BMWʼs huge battery order adds to EU controversy Munich-based BMW ordered e-car batteries worth billions of euros from Chinese manufacturer CATL for its planned electric cars, German business daily Handelsblatt reported. In an interview for the newspaper, the carmakerʼs chief executive, Harald Krüger, confirmed the deal, while Reuters reported that in return for the order, CATL had agreed to build a special battery cell factory near the German city of Erfurt to support BMW. Observers remarked the carmakerʼs dealran afoul of European Commission efforts to cultivate an EU producer of battery cells. Krüger for his part argued that a European producer would only make sense if it were

competitive, adding that for now BMW needed a supplier "whoʼs already on the market." His comment followed earlier statements saying that BMWʼs top priority was to have a battery supplier that was nearby. Put off by low margins? EU Energy Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, as well as several heads of government including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have recently thrown their weight behind a European Unionbased producer, warning that it would not be a good idea for automakers inside the bloc to be wholly dependent on predominantly Asian suppliers like China and South Korea.

Cologne breaks ground on new Jewish Museum The cornerstone for Cologneʼs future Jewish Museum was laid Thursday in a ceremony attended by regional politicians and members of the architectural team. The museumwill go by the nickname MiQua, which comes from the word "mikveh," a ritual purification bath in Judaism. It will be built on and underneath the square where the cityʼs historic town hall stands, which is the site of Cologneʼs historic Jewish quarter from the Middle Ages. The museum will highlight Cologneʼs general history from 1424 onwards, with a specific

focus on the cityʼs Jewish history. "No other German city has such long ties to Jewish history as Cologne," Armin Laschet, the conservative premier of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), said at Thursdayʼs ceremony, adding that few people are aware that the roots of Jewish life in the city date back some 1,700 years. Cologneʼs Jewish communityis considered the oldest north of the Alps, according to the present day congregationʼs website. The first mentions of the community go back to 321 A.D.

US-Mexico border scandals sink bilateral ties to historic low "Even for building a wall you need Mexican workers," Mexicoʼs richest man and entrepreneur Carlos Slim said when US President Donald Trump took office in Washington. This seemingly relaxed attitude, the belief that many of Trumpʼs campaign promises wouldnʼt turn out that bad, has completely dissipated in Mexico by now. Trump has ceaselessly humiliated the USʼs southern neighbor not just during his campaign, but also during his first year in office. The building of a wall along the Mexican borderto keep out illegal immigrants and curtail the drug trade is one of Trumpʼs most important campaign promises. "Even before his victory, Trump accused Mexico of sending criminals, rapists and drug dealers to the US, and he has stuck with this position," Washington-based Mexican journalist Gregorio Meraz tells DW.
