Great Changes Ahead in College Education The times we live in are revolutionary. The college graduate of 1885 may still be alive and act as witness to the far-reaching changes which have taken place in American life during the past six decades. The Harvard Report emphasizes the drastic effect those changes have had upon American education, how slow and even backward we have been in finding effective new directions to old objectives.

Great, however, as have been the changes of the recent past, the college graduate of 1945 will see in the halfcentury before him changes of even greater range and moment. It behooves us who have not yet adjusted ourselves to what has happened to put our house in order before we are truly overcome.

I do not believe the cause is hopeless. The main reason for optimism is that the problems of the next generation in education are to be in kind much like those which beset us in the past quarter century-a new concept of education for careers; the hostility between advocates of heritage and champions of change, a hostility we now see can be resolved; the demands of professional training; the conflict between our ever growing specialism and the education which all students need in common, a conflict from which we are emerging into a solution; the growth in numbers and the question of who shall be educated and how; the ideal that all American youth be given the education which best serves individual needs and the nation's good, and the difficulty of achieving that great end.

These are the problems which beset us during the twenty-five years and made for so great a ferment of criticism and disagreement. These are also the problems which we shall face in the next quarter century. We are better equipped to face them now than previously, just as the United States today is more experienced in facing the turbulent world of international affairs than in 1919. The colleges were a great laboratory of experimentation during the decades of the twenties and thirties. Out of experimentation, sobered by the responsibility that war placed on all of us, has come a thorough-going appraisal of methods and objectives. The future years should see our institutions of higher learning make the adjustment by formulating new ways to achieve the old objectives.

The Twenty-Fourth Conclave DHERING to the pattern set by the previous Conclave (the 23rd at Purdue) , the 24th Conclave was a far cry from the Conclaves of previous years. Believe it or not, Old Timers, less than six hours were consumed by legislation and debate!

The opening session was called to order at 10:12 a. m., Wednesday, August 28th, by National President Walter Kolbe and after appointment of committees and the reports of the National Officers (see National President's R eport on page 3) the Conclave adjourned (at 11:10 a. m .) and Jack Erwin opened the training school session. The team of Erwin, Jarrett and Croyle, the latter two brothers being the two traveling secretaries appointed by the National Council, the training school moved along covering every detail of chapter operation from the rushing program to the proper thing to do when an alumnus joins the Chapter Eternal. A copy of the training school manual, comprising more than 200 pages of single-spaced mimeographed material, compiled and edited

by Jack Erwin and Walter Kolbe, with some assistance from John Walker and a few other alumni, was furnished to t hose in attendance at the training school. (Marion Huber and Cincinnati held the record-15 members from that Chapter in attendance.)

Jack Erwin presided at all the sessions but was ably assisted by George Croyle, Charley Jarrett and some of the active members who led the discussions.

The sessions were held on Northwestern's down tow n campus in Thorne Hall and the delegates were housed across the street in Abbott Hall, one of Northwester n 's magnificent dormitories. Meals were served cafeteria style and no time was spent on banquets or other frivolous affairs - the delegates were there for business and attendance was almost perfect at each session.

At the F riday afternoon session of Conclave, Colonel Ruppenthal, Chairman of the Jurisprudence Committee presented, and the Conclave adopted the following legislation: {1) Section 1-701 (Constitution) was amended to broaden t he powers and duties of th e National President.

(2) Section 1-1705 (Constitution) was amended to permit associate members to hold office and have all of the rights and privileges of the adopted chapter as well as assume all of the bmdens of membership. Previ-

ously an associate member was ineligible for election to office in his adopted chapter.

(3) Section 2-601c (By-Laws) was amended to provide for an increase in the initiation fee payable to the National Fraternity. At the p revious Conclave (23r d-Purdue-1941) this section had been amended to provide for the compulsory payment of $15.00 by each initiate to cover his TRIAD life subscription. The $15.00 initiation fee had b een in effect since 1924. The original fee of $5.00 was raised to $10.00 in 1919 and to $15.00 in 1924. ( 4) Section 2-601d was reversed to eliminate the rebate of $1.00 per year of the per capita dues to TRIAD life subscribers. This provision required considerable work in the National Office and no longer serves any purpose since every active member, with very few exceptions, is required to pay the TRIAD life subscription fee upon initiation.

(5) New Sections 2-801 and 2-802 (By-Laws) were added providing for the elimination of "Hell Week," paddling and undignified activities. This action conformed to the recommendations of the Interfraternity Conference.

(6) A resolution providing for the remission of the per capita dues of married war veterans was lost.

Conclave adjourned at 3': 35 p . m. and the sessions of the training school were resumed. The final session of the Conclave was called to order by President Kolbe at 11: 22 a. m., Saturday, August 3'1. The report of the budget committee was presented by Chairman Marion Huber and was unanimously adopted. The report fixed the per capita dues at $2.00 per month for each active member or $18.00 for the full year.

The report budgeted funds for the employment of a full-time executive secretary in accordance with the prior action of the Conclave in directing the National Council to employ such an offic ial at the earliest practical moment. The resolution committee then reported and the Conclave adopted the resolutions which follow this report: "1. That they express ¡ for themselves and their respective chapters their appreciation of the efficient and fruitful services so diligently rendered by the National Officers of t he Fraternity, both singly and collectively during the five war years just passed: "2. T o Walter W. Kolbe, our National P resident, w ho during the trying days of the Second World War

ably administered the affairs of the Acacia Fraternity at great personal and financial sacrifice to himself. Special commendation is deserved for materially increasing the net worth of the Fraternity in spite of diminishing revenues and increased costs.

"3. To W. A. Knapp, our National Treasurer, for his capable handling of the funds of the Fraternity.

"4. To John Erwin for his important part in the organizing and conducting of the Officers' Training School, and to Charlie Jarrett, Traveling Secretary, for his part in helping t o organize the Officers' Training School; also to all other members who contributed in any way to the training school.

"5. To Mrs. Edith A. May for her loyalty and unselfish devotion as Headquarters Office Manager. Her promptness, efficiency and sympathetic understanding have made her one of us and one of the guiding lights of Acacia since the last Conclave.

"6. To John H. Walker for reorganizing, setting up and auditing the books of the national offices and his helpful suggestions in .keeping these accounts.

"7. To the Northwestern University, through its administration, and especially to C. L. Longwell, Manager of Abbott _Hall, and his entire staff for furnishing such enjoyable living and meeting quarters.

"Be It Resolved, That the Acacia Fraternity reindorse the principles and teaching of Free Masonry."

The report of the Committee on the Good of the Fraternity was then adopted and follows this report: "1. Resolved, to encourage national field secretaries to visit and take all possible steps toward activating old chapters.

"2. Recommend that regional conferences be held and encouraged for alter nating years, beginning with the year 1947-we will be glad to change that date to 1948 if a Conclave is held next year-the regions to be designated by the National office."

The next order of business was the report of the Nominating Committee.

Secretary Brite and Editor Washington having previously resigned, all five offices on the National Council were vacant. The Committee offered the following names, all of whom were e lected: (Continued on page 7)

National President Kolbe Reports HEN we last assembled, the guns were not roaring but many were loaded and primed. Some of our boys had already joined the colors for a war which we were all promised would never come. As we sit here assembled for the second Officers' Training School and the twenty-fourth biennial Conclave, the war has ceased, but the war has left its mark on the ranks of our brethren. Fifty-five brethren, as we know, have made the supreme sacrifice for us and for this country. Without any exception, the boys who have joined the Chapter Eternal were all outstanding young men, who not only showed promise as fraternity leaders but as leaders in the affairs of their communities.

The war is over, but as far as the schools of higher learning are concerned, there is a new kind of war.

Every university and college has so many applications and so much pressure is being put on them to accept certain applicants that they hardly know which way to turn. Just recently, a university president told me they were turning down in one of their schools, thirty students for every one accepted. Inflation is definitely here for the fraternities. Figuratively speaking, there will be more men clamoring to get into fraternities than could be accepted. You and I never thought we would see that day . Within the past six months I have had requests from four universities asking Acacia to consider establishing a chapter on their campuses. It must be a new deal when school administrations begin seeking new fraternities.

Rushing will not be a problem for any of our chapters unless they proceed to keep their doors barricaded.

At this point, I would like to voice my decided distaste for the term so wrongly used- "rushing." It is my opinion that the NIC-that is, the National Interfraternity Council-should do everything within its power to bar forever the use of the word "rushing" in its connection with fraternities. ''A fraternity should stand on its past record, and if that is good, then it won't be necessary to rush someone into joining. The student would seek membership.

The Twenty-third Conclave assembled in August, 1941, approved a budget which enabled us to establish a central office for the first time since the fraternity was organized. It also provided for a traveling secretary, which we were not able to maintain after 1943. In spite of the fact that

practically all of our chapters were closed and the National F raternity had a very limited income, we did maintain a central office with a full-time office manager. I want to take this opport unity to say a few words of appreciation for the work Mrs. May has done for Acacia during the past four years .

H er efforts in replying to all the boys who wrote in, and watch -dogging national fraternity records, has definitely contributed greatly to keeping our fraternity together.

Naturally, t h e thou ght goes through your minds-"How m u ch of the Endowment or T RIAD L ife Subscription F unds has the Council used for the general operating expenses of the fra ternity du ring the past five years?" I t h ink you should know. The National Council has used not one red cent of the T RIAD L ife Subscription or Endowment F unds for operating the F raternity during the past five years. That is not all. We not only operated on our income each year but we increased our net worth substantially, from $40,764.00 in 1941 to $53,618.00 in J uly, 1946. (Applause) When the war came, we hitched up our belts and cut our garments to fit the cloth. We are proud of this record.

By watching our expenses and not dissipating our assets, we are in financial position today to go full-steam ahead with our organization of chapters, and putting on a campaign for establishing a few new chapters in outstanding schools. I believe this is the time to go all-out in helping our chapters to reactivate. Some of them have done an outstanding job in re-establishing

themselves. Others will need a shot in the arm to get started, and some of them will not respond to any kind of shots. With this thought in mind, we have employed two traveling secretaries whose duties it will be to bring our chapters up to or beyond prewar strength as quickly as possible.

In my report to the Conclave in 1941, I informed them that it was my firm conviction that all Trust, Endowment and Life Subscription Funds should be kept separate from the general funds. I can report to you that this has been done, and every dollar has been transferred and no funds have been re-transferred to the general account for operating expenses.

As previously mentioned, the rna¡ jority of our chapters have been reactivated, but some have not found that leadership which is necessary to do the job. Unfortunately, some chapters whose houses were turned over to the armed forces, or to the schools for use as dormitories, have accepted the idea that they could not ask men to join their chapter unless they had a house. In other words, all they had to sell was a hou se and no fellowship or fraternalism. One chapter of about fou r men got together and built up their membership to twenty-five this last May without any house. They held all their parties in the h omes of their alumns or members.

Those chapters which have not already done so must study very carefully their charges and their budget.

L iving expenses have increased from 33 to 50 per cent, depending upon whose figures you use. Chapters that try to operate with the same charges assessed in 1942 will -be closed before many months have passed. Mater ial costs are greater; the price of labor has increased-at least, the labor we use in our chapter house:;. Again, I want to emphasize, and I know no better way to say it than I did in 1941, and I quote : "I would urge you to formulate a definite policy for billing of house accounts. Every year thousands of dollars are written off in our chapters due to deadbeats among the members.

Don't forget this-those of you who pay your bills eventually pay the carrying charge of those men who do not pay."

And here allow me to speak to the officers and chapter advisers about the misappropriation of funds. I mean just that. Too many of our chapters have had the idea that they could use initiation fees, per capita dues or life sub-

scription funds collected from members to pay the grocery bill or the spring formal. Use of funds for any other purpose than that stated at the time of collection is misappropriation of funds. Initiation fees, per capita dues, or life subscription payments are to be sent to the national fraternity central office as prescribed in our Constitution. I am happy to report that no chapters have increased their indebtedness to the National Fraternity.

All chapters have kept on a current basis.

One man whose name has been mentioned very little, and who is wholly responsible for the excellent reports and records we have today, is John Walker of the Northwestern Chapter.

The fraternity is deeply indebted to him for all that he has done.

At the Twenty-third Conclave I mentioned that our present TRIAD Subscription rates, both annual and the life subscription fee, do not pay for the cost of printing the Magazine. Publishing costs have increased greatly since then. Our income from the life subscription fee amounts to about 60 to 70 cents, whereas our Magazine will cost in excess of $1.50 per subscription to publish. I believe action should be taken to remedy this situation.

Since its inception, our Fraternity has had no reserve for Conclave expenses. Instead, our Conclaves were held and the costs were budgeted for the two succeeding years. I hope before too long our Fraternity will be in a position to set up a full reserve for the Conclaves.

In closing, I want to comment briefly on the general fraternity situation.

Never in the history of fraternities have we had the opportunities which are presented to us today. The majority of our boys will have all or most of their way paid through school and there will be more than double the fraternity prospects than there were in 1942. The wise chapters will use this opportunity to strengthen themselves financially, scholastically and numerically. I want to caution all chapters to select their membership with the greatest of care. You will be scrutinized more carefully than ever by your prospective members. Even though initiation of more men will mean more revenue for the National Fraternity, I cannot wholeheartedly encourage building chapters which will become unwieldy, or initiating members who will not uphold the standards of Acacia. I have always maintained that large chapters do not retain their identity. However, most of our chapters can pledge considerably more

than they did in the past to build them up to full strength. With the increase in the local enrollment or commuting students, all the chapters should plan to pledge a number of these boys if they haven't done so in the past. Our Fraternity has come a long way. We have weathered some very bad years.

With proper guidance, we should retain our position in the Fraternity world. Our best years lie ahead. Let's make the utmost of this opportunity.

In order to accomplish what I have outlined, serious consideration should be given to the following: 1. Employment of a full-time executive secretary sufficiently informed about national and fraternity problems to supervise operations of the Fraternity.

2. To increase TRIAD subscription and TRIAD life subscription fees in order to meet the increased costs.

3. Give serious thought to adjusting initiation fees to offset the increased costs of operations.

4. Continue plan of biennial Officers' Training School.

5. All efforts should be expended to reactivate chapters as quickly as possible.

6. Charter a few new chapters at some of the better universities which are friendly to fraternities.

7. Study and thought should be given to shortening the term of National Officers.

Seven years ago tomorrow I was elected to serve as your President for what I thought would be a four-year term. I firmly believe that seven years is too long to serve, and have said many times that even a four-year term prevents many good men from giving consideration to serving as National Officers. This may be the opportune time to express my political ambitions. I have none. I don't expect to be approached for another term. To put everyone at ease, I will use that famous saying of President Coolidge: "I do not choose to run."

The past seven years have been some of the happiest years of my life.

I have enjoyed my associations with the Fraternity. I wish to express my appreciation to all who have helped to carry Acacia through these trying four years.

G.I.s Have Definite Educational Objectives What do the hundreds of thousands of former Gls now crowding America's institutions of higher learning expect to get out of their college education?

An interesting answer to this question comes from a survey just completed at Northwestern University of the career preferences of 5659 veterans enrolled for full-time study this fall. These veterans comprise 57 per cent of the 9,942 full-time students at the University.

The survey, which was made by Frank S. Endicott, director of Northwestern's placement bureau, reveals that 92 per cent of the veterans have already made vocational or professional choices.

Business as a career is the top choice of these veterans, with 30 per cent selecting this field as a lifework.

The choice in other fields is as follows: engineering and the physical sciences, 22 per cent; law, 11 per cent; medicine, 11 per cent; teaching, 10 per cent; journalism, 5 per cent; dentistry, 5 per cent; and miscellaneous, 6 per cent.

"The most interesting fact in this survey," says Prof. Endicott, "is the unusually large number of veterans who are planning business careers.

"In the last prewar year, 1940-41, the School of Commerce had a fallquarter enrollment of 547 full-time students. This fall, under the impact of veterans seeking admission, the fulltime e.nrollment has increased to 1,786 students, of whom 85 per cent are returned servicemen.

"Even in the College of Liberal Arts, where the educational program is definitely non-vocational, 21 per cent of the veterans who indicated a vocational choice are selecting business as a career."

Prof. Endicott points out that he has no means of knowing whether this trend toward business on the part of the veteran is general among America's institutions of higher learning_ He suspects, however, that it is typical of the situation that exists among the larger universities of the nation.

He urges business leaders to include, in their long-range plans, these veterans who will be entering the business world two, three, and four years from now.

"They will be not only college graduates," he said, "but far more mature and experienced than the typical college graduate, and many of them will be married men with families."

New Faces on the Council

L.H.RUPPENTHAL National P1¡esident Elect Many of you already know our new National President, Lloyd H. Ruppenthal, Kansas '22, for he has been active not only in his own chapter as V. D. in 1922-23, but also in the service h e has given to the National Fraternity as Chairman of the Jurisprudence Committee, 1937-1946. An index of his interest in Acacia is the fact that he has attended all Conclaves since 1921, excepting the one in Atlantic City in 1925. We feel that this must establish some sort of a record.

Brother Ruppenthal was born in Russell, Kansas, December 15, 1901.

After receiving his A.B. degree in 1922, and LL.B. in 1925, both from the University of Kansas, he was in business in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1925-33, after which time he entered the general practice of Law in McPherson, Kansas, where he still lives.

He has served his community in the following capacities: Past Master of McPherson Lodge A. F . & A.M. ; Past District Deputy Gr and Master, Grand Lodge of Kansas, A. F . & A. M. ; Past President, McPher son Chamber of Commerce; Commander, Local Post, Veterans of Foreign Wa rs; Chairman, McPherson County Republican Centr al Committee, and Kansas State Senator, 1941-42, fr om which office he resigned to enter overseas duty.

He was called to active du ty as Captain in June, 1942, and served in the Judge Advocate General's Office and School fro m June to September, 1942.

His distin guish ed recor d of overseas assignments (September, 1942, to November, 1945,) in cludes : S taff Judge Advocate, U . S. Army F orces in Central Afr ica (USAFICA Theater ) and

Africa-Middle East Wing, Air Transport Command from their formation until merger and division, respectively-stationed at Accra, Gold Coast, Br itish West Africa; November, 1943, to India with General Staff Corps, serving as Deputy Chief of Staff, Chief of Staff and Commander of Forward Echelo~; India-China Division, Air Transport Command (The "Hump" run) ; and Deputy Commander, Bengal Wing, ICD, ATC-stationed at New Delhi; Calcutta; Kunming, China ; Dacca, Bengal; and Shanghai. He returned to inactive status as a Colonel, Mar ch, 1946. He holds the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and theater r ibbons with campaign stars.

He is a member of the Council Commandery, Shrine, Sojourners, Elks, Rotary, Kansas State and American Bar Associations and American Legion.

Since it is necessary that the terms of office of all good men must come to an end we are indeed fortunate in having such a man as Brother Ruppenthal to take over the duties of National President and guide Acacia through these very important postwar years. He and the other new officers will be inducted into office in February, 1947.

Readers of the TRIAD will recognize the name of Ray C. Thomas, Indiana '20, our newly elected National Counselor, from an article about him which appeared in the Winter, 1945, issue. A charter member of the Indiana Chapter, his deep interest in Acacia makes him a valuable addition to the National Council.

Brother Thomas was born December 11, 1898, at Alexandria, Indiana.

After graduating from the Alexandria high school in 1917, he served as a private in the U . S. Army for three months during World War I. He entered Indiana University in the fall of 1918, received his A.B. degr ee in 1922 and LL.B. in 1924, and was admitted to the Bar of the State of Indiana in that same year. In 1926 he married Josephine Kelley of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, past president of the Indiana Chapter of Delta Gamma, and began the practice of law in Gary, Indiana, where he still r esides. Their son, J oseph, age 17, is a senior at Horace Mann High School in Gar y .

has a number of hobbies: farming on the old Indiana farm in Dearborn County ; lectures on Latin America; travel; entertaining Acacians and alumni at his town house and also at the farm home; correspondence with the boys in military service. Acacians who should know say his best hobby is telling stories. His home address is 3360 Morrison St., Cincinnati, Ohio.

that an excellent choice has been made in electing him to carry on where Brother Knapp leaves off.

Brother Huber was born May 15, 1897, in Harrison, Ohio, one of eleven children. He very aptly states that there was no race suicide there. After graduating from high school in Harrison, he attended the University of Cincinnati from which institution he received his A.B. and A.M. degrees, the latter with Chemistry and Education as major fields of interest. This work was done in connection with the Teachers College at the university, and the subject of his thesis was "The Reorganization of a College of Education." Further graduate work was also done at the University of Cincinnati.

dearth of teachers for our schools and colleges," Prof. Endicott states.

The veteran is more vocationally minded than the student of five or six years ago, according to Prof. Endicott.

"This can be accounted for by the fact that he is anxious to make up for the time he has spent in military service. Nevertheless, it imposes on our colleges and universities a heavy obligation to see that the veteran is given a general education as well as the specialization for which he is asking.

"Another bright side of the picture is that the veteran, because he has a definite vocational objective in mind, will make a good scholastic record.

This has been the experience of the University during the past year."

Prof. Endicott's survey indicates that the typical veteran at Northwestern is not planning, at least at the present time, on a part-time job to supplement his government subsidy. Only 17 per cent of the veterans indicated they were planning on part-time jobs.

The present enrollment of Northwestern University is by far the largest in its history, consisting of 9,942 full-time students, and 11,876 parttime students who are studying evenings on the Chicago campus.

Prof. Endicott points out that 22 per cent of all veterans with a vocational choice have selected careers in the physical sciences and engineering.

"In the fall of 1940-41, the Technological Institute had an enrollment of 394 students. The present enrollment is 1,038 students, of whom 800, or 77 per cent are veterans.

"Additions from the College of Liberal Arts and the Graduate School bring the number of veterans interested in science and engineering to a total of 1,153.

"It takes five years. to train an engineer, and from eight to nine years to train a research scientist with a doctor's degree. It will therefore take a number of years before these veterans can help in overcoming the present shortage in the field. Nevertheless, the trend is distinctly encouraging."

The survey indicates that 10 per cent of the veterans making a vocational choice plan to enter teaching.

Let Our New Monuments Inspire and Endure

By JAMES EARLE FRASER Distinguished American ScuLptor HE purpose of a memorial," '' Archibald MacLeish has reminded us, "is to make the minds of men remember." The fundamental question arising, then, as we contemplate memorials to heroes of our day is : will they cause the minds of men of generations yet unborn to remember?

The answer is hardly to be found in "living memorials," so-called, because living, they shall some day die. Rather, let us tur n to monuments of beauty fashioned in enduring materials. For monuments are the oldest and the most impressive works of men.

Consider the fitness of the memorial to that which it commemorates.

The men who have retur ned from the war may not desire monuments for themselves, but will wish to see their dead comrades honored. Yet we who have remained at home will wish to honor all our sons and daughters, both the quick and the dead, who have worn their uniforms with honor. Can we do so, however, in but one memorial? I hold that, generally speaking, we cannot-that there should be a difference in our manner of commemorating our dead and veterans which reflects the very difference between life and death itself.

Insensitive to this distinction, many memorial committees are considering stadiums, libraries, recreation halls, swimming pools, bowling alleys, and other utilitarian buildings as war memorials. I do not dispute the need

and value of these structures. I only ask: can any such buildings properly honor the boy who died fighting?

What is it, after all, that we want of a memorial to our war dead? We want it to remind us of great sacrifices made for us. We want it to inspire us to be worthy of those sacrifices. We want to gain from it some of the reverence and awe and elevation one feels in the presence of, say, the massive and magnificent Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Think of some of our truly great monuments. First, the Arc de Triomphe, which I have just mentioned.

Has there been a single utilitarian memorial comparable to that inspiring soldiers' monument?

Consider next the Statue of Liberty.

As in the past so in the future, its colossal scale and wonderful placement in New York Harbor will continue to impress millions of people.

Can you think of any utilitarian monument to equal its message? There is none.

It is spiritual quality, again, that makes the Lincoln Memorial in Washington the beloved national shrine it has become.

Then the Washington Monument.

So vast in scale and so overpowering in visual impact is this sheer shaft that it impresses unforgettably upon the beholder ' the strength and character of the first President of the United States.

It is unity of concept that renders

these monuments great. Free of any utilitarian handicap, they speak their messages clearly, forcefully and at once.

A favorite theme among those who urge the building of "living memorials" is that monuments to heroes of earlier wars have been so poorly done.

While it must be admitted that there are poor monuments in my own country as there are in all others, the generalization is far too sweeping. It ignores such splendid portrait statues as Farragut and Nathan Hale in New York, as the Shaw Memorial in Boston, as the General Lawton figure in Indiana, and as the great standing L incoln in Chicago.

Consider a sheer panel of enduring granite or marble bearing some finely designed lettering. P icture for this simple memorial an ample and beautiful architectural setting.

A memorial to our glorious dead should be erected to live through the ages, remain sacred forever, and be consecrated to the heroic deeds of those who h ave fought and died for the nation's unquenchable desire for freedom.

The religion of the Parthenon is gone, that of the Mayan Temple is lost, but they, with the Pyramids, the Pantheon in Rome, and the Victory of Samothrace, remain proof th at monuments with their great art messages live on as civilizations disapp ear.

American Education Inadequately Financed

They were made by John K. Norton, director of the division of organization and administration of education at Columbia University, who based them on recent national surveys and the latest U.S. census.

Norton said that to remedy these educational ills the annual national expenditure for education must be increased, largely through state and local taxes, from the present 3 billion to 7.5 billion dollars.

"Such an expenditure, representing five per cent of national income, would be a major factor in raising our income of 150 billions to 175 or even 200 billions a year," he said.

He cited U. S . Chamber of Commerce studies showing that a nation's

living standard depends primarily not on natural resources but on its development of industrial and educational resou rces and listing nations with vast natural resources but miserable living standards and others with meager natural resources but high living standards.

He said that a 7.5 billion annual expenditure would permit: High school and college education for the 50 per cent of intelligent y outh now deprived of it.

Schooling of all children in the sixto fifteen-year group, which is expanding because births since 1940 are nearly double of those of the 1930's.

American education is so inadequately financed that one of every two youths of high intelligence prematurely drops from school before reaching college, two million juveniles aged six to fifteen do not attend school, and 4,800,000 children-nearly one of every four-have teachers whose salaries are less than $1,000 a year.

These charges were made before several hundred school superintendents, board members, principals, and other educators in the midwest at the opening session of the annual threeday Conference for School Administrators.

Useful Memorials Best Honor The Hero

HE earth is strewn with monuments which symbolize man's vanity rather than his achievement. Ill conceived, outmoded, and thus the object of derision rather than admiration, they lend force to the words of Marcus Cato: "I would rather have men ask why I have no statue than why I have one."

Rare is the public park without its awkward metal effigy of a soldier; almost as rare is the town square undisfigured by a rearing equestrian statue. Typical of these in its ineptitude is the Jackson atrocity in Washington, D . C. "There had been many criticisms of the prancing horse with its lifted forefeet" writes Margaret Leech in Reveille in Washington.

"Charles Sumner, the cultured Senator from Massachusetts, found the Jackson statue grotesque and was humiliated at having to conduct British visitors past it." Such a memorial is not worthy of Jackson's greatness.

There are three types of monuments: 1. Those which have no value artistically or functionally. Of these I have already cited an example. There are countless more.

2. Those which have beauty without utility. These have great aesthetic influence and are not to be ignored, but other even more important influences will be needed in the postwar world.

3. Those which deserve the name "living memorials." Contributing ac-

tively to the welfare of mankind, these will best represent the spirit and the ideals of those who have fought for us. It is of living memorials I write.

For the young man who went out of a community where opportunity for wholesale recreation was restricted, what more fitting memorial could there be than a fine playground or beautiful community hall where youth of later generations could have their chance to grow up and become useful citizens?

"There could be none finer," answers city after city. Coral Gables, Florida, has already raised more than $50,000 for a war memorial youth center.

Chattanooga, Tennessee, plans a $500,000 park on the Tennessee River. Lake Forest, Illinois, citizens have organized to create a playground honoring a good friend of local young people who was killed in a bomber crash in Iceland.

In Michigan, Kalamazoo and its college aim to build a $3'00,000 sports stadium, football field, field house, and baseball diamond.

For the man who suffered on the battlefield, what better memorial than a hospital or an endowed hospital bed or a medical research project, or a medical center? How better commemorate the sacrifice of the youth who shelved his books and his ambitions than with educational scholarships?

What more appropriate memorial than a crippled-children clinic, or a church center such as the people of

Coventry in England have planned, or a music foundation?

I am not ignorant of what detractors from this kind of memorial describe as shortcomings. We may all wisely heed the counsel of the Christian Science Monitor. Appraising living memorials as "a vast improvement over the motley array of shafts and statuary ranging from works of art to just works of the local iron foundry which have sprung up after earlier wars," it warns city fathers "to plan carefully even in this more imaginative direction. An unused building seems more futile than a statue which isn't supposed to do anything anyway."

Nor do I overlook the importance of making memorial structures conform to the best architectural standards.

My plea is for utility, not against beauty.

Monuments of the past have glorified the warrior and war itself. The sons whom we would memorialize see nothing glorious in war. Let our monuments to them then glorify their sacrifices and their courage. Let them be agencies for future peace, not war.

Understanding must be cultivated by little groups of individuals before it can spread over a nation. Therefore every effort must be made to develop the best type of community life. Such life, I maintain, can be greatly promoted by living memorials. Such memorials will immortalize the youth who are saving democracy. They will exist in the more abundant lives of those who follow them.

"The funds available for conduct of our schools today are even less adequate ¡ than they were in 1940, after changes in price levels are considered," he said. "An alarming shortage of teachers is one result.

"Teachers' salaries during the war have lagged behind the incomes of other groups. Whereas wages and salaries in general have nearly doubled since 1939, ¡teachers' salaries have increased but one-third. Teachers ap-

pear to be the lowest paid group of any size in the United States today except unskilled labor-and the differential here is not large.

"Despite the fact that one teacher in five is substandard and without a certificate, the only professional schools in the country which are still below the prewar level in enrollments are institutions for the training of teachers."

Calling for "a maximum of federal aid where needed and a minimum of federal control because it is not needed," he urged, as a step toward that end, passage of the Hill-TaftThomas bill recently favorably reported by the Senate committee.

Biarritz American University

By JOHN W. PLATTNER, Northwestern '43 IARRITZ American University, one of the most unusual experiments in educational history, was created last year in France out of nothing. The United States Army, faced with a lag in transportation for men returning home, organized the university as one of two in the European Army Educational Program.

These two schools were the apex of the program which was based on the unit command schools. BAU opened its doors on August 20, 1945, to receive approximately four thousand students.

These men and women were selected on the basis of interest, previous education, and availability, with the prerequisite set at a minimum of twelve years of education. It was necessary for each soldier to make personal application to his unit Information and Education officer. Applications were considered when possible by a board of officers and those most deserving were permitted to leave their units for the two-month term at Biarritz.

The school was located in the resort town of Biarritz, France, which is situated in the heart of the Basque country on the Bay of Biscay near the Spanish border. Biarritz had never before had a university and the nearest one was located in Bordeaux. The city itself had a resident population of about 20,000 and had been used before its liberation as a Wehrrriacht rest center.

In prewar years it was a popular summer resort comparable to the Riviera and a great part of Biarritz consisted of privately owned villas and large hotels. These hotels and some of the smaller pensions were requisitioned for student dormitories and villas were used for classrooms and faculty housing. Most of the student living quarters wer e located in close proximity to the wide beach which was popular during the warm months. The usual practice was to assign two enlisted men or officer students to each room in the hotels. Maid service was provided daily and many men slept between sheets for the first time since they had arrived in Europe. In addition to the study facilities provided in each room, a library was available.

First located in the former roulette room at the Municipal Casino, it was moved to the Victoria Hotel during the third term. After the closing of the university center at Shrivenham England, the Biarr itz library acquired the Shrivenham collection and was also in possession of the English Li-

brary of the nearby town of St. Jean de Luz. A severe shortage of textbooks for reference work in the library hampered work but this difficulty was surmounted by the sharing of those books available. Mess halls were provided in the hotels for officers and for enlisted men, French chefs prepared the food, and kitchen police details and work of similar nature in the laundry and cleaning plant run by the university were handled by prisoners of war.

Civilian women and men were employed as table waiters, desk clerks, and chamber maids.

The university provided an unusually complete educational opportunity and maintained sections in agriculture, commerce, education, engineering, music, fine arts, liberal arts, journalism, and science. A complete counseling program was in effect and textbooks were issued by the university book store-unique in the fact that no money ever changed hands there. The university hospital service was provided by the 8th Field Hospital in St. Jean de Luz. Complete Post Exchange and postal facilities were furnished. During the third term the American Red Cross opened a popular doughnut bar in the Hotel Metropole. Administrative work was carried out by the regularly assigned station complement and students were free from all military formations. Classes began at eight o'clock Monday through Friday and extended through the day as at any college. The student load was fixed at fifteen hours per week or three courses per term, all courses were elected from a list of

over 250, and could be taken in any section of the university. Certificates were awarded at the end of each term.

A limited number of honor students were held over at the end of the first and second terms to attend the following term. At the beginning of the third term Biarritz was the only university center in Europe and at that time had an attendance of 2,000. The faculty was composed primarily of civilian professors on leave of absence from civilian colleges and universities chosen primarily for teaching ability rather than a research record. Some Army officers and enlisted men with suitable qualifications completed it.

There were numerous opportunities for recreation. The university obtained the Chiberta Country Club near Biarritz and the local course for those students who desired to play golf and transportation was maintained every day in the week. Students also had the use of the local tennis courts and several hundred bicycles were provided for short trips to the surrounding country or for errands in the town itself. The biggest attraction was the large beach which was popular during the first two terms while the weather was suitable. The university speech section ran the radio station, "WBAU," which broadcast a full schedule of live, network, recorded, and transcribed programs. The University Theater presented four plays each term which compared favorably with professional work. One motion picture theater was

Concerts, presente~ m the Music Hall of the Municipal Casmo and open both to students and citizens of Biarritz, were sponsored by. the Franco-Allied Goodwill Committee.

Frequent lectures were also given on a wide variety of subj ects. Dances were held at the recreation center several times a week for students and their guests. Ping-pong and bridge games could be found in most hotel lobbies. The university also operaterl several bars for students in which French liquor supplies were served.

Perhaps the most unique feature of life at Biarritz was the opportunity to take advantage of the numerous sightseeing and field trips offered. ~e university chaplains sponsored tnps through the picturesque Basque country n earby. Catholic students . were able to visit the world-famed shrme at Lourdes. Skiing trips were organized to the Pyrenees and the engineering sections visited the hydro-electric plants in the vicinity. The city of Bayonne was only a short ride by trolley car and numer ous students visited it. St. Jean de Luz, a p1cturesque fishing village, was a short ride by bicycle along the ocean. History classes traveled to Toulouse and Carcassonne over the weekend to view the famous medieval city. These trips were interesting, educational, and an opportunity which would not be equalled at any comparable university in the United States.

Biarritz was acknowledged to be the brightest spot in F rance for FrancoAmerican relations. Students were permitted to bring guests to dinner at the Ar my mess halls and the university chaplains sponsored a pr ogram of visits to the messes by children of the local orphanages. Candy was collected from the students at the PX for distribution to these orphanages and the agriculture section undertook the planting of a complete orchard at the old people's home in St. Jean de Luz as a project. Concerts were given by the university band and orchestra for the people of the area and the students.

These were well attended. The program of exchange students was h ighly successful. French civilian students of Biarritz were permitted to attend classes and the United States and the B ritish Armies exchanged students.

American soldiers studied at the British University of the Rhine at Gottingen; British students were warmly welcomed at Biarritz. Several students from the arm y of the Netherlands attended the university as well as French army officers. Exchange visits by the faculties and students of BAU and

Bordeaux University were arranged.

This program brought about closer understanding between students of the various nations. At the end of the third term the local hospital was presented with approximately one million francs with which to build a new wing and equip it and a suitable plaque was designed by the art department to be affixed to the wall of this structure when it is completed. Thus a living symbol of the appreciation of the students will be per petuated for the good of the people of the city of Biarritz.

Biarritz American University came to a close with the end of the third term. Its mission had been accomplished in brilliant fashion.

Wuest Attends Nuernberg Trials Palace of Justice Nuernberg, Ger many August 18, 1946 Dear Brothers: So much has occurred since last wri ting to you that I would like to bring you up to date on what's what with me.

When I returned to Fort Bliss after m y leave in Cincinnati, I found that I had been alerted fo r overseas shipment to the ETO and would leave about the first of July. Leaving Jessie and the children in Quarters 7 at Bliss, I went to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, arriving there on July 6. Before I left Bliss, I received a telegram from the Adjutant General of the Army that, pending confirmation by the Senate, I had been appointed a Major, CAC, in the regular ar my, which was quite a surprise to me since only 370 of the 9900 new appointments were in the grade of Major. I did not ship out of Kilmer until July 18, so I had two week-ends of sight-seeing and baseball in New York City.

We embarked from Staten Island on the U. S. Army Transport George Washington for Bremerhaven, Germany. The George Washington was built by the Ger mans in 1908, and our government took it over during World War I and used it as an army transport. It will accommodate 450 officers comfortably, and we had nearly 2300 officers on board.

Our first land sighted was Land's End, England, and we went through the English Channel taking on an English pilot at Dover. The white cliffs of Dover made a pretty sight as seen from our ship. F r om Dover on we took a varied and twisted course, generally following the English coast line in the lane that has been swept clear of mines. Not quite clear, however, since a ship some distance behind us hit one.

While it did not sink the ship, it didn't do it any good. Our cour se took us well up into the North Sea and then south int o Bremerhaven. Before entering the harbor, we picked up a German pilot.

We docked the evening of July 28 and went on shor e the next mor ning, boarding a 3r d Class train-hard, wooden seats-for Bamberg, about 350 miles south. It took 25 hours to make the trip. As we passed through Bremen, Verden, Hannover and Schweinfurt, we could see the devastation done

by Allied planes and ar tillery. At Bamberg we were quarter ed in buildings built to house a Panzer division.

The officers' club was particularly fine.

After a week at Bamberg, I was

sen t to the h eadquar ters of the 3rd Army located in the ancient city of Heidelberg which was untouched by bombing. I understand that there was an agreement that if the Germans did not bomb Oxford, we would leave Heidelberg alone. I lived at the beautiful Schloss Hotel on a mountain above the city. Here it was that Hitler and Goering used to come to wine and dine and enjoy the beautiful view from the windows of the hotel. Within easy walking distance is famous Heidelberg Castle, an enormous stone building, or rather series of ~uildings connected together. Parts of the castle are mor e than 1000 years old, and a large section was erected in 13'00. A deep moat, now dry, surrounds the castle. I took a conducted tour (cost lj 2 mark-5c) which proved to be extremely inter esting.

Heidelberg is a city that makes you think of light opera, music, drinking and dancing. Its streets are filled with small shops. Many dress in Bavarian costume. Many excellent officers' clubs are here, and its fine hotels are now taken over by the army as billets. Orchestras play during meals. (Meals cost us 25 or 35 cents) . Fine linens and silverware are on the table. Haircuts are 5c, shampoos 10c, etc. In fact, you can get a haircut, shampoo, hair tonic, shoe shine and a manicure by a blond fraulein-all for 50c! (For a chocolate bar you can have the fraulein.)

I am now at Nuernberg the former holy of holies of the Nazis, and am living at the Grand Hotel formerly used as headquarters for Hitler and his rats. In the evening there is dancing and entertainment in the Marble Room, as its name implies built entirely of marble. Six enormous cr ystal chandeliers light up the room. The headwaiter wears full dress, the floor show is changed twice a week, and the orchestra is outstanding. All for free.

If you feel generous you can give the waiter a few cigarettes for a tip. A cigarette is worth (to him) about 35c and cost us 3/ 10 of a cent.

This is a world where the cigarette,

the chocolate bar, and the bar of soap are mediums of wealth. Money means little or nothing to the Krauts since there is little that they can buy with it. Fortunes have been made in the black market. A carton of cigarettes which cost us 45c will bring 1000 marks or $100 on the black market in various cities. With the new currency control methods which prevent exportation of dollars in excess of pay received, the black market has been dealt a serious if not mortal blow.

My present assignment here is with the Office of the U. S. Chief of Counsel, who, you probably know, is the Honorable Justice Jackson of the U. S. Supreme Court. The International Tribunal is the agency which lS conducting the trials of the Nazi bigwigs.

The main trial is about over, and after the verdict is announced the subsequent trials of lesser Nazis will begin, provided, of course, the verdict is "Guilty." Justice Jackson, now in the States, will return for the handing down of the verdict.

I attended a recent morning session of the trial. It is quite an impressive sight. I had a good seat in the Press section. To the right on a high bench overlooking everything are the eight members of the Tribunal from the four powers. Heading the Tribunal is Lord Justice Lawrence, Lord Justice of the Court of Appeal, England. The U. S. members are Francis Biddle, former U. S. Attorney General, and John J. Parker, Court of Appeals. Justice Jackson is the prosecuting attorney for the U . S. To the left facing the Tribunal sit the Nazis-Goering, Hess, Ribbentrop, Keitel, etc. They don't look like supermen to me-more like a bunch aÂŁ German tradesmen. Goering is wearing a gray suit which fits him loosely (he has lost a lot of weight). Hess does not appear to have them all. Keitel, former German Army Chief of Staff, is the only one in uniform and looks every inch a soldier.

Every seat in the courtroom has earphones and a four-point switch. As the witness on the stand gives his testimony it is immediately translated into the three other languages. You select whichever language you can understand-German, French, Russian or English.

Air Cruise to South America

By PAUL AMUNDSON, Har,ard '15 HE writer has, for years, been intrigued with the idea of an air cruise of the entire South American continent, going down one coast and flying back up the other coast.

This has not been possible for several years past. And I decided to avail myself of the first conducted air cruise of South America, put on by the American Express Company and the Pan American Airways since the war.

Independent travel has many advantages, but not at this particular time, everything having been more or less upset and dislocated by the war.

An American Express conducted tour is the answer.

At any time, travel to South America has been difficult. There is an extreme amount of "red tape" to go through in arranging for the trip.

Whether or not this situation will be changed to any extent in years to come, remains to be seen.

It used to be comparatively easy to arrange to go to Europe. The chief requirement was a passport. Some countries required visas. But for South America, it is not only necessary to have a passport and then a visa for each country, but a health certificate and a police certificate are required.

Brazil is not satisfied with the general health certificate showing that one has been recently vaccinated against small pox, and is free from contagious diseases, but another special form of health certificate, which must be duly notarized. It is necessary to be fingerprinted and to carry a certificate showing the finger prints. Some of the countries require special thumb finger prints. It often takes an hour or more to go through the immigration, police, and custom rituals, at the various airports.

One of the chief difficulties of South Amer ican travel is the question of language. Spanish is spoken almost exclusively in every South American country excepting Brazil, where it is Portuguese.

Most of the South Amer icans do not speak any English. At a large hotel like the O'Higgins at Vina del Mar, out from Santiago and Valparaisowhich is probably the best known hotel in South America-it is amazing how difficult it is for a guest who speaks only English to get a message across. Anyone versed in Spanish will find travel in South America much easier and a great deal more interesting.

PAUL AMUNDSON Harvard '15 The members of our cruise party were to meet in Mexico City. I had come to Florida, after Christmas. So, in starting out for Mexico City, I flew to Havana first and made a stop-over.

When I was there in the spring of 1942, the place was practically without tourists, and the big fine Hotel Nacional-the largest in the tropicswas starving to death. This year the place is packed to overflowing, the prices are outrageously high, and the management is fully as independent as any hotel proprietor in New York, Chicago or Miami, if that were possible.

Mexico City has been having a big boom. Its prices in many instances, are about twice what they were when I was there about four years ago. However, you can buy almost anything in Mexico City, wherever they get the stuff from. There is a tremendous amount of building going on in Mexico City; entire blocks have, in some instances, been torn down and are being rebuilt. The building motif is very modernistic.

The travel group in the air cruise party which started from Mexico City, was made up of ten people, plus a cruise conductor. It was a very unusual bunch of people-all were mature, interesting and seasoned travelers. Two live in San Francisco ; two are from New York City, and the other six from Massachusetts. The cruise conductor was from Philadelphia, having recently been a captain in the Army-he had previously been in South America and he has worked for American Express for many years.

In flying southward from Mexico City, I was surprised to find how very mountainous is all of Southern Mexico and practically all of Guatemala.

Guatemala is a beautiful country, and it has not yet been spoiled by tourists. The airport at Guatemala City is one of the finest I have ever seen. The coffee ser ved on the house at the airport is in a class by itself. I had lots of good coffee in South America, particularly Brazil, but I would just as soon have the Guatemalan product any time.

We stopped off for a few days in Guatemala, and we went on a most interesting week-end trip to Chichicastenango, out in the Guatemala Mountains, a couple of hundred miles from Guatemala City. The scenery on the trip is as varied and as beautiful as could be desired-there is one place on the mountain road where you can see about eight volcanos and mountain ranges at one time. We were at that point around sunset, which added greatly to the effect. This mountain auto road took 15 years to build and represented a real engineering triumph. One of the lakes we saw on the trip was Lake Attilan, which is a grand sight-reminded me of Lake Como in Italy.

We spent a couple of nights at the Mayan Lodge, which had a very attractive setting, and was one of the most interesting hotels I ever stopped at. Located in a small place, the hotel had wonderful furnishings, fireplaces, etc., and even a Mayan Indian boy servant thrown in for good measure.

The Mayans were having a religious festival on the Sunday we wer e at Chichicastenango in their four hundred year old church-it was something different than I had ever seen.

And in the afternoon of that day we visited their mar ket, the largest openair market in Guatemala.

On our way to South America, we stopped overnight at Panama City. It is pretty general knowledge that the Panama Canal Zone has always thrived on vice . I wouldn't say, from a casual observation, that the war has improved conditions any. As a matter of fact, I would h esitate to be even in the downtown section of the city after midnight, without a bodyguard.

Ecuador is clearly one of the most backward of the South Amer.ican republics. Guayaquil has a new modern hotel, but the place has had no occasion to entertain North Americans,

16 and hardly a word of English is spoken by anyone connected with the hotel.

The city is the largest in Ecuador; it has a population of a couple of hundred thousand. It is quite a seaport and does a lot of shipping. The population of Ecuador is largely Indiansome of the Indians are reputed to be head hunters. The climate is surprisingly cool in view of the nearness to the Equator-there is a cold, ocean current coming up from the Antarctic, which cools off the place.

Lima, Peru, is a very modern and up-to-date city of considerably over a half-million population. It has big, fine modern buildings, and looks like a real city in every sense of the word. It is a combination of the historic old and the most modern new. Flowers and all the tropical setting, are marvelous.

The auto drive through the Mira Flores section of the residential district is picturesque and beautiful. The Lima Country Club is supposed to be one of the finest in the world. It is more beautiful than any country club I have seen anywhere in the United States or in fact, anywhere else. Our stay in Lima was more limited than I should have preferred.

The airplane trip down the West Coast of South America gets pretty monotonous. There is a strip of territory along the coast of Peru and Chile which is nothing but a mountainous desert, almost hideous to behold. This stretch of desert, which I speak of, is supposed to be about 50 miles wide and over 3,000 miles long -longer than the distance between New York City and Los Angeles.

When we landed at the airport at Santiago, Chile, we had a very easy time with customs-our baggage was not inspected at all. The local American Express representative was a good friend of the Customs people. We were surprised because we had all had difficulty in getting our visas for Chile -as a matter of fact, we spent about half a day in Mexico City with the Chilean Consul there, to make the arrangements.

Santiago, like Lima, is a large, modern up-to-date city, with fine buildings, elaborate government structures and public par ks galore. It was interesting to note that Santiago has built an underground parking place in the middle of town underneath one of the parks -some of our own cities like Boston, which need city parking places so badly, could learn from Santiago and other South American cities. We North Americans are inclined to think we have a monopoly on everythingthat is one of the best reasons for taking a trip around South America.

Santiago has one of the finest race tracks I have ever seen. Gambling

runs riot all over South America. I guess every country there has authorized lotteries. There are race tracks and casinos everywhere, although the stakes played for generally seem to be in smaller denominations than those in various parts of the U. S . A. like Miami, Fla. Vina del Mar, which is a couple of hours train ride out of Santiago, is supposed to be a very fashionable oceanside resort. It is attractive, but from my standpoint, greatly over-rated. It does not commence to stack up with many of our own seaside places. The Casino there is one of the big attractions-! never have seen so many gamblers assembled under one roof anywhere else in the world.

One of the things for which Chile is famous is its seafood, including its lobster which I think is a little stringy and'tough. Anyone will go a long ways to beat our lobsters from the State of Maine.

On the Sunday we visited Vina del Mar, it was Derby Day at the racetrack. The crowd was very colorful.

Among others who attended the Derby was the Vice-President of P'eru-'-a very pompous and distinguished looking old gentleman. When he marched around, accompanied by a large delegation of brightly - uniformed body guards and military, the band struck up some good tunes and we had a glimpse of officialdom in South America in all its glory.

Valparaiso is one of the oldest-appearing cities in South America. It is not particularly attractive to look at, but it is probably closer to representing the real South America than the

newer and flashier cities over on the East Coast. Valparaiso is located on a number of hills overlooking the ocean and is a great shipping centerit does a surprising amount of maritime business, considering its extremely inadequate docking facilities.

The people of Chile look very much like the inhabitants of any of our _ North American cities. There are some very fine shops in Santiago, but there were many stores that seemed to handle a greater variety of articles than some of our North American drug stores like Liggett's and Walgreen's.

The lake country of Chile and Argentina has everything, in the way of scenery-! believe it has the greatest variety of scenery in one section than exists anywhere in the world. Parts of it reminded me of almost every place that I have ever been. Part of it was just like going up through the fjords of Norway-some of it was like the scenery on the inland passage on the Pacific Coast, from Seattle to Alaska. Other parts resembled theCanadian Rockies and our own American Rockies in our several Western states.

In fact, the Chilean lake country is a combination of Switzerland, Alaska, Norway, the lake regions of Italy and about any other place that any of us have ever visited.

This lake district has some magnificent hotels. The Llao Llao Hotel, in a town of the same name, is as fine a resort hotel as you run into almost anywhere, and has beautiful scenery from any room on any side of the hotel. The dining room does not open for dinner until 9:30 at night. The farther south one gets in South America, the later they eat dinner at night. They have tea about five in the afternoon.

Civilian air travel across the Andes is practically non-existent now-it is still pretty well restricted to the military. So we had to take a two-day train trip through Patagonia--completely flat country all the way-in going from the lake country on the Argentine side over to Buenos Aires. I never knew there could be so much flat country.

Along the entire route through the flat Argentine plains were cattle and sheep, and then more cattle and sheep¡ -some of the finest animals I ever set eyes upon. This train trip is very dusty and particularly in warm weather-there is only one train trip that I have ever taken that compares in dust, and that was one twenty-four hour trip one time on the then soft coal burning Illinois Central Railroad from New Orleans to Chicago. On that occasion, when I got to Chicago, my white shirt was so dirty I hesitated to send it out, even to a Chinese laundry.

The Triad, Fall, lf!46 ern and up-to-date city. Its lay-out is much like that of any of our large North American cities. As a matter of fact, most of the big South American cities are quite similar to our own, except as to the almost universal red tile roofs in South America. Buenos Aires has a population about the size of Philadelphia-in fact, I guess there is some question which of the two cities is the larger.

This city has fine public and private buildings and many fine parks. B. A. is full of sidewalk cafes, on the European order. That is also the situation in Montevideo and Rio. Never have I been in any city where the population, as a whole, seemed so well-dressed.

That was tr ue of the women who appear in public there, if not kept at home, according to the old Spanish idea. The men on the streets, in the cafes and everywhere, wore suits of rich materials, well tailored, and in excellent taste. The ties, for instance, while in many cases of bright colors, were usually in much more fitting contrast to the suits than the supposedly gorgeous tie creations which, during the past year, have been so much the rage in New York, Hollywood and Miami.

The Argentines are extremely money-minded. It is certainly true that "money talks" in Buenos Aires. In fact, if you want anything done or anything special all over South America, it is surprising how much a little money will accomplish-it's a good old South Amer ican custom, to "grease the palm."

The cost of living has been going up all over South America. In Chile everything has just about doubled in the last year or two. In Argentina prices are comparable to New York City or perhaps higher. More goods are available, if you want to pay the price. This included white shirts and pajamas, which could be obtained in B. A. but only at sky-high prices.

Argentina seems to have plenty of everything. We hear a lot about how much food is wasted in the United States. Our writers would learn much from visiting Argentina.

People stopping at the Plaza Hotel in Buenos Aires usually have breakfast sent up to their rooms. Some a r e content with the limited Continental breakfast, but most of us men have to have more food , so we order up. In asking for a large glass of fruit juice, a big bowl of fresh fruits would usually come along, too. If I ordered one egg, I always got two. There would be enough toast, bread and rolls for a good-sized family. I would ask for a couple of pieces of bacon, but I would get ten or twelve. If I ordered a small piece of broiled ham, up would

17 come a half dozen big slabs of it, fried in enough of its own grease to take care of the fat requirements of an entire family for some time. You ought to see the plate full of butter pats the waiter would bring in. I don't know whether the help uses up all this surplus food that goes back from the table, or whether it is wasted.

Argentina shows no signs of cooperation with even the other South American countries, let alone North America. Athletes from Argentina, going over to nearby Uruguay sometimes are not permitted to take their athletic equipment along.

There are all kinds of restrictions in going in and out of Argentina. For

ROY C. CLARK Chairman Conclave Nominations Committee, formerly National Treasurer and Northwestern Adviser. example, I bought some pieces of silverware in B. A. to take to the U. S. They are still in Argentina, although I recently received a refund. It was interesting to hear one of the guides in Rio later say, "The Argentines hate us Brazilians and we Brazilians hate the Argentines."

We didn't see very much political disturbance in B. A. I guess the excitement took place before and after we were there. One of the most abominable practices all over South America, is to plaster political slogans in hard-to-get-off black paint, on both public and private buildings. Buenos Aires was full of this, the slogan usually being "Vive Peron." Sometimes the buildings were marked up right under the eyes of the local police, who would seem to be in sympathy.

The entire East Coast of South America seems destined for tremendous growth and development. Nothing will probably stop this in years to

come, regardless of unstable gover nments or anything else. One of the amazing things about South America is the extent to which it is still undeveloped. However, it has tremendous resources, and seemingly unlimited possibilities.

Uruguay is a very interesting country. The entire republic has only about two million people. About one third of these live in Montevideo, which looks much bigger. The country-side of Uruguay is much like that of many of our own states-the country is much more rolling than so much of Argentina. Cattle and farming are the chief industries. I had a fine auto ride of about 140 miles through the Uruguayan countryside on a stretch of paved road as fine as we have anywhere in the U . S. Montevideo is an amazing city, with the most beautiful white buildings everywhere, beautiful parks and country clubs, and numerous wonderful bathing beaches close to the city. Montevideo is the cleanest big city I have ever seen. Buildings in Montevideo that were put up 15 to 20 years ago, look almost as white as if they had been erected yesterday. I was told that the city has a law requiring some contraption to be attached above the chimneys to absorb the soot. Boston and many other North American cities could learn much from Montevideo in cleanliness.

South America is so large that any North American visiting the continent below the border is in for a lot of surprises. Brazil, for instance, is larger than the entire United States, plus the state of Texas.

After leaving Montevideo, the next city at which we stopped was Sao Paulo, in Brazil. Until I started to plan the South American trip last fall, I hardly knew that Sao Paulo existed.

Certainly I did not realize that Sao Paulo is a large, modern city, with about a million' and a half population.

It claims to be the coffee capital of the world. It looks like it is having a more mushroomed development than the other South American cities. It did not seem to have many places of historical interest to point out to the sightseeing tourists . . We did not visit Santos which is also a large Brazilian city of over half million population.

Next on our list was Rio, which all of us had been looking forward to with much interest. Flying into the Rio harbor is a thrilling experience. Rio claims to have the most beautiful harbor in the world, and I cannot say otherwise. It would take some very extravagant adjectives to describe the place.

Rio is laid out differently than most of the other South American cities. It

18 covers a great deal of territory, instead of being concentrated in a limited area, as are so many of the others.

While nature has done a wonderful job for Rio, I am not sure to what extent man has improved the place. Rio will, no doubt, look more attractive when it completes all the unfinished buildings.

All South America, in general, and Rio in particular, was apparently having a tremendous building boom just before the war started. Any quantity of buildings-large apartment houses, hotels, office buildings and whatnot were in process of construction. All this had to be stopped when it became impossible to import building materials from both Europe and the U. S. From my window at the Copacabana Palace Hotel at Copacabana Beach, I could see the shells of at least four large unfinished apartment buildings.

In walking around a small radius in the vicinity I counted at least twenty of these huge structures that were once in process of construction. That same situation prevailed throughout a lot of Rio and for that matter, in all the other South American cities I visited.

It is summertime in Rio, and I don't mean maybe. Much as I like warm weather, the Rio climate did not appeal to me at this time of the year. The humidity is high and the sun was so hot that the bathers were in swimming only early in the morning and late in the afternoon and evening.

-Quite different from our U. S. beaches, Copacabana Beach was deserted around the middle of the dayanyone out in the sun at that time would fry. There was no circulation of air even at the beach, where the hotel was located, even in the night time, and it was very difficult to sleep. The much advertised Copacabana Hotel ought to be air-conditioned but it ' isn 't. It would be more comfortable if it had the lattice-effect doors or transoms over the hotel doors, b~t it doesn't have. The Brazilians claimed that it was hotter than it had been in over 40 years in Rio, and I don't doubt it. Rio is supposed to be mild all year.

The best time, perhaps, to visit Rio, from the standpoint of climate is their springtime, which corresponds with our September, October, and November.

Many a North American tourist :nho _has visited Emope and the Tr opICs_, IS w~ll accustomed to having to drmk mmeral water instead of the usual_city ~ater. Even in large, Metropolitan R10, the city water is not fit drains is sometimes almost reddish in <hains is smetimes almost reddish in color, and there are signs posted in the rooms not to drink the water. Some-

one has a good thing in the sale of the mineral water for which they get a quarter for a small bottle-and one has to consume a considerable number a day, in view of the climate.

Another interesting thing about South America, from our standpoint, is that in so many places they do not pasteurize the milk. Rightly or wrongly, we had been advised not to use the milk, and I didn't drink any of it anywhere in South America. In various places we also had to be very careful as to what vegetables we partook of.

As far as I could see, most South Americans eat too much-certainly they consume too much meat, which was very plentiful. Butter was also available in quantities, and generously served, particularly in Argentina. In Chile and Argentina, people drink a lot of native wine.

The air trip from Rio to Miami is a lot of flying in one trip. We were routed out at 4: 00 a. m. in Rio and took off about 6:00. We flew all day over the Brazilian forest to Belem, where we stopped overnight. We were awakened at 3:45 the next morning and were flying by 5:30. We went to the Port au Spain; San Juan in Puerto Rico; Camaguey in Cuba; and landed in Miami about eleven in the evening.

Two hours have to be added to that because -of changes in time in setting back our watches twice on the trip.

When we were first able to see the bright lights of Florida, my heart literally leaped for joy. Someone in the plane shouted, "Miami!!" One could hear a Naval officer, who had been on foreign duty for three years, whisper to himself, "U. S. soil." Landing in the U. S. from a trip like this is just as _ exciting an experience as getting sight of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor after a trip to Europe. As interesting as it is to visit foreign countries, I'll still take "the good old U. S. A." for a steady diet.

The above resume does not even scratch the surface about any of South America, concerning which many whole books have been, and will be, written. I have aimed only to make a few personal observations which, I hope, will be found interesting to those who peruse this.

Miami has had the biggest season ever. I never saw, in all the fifteen odd years that I have been coming to Miami, from time to time, the place so crowded, as it was when I got back here the latter part of February. While I hold no brief for prices and many other things here, I must say that a lot of the material appearing in the magazines recently is largely imagination. Anyway, the climate here is wonderful, and it's a great place to spend March and April, as well as January and February.

Pan American gives the impression that it is going to be possible to fly from Miami to Rio in much less time and at a less tiresome pace than above indicated. They now use the DC-3 planes.

Before they can use the larger planes however, Rio has to bulld a new air~ port, and that is going to take ' a good deal of time. Rio's airport is right in the heart of town, and is very small.

I marvel how we ever were able to land or take off there, even in a DC-3 without hitting some of the othe; planes.

Senator Capper is 81 The oldest man in the United States Senate, Senator Arthur Capper, Republican, Kansas State, celebrated his eighty-first bir thday July 14. He has served more than twenty-seven years in t he Senate. Only one other member has longer ser vice in the Upper House, Senator McKellar, Democrat, of Tennessee, who has held his seat for twenty-nine years.

The slender Kansan told a reporter that h e still was in good health and observed the same working hours he has for years.

"These are days for rejoicing rather than for sorrowing," he declared. "It is going to take time for us to pull out of the hole in which we were bound to find ourselves when the war ended .

But w e are going to pull out."

Senator Capper was the guest of honor at a breakfast given for him a t the Shoreham Hotel by the Northeast Council of Citizens' Associations of Washington.

Mrs. F r ederick B. Mumford, 76, wife of the dean emeritus of the school of a,griculture of the University of Missouri, was injured fatally and her husband was injured critically October 14 in an automobile accident on U . S. highway No. 40 five miles west of Wentzville, Mo. Their motor car overturned, caught five and burned.

Mrs. Mumford suffered fractures of both legs, internal and head injuries and shock. Dean Mumford had a fractured right leg, multiple cuts and bruises.

The state highway patrol said passers-by saw the car lying on its side and dragged Dean Mumford, who is 78, and his wife from the wreckage.

Cause of the accident was not determined. The patrol said tire marks indicated the car had been driven about 200 feet alon~ the shoulder of the highway before it crashed into a culvert.

Dr. Mumford is a member of Missouri chapter, '11, and was, for many years, an active alumnus.

Mid-West Honored Kenney L. Ford, Kansas State '24, was named president-elect of the American Alumni Council at the convention of the Council held last summer in Amherst, Massachusetts. This is the first time such an honor has come to the mid-west.

Brother Ford is chapter adviser to the Kansas State Chapter; alumni secretary at Kansas State College; and past commander of Pearce-Keller Post of the American Legion ( 1932-1933).

Lincoln D. (Line.) Jones, Michigan '22, for the past five years has been Distr ict Manager for the American Meat Institute in nine eastern states.

Changes Ahead In Industrial Education Dr. Clement C. Williams, Kansas '19, a consultant in engineering and industrial education, believes that "in the era ahead, industry will have to develop quite a new and more adequate scheme of personnel training and of personnel relations. 'Reconversion' is altogether too simple a concept; it is a nostalgic expectation of returning to the status quo ante, much like President Harding's idea of 'back to normalcy.' Too much has happened in the world to permit so elementary a solution. I believe that industry will undergo a systematic renovation and remove the problems of personnel relations from the fitful fortunes of the political system to be settled accountantly in the economic system of social organization. A more adequate scheme of industrial education will be necessary for that purpose, and our program of public education will have to be remodeled accordingly."

Brother Williams has headed the civil engineering departments at the Universities of Kansas and Illinois, has also been dean of engineering at the University of Iowa, and was president of Lehigh University for nine years, from which post he resigned in 1944.

Tribute Paid to Oscar C. Hull The TRIAD for J anuary, 1945, carried an article about Oscar C. Hull, Kansas '09, who passed on November 23, 1944. In the Reports of the American Bar Association, Vol. 70, 1945, Headquarters Office 1140 North Dearborn S treet, Chicago 10, appears a Memorial to this distinguished brother. This reads in part: "To the members of the bar, he was known as a lawyer who enjoyed a large and successful practice, but to w hom the development of the law in the public interest and making the bar an effective agency for public good, were closest to his heart. He was called to many high offices in the bar of his state and in this Association-as chairman for many years of the Legal Aid Committee of the Detroit Bar Association, president of the Michigan State Bar Association, member of the General Council of this Association, member of the old Executive Committee, chairman of the Conference of Bar Association Delegates, chairman of the Commerce Committee for several years, and member of the House of Delegates from its organization to his last illness - and through the years exercised a leadership in holding his profession to the highest ideals of integrity and honor that will be his lasting monument. Always, he gave freely of his time and means "For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance And the good that I can do."

Harry W. Smith, Jr. , Missouri '37, another graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, is now owner and editor of The Altadenan, a newspaper at Altadena California. ' Miss Betty Jean Sundvahl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Sundvahl of Glenview, Illinois, and Carl W. Simonsen, Northwestern '42, were united in marriage on November 3, 1945, at Rogers Park Baptist Church in Chicago. The Rev. Ben F. Garmer officiated. Carl and Betty are now at home at 6225 Hermitage in Chicago.

Professor Walter A. Baude, Cincinnati '29, associate professor of commerce, College of Engineering and Commerce at the University of Cincinnati, has become seriously ill since his return from the army. We are all hoping for his speedy recovery.

Brother Baude left UC in June, 1942, and served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army's finance department.

He was overseas from November, 1942, until June, 1945. He landed at Oran, Algeria, North Africa a few weeks following the Allied invasion there and plunged into the task of international money exchange. He is reluctant to estimate the amount of funds entrusted to his unit's care, but the sum was not "hay."

In June, 1945, he flew to Miami, Florida, for a 90-day period. He was then attached to the Fifth Service Command at Columbus, Ohio, supervising payments at separation centers and hospitals.

Two wartime acquisitions gained from his service are acquaintance with the currency of 14 nations and a ready recognition of counterfeit money. He wears the Rome-Arno battle star, and received a letter of commendation for his services in World War II. Banana skins fried in cold cream taste like French-fried potatoes "when you are real hungry," according to Merle S. Robie, Cornell '37, who frequently was hungry during the three years he passed in Los Banos internment camp in the Philippines as a civilian prisoner of the Japanese. He hasn't liked bananas or their skins since his liberation.

Brother Robie is back with his former employer, The Columbian Rope Co. in Davao, Philippine Islands.

Ralph W. Hammett Harvard '22 whose article, The An~y and Art, ap~ peared in the Spring, 1946, issue of the TRIAD, has been awarded the Palmes Academiques decoration by the French minister of education "in appreciation for help given the French government in saving historical monuments, fine arts and archives during the war." He was also notified that he had been appointed an officer of the French Academy.

One of the star players in the Ohio State line-up against the Southern California Trojans in the gridiron battle on October 5, was Thomas L . James Ohio '42, ~eet halfback on the Buckey~ team. Fmal score: Ohio State 21¡ Southern California 0. '

George E. Cogger, Michigan '41, was discharged from the Army Air Corps in December, 1945, with the rank of Captain, and was in the Safety and Traffic Engineering Department of the Chicago Motor Club for a time. He expected to take a course in traffic engineering at Yale University, beginning in September.

To Try War Criminals Harold L. (Tom) Sebring, Kansas State '20, born in Gardner, Kansas, is the youngest Florida Supreme Court Justice. He was selected early in September by the War Department as one of the judges to try the second group of war criminals at Nuernberg, Germany. This service might take him away from the bench for as long as nine months. His decision in this matter was being withheld at the time of this writing pending a formal conference with the governor of Florida, Millard Caldwell.

Brother Sebring served twenty-two months overseas as a field artilleryman during World War I , and received two French and two American citations for gallantry in action. He was i:1 the army of occupation for nine months after cessation of hostilities.

He came to the University of Flonida as an assistant coach in 1923 after graduation from Kansas State where he was a football star, and became head coach in 1925. His private law practice began in 1928 after his graduation from the institution's law school.

Previous to his election to the Florida Supreme Court in 1942, he had served nearly nine years as a circuit judge in Gainesville. He is the newest member of the 7-justice court, and is serving his third year of a 6-year term. With his wife and one son, H. L. Sebring, Jr., he lives in Tallahassee, Florida.

George E. Morgan, Northwestern '41, was recently released from active duty in the Navy and has taken the position of assistant advertising manager of the Diamond T Motor Car Company in Chicago. George has just undergone a major operation and reports that he is making satisfactory recovery.

Lt. Col. Leo B. Roberts, Kansas '08, spent his entire time in Great Britain serving the Allies in his specialty, harbor engineering. He was head of the ports subsection for the Army engineers, European theater. In civilian life his work as a New York engineer and topographer took him to v irtually all distant lands, and this work may be repeated in view of the fact that harbors in many parts of the world were destroyed during the war.

At last reports Brother Roberts did not know to what part of the globe he would be ordered next, but wherever the Merritt-Chapman and Scott Corporation of New York sends him, he is ready to go.

Rear Admiral Richard H. Laning, Michigan '06, of the Navy Medical Corps, has received the Legion of Merit for performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Inspector of Medical Department Activities in the Advanced Areas, from October, 1944, to July, 1945. Rear Admiral Monroe Kelly, Commandant of the Third Naval District made the presentation, and the citation read in part, "Traveling by air and by sea to all adval'lced a r eas, Rear Admiral Laning made professional observations and suggestions regarding material to the Surgeon General of the Navy, making it possible to expand and improve medical services to the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel in Advanced Areas, as well as to maintain adequate quantities of medical supplies, equipment and facilities for the evacuation of casualties."

Joseph A. Miller, Illinois '41, is also a member of the Graduate Student Course of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Recently discharged from the United States Army with the rank of first lieutenant, he served overseas as a platoon commander in the Combat Engineers, U . S. 3rd Army.

He has campaign stars for the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Germany.

He received his degr ee in mechanical engineering in 1944 from the University of Illinois.

Fraternity Groups Praised Doctor George D. Stoddard, President of the University of Illinois, has recently expressed his approval of fraternities and sororities, and his appreciation of the valuable service they have rendered both to the individual members and to the university as . a whole.

"I'm for them," he said, and pointed out that they have gone farther with their housing than either the state or the University. He stated that the University itself has permanent accommodations for only 900 students, whereas fraternities and sororities house 3,000.

He also called attention to the wonderful service given by the fraternities during the war in turning over their houses for the thousands of trainees.

Fraternity and sorority members will all be grateful for President Stoddard's vote of approval. Now it is up to them to endeavor still more earnest-

HMother" Lyles Is Back After three years with the Delta Gammas at Washburn, Mrs. Ella Lyles is back for her fifteenth year as Acacia house-mother at Kansas State. Closed during the war, the house opened again this fall with a membership of twenty. The chapter became inactive in 1943 when all but two of its members went to war, but "Mother" Lyles promised to return when the boys came back. While at Washburn she corresponded with many of them, as well as the many alumni who keep in touch with her.

Mrs. Lyles recalls that when she came to Manhattan in 1929 the chapter had thirty-five boys-its record year. In its worst year, the fraternity began with seven members, but the number was greatly increased by spring. Several of these Acacia alumni are now on the Kansas State faculty.

A real mother to her boys, "Mother" Lyles likes to prepare their favorite dishes, and often does their mending.

She is quite proud of the new furnishings given the house this fall by the alumni. She finds her work as a fraternity house-mother very pleasant, and her associations with the boys a real joy. They are very happy to have her back with them, and recently presented her with flowers in honor of her return.

A visitor at the Conclave was CoL Charles F. Poe, Colorado '11 , Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Colorado. He returned in March, 1946, from forty-five months' service overseas, in England, Oran, the Lyon Depot in France and the Bamberg Depot in Germany. Brother Poe was chapter adviser of the Colorado Chapter in 1911-1912. His home address is 875 16th Street, Boulder, Colorado.

Chapter Eternal Dr. William Livesay Bur dick, Kansas '04, passed away at the age of 86, on June 11, 1946, after a month's illness. Commenting on his death, Chancellor Deane W. Malott of the Univer-

ELLA LYLES sity of Kansas said: "His long and distinguished record on the campus and over the state and nation will be long remembered by those who knew him, but his most suitable memorial will be found in the continuing service of those lawyers, statesmen and others who came under his influence as a teacher and friend." A testimonial to this record was the celebration of his 85th birthday held on March 22, 1945, an account of which appeared in the June, 1945, issue of the TRIAD. The names of many illustrious lawyers and judges, former students of Dr. Burdick, were listed among those present on that occasion.

As professor of law, dean, and finally dean emeritus of the school of law, and vice-chancellor, he had been on the University of Kansas campus since 1898. Some 2,500 students of law came under his influence, and he delivered more than 15,000 lectures to K. U . classes. His influence extended over the state and nation in ten important books on law which are widely used, in many articles contributed to law magazines, and in hundreds of appearances as a public speaker. For five years (1919-1924) he was engaged in work of national importance, directing the revision of the federal statutes passed from 1878 to 1919.

His real achievement, however, lay in his influence in developing the character as well as the ability of many hundreds of students. He had a high concept of the function of the courts and the legal profession, and a deep respect for English common law. He often pointed out two inscriptions on the wall outside the library of the school of"law. One, from a decision of the Kansas Supreme Court reads: "Unless a man is honest, conscientious and patriotic, he is not fit to practice

law." The other is from Justinian, the great lawgiver of ancient Rome: "The principles of the law are these: to live uprightly, to wrong no one, to render every man his due."

To a man of such standards, the conditions which Dr. Burdick found in a world tour in 1932 and 1933 were a great shock. His study of courts and legal procedure around the world resulted in his book, The Bench and the Bar in Other Lands. He spoke particularly of the downfall of the integrity and independence of the courts in Germany, Italy and Russia when the legislative power was usurped by dictators, and wrote: "But today, in those lands, liberty and law as we in America understand those terms, no longer exist. It is not that the peoples of those countries have changed. It is that they have been influenced and compelled to declare that the old order has outlived its usefulness, and that a new day has dawned, a day when the people's masters would tell them what to believe and what to do.

"We must always be on guard lest our own temples of justice be destroyed. Only by power and authority of law can all that is good and beneficent on earth be protected and maintained."

It is words such as these that have molded the thinking of his many students, and through them will continue to wield an uplifting influence.

Lt. Arthur Lee Thompson, Cornell '41, of the 13th F. A. Bn., was killed in action on August 14, 1945. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action near Biao, Mindanao, Philippine Islands on August 12, 1945.

"The infantry platoon which Lt. Thompson was accompanying as artillery observer was ambushed by a superior number of Japanese and pinned down in an exposed position from which it could not be extracted until after nightfall. Lt. Thompson fell wounded in the first surprise burst of fire and was killed instantly by the second burst which followed almost immediately afterwards."

With deep regret we announce that word has just reached us that the name of Lawrence K . Smarr, Missouri '33, is to be added to the Honor Roll of Acacia. At the start of the war, Larry was in the Philippines and was taken prisoner by the Japs. Later in the war, the J ap boat on which he was being transferred was sunk. This is all the information we have been able to obtain.

CJJoings zn the Chapters California The California chapter has returned to n ormal peacetime status now and is operating strictly as a fraternity again. Our ranks have been filled with all of our returning veterans, and our total active list is as follows: Dick Burns, Joe Close, Russ Connors, Roy Dixon, Bruce Dwelley, Tom Evans, Bob Force, Dave Fredrickson, Hugh Friend, Hal Granquist, Bob Grimshaw, Doug Guichard, Lloyd Harris, Dick Hirschfeld, Reed Keyes, Harry Larsen, Bob Lewis, Glenn Lewis, Carlisle Moore, Bob Peck, Tom Pray, Ed Prewett, George Robson and Dean Yeaman.

Rushing nowadays is easier than it has been for a good long time, and we were able to take our pick of the crop. We think we have made a good selection. We pledged nine new men this semester: Bill Arsenault, Oakland; John Forder, Glendale; Bob Frye, Hollywood; Jim Herndon, Los Angeles; Jack Jensen, San Francisco; Don McCormack, Rio Vista; Malcolm McCormack, Rio Vista; Ted Martinson, Oakland; and Harry Riegel, Pasadena. We already had three pledges from last semester-Jim Campbell, Len Fugate and Jack Vinding-so we have a grand total of twelve pledges now.

Election of officers took place at the start of the semester and we have Harry Larsen at the helm as V. D ., Dick Hirschfeld, S.D., Lloyd Harris, J . D ., Tom Pray, secretary, and Dick Burns as house manager. These are all good men and ought to make the present semester one of the best.

The pledge class has spirit in copious quantities so far, and has kept the house from getting in the doldrums. One night during dinner they arranged an ingenious candle device to drop a weight and pull the main switch for the house lights, and soon after they disappeared. The act ives figured that was a good time to show the pledges who was boss around the house, so they battened down all the hatches and rigged up the house for an A-1 water battle when the pledges returned. They came armed with a stirrup pump and hoses to combat the actives' pails and second-story vantage points.

After a long struggle, hard fought, all ended well, with the pledges and the front of the house being thoroughly wetted down. On another occasion, the pledge master was spirited away for his semesterly trip, winding up at Stanford University after many a detour.

Crowded conditions seem to be universal nowadays in all universities. Before the war we usually had a maximum of twenty-three men in the house, with a few outside members. But with all of our returned vets we have had to double up a bit and there are now thirty-one men in the house, and four outside members.

The way things are going now, we will never have to return to the dark days of the late thirties. Much of the talk about veterans being a source of friction seems to have been overplayed. At present 80 per cent of our chapter are veter ans, but the activities are quite the same as prewar. In fact, the veterans seem to have a more stable bearing, and are more conscientious than they were before, so that things function even more smoothly than before.

Our intramural program has started out with a bang. In all events so far, we are undefeated, and we are gunning for first place this fall. Our football team is well coached by Stumpy, and with the fine athletes we have in the house w e should shove on well to the top of the fraternity league.

We have had several visitors from other chapters this summer. Ed and Bob Cornish of the Franklin Chapter stopped by for a few days while they were on a trip through California. Also, Curley Kioski of Michigan dropped in. Frank Skinner, Purdue, is taking graduate work at California, studying for his M.A. and Ph.D. in entomology, and has been around to the house on several occasions.

Wedding bells rang out for several of our members this fall. We had another case of one of the fellows marrying his roommate's sister. Bob Church has teamed up for life with Phyllis Hiney, the sister of his roomy Bill. And just two weeks ago Darrell Nelson put his ring on the finger of Mary Marsh, Phi Omega Pi. Len Fugate is still waiting for his future to get here from Australia, and will be married soon. Some of the others in the house have that look in their eyes at times, and cigars may be passed out to indicate an engagement.

We are well represented in campus activities and honorary societies this fall.

We have men on the Daily Californian newspaper, and Tom Evans and Jim Campbell are manager and junior manager respectively of the Blue and Gold yearbook. Dave Fredrickson is a letter man on the v arsity wrestling team, and we have several men in the Glee Club.

There are also fellows in the ASME, ASCE, SAACS, and the Masonic Club, along with three national fraternitiesAlpha Delta Sigma, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Phi. Quite a few fellows stood guard with the sophomore vigilantes in guarding the Big C from being painted by the rival St. Mary's College. The name of Acacia is definitely being spread around campus this fall.

The House Corporation is really on the ball. The house was completely painted this summer and really looks good now.

They have promised to get us a new flag to complete the appearance, and that should be here in the very near future.

They are also looking into the possibility of fixing up the basement into a game

room so that we will have a place to set up our ping-pong table. We used t o be able to play ping-pong in the dining room, but it's just too crowded in there now, so we h ave to look elsewhere for a place.

So far we haven't had much time to get many dances organized this fall. We had one radio dance after the Cal-Wisconsin game, and are now devoting our time to preparation s for a big Hallowe'en dance which should be a darn good one. Goblins, witches, and other nefarious demoniac creatures will be in attendance.

Bill Hiney dropped around at the house one football week-end to see his old friends and meet new ones. Bob Ball is going to California now and drops in occasionally. Bill McCutchan came in one Monday night for a house meeting and was well greeted by the gang. Bill is one of our ex-V.D.'s and he plans to return to California this spring. Kenny Moore, West Point graduate and now stationed in Japan, has just been made a first lieutenant. Sheldon Downey, who was at the Conclave this summer, is now taking graduate work at the University of Illinois.

This semester will hit a new high for California Chapter of Acacia, we're sure.

We have a gang of swell fellows with lots of spirit, and we're in the golden period of postwar fraternity life.

Cincinnati Long before the University of Cincinnati startled the football world by defeatin g Indiana (Jim Howard and Company please note ), everyone here was aware that the times had literally changed. Veterans, flocking by the thousands into these staid old halls, had lent a unique air to the campus- an air of dignified maturity and intentness of purpose, well mixed with the capacity to enjoy life and to get along with others.

While these veterans were silencing their detractors by batting out big scholastic averages, they were at the same time fnfusing new blood into campus social life.

This new vigor was climaxed by the recently completed rush season which saw some fifteen hundred m en being rushed by the seventeen social fraternities, each of which was able to secure the number of pledges it desired.

Here at Acacia the rush program started with a house dance on September 7 and continued through two hectic weeks. A father and son smoker took place on September 9 and a hay ride on the following Saturday. The next week's round of events included an alumni smok er , two noon buffet luncheons, a party at Williams Y.M.C.A. and a postgame party with Mexican chili as refreshments. The

grand finale was a stag picnic and football game held at Sharron Woods. The winner of the game remains a matter of hot dispute, but all agree that Jack Doebrich took his undeserved mauling like a man. Despite Fred Stork's interpretation of the rules and Rogers Miller's newly discovered "trip block," everyone seemed to enjoy the game. Casualties were light.

Jack Harvey certainly did an outstanding job as rush chairman.

Since the summer session was as overflowing as the regular terms, Acacia kept its house open and its activities in high gear. July 14 witnessed the initiation of four additional men into the active chapter-Jack Doebrich, Walt Nolte, Charlie Hahn and Paul Weidner. The loudest cry at the pledge party and dance was: "Doebrich finally made it."

The Cincinnati Chapter roll call for the beginning of the school year is the highest in its history, as is also the enrollment in the University. For the first section the following responded: Stork, Britton, Gibbons, Doebrich, Best, Waterfield, Ackermann, Hicks, D. Johnson, Ridgeway, Hill, Waddell, Schmidt, Alday, Patterson, Weidner, Marx, Fleming, Harvey, Mook and Borders. The second section will include Jackson, Heckert, Kopp, Wagner, Sonnenberg, Nolte, Hahn, Gilliss, Price, Gallentine and possibly a few returned veterans. The list includes thirty-one and an added pledge list of fourteen with a possible double that number in a few more weeks. It is evident that our housing program will be a difficult one to solve, particularly for the second section.

The neophytes are Bob Wright, Rogers Miller, Norm Eichenburger, Ed Eisert, George Kirch, Jack Klahm, Frank Mudgett, Mac Craig, Elmer Biesack, John Larson, Rali Albright, Bill Williams, Frank Sharold, Dick Brown and Bill Cooper.

The new pledge class promptly plunged into chapter activities, and have already formulated plans for Homecoming Day and the traditional Hallowe'en Party. The football team finds the services of the pledges to be of value too. Led by Bob "Baby Boy" Best and Bill "Bruiser" Britton, the Acacia "Hot Rocks," as they have styled themselves, are in excellent condition and are ready for the intramural season. The Purdue Chapter will be interested to hear that Frank Baynes' paunch is fast disappearing under the exacting and rigorous duties of a left end.

Cincinnati was, shall we say, "well represented" at the recent Conclave, where twelve of our tried and true were seen, the largest chapter delegation present. Rumor had it that there would be a ceiling placed on Cincinnati attendance. Every . one had a good time and felt that the sessions were not only well-planned and superbly conducted, but were most instructive and inspirational. We are in favor of the suggestion that it reconvene next year.

Marion Huber is still beaming like a Senator over his election as National Treasurer. One group of the fellows accompanied the Chapter Adviser on a tour of Indiana on their way home.

Looking around the chapter . .. George Patterson, our self-made man, is getting a reputation as a "brute." He took his law school final exams in the morning, was

married that afternoon, spent a week on his honeymoon and got back in time to attend a hard-fought chapter meeting battle. . . . Elmer Mook is back looking as suave and urbane as ever, and Cal Gibbons is again proving an asset to the chapter after his enforced absence.

We would like to venture a suggestion to all the Acacia chapters. If you have a chapter newspaper, or even a small flyer, why not get out a few extra copies and send one to each of the other chapters?

Let's live up to our designation as a National Fraternity by keeping each other posted on activities and new ideas or trends. Even an occasional exchange of letters would serve admirably.

Here at Cincinnati we have a traditional practice which I think is of general interest to all the other chapters. This idea was presented at the Conclave, but it seems important enough to warrant repetition. Each year we have what is called "Greek Week," a week in which the fraternities over the entire campus have an opportunity to become better acquainted, thereby fostering closer relations. Exchange dinners are held between active chapters and pledge classes; all houses are thrown open; and the week is climaxed by a huge banquet at which all fraternity men and pledges are in attendance. This all takes place in the first week in February, and at the end of the week most fraternities initiate their pledges. Everyone here thinks highly of the practice as a means of promoting friendship and mutual understanding among rival fraternities.

The Cincinnati Alumni Association was organized during the summer with the following officers: President, Ferd Hodde; Secretary, William Klahm; Treasurer, Jack Lissenden. The first social meeting was held in the Hotel Alms. This included a short business session and a sumptuous buffet luncheon later. This luncheon, by the way, included three kinds of meat.

We really spread ourselves. As this was a stag affair, a card party followed. Marion Huber gave a review of the Conclave.

David Bowman, Cecil Haas and Dr. Patterson gave brief talks. The next meetings will be held in November and December. All Acacians in the Cincinnati area are welcome. Call at the house, please.

Notes on Cincinnati Acacians.

William C. Clayton, an executive at the Mesta Machine Company, Pittsburgh, writes that he has not seen a Cincinnati Acacian, except Lee Fitch, since his graduation. Let's all write Bill that we will stop on our next trip East.

Giles Barton and family spent their vacation in Cincinnati this summer, the first in seven years. Giles is production manager of the Ryan Aircraft Company in San Diego, California. He¡ lives at 3520 Browning Street.

James Broadston combined a vacation with a business trip to Cincinnati this fall. His wife, son and daughter accompanied him here. They live on Taft Road, Hollywood, California.

Joe E. Faust was married this summer to Wanda Lee Sloan of Elk City, Oklahoma, and now occupies a new apartment at 51 South Main Street, Fairfield, Ohio. He

is working for the Airtemp Division of the Chrysler Corporation. He hopes to attend the Acacia social affairs during the school year.

Lt. Col. William Wuest, now in the European Military Government writes an interesting letter which appears elsewhere in this issue. He attended the trials at Nuernberg.

Captain Edwin F. Price was married to Alice Bowman on August 31. Miss Bowman is the daughter of David Bowman, CoLumbia '14, telegraph editor of the Cincinnati Times Star. The wedding was held at Calvary Episcopal Church, Cincinnati, with a reception for friends, and Acacians in particular, in the parish house following the ceremony. Their new home is on Wood Avenue.

Captain Robert D. Reiman was married to Elizabeth Sanser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sanser of New York City, on June 3, 1946. Bob is an official of the Delta Airlines.

George Patterson was married to Mary Louise Stewart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Stewart, on September 21, 1946.

George is the son of Dr. George Patterson, Iowa '15. For three years he served as Venerable Dean of the Cincinnati Chapter. He is now a second-year student of the Cincinnati College of Law, and is also on the Board of Trustees of the Chapter Alumni Holding Company, The Ashier Trust Company. About thirty members and pledges of the Cincinnati Chapter attended the wedding, and the reception which followed at the Alms Hotel. After a wedding trip to the Southland, they returned to Cincinnati where George will resume his studies.

George McPeck '29, and his wife announce the arrival of Martha Carmen on May 10, 1946, at Bellefontaine, Ohio. Congratulations. George is living in Caracas, Venezuela, where he is an executive with the Stubbins Export Company. He had formerly written that in that country of boom prices he was going broke on a salary of $1100.00 U. S. currency per month.

This matter must have been adjusted to the present conditions for he has not as yet returned.

Marcia Lynn, daughter of Harry W. Morlatt, '38, arrived at Tacoma, Washington, on September 22, 1946. Congratulations, Harry.

Cincinnati Acacians extend their sympathy to William Parry, '29, in the death of his father, Richard Parry, Past President of the National Association of Power Engineers.

William Arthur, '35, has been discharged from the Navy and has resumed his position with the United States Postal Service at Dayton, Ohio. Bill called at the house this summer in hope of seeing some familiar faces, but he says that he had no such luck.

Ferd Hodde, '32, was married to Alma Gruelach recently. They went by plane to Chicago where they began a long lake cruise on their honeymoon.

Frank Baynes of the Purdue Chapter has been living at the house while pursuing his studies at the Cincinnati Medical College. Welcome, Frank.

Lt. Graham Gilliss has taken an apartment in Mt. Auburn and will continue work on his degree.

Robert Borders has been made an instructor in mathematics at the Engineering College and will continue to work toward his Master's degree.

Cecil Carleton was married at the Winton Place Evangelical Church on September 7, 1946. He and Mrs. Carleton will live in their trailer home at West Lafayette while he continues his studies at Purdue University. Sorry to see you leave, Cecil. Congratulations and our best wishes.

Bob Englert has returned to his teaching duties in Cincinnati.

Bill and Carl Bertsche are in their own business in Cincinnati.

Jay Ritchie is living in St. Louis, Missouri, where he has established a business in photographic accessories.

Younger brothers in the pledge list include George Kirch of Long Island, New York, and Jack Klahm of Cincinnati. This is a good tradition.

Colorado Colorado got off to a good start in its fall activities on September 16 when they pledged fourteen men after a very successful and complete rush week. Robert Eckel, senior dean, and Burt Smith, rush assistant, planned and carried out the program which resulted in one of the best pledge classes in recent years. The men pledged are: James Aiken, Walter Clark, Walter Dunn, Charles Hutchinson, James Hutchinson, Tom Hutchinson, Chan Moulton, Deward Niehans, Harold Petsch, Harold Potter, Walter Page, Richard Romig, James Schmidt and Robert Gray.

During the week-end of September 27, seven men were initiated-William Bradbury, Glenn Bullen, Donald Cieber, Leslie Hines, Joe Pollard, James Tate and Bruce Warden. The initiation of these men brings to twenty-three the total number of actives in the chapter. At the end of the fall, 1945, term the chapter had a total of but four actives and no pledges.

Our present pledge class numbers twenty-one.

During the holiday period between the summer and fall terms, the chapter house was completely redecorated inside and out, and all of the furniture and venetian blinds were cleaned and renewed. The house is now once again in the condition in which the men left it when the chapter went inactive during the war years.

Some minor landscaping has also been done on the grounds.

We have been taking an active part in all campus activities with men in almost every field. We have a team competing in the intramural football league, and men out for varsity athletics. Acacia is also represented on student publications,

25 interfraternity council, greek combine and various boards and committees. ' The social committee under the direction of Gilbert Walker, junior dean, has planned a complete social program for the quarter with every date filled with exchange dinners, radio dances, open houses, tea dances, a hay ride and a for mal. The members also attend all of the home football games in a body and make a good showing both as an independent and co-operative rooting section complete with bells and gongs. The University will play its homecoming game against the University of New Mexico on October 26, and the members are planning a buffet supper for the alumni and their families.

The chapter will hold open house at this time, and it is hoped that every alum who can possibly attend will do so. We are also planning a homecoming float and house decorations in line with theme.

Franklin Greetings!

Franklin Chapter opened with a commotion instead of a bang this fall when it was discovered that we were among the group of Pennsylvania fraternities which had been invaded by burglars.

Practically everything of value had been stripped and prospects of recovery seemed sorry indeed. But, thanks to the abilities of the local police, the group of men performing the organized robberies was apprehended and a good deal of the loot was recovered. As fate would have it, part of the spoils from our house had already been disposed of, and we got back only two sofas and four chairs.

At the present time Franklin Chapter is a beehive of activity. Everyone, including our pledges, is doing his utmost to make Acacia one of the leading fraternities at Pennsylvania. The fruits of our efforts can be seen around the house which is almost back to better than prewar condition.

A full program of social activities after the Pennsylvania football games has been planned. With rushing just around the corner, the prospects of larger-than-ever pledge classes seem extremely bright.

Since everyone is definitely on the ball this year, these prospects should become an actuality.

BOB MORRISON

Illinois Illinois began the fall semester with forty-two actives and twenty-two pledges.

The great increase in men was made possible by the chapter's purchase of the house next door as an annex. Twenty-five men are now living in the annex, and, although conditions are a little crowded, it has proved to be quite satisfactory notwithstanding the erratic Champaign water supply.

At a formal meeting this summer eleven pledges were initiated and have taken their places as active members in good standing in the chapter. Those initiated were : Jack Williams and Gene Swager of Pontiac; Ken Bunchman, Springfield; Jim Preston and Dean Preston of P ekin; George Frandsen, Chicago ; Bob Herzog, Forest Park; Dick Dickinson, Eureka ; Ray Meliza, Farmer City; and Rollie Morken, Elmwood Park.

On October 13 two more pledges, Jack Graham and Gus Burnham, both of Peoria, were initiated, bringing the number of actives to forty-four .

Eighteen new pledges are now living in the house after having been rushed this summer and fall. All are very fine fellows and show promise of being a great group of actives in the semesters t o come. The list of current pledges, all from Illinois, is as follows: Ira Bliss, Wauconda ; Don Bengard, Jack Jackman and Paul Powell of Peoria ; Bruce Esmond, Ed Foutch and Ken Lindsay of Springfield; Tom Moore, Frank Frandsen and Roy Terp of Chicago; Dale Feldman, Morrison ; Dick Fulrath, Champaign; Don Kincaid, Athens; Burt Koepke and Bill Wilcox of Oak Park; Ed Lemmon, Pleasant Hill; Dick Sibley, Princeville; and Bill Ziegler, Dwight.

Of these pledges the following are sons of alumni of the Illinois Chapter: Ira Bliss -stepson of Harry Kirwan, '21; Dale Feldman- son of Joseph Feldman, '14; Dick Fulrath-son of Bill Fulrath, '18; Burt Koepke-son of Frank Koepke, '19; Don Kincaid-son of J . Kennedy Kincaid, '07 ; and Bill Ziegler-son of J. F. Ziegler, '07.

Bill James, Jack Tuthill, Jr., Roy Ferrette, Ed Verkler, Gene Swager, Jack Graham, Jack Williams and Lee Rollman are the married men who have solved the housing shortage and are living on the campus. In addition, Bob James and Al Cress are married and are members of the university faculty.

The chapter's social functions, under the able direction of social chairman, Dave Monson, commence on October 26 with a house dance. The music will be furnished by the revolving bandstands of Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Charlie Spivak. Following this is the Pledge Dance on November 9, and the season will be climaxed by the Winter Formal on December 7. The music for the latter function will be by one of the better bands on campus. The social functiqns this semester show promise of being the most successful since before the war.

The Notre Dame game, in spite of the fact that it was a dull thud from the standpoint of the score, was the occasion for the chapter to renew acquaintances with several alumni. Those loyal brothers who braved the traffic perils to get here were: Wally Cross, '07; Oral Lansche, '13; Joe Feldman, '14; Marsh Johnson, '43; and Vic Prince, '43. It was fine to see them, and we all hope that they and many more can get down to the Homecoming game with Wisconsin on October 19.

Intramural activities began last week.

The softball team, man aged by Ed "The Cards are a cinch " Kelly, sh ows promise of being near the top in the finals. They lost the first gam e, but through the efforts of pitcher Dick S troker, t hey won the second. The tennis and golf teams ran into tough competition and, to coin an old German expression, ''Alles Kaput." Our football team is still an unknown quantity at this writing.

This highlights the activities of the chapter for the fall semester. In closing, we would like to invite all alumni and friends of the fraternity to drop in and see us whenever they have an opportunity.

weeks ago, I visited the Acacia Chapter at Michigan , I was informed that this is the first semester that the fraternity has function ed since the war. That day they were working hard to get things in shipshape after the big game, but they managed to serve a swell dinner even in all the confusion. Don Queller, a former Acacian and track star at I. U., was in there pitching, and also Charlie "Pappy" Jarrett, I. U. Acacian and now National Traveling Secretary.

This letter is rather limited since at this time we have not yet begun to function as a fraternity and so do not have anything to report on new officers or any social functions .

Iowa State Indiana After clearing away the debris and sucessfully pulling my typewriter out from under numerous items such as suitcases, blankets, laundry bags, desks and boxes, I am ready to give you some current dope.

As elsewhere, the question of the hour here is rooms, rooms, and some more housing. There is no doubt about it-we have more Acacians coming to school this year than ever before in our history. I'll give you some statistics on the rooming situation. Our house accommodates comfortably about forty-eight fellows, but this year we are jamming in sixty-three men - and that ain't hay. There are also a few dozen Acacians scattered around the campus in house trailers, rooming houses, etc.

We lost several fellows to matrimony during the vacation months. However, all of them have decided to come back to I. U . and finish their undergraduate work. Bill Schuldt, as mentioned in a previous TRIAD article, finally scored on his long-distance courting to Spokane, Washington. He and his wife, Mary Lou, are now living in a trailer house just off campus. Bill Thompson and his wife, the former Mary Gray Thompson, an AO Pi at Indiana, are now living in an apartment here and will continue at the university. Don Crooke married Marilyn Emmert, also an AO Pi here at I. U., and they too are living here in an apartment and continuing in school.

Devon MacMurr ay had things coming thick and fast. He was initia ted into the fraternity and, deciding that wasn't enough excitement, he entered into the marriage state with Barbara Davis, a Pi Phi, and they, too, are back on campus.

Our celebration of being on campus for twenty -five years-our "Twenty-fifth Anniversary"-was postponed until next semester . This was due to the delay in the b eginning of school. Inasmuch as the firs t semester will be short, we decided that it would be much better for both the alumni and the active chapter if the celebration were pu t off until Founder 's Day, May 22, or the week -end n earest that date.

Our alumni are r esponsible for this celebration, as they h ave given twenty-five hundred dollars toward the Anniversary.

We here at Ames have started the year with increased enthusiasm. This includes such social activities as exchanges, picnics and firesides.

With fifteen actives, pledges and boarders here, the house was in operation this past summer. Acting as House Parents during the quarter were AI and Betty Miller, an old active who is taking graduate work in mathematics, and his wife.

From all reports, plenty of fun and enjoyment were cooked up to take the edge off the old grind of the summer months.

Completely filling the house this fall are thirty-one men including returning actives, old and new pledges, and last year's gang. Among the actives are Cal Boise, Dick Cowles, Bob Denney, Charles Dingle, Ed Drdla, Don Grobeck, Gordon Johnson, Wendell Stewart and Jack Carstens who have returned from service.

Members of the fine pledge class are Glen Anderson, Bill Chain, Milton Grobeck, Carl O'Beirn, Jim Petersen, Bill Redman, Fred Saemish, Eugene Venter, Dave Welden, Walter Werner, Bob Jenkins and Bob Martin.

Other actives back are Bob Bortle, Gordon Cook, Victor Denis, Frank Griffith, Ellsworth Kohlmann, Wilbert Olson, John Peterson, Antony Riepma, John Tschantz and John Wahlgren. Living other places around the campus are actives Dick Campbell, Al Miller and Bob Grobeck.

Our House Parents for the coming year are Mr. and Mrs. Cy Righter. He is majoring in Dairy Industry. We like these fine folks very much. Also we have with us our former cook and are eating royally.

During the week before school started we practically took the house apart and put it back together again in the process of our yearly cleaning and repairing campaign. With our new radio-phonograph, our exchange and firesides will have more pep and enjoyment for all.

Last spring we built a float in the form of a big birthday cake for the Vieshea parade. Many fine compliments were received on it. Other chapter activities have included softball, horseshoe pitching and golf putting. Soon to these will be added football, table tennis and bowling.

Former V. D. Charles Clark and D . Jean Merrill, K . D ., w ere married last June 15 here in Ames with Wen dell Stewart as

best man. Then this fall we learned that Stew just couldn't stay from the altar when he announced his engagement to Miss Marjorie Fullmer of South St. Paul, Minnesota.

Kansas State For two weeks before school started on September 23, there was a lot of activity going on at 340 North 16th Street in Manhattan, Kansas. Several members had returned from the armed forces, and Bill Peycke, Leonard Wood, Keith Hodgson, Charles Hall, Joe Nathan and several other recruits were busy painting, cleaning, waxing floors, renovating irreplaceable furniture and placing new furniture.

Mother Lyles (back to start her 16th year with the chapter), aided by Patty Hall and Ruthie Nathan, made drapes, tablecloths and tea towels for the house. All this was done in addition to the work that Joe and Bobbie Rowland did last summer while they were occupying the Acacia homestead. During those hectic weeks, it was not the least bit uncommon to welcome a potential rushee with a paint brush and a hardy command to attack the dining-room ceiling. So, in spite of everything, and with the cooperation of our alumni chapter, the house is in the best shape it has been in for many years.

We came through rush week with seventeen new pledges, and we are still going strong. At present there are six actives in the chapter (three single) and twentyfive pledges (five married) .

Now that the classes are in full swing, the brothers have settled down to study, but we still have an active football team in the intramural league that has a 1 and 1 score to date, and a good schedule ahead.

Our social schedule is on the go, and everyone is really out to have one good day of fun a week.

So far this season we've had an allsorority open house dance that proved a great success. Each sorority on campus was contacted and asked to send a delegation of three girls from their respective houses. We had a dance to honor our new pledges following the first B-team football game. We only have three home varsity games this year. And we have had one sorority exchange dance. The party following the Kansas State-Missouri game proved a howling success. Pledge Stan Williams took over the plans and started the evening's hilarity off with a saucer-broomstick race, followed by a period of dancing. Then the couples were lined up across a row of apples suspended from the ceiling on strings, and much laughter resulted from the contest over which couple could devour their apple first. The group then retired to the dining room for cider and cookies, accompanied by a sing-fest, and the evening wound up with mor e dancing and card games. Social plans include lots of small novel parties, and arrangements are now under way for the annual Acacia Phi Kappa Stag party to be held next month.

We were fortunate enough to have George Croyle, traveling secretary, with us recently, and he really gave us many good pointers to get us started out on the right path. At a meeting of our Alumni Board of Directors, George reported on the National Conclave. The Board commended the chapter on the work the men had done to improve the house, and V.D .

Leonard Wood thanked the alumni for their cooperation in reorganizing the chapter.

Our chapter has an organized Wives' Club which meets with Mother Lyles at t he same time the chapter has its regular meetings. The girls have done a great deal to help us get started again, and take an active interest in chapter activities.

The following officers were elected for the fall semester: Venerable Dean, Leonard Wood; Senior Dean, Charles Hall; Junior Dean, Joe Nathan; Secretary, Keith Hodgson; Treasurer, Bill Peycke; Sergeant-at-Arms, Joe Rowland.

Our chapter is backing a movement to organize a campus Masonic organization.

We have promised our full support, and have offered the use of our chapter house for their meetings.

Michigan Like all fraternities over the country, Michigan has returned to active participation in college life. With this participation come many tasks that take time and a great deal of effort on the part of all the members.

Fortunately, three actives, Jim Churchill, Arch Hall, Mac McGregor and one pledge, Otto Strobel, were on hand this summer to take over the house from the University. With only four Acacians around in the summer time, the house took in boarders to meet expenses and gain some additional r evenue for needed repairs due in the fall. Upon the opening of the fall term, most of the members planned to do the needed work of painting the walls. So during the summer term the four fellows busied themselves clear¡¡ ing away the weeds that had taken over the back lawn and were almost two feet tall. Otto did his pledge share of cuttin' the weeds.

A week before the fall term started the house was full and most of the fellows were busy painting the front room, hallways and the dining-room. By the looks of many, it seemed as if the men w ere painting each other instead of the walls.

27 Fred Bryan, who just returned from the Navy, spared a few minutes to paint, but a good portion of the time he was chasing the freshman women. Fred takes the prize as THE WOMEN'S DREAM. The rest of the fellows painted until the work was done. Bill Pierson, now a graduate, came back to work, also to get ready to absorb some more knowledge.

Arch Hall is in his last term with hopes of starting his medical training soon afterwards. Henry "Lip" Hosmer and Killer Kelso, both just back from the w a rs, are in school trying hard to be engineers.

Rus Buster has taken the job as house manager. The house does t ake chances.

Of course, the Wunch brothers are of great help to Rus. After the term was started we settled down to the business of electing officers.

Kay Buchanan took over the V.D. from Jim Churchill. Arch Hall who will soon graduate left the office of Senior Dean to John Wunch. Herb Smith stayed on as Secretary, and Hank Hosmer took over the work of Junior Dean. He has the job well done. In conjunction with the election we held formal pledging of Fred Malson, Otto Strobel, Bob Hughes, Lans Jones John Hazelworth and Kenny Smith.

Bill Opdyke retired from the Treasury of which he was in charge in 1945. Rus has that headache as house manager.

Last week and during this week, October 1 and October 11, we were rushing.

The names of the pledges are not yet at hand so I shall not be able to include them in this issue of the TRIAD. During this semester we have Don Queller, a track star from Indiana, Dan Gillespie from Penn State, and Jim Kemmish from Iowa State completing the total of a full house.

Ohio Acacia here at Ohio State has really been going great guns during the first two weeks of the Fall Quarter. But before I go into detail, let me review some of the outstanding events of the past summer.

August found brothers Jim Mahaffey, Bob Bernard, John Skinner, Don Lund and "Lefty" Davis in the windy city, Chicago, attending the Acacia Conclave. They all agreed that their fraternity morale got a big lift from this get-together, and they came back with lots of ideas for making our chapter bigger and better.

August also found Tommy "Red" James, the pride and joy of the football team, and one of the greatest backs on college gridirons over the nation, tying that wellknown knot of matrimony. He married Rosemary Brown from his native Massillon.

Bob Beerbower returned from the army, reentered school and got married, all in September. Busy month, eh? The little lady is the former Margie Benton.

Our ever-popular Perry Hosmer is the proud new pappy of a bouncing baby boy named Larry. And since we last went to press, Dick Cross has had another addition to the family-another boy, too.

But the warm, pleasant days of summer are over, so let's be getting into some of the news of events of the busy fall season.

Old, familiar, prewar faces keep popping up all the time. Some of the boys that have returned to the fold from back in '42 include : Bob Beerbower, Don Haxton, Don Hoeffel, Ernie Rice, J ack B r onson and Ray Miller (pledge ) . And two of the real " old guard," Lee Vandervort and Roland Hosmer, are back getting their Master 's degrees.

New officers h ave been elect ed and have taken office amid a burst of enthusiasm.

They are: Ralph Leever, Venerable Dean; Harold "Lefty" Davis, Senior Dean; Perry Hosmer , Junior Dean ; John Skinner, Treasurer; Ken Bloom, Secretary; James Mahaffey, Rushing Chairman ; Ray Pettys, Steward.

I noticed an odd grouping of names around the bridge table the other day.

(Yes, ever y one h ere is still as "bridgehappy" as ever) . Playing the game were four "Rays" namely, Miller, Pettys, Austin and Kuehner. And giving helpful (???) hints over their respective shoul ders were four "Dons," Brothers Lund, Haxton, Hoeffel and Rader. Confusing, what?

Rushing really came off with a bang this quarter. Some of the outstanding events included a Smoker held on October 26 at the Northern Grill, with 25 rushees attending; a picnic at the University Country Club on October 27, featuring a spirited tab-football game and a fine magic show put on by "Doc" Dan Whitacre, the new chapter adviser; and a Victory Dance following the OSU-Missouri game on October 26. I wish all the alumni could have seen the house that night. The boys had really outdone themselves fixing and decorating the place, and it fairly shone. A giant floodlight on the front lawn gave the impression of a Hollywood premiere.

Flowers and vari-colored lights gave the interior of the house that "right" atmosphere ; the music was soft; and a lovely corsage of roses was presented to each girl as she arrived, giving that final touch of perfection for a perfect evening.

The results of these rushing events at the time of this writing, include some bills and eighteen new pledges. They are Ray Ahlsten, Carlton Beatley, Robert Beattie, Jim Bushman, Charles Cooper, Martin Cox, Dean Davis, Fred Ely, Ray Gilmore, Ted Haxton, Bunny Hoffman, Art Kuehn, Ray Steiner, Ray Miller, Charles Phillips, Ernest Schulz, Mel Stauffer and Dave Williams.

Oklahoma The Oklahoma Chapter is again in full swing. We started things off with the traditional rush week which is always held the week before enrollment starts.

This year there were twelve hundred boys going through rush; six hundred two were pledged. These were thr ee days full of plenty of action, and excitement was popping constantly.

Lyman Orr, Oklahoma State '37, was found at Lawton in the Oklahoma Tire and Supply Store, leading a quiet life after quitting the AAF. Clarence (Doc) Breedlove, Oklahoma State '26, is out of uniform and back at Cameron College, Lawton, as President.

Harold Schnorrenberg Oklahoma State '30, and Erwin Bergman, Oklahoma State '40, are prosperous business men down Oklahoma City way.

I understand that Lloyd Lunger, Oklahoma State '39, is conducting a flourishing furniture business in Arkansas City, Kansas.

The Grimsley brothers over Stillwater way are expanding their auto and tourist court businesses. Stop and see them as you enter from the north. They know where many of the gang are and what they are doing.

Rex Kenyon, an Oklahoma active, said that Kenneth Shilling, Oklahoma State '38, was a defense counsel for some Japs, LESTER B . BROWN. and saved the necks of several of them.

been doing a wonderful job. He has put our house on the campus in a big way. It has been our custom in the past to invite all of the sorority pledges over for dessert. We accomplished this pleasant task by inviting three sororities over each week. We hit the papers again last week by having a tea for our new house mother, Mrs. Lillian Caldwell. Guests included the presidents and hostesses of all fraternities and sororities on the campus along with the wives of the alumni and faculty.

The house has been completely redecorated. The inside was done in a very light cream with an extremely light grey trim. The floors downstairs were sanded and refinished, which made them very light. Along with this, we were able to obtain new carpets for the living room, hall and card room. The old carpets were used to carpet the stairs and halls on the second and third floors. The whole house is light inside which makes it very cheerful.

Acacia has also been doing its share in intramural activities. Jack Steen, who is our coach, has gotten all of the fellows out and in shape. So far we have won both of the football games we have played. We have enough fellows so that we will be well represented in all other activities. At the present time there are fifty-three of us.

We were glad to see Don Hartman who has been elected treasurer; Bill Valentine, our new secretary; Bob Gillespie and Edward Heard. Odell Stone, our venerable dean, is still going strong. The girls sit around all day and wonder how they can date that man.

Charles Kenyon, Pittsburgh; James Faux and Richard Gillespie, both from Shamokin, Pennsylvania. With us again is Kratz McHugh, back for post-grad work in fuel technology. Another very welcome addition to the house is Homer Buescher of Franklin. To say that their loss is our gain would be putting it mildly.

We hope that he likes it here as much as we enjoy having him. On campus, but not living in the house, are Brothers Ray Stein and Don Hallman, both happily married. Ray married Miss Alice Ford of Kentucky last spring, and Don suc¡ cumbed to Miss Carol Butler on July 26.

Election of officers was held at the first meeting with the following results: Venerable Dean, Bob Troxell; Senior Dean, George Nelson; Junior Dean, Oscar Lashley; Secretary, Richard Morgan; Treasurer, Leonard Weidner, Rushing Chairman, George Leedom.

The house was closed during the summer and rede.c orated inside and out. We are quite proud of it, and are deeply indebted to the local "Square and Compass" for having the work done. 0~1 campus during the summer session were Bob Troxell, Dave Sims, Johnny Jaffurs, Dick Wald and Stan Kruger. The latter, by the way, has also taken the fatal plunge. On June 8 he walked down the aisle with the very pretty Miss Mary Gifford of Lexington, Kentucky. Johnny Jaffurs is the proud father of a baby girl, Patsy, who, we hear, has already been rushed by several sororities. Johnny is now playing pro-football with the Washington Redskins.

Our bridge players are getting ready to defend the cup that they won in the interfraternity competition last spring. Judging by the heated arguments and the number of players, one might think that bridge had become a national sport.

Reigning champs of the house at present are Doug. Kutz and Bill Whitby.

Our household force is again augmented by our very able cook, Mrs. Grubb, who is back for her tenth year. During the war while the army occupied the house, she was rated the best cook on campus.

In our opinion, she is tops, not only as a cook but also as a willing adviser and able house historian.

Pythagoras will reign on October 26 when the four old pledges, Will Lutz, Curt Short, Richard and Rolf Wald, will be initiated. The last two, being identical twins, are a constant source of bewilderment to the rest of the house. Coming up on the social activities list is the Fall House Party on November 9, and an Alumni Tea during Homecoming week-end on October 19.

We will welcome any news of, or letters from, the alumni, and are looking forward to seeing any of you at any time. Best of luck to all, both in fraternity and in school work for the coming year.

Purdue With the fall term well under way, we here at Purdue are starting to get into the swing of things. The house is filled to

The Triad, Fall, 1946 over capacity. In order to take care of the large number of members returning from the armed forces, w~ have men living in the basement, and in the annex next door. There are over fifty men living in and outside of the house. It seems nice to have the house back to its prewar standard.

The entire Purdue Chapter greatly appreciates the help that the building association has given us over the summer.

With so many of the veterans returning, we had no idea where we could put them all. The building association has helped us by remodeling the chapter room. Partitions have been put across both ends of the room. At one end we have a dorm with five double decker beds, and at the other end is a study room that is at present accommodating four fellows. A lavatory has also been built in the basement.

The fellows living down in "The Hole," as they call it, don't seem to be minding it too much. The building association has purchased beds, blankets, pillows, desks, wardrobes, chests of drawers, silverware and plates, so that we could accommodate all the returning brethren. Without their help we would be at a loss to know what to do.

Many of the returned veterans have brought back with them some old traditions that have been forgotten since the beginning of the war. Their ideas have helped to unite the house. There are a great many different pledge classes represented in the house now. The combination of fellows from before and during the war makes it look like we will really go places this school year. We have a very competent group of officers in the house for this year, and things have been running quite smoothly with them on the job. Horth; House Manager, Tom Stieglitz; and Sentinel, Harold Luce.

During the summer Bob Blue, Harold Berry and Jim Cochran decided to take the fatal step-they got married. However, they don't seem to be any the worse for it. Bob Blue is living outside of the house now, but he stops around and sees us ever so often. He is going to school and instructing part time at the university.

Jim Cochran is living over on the other side of town in a garage that he ha.s re ¡ built. Jim has made this one-time garage into a very comfortable home. We wish these men all the happiness in the world in their new undertaking.

Happy John Steinebach and his wife are on the campus this year. He is going to school and she is working at the desk of one of the Women's Residence Halls. Because of her influential position she has been fixing the boys up with dates. Dates are greatly appreciated with the ratio approximately nine fellows to one girl.

29 We have a pretty good pledge class this year. It is composed of seven veterans: Don Pearcy, Park Ridge, illinois ; Eugene Warren, Minneapolis, Minnesota ; Dick Arnholter, Indianapolis, Indiana; Jim McCarty, Evansville, Indiana ; Paul Baynes, Richmond, Indiana ; David Hoban, Danville, Indiana; and Carl Kenninger, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Nash C. Pearcy, '21 EE, is the father of Don Pearcy, and Edward R. Warren, '21 EE, is Eugene's father. Both were Acacians here. It is quite a coincidence that old friends should have their sons get together as pledge brothers in their fraternity. Paul Baynes, one of the pledges, is the seventh Baynes in their family to come into the chapter. We have just about decided to call this place the "Baynes Chapter."

During the summer things have been Father quiet. The chapter was officially inactive, but there were quite a few fellows living in the house. They had to go out for their meals and pay their own expenses. There was nothing to do except study this summer (they say) as there were no women on campus.

Jim (Beat Up) Miller and Gene Baynes are both taking extra hours this semester so that they can graduate in February.

Jim is taking 24 2/ 3 hours and Gene is taking 22. One would never know it with the little studying they do. Pope has traded a jeep he brought back from Germany for a '42 Plymouth.

Elton Thompson put his pin out to Emma Hoffine last spring, and this fall he gave her a ring, so before long we will probably be hearing wedding bells.

Charlie Jarrett, the traveling secretary, was here from September 21-24. We were glad to have him around. He told us that he would be back to see us in time to see Purdue beat Indiana.

Elton Clodfelter and Grant Ward have gotten together and purchased a surplus airplane. They have been working on it for the last two months and say that they will have it in the air in another month.

On the night of October 2, we had a trade dinner and dance with the Gamma Epsilon Sorority. Everyone had a good ,t ime. The sorority is new on the campus and quite handy, being located right next door to the annex. So we are all looking forward to an up and coming year for our fraternity; socially, that is.

With all the returned veterans back in the house, and with such excellent leadership, it looks like the chapter will be right up on top this year.

HAROLD LucE

Syracuse More than a week before the official opening of the fall semester, the Syracuse chapter house was literally buzzing with activity. After a summer semester during which we were forced to live in various widely-separated rooming-houses, enthusiasm for occupying our own house once again was running high, and although we found a great deal of work to be done, progress was excellent, and at

present the house is in better shape than ever before.

During the summer, Al Howland, Bill Matthews, Bill Martin, and John Mitchell, whose brother, incidentally, was an Acacian at Purdue, were pledged. At present, rushing is in full swing, and Acacia is more than holding its own.

The Women of Acacia headed by Mrs. Enos, wife of our chapter adviser, were very helpful in getting the house ready for occupancy. Their gift of new drapes for the living room was greatly appreciated.

Late in the summer, the following officers were elected for the fall semester: Venerable Dean, Lenny Beil; Senior Dean, Nick Zauner; Junior Dean, Phil Rice; Secretary, Fred Lott, Jr.; and Treasurer, Ray Unger. In accordance with the recommendation of the National Conclave, we plan to create the new offices of rushing chairman and director of intramural sports.

Now that the Cornell and Penn State Chapters are once again on the active list, we hope to resume our prewar get-togethers with them. We are looking forward to seeing several of the Penn State brothers on the week-end of October 12 when their football team journeys to Syracuse to clash with the Saltine Warriors in a night game.

Our two married men, Bud Lyon and Frank Linton, have at last been able to establish homes for their families here in Syracuse. Since Frank already has one son and Bud two, Nick Zauner is seriously thinking of establishing an Acacia Kiddies Club in the near future.

Shortly after the doors of the house were first opened, we were pleasantly surprised by a visit from our former V.D., Bill Ulrich. Bill is now working for his Master's Degree in chemistry and was on his way to the University of Chicago, where he expects to spend at least a year.

Even more surprising was the arrival of Gordon Henderson, who, a very short time ago, was recuperating from a serious illness at an army hospital in New Mexico.

Gordie is now as good as new and plans to work for his Master's here on the Hill.

Funds for our war memorial are beginning to pour in. The planning committee which is working out the details, would appreciate any ideas or suggestions that our alumni may care to contribute.

Washington Washington started postwar operations with a very successful pledging season.

Those pledged so far are: Dave Fenton, Wilton Whistler, Clarence McOrdy, Charles Stover, Ben Dotson, Steve Richards, Bill Robinson, Oliver Heintzelman, Merton Box and Everett Blakely. We expect to continue intensive rushing operations for the next couple of weeks.

The officers for the fall and winter quarters are as follows: Venerable Dean, Willard Zellmer; Senior Dean, Gene Lewis; Housemanager, James Moran; Secretary, Gerald West; Junior Dean, George Warner; Junior Steward, John Dudley; Rushing Chairman, Jack Picard.

A considerable amount of improvement on the chapter house was accomplished this summer. First and second floors were sanded and refinished, and new carpeting placed in the hallways and on the stairs. Further improvement is planned in the future.

We plan an active social season this fall.

Plans are already being formulated for our first dance. Also, we are making plans for homecoming on October 26.

That is always a gala occasion and we expect a large alumni turnout along with song-fest participation and other activities. Acacia at Washington expects to have a busy and successful year.

GERALD WEST

Washington State With paint brushes flying, wax mops toiling, and everyone in each other's way, our house received a greatly needed face lifting. Most of the returning members and pledges were here a week or more ahead of schedule to get the house ready to welcome the new school year. New furnishings including study desks, linoleum for the kitchen floor, new curtains and ash-tray stands made their debut. The study rooms were either repainted or repapered, and many small touches were added to complete the picture-our Aca cia House, State College of Washington, for the year 1946-47.

The year has begun with a flying start.

Rush week was a series of successful meals prepared by our most prized possession, Mrs. Barker ("Mom"), meeting endless numbers of grand prospects, countless trips to the men's dorms, bringing back friends one tour after another to show them the house, and heated discussions, each evening to determine which rushees were preferred. The final result showed eleven new pledges which brought our house capacity to its full 31.

We are proud of the quality of our new pledges, and believe it was mainly due to our goal of h aving each old member and pledge bring back a personal buddy.

During the summer months, last semester's members, El Huntley, Verne Zellmer, Bob Anderson, Bob Woods, Marshall Dalrymple, Chester Bennett, Floyd Green, Frank Doherty, John Austin, Dick Kirsten, and old pledges William Gammie (from Saskatchewan, Canada ), J ack Dennis, Fred Williams and Art Lancaster, plus the old members now back, Theo Britt, Sherman Jensen, Howard Hopkins (Grad.), Bob Wright, Les Liebel and Don Hughes, all k ept their eyes open and returned with five house g uests who were later pledged. Good men like Don Skinner, John Veatch, Richard Hampton, Richard Ellett, Leroy Holcomb (Grad.) , Clark Hewitt (Grad.), Delmar Dow Arthur Evett and Bill Ganger have all f~llen victims. We lost our only married pledge of last semester to that busy character, the stork, as Martin Jensen was presented a double feature, twin girls.

The new officers for the semester are: Verne Zellmer, V.D.; El Huntley, that second-of-the-month caller; Bob Anderson, Senior Dean; Frank Doherty, Secretary; Chester Bennett, Junior Dean; Bob Bood, Junior Steward; Marshall Dalrymple, Correspondent; John Austin, Rush Chairman. Elections were held at the end of the spring semester for all the duties were on the shoulders of the five new members who opened the house. The term of the new officers will last until February.

Initiation of the four old pledges-Gammie, Dennis, Williams and Lancasterwill be held in the near future.

A full program of activities has been planned for the semester. In addition to the forthcoming initiation, will be dances, a Hallowe'en party, dinners (Founder's Day and a progressive dinner) , firesides and the like. Our social chairman, Chester Bennett, has big ideas and is seeing that they materialize.

Joint dances with the Kappa Delt's, the Delta Zeta's, Sigma Kappa's, Alpha Phi's, TKE's, Delta Upsilon's and the Phi Sigma Kappa's promise many pleasant affairs.

Exchange dinners with Kappa Delt and Alpha Delta Pi, a hay ride or two and a really "swish" formal will make this a year to remember.

Already others on the campus are beginning to talk of our house and its many popular dwellers. The war may have produced its Kilroy's and Smoe's, but now all of W.S.C. knows that "Fogelquist" is an Acacian. During a rally with all its yells, "Three for Fogelquist" could be heard coming from different parts of thE> cheering section. "Who is Fogelquist?" was the question of the day. Chester Bennett, disguised as an African hunter, stole our homecoming rally and was passed off as Fogelquist. "Chooster" is very active in school dramatics, and is constantly being called upon to use his many talents.

Lester Liebel, a past V.D., is a member of the Crimson Circle, past president of the Y.M.C.A. and the Grey "W" (an honorary for letter men).

Several are active in the I.K .'s (Intercollegiate Knights)-Dan Hughes, and Verne Zellmer, both Junior I.K.'s; Bob Allen and Jack Yoder, Sophomore I.K.'s; and John Stauffer and Herb Lowers, Freshmen.

Howard Hopkins, who completed his four years with high honors, is a member of the "AI Ag" and the Alpha Zeta, both agricultural honoraries. He is now doing graduate work in the department of animal husbandry.

The house is well represented in the music department. Don Hughes is a music major, a member of the school band and of the campus top dance band. Marshall Dalrymple is a member of the college choir and other vocal ensembles. Both Verne Zellmer and Don Hughes are members of Phi Mu Alpha, music honorary.

Masonry has a strong grip on the house in the presence of Don Hughes and Marshall Dalrymple, both 32nd degree Masons; Frank Ames, 3rd degree; and Art Lancaster who just received his first this summer.

Our chapter has had three visiting Acacians--James Crosby from the University of California and now an active associate of the Washington State Chapter, Bill Dexter from the University of Washington, and George H . Foster from Purdue, now a member of W.S.C. faculty.

Southern California The new group at the University of Southern California will have completed a year's planning for its charter in November, 1946. It began with five veteran students who were eager to form a fraternity chapter with the clean social and educational make-up of a simon-pure organization. The principles of Acacia met their ideals and work was started. A long-range plan was formulated and improved upon as time went by. New members were selected conservatively from recommendations from Masons or affiliation with Masonry.

Direct support has come in the past few months from Acacia alumni living in the Los Angeles area. The group is being counseled by prominent men active in Acacia. In October, Norm Hawes, Interfraternity Council President at Southern California, announced the group's acceptance of this budding Acacia Chapter as a campus fraternity. This was significant as Mr. Hawes stated at that time that campus fraternity officials there are encouraging only a conservative expansion of the fraternity system, being opposed to anything but a limited expansion of the existing system.

At the present time a house is being sought by the counselors who are making numerous contacts. They are meeting with surprising success to the point that discrimination in selecting the house in a crowded area appears possible. The group now holds its weekly meetings in the Student Union.

Howard Wagner, president, and Frank Johnson, ~<ecretary, attended the sessions of the Officers' Training School held in Chicago in August. The local group hopes that soon they will be in a position to petition the National Fraternity for a charter. At that time, request will be made of the California Chapter at Berkeley to initiate the neophytes.

Northwestern Acacia has really bounced back at Northwestern in a big way, and things up here at Lincoln and the Lake have hit peacetime stride again with our full quota of parties and social doings.

This quarter, we welcomed back many of our veteran brothers, which greatly enlarged our small wartime chapter, and with rush week reinstalled as an institution here at Northwestern, we added a pledge class of twenty-one to our three hold-over pledges, making a total of approximately seventy men.

Campuses Without Books May Schneider, manager of the University of Detroit bookstore, stared bleakly at a couple of browsing students and shrugged resignedly. "If you want a headache," she said quietly, "just try running a college bookstore for a few days." The door opened and for the fifth time that day the same chunky freshman entered. Miss Schneider eyed his eager approach and shook her head glumly. The boy's textbooks still had not arrived. Moreover, Miss Schneider had no idea when they would be ready.

The Detroit case was no exception.

The simple fact, harsh and bewildering to students on a thousand campuses last week, was that the nation was suffering from a textbook shortage as painful to student minds as the meat shortage was to their bellies.

With enrollments in all colleges, teacher colleges, extension courses, and junior colleges estimated between 1,800,000 and 1,900,000, about 18,000,000 books are needed for the 1946-4 7 term. Last year publishers supplied 10,180,000 books. The most optimistic estimate for this year, 13,500,000.

For the most part the shortage could be attributed to lack of materials, chiefly white paper and to some extent glue. (Reduction in slaughtering cattle brought a consequent reduction in by-products, of which glue is one.)

During the war textbook publishers were restricted to 75 per cent of their 1942 supply. Currently, the demand is about three times that amount according to Lloyd King, executive sec-

In consideration of the large number of returning men, it was thought advisable to hold a new election this month so that we might have officers who were fully representative of the chapter. Right now we are all busy planning for Homecoming, building a float and decorating the house. This work is being carried on under the capable leadership of Tom Damm. We are looking forward to this event with much anticipation, and hope to see many of our alumni here for the week-end.

Individually, as well as collectively, our men are keeping Acacia's name high among the fraternities at Northwestern.

Bill Brown is editorial chairman of the Daily Northwestern. Bob Beighley is a desk editor of that paper, and Dan Blue is a reporter. Don Ansel writes for N. U .'s Purple P arrot Magazine, and Jack Plattner and several other men are working on the Syllabus Yearbook. In addition, Sam Walker is doing us credit as a member of the cheer-leading squad, and five of our men are on the Wildcat Pep Council.

Add our vigorous intramural sports activities and you can see we have plenty keeping us busy here at N . U. this year, to say nothing of our numerous activities in the sorority quads.

out charge, for distribution to ex-GI's seeking higher education. During the summer a list of 2,270 titles was sent to colleges and universities; in September a second list of 698 was dispatched, followed this week by another of 400.

To cover the cost of handling the books from school to veteran, the VA agreed to pay any college sending in an order 25 cents a volume. A few requests came in-chiefly from the Southwest. Chief reasons for the coolness: an incorrect assumption by the colleges that they would have to keep a record of the books and retrieve them at term end; out-of-print books on the list, commitments of bookstores.

But government employes, eyeing the stacks of books in the Library of Congress basement, suggested a more vena~ excuse: Teacher-authors of textbooks were disinclined to forego royalties which they would collect on new books.

Shortage examples: At Harvard, Radcliffe, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology old stand-bys generally unavailable include: Scribner's "Selections from Plato," the Everyman edition of John Stuart Mills' "Utilitarianism," and one of the basic books in economics, "Statistical Methods" by F. C. Mills.

At Northwestern University a political-science professor requested a book for his classes and received only twenty copies for 500 students. In one course students were studying from mimeographed material.

University of Chicago students were able to get less than 75 per cent of needed books.

In New York, Columbia and New York University students invaded Brooklyn in a vain search for necessary textbooks.

Michigan State College ran into a shortage because it ordered books for an expected 10,000 students, only to discover the enrollment approached 13,000.

Texts Go Begging: While some wit suggested that college freshmen might do well to bone up on Flash Gordon and Superman, an overabundance of unwanted textbooks in Washington lent an ironical note to the situation.

Beginnin~ last June more than a million textbooks collected from 90 institutions which had Army and Navy wartime college-training courses were shipped to Washington. The War Assets Administration turned them over to the Veterans Administration with-
