The Artistic Performance

‫فن و أداء التغرودة‬

Al Taghrooda is traditional chanted poetry that has been composed by poets and recited by men traveling on camel or horseback, it serves as a form of entertainment to pass a long journey.

Al Taghrooda begins with the improvisation of a short poem, usually recited and repeated by other travellers. The poems are performed individually or in groups by camel riders. The themes of the poetry include love, friendship, praise of family, friends or tribal leaders.

Al Taghrooda is performed through an exchange of poetry between two groups; the leading group chants the first line of a short poem and the second group responds in harmony. This poetic dialogue between the two groups goes on with an exchange of subjects and expression of feelings that the singer wants to convey to a loved one, relative, friend, or companion.

History of Al Taghrooda The historical roots of Al Taghrooda can be traced back to pre-Islam, later on it flourished during the Umayyad period (6th century), and became an archive of the language. During the Abbasid period (8th - 13th century), it was named El-Ar’giz, and its practice declined in popularity. The art form flourished once again in the modern era in the Arabian Gulf region, especially in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Today, Al Taghrooda has retained all its traditional characteristics despite having a

Did You Know? It is likely that the oldest known Emirati Taghrooda dates back to 300 years ago. Al Majid bin Dhaher wrote it on the death of his beloved camel, named Ekhtilah. It is said that the poet would gather leaves from a Ghaf tree to feed and cure the sick camel. He wrote the following lines following her death: "If the Ghaf was of good, it would've done good to Ekhtilah She passed away, and left him in his sorrow"

Al Taghrooda and Travelling The Bedouin community of the UAE have proudly performed this art for centuries and continues to do so to this day. Al Taghrooda was practised while travelling through the desert on the back of camels and horses in search of water and grazing fields. The short rhythmic verses were in time with the footsteps of the camels or horses, and it made the long and often difficult journey seem shorter. Al Taghrooda poems composition follow the classical Rajaz style, which is one of the oldest and simplest metres of Arabic poetry. The short structure is defined by a repeating rhythm and sound, which is in sync with the speed of the camel's amble or the horse's trot.

Did You Know? In the past, the people of the Emirates living along the coast would travel to the oases to escape the summer heat. This seasonal activity was known as 'Al Meqayth'.

The poets are respected for carrying on the tradition of Al Taghrooda and orally preserving history through poetry. There are currently around 300 Al Taghrooda poets living in Abu Dhabi today. Women also perform Al Taghrooda, and often compose their poems while carrying out their daily chores, however there are only a few female Taghrooda poets practicing today.

Al Taghrooda, a Living Heritage Over the last century, Al Taghrooda has significantly evolved due to social and economic transformations in the region. Al Taghrooda deals with traditional and modern topics, and is recited at many occasions, such as weddings, honouring tribal guests, and national celebrations. Some forms of Al Taghrooda have been used in other traditional arts, such as Al Ayala and Al Wannah. It has evolved to become closer to modern poetry, which is based on poetic metres and not traditionally chanted.

Did You Know? Al Wannah is a type of poetry which is sung in a sad, nostalgic tone. It was often performed while traveling, or while seated in groups. The performer places a hand on his cheek as he is singing, leans on a stick and closes his eyes, and other Bedouins may participate by repeating the last verse of his poem.

Can you identify which of the pictures below is Al Wannah, Al Ayala and Al Taghrooda?

Al Taghrooda themes Al Taghrooda is characterised by improvised speeches which sets it apart from other poetry. Some of the topics include reproach, wisdom, love, social issues or even as requests presented to the ruler, however, the most popular topic is of camels. The poet describes his camel in hopes it will win one of the highest ranks in races, along with other topics, such as challenges or satire of the enemy, or stirring enthusiasm and patriotic praise for his nation. In the Taghrooda of Saeed bin Ateej Hamli, he describes the battle in which the British were defeated after an attack on Dubai in 1910. Al Taghrooda is performed in the Emirates mostly by the Bedouin community, especially in Al Dhafra in the western region of Abu Dhabi, and by tribes known for raising camels, such as the Bani Yas tribe. Al Taghrooda performances take place at camel markets, camel races and among camel breeders in the mountain areas of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, as well as in the farming villages.

Inscription of Al Taghrooda in UNESCO The United Arab Emirates successfully inscribed Al Taghrooda in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012, in cooperation with the Sultanate of Oman. The UAE undertakes many efforts to maintain this art, through encouraging its performance in weddings and national events, activating it in camel racing, and launching Al Taghrooda competitions in traditional festivals and community events. The UAE also inscribed other elements with UNESCO, including Falconry, Al Sadu (traditional weaving), Al Majlis (open councils), Gahwa (Arabic coffee), and traditional
