Lost dog rescued after spending 11 days in German Alps A German holidaymaker has been reunited with her dog after it went missing for 11 days in Berchtesgaden National Park on the German border with Austria. Eight-year-old mongrel Barry escaped from his owner on August 12, while they were descending from the Kärlingerhaus mountain lodge — which can only be reached on foot — to the Königssee Lake. A team of national park rangers searched for the hound over several days after his barks were heard by hikers and local residents. But they were unable to trace him. Over the subsequent days, his barks became weaker and were heard less often, leading rescuers to presume that his health was weakening. On Thursday, they deployed a thermal imaging camera and set off on the Sagerecksteig trail, which runs through the park, in a final attempt to track down the pet.

ʼGreatest American hero of the last 50 yearsʼ US Senator John McCain dead at 81:

John McCain, a war hero and one of the most respected US legislators in recent memory, has died. He had a clear view of Americaʼs role in the world, but his most crucial vote had nothing to do with foreign policy. US Senator John McCain, a former presidential candidate and Vietnam War hero, died Saturday after losing his battle with brain cancer, his office said in a statement. "Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018. With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family," the statement read, noting that the Republican senator had "served the United States of America faithfully for 60 years." The McCain family announced Friday that the senator had chosento discontinue his cancer treatment. On July 25, 2017, a week after disclosing his cancer diagnosis, McCain returned to the Senate floor, where he had been serving for 30 years. He delivered a remarkable speech — one that in many ways summed up what he believed in and stood for throughout his unique military and political career. "What greater cause could we hope to serve than helping keep America the strong, aspiring, inspirational beacon of liberty and defender of the dignity of all human beings and

their right to freedom and equal justice?" he asked in the widely praised address. If almost anyone else had posed the question, it could have come across as heavy-handed or corny; coming from the widely respected McCain, it distilled his decades of service and purpose in life. Americaʼs unique role in the world was McCainʼs mantra, said James Jeffrey, the US special representative to Syria, who previously served under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama as deputy national security adviser and ambassador to Turkey and Iraq. He first met McCain in 1990 at what is today called the Munich Security Conference, where McCain traditionally led the US delegation. "Even then it was clear that he had an insight into Americaʼs role in the world and the way the world worked that is unlike any American official — including the two presidents that I worked directly for — that I have ever experienced," said Jeffrey, who called McCain the "greatest American hero of the last 50 years."

Emmerson Mnangagwa sworn in as Zimbabweʼs president Emmerson Mnangagwa was inaugurated as Zimbabweʼs president in his own right on Sunday, days after the Constitutional Court dismissed the main oppositionʼs claim that his July 30 election win was rigged. Mnangagwa previously held a series of cabinet portfolios under Robert Mugabeʼs presidency. He went on to replace Mugabe nine months ago, after the strongman resigned under military pressure. Mnangagwa took the oath of office for a five-year term in front of thousands of supporters in Harareʼs national stadium."I Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa swear that as president of the republic of Zimbabwe I will be faithful to Zimbabwe (and) will obey, uphold and defend the constitution of Zimbabwe." Sundayʼs ceremony was presided over by Chief Justice Luke Malaba, who along with eight other Constitutional Court judges had, last week, dismissed the oppositionʼs petition against Mnangagwaʼs election win.
