FALL 2025 BEEF

FOCAL POINT

At a Glance

We are really excited to present our Fall 2025 Focal Point. As we head into the fall breeding season, we have as exciting a lineup as I’ve ever seen at ABS. We have a set of proven bulls known to deliver on your dollars spent on genetics. Add to that one of the most interesting years of acquisitions at ABS, and I think you will find genetics that you will want to put to use with your herd. Not all bulls are for all people. So, we strive to have variety while also having sound and solid options that deliver the basics and add the profitable components for your operation. You will find several new photos of sires and their progeny that I feel represent what our genetics can do in every environment and add merit to the entire beef industry.

It has been an incredible year for the beef industry. Every day it seems we see new record highs for feeder calves, cull cows, fed cattle, and even cull bulls. Understanding it’s a different time related to finances, this is an opportunity to set yourself up for the future with your genetic investment. The American Angus Association recently reported an average of Angus bulls selling at public auction for $8,445. That is the average! I am ‘old’ enough to remember when they moved bids by $100 a crack on bulls. Your genetic investment today can easily be more than $100-$125 per calf without other costs like bull maintenance. Understanding that investment, your goals, and markets are critical to long term financial success. Today, we also see the different pull of the needs on ranch and downstream. ABS has tools like synchronization and Sexcel® to help you navigate those forks in the road as well as genetics that are more specific to different needs across the industry.

It is indeed an interesting time to be part of the cattle industry. ABS would like to be your genetic supplier, helping you meet your individual operational goals. We want to understand your individual needs and understand what genetics work for you. We say it a lot around here: it’s not about the most popular bull, but which bull best fits what you want to do. Give us a call! We would love to discuss your needs and what we can do to help you.

Sexcel® and 7 & 7 Synch Protocols

A POWERFUL REPRODUCTIVE MANAGEMENT TOOL

Several years ago, 7 & 7 synch protocol burst onto the scene as a new tool in beef cattle reproductive management. The program is touted for its remarkable ability to bring cows into estrus for Fixed-Time AI (FTAI), and conception rates are reported to be on par with, or better than, the “gold standard 7-Day Co-synch + CIDR” protocol. That said, the additional chute trip for 7 & 7 has been a deterrent for some producers. However, savvy embryo transfer programs understand that exceptional estrus response provides an opportunity to maximize the proportion of recipients receiving embryos—in turn resulting in more high-value pregnancies

In a similar fashion, 7 & 7 synch can maximize the number of cows eligible to receive sexed semen. We know conception rates in cows receiving sexed semen improve when the female has displayed estrus by the time of insemination. Ultimately, using sexed semen is about controlling the gender of the resulting pregnancy and calf to create the most valuable product for your operation. The more pregnancies you can influence the better. Estrus response rates with 7 & 7 regularly exceed 80% (sometimes approaching 90%) as compared to a typical Estrus response of 60-65% for other protocols. That additional 15-20% of cows that are primed for sexed semen with 7 & 7 can make a big difference in the resulting calf crop.

IT’S NOT ABOUT CONCEPTION RATE, IT’S ABOUT THE CALVES

Using sexed semen is about controlling the gender of the resulting pregnancy and calf to create the most valuable product for your operation.

The most common dispute against implementing sexed semen is a reduced conception rate. While it is true that sexed semen tends to be lower fertility relative to conventional semen from the same bull, the fertility is more than acceptable. Conception rate isn’t the most important metric anyway. The outcome we all care most about is our calf crop, and exceptionally high estrus response with 7 & 7 synch gives us the best opportunity to control the gender skew of that calf crop. With a little napkin math, it becomes clear that 7 & 7 gives you the opportunity to generate a calf crop with 75% or more of the desired sex. Imagine the value of converting 25% of your annual calf-crop from heifers to steers or generating 25% more heifers to fuel your herd’s expansion.

AN UNEXPECTED OPPORTUNITY

Since 2020, ABS has partnered with the Bair Ranch in central Montana to demonstrate the value of pairing sexed semen with the right reproductive management tools. In 2024, our aim was to use 7 & 7 to synch all the cows to maximize our opportunity to inseminate cows with Sexcel. Mother Nature derailed those plans with heavy rains on our second group of cows, and we quickly pivoted to enrolling those cows in a 7-Day CIDR program. The reproductive outcomes of those 2 groups of cows are shown in Table 1. While it is not a perfect scientific comparison, these real-world results from more than 550 cows demonstrate the power of 7 & 7 to help producers control the gender of their calf crop

In 2025, we synchronized and bred more than 600 females in two groups at the Bair Ranch. The estrus response rates were tremendous, with nearly 90% of both groups displaying estrus by FTAI.

If you’re on the fence about using sexed semen, it’s worth reconsidering the opportunity that pairing Sexcel with 7 & 7 synch presents.

Teat & Udder Quality

The ABS Lineup Through a Maternal Lens

PASTURE TO PLATE STARTS WITH THE COW

ABS understands that nothing happens in the beef business without the right maternal base. With that said, we know maternal means different things for different producers. It’s about the data but also much more. Structural soundness, udder quality, cow family history, production records, and other characteristics not fully explained by an EPD are also critical components.

We’ve designed this year’s Sire Directory to better describe some of our key maternally oriented sires. We’ve changed from an all-purpose perspective to a maternal perspective in highlighting EPDs on those bulls to assist you in making the best choices for your cow herd. We believe in the power of data and suggest that maternal indexes are a great place to start since they combine key maternal traits, their economic value, and associated costs.

While traditional all-purpose mating strategies have served the industry well, today there is also another approach to consider. With sexed semen, producers can now implement precision breeding strategies to eliminate compromises, emphasizing more focused maternal selection on a portion of their herd while simultaneously maximizing terminal value from females not needed to produce replacements. Check out our article about completing the profitability puzzle starting on page 2 as an example of this approach.

Maternal traits are highlighted in green based on the parameters outlined on this page or the top 35% if not specified.

Carcass merit traits and endpoint value indexes are also emphasized and highlighted in gold, as they will contribute ongoing value to future progeny.

KEY MATERNAL COMPONENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS

FERTILITY & LONGEVITY

Improve Fertility However Possible

» While low-heritable traits like fertility can be best improved through crossbreeding, they should also receive emphasis from a maternal selection standpoint.

» Heifer Pregnancy (HP) EPDs are highlighted here.

Longevity is a Key Maternal Driver

» Productive Longevity is a critical component of cowherd sustainability and profitability.

» Simmental and Red Angus offer Stayability EPDs while the Hereford breed publishes Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF).

ADAPTABILITY

Adaptability Traits Are Important

» Different environments bring different challenges and tolerances.

» Hair Shedding (HS) and Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) are traits that can have significant regional maternal importance.

Avoid Extremes for Milk

» Milk needs vary by environment, but generally, we recommend avoiding both extremes.

» The middle 60% of the population for Milk EPD is highlighted.

EFFICIENCY

Reduce Mature Size and Dry Matter Intake

» Feed costs are the largest production expense for cow-calf producers.

» Dry Matter Intake (DMI) and Mature Size (MH, MW & MCW) EPDs in the smallest 50% of the population are highlighted.

FOUNDATION TRAITS

Foot Quality and Docility Are Key

» Improved Foot Quality (Claw & Angle) and Docility (Doc) are components that favorably contribute to both producer satisfaction and cowherd longevity.

Enhance Teat and Udder Quality

» Udder quality pays dividends both in terms of convenience and longevity. The Hereford breed offers EPDs for both Udder Suspension (US) and Teat Size (TS).

Don’t Compromise Maternal Calving Ease

» Overlooking Maternal Calving Ease comes with significant risk.

MATERNAL PERFORMANCE

Calving Ease

» While calving ease is typically only a concern when breeding heifers, we recommend a moderate and consistent emphasis on calving ease within the cowherd to avoid future problems.

» Top 35% for Calving Ease (CE) and top 50% for Birth Weight (BW) are highlighted.

Weaning and Yearling Growth

ADAPTABILITY

» Increased performance is generally a positive, but from a maternal perspective, it must be balanced against larger mature size and input costs.

» Weaning Weight (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW) in the top 60% or better are highlighted.

Leverage the Power of the ABS Pasture to Plate™ Evaluation

EXCLUSIVE SYSTEM BUILT FOR YOU

The Pasture to Plate™ Genetic Evaluation is an exclusive program designed to test progeny of ABS bulls in real world environments and turn that information into tools that will help you select the right genetics to meet your operation’s goals Our team uses genomics, phenotypic information, and two decades’ worth of ABS progeny test data to generate selection indexes you can apply directly to your herd.

HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE DATA

Our genetic evaluation system is a product of our foundation and our past. It was built purposely to identify sires that generate the most profitable feeder cattle in the beef supply chain. This is the very system that we use today to drive genetic progress in our NuEra Genetics program, designed specifically with profitability and the beef supply chain in mind.

Interested in NuEra Genetics?

Check out page 45.

OUR PAST LED US HERE

Challenging the status quo is not new to ABS. In the 1960s, ABS initiated the first large scale, multi-herd progeny test program which was used to screen new bulls added to the ABS lineup. In 1973, ABS published the first EPDs from our progeny test program data. The foundation of ABS was built on data collection and progeny testing. Pioneering in this space of the industry is part of our DNA.

Our system is independent of breed associations and has been developed to allow for across-breed comparison of Angus and Simmental influence bulls on an equal basis. Designed as a straightforward way to evaluate post-weaning profitability, you can have confidence that you are selecting the right sires for you to maximize total end product profit.

DATA SOURCES FOR THE EVALUATION SYSTEM

Each year, more data is added to our evaluation as we continue our focus on data collection and demonstration of genetics at work. Monthly updates to the evaluation incorporate genomics and phenotypic records on tens of thousands of animals from our internal database including progeny test data. It also includes an industry-leading repository of feed intake data collected through ABS programs.

Today our U.S. evaluation system includes more than 13,000 individual feed intake records and exceeds 65,000 carcass records. A comprehensive data set that you can trust when selecting sires for endpoint profitability.

INTAKE (Dry Matter Intake)

» Lower is generally better.

» Use to directly compare bulls of similar index value.

ADG (Average Daily Gain)

» Higher is generally better.

» Use to directly compare bulls of similar index value.

EFFICIENCY Index:

» Reflects the economic value of post weaning feed conversion.

» Use alongside the US Beef Index to identify profitable sires that move the needle for feed efficiency.

CARCASS Index:

» Reflects the economic value of key carcass traits including carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and back fat.

» Use in conjunction with the US Beef Index to identify sires that will maximize net carcass value.

US BEEF Index:

» An economic index designed to identify sires whose progeny will most efficiently convert resources to pounds of quality carcass weight and total endpoint profitability.

» Use to select sires that will maximize the terminal value of a calf crop.

Maximize Profit with End Product Profitability

A quality end product and increased pounds are key economic drivers in the entire beef supply chain. Our customers interested in retaining ownership and endpoint profitability need sires that excel in growth performance, feed efficiency, and carcass merit. Angus sires in the Performance and End Product Profitability section or our NuEra Genetics lineup are identified as excelling for these traits.

ABS GLOBAL’S PROPRIETARY U.S. BEEF INDEX

Our U.S. Beef Index is a terminal profit selection index that is expressed as dollars of profitability per head of progeny. This is an economic selection index that considers historical cattle and feed prices and a future-looking estimate of feed costs in its calculation. Our proprietary index is calculated using a host of data sources including our progeny test programs and long-time industry partners.

TOP 30 ABS ACTIVE SIRES US BEEF TERMINAL INDEX

This index is an ideal tool for producers who are looking to segment their cowherd for a maternal-terminal system like the Sexcel 60/40 Synch program, or those who simply aim to maximize the terminal value of an entire calf crop.
