The Designers Introduction PART 1 - Designers - Alphabetical by YACHT 1851-2024
This Section of Compendium organizes the known designer(s) for each yacht. The Designers Part 1 section lists the individuals by yacht, year, last name, proper first name, middle name or initial (if known), and role, enabling a researcher to easily see the progression of the designer from regatta to regatta. PART 2 - Designers - Alphabetical by DESIGNER 1851-2024
This Section of Compendium organizes the known designer(s) for each yacht. The Designers Part 2 section lists the individuals by last name, proper first name, middle name or initial (if known), their role, the yacht(s) they designed and the year of that design, enabling a researcher to easily see the progression of the individual from regatta to regatta. PART 3 - America's Cup Winning Designers - 1851-2024
This Section of Compendium lists the WINNING America's Cup Yacht - in order by year - and the principal DESIGNER(S) of that yacht.
In the mid-1800's, naval architects and yacht designers were, more often than not, sole practitioners, and were responsible for the entirety of the design and the oversight of the efforts of the builders of the yachts. As time went on, these one-man shops often became powerhouse partnerships such as the famed Sparkman & Stephens house that were responsible for so many successful designs. As we sailed into the 21st Century, the requirements of new technology led to the requirements of technologISTS , and we now list such specialist-designers as Performance Analysts, Appendage CFC developers, Software Programmers and Mechatronics Designers who would be unrecognizable to America's 1851 Designer George Steers. The "designer" of old has become the "Design Team" with scores of individuals. Among the greats listed here we find the names Daniel Andrieu, Edward Burgess, Edward Starling Burgess, Britton Chance, Laurie Davidson, Michael Drummond, Bruce Farr, Nathanael Herreshoff, Fredrick "Ted" Hood, Ian Howlett, Kurt Jordan, Ben Lexcen, Andre Maruic, William Mavogiannis, Bruce Nelson, Alan Payne, David Pedrick, Aaron Perry, Abraham Schank, Thomas Schackenberg, Johan Valentijin and Joseph VanDeusen - easily a stand-alone "hall of fame" of America's Cup yacht designers and contributers to the sport over the centuries.
NOTE:
This beige block Indicates that we, unfortunately, have been unable to determine and/or verify the Designer of this vessel. Research continues and COMPENDIUM will be updated as soon as possible.
Individual's Induction into the Herreshoff America's Cup Hall of Fame is noted as [2023]. Individual's Induction into the National Sailing Hall of Fame is noted as [N2023]. In addition to "The Designers" Compendium also includes Sections on "The Crews," "The Owners," "The Officials," and "The Builders." Editor's Note: Every effort was taken to assure accuracy in the listing of America's Cup designers. Because the underlying data is from historical records, from time-to-time errors were found - often when there are several generations of sailors with similar names (i.e. Jr., II, III, Sr., etc.) and the occasional spelling of a name. Feel free to help to improve this important historical record by sending any known omissions or errors to us.

An Excing Documentary by Author Mark Robinson Holland
Attack On the
Cup
Attack on the Cup: The Story of the Conspiracy to Destroy the world’s Oldest International Sporting Prize – America’s Cup – and the efforts to save it. In March 1997, a New Zealand Tribesman who was frustrated with perceived aspects of the upcoming 2001 America’s Cup competition viciously attacked the priceless 150-year-old trophy with a sledgehammer. Attack on the Cup is the most comprehensive look at the attack, the arrest and trial, the sentencing and the reaction to the assault. Includes never-before published police photos and trial testimony. The book also covers the restoration of the Cup in London by Garrard and the aftermath. A must-read for all America’s Cup fans.
Mark Robinson Holland is an America’s Cup historian and researcher. Aer rering as a successful Architect Emeritus, he began the mul-year research project that culminated in the publicaon of America’s Cup Compendium: a record of every yacht, yachtsman, owner, designer, builder and yacht club, in addion to logs of every America’s Cup final race regata and each observaon, qualifying, trial and eliminaon race that led up to the finals during each “Cup” year. Research for Compendium has taken Mark thousands of research hours since beginning in March 2020, and visits to countless Marine Libraries in the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Mark is married and lives in Methuen, Massachusets USA. AMERICASCUPCOMPENDIUM.COM
