Strength in Genetic Diversity

Genetic diversity, an exciting base change, positive movements for key bloodlines, and future mating flexibility: these phrases all sum up ABS Global’s April 2025 Genetic Evaluation results. The outcome of this proof run strongly reinforces our long-standing strategic focus committed to genetic diversity and its positive impact long term. This Sire Summary was also met by U.S. and U.K. base changes as well as a formulation update to Net Merit (NM$), causing significant industry shifting. This article will breaks the day down into three areas: the actual base change, the importance of genetic diversity, and the performance of ABS sires

2025 BASE CHANGE

The April 2025 Genetic Evaluation reflected a base change for both the U.S. and U.K. A base change occurs in the U.S. every five years, while the U.K. base changes annually. As a reminder, a base change is a recalibration of the population back to zero to account for genetic progress that has been made. Think of a base change as a report card for genetic progress.

Earlier, we communicated the base change estimates, and we are happy to announce that the actual total PTAs were higher than anticipated. The tables below outline the total change for the U.S. Specifically, regarding the Net Merit formulation, a drop of 404 NM$ was estimated, but the actual change was 338 NM$.

The base change also impacts internal ABS evaluations, particularly the ABS Health Index (AHI) as three CDCB traits are incorporated into its calculation. Here’s the impact the base change had on AHI:

» For ABS-marketed Holstein sires (236 sires), the average AHI change decreases slightly by 0.68 points, with a high correlation of 98.22% when compared to their December 2025 AHI values.

» For all ABS sires (8,305 sires), the average AHI change is a minor decrease of 0.82 points, with an even stronger correlation of 99.19% to their December 2025 AHI values.

Overall, these changes suggest that the genomic improvements are having a positive impact on health, resulting in only a slight change in AHI and indicating ongoing progress in improving health traits.

Why Does the Diversity of Sires Used in Our Genetic Plan Matter?

» It minimizes the risk of any single sire re-ranking or dropping significantly.

» It maximizes pregnancy production by lessening fertility influences.

» It reduces the potential of uncovering hidden haplotypes.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GENETIC DIVERSITY

Some players across the industry have relied on genetics that dominate the ranks, which results in a few sires drastically influencing genetic plans. While this strategy could lead to generating the next high-ranking sire, it’s an approach that is more likely to increase the risk of future challenges for dairy producers that come with potential inbreeding. So, balancing both is imperative, which is why ABS strives to offer a diverse lineup with genetic superiority

What is genetic diversity? In simple terms, genetic diversity is the number of different bloodlines used within a customer’s herd or a genetics company’s breeding program. It is determined by the number of different sires, maternal grandsires, and maternal great grandsires of bulls used in a breeding program.

Today, it’s important to be aware of the genetic diversity in your genetic plan as well as your genetic supplier’s. The average dairy herd size is increasing, the shift to using genomic bulls over proven continues to grow, and genetic protection is changing the industry. Thus, the need to use a bigger team of different sires is becoming a necessity. Our focus on diversity puts us in a prime position to provide dairy producers with genetics that work in their specific operations and offer future mating flexibility. See the data in our article on page 8.

ABS DIFFERENTIATION THROUGH GENETIC DIVERSITY

Today, it’s important to be aware of the genetic diversity in your genetic plan as well as your genetic partner’s. The average dairy herd size is increasing, the shift to using genomic bulls over proven continues to grow, and genetic protection is changing the industry. Thus, the need to use a bigger team of different sires is necessary. Our focus on diversity puts ABS in a prime position to provide you with genetics that work in your operation and offer future mating flexibility.

Over the years, several industry trends have presented challenges to maintaining genetic diversity, such as:

» More germplasm protection

» Fewer breeder herds

» Higher IVF and fl ushing costs

» Increased use of genomics and selection intensity

To combat the effect of these trends, ABS maintains a strong genetic nucleus. Investing in the purchase of high-ranking females or IVF sessions guarantees our ability to create and offer diverse genetics. Our full acquisition of De Novo and other partnerships gives us access to a wide range of bloodlines, high-ranking females, and desired IVF sessions, showcasing our efforts to diversify.

OUR DIVERSITY COMPARED TO OTHERS

Genetic diversity is an area of great strength for us. We have stayed true to maintaining diversity within our bloodlines, instead of creating many bulls from one individual sire in hopes of producing the next high-ranking bull. You can see that commitment in the following graphs.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR CRITERIA USERS TO BE AWARE OF A BASE CHANGE?

» For customers with a milk market more focused on protein, this update in Net Merit $ could have you selecting animals that don’t help you meet your goals. Using a tool like Cheese Merit or a Custom Index might be a better alternative for your genetic selection. 5 6 7 8

» Because of the base change, it will be critical that producers selecting based on criteria adjust their data. Why? With the changes in some traits, not updating could result in not enough of the best bulls populating for selection. For producers utilizing U.S. data and proofs, this base change will greatly impact dairies using criteria for their genetic selection.

HOW MUCH SHOULD CRITERIA USERS ADJUST THEIR CRITERIA BY?

» When adjusting your criteria, we suggest aligning your thresholds with the base change. For example, if you were selecting for a +1000 lbs. Milk bull based on the U.S. genetic evaluation before the base change, you can now select a bull that is +250 lbs. for Milk after and still get the same genetic value.

HOW DOES A CUSTOM INDEX OR OTHER INDUSTRY INDEX MINIMIZE THE EFFECT OF A BASE CHANGE?

» The design of an index helps minimize the effect of a base change because it is not based on specifi c criteria and accounts for the change automatically. A bull’s rank will not change on an index, and customers will end up with more profi table genetics.

» Also, it has been proven that genetic selection based on an index leads to fast genetic progress as compared to criteria selection.

WHAT DOES THE FORMULATION CHANGE FOR NET MERIT $ LOOK LIKE?

» NM$ is estimated to drop around 450 points and will be three digits once again and start with six, seven, or eight.

» There were no new traits added, but several updates to traits already included have been made. The new formulation includes:

• Increase weight on Milk and Fat

• Decrease in Protein

• More emphasis on lower cow weight, impacting Body Weight Composite

• Less total weight on Fertility traits like Daughter Pregnancy Rate

• Increased emphasis on Cow Conception Rate

THE POWER OF POLLED

Horned cattle are more prevalent in the global dairy population because few producers are choosing to select genetics for polled cattle. Genetic selection for production, health, and conformation traits have historically trumped the selection of polled genetics. It was kind of one or the other—but not anymore!

Times are changing as the desire to create polled cattle increases. Public awareness of dehorning practices is a main driver in recent polled genetic selections. Naturally hornless cattle appeal to off-farm consumers from an animal welfare perspective, but as a producer, eliminating dehorning promotes calf welfare, reduces management practices, and increases safety for those working on dairies

POLLED: THE DOMINANT GENE

Most do not realize the polled gene is dominant. In simple terms, animals with one copy of the polled gene and one copy of the horned gene will not have horns. The illustration below demonstrates the breeding outcomes of using homozygous or heterozygous polled bulls. It is important to note that if you are working towards a polled herd, you can use a heterozygous polled (Pp) sire with 50% of the resulting calves being polled. You can also use a homozygous polled (PP) sire, resulting in 100% of the calves being polled. This means you can create a naturally hornless animal in one generation. Because the polled gene is dominant, this allows us to create polled animals faster than if the gene were recessive.

PHENOTYPES & GENOTYPES KEY

PP = True Polled (Homozygous) Animal has no horns and all offspring will be born without horns. Pp = Polled (Heterozygous) Animal does not have horns, but offspring may or may not have horns depending on their mate. pp = Horned (Recessive) Animal will be born with horns.

ST. JACOBS

TYPE WITHOUT COMPROMISE OF KEY DAIRY TRAITS

The St. Jacobs brand has a long-standing history of bringing bulls to the marketplace that will not only sire beautiful cows but cows that are very productive and fertile. The goal of the St. Jacobs brand is to create cows that last longer, are more profitable, and of course, just good to look at!

We invest in the most elite genetics in all ABS programs to give our customers the best opportunity to build cows that fit the needs of their system. St. Jacobs is no exception. Take a moment to get to know each of the programs within the St. Jacobs brand.

LINEAR CHOICE

The St. Jacobs brand should no longer be considered as genetics only suitable for the showring. Knowing some of our customers are looking for balanced cows, we launched Linear Choice. These sires are selected strategically based on their ability to create balanced cows that work in commercial dairies. These sires are proven to produce dairy cows that are well-built, productive, and healthy. This lineup includes sires featuring right side linear that will generate moderate size cows with strong production and health traits. Form meets function with Linear Choice!

ST. JACOBS CHOICE

Trust in St. Jacobs Choice to deliver type without compromise. St. Jacobs Choice was born after the fusion of Judge’s Choice and Breeder’s Choice. Those of you may remember that Judge’s Choice is how St. Jacobs got started with a primary focus on show type animals. Over time, selection began to focus on great functional type but with better production and health traits, thus, Breeder’s Choice evolved. The combination of two foundational lineups in one program is your opportunity to create functional cows who you’ll love to look at

RED AND WHITE CHOICE

Our Red and White Choice program is stacked with sires tracing back to the most elite Red and White cow families in the breed. Similar to St. Jacobs Choice, Red and White Choice sires are also selected for more production and health traits along with type to make outstanding and productive cows. With this program, we mix the best of today’s Black and White genetics into the Red and White population. However, all sires in the lineup will be Red and White.

JERSEY CHOICE

Jersey Choice is your opportunity to use some of the most elite Jersey genetics. Similar to St. Jacobs Choice, Jersey Choice strives to deliver type without compromise. This lineup is focused on providing for those customers interested in creating high type Jersey animals. Our Jersey Choice lineup includes sires that offer balanced genetics with production and health to go along with genomic type, specifically high Jersey Udder Index numbers

COMPONENT COLLECTION

Component Collection includes sires from the Brown Swiss, Ayrshire, and Guernsey breeds. Much like the rest of the St. Jacobs product offerings, these sires are selected from their respective breed’s most elite genetic lines . It is important to note that the Component Collection program is not a program you can enroll in.

BEEF INFOCUS® LINEUP

To enter the Beef InFocus program, sires must be identified as the best terminal genetics by our NuEra Profit Index and complete rigorous testing to validate performance on dairy. We’ve added a step to determine the best use of each sire which is a phenotypic evaluation of frame and muscle score. Based on this evaluation, sires who best complement the Jersey and Jersey-influenced population are identified with the notation of recommended for Jersey.
