EDITOR’S LETTER
One of the things I love most about being part of Absolute Woman is the chance to meet incredible women from all walks of life. Time and again, I’m reminded how important it is to have a network of women of every age who inspire, support and cheer each other on.
Our trip to De Hoop brought this to life in the most special way. We arrived as a group of women, some friends and some strangers, but we left as sisters. Between the hikes, the potjie dinners and the endless pink skies, we shared stories, laughter, and quiet moments that reminded me how deeply we need each other.
Sisterhood is about lifting one another, celebrating the wins and being there in the challenges too. I hope that this issue encourages you to hold your circle close and never forget that we’re all in this together.
This issue, we bring you stories that inspire, uplift and celebrate the beauty of everyday living. In fashion and beauty, we show you how to layer luxe looks for
spring, discover your perfume personality and get expert tips from Candice-Lee Kannemeyer on undoing sun damage. Our cover star, actress Briana Evigan, shares the real-life plot twist that led her from Hollywood red carpets to rural Zimbabwe.
In wellness, we explore starting over after divorce, why quality sleep is your biggest win, and the hidden power of your lymph nodes. Plus, we take you into the mindful world of matcha with Mikayla McClean.
Foodies will love our coastal-inspired dishes, wellness recipes from The Beauty Chef, and a shopping list of culinary delights. From second-hand treasures for your home to caring for ageing pets, and escapes from De Hoop to Sun City, this issue is filled with inspiration worth savouring.
With strength and love,

SPENDING THE SUMMER BASKING IN THE SUNSHINE IS WONDERFUL FOR THE SOUL, BUT FAR LESS BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR SKIN - ESPECIALLY IF PROPER PROTECTION WAS NEGLECTED. THE AFTERMATH? VISIBLE SUN DAMAGE ON THE FACE, NECK, DECOLLETAGE AND ANY OTHER EXPOSED AREAS.
BY CANDICE-LEE KANNEMEYER
S DAMAGE Undoing the
un damage, or photoageing, can manifest as wrinkles, age spots, dry or rough skin texture, redness, and in some severe cases, skin cancer. Once UV radiation alters the DNA of your skin cells, the damage is irreversible. However, with the right approach, it can be treated, minimised and repaired.
Fortunately, various treatments exist to even out skin tone, fade discolouration, stimulate collagen production and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. To help navigate the best options, we consulted Cape Town-based aesthetic practitioner Dr. Alek Nicolik for his expert recommendations.
Professional Treatments for Sun Damage
“Before creating a treatment plan, I always recommend a Visia Skin Analysis”, says Dr Nicolik. “This high-tech imaging procedure uses specialised lighting and cameras to capture detailed images of both the skin’s surface and deeper layers. It provides a thorough assessment of pigmentation, texture, pores and wrinkles.” With these insights, an aesthetic practitioner can tailor a treatment program to target individual concerns and maximise skin potential.
For mild to moderate damage, superficial

SKINCARE
medical-grade chemical peels work exceptionally well. “Alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid penetrate the outer layer of the skin, encouraging collagen production deep within,” explains Dr. Nicolik. “Meanwhile, citric acid reduces pigmentation caused by UV exposure.” These peels effectively exfoliate, brighten and hydrate the skin, revealing a fresher, more youthful appearance.
Another highly powerful option is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy or non-ablative laser treatments. “IPL specifically targets pigmentation and broken capillaries caused by sun exposure while simultaneously stimulating collagen and elastin production,” Dr. Nicolik notes. Over time, these treatments help to restore an even skin tone and a smoother texture.
For individuals looking to improve texture, tone and elasticity, microneedling with a Dermapen is an excellent choice. “By creating controlled micro-injuries, this treatment activates the body’s natural healing process, promoting collagen and elastin production,” he explains.
To further enhance results for pigmentation concerns, Dr. Nicolik suggests combining treatments. “A mild chemical peel, retinol, or exosomes – powerful regenerative nanoparticles that accelerate tissue repair and enhance wound healing – can significantly boost treatment outcomes and optimise skin rejuvenation.
Powerful Ingredients for Skin Repair

Shannon Dougall, founder of skincare brand Skin Functional, emphasises the importance of targeted skincare products and daily sun protection to both treat and prevent further damage.
At the top of her list? Retinoids. “Vitamin A derivatives, such as retinoids, are excellent for refining skin texture, reducing hyperpigmentation and boosting collagen production”, she says.
TRY: Skin Functional 0.2% Retinaldehyde, R203 (30ml)
A high-strength yet gentle retinoid is effective for ageing, acne and dark spots. This formula helps prevent collagen breakdown and significantly improves photoaged skin. It unclogs pores, promotes cell turnover, and encourages the growth of new, healthy cells, resulting in a more even complexion.
Vitamin C is another powerhouse ingredient. “As a potent antioxidant, vitamin C brightens the skin, reduces dark spots, and helps prevent further sun damage”, Dougall adds.
TRY: Skin Functional 12% Ascorbic Acid + Briteodant Complex, R189 (30ml)
This serum contains a high concentration of ascorbic acid, the most effective form of vitamin C, to brighten, protect and repair the skin.
Dougall also highlights niacinamide and hyaluronic acid as essential components of a post-sun skincare routine. “Niacinamide, or vitamin B3, strengthens the skin barrier, enhances elasticity, and reduces fine lines. Meanwhile, hyaluronic acid deeply hydrates and plumps the skin, helping to minimise the appearance of UV-induced wrinkles.”

SKINCARE

SUNSCREEN: The Non-Negotiable
Rain or shine, sunscreen is a must to protect the skin from further UV exposure. Daily application of broad-spectrum SPF is the single most effective way to prevent premature ageing and sun damage.
A Holistic Approach to Skin Repair
Although sun damage can be frustrating, the right combination of treatments and at-home skincare can dramatically improve skin texture, tone and overall health. Advanced in-clinic procedures like microneedling, laser therapy and chemical peels offer solutions to reversing visible damage, while targeted ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C and niacinamide, support long-term skin repair and protection. ●
* The Visia Skin Analysis is available at various aesthetic and laser clinics countrywide*
Our top pick?
Avène Ultra Fluid Perfector SPF 50+ R390 (50ml).
This lightweight, fragrance-free sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA, UVB and blue light. It’s enriched with antioxidant vitamin E and features a universal tint that adapts to different skin tones, making it suitable for all skin types – including sensitive skin.
For those who need a reminder, sunscreen isn’t just for when you’re outdoors, it needs to be part of your daily skincare routine. It should be applied throughout the day to keep the skin safeguarded from harmful rays.

A teeth STAINS BREAKING DOWN
bright, white smile is essential for making a good first impression and enhancing self-confidence. However, stained teeth are a widespread concern, often caused by lifestyle choices and ageing. According to Dr Faheema Ismail, a dental expert who addresses stained teeth daily, this issue is more prevalent than many realise. Understanding the causes and treatment options can help you maintain a healthy, glowing smile.
Types of Teeth Stains
These stains occur within the tooth structure, affecting the dentin beneath the enamel. Causes include ageing, tooth trauma, excessive fluoride, certain medications, or health conditions during tooth development. Intrinsic stains often require professional treatments to remove. A RADIANT SMILE BOOSTS CONFIDENCE, BUT TEETH STAINS ARE A COMMON ISSUE. FROM COFFEE CONSUMPTION TO THE NATURAL AGEING PROCESS, UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES OF STAINS CAN HELP WITH PREVENTION AND TREATMENT. HERE’S HOW TO REMOVE STAINS AND KEEP YOUR TEETH LOOKING THEIR BEST.
Tooth stains can be classified into two main categories:
Extrinsic Stains
These stains appear on the surface of the teeth due to foods and drinks (such as coffee and tea), smoking and poor oral hygiene. They are typically easier to remove with regular brushing and professional cleanings.
Intrinsic Stains

DENTISTRY
Common Causes of Teeth Stains
Dr Ismail highlights several common culprits: “Tea, coffee, tobacco, smoking, and poor oral hygiene contribute significantly to staining.” Pigmented foods, such as berries, tomato sauce and soy sauce, can also lead to discolouration.
Dr Muhammad Hassim from Apex Dental Studio notes that yellow staining between teeth is often caused by hardened plaque (dental calculus). Professional cleanings can effectively remove plaque and surface stains, maintain both oral health and aesthetics.
How to Remove Teeth Stains
Brushing your teeth regularly is crucial. If you currently brush once daily, consider increasing it to twice or even three times a day. Dr Hassim suggests brushing after consuming stain-causing foods.
Whitening Toothpastes & Professional Treatments

Coconut Oil Pulling for a Healthier Mouth
Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing coconut oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes to remove toxins and improve oral health. This practice can reduce harmful bacteria, freshen your breath, and support gum health. Studies suggest that oil pulling may also prevent plaque buildup, which can lead to yellowing teeth. To practice oil pulling, simply swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 10-20 minutes, then spit it into a tissue and dispose of it in the trash (to avoid clogging pipes). Rinse your mouth with warm water and brush as usual.
Dr Hassim advises caution with whitening toothpaste: “These products contain stronger abrasives and can wear down enamel if overused. Consult your dentist before trying them.” While several over-the-counter whitening products are available, Dr Ismail recommends professional treatments like teeth whitening, scaling and polishing for effective results. DIY remedies, such as brushing with bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice, may seem harmless but can erode enamel over time, leading to increased tooth sensitivity.
Diet & Natural Solutions
A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables supports dental health. Crunchy fruits and vegetables can help remove plaque naturally. For example, pineapples contain bromelain, and strawberries have malic acid, both of which are known to help brighten teeth.
Preventing Teeth Stains
Maintaining good oral hygiene and making mindful lifestyle
choices can help prevent stains. According to Healthline.com, you can minimise discolouration with these tips:
• Clean your teeth after eating pigmented foods. If brushing isn’t feasible, rinse your mouth with water.
• Practice good oral hygiene: Brush at least twice daily, floss regularly and consider using a water flosser.
• Limit habits that cause stains: Reduce smoking, tobacco use and excessive coffee or tea consumption.
• Use a straw when drinking staining beverages to minimise contact with your teeth.
A consistent oral care routine, regular dental visits and smart lifestyle choices can help you maintain a bright, stain-free smile. ●

connection THE GUT-SKIN
Glowing skin starts in the gut! A healthy microbiome reduces inflammation, boosts immunity and enhances nutrient absorption for a radiant complexion.

Did you know the secret to achieving beautiful, radiant skin lies within your gut? Emerging research highlights an essential player in the appearance of your skin: your gut health. It turns out that the health of your gut microbiome - the community of bacteria in your digestive system - can significantly impact your skin health.
The skin is the body’s biggest organ and, as such, is an indicator of overall health and well-being in individuals. Good bacteria in the gut can help eliminate the toxins and free radicals that can damage skin and cause early signs of ageing.
When there’s a disturbance in the gut health or digestive balance, your skin might not be happy either. It can show its displeasure with things like pimples, turning red and becoming more sensitive.
How gut health impacts skin conditions:
Inflammation
An imbalance in gut bacteria can contribute to systemic inflammation, which may exacerbate skin conditions. An unhealthy gut can leak inflammatory substances into the bloodstream, triggering flare-ups and worsening skin health.
Immune system
The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in regulating the immune system. A disrupted microbiome can impair immune function, leading to increased inflammation and autoimmune responses.
Nutrient absorption
A healthy gut is essential for proper nutrient absorption. Deficiencies in specific nutrients, such as vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids, have been linked to certain skin conditions. Maintaining a balanced gut microbiome can enhance nutrient absorption and support better skin health.

A natural approach to good gut health
Probiotics can play a vital role in supporting a healthy gut microbiome.
Here’s how probiotics can benefit your gut and skin: Reduce inflammation
Probiotics help balance gut bacteria, which can reduce inflammation. By promoting a healthier gut environment, probiotics may help lessen the severity of skin flare-ups.
Enhance immune function
Probiotics can help modulate immune responses by supporting a balanced gut microbiome, potentially reducing the autoimmune activity associated with skin conditions.
Improve nutrient absorption
Probiotics support better nutrient absorption, ensuring your body gets the vitamins and minerals needed for optimal skin health.
Choose the right probiotic
Incorporate a high-quality probiotic like Rawbiotics into your daily routine. Rawbiotics contain beneficial strains that support a balanced gut microbiome and help manage inflammation.
“Daily delight. I continue to be impressed with this product; it’s a great staple, and I recommend taking it as a daily supplement. My eczemaprone skin definitely benefits, and my stomach, which is always the first affected by anything from stress to a bug, feels on top form.”
Incorporating probiotics into your routine may reduce inflammation and improve skin appearance overall. By choosing Rawbiotics, you’re taking a proactive step toward nurturing your skin from the inside out. Unlock radiant skin with Rawbiotics.

FROM TO BUSINESS
Carina Pereira ’s journey is rooted in passion, purpose and empowerment, from backstage glam to business growth. As a seasoned artist, educator and founder of Carina Pereira International, she’s redefining beauty education by creating inclusive spaces where women are encouraged to thrive.
Your journey began with a dream role at MAC Cosmetics. What were some of the biggest lessons you learned there that helped shape your path as an entrepreneur and educator?
Working at MAC Cosmetics laid the foundation for everything I do today. Hosting MAC Technique classes taught me to break down complex skills and connect with diverse audiences. The brand’s culture of celebrating individuality helped me embrace authenticity in artistry and business. I learned to listen, adapt and confidently lead. At the same time, the fast-paced environment taught me to be resourceful and solution-driven. All of that shaped the educator and entrepreneur I’ve become.
Many people dream of working in beauty, but few take the leap to open their own school. What inspired you to create Carina Pereira International?
After years in the industry, I saw a gap, so much talent but not enough nurturing, ego-free learning spaces. I wanted to create something different. Carina Pereira International was born from a passion for both beauty and empowerment. My goal was to build a space where artists feel seen and supported, where community matters more than competition. Hosting MAC classes showed me how education
can spark confidence and I wanted to pass that feeling on. This academy is more than a school; it’s a safe, inspiring place where we can grow and rise together.
Your academy offers flexible learning and international certification. How important is accessibility in your mission? It’s absolutely essential. Many of our students are juggling family, work, or financial constraints, so flexibility is key. We designed our programs to meet women where they are, and with internationally recognised certification, our graduates aren’t limited. They can freelance locally or work abroad, from destination weddings to superyachts. Empowering women through education means giving them real options and the confidence to shape their futures.
You’ve worked with celebrities, on fashion weeks and major shoots. How do you bring that experience into your courses? I bring my students with me! Whether it’s a fashion show or a campaign shoot, I believe the best way to learn is by doing. Our courses are designed to reflect real-world standards and I regularly share behind-the-scenes insights to prepare students for what to expect. Working in fast-paced, highpressure environments has taught me a lot and I want my students to graduate with more than just skills. I want them to leave with real experience and industry readiness.
When did your passion for makeup and hair first begin? It started young. My mom always gave me the most fabulous hairstyles, which gave me early confidence and sparked my interest in beauty. I also grew close to our family hairdresser, who encouraged me to study hair. However, I quickly realised cutting and colouring wasn’t quite my passion. My mom suggested I explore makeup and we’d often visit MAC before special events. That’s where the spark turned into something bigger. Two weeks after completing my makeup training, I landed my dream job at MAC, full circle!
Your courses welcome everyone from beginners to aspiring professionals. What advice do you have for women who are hesitant to start?
Just go for it. My dad always told me, “Go for things. If you bump your head, you can get back up.” That mindset has stayed with me. With the proper training and support, there’s so much potential, whether it’s a side hustle or a full-time career. This industry rewards passion and consistency. Don’t wait for the ‘perfect moment.’ Start, keep learning and permit yourself to grow.
Your hairstyling course feels exceptionally approachable. Why was that important to you? Because hairstyling can feel intimidating if you’ve never been trained, I wanted to create a course that feels achievable from day one, where techniques are broken down simply and confidence is built step by step. Everyone can learn and grow. When students feel empowered, they don’t just improve their skills but start believing in themselves.

With trends constantly changing, how do you keep your curriculum current and industry-relevant?
I stay plugged into the industry, whether working with brands like G-Star RAW, attending shows, collaborating with Swiitchbeauty, or travelling to explore global trends. These experiences helped me keep our content fresh and aligned with current events. But beyond trends, I also focus on timeless techniques and professional standards that will always be relevant.
What does success look like for you personally and in the lives of your graduates?
Success, for me, is seeing my students thrive. It’s not just about handing out certificates; it’s about creating a bond, helping them build confidence, and watching them step into their power. Many of my graduates join my makeup agency, where I help them find work and grow their careers. True success is seeing them believe in themselves, whether they go solo, work backstage, or build a beautiful side hustle.
For women wanting to level up their everyday beauty routines, what’s your go-to tip for flawless results? For makeup, skincare is everything. Keep your skin hydrated and prepped, and your makeup will last so much longer. And for hair? Dry shampoo is a secret weapon. It adds texture, boosts volume and helps styles hold without heaviness. Simple but game-changing! ●

By Wanita Nicol
When she was 25, Step Up 2 star Briana Evigan followed her dreams to Bali. What should have been a simple backpacking adventure changed her life forever.

Styling and Wardrobe Candice-Lee Kannemeyer
riana Evigan looks radiant. It’s not make-up – she’s not wearing any. The 38-yearold has the radiance of a successful woman who’s living with purpose. She’s joined the Teams call with her hair pulled back in a practical, messy bun and is wearing a comfy-looking top that might be pyjamas. “It’s been a busy morning here in Los Angeles, but I’m good,” she says cheerfully. While she grew up in LA, Briana has called Zimbabwe home since moving there to be closer to her non-profit organisation, Abundant Village. Through the organisation, she and her team work with leaders in underserved areas, developing programmes that uplift the entire community and give people the luxury to dream. It’s a long way from the Hollywood career she started in.
Life among the stars
“I did grow up in the business,” says Briana. “My dad is an actor and musician; my sister is an actress; my brother is a music producer and songwriter; and my mom was a ballerina and a model. I went to a high school with Denzel Washington’s son and Andy Garcia’s daughter, and I went to school with the Olsen twins. And that’s just how we grew up. It was normal.”
Briana was on track to follow suit. She had a band, Moorish Idol (she played keyboard and sang), had studied dance since she was a child, and, at 16, had starred in the music video for Linkin Park’s hit Numb – the first 2000's music video predating YouTube to reach a billion views after being added to the platform. At 21, she landed her breakout movie role as the female lead in Step Up 2: The Streets. But success at work didn’t come with the fulfilment Briana had expected. It didn’t help that she had become typecast as a scream queen after doing one horror film – a genre she

wasn’t particularly fond of. “I started getting into bed every night and didn’t feel ‘full’,” she recalls. “There was this big emptiness. And I couldn’t put my finger on it because I was making more money than I ever had in my life, and things were lining up, films were still coming, and everything was going quite well on the outside, but inside, the emptiness was real. I had three dreams about Bali and took off on a one-way ticket, backpacking.” What began as a 25-year-old’s youthful adventure would change the course of Briana’s life.
Chasing dreams
Briana still vividly recalls the moment everything changed. “I was riding an elephant in Bali just like all tourists want to when they show up, and the elephant was trying to move in a certain direction and was getting quite feisty. The guy riding on its neck in front of me had one of those bull hooks and was jabbing the hook into the elephant’s neck because it wasn’t listening. I just felt, ‘this animal is so unhappy and has been broken and beaten for us to come ride it,’ and I wanted to get off of it.”
That eye-opening experience led Briana to learn about the abuse of elephants for tourism and the poaching crisis. It ultimately brought her to the African continent, where she learnt another life-altering lesson: “If we don’t heal humans, we’ll never be able to heal animals, let alone the planet.”

In the decade since, she has co-founded Abundant Village and a production company, MoveMe Studio, created to tell stories that inspire action. Briana won Best Woman Filmmaker at the 2023 Las Vegas Movie Awards for the pilot documentary episode MoveMe South Africa. Fifty percent of the net profits from MoveMe Studio go towards supporting Abundant Village.
More recently, she married an Australian anti-poaching activist—the founder of Akashinga, the all-women antipoaching unit in Zimbabwe—and had a son, who turns three this year.
What inspired your vision for Abundant Village’s operations? It began with a blueprint. The co-founder was working on a different project aimed at helping women escape domestic violence in the U.S. When we teamed up, it was a no-brainer

SUN-KISSED PROTECTION

We’re always on the lookout for skincare that simplifies without compromising, and The Laser Beautique’s Tinted SPF 50 is just that. Enriched with powerhouse ingredients like squalane, Vitamin E and Coenzyme Q10, it helps to hydrate, soothe and protect while giving you that radiant, soft-focus glow we all crave. Available in three blendable shades, it glides on smoothly and wears beautifully alone or under makeup. Ideal for busy mornings or makeup-free days, this product is also waterresistant and breathable, making it a must-have for your beauty bag. A true 4-in-1 skin saviour, TLB’s Tinted SPF 50 is the perfect way to elevate your skincare routine.

to focus on Africa, where I had already been working. The blueprint includes a medical clinic, a media hub, gardens, and a business centre. It would be a community-driven space where people could finally dream. I always say, “If you’re suffering, you can’t dream, and if you can’t dream, then how are you living?”
Practically, how does that work?
When working within communities, we ask questions, talk, and sit under trees for hours. You’ve got travel authorities, Ndunas, and chiefs, and you find out what is wanted or needed in this blueprint. It always starts with water and regenerative food gardens because if you can’t have food when you’re hungry, you can’t think.
We want to activate something and get it locally led and running by itself.
How have things changed since your son came into your life?
That part has been my favourite! When I moved to Africa, I didn’t expect to be engaged in two months, pregnant in three months, and have two-step kids all in one year! But they’re the gift that keeps giving. The future makes sense all of a sudden, you know? Everything I do now matters more and becomes more precious because it exists.

Just be a good person. Treat people well and do the right thing first. Take care of yourself so you can care for others and follow your dreams, because the rest will come. And never get rid of hope, ever. Once you lose hope, it’s a dark place to live.
What do you have in the works?
I’ve partnered with the Dollar Donation Club. It’s a terrific way to create impact with a small amount of money, meaning $1 a month or more. I’ve also teamed up with PlanetPlay, the gaming community. It connects gaming with green. I’m excited about continuing to spread our wings through Africa and start going into other countries. And then I want to have one more kid—you know, to add one more wild thing into the mix!
You said an emptiness drove you to Bali… how are you feeling nowadays?
Oh, I am so full! Somebody asked me in Los Angeles the other day, “How are you?” I was like, honestly, I’m so good. My relationship is fantastic. We’ve got these beautiful children. We get to travel around the world and do the work we love every day.
It is challenging and exhausting; you don’t know what’s coming next. But at the end of the day, when I see the faces of the kids we work with, the women, the school, the teachers, and the moms, knowing that their lives are being changed for the better is just that constant reminder. And seeing my son’s face shows me we’re doing good. I chose the right path here. ●

STARTING OVER:
Rebuilding your life after DIVORCE
CHOOSING TO LEAVE A MARRIAGE MIGHT SEEM DAUNTING AND DEPRESSING, BUT IT CAN BE THE MOST EMPOWERING DECISION OF ALL. HERE’S WHY IT COULD SIGNAL THE START OF A HAPPY NEW LIFE.

BY HELEN WALLACE
When people get married, they do not consider the possibility of divorce. The numbers reveal, however, that this is an increasingly common situation. According to Stats SA, about four out of 10 marriages in South Africa will end within the first 10 years. Globally, this rate has been on the rise since the 1970s.
For many, the breakdown of a marriage can seem like a failure and can come with a lot of grief. But it’s not all
“A divorce does not mean your life is over. It also does not mean that you have failed. It’s important to take what you can out of this experience, learn what you need to learn and choose to do things differently next time”.
TRUST THE PROCESS
Choosing to get a divorce can be scary, but this decision can also be an empowering one. If you are in a marriage that is abusive, controlling or loveless, it can allow you to find safety and reclaim control over your life. This can lead to self-discovery, personal growth, fulfilment and pursuit of a path that aligns with your desires, needs and values.
Something you should be prepared for is that it will require navigating a challenging change process. Diaan explains that healing takes time. “The ending of a relationship is a loss, so you can expect to go through a grieving process and deal with the five stages, namely denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally, acceptance. You must take the time to mourn your old life before starting over”. There is no concrete timeline as everyone experiences it differently. Mimi warns against trying to move on too quickly. “You cannot rush yourself through this process – take your time and allow yourself to feel whatever you feel”.
doom and gloom. “Life is always full of change,” says Clinical Psychologist Diaan Bisogno. “We need to accept that things change and we change and that there is always hope to have a new and even better life if we are willing to work on ourselves”. This is something that Relationship and Family Counsellor Mimi Hewett agrees with. “A divorce does not mean your life is over,” she explains. “It also does not mean that you have failed. It’s important to take what you can out of this experience, learn what you need to learn and choose to do things differently next time”.
During and after a marriage breakdown, there are different ways to make sense of it, heal from it and find yourself again. “I recommend that everyone going through a divorce should see a psychologist or counsellor to help them look at what went wrong, find ways to cope with the pain and discover tools and strategies to overcome and move on from the loss,” advises Diaan. Mimi adds that forgiveness is an essential part of healing after a divorce. “You need to forgive yourself and the other person so that you can put the baggage down and move forward lighter”.

HELP YOURSELF TO HEAL
Healing takes time, but there are things you can do to help uplift you during this process and put you in good stead for a new, happier life.“Practice self-compassion, self-love and various forms of self-care to tend to your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being,” suggests Diaan. “Focus on getting enough sleep, eating a healthy and nutritious diet, taking walks in the fresh air and seeking emotional support from friends, family or a counsellor. Learning calming strategies, such as breathwork, yoga and meditation, can also go a long way in reducing stress and feeling centred”.
Mimi also has some suggestions. “Starting a new hobby, or rediscovering an old one, can connect you with others and yourself,” she explains. “Joining a support group in your area can also provide you with a safe space to share what you are going through with people who understand”. She wants everyone going through a divorce to remember to treat themselves kindly. “Life is all about second chances and there can be a lot of joy waiting for you on the other side of this painful process. What you learn can pave the way for personal development and a new, more positive, sense of self”. ●

WHILE
YOU WERE sleeping
GLOWING SKIN, BALANCED HORMONES, A CALMER MIND AND A HEALTHIER WEIGHT, THEY ALL BEGIN WITH A GOOD NIGHT’S REST. WE LOOK AT HOW SLEEP WORKS BEHIND THE SCENES TO SUPPORT YOUR BODY AND WHY PRIORITISING IT COULD BE YOUR BIGGEST WELLNESS WIN YET.
BY ANJE HILL

you may be curled up under the duvet, but while you’re sleeping, your body is busy. Every night, an entire system of healing, repair and regulation kicks into gear, quietly fine-tuning your hormones, renewing your skin, managing appetite, and supporting your emotional balance. For women in particular, the impact of poor sleep can be especially far-reaching, affecting everything from skin clarity and metabolism to PMS symptoms and mood swings.
Here’s what’s really going on while you rest and why better sleep may be one of the most powerful tools in your health toolkit.
YOUR SKIN’S NIGHT SHIFT
It’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason. While you’re sleeping, blood flow to the skin increases and your body ramps up production of human growth hormone (HGH), a key player in collagen synthesis and cell repair.
Collagen is what keeps your skin firm, plump and youthful, but as we age, production naturally declines. Chronic sleep deprivation only speeds this up, leading to dullness, sagging, fine lines, and slower healing. At the same time, cortisol (your stress hormone) rises when you’re sleep-deprived, breaking down collagen and increasing inflammation. The result? Breakouts, flare-ups and premature ageing.
During deep sleep, your skin’s protective barrier also strengthens, helping it locks in moisture and shield against environmental stressors. No amount of expensive night cream can make up for poor sleep, but paired with rest, your skincare routine works far more effectively.

“Sleep isn't a luxury, it's a non-negotiable pillar of women's health. ”
HORMONES IN HARMONY
Hormonal balance depends on rhythm and consistency, both of which are regulated by quality sleep. While you sleep, the body releases a complex cocktail of hormones:
• Melatonin, which not only helps you fall asleep but also acts as an antioxidant for the skin
• HGH, for tissue regeneration
• And a delicate balance of oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid, and cortisol – all of which support mood, fertility, metabolism, and cycle regularity.
When sleep is cut short or fragmented, cortisol stays elevated, disrupting everything from your period to your ability to concentrate. Many women report worsened PMS symptoms, heightened anxiety, and irregular cycles when sleep is lacking.

Poor sleep is also a major contributor to midlife hormonal symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats and irritability. If you’re in perimenopause and struggling with broken rest, your hormones could be stuck in a loop of sleep disruption and imbalance.
WEIGHT, CRAVINGS AND METABOLISM
It’s not just what you eat, it’s how well you sleep that influences your weight.
Lack of sleep throws off the hormones that regulate hunger (ghrelin) and fullness (leptin). Ghrelin rises, leptin drops, and suddenly your body is crying out for sugar and comfort food even if you’ve eaten enough.
At the same time, your body’s insulin sensitivity decreases, meaning it becomes less efficient at processing blood sugar,

So, How Much Is Enough?
Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night, and for women, quality matters as much as quantity. Deep, restorative sleep – particularly in the non-REM stages – is when most of the hormone balancing, cell repair and metabolic fine-tuning occurs. If sleep feels elusive, a few supportive shifts can make all the difference:
• Stick to a consistent bedtime, even on weekends
• Avoid caffeine after midday and limit alcohol before bed
• Wind down with light stretching, reading or meditation
• Keep your bedroom cool, dark and screen-free
• Try gentle sleep-supporting aids like magnesium glycinate, ashwagandha, or chamomile tea (always check with a health professional if taking supplements)
which can lead to fat storage, especially around the belly. Over time, disrupted sleep has been linked to weight gain, especially in women going through hormonal transitions. Add to that the fact that poor sleep lowers your motivation to exercise and slows muscle recovery, and it becomes clear, good sleep is crucial if you want to maintain a healthy weight and steady energy levels.
MOOD, RESILIENCE AND MENTAL CLARITY
If you’ve ever woken up from a restless night feeling foggy, snappy, or on the verge of tears, you’re not imagining it. Poor sleep disrupts emotional regulation, making the brain’s stress-response centre (the amygdala) more reactive and less able to manage daily stress.
In women, this often shows up as anxiety, low mood, or difficulty coping, especially during hormone-sensitive life

stages like postpartum, perimenopause or periods of burnout. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can increase the risk of depression and lower overall mental resilience. Meanwhile, during deep sleep, your brain clears out toxic by-products through the glymphatic system, essentially resetting your cognitive clarity. Without this clean-up, your focus, memory and decision-making take a hit.
Sleep is not a luxury, it's a non-negotiable pillar of women's health. While you’re sleeping, your body is doing some of its most essential work: rebuilding collagen, recalibrating hormones, regulating hunger, and refreshing your mind.
The next time you’re tempted to stay up late to finish one more task or scroll just a little longer, consider this: the real work, the deep, healing, balancing kind – starts when you switch off. ●

NOT HARDER SLEEP SMARTER,

Quality sleep has become a crucial wellness goal in a world dominated by stress, screens, and busy schedules. Unfortunately, many South Africans fall short, averaging just over 6 hours of sleep per night, well below the recommended 8 to 9 hours. Poor sleep can lead to health risks like heart disease, cognitive decline, and emotional imbalances. That’s where Sloom comes in.
Founded in 2016 by industrial psychologist and foam manufacturer Rudo Kemp, Sloom was born out of frustration with confusing mattress jargon and limited options. Kemp combined science with simplicity to create an innovative, fully customisable mattress solution–delivered straight to your door in a box.
Why Sloom Works
Sloom’s standout feature is its customisable memory foam mattress, which allows each bed side to be tailored for individual comfort. This is especially ideal for couples with different needs.
• Split Comfort Design: Personalise firmness levels on each side.
• Next-Gen Foam: Offers enhanced airflow, superior support, and lasting durability.
• Adjustable Pillows: Customisable height using removable memory foam filler.
• Natural Cotton Bedding: Breathable, BCI-certified and eco-conscious.
• Cape Town King: South Africa’s largest bed for next-level sleep luxury.
• 100-Night Trial: Experience the mattress at home without any awkward showroom testing.
Beyond Comfort
Sloom also champions better sleep hygiene with practical tips from Kemp himself:
• Keep a consistent sleep schedule–even on weekends.
• Unwind before bed by reading, meditating, or doing light stretching.
• Create a calm, dark, and quiet sleep environment.
• Avoid screens and heavy meals before bedtime.
• Choose mattresses and pillows that support your body and sleep goals.
“Restful sleep isn’t a luxury–it’s foundational to good health,” says Kemp. “Investing in the right tools, like a supportive mattress and stress-reducing routines, can improve everything from mood to cognitive function.” With the rise of “sleep tourism,” many guesthouses are investing in quality sleep experiences. Sloom is helping South Africans bring hotel-level rest into their own homes. “We often spend more on devices that disrupt our sleep than on the beds we sleep in,” says Kemp. “But real self-care starts with investing in your rest.”

Nodes YOUR BODY'S UNSUNG HEROES
AS PART OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM, YOUR LYMPH NODES PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN OPTIMAL BODILY FUNCTIONING. HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THESE SMALL ORGANS AND HOW TO KEEP THEM HEALTHY.
BY HELEN WALLACE
Our bodies contain an intricate weave of organs and networks, all working to keep us alive and healthy. The lymphatic system is one of these that’s important to overall well-being (and is often overlooked). It has several functions: helping return excess fluids to the bloodstream, helping the body absorb fat, and protecting us from nasty invaders. As one writer aptly describes it, the lymphatic system is the vehicle through which the immune system acts. In other words, it’s necessary to keep our bodies in good condition.
Dr Ria Bester is a Nuclear Medicine Specialist with vast knowledge of this complicated system and mass highway throughout the body. “It consists of a group of organs, vessels and tissues, including the spleen, which removes damaged cells and filters blood, the thymus, which helps the body to fight against bad cells and the
mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), which is a collection of white blood cells in the moist lining of body parts such as the mouth, gut, and airways”, she explains. “This also includes the lymph nodes – of which there are about 600 located throughout the body and are connected via lymphatic vessels – which are small, bean-like structures that work as filters for foreign substances like infections, parasites, toxins, or cancer cells”. You may have felt yours before as they can be found in the neck, armpits, chest, abdomen and groin.
Giving the signal
When there is a problem with your lymph nodes, they will become swollen. “You can often feel them in the neck, armpits and groin when they become enlarged,” says Dr Ria. “This shouldn’t be ignored as it is a sign that your body’s immune
“You can often feel them in the neck, armpits and groin when they become enlarged. This shouldn’t be ignored as it is a sign that your body’s immune system has been signalled to destroy a pathogen or other cells”.

system has been signalled to destroy a pathogen or other cells”.
Just because your lymph nodes are swollen doesn’t mean they have to be removed. Your body might just be fighting off an infection, such as strep throat, colds, flu, and skin wounds, bacterial infections, like ear infections and tonsillitis and autoimmune diseases, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, however, there could be cancer present. “To make a proper diagnosis, one or more of these glands can be removed. This can also reduce the chance of cancer spreading.”
If you have undergone a lymph node removal, or there is damage to the lymphatic system, you can develop lymphoedema. This is a chronic
condition where lymph fluid builds up in soft tissues in the body and causes swelling. Carolyn Hoffman is a Therapeutic Massage Therapist specialising in lymphoedema management. “This condition has no cure, but it can be managed,” she says. “There is no medication for it but patients can be prescribed something to relieve the symptoms.” Manual lymph drainage is a gentle technique she uses on people struggling with this condition that can also provide relief, as can exercise, physiotherapy and wearing compression garments.
Dr Ria also claims that having a wholesome, nutritious diet can reduce the symptoms associated with

lymphoedema. “Patients should limit processed foods and salt intake, and try to maintain a healthy weight,” she advises. “They should be eating enough high-quality protein, such as chicken, fish, eggs and tofu, fresh fruit and vegetables and whole grains. As for vitamins and minerals, omegas 3 and 6 are important, as well as vitamins A, C, E and zinc, as they can promote cell development.”
Living without lymph nodes
Surgeons will always try to prevent the unnecessary removal of these important glands as it can lead to long-lasting symptoms, such as stiffness, weakness and numbness. But when this is unavoidable, it is still possible to lead a relatively normal life.
Carolyn explains that they need to be more vigilant. “After a removal, it is crucial to take good care of the skin on the side of the body from which the node or nodes were removed. For example, if you have one removed from your right breast, then special care must be taken of the right arm and hand for the rest of your life,” she says. “The priority should be to make sure you do not get any infections by keeping the skin clean and also to moisturise regularly to try to prevent cracks in the skin.”
Playing your part
When it comes to maintaining a strong and well-functioning lymphatic system, it starts with you. “You should avoid

contact with, or limit exposure to, toxic chemicals, such as pesticides and harsh cleaning products. Lead to a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, a balanced diet and getting enough sleep and drink plenty of water to keep your
body hydrated,” explains Dr Ria. This is something that Carolyn echoes. “To promote health in your lymph nodes, you need to promote your health in the whole body,” she says. Take care of them so they can take care of you. ●

WHY THIS GREEN POWDER DESERVES A PLACE IN YOUR WELLNESS ROUTINE
BY ANJE HILL

In the health and wellness world, trends come and go—but some stand the test of time. Matcha, the finely ground green tea powder that has long been part of Japanese culture, has become a staple in many wellness circles around the globe and for good reason. Packed with antioxidants and natural energy-boosting properties, matcha offers a wide range of health benefits that can support your body and mind. Here’s why you might want to swap out your usual cuppa for a daily dose of this vibrant green powerhouse.
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a type of powdered green tea made from specially grown and processed Camellia sinensis leaves. Unlike regular green tea, which involves steeping and discarding the leaves, matcha involves consuming the entire leaf, ground into a fine powder. This method maximises nutrient intake and explains why matcha is often more potent than regular green tea.
“This means you consume the entirety of the tea leaf – all of the benefits of the whole plant are consumed,” explains Cape Town-based functional nutritionist Vanessa Ascencao. “How it is grown, harvested and milled ensures delivery of all its valuable nutrient content from the whole plant.”
The tea leaves are shade-grown for several weeks before harvest, which increases their chlorophyll and amino acid content, particularly a compound called L-theanine, which plays a key role in many of matcha’s benefits.
A Natural Energy Boost—Without the Crash
One of matcha’s biggest drawcards is its unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine. A cup of matcha contains around 70mg of caffeine, slightly less than a cup of coffee—but thanks to L-theanine, the caffeine is released more slowly, giving a sustained energy lift without the jitters or crash.
“One of the reasons I love matcha is that it contains L-theanine, an amino acid that supports relaxation and a sense of calm and yet enhances mental focus, so you get the benefits of caffeine without the jitters,” adds Vanessa.
A 2008 study published in Biological Psychology found that L-theanine significantly increased alpha brain wave activity, which is associated with relaxed alertness, perfect for busy women juggling work, family, and everything in between.
Antioxidant-Rich and Disease-Fighting
Matcha is a powerhouse of catechins, an antioxidant abundant in green tea. The most notable is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), known for its cancer-fighting, anti-inflammatory, and heart-protective properties.
According to a 2011 review in Chinese Medicine, EGCG has shown promise in reducing tumour growth and improving cardiovascular health by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol. According to a Journal of Chromatography A study, matcha is especially potent, containing up to 137 times more EGCG than regular green tea.

“ Matcha is more than just a trend— it’s a ritual that connects us to centuries of tradition, with every vibrant green sip. ”
For women conscious of heart health, ageing, or chronic disease prevention, matcha offers a daily, antioxidant-rich ritual.
Supports Weight Management
Are you looking to maintain a healthy weight or support your metabolism? Matcha may help. Studies show green tea extract, especially EGCG, can enhance fat oxidation during exercise and increase thermogenesis—the body’s calorie-burning process.
A 2005 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study showed that participants consuming green tea extract experienced greater fat loss over 12 weeks than those without. While it’s no miracle cure, matcha can complement your weight-management goals when paired with a healthy lifestyle.
Detoxifies the Body
That vibrant green hue? It’s thanks to chlorophyll, a natural detoxifier. Because matcha is shade-grown, it retains high chlorophyll levels, which may help eliminate heavy metals and toxins from the body.
Although the science around detox diets remains mixed, regularly consuming chlorophyll-rich foods, such as fancy matcha, offers a gentle, sustainable way to support the body’s detoxification systems.
It Calms the Mind and Enhances the Mood
Matcha is not only energising but also calming. L-theanine increases dopamine and serotonin levels and neurotransmitters influence mood, memory, and concentration. This dual action makes matcha a unique beverage that supports mental clarity and emotional well-being.
It’s no wonder matcha has been a key element in Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries. As Vanessa puts it, “I love the ritual of making it. Often, I have it in the afternoon with organic raw milk and cinnamon—it’s my way of creating a moment of calm.”
When wellness routines can feel overwhelming or expensive, matcha provides a simple, nourishing way to care for your body and mind. Whether sipping it in the morning or blending it into your favourite treats, this ancient green powder is a ritual worth adopting. ●

How to Enjoy Matcha
Cape Town-based product development chef Kira Jacobs says, “High-quality ceremonialgrade matcha offers a balanced flavour profile of bright citrus acidity, grassy undertones, and a subtle bitterness. It’s a beautifully complex ingredient but best used simply.”
She suggests experimenting with matcha in different ways:
Traditional Tea: Whisk ½–1 teaspoon of matcha powder with hot (not boiling) water until frothy.
Matcha Latte: Mix with steamed milk (dairy or plant-based) and a dash of honey or maple syrup.
Smoothie Booster: Add a spoonful to your morning smoothie for an antioxidant kick. Baking and Cooking: Fold into muffins, pancakes, or energy bites for a nutritious twist. “As long as you have a delicious base recipe,” says Kira, “matcha can only be a beautiful, vibrant addition.”
Kira prefers using matcha in recipes that require minimal heat to preserve its flavour and colour. “Instead of adding it to a dish that requires cooking, I use it as a finishing touch— stirred into sauces and dressings or lightly dusted over a dish just before serving.” Matcha also works beautifully in creamy desserts like gelato or folded into double-thick yoghurt or whipped cream.

Matcha Mindfulness
While matcha offers many benefits, both experts advise enjoying it in moderation. “Matcha contains caffeine, so it’s best enjoyed in moderation, especially for those sensitive to stimulants,” says Vanessa. She also advises consulting a healthcare provider before regular use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing liver-related conditions. Kira adds a final tip: store it well. “Light, oxygen, and heat are enemies of matcha—so ensure it’s kept in an airtight container and used as close to serving as possible.”
THE TEA WITH Mikayla McClean
The founder of Ceremony Matcha
South Africa shares her passion for Japan’s most treasured tea, her commitment to ethical sourcing and how a daily ritual can become a mindful moment of magic.
What inspired you to start Ceremony Matcha South Africa, and what drew you personally to matcha as a product?
I discovered matcha in 2014 thanks to a recommendation from a friend,, and from that first sip, I knew it was something special. I’ve never been a coffee person, so finding an energy source that felt calm, clean and aligned with how I wanted to feel was a big moment for me. Over time, I became drawn to the ritual behind it- the history, slowness, and intention. During my final year of university, I found myself pouring more and more energy into building Ceremony. It wasn’t a distraction; I felt deeply connected to it. I put my head down for months and quietly started laying the foundation for what Ceremony would become. It came from a real place of passion and purpose, and I’m proud that it’s grown into something others can connect with, too.
Ceremony Matcha South Africa sources its tea from Uji, Japan. Why is this region so important for quality matcha?
Uji is one of the oldest and most respected matcha-producing regions in Japan. Much like terroir in wine, the origin of your matcha affects everything—from taste to texture to nutritional value. The farmers in Uji have been refining their craft for centuries, using traditional methods like hand-picking, stone-grinding, and shadegrowing to produce the highest-quality
leaves. Uji matcha tends to have a rich, umami flavour with natural sweetness and low bitterness, which is exactly what we want in a ceremonial-grade matcha.
Can you tell us more about the ethical and sustainable practices behind your sourcing and harvesting methods?

We work closely with small farms in Japan that genuinely care about the land and the people working on it. They use traditional shadegrowing techniques and seasonal harvesting, which means no shortcuts, just time, intention, and care. These farms avoid synthetic pesticides, focus on soil health, and ensure fair working conditions. We source in small batches to keep things fresh and stay rooted in our values: conscious choices made with respect for the process.
What sets ceremonial-grade matcha apart from culinarygrade matcha for those new to the product?
Ceremonial-grade matcha is made from the youngest, softest leaves that give it that naturally sweet, smooth taste and bright green colour. It’s meant to be whisked and sipped independently, so no sugar or extras are needed. At Ceremony, we stone-grind our matcha slowly; it takes an hour to produce just one 40g bag, and we store it in cool temperatures to keep it fresh. Culinary-grade matcha isn’t meant to be sipped independently; it’s made from more mature leaves, so it tends to be more bitter, earthy, and less vibrant in colour. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad, it holds up well when mixed into lattes, smoothies, or baking, where you’re pairing it with other flavours. It’s functional, not ceremonial - perfect for recipes, just not the kind of matcha you’d want to whisk and sip straight.
How do you personally like to enjoy matcha? Do you have a daily ritual?
I like to keep it clean and simple, usually whisked with cold water and a splash of milk alternative. But when I’m craving something creamier, I’ll have a heavier hand with the oat milk, a dash of maple syrup, and a pinch of salt. I usually have it after breakfast or as a midday mood booster. Something is calming about the ritual, from sifting the powder to that first sip. It pulls me out of the rush and brings me back to myself. I always ask, How do I want to feel today? And matcha brings me back to calm, every single time.
INTERVIEW
Ceremony Matcha South Africa is beautifully branded. How do you see the role of aesthetics and ritual in the matcha experience?
At Ceremony, we design everything to slow you down and bring you into the moment. Every detail is intentional, from the soft texture of our packaging to the quiet act of whisking. But we also have fun with it. We don’t take ourselves too seriously; matcha can also be playful, expressive, and cultural. That balance of calm and joy is at the core of everything we do.

Matcha is packed with health benefits. Which ones do your customers seem most excited about?
L-theanine gives you clarity and focus without the crash or jitters that often come with coffee. It’s also gut-friendly. Matcha is rich in antioxidants like EGCG, which support digestion, ease inflammation, and help your microbiome stay balanced. On top of that, it’s known to support skin health, immunity, and metabolism, all in a gentle, natural way. But honestly? Beyond the science, it’s the way matcha makes you feel that keeps people coming back, clear, grounded, and happier.
Do you have any creative ideas for using matcha in recipes beyond tea and lattes?
What should someone look for when buying high-quality matcha? Any red flags to avoid?
Colour is your first clue. High-quality matcha should be a bold, vibrant green that tells you it’s fresh and packed with nutrients. It’s likely been sitting around for too long if it looks dull and has oxidized. Another red flag? No transparency. Trustworthy brands will tell you where their matcha comes from. Don’t be shy to ask questions. You’re on the right track if it smells fresh, looks vibrant, and tastes smooth.
There are so many ways! We share a few recipes over on @ceremonysouthafrica. Matcha has a slightly earthy, umami flavour that plays so well with sweet and savoury dishes. It’s more versatile than people think, and we love showing that side of it. We’ll release a few more recipes for our community to create with their Ceremony.
What’s next for Ceremony Matcha South Africa? Are there any exciting launches or collaborations in the pipeline? Something is simmering. We can’t spill the tea too soon but are beyond excited to share this with you. ●

1–2 tsp finely chopped chilli Salt to taste
FOR THE DIPPING SAUCE:
75 ml mayonnaise (optional, for dip sauce)
100 ml crème fraîche (optional, for dip sauce)
Method
1
Cook the base & prepare the marinade and dipping sauce: Start by cooking your rice or potatoes and preheat the grill. For the marinade, mix sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, finely chopped garlic and chilli, honey, soy sauce and salt to taste. Divide the marinade into two bowls - half is used for marinating the fish and the other half to make the dipping sauce. To make the dipping sauce, mix in 100 ml of crème fraîche and 75 ml of mayonnaise with the second bowl of marinade.
2 Prepare the fish: Cut the fish and peppers into 1 ½ inch (3 cm) chunks for easy skewering.
3
Assemble the skewers: Thread the pieces of fish, peppers, and tomatoes onto metal or soaked wooden skewers. Brush the marinade onto the skewers and let them stand for 15 minutes. Alternatively, brush on just before and during grilling.
4
Grill the skewers: Grease the grill and place the skewers on it. Cook for about 10 minutes, turning once or twice during grilling. The fish should be cooked through, and the fewer times you turn them, the less likely they will stick to the grill.
5
Serve and enjoy: Serve the skewers immediately with the dipping sauce and your choice of rice or potatoes and some seasonal vegetables.

Spiced hake tacos
Recipe by Naledi Toona, South Africa
Ingredients
3 pieces of MSC-certified hake medallions or fillets (or whitefish alternative like haddock or cod)
1 cup of flour (or whole-wheat or oat flour)
1 tablespoon of fish spice
1 teaspoon of paprika
Half a teaspoon of turmeric
Olive oil for cooking to taste
1-8 readymade mini whole-wheat (or corn) tortillas (or a suitable alternative)
1 pack of readymade slaw mix (roughly 350 gr) or you can make your own slaw using:
1 cup of green cabbage, thinly sliced
1 cup of purple cabbage, thinly sliced
Half a cup of carrots, shredded
Optional: Handful of coriander and/or baby spinach leaves.
FOR THE SAUCE USE:
1 cup of reduced-oil mayonnaise or cream cheese
1 tablespoon of soy sauce
3 sprigs garlic chives or spring onions
Prep time: 15 min
Cooking time: 30 min
Serves 3
Chef top tip:
This taco recipe is versatile. The tortillas can be substituted for a spinach or beetroot base tortilla. For a twist packed with health benefits, add sliced avocado and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

Method
1 Prepare the fish: Cut hake medallions into bite-sized pieces.
2
Season and coat: In a bowl, mix flour with fish spice, turmeric, and paprika. Toss the hake pieces in the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
3
Cook the fish: Heat a little oil in a wide pan. Add the hake pieces, cooking for about 5 minutes, turning halfway until golden. Drain on paper towels.
4
Make the slaw: Finely shred cabbage using a mandoline, or food processor, or make thin slices with a knife. Grate the carrots on the larger side of a box grater. You can also save time using a pre-made slaw and if you have leftovers, you can use it for a side dish or as a topping on another meal, reducing food waste.
5
Mix the dressing: In a bowl, whisk mayo, soy sauce, and sprigs. Add the slaw mix to the dressing and stir to combine.
6
Present it: Place the mini tortillas on a board. Spread the slaw mix on each, topping with a few hake pieces. Fold in half. Before serving, you can toast the tortilla in a hot dry pan to give it more crunch.

Creamy Millet Porridge with honey-roasted figs, almond and seed toffee
This recipe is pure comfort food, both for our senses and for the good bacteria in our gut, as both millet and figs act as prebiotics – food for our healthy gut bacteria. Serves 2
Ingredients
PORRIDGE
½ cup (100 g) hulled millet*, soaked in water overnight and drained
2 cups (500 ml) water
1 cup (250 ml) almond milk (or any nut milk), plus extra to serve (optional)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon vanilla bean powder*
ALMOND AND SEED TOFFEE
2 tablespoons almonds
3 teaspoons raw honey
1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
1 tablespoon sunflower seeds
1 teaspoon black sesame seeds
Honey-roasted figs
2 ripe figs
1 teaspoon raw honey
Method
1
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line two small baking trays (baking sheets) with baking paper.
2
Place the millet in a medium saucepan, add the water and milk, along with cinnamon and vanilla, and bring to a boil.
3
Decrease the heat and gently simmer over low heat, stirring frequently, for 20–25 minutes, until the millet is tender, with a slight bite remaining, and most of the liquid has been absorbed, resulting in a creamy porridge consistency.
4
Meanwhile, to prepare the almond and seed toffee, scatter the almonds on one of the prepared trays.
5
Drizzle with two teaspoons of the honey and bake for 5 minutes. Scatter the pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame seeds over the almonds, then drizzle with the remaining honey and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the almonds and seeds are golden and the honey has caramelised. Set aside to cool until the honey toffee hardens. Break into shards or coarsely chop.
6
To prepare the honey-roasted figs, tear the figs in half from the stem to the base. Place, torn side up, on the remaining tray and drizzle with honey.
7 Bake for 15 minutes, or until softened and juicy.
8 Serve the porridge hot, topped with warm honey-roasted figs and shards of almond and seed toffee.
9 Serve with additional milk, if desired.
Sweet potato latkes with goat’s cheese cream, sautéed spinach and poached egg
Potato latkes make an excellent base for everything from eggs to chicken to vegetables, being both delicious and containing prebiotics that feed the good bacteria in your gut.
Serves 4 (Makes 8)
Ingredients
a splash of white vinegar
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon ghee
250 g English spinach, coarsely chopped juice of 1⁄2 lemon
Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste chilli sauce, to serve micro herbs, to garnish (optional)
SWEET POTATO LATKES
350 g sweet potato (approx. 1 medium)
1⁄2 small red onion, thinly sliced
Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 large egg, lightly beaten ghee, for frying
GOAT’S CHEESE CREAM
150 g soft goat’s cheese
1⁄4 cup (60 ml) coconut cream
1 1⁄2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 small clove of garlic, crushed
Method
1 Preheat the oven to 150°C.
2
To make the goat’s cheese cream, mix the goat’s cheese, coconut cream, lemon juice and garlic in a small bowl until smooth. Season with salt. Set aside.
3
To prepare the sweet potato latkes, peel and coarsely grate the sweet potato. Squeeze out excess moisture in a clean tea towel (dish towel).

4 Combine the sweet potato and onion in a medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add the egg and stir until well combined.
5
Heat a tablespoon of ghee in a large nonstick frying pan over low to medium heat. Cook the latkes in batches, spooning two heaped tablespoons of the mixture into the pan for each and gently flattening them slightly. Cook for 3 minutes on each side, or until crisp and golden brown. Transfer the latkes onto a plate and place them in the oven to keep warm while you cook the remaining latkes.
6
Bring a medium saucepan of water to a gentle simmer. Add a splash of vinegar. Create a whirlpool in the water and carefully crack the eggs, one at a time, into the centre. Poach the eggs for 2–3 minutes, until the whites are firm but the yolks are still soft. Remove using a slotted spoon and set on clean kitchen paper to drain.
7 Meanwhile, heat a teaspoon of ghee in a frying pan and cook the spinach until just wilted. Add a squeeze of lemon and season with salt and pepper.
8
Serve the latkes topped with the goat’s cheese cream, wilted spinach and poached eggs. Drizzle with chilli sauce (or fresh or dried chilli if chilli sauce is unavailable), and micro herbs, if desired.

Green minestrone
A gentle and nourishing alternative to a traditional tomato-based minestrone, with cleansing and alkalising properties. Green veggies boost glutathione, oxygenate the blood and support the liver. Substitute the chicken stock to enhance the restorative properties of this soup.
Serves 4-6
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 leek, white part only, thinly sliced
2 sticks of celery, diced
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 small head of broccoli, broken into small florets and stalk diced
1 zucchini diced
6 cups (1.5 litres) vegetable broth
150 g green beans, trimmed and halved crossways
3 large stems of kale, deveined and coarsely chopped
1 cup fresh or frozen peas
2 large handfuls flat-leaf (Italian) parsley, coarsely chopped
1 large handful mint leaves, coarsely chopped
1 large handful basil leaves, coarsely chopped, finely grated zest of 1 unwaxed lemon
Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper
freshly grated parmesan cheese, to serve (optional)
Method
1
Heat the oil in a large saucepan over low heat. Cook the leek, celery and garlic until softened. Add the broccoli and zucchini and stir to combine.
2
Pour in the broth and bring to the boil. Decrease the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the beans and simmer for a further 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are just tender.
3
Add the kale, peas, parsley, mint, basil and lemon zest and simmer for 5 minutes, or until the kale has wilted and the peas are tender. Season with salt and pepper.
4
Serve topped with freshly grated Parmesan, if desired.

RECIPES
Mango and passionfruit ‘cheesecake’
A delicious dairy-free cheesecake. Macadamias contain thiamine, which increases acid in the gut to aid digestion and boost skin health. Coconut is rich in anti-inflammatory lauric acid and medium-chain fatty acids that the body can efficiently utilise for energy. Serves 8
Ingredients
coconut oil, for greasing
BASE
½ cup (85 g) raw macadamias
½ cup (50 g) desiccated (shredded) coconut
2 medjool dates, pitted
1 tablespoon coconut oil, warmed ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon pinch of Himalayan salt
MANGO FILLING
¼ cup (60 ml) cold water
1 tablespoon grass-fed powdered gelatine*
¾ cup (180 ml) full-fat coconut cream
1 cup (150 g) raw cashews, soaked in cold water overnight
1 medium–large ripe mango, flesh coarsely chopped (approx. 300 g of flesh)
1 lime, zest finely grated and juiced
2 tablespoons coconut oil, warmed
2 tablespoons maple syrup, or to taste
PASSIONFRUIT TOPPING
1/3 cup (80 ml) cold water
1½ teaspoons grass-fed powdered gelatine*
6 passionfruit, plus extra to serve
Method
1 Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly grease and line the base and sides of a 16 cm-diameter round springform tin with baking paper.
2 To prepare the base, spread the macadamias onto a small tray and roast for 5–10 minutes, until golden.
3 Set aside to cool.
4
Place the cooled macadamias and the remaining ingredients in a high-speed blender. Blend to combine and coarsely chop the macadamias. The macadamias should still have some texture. Press into the base of the prepared tin. Smooth with the back of a spoon. Refrigerate for 15 minutes, or until the mixture is firm.
5
To prepare the mango filling, pour the water into a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatine evenly over its surface. Set aside for 10 minutes to soften.
6
Gently heat the coconut cream in a small saucepan until hot. Add the softened gelatine and stir until well combined. Set aside to cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally.
7 Drain and rinse the cashews. Combine the cashews, cooled gelatine cream and remaining ingredients in a high-speed food processor. Blend until smooth.
8Pour the filling into the base. Tap the base firmly on the bench to remove any air bubbles. Refrigerate for 2 hours, or until the mixture begins to set.
9To prepare the passionfruit topping, pour the water into a small bowl and sprinkle the gelatine evenly over its surface. Set aside for 10 minutes to soften.
10Scoop out the passionfruit pulp and strain through a fine-mesh sieve. You should end up with approximately 100 ml of passionfruit juice.
11Discard the seeds.
12
Gently heat the passionfruit juice in a small saucepan until hot. Add the softened gelatine and stir until well combined. Set aside to cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally to prevent from setting.
13
Once cooled, pour the cheesecake filling over. Refrigerate for an additional 2 hours, or until the mixture is completely set.
14Serve drizzled with extra passionfruit pulp.

Note:
For a vegetarian version, omit the gelatine and freeze at each stage to set. Remove from the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes before serving to allow it to soften slightly. The cheesecake can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Glowing from within,
A CONVERSATION WITH CARLA OATES
Carla Oates, founder of The Beauty Chef, has transformed how we approach skin health with her belief that beauty begins in the belly®. Her latest cookbook shares 150 gluten- and dairy-free recipes to nourish the gut and glow from within. We caught up with her to talk about her journey, her food philosophy and the link between gut health and radiant skin.
You’ve had a unique career path, from fashion stylist to founder of The Beauty Chef. What sparked your interest in gut health and inner beauty?
I spent the first 10 years of my working life as a fashion stylist before turning my attention to beauty writing. But the allure quickly wore off as I became alarmed by many commercial beauty products’ synthetic substances and toxins. I began writing about healthier, natural alternatives made from plants and organic foods and wrote my first book, Feeding Your Skin.
When my family began experiencing skin issues, my research into the gut-skin connection led me to experiment with fermenting skin-loving whole foods in my kitchen at home. In 2009, I created Glow®—a groundbreaking fermented super nutrient powder with pre-, pro-, and postbiotics—and The Beauty Chef was born.
Can you tell us about the moment you realised there was a link between gut health and skin health?
As a child, I suffered from eczema and allergies, and my mum took me to see a naturopath who dramatically changed what I ate, removing processed foods as well as allergens such as gluten and dairy from my diet. My allergies and eczema dramatically subsided. I learnt firsthand the connection between food and medicine and how our diet directly impacts our skin and health.
When my daughter started experiencing eczema and allergies, I eliminated trigger foods like dairy and gluten from her diet. Still, I also started researching the link between gut and skin health and found some of the studies interesting. I put my family on a gut-healing protocol, which included eliminating certain foods from our diet and introducing lots of lacto-fermented
whole foods teeming with beneficial bacteria (aka probiotics). These included foods like sauerkraut, kefir and kimchi, and once I began experimenting with fermenting whole foods, this became part of our diet as well.
Friends and family started to take notice, asking what I was doing differently as my skin was glowing. That’s when I realised I was on the brink of something special and wanted to empower more people to learn about the gut-skin connection.
Your daughter’s skin issues catalysed The Beauty Chef journey. What did that healing process teach you as a mother and a formulator?
As a mother, I want my children to be happy and healthy; nothing else really matters. The Beauty Chef was born from an innate desire to help my daughter, and as a formulator, I now carry that
same mindset to create products that help people. Whether through glowing skin, gut health, energy, sleep, immunity, bowel health, or whole-body wellness, assisting people ultimately drives me.
Which recipes from The Beauty Chef are favourites in your home kitchen right now?
Get Up & Glow smoothie. When I have time in the morning, I love whipping up a smoothie. I’ll pop some frozen berries, coconut yoghurt, avocado, and any nuts I have on hand in a blender, along with my daily dose of Glow Ageless™ and Collagen Boost™ with water or milk. It’s so easy and such a good way to start the day.
Body Protein+™ Vanilla and Coconut Energy-Boost Balls. Getting enough protein in your day is so important for supporting healthy muscles, tissue recovery, and repair. Having these on hand for a quick snack during the day really helps me reach my goal, and they taste delicious!
Chermoula-Baked Barramundi. Making baked fish is so easy and never fails to impress. Plus, it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart and brain health.
Healthy sleep hot chocolate. Before bed, I’ll pour myself a warm cup of Sleep Ritual™. If I feel extra indulgent, I’ll blitz it with nut milk, dates, miso and almond butter for a miso caramel twist.
Fermented foods play a significant role in your approach to nutrition. What are some easy ways people can start incorporating them into their diets?
Before I started The Beauty Chef, nobody talked about gut health, and fermented foods were harder to come by. Now, supermarket shelves are stocked with kombucha, kimchi, kefir, tempeh, and sauerkraut, which all make

great additions to meals; just be sure to read the label to ensure they’ve undergone an authentic fermentation process.
Taking Glow® or Glow Ageless™ is one of the easiest ways to incorporate fermented foods into your daily routine. Fermented using our exclusive Flora Culture® process, Glow® and Glow Ageless™ contain natural broadspectrum pre, pro and postbiotics alongside a super nutrient blend of fermented whole foods for glowing skin, gut health and whole-body wellness. 1 teaspoon daily ticks off 200% of your RDI of vitamin C, 50% of your RDI of
zinc, 25% of your RDI of niacinamide & energy-boosting biotin, plus provitamin A for cellular turnover. Glow Ageless™ also contains iodine, vitamin D and magnesium to support those aged 50+.
You collaborate with microbiologists and nutritionists to develop your products. How does science influence your creative process?
Most of my ideas originate from speaking to people and learning about their wants, needs, or hurdles. That’s usually how the creative process kicks off. It’s then a matter of using the most

recent research, alongside evidencebased ingredients and our unique fermentation process, to create highly efficacious formulas that not only provide a solution but are also convenient and delicious.
For example, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is four times as likely to occur in people with eczema. At the same time, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) is ten times as prevalent in people with acne and rosacea. Studies like this have influenced the creation of products, including Gut Primer™, which is powered by evidence-based herbs
to soothe and repair the gut lining, and Clear Skin™, which is specifically formulated to combat blemishes and clarify congested skin.
We focus on using science-backed and evidence-based ingredients to create our formulas, too; our Plumpers™ Collagen Chewables contain Verisol® hydrolysed collagen peptides, a science-backed ingredient that increases collagen and reduces eye wrinkles. Recently, we developed The Perfect Poo™, which harnesses science-back Solnul®, a resistant starch prebiotic that studies have shown feeds the microbiome and supports microbial diversity for a healthy gut.
In your view, what are some of the most misunderstood aspects of gut health today?
A common misconception is that you must eliminate certain food groups to have a healthy gut. While some people benefit from a low FODMAP diet, it’s not necessary to foster good gut health.
Education is a key part of The Beauty Chef. I’m passionate about empowering people through knowledge about the gut-skin connection and how the gut microbiome supports glowing skin and
overall well-being. By sharing blogs, recipes, and wellness tips, our community can make informed decisions and support their gut health in ways that suit their needs and lifestyle.
What are some signs that someone’s skin issues may be linked to poor gut health?
More and more research shows that where skin conditions have manifested, or there is skin inflammation, there’s also gut inflammation. Some skin signs may include—but aren’t limited to—dryness, dullness, uneven skin tone, eczema, acne, and rosacea—and even premature skin ageing, known as ‘inflammageing’.
Beyond diet, what daily rituals or wellness habits help keep you balanced and glowing?
Exercise is a big part of my life, particularly walking and Pilates. Walking works wonders for me mentally and emotionally. It’s like a natural filing system for my brain. It’s both cathartic and calming and energising. My mind can be full of thoughts, problems, and ideas, but by the end of the walk, I often have solutions, resolve, and a sense of calm.
The world of beauty and wellness is constantly evolving. What trends or shifts are you most excited about right now?
I’m hoping the light continues to shine on women’s health—something that’s long been misunderstood and under-researched. I’m a passionate ambassador of the Royal Hospital for Women, and there’s so much that needs to be addressed, including—but not limited to—breast care, gynaecology, menopause, reproductive medicine, and overall hormonal health. The conversation is opening, but there’s a long way to go.
In terms of ingredients, it changes daily! There’s always new research and studies piquing my interest. Activated B vitamins, creatine, and electrolytes are among some of the ingredients I’m currently researching.
What’s next for you and The Beauty Chef brand? Any exciting developments on the horizon?
There’s always something happening in The Beauty Chef Probiotic Lab! All I can say is, watch this space. ●

BRING LOVE INTO YOUR HOME WITH THE LEFTOVERS OF NATURE AND SECOND-HAND TREASURES
BY TARA SLOGGETT

Styling Tara Sloggett
Photographs Warren Heath, Bureaux

Never has there been a period where we spend so much time at home and appreciate the nature around us. Combine the two and you have something really special. Bring the rawness and innocence of nature into your home with delicate dried specimens, pods, flowers and grasses and fulfil your soul by choosing to re-love furniture cast aside by others.

ABANDONED TREASURES
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as creating something beautiful that costs virtually nothing. Grasses and dried bushes, fallen pinecones or twigs picked up whilst on a walk on the common can be transformed with little know-how. You can even extend the life of your shop-bought flowers by using dried hydrangeas and eucalyptus.
• Foraged finds with texture and detail-sometimes that’s all you need.
• Always be conscious of where you’re foraging. Only forage where there is plenty of everything and if in doubt, just ask if it’s okay. You’ll find most people only too happy to share. Always have a pair of good secateurs with you.
DISPLAYING AT HOME
• With such beauty and form in the simplest and most subtle of ways, single stems, especially if displayed together can look elegantly striking. Think about creating different heights and textures with a subtle underlying unison.
• The secret to keeping them standing upright is to use a flower frog, a tiny, weighted surface of spikes that secures stems in place. For dried flowers just push it into place and you have an instant display, and if you prefer a more finished look, you can disguise it by placing it in a pretty dish. For fresh flowers, just add water.
• Hanging installations are very much on-trend and although they look too tricky to handle, they’re

actually very simple. Create a basic structure by making a hollow sausage shape out of chicken wire and secure the shape with the wire itself or with cable ties. You’ll need some wire cutters for this. This creates a “housing”through which to poke your dried pieces. It’s easier to create your floral piece whilst it’s hanging, so tie the fishing gut on each end to hang, (the fishing gut will make it look like it’s floating in the air). Then start feeding your dried flowers through the chicken wire. Favourites are often dried hydrangeas, grasses and dried eucalyptus. Poke them through, taking time to build up layers and once you’re happy, tidy up the ends by cutting with secateurs. Fill in any gaps with additional dried pieces or flower heads and if needed, secure any stems with clear cable ties or twine. If your piece is only seen from the front, you won’t need to worry about the back, but if you can walk around it, then make sure it looks fabulous all the way round
• A wreath isn’t just for Christmas, adorn your walls all year, inside and out. Create your own base with twigs or add foraged finds to a shop-bought ring.

NATURE’S PALETTE
Neutrals work all year round, but a splash of blue and mustard can bring a rich, inviting, cosy feel just in time for Autumn.
• Combine key pieces in warm woods and bamboo. With linen floppy soft furnishings, a vintage print, you have relaxed modern country living at its finest.
• Just one huge, dried piece in a vase is so simple but creates a huge impact.
• Mix blue tableware with mustard pops, and cutlery in a mix of woods with just a touch of gold.
• A single stem makes an elegant place setting and twigs displayed with the initial of your guest add a fun personal touch.
• Take your style outdoors. An old factory bench, relaxed washed out cushions, dried tumbleweeds and the best yet, bamboo hula-hoops, all make for the perfect Autumn Day. ●

TEN OF THE BEST ALL-NATURAL BEDROOMS
BY ROBYN ALEXANDER
Production Sven Alberding, Tille del Negro
Photographs Greg Cox/ Bureaux
Combining an array of materials and textures, from natural stone to wood, linen, bamboo, river pebbles, and more, these bedrooms have one covetable key trait: an atmosphere of complete and total tranquillity.
1. FARM STYLE
A Swedish filmmaker and photographer’s Mallorca home manifests his dream of creating a house that is ‘very welcoming and with a warm, cosy feeling,’ he says. The architectural brief was to preserve the dwelling’s original farmhouse features, making for rustic yet comfortable spaces. In this bedroom, vintage linen combines with rustic wooden stools to create a traditional yet casual feel.
2. INSIDE OUT
Situated at the end of the bedroom wing of a family home in Constantia, Cape Town, this master suite sports spectacular views of the garden over the vineyards and the mountains beyond. Floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors enable those views while sliding cedar screens create privacy. The bedroom appears to float from the garden, an impression enhanced by the planting where the floor meets the ground.

Tip
Elements of extreme simplicity—there is no added ceiling, and the off-shutter concrete roof is left raw—combine with luxuriously ample curtaining to create a space that feels comfortably sheltered yet also wide open to the natural world outside.

3. HEART OF STONE
The pared-back main bedroom in this Mediterranean holiday home showcases the textures of the stone wall uncovered during a recent update. An extra element of originality comes from the two stone hitching posts—originally used for tethering animals and discovered in the courtyard of the property during the renovation—that are set into the wall to hang and display clothing items and accessories.
Tip
Keep the focus on a feature wall by ensuring that everything else in the space is resolutely minimalistic. When it comes to decor, avoid the temptation to add colour or anything beyond the essentials. Here, a pair of standing lamps from IKEA (ikea.com) provides illumination and two slender floating shelves function as bedside pedestals.
4. TROPIC WONDER
This enviable bedroom is in a holiday house near Vilanculos, Mozambique, Casa Comprida— Portuguese for Long House. It’s right on the beach, with a traditional fronded jekka roof. The homeowner asked the architects to create a way to suspend the very necessary night-time mosquito net from above rather than having a four-poster bed, so they designed a delicate yet robust frame that cantilevers off the back of the headboard to support it.
Tip
Airy natural linen and netting—all in white—add much-needed elements of crisp coolness in a tropical setting. Anchor these with chunky, rough-hewn furnishings and finish with decor accents in natural tones to bring the landscape’s colours indoors.

WINGS
BEDROOM
5. COUNTRY LIFE
The architect who owns this holiday home in a small village in South Africa consciously chose authentic details—no skirting boards or tiles were added in its renovation, for example—to retain and enhance its rural simplicity. As soon as the damaged interior plaster was stripped back, the original mud bricks used to build the walls were revealed, so these were bagplastered and painted white to enhance their textured charm.

Tip
Painting the original timber floors, ceilings (as well as the walls) white has transformed this bedroom into a light and airy cocoon, perfect for breakfast in bed and summer afternoon naps. Its furnished, rather than fitted, aesthetic further enhances the space’s rural feel.
6. DREAM CATCHER
Exquisite textiles are showcased throughout this home, located in hilly central Mallorca with almond trees, vineyards and a picturesque village nearby – but its owner’s love of the best linen is nowhere better demonstrated than in this ethereal bedroom.
Continuously collecting can be a handy way to build beautifully layered spaces. ‘I always buy textiles,’ says the homeowner. ‘I don’t always know what to do with them or where I’ll put them. I buy what I love.’

Tip
Try Egyptian cotton or pure linen from the high-end Italian store Society (www.societylimonta.com) to recreate this look, only in pure white or subtle tones of sandy beige.
7. WOOD WORKS
In this, the home’s main bedroom is at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town, with sliding doors open to a balcony with spectacular natural views. Inside, luxuriously large swathes of wooden panelling conceal plenty of storage space and an en-suite bathroom. The tactile wood panelling contrasts beautifully with the raw concrete of the staircase that leads up into the space and is cleverly offset by a minimalist cream linen bedspread.

Tip
Depending on how they are used, naturals can look and feel very contemporary. The ultra-wide floorboards chosen for this space give it a modern feel, even though wood is the most traditional building material.

8. SIMPLE PLEASURE
This poolside guest suite is located in an old outbuilding close to a renovated holiday home in Sóller, Mallorca. It features a sculptural built-in bed topped with cushions in many natural textiles and a delightfully rustic (and barefoot-friendly) flooring finish handmade by laying small river pebbles in concrete. Tip
Decorative touches are essential in simple bedrooms but shouldn’t overwhelm or clutter the space. The metal light fitting used here is precisely the correct scale, as is the group of simple vases on the built-in shelf behind the bed, which are by Mallorcan ceramicist Dora Good (www.doraceramics.com).
BEDROOM
9. FINE ROMANCE
Pure white walls, ceilings and poured white Pandomo (pandomo.com.au) micro-cement flooring form an airy backdrop for the unpainted wood and natural textures that enliven this master bedroom. The fireplace assures flickering warmth during the winter months, adding yet another dimension to the romantic yet easy-going feel of the space.
Tip
Use decor elements to add playful and dramatic touches as required. Here, the vintage peacock chair and four-poster add personality to the room, while the sheepskins and ceramic pots on the mantelpiece provide extra tactility.

10. IN THE ABSTRACT
Proof positive that an all-natural bedroom can be highly sophisticated, this space combines a softly finished micro-cement floor with plenty of other natural materials – including wood, bamboo, jute and linen – to create real depth and subtle sensuality. The bedding and scatter cushions in shades of green, grey and blue add touches of freshness and a genuinely inviting feel. ●
Tip
Look out for vintage bamboo pieces, such as this gorgeous wall hanging found at a local flea market. Its satiny patina, created by time and use, adds a unique and memorable touch to a pared-back scheme.

When your pet slows down
it might be more than old age
GETTING OLDER DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN GIVING UP ON PLAYTIME. IF YOUR CAT OR DOG IS MOVING LESS OR SEEMS STIFF, THEY MAY BE DEALING WITH OSTEOARTHRITIS.
By Anje Hill
“ Pets can’t tell us when they’re in pain, but their behaviour often speaks volumes. ”

Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD), is a common and progressively debilitating condition that impacts the mobility, mood and quality of life of both cats and dogs. Because our pets can’t vocalise their pain, many owners miss the early warning signs. A once bouncy dog that now hesitates on stairs, or a cat that stops jumping onto favourite surfaces, may be trying to tell you something.
It’s a widespread issue in older pets, especially those with hip or elbow dysplasia, as well as breeds predisposed to joint conditions. OA causes inflammation, discomfort and gradual stiffness, quietly stealing their spark.
According to Dr. Guy Fyvie, Senior Veterinary Affairs Manager at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, “Pets can’t tell us when they’re in pain, but their behaviour often speaks volumes. Early detection and proper care are key to managing mobility issues and improving quality of life.”

Dr Shawn Finch, a veterinary expert writing for dvm360, agrees that OA is “a specific, treatable condition; although it is progressive, it usually has a good prognosis.” That prognosis improves significantly when the signs are caught early and treatment begins promptly.
SUPPLEMENTS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Supplements can play a vital role in managing OA from the outset. GCS Joint Care Advanced, formulated by Kyron Vet Rx, offers a blend of six active ingredients designed to support joint health throughout your pet’s life. This includes Type II collagen to maintain cartilage structure, Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) to ease inflammation, and a combination of Glucosamine and Chondroitin to keep joint fluid balanced and cartilage resilient. It also features Green-Lipped Mussel extract, known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and joint-protective properties.
This supplement is suitable not only for older pets showing signs of joint degeneration, but also for younger cats and dogs in higher-risk breeds. GCS is available in powders, chews and liquid form, making it easy to include in their daily routine.
SMALL CHANGES, BIG RELIEF
While supplements help at a cellular level, small changes around the home can also make a world of difference. Think soft, orthopaedic beds for

restful sleep, pet-friendly ramps or steps to help them reach favourite spots, and non-slip rugs to support safer movement on tiles or wooden floors. Even raising food and water bowls a little can relieve pressure on sore joints.
And don’t underestimate the power of regular movement. Gentle walks or play sessions

tailored to your pet’s ability can help keep joints limber without adding strain. “Winter doesn’t have to be a season of discomfort for your pets,” says Dr. Fyvie. “With the right support and early intervention, your dog or cat can enjoy the colder months with ease, energy and less pain.”
Hydrotherapy, stretching exercises and veterinary-guided physiotherapy may also be recommended for pets with more advanced symptoms.
WEIGHT MATTERS
Carrying extra weight puts significant pressure on ageing joints. “Pet obesity is still the biggest health concern for our cats and dogs, and any extra weight puts more strain on already painful joints,” explains Dr. Fyvie.
Veterinarians recommend regular weight checks and portion-controlled diets to maintain a healthy weight. Even small losses in excess weight can greatly improve mobility and reduce discomfort.
Breed Watch
Some breeds are genetically more prone to joint issues. Keep a closer watch on:
• Labrador Retrievers
• Golden Retrievers
• German Shepherds
• Rottweilers
• Border Collies
• Great Danes
• Scottish Folds (cats)
• Maine Coons (cats)
Regular check-ups and joint care supplements can help manage risk from an early age.
HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT
Many cats and dogs learn to hide their pain, and changes can be subtle. You may notice that your cat is no longer climbing to their usual perch, or your dog avoids rough play or long walks. These are red flags.
“Cats are masters at masking pain,” says Dr. Fyvie. “But subtle shifts in their behaviour can indicate joint discomfort. It’s important to pay attention to changes, even if they seem small.”
Caregivers who know their pet’s normal routines are often the first to notice something’s not quite right. Observation, empathy and early action make all the difference.
[subhead] Supporting Them at Every Stage With the right combination of pain relief, supplements, environmental adjustments and supportive exercise, cats and dogs with OA can continue to enjoy a good quality of life. “Pets with osteoarthritis need patience and grace,” says Dr. Finch, reminding us that joint health is about more than just mobility, it’s about maintaining dignity and joy.
GCS Joint Care Advanced is one of several tools that can help your pet stay comfortable, active and engaged for longer. It’s never too early, or too late to support the joints that carry their love and loyalty through every step of life. ●

STYLE Escape in
Sun City’s Family Retreat is Better than Ever
STYLISHLY REDESIGNED AND ROOTED IN NATURE, THE RESERVE AT SUN CITY OFFERS THE IDEAL SELF-CATERING ESCAPE FOR FAMILIES. WITH BOLD INTERIORS AND THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES, THIS REFRESHED RETREAT PROMISES COMFORT, CONNECTION AND LASTING HOLIDAY MEMORIES.
For women planning meaningful holidays filled with family memories and beautiful design, The Reserve at Sun City is about to become even more irresistible. A sweeping R210-million refurbishment, due to reach 95% completion by December 2025, is breathing new life into this self-catering retreat that has been part of family traditions since 1996.
Created in response to growing demand for family-style accommodation, The Reserve was Sun International’s first timeshare development. Nearly three decades later, it remains a favourite, with 90% of its 234 units and two Villas already sold, a reflection of its timeless appeal to South African families. This transformation follows the runaway success of Lefika Villas, launched in 2022, which drew widespread interest

from both new and existing members of the Sun Vacation Club. “The success of Lefika Villas proved that there is an appetite for high-end, nature-connected escapes,” explains Group General Manager Janita Donaldson, “and signalled that it was time to bring The Reserve in line with the elevated expectations of our guests.”
The updated interiors, imagined by Blacksmith Interior Inspiration, are designed to whisk guests into the heart of the African wild. “The design draws from natural materials and textures – from stone-look tiles to savannah-inspired wallpapers,” says Director Ryan Ilgner. Expect bold, bespoke fabrics, statement wildlife headboards, and soft, ambient lighting that mimics the calm of dusk in the bush.
There’s an elegant contrast at play; rich timber furniture is paired with crisp white shutters and LED lighting to create spaces that are both stylish and grounded. The palette of calming blues and earth tones brings a sense of escape while keeping the focus on effortless family living.
But the upgrade is about more than just aesthetics. “It represents more than just an upgrade, it’s a reinvigoration of Sun International’s commitment to quality, comfort and creating holidays that connect people to nature and each other,” says Donaldson.
A quick trip from the main attractions of Sun City, The Reserve offers easy access to everything from golf and water sports to

dining, spa experiences, shopping, and more. It’s the ideal choice for women looking to treat their families or themselves to a relaxing escape in style, surrounded by the beauty of South Africa’s natural landscape. ●

WALK THAT HEALS Women, Wilderness and the
WE CAME FOR THE VIEWS. WE LEFT WITH FULL HEARTS, STRONGER LEGS, AND A SHARED LOVE FOR POTJIE, PINK SKIES, AND THE GENTLE WILD OF DE HOOP.
By Anje Hill
A dip at Hippo Pools

Sometimes, all it takes is four days in the wild with good food, great company and wide-open skies to remind you what matters. Our group of women arrived at De Hoop Nature Reserve, not quite knowing what to expect. Some of us knew each other, some didn’t. But by the end of the De Hoop: Vlei to Whales Trail, we were walking slower, not because of tired legs, but because none of us wanted it to end. This fully guided, fully catered, four-day trail is designed to connect you with nature without giving up the creature comforts that allow you to rest and recharge properly. Think wild coastal hikes and golden-hour snacks, followed by a warm shower, a proper bed and chocolate cake still warm from the oven.
Day One: Into the Wild
Our adventure began at the gate, water bottles in hand and spirits high. Eddie, our guide and storyteller supreme, greeted us like old friends. Within minutes, we were walking through Flatrock, surrounded by the rich smells of fynbos and limestone hills rolling into the distance.
This first 6km stretch took us to Tierhoek, where we were welcomed with bubbles, snacks and panoramic views of the Vlei, a shimmering ribbon of water framed by birdlife and soft hills. That first sip of MCC, overlooking a protected paradise, felt like the start of something deeply healing.
We were then transferred to De Mond Villa, our luxurious base for two nights. Off-the-grid and beautifully appointed, it sits right on the edge of the Vlei. Watching the sunset over the water with a glass of Overberg wine in hand, we were already in love. Chef Philip Lottering sealed the deal with his slow-cooked lamb potjie and individual apple crumbles. It was the kind of meal that makes you quiet for all the right reasons.
We came for the views. We left with full hearts and a deeper bond with nature and each other.
Day Two: Vlei, Dunes and a Cake to Remember
Woken early with coffee and rusks on the stoep, we began our second day walking along the Vlei’s edge. The morning light was soft and flamingos flew overhead as we moved through gentle trails. Eddie stopped to explain the importance of dune buchu and how the Strandlopers once used it to mask human scent while hunting. His passion was infectious.
We crossed to Melkkamer Manor House, a beautifully restored 1800s homestead, by boat. Here we were treated to a sprawling brunch that included just-baked bread, fresh cheeses and more bubbles. From Melkkamer, we were transferred to Opstal, the heart of De Hoop’s hospitality hub, before setting out on an afternoon walk through plains of fynbos dotted with Cape Mountain Zebra and Bontebok. Back at De Mond, the afternoon was ours. Some swam in the pool, some journaled in the sun and some just listened to the bird calls echoing off the water. And then came the cake — rich, chocolatey and made by the same hands that stirred the potjie the night before. There was silence again, then laughter. We were becoming a trail family.

Day Three: Coastline, Rockpools and Vultures
On day three we headed to Koppie Alleen, where the dunes give way to dramatic ocean views. From here, we walked the final 7km of the iconic Whale Trail, but in reverse, tracing a path known for being one of the best whale-watching spots in South Africa. Between June and November, you’re likely to spot southern right whales breaching just offshore. This stretch is pure coastal magic, where the ocean breeze and salt air seem to scrub your thoughts clean.
We stopped at Hippo Pools to swim and snack, and later at Wyoming, the final hut on the Whale Trail, for a picnic lunch of local cheese, quiche and fresh rolls. From there, we were transferred to Potberg Mountain, home to the Western Cape’s last surviving Cape vulture colony. We hiked 2km up to the viewing deck and waited. Slowly, these giants with their 2.5-metre wingspans began to arrive, silent, strong and soaring.
We spent our last night at Melkkamer, a historic manor so full of charm and character that you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Dinner was a traditional South African braai, complete with chakalaka and potato salad. Dessert? Chef Philip’s famous lemon cheesecake was eaten slowly around the table as stars blinked to life outside.
Day Four: Full Circle
Our final walk was a 7km route back to Tierhoek, where we had started. The proteas were blooming, and the path curved along the Vlei one last time. It was a quiet morning, and many of us walked in pairs or alone, lost in thought. There’s something about walking through a place this untouched it simplifies things. It reminds you of the bigger picture.
Right: Beautiful views from the luxurious De Mond Villa.
Down: Room at De Mond Villa.
Below:
Our delicious breakfast at Melkkamer.

The trail gave us space for laughter, for reflection, and for chocolate cake still warm from the oven.

Why you should do it
We ended our journey with a visit to The Origins of Early Southern Sapiens Behaviour Exhibition, which showcases the archaeological importance of this region. Seeing ancient ostrich-shell water containers and stone tools just hours after walking the same coastline their makers once did gave me goosebumps. This isn’t just a nature reserve. It’s a thread that connects past and present, humans and wild places. ●
The De Hoop: Vlei to Whales Trail is more than a hike; it’s a reminder that nature heals, that shared experiences matter, and that we’re all a little more resilient than we think. Whether you go with friends, family or even solo, this is a journey that changes you. You don’t have to be super fit (just reasonably so), and the trail is designed for comfort. Accommodation at De Mond Villa or Melkkamer Manor is luxurious, all meals are included (and exceptional), and each day is guided by De Hoop Collection's professionals who know and love this land. By the end, we were sun-kissed, recharged and already planning our return.

EXPERIENCING HEALING THERAPIES AND LUXURY TREATMENTS AT STEENBERG SPA, A PLACE WHERE STRESS UNRAVELS SLOWLY, WHERE NATURE SOOTHES THE SENSES AND WHERE LUXURY TREATMENTS BECOME SOMETHING DEEPER, A RETURN TO SELF.
By Anje Hill

Set in the vine-draped folds of the Constantia Valley, Steenberg Spa offers something rare and necessary: a place to pause. Though only 20 minutes from Cape Town’s bustling centre, Steenberg Farm feels a world apart. Home to the Cape’s first farm (established in 1682), this 5-star estate is a celebration of elegance, heritage and considered living. Framed by ancient oaks, manicured gardens and mountain views, the grounds hold two exceptional restaurants, award-winning wine tastings, and, of course, the renowned Steenberg Spa, the estate’s soul-soothing centrepiece.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Monique and her expert team and began our day of wellness with freshly brewed herbal tea and a selection of wholesome bites in the calming reception area. The soft scent of essential oils filled the air, while textures of linen, wood and stone set the tone for the luxurious, earthy experience that lay ahead.
Our chosen treatment was the QMS Activator Facial and it’s not an exaggeration to say it was one of the best facial therapies we’ve ever received. Administered with precision and care by the Steenberg ladies, the facial uses advanced activation techniques to enhance the delivery of active ingredients. Our skin was left visibly firmer, fresher and glowing, a genuine transformation after just 60 minutes. Designed to revitalise tired, stressed skin, it delivers intense hydration, smoothness and instant radiance. The results were both immediate and deeply satisfying.
Next, we moved on to the Thermal Suite Experience, inspired by the invigorating traditions of Scandinavian wellness. Here, the contrast between heat and cold is used to awaken vitality, encourage circulation and recharge both body and mind. We eased into the sauna’s dry heat, which soothed muscles and encouraged detoxification, before stepping into the brisk cascade of the Nordic ice-bucket shower, a refreshing, heart-pounding burst of clarity. For the brave, there’s also an ice bath, perfect for reducing inflammation and energising the entire body.
Whether enjoyed as a standalone experience or as a prelude to other treatments, the Thermal Suite is transformative, a ritual

It’s not just a facial, it’s a transformation. Our skin was glowing, hydrated and visibly renewed.

that reconnects you to your senses in the most invigorating way.
What sets Steenberg Spa apart is not only its impressive treatment menu, massages, body wraps, scrubs, manicures and pedicures, using premium brands such as ilā, QMS, Margaret Dabbs and Bellabaci, but also the beautiful diversity of its setting. Treatments can take place in the serene interiors, but during warmer months, guests are encouraged to opt for an outdoor experience in the Scented Garden, a secluded space shaded by trees and surrounded by fragrant blooms. This enchanted escape adds a magical dimension to any massage or facial, turning it into a truly sensory immersion.
There are also special packages for couples, small groups, and even younger guests, with tailored offerings for tweens and teens, a thoughtful touch that adds to the Spa’s reputation for holistic care.
For those seeking extended indulgence, treatments exceeding R2000 include access to the Pool House. Here, you can bask in the sun on soft loungers, enjoy a heated dip, or sip on a signature cocktail by Tryn, Steenberg’s contemporary

restaurant. The peaceful sound of water, birdsong and rustling leaves completes the picture of effortless relaxation.
Beyond the Spa, the full beauty of Steenberg Farm awaits. From its boutique hotel, lovingly restored Manor House, and 18-hole golf course, to two distinct dining destinations, there are endless reasons to extend your stay or to return.
But it is the Spa that lingers. With its thoughtful blend of modern luxury and natural healing, Steenberg Spa offers more than just pampering. It offers a kind of quiet recalibration, a moment of deep rest and the gentle reminder that caring for ourselves isn’t indulgent, it’s essential.
Because sometimes the most powerful act of selfcare is to simply stop and let a place like Steenberg Spa hold you. ● READY TO RESET?
