Hundreds of civilians have fled the northwestern Syrian province of Idlibahead of the Syrian regimeʼs imminent military action in the rebelʼs last major bastion. The Syrian government has vowed to retake the province, which has been held by the opposition since 2015. Idlib, which is largely controlled by Hayat Tahrir alSham, an al-Qaida-affiliated Islamist alliance, is home to some three million people – around half of them displaced from other parts of the wartorn country. Aid agencies and human rights groups warned of a major humanitarian crisis should Bashar Assadʼs regime launch a military offensive against Idlibʼs rebels. The leaders of Iran, Russia and Turkey are holding talks in Tehran on Friday to discuss the situation in Idlib and find ways to avert a possible humanitarian disaster.
After Chemnitz, poll shows east-west split on migration There was a marked difference between Germanyʼs western states and those in the east on whether concerns about migration were being taken seriously by the German government, according to a DeutschlandTrend survey published on Thursday. Worries about the governmentʼs approach to migration were high across the board, with 49 percent of Germans overall feeling that the matter was not being properly addressed. However, there was a stark difference in responses, with 46 percent of respondents in the former West German states and 66 percent of respondents in the former East German states saying they were not satisfied.
US actor Burt Reynolds — who starred in several of the most successful films of the 1970s — has died at the age of 82. The veteran actor died at a hospital in Florida, his manager Erik Kritzer told film industry magazine The Hol‐ lywood Reporter. Reynolds was reportedly taken to hospital after suffering from a heart attack, according to the celebrity news website TMZ. His early career included television appearances in classic television shows including "Gunsmoke" and various spaghetti westerns. By the 1970s he was a leading man who starred in renowned films including the landmark thriller "Deliverance" and a number of comedies including "The Cannonball Run," "Smokey and the Bandit," andMel Brooksʼ "Silent Movie." Several of his films turned out to be the biggest cinema attractions of the 1970s and 80s, and at the peak of his career, Reynolds was one of the best-paid actors in the film business. From football to film In his youth, Reynolds had hoped to become a professional football player, but his
hopes were dashed when he was injured in a car crash. He started acting after enrolling in junior college and moved to New York, where he began to work in stage and television roles, making his film debut in 1961. Well-known for his trademark mustache, Reynolds experienced a career downturn in the 1980s. He made a dramatic comeback in 1997, when he was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for his part in the film "Boogie Nights." It was the first and only Academy Award nomination that the longtime lead actor ever received — for a role, playing a porn director, that he despised. Twitter permanently bans Alex Jones and Infowars Alex Jones, the US far-right conspiracy theorist famously known for describing the Sandy Hook school shooting as a hoax, was banned from Twitter permanently on Thursday. The move comes a day after Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, had appeared before a congressional hearing where Republican lawmakers questioned him over alleged bias against conservative voices on the social platform. The company made the announcement on its @TwitterSafety account "Today, we permanently suspended @realalexjones and @infowars from Twitter and Periscope." The ban follows similar actions taken by Apple, YouTube, and Facebook, wholast month took down podcastsand channels from Jones, citing community standards. While Apple and Youtube issued a permanent ban, Facebook banned him for a short period. Twitter alsotemporarily suspendedJonesʼs account, which touts 900,000 followers, for a one week period.
