Introduction Of all the facts and figures, of all the yachts, of all the thousands of yards of sailcloth and miles of rigging, of all the prizes and hundreds of bottles of champagne drunk and sprayed, it is the PEOPLE of the races to win America's Cup that are most important - for without the dedication of these souls over the past 1 3/4 centuries, we would have none of the intrique, the lore, the "what ifs," and the history that this "friendly competition between foreign nations" first penned in the original Deed of Gift written so long ago has given us. When I first began the years of research for America's Cup Compendium in 2020, one of the basic principles I tried to adhere to was to never allow the sailors, the owners, the builders, the officials and the other so-valued participants to ever become merely a footnote to the history of a silver cup. What hurt me most was the often-felt brick wall I hit in attempting to find the names of the crew members during various sailings. Beginning back in the RYS Regatta on August 22, 1851, at Cowes, Isle of Wight in England when the upstart yacht "America" won the race, history has somehow lost a valuable component to the historical record - to wit, there were actually six British sailors helping to sail the winning boat loaned to the America Syndicate off a British yacht named "Suprise ." As much has been made of the "wild cheering and doffing of caps" on America when she came within hailing distance of Her Majesty's yacht, apparently half the America's crew-de-jour were actually Brits! But alas, we do not know, nor can we ever credit these sailors for the contribution to what has become the world's oldest interntional continuouslychallenged prize in sports. The Crews PART 1 - America's Cup Crews 1851-2024 This Section of Compendium organizes the known crewmembers for each yacht, organized by last name, and further by year, yacht name and their crew position. The Crews section lists the sailors by last name, proper first name, middle name or initial (if known), and any title, enabling a researcher to easily see the progression of the individual from regatta to regatta. PART 2 - Women's and Youth Crews 2024 This NEW Section of Compendium documents the organizes the known crewmembers for each yacht, organized by last name, and further by year, yacht name and their crew position. The Crews section lists the sailors by last name, proper first name, middle name or initial (if known), and any title, enabling a researcher to easily see the progression of the individual from regatta to regatta. PART 3 - YACHTS OF THE AMERICA'S CUP This Section provides a reference list of every yacht which competed, (or intended to compete) either in preliminary, trial, elimination or Match Racing in pursuit of America's Cup from 1851 - 2024 PART 4 - America's Cup Crews 1851-2024 ALPHABETICAL by YACHT This Section of Compendium organizes the known crewmembers for each yacht, organized by last name, and further by year, yacht name and their crew position. The Crews section lists the sailors by last name, proper first name, middle name or initial (if known), and any title, enabling a researcher to easily see the progression of the individual from regatta to regatta. PART 5 - Women's and Youth America's Cup Crews 2024 ALPHABETICAL by YACHT This NEW Section of Compendium organizes the known crewmembers for each yacht, organized by last name, and further by year, yacht name and their crew position. The Crews section lists the sailors by last name, proper first name, middle name or initial (if known), and any title, enabling a researcher to easily see the progression of the individual from regatta to regatta. It should be noted that all yachts were Same Design AC40.
Individual's Induction into the Herreshoff America's Cup Hall of Fame is noted as [2024]. Individual's Induction into the National Sailing Hall of Fame is noted as [N2024]. There are currently over 9,133 entries, covering over 5,162 yachtsmen and women! Special Feature of Electronic Version As they become available, brief bios are being added to Compendium, indicated by a small blue "tick mark" in the upper right corner of the sailor's last name. These entries are otherwise hidden. The bios are generally brief and are intended to better identify the sailor, rather than to provide an individual's entire life story. In addition to "The Crews" Compendium includes Sections on "The Owners," "The Officials," and "The Builders." Editor's Note: Every effort was taken to assure accuracy in the listing of America's Cup crewmembers. Because the underlying data is from historical records, from time-to-time errors were found - often when there are several generations of sailors with similar names (i.e. Jr., II, III, Sr., etc.) and the occasional spelling of a name. Feel free to help to improve this important historical record by sending any known omissions or errors to us.
