World leaders arrive for G20 summit The G20 summit is supposed to focus on development and infrastructure

The G20 summit is supposed to focus on development and infrastructure. But Jamal Khashoggiʼs death, the war in Yemen, a US-China trade war and the Russia-Ukraine conflict are also expected to be major talking points.

Man receives life sentence for murder of girl 27 years ago A German court on Friday handed a life sentence to a 66-year-old man convicted of abducting a 10-year-old girl — named only Stephanie in keeping with German privacy laws — from a park in the city of Weimar before sexually abusing and murdering her. The sentence given by the court in the eastern city of Gera was in accordance with the demands of prosecutors, who said the accused had wanted to get rid of the girl after abusing her and killed her by throwing her off a 48-meter-high (157-foot) motorway bridge crossing a valley.

Another 51 whales die in latest New Zealand mass stranding Whales continue to die on New Zealandʼs beaches, as a new mass stranding on the remote Chatham Islands on Thursday killed 51 pilot whales. Over 90 cetaceans beached themselves on Thursday at Hanson Bay, of which 51 died, the countryʼs Department of Conservation said. Staff found that 40 of the whales had managed to return to the water. The Chatham Islands had witnessed New Zealandʼs largest recorded stranding in 1918, which involved 1,000 whales.

World leaders arrived Thursday in the Argentine capital ofBuenos Aires ahead of the first-ever G20 summitin South America. The three agenda priorities for the Group of 20 are the future of work, infrastructure for development and sustainable food.Trade will also play a major roleas the United States, Canada and Mexico finalize their continental trade agreement. But the globeʼs largest economies have many other issues to discuss, with leaders holding their peers accountable for the worldʼs current conflicts. Saudi Arabiaʼs Crown Prince, Mohammed Bin Salman, is to make his first significant appearance overseas sincethe killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the countryʼs consulate in Istanbul. Several leaders, including British Prime Minister Theresa May, Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to discuss Khashoggiʼs murder with the 33year-old Saudi ruler. Turkeyʼs Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has condemned Saudi Arabia over the incident, is also in attendance. The one major figure not expected to sit down with the Saudi crown prince is US President Donald Trump, who said earlier this month thathe will not punish Riyadh for Khashoggiʼs killing. Saudi Arabia has denied that bin Salman played a role in the death of the Washington Post columnist, who was a critic of the crown prince. Bin Salman is also expected to be pressed on the war in Yemen, where hehas been accused of war crimesby in-

ternational NGO Human Rights Watch. On Wednesday, Argentine legal authorities took initial action to consider prosecuting him for alleged crimes against humanity. Vladimir Putin may also get a similar grilling over the Sea of Azov conflictwhere on Sunday Russia fired three Ukrainian navy ships and seized the vessels along with24 Ukrainian seamen. Trump canceled his meeting with the Russian president, just hours after telling reporters he would likely sit down with Putin. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she planned to press Putin on the issue, telling aUkrainian business forum in Berlinon Thursday, "We can only resolve this in talks with one another because there isno military solution to all of these conflicts." Trade will be a focal point for the United States at the G20. The US, Canada and Mexico are expected to signthe new United States-MexicoCanada Agreementdesigned to replace the current NAFTA trade deal. Trump is also scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping with theUS and China locked in a trade dispute. This year, the US has levied between 10 percent and 25 percent tariffs on Chinese goods — worth approximately $250 billion (€219 billion) — and China has raised its own tariffs in retaliation. However, US tariffs are set to ramp up unless the two leaders can come to an agreement on trade. On Thursday, Trump said he was "very close" to making a deal with China, but added, "I donʼt know if I want to do it."

Marriott data breach hits 500 million guests

Ukraine bars Russian men aged 16-60

Unknown hackers breached the network of the Marriott hotel chain and stolen data on around 500 million people, the company has said. The data included passport numbers, email accounts, and even some credit card info. A hacking attack on the Marriott hotel chain affected around half a billion customers, the firm said on Friday, after confirming a massive breach in the Starwood reservation database. In some cases, hackers may have obtained guestsʼ credit card numbers and the cardsʼ expiration dates. Although the credit card data would be encrypted, Marriott said they could not rule out that the hackers might prove able to decode it.

Ukraine announced on Friday that it was restricting entry into the country, barring male Russian nationals between the ages of 16 and 60. The move marked the latest escalation of tensions between the two the countries after Russia stopped several Ukrainian shipsanddetained 22 of its sailors. "As of today, entry is restricted for foreigners — in the first instance for male citizens of the Russian Federation age 16 to 60," said Border patrol chief Petro Tsyhyakal after meeting with President Petro Poroshenko. The only exceptions, according to Tsyhyakal, would be "humanitarian cases."

ʼDefender of Srebrenicaʼ Naser Oric acquitted of war crimes Naser Oric, a Bosniak military leader once tasked with defense of Srebrenica, was cleared of crimes against Serb prisoners on Friday in Sarajevo. The ex-military leader and his co-defendant Sabahudin Muhic werecharged with killing Serb prisoners in villagers around Srebrenicain 1992, years before a Serb attack on the town would end with a massacre of some 8,000 Bosniak men and boys. The 51year-old was detained in Switzerland on a warrant from Serbia in 2015. However, the Swiss authorities decided to extradite them to his native Bosniawhere a probe against him was also underway. Oric was put on trial and eventually acquitted in October 2017. Subsequently, the prosecution managed to overrule this decision and secure a retrial. The chief prosecutor said the verdict was based on "imaginary evidence" and accused the judge of delivering a different version of the verdict compared to the written document.

Montenegro detains opposition leader Nebojsa Medojevic outside parliament A police squad detained Montenegro government critic Nebojsa Medojevic as he was heading home from the parliament early on Friday, following a lengthy parliamentary session. "Police were out in force outside the parliament, they were waiting — we didnʼt know who they were waiting for, but we knew something was going on," said lawmaker Slaven Radunovic from Medojevicʼs Democratic Front (DF) party in video published on Facebook. Medojevic "got in the car with me and we started off home […] when a police car cut in front of us and Nebojsa was arrested," Radunovic added. "It was said that they have some kind of a warrant, we donʼt know what this is about." Another opposition deputy, Milan Knezevic, was still hiding in the building to avoid detainment. Earlier this year, Medojevic publicly accused Montenegro special prosecutor Milivoje Katnic of taking a €100,000 ($113,670) bribe from a former mayor of Podgorica in order to keep him out of jail. Following the Friday incident, authorities said Medojevic was detained for his refusal to testify in the probe which was triggered in the wake of his statement. Medojevicʼs claims were backed by Knezevic, who now faces detainment on similar grounds. 2

Caravan migrants at US-Mexico border begin hunger strike They want to put pressure on US and Mexican authorities to allow them to apply for asylum

Stuck at the border for three weeks, a handful of the 6,000 migrants in the caravan are fasting in protest. A group of Central American migrants who are camped out at the US-Mexico border began a hunger strike on Thursday. They said they want to pressure theUS to allow them to apply for asylum, but are also protesting Mexican authorities who are blocking the caravanʼs way north. The group of protesters is part of the more than 6,000 migrants, mostly from Honduras, who have travelled by caravan towards the United States in the hope of applying for asylum and fleeing vio-

French prime minister to meet ʼyellow vestʼ protesters French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is to meet with some protestersʼ representatives on Friday, French media said, as the country prepares for a third weekend of protests over rising taxes. Philippe will be joined by Environment Minister Francois de Rugy at the meeting with spokespeople for the so-called ʼyellow vests,ʼ the first time since demonstrationsstarted two weeks agoas protests against a fuel tax hike. Philippe said on Tuesday that he was ready to meet protesters, adding: "What they say includes a lot of very legitimate demands that must be heard." A meeting on Friday between Franceʼs minister for overseas territories, Annick Girardin, and fuel-tax protesters on the French island of Reunion ended abruptly after some be-

lence and poverty in their home countries. They are now stuck at the border city of Tijuana, Mexico. Many of those taking part in the hunger strike are women. "Since no one is listening to us, weʼve decided as a womenʼs movement... to launch a hunger strike," said Claudia Miranda, from Honduras, at an improvised press conference in Tijuana. The women attempted to set up a picket in front of the border immigration offices, but were blocked by police. gan calling loudly for the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron. Activists have called for further rallies on Parisʼ famed Champs-Elysees boulevard, where a demonstration last weekendwas marred by violence. The demonstrations in France have grown from protests by motorists angry at having to pay more for gas into a movement drawing in farmers, whitecollar workers, retirees and others concerned about the countryʼs high cost of living.

Nazi-looted art: Why are restitutions still the exception? Historians estimate that more than 5 million items have changed hands inappropriately during the Second World War in Europe. But despite the dimension of the crime, the question of works that were looted from Jew-

Homophobia: What is sport doing to combat it? Sport is often seen – and sold – as one of lifeʼs great levellers, a beacon of meritocracy in societies in which ability is often trumped by nepotism or vested interests. But, despite the perception, evidence suggests that, in one area at least, the goal of equality remains a pipe dream. The first results of a 5,500-person European Union-wide study, conducted and published earlier this month by the German Sport University in Cologne (DSHS), found that nine of 10 respondents from the LGBTI community believe sport has a problem with homophobia and transphobia. The most common way this prejudice is experienced is through derogatory slurs (82 percent of those surveyed) and sexuality-based discrimination (75 percent) while one in five respondents reported violent altercations and more than a third "physical transgressions." Professor Ilse HartmannTews, who was part of the DSHS team that conducted the study, told DW that, although it was early days in analyzing the results, experiences varied widely across the 28 EU nations and that sporting bodies needed to do more to address such concerns.

ish owners remained the elephant in the room for much of the 20th century. It was only in 1998 that representatives of 44 countries convened in Washington D.C. to establish a set of principles to help descendants reclaim their familyʼs art. The goal of the non-binding "Washington Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art" was "to complete by the end of this century the unfinished business of the middle of the century," declared Stuart Eizenstat, the US official who hosted the conference. The guidelines were praised as revolutionary at the time. However, 20 years later, "The Washington Principles have been a failure," says historian Marc Masurovsky. Masurovsky is the cofounder of the Holocaust Art Research Project (HARP), which was established in 1997. Through HARP, he aimed to focus on archival research, and he unwillingly became a restitution activist through his work. He says he can name a dozen cases off the top of his head of claimants who are still seeking justice.

Reasons to visit the Christkindlesmarkt The Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg is very traditional

Now is the time of Christmas markets. In Germany there are some 2,500 - ranging from trashy to romantic. Known and loved the world over Every year more than two million visitors, including many tourists from around the world, stroll across the Christkindlesmarkt - the main Christmas market in the heart of Nuremberg. The gothic Frauenkirche church from the 14th century lends the perfect backdrop to the festive atmosphere. The market opens on December 1th, and remains open to visitors until the December 24th. Sausage fun

What would a Christmas market be without food stalls? A typical local specialty, but loved internationally, is the Nuremberg Bratwurst. Itʼs only as long as a finger and fits perfectly into a bread roll. They are traditionally served as "Drei in an Weggla" which means "three in a bun". The sausages are protected and only those made within the city can call themselves "Nürnberger Rostbratwurst".

An Indianʼs first German Christmas market Moving to Germany from India, I anticipated that I would hate the harsh winter weather which would be a complete contrast to what I was used to from the tropics. What I couldnʼt have predicted however was how much I would fall in love with wintertime in Germany. The love affair started on a fateful November day as I stood in the middle of a Christmas market in Cologne. Wearing my warm boots, woolen gloves and thick scarf, I was all set to dive into the wonderful thrills a Christmas market has to offer. Christmas is not a festival celebrated by Hindus, but since some of my closest friends are Christians, I grew up singing carols and taking part in the traditions. Christmas in India is a simple affair with small parties, a few shops in the market selling ornaments, bakeries preparing lots of rich plum or traditional fruit cake. The highlight is always the midnight mass at church on the eve of Christmas. By comparison, these elaborate German markets add a whole new dimension to Christmas.

How German women obtained the right to vote 100 years ago Germanyʼs law enabling female suffrage came into effect on November 30, 1918. A look at the activists who contributed to this achievement and why thereʼs still much to be done in the country to claim equal rights. Men are too emotional to vote, feminist US author Alice Duer Miller wrote back in 1915. "Their conduct at baseball games and political conventions shows this, while their innate tendency to appeal to force renders them particularly unfit for the task of government," the US activist argued in her book Are Women People? She listed four more arguments why men should be barred from voting, in an ironic response to arguments just as

absurd that were used to forbid women from voting at the time. Her essay was part of a increasingly louder movement protesting discrimination against women. n 1791, French playwright and womenʼs rights activist Olympe de Gouges wrote the "Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen" — and her demands and ideas led to her arrest and beheading at the guillotine two years later. Some visionaries demanded equality for women very early on, and Olympe de Gouges was one of them, says legal historian Anna Katharina Mangold, adding however that the womenʼs movement only developed as a political movement in the mid-19th century.

Champions League: Schalke lose, but make last 16

Before a ball was even kicked in Portugal, Schalke secured the result they wanted. Galatasarayʼs defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow left the Turkish side four points behind Schalke with just one game to play, securing the Bundesliga clubʼs spot in the Champions League last 16. Domenico Tedesco made five changes to the starting lineup, but Schalke eventually succumbed to the better side. Ralf Fährmann made a strong save at the end of a fairly even opening quarter of an hour, pushing away a powerful half-volley from Moussa Marega. Three minutes later, Fährmann stretched even further to claw out another special effort from Marega.

Steph Curry: Golden State Warriors star helps young girl wear his trainers

NBA superstar Steph Curry has come to the aid of a young fan who couldnʼt find a pair of his basketball trainers for her. Nine-year-old Riley wrote to the Golden State Warriors player as she was "disappointed" there were no ʼCurry 5ʼ for sale under the girlsʼ section of the Under Armour website, but they were available for boys. "I know you support girl athletes because you have two daughters and you host an all girls basketball camp," said Riley in apost from her dad shared on social media."I hope you can change this." Three-time NBA champion and father-of-three Curry is an advocate of womenʼs rights. 6

Aleksandar Kolarovʼs free kick stunner secures Serbia win over Costa Rica A brilliant second half free kick from captain Aleksandar Kolarov led Serbia to a deserved win over Costa Rica. Serbia were wasteful in front of goal but did enough to secure three vital points in Group E. Another World Cup day, another sublime freekick. If Cristiano Ronaldo’s ice-cold effort tosnatch a point against arch-rivals Spain on day two was the current goal of the tournament front-runner, the Portuguese may have just met his match. Aleksandar Kolarov, take a bow. A combination of poor finishing and sublime goalkeeping had kept the scores level until Serbia’s no.11 produced his moment of magic. Kolarov’s powerful left foot is no secret, but few inside the stadium would have expected such a thunderous strike when the Roma defender stood over a free kick midway through the second half. His shot was unstoppable; a side-footed missile which screamed into the top corner of the Costa Rica net. Kaylor Navas, who kept his team in the game with several crucial saves either side of half time, was nowhere near it.

Bayern Munich players look to turn words into actions in Bremen Bundesliga:

Niko Kovac has received public support from his Bayern Munich players – but talk is cheap. The Bavarians need to step up when they travel to Bremen. Elsewhere, Dortmund welcome Freiburg while Gladbach travel to Leipzig. A series of internal meetings, a couple of tactical adjustments, qualification for the knockout stage of the Champions League and some public statements of support for Niko Kovac from key players – Bayern Munich are back on track. That, at least, is the impression the Bavarian giants want to convey as they go into their final five Bundesliga games of the year, starting with a

trip to Werder Bremen on Saturday five games that striker Robert Lewandowski believes the team must win in order to stay in touch in 2019. "I hope it will have a liberating effect," said Kovac, referring to Tuesdayʼs 5-1 hammering of Benfica. "I hope the players see that the instructions we give them make sense. Now my team needs to dig as deep as they can."

Alexis Sanchez: Jose Mourinho fears Man Utd forward will be out for long time Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez could be out for a "long time" with a hamstring injury, says manager Jose Mourinho. The 29-year-old Chilean suffered the injury in training on Thursday. Sanchez is yet to have a scan to determine the extent of the damage but Mourinho said he was "screaming" in pain and would miss up to six weeks. "It is not a little muscular injury from which he will be ready in a week or 10 days," he added. Mourinho says it is more severe than the hamstring injury

defender Victor Lindelof has suffered. The Sweden international, who was injured in Saturdayʼs home draw against Crystal Palace, is expected to be out until the festive period. On Sanchez, Mourinho added: "It is an aggressive muscular injury. He has not had a scan yet but the player is experienced. He knows what the injury is. "From my experience, the painful scream and the way it happened, it will be a long time. "For me and Alexis Sanchez, the grade is different to the one that Lindelof has and that was not easy."
