value. He must feel that the all-important personality traits

of dependability, judgment, and perseverence are being cultivated by his activity participation. He must feel that, through his activities, he is aiding two things close to his heart-his school and his fraternity. And he must realize, practically speaking, that he is getting some of the best preparation and training available for the career which is to follow his schooling.

Once convinced of the value of activities participation, he must then choose his activity. In most schools a host of choices are available. The journalist usually has any one of three or four publications from which to make his choice. The commerce student has an almost unending number of business managerships toward which to work. University theaters, radio playshops, and the like stand ready to accept the speech student. And so, on and on goes the list. However, the prospective activities man should not close his eyes and blindly pick just any activity on the list. He should give serious thought to his choice. He should consider where his interest lies, where he will get the most valuable training, and where he feels he will have the best chance of success.

Once he has chosen his activity, he next faces the problem of how to break into the field of his choice. Three things might be remembered when meeting this problem. First, take great pains in preparing your petition for a position. Your petition usually precedes you and forms the basis of the impression which you will make, so make it good. Make sure that your petition is neat in appearance and that a clear and honest answer has been supplied for every question asked. Attach a brief explanatory letter to the petition, explaining why you are interested in becoming a part of the activity and pledging yourself to carry out any job assigned to the best of your ability. If called in for an interview, and this is the procedure in most activities, strive to make the best impression possible. Plan what you are going to say before going into t h e interview. Even more important, have something to contribute in the way of ideas. Show that you have given thought to the tasks and responsibilities of the position which you are seeking and make it clear that you have ideas about how the (C on t¡tnue d

Christopher K. Gabriel Appointed National Secretary of Acacia Christopher K. Gabriel (Chris), Oregon State, '26, has been appointed to fill the office of National Secretary left vacant by the recent death of Bancroft A. Nelson. The Fraternity is fortunate in obtaining the services of this staunch Acacian, for he brings great ability to this position as well as a strong faith in and loyalty to the principles of Acacia. We are grateful that he has found it possible to shoulder the responsibilities of this office.

During his years at Oregon State College, Chris was active in the chapter, serving as House President and in other capacities, and took part also in various campus activities and organizations. He completed his course in Civil Engineering at Oregon State in the class of 1928.

Since his graduation from school he has been associated with the Gabriel Fabrication & Erection Company, and has been President of this organization since 1940. This company fabricates all types of plate and structural steel work, and manufactures high pressure steel boilers and equipment for the construction, logging, and cannery industries. Chris is a registered professional civil engineer.

He is a member of a number of civic organizations, several clubs, and various business and technical associations. He is also on the Board of Regents of an old and exclusive girls' school. His main hobby is stamp collecting. He is married, lives in Portland, Oregon, and has one son (recent-

ly married) who lives in Portland.

Brother Gabriel was the mainspring in the reactivation of the Oregon State Chapter and gave unstintingly of his time and efforts in rounding up the alumni, organizing the active group, and making arrangements for the purchase of their chapter house. He is always ready to work for Acacia because he believes firmly in the American College Fraternity system as one of our truly democratic institutions which contributes much to our American way of life. Welcome to our official family, Chris.

Azalia P . Oberg the urn of 9 000 has been recently set up as a loan-f~d to aid worthy upperclass student to complete their college educations according to Ray C. Thomas, National Counsellor of Acacia who has been asked to administer the fund .

Established as the "Azalia P. Oberg Foundation, Inc. " the fund will provide up to $250 to juniors and senior at the relatively low interest rate of 5 per cent annually, which is to be paid at the rate of 2lh per cent each six months. The loans are to be repaid after completion of school and can be paid in monthly installments at a time that is convenient to the students who make them.

Acacians who wish to utilize this fund should make application to Ray C. Thomas, 504 Broadway, Room 1016, Gary, Indiana. Applications should include the recommendation of the Chapter Advisor and the House Treasurer that the loan is necessary and that it is their opinion that the loan will be repaid. The note should be signed by the student applicant and by his parents, if living; otherwise by some relative.

It is emphasized that this fund is not a money-making plan since the foundation has been incorporated as a nonprofit organization and no money can be obtained from it by Mrs. Oberg or Mr. Thomas as treasurer. However, the loans are not gifts and it is expected that they will be repaid.

It is anticipated that Mrs. Oberg's generosity will enable many students to complete educational careers that might otherwise be interrupted for financial reasons. As the number of Gis enrolled in college decreases, more and more students will find that help from such a fund will prove to be a life-saver and permit them to complete their educational careers in the minimum time. Mrs. Oberg is to be congratulated for her public-spirited gesture.

Penn State Celebrates Fortieth Anniversary E very pledge at S tate College h as repeated those memorable words, "Penn State Chapter of Acacia was founded on June 9, 1909." Thus June of this year marked the fortieth year since the founding of that chapter; this event was duly celebrated by nearly a hundred members of the chapter, old and young, who gathered at the chapter house on June 3, the day before the college's Alumni Day. Registration began in the afternoon so that the alumni could spend the remaining time discussing the "good old days." A turkey dinner with all the trimmings was on hand at sixthirty , for the ninety-four who were present. Dr. William S. Dye, Jr., a past National President of Acacia, served as toastmaster and gave a short talk recalling the history of the chapter.

Following the dinner recognition pins were p resented to the Charter Members who were present, including Dr. Dye, N. B . Higgens, Clarence H. Pennel, H . J . Madden, E. B. Phillips, and J. Warren Fortenbaugh. Pins were also given to Ted Keller, President of Square and Compass and father of two active members, and to Dave Sims, who had been elected the chapter's outstanding senior.

Following the dinner the actives relflOved the tables for dancing, for which Jack Huber and his orchestra supplied the music. The alumni either enjoyed dancing or, if not spry enough for that, continued the bull session started in the afternoon.

for G race Line and was in South America at the time. F. H . Beyer, another of the charter members, .wrote from Spokane, Washington, where he is active with Washington State Chapter. Tom Wiggins wrote that he is now an instructor in physics and working on his master's at George Washington University. Some of those who came

from a distance included Ben Wise from Michigan, Al Diem from Bridgeport, and Homer Busher and Richard Morgan from Washington, D. C. Since life begins at forty, the future of the Penn State Chapter should be secure, especially if her future alumni are as fine as those of the past.

Fraternity Mourns Loss of Ban Nelsott The entire Acacia Fraternity wa profoundly shocked last may 14 to Jearn of the untimely death of Bancroft A. "Ban" Nelson who had taken up the duties of National Seer tary only a few months before. Ban was one of the most dynamic officials the Fraternity had ever had and his death was a blow to many plans which had been formulated for the Fraternity in California.

He was born in Eureka, California in 1918, and receiv d his chooling in Pasadena, graduating from its junior college in 1938. Syracuse U. Awards Medal to Harry E. Weston "For excellence in the advancement of industrial education," Harry E. Weston, Syracuse, '21, was awarded the George Arents Pioneer Medal by Syracuse University at its annual alumni reunion show on June 4.

The unusual honor, established in 1939 in tribute to graduates active in alumni affairs and distinguished in their vocations, was presented to the Syracuse Acacian for his advocacy of greater use of college-trained personnel, better training methods for pulp and paper mill workers, and improved safety practices in the country's pulp and paper industry. His campaign for these and other goals was carried on

by Weston as editor for 15 years of "Paper Industry," technical trade journal published in Chicago.

Native of Hinckley, N. Y. , Weston entered the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University in 1915. During the war he interrupted his studies, returning to graduate with the class of '21. The semester before graduating he was made instructor in forest chemistry at the College of Forestry, where he remained as instructor and professor of pulp and paper manufacture until 1926. After several months as a sales engineer in Chicago, he went to "Paper Industry" as advertising manager (1927-32), editor (1932-39) , and then editorial director of the combined "Paper Industry and Paper World" (1939-47). Weston carried to his job as trade journalist and editor the viewpoint and experience of the educator that he had been at the College of Forestry, where he was one of the first students and first instructors of the first pulp and paper

the World Over manufacture course to be offered by any U. S. forestry school. "Whenever I persuaded an industry man to share his knowledge and observations with his fellows through the medium of my publication, I regarded him as an 'exchange professor.' The same man is a student when he picks up other issues of the magazine," Weston said.

He is continuing his educationminded efforts on behalf of progress by the pulp and paper industry in the position which he took in February 1948. He is now associate secretarytreasurer of American Pulp and Paper Mill Superintendents Association Inc., Chicago. His home is at 150 East Morningside Avenue, Lombard, Ill.

Shannons Give Memorial to K. U. in Memory of Son A bell memorial in the carillon at the University of Kansas has been presented by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shannon and family in memory of their son Donald who was killed in an airplane crash while in military service. Donald had hoped to attend Kansas and play halfback on the football team as did his dad, who was initiated into the Kansas Chapter in 1925. The Shannon family recently moved to Lawrence from Detroit, Michigan.

Gary Heads Athletics at Western Michigan The appointment of Mitchell J .

(Mike) Gary, Minnesota, '25, as Director of Athletics at Western Michigan College was announced by President Paul V . Sangren.

Since his return from the Navy three years ago, Gary had been assistant athletic director. He was a star tackle for three seasons at Minnesota, from which he went to Western Michigan, in Kalamazoo, in 1928.

Lloyd V. Berkner Is Named Special Assistant to the Secretary of State A scientist known for his achievements in the fields of physics and electronics, Lloyd V. Berkner, Minnesota, '26, was appointed in March 1949 by Secretary of State Acheson to the post of special assistant to the Secretary, in charge of the military assistance program proposed to strengthen Western Europe. Brother Berkner is on the staff of the department of terrestial magnetism at the Camegie Institution of Washington, where he has served since 1933. The executive secretary of the Joint Research and Development Board in 1946, Berkner also was head of the special committee appointed at the request of the Secretary of Defense to direct a study that led to the establishment of the W eapons System Evaluation Group.

Berkner's youth was spent in the thriving towns of Perth, North Dakota, and Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, where he displayed his interest in things scientific by becoming an amateur radio operator in the early twenties before departing for the University of Minnesota. There he majored in electrical engineering, engineered the university radio station, made several honoraries, and became an Acacian.

Almost from the time of his graduation to the present day he has devoted his career to public service. At one time or another he has been with the Airways Division of the Bureau of Lighthouses, the National Bureau of Standards, the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, and finally the Carnegie Institution for which he has traveled the world over. During the recent war he rose to the rank of Captain in the Navy where he directed the radar section of the Bureau of Aeronautics and saw active service aboard the carrier, U. S. S. Enterprise.

Berkner's contributions to science have brought him many honors and awards including the science award of the Washington Academy of Sciences in 1941 for his work in ionosphere research. For " exceptionally meritorious service" from 1941 to 1945 Captain Berkner was awarded the Legion of Merit, and was presented with the Commendation Ribbon of the Secretary of the Navy "for outstanding achievement in a specialized field .... " He is a member of many organizations of a scientific nature and is commanding officer of the United States Naval Reserve electronics staff, Bureau of Aeronautics.

In the course of the past twenty-five years Lloyd Berkner has contributed about seventy-five articles to scien-

tific and other periodicals and has written three books on ionospheric research. He is married, and has two daughters, lives in Bethesda, Maryland, and, believe it or not, finds time for relaxation with golf, gardening, photography, and in his metal and woodworking shop!-Current Biography.

Los Angeles Alumni Pay Honor to Belford Cruse At the regular monthly meeting of the Southern Califomia Acacia Alumni Association at the Gaylord Hotel, Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, California, on June 28, Dr. Belford M. Cruse, Harvard, '17, was paid recognition by the brethren for the honors recently bestowed upon him by Sigma Tau Sigma, National Social Science Honorary Society.

Dr . Cruse was recently presented a special award for his ceaseless promotion of Americanism in the educational systems, and for his open aggressiveness in combating Communistic and Un-American factions. Brother Cruse, now head of the department of Social Sciences at Los Angeles City College where he supervises more than forty social science instructors, accepted the gold engraved emblem at a recent gathering of the Honorary body. P rior to the presentation Dr. Cruse addressed the group on the subject of "Materialism in a Changing World."

This particular speech has been acclaimed in wide circles as being one of the most subtle, yet pointed, attacks on those opposing the American way of life. Unique in his manner of personalizing his message, Dr. Cruse

centers his theme on his own small hometown of Dorchester, New Jersey.

He continues to praise American industrial power, the right for labor to bargain collectively, the right to own stock in a company, and the mutual benefits derived from labor and capital working together.

As an illustrative point, Dr. Cruse said, "The American Telephone and Telegraph Company has over 700,000 owners, over one-half of whom are women-many of them old womenthe nasty capitalists .. .. The big corporation in the final analysis, with exceptions, of course, are a lot of little people combining their small savings into a single large fund for production purposes.

"We are a nation of pampered, spoiled materialists. Double your paycheck and you will rejoice .. . you will either increase your consumption or your savings. You will not increase your contributions proportionately even for the most worthy cause."

Equality of distribution and its resulting chaos with its death blow to individual ambition and enterprise were evident throughout his talk.

Kenneth Hollingsworth, president of the local Acacia Association, expressed the good wishes of the Fratemity to Dr. Cruse upon the conclusion of his address, repeated at the banquet meeting by many requests.

Chicagoland Alumni Association Approximately twenty-five brothers tumed out for the first meeting of the Chicagoland Alumni Association which was held at its customary meeting place: the Electric Club in the Civic Opera Building. The meeting was devoted to planning for the year and to a discussion of possible objectives for the group. It was agreed that the meetings would, this year, be held on the third Monday of each month since this seemed to be more suitable for the majority of the members. Ralph Hoffman is serving as president of the group this year, with Sam Walker as secretary. All Acacians in the Chicago area are cordially invited to attend and an especial welcome is extended to any brothers who may be in town on the meeting nights. No reservations are necessary; dinner is served at 6:30.

Cincinnati Alumni Association The Cincinnati Alumni Association was most hospitably entertained in August at the home of its president, Harry Gibbons, Ohio State, '17. The group was served with a buffet luncheon in the terraced gardens of the Gibbons home. Plans were made for the

"Songs of Acacia" to Be Republished As an encouragement to the chapters in their programs of organized singing, the National Council has author ized the official songbook, "Songs of Acacia" to be r evised and republished. Mar ion Huber, who also serves as National Tr easurer, has volunteered to take charge of this project and has alr eady done much of the work necessary to provide the chapters with an up-to-date collection of songs which have proven, through local chapter use, to be the best in t he Fraternity.

The last edition of the Acacia songbook was published in 1927 and included many n umbers which ar e still

popular in many chapters. Since that time, h owever, ma ny new songs have appeared in th e individual chapters and regions ; the pur p ose of t his new edition is to present them in a for m useful to all of th e chapters. S om e of th em vnll b e r e-arranged b y musical exper ts wh o are fa miliar with the ranges of college-men 's voices.

Covering the Cover Featured on the cover of this issue is the English Manor styled home of the Illinois Chapter at Champaign.

Founded in 1906, this chapter has always been one of the strongest in the Fraternity.

For the fir st eight years of its life, the Illinois Chapter was located on Green Street, in the heart of "Fraternity Row." In 1914, an Old English country house with gables and a highpitched roof was built at 501 East Daniel Street, just two blocks south of the old location. This proved ideal in view of the southward growth of the University of Illinois campus, and the corresponding shift of fraternity locations. The house is considered by authorities on architecture to be one of the finest examples of its kind of architectural design existent in t his country.

The house was designed to accommodate thir ty-two men. The main floor provides spacious living rooms, a librar y, a recreation porch, and a guest r oom. The dining room and kitchen ar e located in the basement. In 1946 the Illinois Chapter purchased an annex located next door to the fraternity house. It was completely remodeled, redecorated, and refurnished to make living quarter s for twenty-nine men.

A recent University survey showed the Acacia study rooms to be the best on campus.

One of the recent Chapter acquisitions has been an asphalt volleyball court. Facilities for basketball have been provided and it is hoped that dances may also be held on the court during warm seasons. Along vnth this project, the entire Chapter grounds were landscaped for the first time in many years.

Traditional with the Illinois Chapte is the annual friendly "feud" wi neighboring Alpha Kappa Lambda.

The outstanding social functions consist of a pledge dance, winter and spring formal, Feud Dance, Dad's Day party, and Mother's Day weekend.

Illinois Acacia has always maintained high scholastic standards. The Illinois Chapter has consistently ranked in the upper third in scholastic rating on the Illinois campus. In campus activities Illinois Acacia takes a leading part in politics, has men competing in varsity athletics, and members in all major activities.

Modern Rustlers A pair of bronco busters in 10-gallon hats and leather chaps were recently roamin' the wilds of Ohio in their 1933 ear-by virtue of the hospitality of three Acacia actives.

It seems that the wranglers got themselves . invited to put up for the night with three Acacians from Columbus. After their departure the next morning in their 12-cylinder buckboard their bunkmates found that the self-styled rodeo performers had rustled $50 from their wallets. Doubtless these men could use some advice from their brothers of the Texas Chapter on how to handle varmints such as these.

Foster Painting Unveiled Last April a portrait of George 0.

Foster, Kansas, '09, was unveiled by his widow in Foster Hall, a women's dormitory on the Kansas compus.

Brother Foster died in 1942, six months after his retirement from the University which he served for 52 years, 44 of which were as registrar.

Joins Baking Firm Fred V. Robinson, Northwestern, '25, manager for many years of the Raymond-Whitcomb office in Chicago, has gone to Dayton, Ohio, to become vice-president of the Bluebird Baking Company, operators of a chain of wholesale bakeries, a flour mill, a fruit processing plant, and two orchards.

Granquist With Shell Harold Granquist, Jr., CaLifornia, '44, accepted a position vnth the Shell Chemical Company upon his graduation from college. One of his first projects was to assist a crew of chemists to increase the production of glycerine from petroleum at the firm's Houston, Texas, plant.

• Doings zn the Chapters

California As your California Correspondent settles down with a fresh pack of smokes to look at the start of the fall se~ester, several new and interesting things come to light. The new "things" are mostly pledges, and a newly decorated set of game rooms in our chapter house basement.

The pledges are thirteen in number.

Unlucky, 'tis said-unlucky for them. The house was fortunate in getting such a large and active class this year. They are from all over California ranging from The South-Los Angeles, affectionately known as the "armpit of the nation" to Sacramento, in The North, our glorious, productive, and beautiful state Capitol.

They are: Chuck Poppe, pledge president, Marvin Schulman, Walt Tingley, and Dave Ellis, all from Sacramento, Harold Kouns from Walnut Creek, Doug Wolcott from Ross, Dick Olsen from Kingsburg, Bob Tanem from Willits, ·Bob Reynolds from Berkeley, Ed Owre from North Sacramento, Jack Hartman from Oakland, and last but not least, Al Prevost and Bob Erlich from Antioch. The boys have a lot of spirit, and the semester promises to be both entertaining and exciting for pledges and brothers alike.

As a result of our recent initiation, we have four new brothers. They are Tom Remington, Elliot Brenner, Bill Mason, and Murman Vedder.

Our social program for this semester seems adequate in every respect with several exchanges with sororities being planned, a combination hayride and beach party on October 8, a Boardwalk party on October 15, the semi-annual pledge formal in November, plus various other house parties, open houses, get-togethers, banquets, and beer busts. Let's hope that we'll have time to maintain our scholastic standing which, incidently has been top of 48 California fraternities and mens' living groups for the past two years. By the way, the California Chapter is joining with the other West Coast Chapters in giving a dance which will carry out a single theme and will be established as a West Coast yearly tradition. Appropriately, the theme will have Egyptian connotations. Remember-you read it here first!

Our intramural teams have been practicing since the beginning of the semester, and it looks as if we'll be right on top in all sports when the final gun sounds.

Since the addition of a pin ball machine in our game rooms, we have been seriously thinking of requesting that the athletic department add the sport of pinballing to its list of intramural sports.

There isn't a man in the house who doesn't think he could walk off champ right now.

At this point, we find it necessary to add to our list of obituaries-sad, but true, there are several men in the house

who are going to take-worse yet, already have taken-the final, fatal step into matrimony. Bob Skakel was the first to go.

He, strangely, seemed happy as he was married last September 4. Bill Mason will be married in December, and Bill Arsenault will follow soon. God rest their souls.

Lanta, our pedigreed Great Dane, has been in various embarrassing situations lately. His most recent faux pas was casually tasting the hand of a member of the Berkeley constabulary. It seems the cop wanted Lanta to go home, and Lanta didn't see it that way since his lovelifea female collie-had amorous ideas, and Lanta was serenading her at two in the morning. For that, the "peace" officer booked Lanta for resisting arrest and he (Lanta) spent 10 days in the pound.

At the end of last semester, we elected a new set of officers to bear the brunt of gripes and squawks. The new and competent Venerable Dean is Robert Frye.

Senior Dean, Boyd Long; Junior Dean, Dick Hoffelt; Corresponding Secretary, Dave Fischer; Recording Secretary, John Stumbos; and House Manager, Bob Mallory. The boys look as if they'll be doing a fine job this semester. We all pray that they'll still be among the living at the end of the season.

Oops, we almost forgot to mention our renovated basement. It was a long, hard pull, but we finally completed our game rooms. Newly plastered (the game rooms -that is) and painted, they will serve as pool room, ping-pong room, and in vari_ous capacities for house parties.

Our deepest appreciation goes to our Mother's Club who recently furnished our dining room with new and attractive drapes. The Mother's Club is newly organized, but they have helped us immeasurably already. Thanks moms.

Say, has anyone seen Croyle? He hasn't been around lately, and we miss his happy-go-lucky smiling puss. The poor boy must be lost back there in the East.

Don't be rough on him:_he's so delicate, you know.

This semester has also seen the start of an organized singing group for the house under the guidance of swooncrooner Dickie De Forrest. Before long, we'll be out entertaining sorority row with our strong voices, no doubt making the girls swoon right out of their windows and into our arms. No doubt.

Cincinnati The Cincinnati Chapter was still bustling with rushing activities when this article was being inked. The deadline for pledging had been set for October 15, but we already had pledged thirteen men two weeks preceding that date. Just be-

fore the gun sounded to begin pledging at 8:00 a. m., September 23, that black button with the gold triangle suddenly appeared in the lapels of these men: Burton Jones, Rochester, Indiana; Robert Karns, Westwood, New Jersey ; Dan Koenigstein, Bowling Green, Kentucky ; Robert Rupert, Ravenna, Ohio ; and Robert Newman, of Portsmouth, Ohio. Then the ball began to roll-picking up men and momentum. Many of the Active Chapter arrived in town a week early to brighten up the house with redecorations and general house cleaning, besides some rushing preparations. Our living room has been enhanced considerably with the addition of colorful new drapes, a beautiful carpet, and-I'm not fooling-a television set. It looks like most of the housemen will be more familiar with who pitched the World Series than with who compiled the "Theory of Relativity."

Well, if the beginning of this scholastic year is any indication, the Cincinnati Chapter is in for a hot social year. Already we've had three post-football game parties, in addition to many buffet luncheons and opeh houses. Every one of us is looking forward to the barn dance which is to be held around Halloween time.

Right now, the pledges and actives are wracking their brains on the type of float that we are going to build for the Homecoming Game Parade. Big plans are in store for the alums who venture back to Nippert Stadium for the U. C. vs. Mississippi State game on October 14.

The sporting picture has not come into focus yet; however, our scatbacks and linemen have ventured out for a few practices. Outside of a few strains and pains, no one has incurred serious disablements. · On July 7, our Cincinnati Chapter Roll was enlarged by three men when Keith Eisler, John Green, and Roland Stout were initiated.

William Fox can no longer say, "I think I'll go to the stag tonight, fellows." It's more like, "I'll ask Mary whether I can go to the stag tonight, fellows." As of July 31, Bill has a lovely bride-the for mer Mary Lou Gyourko.

The fraternal spirit of all the men from our chapter who attended the training program at illinois has risen to awe-inspiring heights. Each one of them claimed that it was the finest Labor Day Weekend he had ever spent.

Colorado After dismantling beds and re-cleaning the chapter house after Acacia Regional Conference at the chapter, the members had a brief respite oefore rush week at the chapter started September 15. The four-day rushing program ended with seventeen pledges.

Amid a blare of horns and spotlights, the 17 men received the black and gold pledge pin. They are Steve Achtenhagen, Bob Colwell and Lloyd Craft, Denver; Kenneth Kleinholz, John C. Lunsford, Robert Musil, Bruce Poyer, and Roger Heath, Boulder; George Barry and Donald Stockman, Williston, North Dakota; Charles Amen, Loveland, Colo.; Robert Brickel, Rapid City, South Dakota; Carl Duncan, Avondale, Colo.; Bobby Dixon, Parsons, Kansas; Gerald K. Dungan II, Safford, Ariz.; Curtis Gentry, Lamar, Colorado ; James Dale Maxwell, Sterling, Colo.; Kenneth Skinner, Jr., Wheatridge, Colo.

Lunsford, son of Col. John Lunsford, National Editor of Acacia, was elected president of the pledge class, with Skinner, vice-president and Dixon, secretarytreasurer.

At another election, Deane Carter of Sharon Springs, Kansas, was elected Senior Dean of Colorado Chapter to replace Tom Hughes, Denver, who is not in school this quarter.

The Colorado chapter house had its face lifted during spring and early fall.

After tile had been laid in the rec. room, and the grounds landscaped by Gene Keenan and Bob Gray, helped by the entire chapter, the house corporation took over, digging down and water-proofing basement walls, reshingling the roof and putting a new roof on the front.

Before regional, twenty members, led

by Bob Bergheim, painted the chapter room, rec. room and showers. Even friend George Croyle dipped his hands into the paint in the showers. Following the conference, new furniture and draperies were added with the aid of the Denver and Boulder Acacia Ladies' Auxiliaries, and chapter Dads. . The finishing touch was an elegant snack bar, skillfully built by Ken Hook, Tom Hutchinson, Jim Murray and Walt Page. The kitchen was repainted by Bob Frost, with Mother Bocock helping with her brush.

The Ladies Auxiliary has also contributed new initiation robes to the chapter which were first used during initiation October 9.

Colorado Chapter tied for third place in scholarship among twenty-two fraternities with an average of 1.49 for the past three-quarter period. The average dropped each quarter from a high of 1.52 fall quarter to 1.50 winter and 1.45 spring quarter. Greek men had a 1.33 average, with the all-men grades at 1.45.

Mother (Mrs. C. E.) Bocock began her eighth year of service to Colorado Chapter this year, after spending her summer at home in Hailey, Idaho. A friend of Acacians throughout the country, Mother

first came to the chapter in 1940, and, except for a short lapse during the war, has been with the chapter ever since.

On the romantic side, Brother Dick Bingham,. Boulder, pinned Anne Alexander, Theta, recently. George Nichols, De ward N eihans, LeRoy Graham, and Walt Clark were married during the summer.

Kansas Chapter boastfully challenged Colorado by putting a sheepskin on stake for the KU-Colorado game, which Colorado naturally won, 13-12. The real skin hasn't arrived yet, but we're patiently waiting. Oh, yes, our K-State skin had to be mailed back after a loss to that chapter's team during the fall.

Cornell With the vacancies of vacation and the rush of rushing pulling to a screeching halt, Cornell takes inventory with the following result: eight men lost, thirteen gained. Robert Sherman Mack of Jamaica, N. Y., and Harvey William Mertz of Bellerose, N. Y., left via the cap and gown route. Norman R. Neubauer, Robert A. Fowler, Scott M. DePalma, David S. Weeks, Robert B. Squires, and William Bunyan have taken a leave of absence for various reasons. To balance the ledger, thirteen men have befn pledged. In order to better instruct the neophytes who are in different age groups, upperclassmen, pledged in informal rushing last spring, are listed as "senior pledges," while those pledged during formal rushing this fall

are known as "freshman" pledges. Senior pledges include Doug Dodds, Thomas Hanzas, Hobart Abbey, Richard Graham, Lloyd Hayner; the new freshmen pledges are William Noonburg, Ira Youngdahl, James Brown, Douglas Mcllroy, Gerald May, Robert Vanderjock, Kenneth Lawrence, Norman Butts, and Ralph Brown.

The house powdered its face, applied lipstick, and even combed its hair this fall and only six months after a serious operation on its cloaca. The powder was in the form of white paint masterfully slopped on the stucco; the lipstick was a dark brown stain splashed on the trimming. The hair-combing episode consisted of major roof repairs, and the serious operation was a new bathroom complete with glass shower doors and a six-month supply of wet water.

On the hill, especially the upper campus, Acacia is really tossing its weight around. Chuck Emery, current Venerable Dean, just completed a term as head of Ag-Domecon, the governing body of upper campus. He, along with Bill Stalder, Doug Dodds, and Let Howard are members of Ho-Nun-De-Kah, Senior Ag. Honorary society. Doug, incidentally, and Joe "Hung Up" Miller are president and vice-president respectively of the Round Up Club, largest organization on campus.

of the few sophomores to see steady action on Cornell varsity nine.

Little boy Cupid pointed his bow at Cornell and raised havoc, scoring numerous hull's eyes on our actives. This summer Bill Stalder married Margaret Haller of Watertown, N. Y.; Bob Bergren has settled down with the former Joan Mungeer of Westchester, N. Y. (a Tri-Delt and Cornell Graduate of '47); Hal Bellinger, the "Texan," roped Helen Bohach of Ithaca, N. Y.; and Joe Herr has taken up housekeeping with the former Hazel Hallock, a Cornell A. 0 . Pi. A little less radical action, but tending in the same direction, Orrin Riley pinned Shirley St. Onge of Shrewsbury, Mass., adding a ring two months later. Chuck Emery finally broke down and bought Betty Suelz of Albany, N. Y., a diamond. Art Heuser became engaged to Shirley Tefft of Ithaca, N. Y., and Eleanor Seifert of Toledo, Ohio, was betrothed to Bob Strong. Les Bemont has added weight to the third finger, left hand, of Susie Lantos of Interlaken, N. Y. Paul Warner tacked his pin on the blouse of Jean Ogle of Ithaca, N.Y., and George Bassett surrendered his to Barbara Beyrent of Steelton, Pa. Total casualties-eleven.

The social season now depends on whether or not the football team is at home or away but a full calendar of activities has been planned for the fall term.

The intramural football season is now under way and Acacia has high hopes of defending its league title. The troops here at Cornell are looking forward to a big year in everything from athletics to averages, so here goes. Thanks for listening.

One of the highlights of the rushing program was a trip to a ranch in the mountains. The actives, with the aid of Brother Orner Green, umpire, subdued the rushees and pledges in a softball game, 14-12. Standout play of the day went to Fred Bonfils, who stopped a scorching grounder, wheeled and fired to the third baseman. But here Fred failed.

He forgot that he was the third baseman.

A campfire dinner and singing rounded out the afternoon and evening.

A new system of delayed rush week was started on the D . U. campus this year and at this writing formal pledging had not yet been held. However, a pledge class of around 15 is anticipated and this number may be larger by the end of the quarter. Four pledges are back and an initiation is planned this quarter to put them on the active register.

On the intramural scene the chapter has entered teams in bowling and touch football. Chances are good to better the third places we brought back in both sports last year.

Visitors to the chapter this fall have been Dr. Edmondson, Wyoming Chapter faculty adviser, and Keith Bennett of the University of Oklahoma Chapter. Both gave us many valuable tips on our new problem child, the house.

With school days once more upon us, even some of last year's grads have found it difficult to stay away from the halls of the Franklin Chapter. Most members of our house returned to school telling of varied and unusual recreations and occupations in which they were engaged during the summer.

Among our recent graduates, Bob Curry is helping the Baldwin Manufacturing Company with some of its accounting problems, while Leroy Neff hopes to break all sales records of the Borden Cheese Company. Dick Hartman has been employed by the Consumer Credit Department of the Provident Trust Company; Kenneth Nickle is taking gradu~te work at the University of Pennsylvama; Alex Scott is attending graduate school at Temple University; Bob Cornish is attending dental school at Temple University and Stevens Nemish is working for his Master's Degree in Educati_on at Pennsylvania State University.

Among the active m embers, Skip Eichner and Bill Wasson k ept the little tots busy as they held counseling jobs at summer camps. Brother Mike Keefe had the unique distinction of mining for gold in the Spokane Creek near Helena, Montana while Bill Halberstadt tackled the task' of converting a piano into a harpsicord, and Philip Young served as a missionary in the back hills of Kentu~ky.

"How many pounds of meat can fifteen guys eat?" "What happened to the bathtub that was in this room last night? " "Why did the housemanager go crazy? " These and many, many other questions just like them are being asked in the Denver Chapter as we take over operation of our newly-acquired house.

Problems are thick and fast and fellows that "just never did think they were domestically inclined" find themselves with an apron around their necks and a determined cook showing them the way to the sink.

But all in all it is a wonderful feeling to be in a house of our own. We are proud of our record of acquiring a modern house just off campus in a little over a year when some fraternities and sororities have been looking for a location for four or five years.

Plaudits are in order for Jim Hummer and Walt Nordby, housemanagers, who have been doing a herculean task in a commendable manner. Both have worked long and hard in their efforts to get everything running smoothly.

The new house has provided the setting for several social functions this fall.

Jim McClure gave several radio performances over a Chicago Radio Station and charmed many at Atlantic City, New Jersey, with his budding bar itone voice.

Clyde Zukswert returned to his old love, building, for the holiday. Henry Smith served as secretary in a Social Service Agency near Philadelphia.

Dick Runkle and Mariel Darby were joined in wedlock on September 3. Jim Witte announced his engagement to Mary Louise Reed and set the big date for December 17.

The Franklin Chapter is being host to Helmut Folchert, a German exchange student from the free state of Danzig. Helmut or "Heller," having had two years of education at the University of Marburg an der Lahn comes to this country with the purpose of comparing American law with German law. Out of ten thousand students who were tested and interviewed for the privilege of coming to this country, Heller was one of the forty-six chosen to make the trip. Heller seems to be enjoying the social life our fraternity offers him, and he certainly makes the Franklin Chapter a more interesting -place to be.

The Franklin Chapter also played host to the Eastern Regional Conference of the National Fraternity in the early part of September, having had the roof painted for the occasion. We were represented then by Clyde Zukswert, John Johl, Bill Halberstadt, Skip Eichner, and Alden Butler.

Clyde Zukswert announced big plans for our part in the campus poster contest to be held in the week end of the Navy football game. A near-by sorority house plans to cooperate with the Franklin Chapter in participating in the Annual Campus Carnival.

With the promise of many fine social events which will be aided by the "Acacia Musical Geniuses," and an ambitious rushing program ahead of us, the Franklin Chapter should soon be bursting from the seams with activity and some more of the finest men that the University of Pennsylvania can offer. You are invited to stop in any time and check up on these last few statements.

Initiation was h eld on the weekend of October 2, with twelve men receiving their jeweled pins. New members of the active chapter include Robert King, Richard Storer, Donald Funk, Robert MacMakin, Melvin Rapp, George Dayiantis, John Frazier, Kermit Hartman, Robert Robinson, Mack Follmer, and George Jesek.

Along the social front we have been holding our own fairly well without being subdued by the precarious 4 to 1 boygirl ratio that prevails on the Illinois campus. Social Chairman Tom Moore has been doing a commendable job for his part to make our college life interesting.

So far we have had a picnic supper with our backyard neighbors, the Tri Delts, and exchanges with Alpha Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, and Sigma Kappa. November 12 the pledges put on their annual dance complete with a skit and appropriate decorations. Plans are now being made for the Winter Formal and the Sweetheart dinner.

The weekend of October 22 was a gala event as a valiant band of Acacians piled into the various means of transportation on hand and journeyed to Lafayette for the Purdue-Illinois football game. Not to be out-done by their varsity brethren, a hand picked crew of toughies under manager Bruce Esmond challenged the "Purduvians" in the morning. Saturday night all hands joined in for a rousing evening of fun. Many thanks to the boys at Purdue for a swell time!

It only takes one to start the ball rolling when that pinning business begins, it seems. So when Bill Voegeli pinned Bev Schwiegle, Alpha Phi, this summer, Bob Walker and Nancy Martin and Bob Schroeder and Betty Franzen quickly followed suit.

The grueling schedule of classes hasn't been able to overcome our activity stalwarts yet. During the football season, Jerry Chalcraft, Bob and Bill Schroeder, and pledge Bob Simon held down a regular position in the world-famous Illini Marching Band. In the athletic department, Mack Follmer has reported for varsity basketball after recovering from an injury that sidelined him for the football campaign. Pledge Clive Follmer is drilling daily with the fresh quintet.

Pledge Gene Segin was out for fall baseball practice. Another pledge, Tom Bradamas, has a foothold in the Illini Union working on football pep rallies. Chuck Russell has taken over as treasurer for the lllinois Student Chapter of the American Society of Ceramic Engineers.

One reason we're glad to see the fall season roll around each year is that on the Saturday football afternoons many alums and friends drop in to see us. This is mighty fine, but why wait until football season? Stop over anytime. Remember, you're always welcome at "501."

Indiana P erpetuating their reputation as having the newest and most beautiful _fraternity house on campus, the Indiana Chapter of Acacia invested almost $5,000 during this last summer in redecorating the entire chapter house. That new look manifests itself, as a well-known furniture company would say, "from the carpets on the floors to the pictures on the wall." All thanks are due our swell alumni association. Led by Mr. Gib Corbin, Mr. Luther Ferguson, Mr. Jack Fox, and Mr. Les Ruch, the alumni started things rolling by seeing that all trimming on the outside of the house was painted.

Next came the inside; the walls were painted and new carpets and stairway runners were laid. Perhaps one of the most welcome additions was that of eight new dining room tables. To top it off, the library was graced by an entire new set of plastic leather chairs and davenports, and the furniture previously in that room was moved down to the chapter room. Every Indiana Acacian is proud and grateful-our main interest now is living up to the standard set by the house.

We have added eighteen new pledges to our roster. We also have eight men who will soon be eligible for initiation: John McClamroch, Kokomo; George Mitchell, Danville; Roger Nolan, Celina, Ohio; John Peters, Mulberry; Phillip Richardson, Bloomington; David Robertson, Princeton; William Schlimmer, Evansville ; John Thompson, Wabash.

Our social program isn't far enough along to receive much comment, but it surely started off with a bang. Our first social function of the year was a tea dance with the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Testifying to its success was a telegram of thanks from the Thetas, and a lot of the credit belongs to Jim McGowan who acted as master of ceremonies and was responsible for a good comedy skit.

Plans for the future will include exchange dinners, picnics, and more tea dances.

Jim Huffer, chairman of intramural activities, has plans for an active year of football, basketball, and all other sports.

All of us need the exercise; and, if Jim's enthusiasm has anything to do with it, we'll be looking for places to put new trophies when the intramural season is over.

So far this year we have had only three

men who have been " daring" enough to put out their pins. Paul Conrad, our Venerable Dean, is now pinned to Carroll Abbott, a Delta Zeta ; and Carolyn Birchler, a Zeta Tau Alpha is wearing Tom Muhn's pin. Carl York hung his pin on Kathleen Anders.

The wedding bells also took their toll of Indiana Acacians this summer. Ten men took the marriage vows, and here is the list of those who tied the knot: Forrest Stewart and Bette Puterbaugh, Lauren Atz and Susanna Herr, Frank Neff and J o Richards, Hal Meyers and Marcy Chastain, Pete Strayer and Martha Huffer, Jim Roderick and Vera Morgan, Bill Thompson and Peggy Adams, Gene Oliver and Betty Jo McAtee, Tom Lloyd and Betty Jo Bolden, Dick Weaver and Mary Evelyn Bowser.

This summer Paul Conrad, Bill Monteith, John Irick, and Jim Huffer attended the regional conference at Champaign, illinois. Our men were very much impressed, and they feel that they gained a great deal of information on how a fraternity should be run.

Our scholastic record for the past semester is rather good, but there is still room for improvement. The actives turned out a grade average that was second among all fraternities on campus, but the pledges' average held us down to sixth place among thirty fraternities.

However, we have a membership of 65 men ; and each will do his part in striving to win that scholarship cup for this year.

Iowa State September 12 suddenly found the Iowa State Chapter house swarming with actives and pledges armed with mops, paint brushes, brooms, and all the other paraphernalia necessary to produce a gleaming chapter house and yard for rush week.

These efforts brought forth six fine new pledges to be added to our roster. The new men are William Colville, New Sharon, Iowa; Russell Jennett, Sac City, Iowa; Marcus Merriman, Monona, Iowa; Donald Messer, Arlington, Virginia; Richard Shultice, Bondurant, Iowa; and Vince Votteler, Fenton, Iowa. In addition to these we have eleven holdover pledges giving us a fine class of seventeen men.

Their officers are Hugo Mayer, president; Don Larson, secretary; John Culver, treasurer; John Pugh, steward; and Neil Prueitt, social chairman.

As of last May 22, four more sweaters are now decorated with the jeweled triangle. They belong to Hugo Bliss, Wauconda, TIL; James Hogfeldt, Rockford, Ill. ; Kenneth Johnson, Denver, Colo.; and Ronald Durham, Fort Madison, Iowa.

This past summer the long awaited remodeling of the kitchen took place with new cabinets, tables, and equipment installed plus the rearrangement of the old furnishings. Upon our return this fall the kitchen and the basement hallway were painted and the floor tiled. Upstairs the steady bang of hammers and the slap of paint brushes was a familiar

The Triad, Fall, 1949 sound for two days as a new ceiling was installed and the walls were painted in the reception room and the solarium. Outside the major improvement was the laying of a block wall on the north slope of our driveway and regravelling of the driveway and back yard by our two "truckers," Tom Brown and Harold Skerritt. These two men possess three-quarter ton pickups which were very handy in preparation for rush week.

Intramurals have started off with a bang with the sports triad beginning last week. However, our golf putters, pingpong players, and horseshoe throwers were eliminated in the first round and our attention shifted to touch football and bowling which start this week. Volleyball is scheduled to begin later in the quarter so that it appears we will have plenty of chances to drag down some more trophies to add to our mantel collection.

With Homecoming just around the corner numerous plans are being made concerning activities for that weekend. Roger Davis is chairman of the decoration committee and with his committee has been working hard to come up with a prize winner. An informal fireside is being planned for Friday night, and on Saturday a buffet dinner is to be served after the game to alums and visitors. On Saturday night is the big Homecoming dance with Ray McKinley and his orchestra.

We're hoping to see a lot of alums back and guarantee a good time for all plus seeing in action one of the best Iowa State football teams in many a day.

Several men went to Kansas to see the football game last Saturday and reported a wonderful time. They visited with the Kansas Acacians and much to our regret we didn't have a skin bet with them on the game. Well, maybe next time. The week before, three of the fellows went to Champaign and witnessed I. S . C.'s startling tie with Illinois. They said that the Illinois boys were quite disappointed but really showed them a swell time.

Among the visitors the past three weeks have been Don Grobeck and Gordon Cook. Don stopped in on his way back to Texas from his vacation. Gordon has been here the last two weekends. He is working in Cedar Rapids.

A special election was held recently to replace Craig Bredbeck who resigned as Senior Dean due to scholastic difficulties.

John Grubb was elected to his place until regular election next quarter.

Well, another man has gone and done it. Darwin Hook returned this fall and passed cigars announcing his pinning to Miss Pauline Petersen of Rockwell.

In the early part of September, John Fulkerson, Craig Bredbeck, Carl Anderson, and Tom Brown attended the Regional Conclave at Boulder, Colorado.

The fellows came back very much impressed with the hospitality shown them, and they also acknowledged the fact that they had gained a great deal on our Fraternity functions.

Kansas The Acacia Mansion at 1147 Tennessee, Lawrence, Kansas, has a new outlook on life. The entire first floor has been recarpeted, new chairs are being put in the dining room, and individual members have redecorated their own rooms.

By far the most outstanding project of redecoration was the upstairs hall. The hall, after being painted forest green and fire-engine ¡red, was found to be somewhat lacking. Novel effects were created by painting Les Main's feet and walking him across the ceiling. Also Bob Hughes added interesting murals. Our House Mother had been living in somewhat confining quarters, but now she occupies a much larger room redecorated to suit her taste. We have connected one of the new RCA Victor 45 RPM record players to an old juke box speaker to provide us with fine dinner music by Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller. Of course, there's a little bop.

One of the graduates last year, Gerald Raines, is now a teaching assistant on the Hill. New pledge, John Hoffman, is a member of the K. U . marching band.

Speaking of bands, the one we had at our Spring Formal last year was pretty good. The dance was a huge success, but that's to be expected from the Kansas Chapter. We have initiated the idea of having the house open on Saturday night for an informal dance for those members who wish to attend. Everyone has been having fun without much preparation. We even gave square dancing a try.

Our Junior Dean was married during the summer, so we elected Alan Sandford to replace him. He is doing a bangup job. He has the Winter Formal planned for December 17. We also have a pig roast coming up after the homecoming game with Missouri on November 19. Our latest social function was a party held in conjunction with Phi Kappa at which twenty-five pounds of potato chips and forty-eight gallons of carbonated beverage were consumed. Coffee was in great demand the next morning. The party was held at the farm home of Dave Harkmans, one of our two living charter members. Much to the credit of the pledge class of the Phi Kapps and much to .the discredit of ours, we lost the challenge plaque.

We have adopted a study hall plan that requires all pledges to spend much of their free time during the day and four of their evenings deep in contemplation of the subjects which they take. The effectiveness of this study hall can't be determined yet, but it seems to be working out for the best.

Another idea this year is to set aside one night a week as "rough house night."

The housemother goes out to dinner with an active, so there is absolutely no tension when the pledge class puts on a skit to add to the gaiety.

Our membership took a drop when five of our men, John Jacques, Rix Shanline, Kenneth Tyson, Dick Garnand, and Bob Reusser decided on a married life. Our

faculty adviser, Max Fessler, also took the fatal step. Glenn Vernon, our song leader, is pinned.

The membership of our chapter really gets around. One of our pledges, as y ou may have noticed, is from Aruba, N. W. I., and another just spent two years in Alaska with the Army. Yours truly lives on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The rushing was somewhat poor there this summer.

George Kroesing, Bill Love, Bill Sharpe and Jim Eatmon spent the summer at Brooks Field, San Antonio with the A . R. 0 . T. C. unit. While they were out of the country, they made several visits to the Texas Chapter.

The "train date" this year was held at the suburban home of Fred Gableman.

We appreciated his hospitality and the assistance all the alumni gave. Perry Shrader and Cecil Haas visited the chapter house during rush week.

Kansas State A gleaming white chapter house greet~d Kansas State Chapter of Acacia as they returned from the long summer vacation months. The chapter house received a sparkling new exterior coat shortly before school started and it was a welcome sight. The interior received its annual "over-haul" and as a result we have some classy color schemes that are out of this world. It is surprising how much can be accomplished when every one works, and it seems we are always under fire to get things cleaned up for rush week. To achieve near 100 per cent attendance during these annual clean-ups we have an inducement or incentive that seems to work very nicely. A small fine for each day of absence brings excellent results.

It is a nice way for raising money for the purchase of new equipment and furniture around the house. There are those

16 who always have to be shown and as a result our downstairs windows are all sporting new venetian blinds.

Rush week was again very successful this year. Although it wasn't large we did pledge six very fine men. They are Jerry Steven Baker, Topeka, Kansas; Harold James Brodrick, Jr., Holbrook, Arizona ; Dwain Edward Lovendahl, Clyde, Kansas ; James Woodrow Snelling, Florence, Kansas ; and Dan Laverne Ward, Clay Center, Kansas. Pledge officers for this semester are Doyle Peaslee, President; Harold James Brodrick, Jr., Vice-President, and James Woodrow Snelling, Interfraternity Pledge Council Representative.

The active chapter has four new members as a result of last week's initiation.

Those initiated were Bill D. Ellermeier, James Anton Boucek, James R. Collins, and Gayle L . Vernon. We lost one good active to the Ohio State University Chapter of Acacia. He is Brother Bruce Garnand. Oh well-at least we are keeping him in the family. Congratulations, Ohio State!

The social calendar is rapidly taking shape. So far this year we have had our customary sorority hour dance in which each sorority sends four representatives to our house. It is a more or less getacquainted dance which does speed up the get-acquainted process and allows for early establishment of "beachheads" if you know what I mean. With a male to female ratio of approximately 5 to 1 you just have to be on the inside track or else.

Plans are progressing for the winter formal which is to be held on November 18 this year. Homecoming decorations are also receiving their full share of consideration at this time. Say folks-in case you don't have access to newspaperswe do have a football team here at Kansas State College this year. Just ask the Colorado Chapter of Acacia-they came -they saw-and they left for home. Their complexions blended very well with the light blue finish of their car. A buffet supper was served to parents and dates immediately after the Colorado-Kansas State football game.

Intramurals take full swing next week with the first touch football game scheduled against the Sigma Alpha Epsilon's.

Preseason activity indicates that we have some good talent and through the capable coaching of Brother Gail Roush we are looking forward to a successful season. We have several vacancies on the mantle which are just crying for shiny new trophies.

Don't forget the alums they say-don't forget the alums. I will use that statement as an appeal to all of you old timers to keep us posted on what you and your old buddies are doing. We would like to see more of you more often around the chapter house and for those who are too tied down to pay us a personal visit we would welcome a letter from time to time. These TRIAD articles are for you and they could very easily be a medium in which you could learn all the latest dope about your old side-kicks. How about it, fellas?

I would like to take just a minute of your time to call to the particular atten-

tion of all Acacians everywhere that one of our most active and interested members is now a patient in the Norton Sanitarium where he will be for quite some time. He is Brother Charles "Chuck" Hall and I know he would be so very pleased to hear from each and everyone of you. Remember-that is Charles Hall, Norton Sanitarium, Norton, Kansas. Oh yes, it just wouldn't be right if 1 didn't at least mention something about the prospective new house which we at Kansas State have been discussing and dreaming about for the past several years.

We are ¡still working on it stronger than ever, and, although it is an uphill proposition, we are hoping for a new house by 1955-have you paid your house notes lately????

Miami In my first assignment I would like to introduce the Miami Chapter, and tell you a little about our house, our members, and our activities.

At present we are leasing the white frame house at 101 East Collins Street, about a block away from campus. The house consists of five rooms downstairs and four rooms and a bath upstairs. The capacity is 16 men.

During the summer the living room and the entrance hall were completely redecorated by the members who stayed for summer school. The new wallpaper is of green, grey, and cream stripes. To match this they painted the woodwork grey and the doors green. Also, they bought new rugs and reupholstered the furniture.

The upstairs has been rearranged into two sleeping rooms, a dressing room, and a study room. We have plans for redecorating the other rooms and hope that we will have them finished by Christmas.

Our present membership includes 18 actives and 14 pledges. By Christmas most of the present pledges should be actives.

Although our numbers are few, we have several men who are very active in campus affairs. Jack Moser is president of Y. M. C. A.; Robert Crane is president of Miami Men's Counselors, vice-president of Alpha Phi Omega (service fraternity), co-chairman of the Miami Chest, and a member of the Student-Faculty Council; Thomas Bonsor is a member of the Student-Faculty Council; James Haffner is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and secretary of Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics Honorary); and Ralph Guernsey is a desk editor of the Miami Student.

For the first time we have entered a football team in intramural competition.

So far we have played two games. coming out on the losing end twice 19-12 to Zeta Beta Tau and 38-0 with Beta Theta Pi. In the future we hope to report several victories. The team is being ably coached by Melvin Christofferson-who doubles as our passing arm.

Homecoming and the Winter Formal will be the two main social events of the semester. Our Homecoming is the weekend of October 22. We hope to see a good number of our alumni and our brothers from Ohio University. The date of the Winter Formal has been tentatively set as December 10. In addition, we will be having numerous open houses and parties throughout the semester.

Michigan The Mother Chapter got off to a booming start this year with the initiation of the following brothers: William Coates from Wilmette, Illinois; William Cloon of Ironwood, Michigan; Peter Hall and Keith Near, Detroit; and John Hoyt, hailing from Pontiac.

Since the semester has just begun a pledge class has not yet been formed.

All brothers pitched in on the house in a general clean-up week. Some of the results: a new paint job on the downstairs interior, the fellows' study rooms redecorated to suit their individual tastes, resulting in such color combinations as cardinal red walls, soft pearl-gray ceiling, and white woodwork. In addition the chapter is installing a hood over the stove which we hope will pay off in a cleaner kitchen.

Our display in the Homecoming contest is at this moment of writing well under way, and promises to be one of the most colorful and ingenious on campus.

After each home game a buffet dinner and dance rounds out the traditional football Saturday in Ann Arbor. Our capable social chairman, Phil Smith, puts forth maximum effort to make each activity a great success. The football dance after the Michigan State game was highly praised and well attended by our alums. After the Army game a party on the military theme complete with gun implacements, sand bags, and even a few West Point cadets will occur. Plans are formulating for the Fall Pledge Formal, to be held December 10.

Recent visitors to the chapter house were founders Charles A. Sink and Harlan P. Rowe.

Acacians have been showered with honors here at Michigan. Our last fall's pledge class won the Sigma Chi Foundation Pledge Scholarship Trophy with a B+ overall average. Paul Brentlinger, Senior Dean, was tapped by Sphinx, junior class honor society. Dave Olsen, House Manager, was chairman of the Interfraternity Council House Managers' Association.

Dick Campbell, Venerable Dean, and Dave Stremmel joined Sigma Delta Chi, national honorary journalism society. Attending the regional conference in Champaign, Illinois, in early September were Larry Girton, Paul Campbell, Phil Smith, Dick Campbell, and Paul Brentlinger.

17 that the team as a whole placed eleventh in the nation and eight boys received individual awards. The swell job of coaching was done by Marshall Cupp, who is now teaching physical education in Killbuck, Ohio.

Northwestern Nebraska New Pledges: Charles Lundquist, Grand Island, Nebraska; Donald Chang, Honolulu, Hawaii; and Clarence Furuya, Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Nebraska Chapter got off to a rather slow start in rushing this year, but their program will continue during the semester with the object in mind of doubling the membership. The housing committee reports a very bright outlook for the very near future and it is their opinion that the chapter will be housed by the end of the year.

The members that attended the Regional Conclave in Boulder, Colorado, this year returned with new ideas and enthusiasm. One of the direct results of the Conclave was the rebirth of the old chapter publication, The Asp. The first issue of this chapter report to the alumni was mailed on the first of October. The primary purpose of the publication is to "strengthen the ties" between the active chapter and alumni.

With the possibility of a house in the near future along with new ideas brought back from the Regional Conclave the chapter as a whole has acquired an enthusiasm that it has never displayed beRICHARD P. BLUNK fore.

Ohio Greetings are extended to all from the Ohio Chapter. We had a very eventful summer with five of our brothers taking the step of matrimony. Dave Masters married Jean Graber, Alpha Gamma; Ken Coe to Faye Hoobler, Sigma Kappa; Bob Stremple to Marty Matson, Zeta Tau Alpha; Lou Sabec to Rose Lipari; and Kit Kittinger to Elnora Huber.

We are busy planning to make this the most successful year. Included in our plans, is our number one aim: to obtain a permanent home of our own. The House Committee has been busy looking over the town for any available real estate.

Plans are also underway for Homecoming and our fall costume ball.

The first week of school found the early arrivals busy cleaning up the house. The dining room was sanded and refinished.

New linoleum was put in the bathroom, and we bought a new furnace. Due to the parking situation in town, we built our own parking lot just a few yards from the house.

As a result of our Junior Olympics last May, thirteen boys were sent to the National Olympics in Cleveland this summer. We are very proud to announce

Greetings once more from Lincoln-atthe-Lake. Classes have started, but we're still operating on Rush Week energy and we're headed for a bigger and better year.

Socially, the year got under way in large fashion with a Housewarming at the chapter house. The men turned out, full strength, which meant that the basement was jammed to the limit. Brother Bill Mendrala's combo provided the dance music and the newly formed quartet sang for the benefit of the lovers of vocal talent.

On the social calendar for the futureanother party at Techny Fields with the assistance of dear old "Ma" Harms; a tea dance with Alpha Gamma Delta on October 16; co-sponsors with Kappa Delta of a dance in the party room of Scott Hall on October 14.

The intramural scene is a bit hazy at this writing, inasmuch as competition has not started yet for the black and gold. I. M. manager, Frank Hulka, has a gleam in his eye, which holds promise of an even higher climb in the sweepstakes than last year's seventh out of 52 teams.

That annual rat race called Rush Week has run its course and now that the smoke has cleared, we can report the acquisition of nineteen new men who will be brothers in three months-we hope. This year's group is one of the most cosmopolitan of recent years. Ohio State After a successful rush week the members of Ohio State Chapter settled down to another quarter of hard work and fun.

Traveling secretaries Ed Kelly and Don Bengard were on the job to help us use our new method of rushing which produced our new pledge class. The new pledges are Chuck Hummel, Maynard Buxton, Chuck Sterling, Dick Pugh, Dick Durfee, Ted Brenan, John Boughner, Frank Toth, George Madge, and Phil Preble.

Ray Pettys, who has spent the last 18 months studying and traveling in Europe, will be back at 0 . S. U . winter quarter.

Also returned from Germany are Dick Cross and family.

A diamond is now gracing the hand of Jane Rosser, fiance of Les Shipe, our extreasurer. Les is working with a firm in Seattle, Washington. Also wearing the diamond of an Acacian is Delorys McFarland. Bob Blume, your co-correspondent, is the lucky guy.

Recently married are Don Haxton and Irene Moore, Bob Davis and Rosella Horine, and Bill Bushman and Jean Studor.

Future Acacian David John Baker, new son of Bob and Mary Baker, came into the world this fall. Bob and Mary are very proud of their ten-pound ten-ounce baby.

After three years at 0. S. U. Byron Hoffman is studying medicine at Western Reserve University. Bob Barnard has also transferred to another university. He is working on his M. A. at Bowling Green State University.

Our dining room is now the proud possessor of new maple tables and chairs.

Each chair and table was donated by an active or alumnus. The donors name is burnt into the back of his chair. The Chapter is grateful to all the alumni and Roy Miller who aided in the selection of this furniture.

We now have a sunflower from the sunflower state. Bruce Garnand, formerly of the Kansas State Chapter, is now an affiliate member of Ohio State Chapter.

Oklahoma Well, the Oklahoma Chapter started off the school year with a big bang and saved twenty men from the ignominy of having to relate to their future children that they didn't pledge Acacia. These fortunate men who pledged are: Don Cohlmia, Waynoka, George McDonald, Burbank, California; Ted Hester, Blanchard; Jimmy Simmons, Ringling; Woodson Pickens, Hollis; Allan Fowler, Oklahoma City; Tracy Riley, Beaver; Dwight Hixon, Oklah~ma City; Robert Larason, Oklahoma C1ty; Kenneth White, Oklahoma City; Donald Holley, Mangum; Milton Laird, Oklahoma City; L.A. These same men, however, didn't look so hot a couple of weeks later. When they returned from taking a new initiate for a ride, they found themselves locked out with the members waiting by the upstairs windows with pails of water to greet them back! In fact, they looked a little cool after it was all over. Needless to say, fun was had by all and everything was forgiven by both parties c;:oncerned, leaving peace and harmony prevailing.

We also started the semester by initiating twelve men. They are: James Billingsly, Norman; Bob Loftis, Holdenville; Paul Schillings, Harrison, Arkansas; Jack Starkey, Altus; David Loveland, Stony Creek, Connecticut; William Heath, Norman; Lon Argebright, Duncan; Houston Beauchamp, Texarkana, Texas; Ray Bob Jones, Mangum; Thomas Ballew, Coffeyville, Kansas; John Luck, Magnolia, Arkansas; and Dr. Harold Hinman, Norman.

One of these initiates, Dr. Harold Hinman, is the Chairman of the Department of Public Health at the University of Oklahoma. He has a Bachelor of Arts from Queens University, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy frorr.

Cornell, Doctor of Medicine from Louisiana State University, and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Hinman's son, Edward, was initiated into this chapter last March, so this was one of the rare cases where the son was the member and the father was the pledge.

We hope that Ed wasn't too hard on his dad while he was still a pledge! HA! When we came back to school this fall were were pleasantly surprised to find a new lounge and coke bar had been put in the house this summer. The room is of knotty pine paneling and is furnished in a western style with indirect lighting.

It cost us a little over $5,000 but we think it was worth it as it has done wonders for the moral of the house.

We had our Fall Formal September 24 and everyone enjoyed it immensely. The Ramblers played for us and Mother Caldwell, Dean and Mrs. Johnson were acting as chaperones.

Bob Bergheim, from the Colorado Chapter visited us during our rush week and aided us greatly by supplying entertainment with the piano. We hereby tender Bob a vote of thanks for this and hope he comes to see us again.

Preston Moore, who graduated last June with a degree in petroleum engineering, visited us recently. He is working for the Humble Oil Co. at Houston, Texas.

We also had a visit from Dean Seaton, who graduated last June, and is using his degree in radio to good advantage. He is Sports Director of station KASA, Elk City, Oklahoma.

We are proud of active member Jim Bob Snodgrass who was elected president of the University of Oklahoma Band for this year. We are also proud of Brother Dee Andros who is a first-string guard for the Oklahoma University football team. This makes Acacia represented during the whole football game.

Stanley Bailey was elected to the post of Junior Dean to fill the vacancy left

by Buel Humphreys who graduated last June. Stan has been doing a fine job this semester and we are very proud of him.

Buel Humphreys is also working for an oil company in Houston, Texas, and we hear he is doing a fine job.

Richard A. Dolman, '49, is now a copilot for the Chicago and Southern Air Lines out of New Orleans, so if you catch a plane out of there, look him up.

Bill Valentine, '48, from Bradford, Pennsylvania, came back to Oklahoma University this year to start work on a law degree. Ron Wesner, Cordell, also came back to school this year. Ron has been in the Naval Air Corps.

We regretted very much the passing away last June of our friend, brother, and benefactor, Lew Wentz. His passing will be greatly felt among the members of this chapter as well as the rest of the state and nation.

Dr. D. B. R. Johnson, Dean of the Oklahoma University School of Pharmacy for

thirty-five years, retired this fall. He has been our chapter advisor for a number of years and at times had to carry a part of the chapter's burdens on his own able shoulders. We \vill greatly miss his guiding hand in the years to come and humbly acknowledge and thank him for his assistance in the past.

Several of our brothers were married this summer. They are: Leroy Stuart to Laura Goodnight of Dallas; Jack Gallaher to Phyllis Phillips of Oklahoma City; Bob Vick to Shirley Kitch of Oklahoma City; George Williams to Orietta Garrison of Shawnee; Lon Argabright to LaNell Herrington of Duncan.

In addition to this several more were pinned. Oklahoma A. & M. As the new school year gets under way the Acacia boys here at A. & M. have worked hard in refinishing the house and putting it in shape for 1949 and 1950. We are looking forward to a successful year in every branch of activity.

We have a return of 23 members and 10 new pledges to keep the lights of Acacia shining very bright.

The Triad, Fall, 1949 Everyone was very happy to learn that we stood eighth out of 19 in the scholastic row this year. We pledge ourselves to make the following years points higher.

The new pledeges we have are as follows: Glen Knight, Dell City, Oklahoma; Martin Schmidt, Stillwater, Oklahoma; Carl Wetting, White City, Kansas; Harry Wickes, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Dean Piersall, Shattuck, Oklahoma.

Our chapter was represented at the conclave in Boulder, Colorado, this season by the following: Ken. Havenstrite, Don Piersall, Blake Hedrick, and Wayman Calavan. We gained knowledge that will help us to be a better chapter in the coming years, upholding Acacia standards.

A few of our members and one pledge ended up on the married list this summer. They are Tom Lee, John Howell, Dick Eaton, and Pledge Darrell Canfield.

We wish them happiness and success throughout the years to come. Also on the engaged list are Ken. Havenstrite to Miss Dorothy Huffhines, and Harvey Abrams to Miss Louise Lewis. Good luck, fellows.

We were very happy to receive a new living room rug from the alumni and also new upholstery for the furniture.

The boys here at A . & M. are making plans to try for the "Varsity Review Show," an over-all school review, to be presented the latter part of the fall semester. Any suggestions from our brother fraternities would be deeply appreciated.

We are planning a large intramural schedule this season. The football team has been showing up very good in practice games so far. We have an excellent group of boys this year and with a little work we can have some winning teams.

We were happy to have the presence of Jim Green in our first meeting this year and very proud to announce he is becoming active again. Jim was an active member before the war.

Everyone is very happy to have our housemother, Mrs. Thomas, back with us again this year. We think she is very wonderful. Also we are happy to keep our cook of last year. "Good Food." We do regret to say that our former housemother, Mrs. Crain, is very ill. We wish her a speedy recovery.

A report on recent graduated members finds Gene Russel working with Kansas City Southern Railroad at Pittsburg, Kansas. Gene is a graduate in Civil Engineering. Bill Roach is doing Civil Engineering with the Missouri State Highway Department at Willow Springs, Missouri, and Tom Lee, a graduate in accounting, is working with the Extension Division here at A. & M. College. Good luck, fellows, and do come to see us.

We elected two new officers to the house who will replace the retiring offices of House Manager and Treasurer, and Senior Dean. They are Blake Hedrick and Lynn Eaton, respectively.

Last but not least we are making plans for Homecoming which will be October 15. If our ideals hold out we may be able to win the float contest. L. D . EATON

Oregon State The Oregon State Chapter of Acacia had the privilege of being host to the regional conference of the West Coast September 8, 9, and 10. Under the ponderous guidance of one "Humphrey" G. Croyle, we began with a reception on Thursday, September 9. Short lectures followed by discussions were given as scheduled throughout the day and continued through Saturday, ending with a banquet in the evening.

John Hazelwood of the Washington State Chapter presented an excellent talk on rushing and pledging procedure. Don Bloomburg of Southern California continued with Pledge Education by giving a detailed analysis. Bert Hathaway's session on THEl TRIAD in the afternoon caused a heated discussion, which was of intense interest to everyone. The main item of business covered Sturday was a dance to be held during the winter quarter by each of the chapters using the same theme.

The object of this proposal is to promote a national annual dance which will be synonomous with Acacia. The advantages of this type of a social function are: it will promote publicity for the fraternity, will build interchapter relations, and provide a method for standardizing dance programs and bids. It was formally decided by the western chapters that a costume ball with an Egyptian theme would be the most appropriate for Acacia. Ron Kilgore of California is the chairman of the committee which is carrying out the decision of the Western Chapters for obtaining a name for the ball and an emblem to be approved by all the chapters involved. It was the hope of the conference that this would start the ball rolling and at the National Convention at Boulder, Colorado, next summer a national annual dance will be a reality.

Saturday afternoon Chris Gabriel, National Secretary of Acacia, gave an inspiring speech advocating a publicity campaign for the fraternity. Other points which he covered were the workings of the National Council and what Acacia stands for. At the conclusion of his address he presented the group with two printed sheets suitable for framingACACIA FRATERNITY UPHOLDS and ACACIA IS THE NAME OF MY FRATERNITY. A banquet was held in the evening at the Corvallis Hotel formally closing the conference.

Oregon State Acacians returning to the house this fall found the inte rior redecorated. Under the supervision of Jim Sampson and Bill Gunther, house manager and treasurer respectively, several working parties were held this summer for members who could attend, and as a result the living room was remodeled.

Thanks are extended to the Mother's Club which presented us with new drapes to match.

Ted Pimm, Doug Blair, Harvey Bar nockle, and Lyle Knower were four poor unfortunates who were snared into wedded bliss by designing females over the summer months. To fill their places

Socially we're loaded! Fall dance October 22, exchange dinners, firesides, father's day openhouse, and the usual fall homecoming celebration will keep us more than busy with activities on the weekends. The boys are getting lots of good exercise getting our team in shape for intramural football.

Penn State The members of our chapter, after spending a carefree summer, started arriving at the house on September 18.

Classes did not start until September 28 ; nothing like a nice long summer.

The members are all looking forward to the Junior Prom on October 28. The house will have a dance on the following night. The plans for this dance are only in the process of being formed.

The alumni had the bath rooms of the house renovated during the summer. The job was supposed to be completed by September 15. As of October 3 the job is 75 per cent finished. We are all looking forward to the time when it will be done.

The house, after ten years of hard work, has finally become the proud possessor of a ping-pong table. A little extra work by two of our pledges brought the table from its resting place to the chapter house.

Most of our recent graduates are now working. The lucky ones are Richard Morgan with the State Equalization Tax Board; Dave Sims, the Pennsylvania State Highway Department; William Echelmeyer, Boy Scouts of America; Richard Lashley, Potomi<:-Edison Electric Company. Edward Price received his master's degree and is now working on his doctor's in Diary Manufacturing at Penn State. G. Richard Gillespie is working on his master's degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois.

Purdue The chapter house at Purdue has undergone an extensive face lifting since last semester. New furniture for the porch and chapter room was purchased during the summer. Also, interior decorating of

20 Celotex and leather-covered Masonite is the keynote to a new atmosphere added to the study r ooms, halls, and bathrooms of the second and third floors. The first floor was r etrimmed last year.

Hardly had fall registration been completed when the normal rou~~e of sch?ol was interrupted by the traditional semor cord hunt and parade. The senior cord hunt pits the seniors' ability to hide their yellow cords on fraternity prop~~ty against the freshmen and sopho~ores Ingenuity at finding and decoratmg them.

An unusual hiding place that was used this year is shown in the picture of several seniors recovering their cords after the hunt. The cords had been hidden by making a false concrete cistern cover in which they had hidden four pairs. Of a total of eighteen seniors, only five were unlucky enough to have their cords found and painted before they were worn in the senior cord parade.

Many happenings of a matrimonial nature have occurred since the last issue.

On the alumni side, Richard Wheaton married Pat McKinley, David Hoban married Grace Do an, James Sherwood married Virginia Dalton, and Ellen Luxsinger became the wife of James Baynes.

Active Earl A . James married Peggy Amy. Both Samuel Fox and Roy Horton mysteriously lost their pins, but soon the jeweled 3-4-S's turned up on the sweaters of Marie Sikich, Alpha Delta Pi, and Jean Hulley, respectively. Miss Hulley is an Alpha Xi Delta of Indiana University. It appears to me that Brother Horton will be in a dilemma when the time comes for him to decide his allegiance during the next I. U. and Purdue football game.

We of the Purdue Chapter regret to announce the death of alumnus Luther Baynes last July.

With the pledging of five men, Howard Henry Hanes, Kendallville, Indiana; Joseph Lawrence Hostetler, Jr., Zionsville, Indiana ; Herbert Kimbark O'Young, Chicago, illinois; Thomas Lee Timothy, Earl Park, Indiana; and V. Herbert Ulrich, Patterson, New Jersey, the size of the chapter has been increased to forty-two.

With the addition of an annex this year the added capacity will make it possible to pledge a few more men.

On October 22 the annual homecoming celebration was held with many alumni attending. A buffet supper provided the scene for a general get-together of the many guests who were present. The second annual football game between the illinois Chapter and ourselves concluded the football activities of the day.

We must not overlook the famous Acacia bowling team which finished with high h onors in last semester's bowling league. Things are certainly hopeful in the outlook for this year.

Also on the schedule were luncheon exchanges with the Alpha Gamma Deltas and the Chi Omegas, a party with the Chi Omegas and the large week of homecoming. In the homecoming parade, which toured downtown Los Angeles, S. C. Acacia entered a large and colorful float.

The guiding geniuses behind the float were Karl Klokke, Bill Stevens and Glynn Boies who was chairman of the chapter's homecoming activities.

Near the start of the semester, the initiation ceremonies were held with a banquet attended by campus and civic dignitaries immediately following.

George Croyle, traveling secretary, dropped by to look in on Southern California Acacia just after the semester opened.

The men of the house moved down the row in a body to serenade Bill Clemens and his Kappa Alpha Theta pinnee J o Schilling. With a candle-outlined triangle in the middle of their group, the men alternately sang and listened to the return singing of Miss Schilling's Theta sisters. The same Bill Clemens was earlier elected to the presidency of the Trojan Squire's, S. C.'s lower division honor and service group.

Merrie Johnson, S. C.'s Flash Gordon, was elected to membership in the Trojan Knights, senior service and honor group; Don Daniels was elected to the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences Council; Bill Walbert was elected to the College of Commerce Council, while Joe Bloch was given a position on the staff of El Rodeo, S. C.'s yearbook.

Southern California Acacia enjoyed one of its best and most profitable rushing seasons, and was further gladdened by the award of ten interfraternity scholarship keys to its members who managed to attain a grade point of 1.75. .

A bow-legged bow wow, named Pythagoras of course, was acquired by the house.

By repute a thoroughbred English Bulldog, the month-old mass of cartilage resembles more a wrinkle-faced gopher than anything else.

Syracuse Summer has passed, Fall is here, and so is school. All actives and pledges of Syracuse re turned ready to spend another year under the books. However, several took the big "I do" during the vacation and just returned. Our Venerable Dean, A. J. Park and Brother Dave Brouse were the two actives that went overboard; also four of last year's graduates went with them-Jack Mitchell, Roge Witherall, Bob Howes, and Paul Converso . We congratulate you and wish you all the best of luck.

As before each date the coed powders her nose, so before each school year the

21 fraternity house redecorates its walls.

This year the Sirackusans went all out.

They painted the living-room pearl-grey, the chapter room peach, the bathroom blue and three study rooms green, yellow and grey, and yellow. Al Knox, one of our Fine Arts majors, adorned the walls with several of his fine oil landscapes. They add greatly to the general appearance of the living-room and hall.

Uncle Chuck Rice, our one-man committee in athletics, has started the Fraternity Grid Team on to this year's road of fame in the interfraternity leaguehe says. We hope so! Two weeks ago the first annual brother-pledge football game was played. Naturally, the pledges, tho they tried hard, were smeared by their more adept opponents, six to twelve.

Speaking of pledges, there are six in Syracuse who are wearing the worried look: Mike Lazo, Dan "Stumpy" Schildkraut, Duane Beckhorn, George Kohler, Dick "Hot Rod" Jocylen, and Ted Rathke.

Time draws nigh!

As the house stays in the state of being too big for its britches, comtemplations in finance, etc., have slowed the progress toward a bigger and better home sweet home further up the hill. But we sure hope the next TRIAD Report will be sent from there.

Texas After going through three hectic days of rush parties, the Texas Chapter pledged five men. They are Charles Dishongh, Cleveland, Texas ; Dowell Naylor, Waco; Alan Dean and Henry Moore, Austin; Nick Nelson, Amarillo. Nick is the son of alum E. C. Nelson and brother of Lige Nelson, an active.

In October we initiated Jack Steele, Austin; Jack Harden, Hamlin ; and Lloyd (Mickey) Williams, Texarkana. These men bring our number of actives to thirtytwo.

About a week before our rush parties began, A. W. LeNoir, George Allen, and Lee Hay came up from Beaumont and painted the upstairs hall. The dark, depressing woodwork is now a cheerful white.

Jimmy Gee, our Senior Dean, was appointed to the Student Assembly by the Student Body President. Jimmy will represent the School of Education. Paul Rothermel has announced that he will run for the School of Law Assemblyman this fall. Even though the chapter does not belong to the fraternal political clique, we manage to have our share of politics.

In a larger field, W eldom Holcomb is running for the State Legislature as representative from his district around Tyler.

Last year there were twenty-three students in the legislature. Weldom says that there's always room for one more.

A picnic and swimming party at Rio Vista Park in San Marcos opened the social season for the Texas Chapter. The swimming part didn't work so well, though, because a "norther" blew in that day and it was a bit chilly. The "norther" was very freakish because we usually don't have cold weather until December.

In the spring a young man's fancy turns to love, but Texas Acacians don't wait on spring. Richard Bennett pinned Jean Law and Bill Clark pinned Julia Field.

Both boys have taken their trip to the fountain. Paul Rothermel also took a a dunking just on general principles.

The chapter has acquired a ping-pong table: We have a lot of hot-shot players runrung loose around the house that we didn't know about. We might do something this year in the intermural pingpong t~urnament. Our house manager, Dave Hmer, seems to hold sway in the chapter right now.

We had some excitement the first week in October. Dave Hiner's Studebaker Lee Hay's Chevrolet, Ike Lauderback's' Lincoln (Cosmopolitian, no less) , and Vaun Johansen's Buick were parked in front of the house. Then along came a reckless (Austin) driver, scraped Ike's Lincoln and smashed in Lee's fender. The car then bounced across the street and knocked Dave's car over the curb and smashed into the front end of Vaun's '49 Buick.

Louis Baethe has been elected our financial adviser upon the resignation of Dr. T. A. Rousse. Dr. Rousse said that he had to be out of town so much as chairman of the Department of Speech that he could not help us as much as he would like to. Nobody has been elected to replace Mr. Baethe as faculty adviser.

Fall, 1949---and another school year begins for the Acacians at UCLA. Gathering at the fraternity house on the 4th of September, we formulated our goals for the semester. The prime objectives were found to be an increase in membership during the next year, and an added emphasis upon scholarship, particularly with the pledges. The week of the 5th to the lOth was set aside as "work week" with everyone turning out to clean and paint up the house after its summer dormancy.

Six of us were fortunate in being able to attend the Regional Conference at Corvallis, Oregon. It was of particular value to us as a new Chapter, not having the experience of the years behind us. All of us came back with a wealth of new ideas.

At this date 10 men have been pledged and we are hoping for about five more in the near future . The Chapter roll now lists 45 men and all the 24 bunks in the house have been filled up, including our annex. On October 16 ten more actives were added to the Chapter after first taking a little week-end journey. They were honored at a banquet given on that evening at the Chapter house.

The social program for the fall semester promises to keep everyone fairly active.

Toby Madison, Junior Dean, has planned about eight sorority dinner-dance exchanges; a Homecoming dance for the new initiates and the California Chapter men down for the Cal-UCLA game on October 29; our first Founders' Day Banquet on November 27; and a formal dinner-dance sometime in December.

These will be interspersed with a number of date dinners and house dances. Along with socials comes intramurals, and under the direction of Pierre Kern it is shaping up quite well. At present we are playing football, and will subsequently go into volleyball. Even if we don't win we have a good time.

George Croyle stayed with us for about a week in the middle of September enroute to the University of Arizona colony.

George is to be congratulated on the part he played in making the Regional Conference at Corvallis the success that it was.

Matrimon y Department : On the 4th of September one of our members, Lee Griffen, and his lovely fiancee, Maureen Roletti, were united in marriage. They honeymooned in Santa Barbara and are now living in North Hollywood. Just recently, at a date dinner, one of our stalwarts John Johnson and Joree Schmidt announced their engagement with the big day sometime next June. We wish both of these couples the best of everything.

"Hats Off Department: Hats off to John Blatchi Lyon for the excellent job he has done as Venerable Dean of our Chapter during the past semester. John is being succeeded by Byron Hicks who should also prove to be a good leader.

Hats off to Robert Shaw for the tremendous effort he has put forth as Rushing Chairman. As our new Senior Dean, we expect big things of Bob.

NO SAG, NO BEND, NO BUST. These are the passwords of Washington Chapter.

Why? These words result from the broad house improvement program. Discussion of changes started in chapter meetings last spring, and under the impetus of ambitious Cliff Evans and "Andy" Anderson, the plans rapidly expanded during the summer.

Starting in the basement, the walls were torn out and a thirty-two foot steel supporting beam and column were substituted, thus doubling the chapter room and recreational facilities. The walls are finished in knotty pine, the ceiling in Celotex complete with flush lighting fixtures, and the floor in asphalt tile with an inlaid design of our sacred triangle.

New benches around the room, which are removable for dancing, give a brother a chance to ease his clavicle during chapter meetings. Adjacent to the eight hundred square-foot chapter room is the newly-created pool room complete with renovated table and new equipment. The acquisition of a new ping-pong table completes the furniture in the basement.

Along with this summer building program, "Ham" Dudley sold the fellows on the idea of a built-in radio and phonograph system between the recreation and living room. As a result, some of the more fertile brains of . the chapter designed and built a knotty pine cabinet into the recreation room wall to house record changer, amplifier, and record albums.

This arrangement provides two speakers in the recreation room with another in the living room, each with separate controls.

Another attraction of the chapter room is the new home of "Tex," the Washington Bull. This marvel of engineering is the result of an opium dream suffered one night by the illustrious keeper of the beloved bovine, little Bill "Nap" Burdue.

It consists of a built-in wall safe, inside dimensions two by two feet, surrounded by a six inch layer of concrete. In front for clear vision is a one inch thickness of "Bull"et proof glass and in back, a triple tumbler combination lock. Note to State: "For further information, bring your stethoscope."

New carpeting on the stairs between the four floors along with new rugs in the guest room, reading room, and Venerable Dean's room combine with newlysanded floors throughout the house to make our house one of the best on campus.

Forty new airfoam dining room chairs along with new davenport and chair, desks and bunks make possible this year's gain in membership at Washington Chapter.

Another addition to the house this year is the town-men's room. This marvel of carpentry was the project of the town men themselves and provides a knotty pine retreat for the members living at home.

We of the Washington Active Chapter and the Alumni Association are proud of our great expansion program this summer.

Washington State The Washington State Acacians returned to the campus September 7 to prepare the house for rush week. In addition to redecorating the interior of the house, two new leatherette divans and a chair were purchased for the living room.

We are pleased to welcome as new pledges: Keith McConnel, Cheney; Robert Speer, Spokane; William Swanland, Burlington; and Richard King, Taft, California. It also gives us great pleasure tQ announce the initiation of Gordon Sylvester, Oroville; Charles Jehle, Opportunity; William Rowles, Cheney; Gene Groshong, Centralia; and Gene Conley, Richland.

Bud Armstrong was elected to take the place of our social chairman, George Gillette, who was unable to return to school this semester. Our first social function was a fireside at the chapter house. The pledges entertained the Kappa Kappa Gamma pledges with a coffee hour, and have scheduled their semi-formal for October 14.

June 5, Lester Liebel, former V.D. and Milly Swales were united in marriage at the local Methodist church. Les and Milly are at home in Ephrata, where he is assistant extension agent for Grant County.

John Tisdale gave his pin to Shirley Sweeney, K.K.G., last summer; and Dick Patton returned to school pinned to Mary Gentry, Davis Hall.

Two very coveted positions on the campus have been filled by two of our members. H-erb Lowers was elected president of the Inter-Fraternity Coordinating Council, and Duane Stowe is now president of the Inter-Collegiate Knights.

This puts three of the local Acacians into top positions on the campus as Bill Gammie was elected president of the Inter¡ Fraternity Council last spring. Bill was also tapped into Crimson Circle, senior men's honorary.

A touch football game is planned for November 19 with the Washington Chapter at Seattle. It is hoped that the game will be held annually and a trophy is to be awarded the winning_ team each year. We have played several touch football games and the bowling team has entered the bowling league play. Last year the house team led team standings for a greater part of the campaign.

Last spring's graduated seniors have sent us word concerning their present activities. Cal Liebel is with the Soil Conservation Service at Walla Walla.

Wyoming The chapter is now reassembled for another year of mental toil and anguish.

It was rather hard to sober up after partyparty day in and day out. After a busy week of rushing, we emerged victorious with seven fine pledges. Richard Comes and Douglas Fuller from Shoshoni (where's that?), Wyoming, joined our ranks on September 24 along with Tom Feeney, tenor from Hanna, Wyoming; Bill "Ride-em-Cowboy" Hepp, Buffalo, Wyoming; Jim "Coach" Hunter, Riverton, Wyoming; Clarence "Clancy" Mercer, LaGrange, Wyoming; and John "Their loss, our gain" Trimmer, Lander, Wyoming. ¡ Two new men have been initiated into the chapter since last roll call. Dean Clark and Bob Hurrell were initiated on June 8 with much celebration. Why? School was officially over for the '48-'49 academic year, but Dean and Bob got a good going over anyway.

This summer, in spite of heat, drouth, and strikes, quite a number of improvements were made on the house. It is now repainted inside and out, a side door added to the basement so that traffic through the kitchen has stopped, enlarging of several basement rooms and the kitchen, replastering in many places, and the building of a more c'onvenient storeroom. New cupboards and sink have been installed in the kitchen so that Ma Jackson has all the room she needs for the "vittles."

The social season has started and many of the freshmen seem to be enjoying themselves. New faces, figures, personalities, etc., not to mention the old faces.

With the ratio of men to women 3.25 to 1, many of the boys are expressing the hope that more of the eastern and southern women follow Horace Greeley's advice, "Go West, young woman, go West," or words to that effect.

At the Regional Conclave in Boulder, Colorado, our chapter was represented

by Wallace Moon, Venerable Dean; Bob "Vooner" Vaughan, Senior Dean; Bill "Hot-to-Go" Gilbert; and Mother Jennings. The Colorado Chapter certainly put on a fine Conclave, even if the liquid refreshment was only 3.2.

All of the guys seem to have had a good summer. The only mishap was Joe Mascher, but he claims it was a horse that broke his ribs. Who are we to ask questions? With our fine group of men, we have great hopes for the new school year. By this I mean we should capture the football cup. What a powerhouse.

Good luck to the rest of the chapters of Acacia in the coming year.

conclusion of your interview, you are offered a job of lesser importance than the one to which you aspired, accept it. At the start, the performance, not the title, is the important thing. If you are good, your superiors will usually find out.

Once you have secured a spot in your desired activity, your real responsibility begins. Do every job assigned to you thoroughly. Regardless of how unimportant any task may seem, it should be tackled as if a great deal depended upon the outcome. Be cooperative. Always be willing to lend a helping hand to a fellow staff member. When assigned a job, do just a little more than necessary. Things done in a better than average fashion will always attract notice. Never fail to show up when you are scheduled to work. Dependability is a great promotion factor and essential to activity success. Above all, keep your activities on a business basis. Always feel free to discuss your ideas, objections, or suggestions with the people working above you. Such discussions are often the breeding places of good ideas. However, never confuse this privilege with the right to refuse an order or request once it has been given. To be a good leader, one must first be a good follower.

To all of the above, a note of caution must be added. A student's primary responsibility is to his studies.

Extracurricular activities, by their very nature, are intended to supplement, not supplant school work. One who allows this arrangement to become unbalanced is in dangerous territory and will probably find that success in both school work and activities is greatly curtailed.

We of the fraternity world are a privileged community and something extra is required of us. That something is service to our university, to our fraternity, and to the fraternity movement as a whole. Our fraternity membership is a trust. We will be held accountable for what we do with it.

Let us all strive to be good executors!

It was formally decided by the western chapters that a costume ball with an Egyptian theme would be the most appropriate for Acacia. Ron Kilgore of California was made chairman of the committee which includes a member of each coast chapter. The mechanics

of this proposed dance are to be worked out before Christmas so that each chapter will have an opportunity to swing into action this school year.

It was the hope of the conference that this would start the ball rolling and at the National Convention in Colorado next summer a national annual dance will become a reality.

Eastern Thursday, September 8, was "ADay" for over sixty delegates from Cornell, Franklin, George Washington, Penn State, Rensselaer, Syracuse, Maine, and New Hampshire, who gathered at the Chapter House in Philadelphia for the Eastern Regional Conference which began on Friday. An informal party was held on Thursday evening so that the delegates could get acquainted before the sessions got underway.

Friday and Saturday were devoted entirely to lectures and discussions of the various phases of fraternity management and the particular problems confronting the various chapters. The speakers were primarily older men who had had long experience in the problems which they discussed. Dr. William S. Dye, Past National P r esident of Acacia, discussed Fraternity History and Traditions; Ray C. Thomas National Counsellor of Acacia, described the proper procedures for Chapter House Financing; Marion Huber, Acacia's National Treasurer, led the session on Scholarship; Herbert L . Brown, National President of Phi Sigma Kappa, spoke on Chapter Leadership; and Clarence Raby, National Counselor of Alpha Tau Omega, gave his ideas on Pledge Training.

On Saturday evening all delegates adjourned to the Penn-Sheraton Hotel for the Conference Banquet. Dr. Dye was the main speaker and he was in fine form as he told of the need for closer cooperation between fraternities and universities.

Sunday found the delegates returning to their chapters, full of interest and enthusiasm for the coming year:

Mid-West Represented at the Conference at the Illinois Chapter on September 2 and 3 were Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Miami, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio, Ohio State, and Purdue, plus colonizers from Wisconsin and Tennessee. The conference was under the direction of Ed Kelly, assisted by Don Bengard, the new traveling secretary.

Among the speakers at the Training School sessions were Marion Huber and Ray Thomas, members of Acacia's National Council; Mr. Gregg, Dean of Fraternities at the University of Illi-

24 nois, who gave an excellent talk on pledge training; George E. Ekblaw, and Larry Girton. A number of suggestions were made for possible revisions to the National Constitution and By-Laws; these were turned over to George Patterson, Adviser to the Cincinnati Chapter for further action.

An informal get-together was held for the delegates on Thursday evening and a concluding banquet at the Urbana-Lincoln Hotel on Saturday evening. Featured speaker at the latter event was Dean Fred Turner of the University of Illinois and a former National P resident of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

Dr. Lent D. Upson Dr. Lent D. Upson, Illinois, '09, dean of the Wayne University school of public affairs, died at his Detroit home on May 10, 1949. A life-long student of government, Dr. Upson was for 28 years the head of the Detroit Bureau of Governmental Research. He had been a professor of government at Wayne since 1935.

His thoroughgoing criticisms of the affairs of local and state government in the last three decades highlighted many controversies. Dr. Upson's philosophy was that government is a citizen's business every day of the year and not just on election day. He made it his business to keep an eye on the citizen's business.

The dean served on the Michigan State commission on Civil Service legislation and was a member of that state's commission on reform and modernization in government, and was chairman of the Michigan Tax Study Commission.

Born in 1886, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin and was awarded the doctorate of philosophy at the University of Illinois in 1911.

From 1912 to 1915 he was the director of the Dayton, Ohio, Bureau of Municipal Research and in 1917 was a lecturer in political science at the University of Michigan. He was the author of numerous books and magazine articles on municipal government.

Henry Andrew, Number One at Colorado, Dies Henry 0. Andrew, the first man on the roll book of the Colorado Chapter, died recently at his home in Boulder.

Brother Andrew received his bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1896 and a degree in law in 1899. Following graduation he practiced law in Boulder. In 1905-06 he was city attorney, and was elected to the state senate in 1916. He was a member of several

Fraternity Mourns Passing of W. ~lmer Ekblaw; Former National President, Secretary, and Editor Dr. W. Elmer Ekblaw who served as a National Officer of Acacia for nearly twenty years, died at his home in WoQster, Massachusetts, on June 5, 1949, at the age of 67. He was widely known in the scientific world as a geographer, biologist, and botanist, and was professor of geography at Clark University, with which he had been associated for twenty-three years preceding his death.

To Acacians, however, Dr. Ekblaw was best known for his many years of faithful service as National President from 1918 to 1919, National Editor in 1919 and 1920, and as National Secretary 1919 to 1937. During the time of his service the Fraternity experienced many crises and his wise counsel was most valuable to the preservation and growth of Acacia. He had been initiated at the University of Illinois in 1907 and was number 63 on the chapter roll.

In 1913, after obtaining his master's degree from Illinois he was chosen botanist and geologist for the MacMillan Crocker Land expedition which spent four years exploring the northwest part of Greenland and other Arctic areas. As a result of this expedition and his subsequent researches, Dr. Ekblaw lectured frequently and was the author of many articles which were published in scientific journals.

In 1926 he received his Ph.D. from Clark University and in 1947 was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from Upsala College.

Literally dozens of organizations claimed Dr. Ekblaw as one of their members; these included groups devoted to such diverse fields as the sciences, history, politics, ornithology, and horticulture. Of many of these organizations he served as an officer at one time or another. He was vice-

president of the Association of American Geographers, president of the American Society of Professional Geographers, trustee and past-president of the Massachusetts Archeological Society, trustee of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, past-trustee and past-vice-president of the Massachusetts Farm Bureau, trustee and life member of the American Swedish Historical Foundation, past-president of University of Illinois Alumni Association. He was executive secretary of the campaign to raise two-and-a-half million dollars for Illinois' Memorial Stadium and co-founder of the first collegiate homecoming. In 1942 he was made a Knight of the Order of the North Star by King Gustaf of Sweden.

Besides his wife, Dr. Ekblaw is survived by two sons, a daughter, three brothers, two grandchildren, five nieces, and four nephews.

Leo T. Gibbons Dies; Lawyer in Kansas Leo T. Gibbons, Kansas, 06, one of the oldest lawyer-abstractors in Kansas, died February 21 at the age of 81.

He had practiced in Scott City for more than 40 years after helping to establish American schools in the Philippines after the Spanish-American War. A year ago, he and Mrs. Gibbons deeded their $30,000 home and

McKinley Killed; Atomic Reseacher

Dr. J. J. McKinley was killed in an airplane crash last spring while on a routine flight for the U. S. Atomic Research Unit. He had been initiated into the Colorado chapter in January, 1929, and received his degree in chemical engineering; he was active in all fraternity affairs and was a member of a number of honorary societies.
