Editor’s letter No amount of preparation can make grief any less significant and the finality of death can feel unbelievable, particularly when it strikes your nearest.

My Mom-in-law left us in summer, just before autumn started and thus, she missed winter, but she left for a life where she will forever have spring and summer, never experiencing any pain, hardship or loss of anything.

She lived an extraordinary life. She met the love of her life in the ‘80s and would’ve celebrated 31 years of marriage this year.

She was Mom to four naughty boys and was blessed with 6 grandchildren who she loved dearly. She was strong, loving and passionate, always caring and giving to the less fortunate.

She had a love for nature and wildlife, which she passed on to all of us and was also the only person that I ever met that could wear leopard print and always pull it off.

The pain of losing her has been so complex, the loss of her support, guidance and love, leaves an emptiness and pain that feels impossible to heal to all who knew her or met her along the way. We’ve cried and will cry some more but we find comfort in knowing that she lives on in all the beautiful memories she left us.

Absolute Mama would like to dedicate this issue to all those fighting cancer and to those we have lost.

s they gain more traction – after all, our skin is the body’s largest organ and its health is imperative – non-invasive skin procedures, particularly antiagers, mean a plethora of preventative and restorative treatments. Why the soaring popularity? High patient satisfaction;

think instant results with no downtime and far less discomfort than surgery.

And even if you do opt for a treatment like a chemical peel or micro-needling, the skin’s reaction means a day or two at home – and healing isn’t a lengthy process. So what’s the buzz?

Here are five non-surgical facial anti-agers for the face and body to help lift, sculpt and shape your skin beautifully.

ONE: THE COCKTAIL PEEL

Think transformation comes from knives, needles and surgical threads alone? Just by cocktailing (or layering) the right acids in the form of chemical peels, you’re able “to stimulate more advanced cellular renewal and collagen contraction,” explains Dr Judey, a biomedical scientist and CEO of Biomedical Emporium. In other words”. You expose your skin to different ingredients at extremely high concentrations at once,” she adds; but this isn’t for first-timers as it may be too intense for the skin to handle.

It’s All About the Blend To lift, sculpt and shape skin, Dr Judey recommends a cocktail peel with AHA’s and BHA’s (Alpha-hydroxy Acid and Beta Hydroxy Acid). In other words, a treatment with Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid. “Mixing the aforementioned with Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) just takes it to another level,” she reports. And for best

results, aim for a cocktail or layered peel every five to six weeks.

Top Tip: Dr Judey also waxes lyrical about the power of micro-needling.

“It’s an absolute must to combine with layered peels especially with the use of hyaluronic acid. This treatment densifies skin texture and improves elasticity profoundly,” she says.

TWO: THE MICRO-NEEDLING PROFESSIONAL PEN

While we’ve come a long way since radical procedures where only scalpels reigned supreme, minuscule needles in your anti-ageing treatment (hello micro-needling!) mean the creation of microchannels in the skin.

This a good thing! “This perceived trauma causes the release of growth factors that stimulate the production and formation of collagen and elastin,” says somatologist Cynthia Dold of Cynthia’s Skin Wellness. “This is known

as Collagen Induction Therapy,” she adds, “resulting in tightening, lifting and rejuvenation of the skin.”

Red in the Face After your session, be prepared to go home (you may not feel entirely comfortable to go out in public). However, downtime is minimal, explains Cynthia and you’ll see the full healing benefits (in up to three months) over time. “Skin cell turnover is increased; this leaves the skin firmer, improves skin elasticity, restores skin volume and leaves the skin more youthful.” Other advantages include reduction of pigmentation, enlarged pores and acne scarring, she adds.

Top Tip: Don’t feel despondent that there isn’t instant gratification with micro-needling. The initial healing response leaves the skin plumper, contributes immediately to reduce visible signs of ageing by smoothing lines and wrinkles and rejuvenating

other treatment modalities such as Radiofrequency, Nd:YAG skin tightening laser and Titan laser.

FOUR: THE TOP-TO-TOE LASER SKIN TIGHTENER

the skin, explains Cynthia. Also, think of it as a process. “When completed regularly, it’s a cost-effective antiageing treatment that yields both immediate and long term results,” she reports. Bank on a course of six treatments, and for optimal results, you’ll need to have a session every four to six weeks dependent on skin conditions and desired results.

THREE: THE HIGH-TECH

FACIAL

Fans of facials may still love the traditional “steam-and-cream,” – until they meet its bigger, more powerful, tech-inspired sister, the HydraTouch facial from Skin Renewal. “The HydraTouch Facial is an excellent ‘step-up’ treatment, if you have been doing facials for years, but want that extra effect,” explains Dr Maureen Allem, founder and medical director of the Renewal Institute, a general practitioner with a special interest in

aesthetic procedures as well as integrative and anti-ageing medicine.

The main purpose of the treatment is to gently exfoliate dead skin cells (increased cellular turnover), giving you a smooth texture, she says.

Tools of the Trade The treatment then also combines two other modalities; electrophoresis (“whereby we infuse the skin with Hyaluronic acid to increase hydration levels”) and Faradic. “Faradic works on muscle contraction and stimulation in the facial area: think of it as going to the gym and strengthening your body muscles - this will have a similar effect on the facial muscles,” says Dr Maureen.

Top Tip: It’s all about prevention over cure. “Its best suited for preventing sagging and lax skin, rather than treating it.” If severe lax or loose skin is your issue, Dr Maureen suggests combining a HydraTouch facial with

The presence of healthy collagen in the dermis helps maintain the skin’s youthful resilience and texture.”

Full Body Need a full whammy, time-saving procedure? As this treatment is especially good for lifting and tightening, opt for it if you’re struggling with a postpartum tummy.

Adolescent Sleep We can all remember the struggle to wake up in the morning as a teenager; it was just so difficult to get out of bed!

You might be surprised to hear that there is a scientific explanation for it after all.

e far underestimate the importance of sleep and at some point, it has become commonplace to consider those who sleep in or go to bed early, to be lazy and not as productive as someone who is waking up early and keeps going until late into the night. Sleeping is far from laziness and research has proven that consistently getting the right amount of sleep is very beneficial to our mental and physical health and will make us more productive. Getting enough

sleep leads to: improved brain development, better memory and better-regulated emotions – meaning less stress and more energy. It also has vast physical benefits such as an improved immune system.

WHY DOESN’T MY TEEN WANT TO WAKE UP?

In the case of adolescents, it seems like all they want to do is stay up late and stay asleep long after everyone else has woken up, but scientifically their brains are just not wired for early rising at this stage in their lives.

Research has shown that around puberty, adolescents experience a variety of developmental alterations from changes in the brain to different patterns in metabolism and most noticeably, a delay in their circadian rhythm or internal clock that is partly caused by a shift in the release of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin starts to be released at around 2-3 hours later than the average for adults or younger children – meaning that teens are only starting to feel sleepy much later than they did before as children. This makes it very difficult to be able to go to sleep at bedtime, leaving enough time to sleep for the recommended 9 hours before waking up again in time for school.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS NO JOKE

Adolescence is a period of dramatic brain development, particularly in the parts of the brain that are responsible for those higher-order thinking processes such as reasoning, problem-solving and good judgment.

Not getting enough sleep generally means that teenagers are not getting the type of sleep associated with learning, memory consolidation, and emotional processing. This could lead to reduced concentration in class and poor school performance.

Research shows that roughly 1 out of every 10 teenagers is getting the 8-10 hours of sleep per night recommended by sleep scientists and paediatricians. So, it is not

surprising that teenagers are known to be moody and irritable, apart from all of the other changes they are dealing with, they are also not getting enough sleep!

Dr. Lara Smith (MBChB, DCH, FCP), a Paediatrician at Copperfield Childcare Practice in Cape Town explains that “Teenage behaviour is more complex than just a result of sleep deprivation, due to all the biological changes that occur, but lack of sleep will certainly impact and aggravate some of these behaviours.”

WHAT CAN TEENS DO TO IMPROVE THEIR SLEEP ROUTINE?

Some lifestyle changes could help with sleep problems:

Try to stick to a routine Try to set a sleep schedule by going to bed at the same time every day.

This helps the body’s natural clock to become accustomed to the preferred time to go to sleep. “Try to limit any daytime naps to a maximum 20min”, says Dr. Smith, “and partaking in healthy extracurricular activities will also certainly help”.

Cut down the late-night technology Light exposure from mobile devices and TVs could disrupt circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep. Dr. Smith recommends limiting screen exposure from at least 1 hour before bedtime. It is also advisable not to have any screens in the bedroom.

Cut down on caffeine at night Caffeine not only affects the amount

of sleep you have but also the quality of sleep. Caffeine can stay in your system for up to 12 hours, so the best way to avoid it disrupting sleep is to cut down on any caffeine intake from lunchtime onwards.

So, there you have it - teens do have a scientific reason for wanting to sleep in, but the good news for their parents, they should grow out of it eventually.

Perceptual skills can be broken down into two main groups: auditory and visual perception. The development of these skills require the brain to break down information it receives from the ear or eye. It is not the physical ability to hear or see, but rather how what is heard or seen is interpreted by the brain. The ability of the brain to correctly interpret this information is crucial for learning to take place. “Children learn and develop by what they hear and what they see. Enhancing the development of these skills at an early stage can only set them up to succeed later in learning skills like maths and reading, where these developmental skills are essential”, writes Mrs Raeesa Bulbulia - BscOT (Wits).

Perhaps your parents expected you to become a doctor, like your mom; or, maybe you showed promise as a dancer, and can’t understand why they didn’t nurture and encourage your talent.

Was there unreasonable pressure to perform academically or socially?

HOW MUCH PRESSURE IS TOO MUCH?

Some children thrive on pressure.

Others crumble beneath it. You must consider your children’s personality.

What are their interests and strengths? Pushing a bookworm who hates sport into a rugby club to introduce them to team dynamics is probably not the best idea. A book club might be more appealing, while still ticking off some of the lessons you hope they will learn.

Inspect your motivation for nudging your children in a specific direction.

Do we want them to achieve this for their benefit, or is it something we want for ourselves? If the answer is the latter, perhaps you need to let it go.

Candice Warner, Child and Family Therapist and Mediator at The Care and Contact Centre in Cape Town, says that parents should be aware of signs that they might be applying too much pressure. Candice explains: “Children who are pushed too hard may become defiant and oppositional toward the parent, school, or society at large.” At the same time, she says: “Children who are not pushed enough might be at risk of feeling as though their parent does not care. This can impact on self-confidence, making it hard for these children to overcome tough obstacles later in life.”

Encouraging children to do things that challenge them will teach determination and broaden their perspective. The Care and Contact Centre encourages connection and attachment. “When parents are effectively connected to the child, they are in a prime position to enforce discipline and set boundaries.”

“Listen to your children without feeling the need to respond. Help them build realistic expectations and set goals to give them a sense of autonomy.”

Being able to tolerate healthy levels of discomfort is an important trait. Encouraging children to try something more than once, even if it wasn’t their greatest hit will allow them to practise perseverance.

Something that they initially thought was horrible, might grow into something they enjoy. Just remember to keep listening. Children might be averse to something because it’s not their thing, or as a result of bullying or depression.

SHIFTING THE FOCUS

Candice reminds us, ‘When you see your child pushing back, refocus the relationship. It’s about connection, not correction. Instead of telling a child, you’re proud of him or her, you might instead suggest. “You must be so proud of yourself!’ This minimizes the expectation that the child should live up to the parent’s standards, and instead focuses on what makes him or her feel accomplished.”

The important thing to remember is that your children need you to be their parent. What is needed isn’t a light touch, but the right touch. Being actively present from the start allows you to raise children who are capable of self-discipline and self-discovery.

When demands for achievement interfere with the parent-child relationship, sit back and remember that you are not the coach. Rather, you are the mentor.

Made up of organs and glands, it is a complex network throughout the body. Your endocrine system makes hormones that control everything from your mood to your metabolism. It controls how your hormones are released and sends the hormones into your bloodstream to travel to other body parts.

REFLECTING ON THE HEALTH OF YOUR ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Because the glands and organs that make up your endocrine system are so far-reaching, how do you know when it’s not working optimally? If your endocrine system isn’t healthy, you might have fertility issues, struggle with stress, gain weight quickly or be low on energy. That’s because high levels of sugar stay in your blood instead of moving into your cells.

id you know that 90 percent of our happy hormone – serotonin – is produced in the gut? Bernice Venter, registered dietitian and practitioner at Geneway and Optiway explains this and adds that if you’re struggling with GUT health, “you will most likely feel anxious too as there isn’t enough happy hormone being produced.” She unpacks it like this: “We also have something called the GUT-brain connection.” This means we need a good working GUT and some nutrients like Vitamin D and Omega-3 to help with the binding of serotonin from the GUT to the brain, she says.

“Think about when you’re nervous or stressed, does it affect your stomach? That is your GUT brain connection.” So while you may feel you’re the only one suffering, not only from heightened stress and anxiety but stomach issues too, you’re really not alone. “A lot of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) patients experience anxiety issues, which then, in turn,

Eating consciously yet broadly is the right mindset: “don’t just blanket eliminate a food from your diet because you believe it could be an irritant,” cautions Kim. “Gluten is a common one that people eliminate unnecessarily.” What she does warn against – after identifying what is irritating you – are frequent irritants like food additives, preservatives, gluten (if it’s the issue), artificial sweeteners, certain sugars and yeast.

“To figure out food-specific sensitivities, keep a detailed log of what you eat and any symptoms you experience,” she suggests. “When larger food groups need to be eliminated make sure that you do it with a registered dietician who can ensure that your diet stays balanced.”

LIVING THE LIFESTYLE Managing good GUT health and anxiety means more than just nutrition. Kim recommends supplementing with probiotics and including guar gum and peppermint oil to help soothe and calm the GUT. The latter can cause reflux, she explains, so watch your reaction.

Island Salad

Grilled Nectarines and Coconut Serves: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

2 teaspoons coconut oil 1 cup uncooked quinoa (preferably red)

Sweet is without a doubt one of the yummiest flavours and when contrasted with dark leafy greens. It can seem bitter and inedible; however, this is only true when it comes to refined sugars which plague so many people’s day-to-day diets. Mixing different tastes such as sweet and bitter is the way in which you can achieve real flavour. It’s this contrast that makes a dish stand out. In this recipe, for example, I combine natural sugar from a fruit with the bitter greens which complements them beautifully and makes them incredibly enjoyable. So, if bitter greens aren’t something you would typically eat, I encourage you to try this salad and experience how the flavours enhance each other.

4 cups boiling water Salt and pepper ½ cup edamame beans, shelled 2 nectarines, halved and pips removed Olive oil ¼ cup coconut flakes 50 grams raw macadamia nuts 2 handfuls baby spinach 1 avocado, peeled, pip removed, cubed Dressing Zest and juice of 2 limes 5 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon honey ½ teaspoon red chilli flakes (optional) 1 small handful fresh mint leaves, finely chopped Salt and pepper

method

Heat the coconut oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat. Add the quinoa and stir, allowing the quinoa to toast for roughly 2 minutes. Add 2 cups of the boiling water and a good crack of salt and bring to a simmer for 15–20 minutes. As the last of the water is absorbed in the saucepan, switch off the heat and cover with a lid, allowing the quinoa to steam for 5 minutes. Once steamed, remove the lid and spread out the quinoa on a baking tray, allowing it to cool.

Mix all the ingredients for the salad dressing together in a small bowl and season to taste. Set aside.

Place the shelled edamame beans in another small bowl and cover with the remaining 2 cups of boiling water. Blanch for 5 minutes and then rinse with cold water, drain and set aside.

Slice the nectarines into crescent shapes about 5 mm thick. Drizzle lightly with olive oil.

Heat a griddle pan over medium to high heat, then add the nectarines to the hot pan. Grill for 4–5 minutes on each side until grill marks appear. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Toast the coconut flakes in a small frying pan for 5 minutes until golden brown. Keep an eye on them so that they don’t burn; meanwhile, roughly chop the macadamia nuts.

Spread the spinach leaves over a medium-sized serving platter. Cover the spinach with the cooled quinoa and add the edamame beans. Top the salad with the avocado, nectarine slices, toasted coconut and macadamia nuts. Drizzle the dressing generously over the salad and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Roasted Baby Sprouts and Brussels Sprouts Serves: 5 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 50 minutes

Ingredients

500 grams baby potatoes, scrubbed Salt and pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra 1 teaspoon paprika 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary leaves 200 grams brussels sprouts 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil 50 grams sunflower seeds, toasted (optional) 1 handful rocket Juice of ½ lemon Hummus 250 grams chickpeas, cooked 2 medium-sized beetroots, washed, quartered and roasted or boiled 2 tablespoons tahini 8 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon ground turmeric ½ teaspoon ground cumin 1 clove garlic Juice of 1 lemon Salt and pepper

Making healthy eating easy is key. You do not want to spend two hours creating a perfect dish if you are starving and have not eaten the whole day. You also can’t expect yourself to make healthier choices in those moments. This recipe ticks all the right boxes as it is easy and can form part of meal prep for the week ahead too.

method

Preheat the oven to 180 °C. For the hummus, blend all the ingredients together. Add a little more olive oil if the blender gets stuck. Adjust seasoning if necessary and set aside.

Place the potatoes in a medium-sized saucepan of boiling water with a bit of salt. Boil for 10 minutes or until they are soft when pierced with a fork. Once ready, drain and let them cool on a roasting tray.

Gently squash the potatoes using the back of a fork. Drizzle with the olive oil and sprinkle with the paprika and rosemary. Season with salt and pepper.

Place the Brussels sprouts and melted coconut oil in a bowl. Toss until the sprouts are evenly coated. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer them to the roasting tray with the potatoes.

Pop the veggies into the oven and roast for 40 minutes. Toss the Brussels sprouts at the halfway mark and check on the potatoes. Once golden brown, add a drizzle of olive oil and return to the oven for an additional 10 minutes or until you have golden brown and crunchy potatoes with soft Brussels sprouts.

Once ready, remove from the oven.

Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle half the sunflower seeds (if using) over the dip and top with rocket or baby beetroot leaves. Arrange the potatoes and Brussels sprouts on a serving platter and sprinkle with the remaining sunflower seeds (if using) and a lashing of lemon juice. Serve with the hummus on the side.

1 tablespoon coconut oil 250 grams Tofu, cubed Broth 4 cups vegetable stock 2 sheets Nori, finely sliced 1 bunch Swiss chard, stalks removed and leaves roughly chopped ¼ cup finely sliced spring onion 1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, peeled and cut into matchsticks 1 cup Shimeji mushrooms 250 grams Pak Choi Sesame oil 250 grams buckwheat noodles Olive oil 1 teaspoon liquid aminos Miso paste 120 grams raw walnuts, roasted ¼ cup brown rice miso paste 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar

Time is the one thing we seem to lack and our first excuse for not achieving our goals.

This recipe is quick and easy to make, and incredibly good for the microbiome. Miso is a fermented food, which means it is great for gut health and adds a beautiful depth of flavour to a quick and easy broth. Having good gut health not only ensures that we don’t have an array of digestive issues, but can also assist us with mental health issues. Healing one’s gut means happier moods. Time management aids us in combating stress and supports healthy habits.

For the tofu, heat the coconut oil in a medium-sized frying pan over medium heat. Add the tofu cubes and fry for 5 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Once ready, remove from the heat, drain on paper towel and set aside.

Now let’s get the broth started. Place the vegetable stock, nori, Swiss chard, spring onion and ginger into a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes, then switch off the heat. Add the mushrooms and pak choi and stir through. Keep the lid on to retain the heat.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles as per the packet instructions. Once ready, drizzle with olive oil to stop them from sticking together and then set aside.

For the miso paste, place the walnuts into a food processor and blend. Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.

Serve the broth with the noodles, crispy tofu and a big dollop of miso paste stirred in. Drizzle over some sesame oil and the liquid aminos for that extra salty kick.

Here is a fun fact. For every delicious meal you have had that is unhealthy, there is an equally tasty yet healthy equivalent. Yes, that means you can have your cake and eat it. All you have to do is put in the effort to make it a cake that is healthy, with less sugar and fewer refined processed ingredients. I used to think that I would never be able to indulge if I wanted to be healthy. The fact is, it’s the opposite. Indulgence can be part of healthy, balanced living.

The different elements of this recipe need time to set in the fridge, so making it the day before is recommended. Take note that the whip will only work if you have chilled your coconut cream in the can. Do not shake the can before use and make sure it is well chilled. You are only going to use the solid part that separates from the liquid in the can and rises to the top.

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Crust 5 Medjool dates, pitted 1 cup rolled oats ½ cup desiccated coconut ½ cup raw almonds ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup maple syrup ¼ cup melted coconut oil 2 teaspoons lemon juice Zest of ½ Lemon Caramel 20 large Medjool dates, pitted and soaked in warm water for 15 minutes then drained Pinch of salt 3 tablespoons smooth almond butter 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons vanilla paste Whip ½ cup coconut cream solid, chilled in the fridge overnight or for at least 4 hours 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or Xylitol if you want the cream to stay white) ¼ teaspoon Agar Agar powder

Preheat the oven to 180 °C. For the crust, place the dates in a high-speed food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Add the oats, coconut and almonds and blend until it forms a fine crumb. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until well combined.

Gently press the crust into a 20 cm pie pan or individual tart bases, preferably with a removable base. Pop the pie pan into the oven and bake for 10–15 minutes until golden brown. Once ready, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.

For the caramel, place all the ingredients into a high-speed food processor or blender and blend until smooth. If the mixture gets stuck, add 1 tablespoon hot water. Once smooth, refrigerate for at least 10 minutes.

For the whip, place the solid coconut cream into a stand mixer with the whisk attachment and whisk on high speed. Once stiff peaks start to form, add the remaining ingredients and whisk until well combined. Cover the bowl and pop it into the fridge for 20 minutes.

Once all the elements are chilled you can assemble the pie. Start by spooning the caramel on to the crust base. Spread it to create an even layer, and then top it with the banana slices (dust with cinnamon or grated chocolate, if you like).

Top with lashings of the whip and sprinkle over the grated chocolate and a dusting of cinnamon.

Pop it back into the fridge to set for a minimum of 2 hours, then serve.

The park provides sanctuary to Klipspringer (Quiver trees), porcupines, leopards, baboons, vervet monkeys and much more. One

of the many highlights of the area includes the 26 km long Klipspringer Hiking Trail through the gorge. It takes three days to complete this with overnight accommodation.

KHAMKIRRI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

Khamkirri is the Nama word for “Place of the Leopard.” It is a 7500-hectare ranch built on the bank of the Orange River in the Augrabies region that is home to the leopard and other wildlife species. msterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands. The city has over 160 canals which form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and because of this, it’s been nicknamed ‘Venice of the North’. The city (and country) is well known for its delicious cheese production, Anne Frank, the Red Light District, the traditional Dutch wooden shoes known as clogs, windmills and tulips; and so much more.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

First do some research and apply for a Schengen visa. You cannot visit it, unless you carry an EU passport.

The largest airport in the Netherlands is Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. It’s a world-class, well-oiled machine, and once you arrive, you’ll easily be able to direct yourself from within to your destination. Amsterdam is well routed with public transport, including trams, buses and overland and underground metro trains.

The weather is welcoming regardless of the time of year. Summer temperatures (June to August) hover around 22°C, and winter temperatures

The Herengracht is one of the four main canals in the city centre, and as

A canal cruise is next on the cards and is considered an absolute must-do activity. There are day and night cruises, short and extended cruises dependent on your schedule.

The Pannenkoekenboot (Pancake Boat) is a fun 75-minute boat trip on the IJ river with an unlimited Dutch pancake buffet.

In winter, the canals can sometimes freeze over and, you guessed it, transform into extended ice rinks ideal for an afternoon of ice skating.

flavour combination for pannenkoeken is bacon and sugar syrup.

Oliebollen are deep-fried balls of dough similar to doughnuts that often include raisins or currants in the batter. They’re usually served steaming hot, dusted with powdered sugar.

Speculaas is a firm favourite all over the Netherlands. It’s a spiced shortbread type of biscuit, very moreish. For something a bit more savoury, my personal favourite is the Kroketten. It is a croquette made from bechamel sauce mixed with a meat or vegetarian filling, then breaded and deep-fried. Who’s counting calories on holiday, right?

FUN FACTS • There are more bicycles in Amsterdam that there are residents. Roughly around 900 000 bicycles! Residents and cyclists cover approximately two million kilometres a day.

fter every monster in the Beast Quest books had been defeated and every Waldo found, it was time for school to begin. Huzzah!

From now on, they would be someone else’s problem. Double Huzzah! It was like a dream come true. I would finally have my house, my office, and my sanity back where it belonged. I felt sorry for my youngest as Grade R had been a washout, and Grade 1 was hardly going to be the soft and sentimental entry into ‘Big School’ it was supposed to be. It was more like a quick drop-and-roll out of a moving car, followed by the obligatory photograph and a hastily shouted “Love you! See you later!” before speeding home to enjoy the silence.

The look on his face, though, as he put on a tie for the first time just said it all. “ It’s like putting a collar on a wild animal,” he said, in all his six-year-old fury, with his tiny fist raised to the sky, wanting to know why. He has a point, though, and now that I had seen it, I could not unsee it.

Then we were driving somewhere a while ago, and the eldest asks,” Why does the KFC dude have such a tiny body for such a large head?” I immediately wanted to tell him, no, that it is actually a bowtie he is wearing, but alas! my son did the damage, and all I ever see is a gigantic head on a tiny body. My kids aren’t the only ones, though; my wife does it too.

But alas, the location of said seller of now wholly imagined goods remained a mystery. Until one day, it wasn’t, and she returned home looking rather bashful. “I’ve figured it out,” she said, unable to look me in the eye. “ It’s not

But for now, until the end of time, it will always be Entranceto.

Usually, things of this nature take place at home around family members, as I dislike showing the world how ‘dof’ we can sometimes be.

A recent trip to the dentist put paid to that when she asked my 8-year old, “ Do you floss?” and the fruit of my loins starts busting a move in the dentist’s chair, saying,” What, the dance?” We all laughed at that until I saw the bill and made sure that he knew how to floss for real this time.

I don’t know what the little dude has about chicken, but the last one made me chuckle. Since the universe conspired against us taking a holiday last year, I thought I’d expose them to the world via the Travel Channel. So far, so good. We were learning about Egypt’s pyramids, the Eiffel Tower and all manner of exciting things abroad.
