EXCLAMATION POINTS! THE INSIDE SCOOP STRAIGHT FROM THE TOP Publisher, PATTI PARISH-KAMINSKI

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high.” – George Gerschwin In my opinion, Gerschwin got it right with his lyrics to Summertime, as they embody the true spirit of summer. Livin’ is a bit easier, and I, for one, am relieved to be finished with the hectic pace of the school year. Even though I don’t particularly enjoy the summer temperatures, I always welcome the more laid back pace of summer in Brazos. For many brides, however, June is the busiest Amy Mitchell and Patti Parish-Kaminski month of the year as it is often associated with at Fort Bend Junior Service League’s weddings. In this issue, we share the special Spring Fling 2015. days of three blushing brides and their beaus, and they are simply beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, read about Richmond’s Alexa Lake and her amazing horse Viper as this dynamic duo takes the rodeo world by storm. Both the sport – and the young lady – are beautiful to watch, and we wish them luck as they compete throughout the United States. This month, we celebrate not only our grads, but our dads as well. If you are looking for a great gift idea for either, check out Things We Love for Dads & Grads on page 24. And, Happy Graduation to all of our seniors, and a very Happy Father’s Day to all of our Brazos dads! Remember, summer is here – so take it easy!

Meet Kassidi Kaminski

F

ort Bend Christian Academy, the largest private school in Fort Bend, is strongly committed to Christian beliefs and principles and serves the entire Christian community. “It is the mission of Fort Bend Christian Academy to equip students to thrive spiritually, academically, socially and physically.” One senior who has achieved success in all aspects of her school life, academics and sports, and is a respected leader is Kassidi Kaminski. Kassidi is an exceptional student academically. She has taken honors classes all four years of high school and has achieved all A’s. She is a member of the Academic Team, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, Interact Club, Student Leadership Community, Spanish Club and the Big Sister Little Sister Club. She has been recognized by her teachers and peers with numerous awards, including the Soaring Eagle Award for three years, chosen by her teachers and based on Christian character, academic achievement, service and school involvement. Kassidi is also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and has been awarded Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor, Freshman Honors Biology Award, Sophomore Honors English Award and Junior Homecoming Princess. When asked what value Kassidi lives by, she replied, “To love others and to love Jesus. The most important things in this life are your relationship

Kassidi

with God and your relationships with people. If I don’t spend my time loving others the best I can and showing them the love of Christ, I’m not doing my job very well.” Kassidi is a talented athlete. For all four years of her high school career, she has been a member of the Varsity Cross Country team, Varsity Basketball team and Varsity Track team. When asked what is the one thing she will treasure the most about her high school experience, she said, “The camaraderie of my three sports’ teams. I’ve made lifelong friends through sports, and I’ve been blessed with some pretty amazing coaches over the years. Ninety percent of the best memories I have from high school all involve being with my teammates.” Kassidi was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award, Most Improved Runner Award, Most Improved Player Award in Basketball, and her team finished as the runner-up in the 2013 Texas Association for Private and Parochial Schools 4A Girls’ Basketball tournament. Her Cross Country team placed second in the AllDistrict meet. Kassidi enjoys facilitating her teammates to succeed. “It’s rewarding to help others become better at the sport you love. I want my teammates to know they can have someone trustworthy and reliable to talk to, to help them and to guide them.” Kassidi is a recognized leader at Fort

Bend Christian Academy. This year, she is President of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club Senior Class Representative, Student Council Class Representative, Varsity Track Co-Captain and Varsity Basketball Chaplain. Last year, she was the Vice President of the National Honor Society and Varsity Cross Country Co-Captain, and she was Junior Varsity Basketball Captain as a sophomore. She is the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Representative and a graduate of the Student Leadership University. Outside of her busy school schedule, Kassidi generously gives her time to help the less fortunate. Kassidi participated in mission trips to Cherokee North Carolina, Carolina Creek Christian Camp and New York to assist people in need, painting homes, babysitting, teaching and tutoring. She also volunteers at the Fort Bend Literacy Council and graduated as salutatorian of her class.

This fall, Kassidi will attend the Liberal Arts Honors College at the University of Texas at Austin to study Psychology in an effort to continue her commitment to public service. Congratulations on your enormous success Kassidi, and good luck as you continue down the path of distinction.

Alexa Lake and Viper Strike the Rodeo World

Viper with Alexa Lake

Alexa Lake, a 21 year-old from Richmond, may not be a previous National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier, but she’s giving last year’s barrel racing qualifiers a run for their money. After competing in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association for four years, things are starting to click. “A lot has changed, but I think the thing that has affected me the most is experience. You learn from experience and mistakes,” said Lake. With winnings of over $41,000 so far this year, Lake has placed at numerous rodeos in Texas. Nationally, she placed in Starkville, Mississippi and competed in the Champions Challenge in South Dakota. Lake has achieved her accomplishments aboard her brown gelding Sure Down Dash, also known as “Viper.” The two have become an incredible team. “He is my number one priority, always. None of this would even be imaginable if it wasn’t for Viper. I will go as far as he wants to,” Lake said. Lake has been riding horses since she was old enough to walk but didn’t compete in barrel racing until the age of nine. Her advice to anyone trying to excel in the pro rodeo world is, “Start somewhere, and work your way up. I stayed local a whole year until I had the confidence to compete at the level I am at now. You have to start somewhere!” The daughter of Phyllis Benefield of Richmond, Texas, Lake attended Foster High School in Richmond and Blinn College in Bryan-College Station.

Cross Creek Ranch Holds T-Shirt Fundraiser for Young Resident In April 2014, Greg and Misty Day discovered their 22 month-old son, Nolan, had non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a blood cancer that is uncommon in young children. Friend and neighbor support began almost immediately and still continues as Nolan approaches one year of scares, hospital procedures and chemotherapy treatments that – if all goes as planned – will continue until May 2016. The newest fundraiser is being conducted by the master-planned community of Cross Creek Ranch, where the Day family has lived since August 2013. The community is selling superhero T-shirts for $20 each, with all proceeds benefiting the Days. T-shirts can be purchased at the Cross Creek Ranch Welcome Center, located at 6450 Cross Creek Bend Lane. “We never know what the next day will bring,” Misty said. “We are doing daily chemotherapy treatments here at home and go every two weeks to Texas Children’s Hospital, where we were going every four days when he was first diagnosed. The support we have received has been humbling.” Misty said friends began leaving presents at her doorstep for Nolan and

Carson and Nolan Day older brother Carson almost immediately after Nolan’s diagnosis. Dinners were delivered nightly for four months, as the family spent considerable time driving back and forth to the hospital. Bouquets and pots of flowers were delivered but had to be left outside because of Nolan’s compromised immune system. Neighbor Tiffany Guarisco and a large group of neighbors organized a multifamily garage sale that was held during the Cross Creek Ranch’s rummage sale last spring, with all proceeds being donated to the Days. “There were so many items donated for the sale that they filled

an entire three-car garage,” Misty said. The sale raised just over $4,000 for the family. “I knew their medical bills were going to be astronomically high, and there were several of us who wanted to help,” Guarisco said. “The community’s semiannual garage sale was 10 days away, so we rallied families in a very short time and had a huge sale.” Misty said she didn’t expect the outpouring she has seen in Cross Creek Ranch and the greater Fulshear community. “I had just joined the Mom’s Club of Fulshear and had gone to three meetings before Nolan was diagnosed. When other members found out, they began donating items and offering to help right away. And the response in Cross Creek Ranch has been amazing. In my old neighborhood, we didn’t even know anyone. I love my neighbors here and am so thankful for them. We are never moving.” Nolan’s battle is continuing in treatment phases that involve chemotherapy, continuing hospital visits and procedures and physical therapy that will go on for at least another year. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Unveils New TrueBeam Linear Accelerator

CAMPBELL GARRETT DISTINCTIVE HOMES

Your Land. Our Expertise.

Technician Megan Hopkins with patient Diane Chambers.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has installed a new radiation therapy system that integrates imaging, beam delivery and motion management to give physicians unmatched control of radiation therapy. “This is a major step forward in cancer treatment,” said Clive Shkedy, MD, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology services at Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land. “The new system allows us to limit side effects and reduce the impact on surrounding tissue while improving the delivery of radiation. It actually gives us a 4-D image as we work – a threedimensional view of the tumor along with any movement – so that we can deliver radiation doses to a precise spot at the most opportune moment.” The TrueBeam system is ideal for treating tumors of the lung, abdomen, breast, prostate, head and neck. TrueBeam also allows for quicker treatment sessions and a more comfortable patient experience. The Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land is set up to conduct clinical trials using the new TrueBeam system and can electronically transfer data to trial organizers. “Our successful approach relies on our collaborative approach with patients,” said Dr. Shkedy. “The TrueBeam system gives our team another powerful tool that we can use to plan and deliver the best possible care.” Learn more about the cancer services at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital by joining the Cancer Center open house on Thursday, June 11th from 5 to 7 pm to see how the new TrueBeam technology works. To RSVP, call 281-275-0751 or email SLRSVP@houstonmethodist.org.

Squeals of laughter livened up Historic Downtown Rosenberg on April 11th as rail fans young and old enjoyed the sights and sounds of RailFest 2015 at the Rosenberg Railroad Museum. Thanks to the hard work of over 100 volunteers that day, the staff and the Nick, Stetson and Meghan Kaminski. Museum’s board of directors, the event was a tremendous success, bringing in close to 1,100 visitors, despite the sprinkling of rain throughout the day. The Houston Area “G” Gaugers were on hand running trains on the Garden Railroad, and the Houston “S” Gauge club entertained with their visiting layout. In addition, there were carnival games, a trackless train, balloon artist, circus train inflatable and hobo bindle craft for kids to enjoy. Live music from the Brazos River Pickers and DJ Chizz added to the fun, and guests enjoyed great food from local favorites Anna’s Gourmet Greek, M&M’s Southern Creole Kitchen and Trifles Gourmet Desserts. The Museum had the support of many community partners who made the event memorable: The Gingerbread Kids’ Academy, sponsors of RailFest’s Kids Area, plus Kevin Patton, State Farm Agent, the Ol’ Railroad Cafe, Daniel Slavinski, CPA, Calvary Episcopal Prep, the Hardee Investment Group, Bob’s Tacos, Ray’s Glass, The Loan Store, EP Compean Funeral Directors, Dick’s Automotive, Another Time Soda Fountain, Joe and Doris Gurecky, Vision Trends, BR Vino, Vogelsang’s Antique Emporium, Physical Therapy Care, Buena Visa Restaurant, Pier 36, Today’s Vision Sugar Land, Duran Roofing, Chick-fil-A, Greenscape, Hawkins Furniture, Alicia Casias Agency, Jeff McCllelan, CPA, Amegy Bank, Chris Bronsell, Billy Guerrero and BAC Photography. “The overwhelming support of the community that joined us on a day that had not so great weather was amazing. We are so thankful to our sponsors and volunteers, who continue to make RailFest so enjoyable for all of our visitors year after year,” said the Museum’s Executive Director Ratha Liladrie. “Rosenberg is such a great town with so much to offer. I’m thrilled so many people got to experience it firsthand at RailFest 2015, and we look forward to an even better event in 2016.”

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY

Projector buildings housed a profitable concession stand and restrooms a short walk from the car.

Drive-In Movie Theaters: An Icon of American Culture

A

nyone who was born in the 1940s remembers the good old days of the drive-in theater. Weekends were highly anticipated, and lines of automobiles came early to get the best parking spot. The car was a comfortable change from traditional movie theater seats. When the sun went down and darkness set in, the big screen lights captured the movie in a larger than life venue. Three large speakers were mounted near the screen, and snack bars offered abundant food for the whole family. Those were the days before high-tech surround sound and visual effects, but it didn’t matter. The drive-in movie was the place to be on a weekend night.

These speakers with adjustable volume were hung on the inside window of each car for sound quality at drive-in theaters.

Richard Hollingshead, a young entrepreneur from Camden, New Jersey, was a sales manager at his dad’s Whiz Auto Products. Hollingshead loved cars and movies and came up with the concept of open-air movies viewed from the comfort of an automobile. After experimenting in his own driveway, Hollingshead mounted a 1928 Kodak projector

to the hood of his car and placed a radio behind a sheet he used as a screen. He devised a plan for parking and tested ways to guard against inclement weather. On May 16, 1933, Hollingshead received a patent and opened Park-In Theaters, Inc. With an investment of $30,000, the first drive-in opened on June 6th. The price of admission was 25 cents per car and 25 cents per person. After World War II, drive-in theaters spread across the country. In-car speakers were designed to replace the large bullhorn speakers at the screen, allowing patrons in cars at the back of the site to hear the movie. By the late 1940s, many drive-ins added playgrounds and train rides to make the event more family friendly. Concession stands set up cafeteria-style food to feed a large crowd in the 10 minute intermission that featured cartoons and a clock that counted down the time until the second feature. By 1958, there were over 4,000 drive-in theaters in the United States. The appeal of the drivein theater was the casual and convenient alternative to an indoor, uncom-

fortable and costly movie theater. The first drive-in theater in Fort Bend was the Twin City Drive-In at Avenue H in Rosenberg. Opening in 1950, it was well-equipped with a large playground for the “kiddies,” and mosquitoes were controlled nightly. Mart Cole, owner of the famous Cole Theater in Rosenberg, Cole in Halletsville, The Lamar in Richmond, The Palms in Sugar Land, and The Grand and Sunset Drive-In in Yoakum, owned and opened the drive-in year round. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights, 70 cents would admit a whole carload of patrons. The snack bar invited guests to a delicious meal of hot dogs, hamburgers and fried chicken. Unfortunately, Twin City Drive-in closed in 1983, and the land was redeveloped. Today, there are less than 500 driveins operating in the country. So, what led to the demise of this wonderful concept of family entertainment? Some speculate that one reason was the introduction of daylight savings time. Parents didn’t want to bring their kids to a movie that did not start until 10 pm. In addition, movie operators switched the genre to adult or occult films, which lost family appeal. With the inception of cable television and VCRs in the 1970s and 80s, people stayed home to watch movies. However, drive-in theaters are making a comeback. A whole new generation is discovering the appeal of outdoor viewing. With innovative technology, the drive-in movies of tomorrow will help keep this American tradition alive.
