At a Glance

A topic that has come up more frequently when talking to producers lately is the choice of maternal versus terminal traits. Historically, beef producers have chosen genetics that excel for maternal and endpoint profitability. While this all-purpose genetic strategy has proven to be successful, it can result in unintended consequences for cow-calf producers operating in our changing beef industry environment.

Nonetheless, today’s tools, technology, and genetics eliminate the risk of compromising a segment of your herd to gain in another direction. Our Sexcel and 60/40 Synch program are game changers that allow you to create the right pregnancies for your operation. You have the power to make matings with intent, build your best cowherd, create more profitable feeders, and ultimately, maximize your profitability

You will notice several changes to this year’s Breeder’s Journal to help you in your genetic selection process. The sires are categorized from maternal, all-purpose, and terminal perspectives with their EPD blocks highlighted respectively. Knowing the cow is the engine of productivity at the producer level, we developed a maternal checklist to express pain points that are not always well-presented by an EPD. We hope this publication encourages you to evaluate your specific goals and assists you in finding the right bulls to meet your needs.

The ABS Lineup Through a Maternal Lens

PASTURE TO PLATE STARTS WITH THE COW

ABS understands that nothing happens in the beef business without the right maternal base. With that said, we know maternal means different things for different producers. It’s about the data but also much more. Structural soundness, udder quality, cow family history, production records, and other characteristics not fully explained by an EPD are also critical components.

We’ve designed this year’s Breeder’s Journal to better describe some of our key maternally oriented sires. We’ve added Maternal Checklist items and changed from an all-purpose perspective to a maternal perspective in highlighting EPDs on those bulls to assist you in making the best choices for your cow herd. We believe in the power of data and suggest that maternal indexes are a great place to start as they combine key maternal traits, their economic value, and associated costs.

While traditional all-purpose mating strategies have served the industry well, today there is also another approach to consider. With sexed semen, producers can now implement precision breeding strategies to eliminate compromises, emphasizing more focused maternal selection on a portion of their herd while simultaneously maximizing terminal value from females not needed to produce replacements. Check out our Sexcel®60/40 Synch program on page 23 as an example of this approach.

Maternal traits are highlighted in green based on the parameters outlined on this page or the top 35% if not specified.

Carcass merit traits and endpoint value indexes are also emphasized and highlighted in gold, as they will contribute ongoing value to future progeny.

KEY MATERNAL COMPONENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS

FERTILITY & LONGEVITY

Improve Fertility However Possible

» While low-heritable traits like fertility can be best improved through crossbreeding, they should also receive emphasis from a maternal selection standpoint.

» Heifer Pregnancy (HP) EPDs are highlighted here.

Longevity is a Key Maternal Driver

» Productive Longevity is a critical component of cowherd sustainability and profitability.

» Simmental and Red Angus offer Stayability EPDs while the Hereford breed publishes Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF).

ADAPTABILITY

Adaptability Traits are Important

» Different environments bring different challenges and tolerances.

» Hair Shedding (HS) and Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) are traits that can have significant regional maternal importance.

Avoid Extremes for Milk

» Milk needs vary by environment, but generally, we recommend avoiding both extremes.

» The middle 60% of the population for Milk EPD is highlighted.

EFFICIENCY

Reduce Mature Size and Dry Matter Intake

» Feed costs are the largest production expense for cow-calf producers.

» Dry Matter Intake (DMI) and Mature Size (MH, MW & MCW) EPDs in the smallest 50% of the population are highlighted.

FOUNDATION TRAITS

Foot Quality and Docility are Key

» Improved Foot Quality (Claw & Angle) and Docility (Doc) are components that favorably contribute to both producer satisfaction and cowherd longevity.

Enhance Teat and Udder Quality

» Udder quality pays dividends both in terms of convenience and longevity. The Hereford breed offers EPDs for both Udder Suspension (US) and Teat Size (TS).

Don’t Compromise Maternal Calving Ease

» Overlooking Maternal Calving Ease comes with significant risk.

MATERNAL PERFORMANCE

Calving Ease

» While calving ease is typically only a concern when breeding heifers, we recommend a moderate and consistent emphasis on calving ease within the cowherd to avoid future problems.

» Top 35% for Calving Ease (CE) and top 50% for Birth Weight (BW) are highlighted.

Weaning and Yearling Growth

» Increased performance is generally a positive, but from a maternal perspective, it must be balanced against larger mature size and input costs.

» Weaning Weight (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW) in the top 60% or better are highlighted. ADAPTABILITY

The ABS Sires With a Terminal Emphasis

For some, the word terminal carries a negative connotation. But, in reality, the vast majority of calf crops have a terminal destination in the beef supply chain. If your terminal endpoint is selling calves at weaning, the weaning weight may seem like the only relevant trait to consider. Nevertheless, the beef industry operates with a rapidly improving ability to “connect the dots” from ranch to grocery store. So, whether you retain ownership to the rail or not, traits that drive profitability post-weaning are important.

Today, cattle feeders expect fast-growing, healthy cattle that convert feed to pounds of carcass weight efficiently. Packers expect as much high-quality carcass weight as possible for every hook space. Meanwhile, consumers demand an exceptional eating experience. Because of improvements in data collection, EPDs, and genomics in the last few decades, beef producers can better select genetics that drive profit in cattle feeding and carcass value to meet the demand of the beef supply chain.

Because pounds and post-weaning profitability matter, choose sires who excel for growth performance, feed efficiency, and carcass merit. We recommend using economic indexes because they combine and weigh the relative impact of traits into one simple and effective selection tool ($B, $TI, TSI, or the ABS US Beef Index). You can trust these ABS sires to help you reach your goals, regardless of your calves’ terminal endpoint.

You will see in the EPD blocks in the following pages that terminally-oriented traits in the top 35% are highlighted blue.

CORE CONSIDERATIONS AND TRAITS FOR TERMINAL PROFITABILITY

INCREASE GROWTH

» Yearling Weight (YW) EPD is one of our most reliable tools to select for faster-growing cattle.

IMPROVE FEED EFFICIENCY

» For over 25 years, ABS’ unwavering focus on collecting feed intake data has made us the industry leader in identifying feed efficiency genetics.

» Look at Dry Matter Intake (DMI) and Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) EPDs as indicators of feed conversion.

» Rely on the ABS Efficiency Index alongside the US Beef Index for the most unbiased economic consideration of feed conversion.

INCREASE CARCASS WEIGHT

» Pounds pay, pounds first. Carcass Premiums are applied on a per-pound basis.

» Don’t underestimate the importance of Carcass Weight (CW) EPD in your terminal selection criteria.

CAPTURE CARCASS QUALITY PREMIUMS

» Marbling (MARB) EPDs are our best predictor of carcass quality and a valuable tool in capturing the upside in today’s carcass grids.

MAINTAIN CUTABILITY

» Ribeye Area (REA) and Fat Thickness (FAT, BF) EPDs provide us with excellent tools to help ensure that we do not sacrifice red meat yield in our quest for increased marbling.

ADAPTABILITY

» Pulmonary Arterial Pressure (PAP) EPD is increasingly being considered as a tool for Angus-sired cattle to potentially mitigate late-term mortalities in feedlot.

Navigate the Beef Industry’s ‘Fork in the Road’ With Tools and Genetics

SHOULD YOU CHOOSE MATERNAL? SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TERMINAL? OR CAN YOU HAVE BOTH?

There is a fork in the road for beef producers, and it presents an opportunity to optimize your breeding program. You can choose either direction or take both at the same time, because each path is achievable with today’s genetics, tools, and technology.

The fork represents the vast difference between genetics that maximize feedlot and carcass performance versus genetics that optimize maternal efficiency and profitability at the farm or ranch level. Some producers have already reached this juncture and are indecisive about which path to take. While that is understandable, it is key to remember that the decision to breed “down the middle” and not embrace diverging paths could result in sacrificing in maternal or terminal traits.

Historically, a bull had to do everything well, from pasture to plate. Today, with tools like fixed-time AI and sexed semen, you can laser-focus your breeding decisions to create maternally efficient replacement females and exceptionally profitable feeder cattle without sacrifice. Whether you are concerned about sustainability, efficiency, or making the most of your resources at hand, embracing the ‘Fork in the Road’ may be your solution to maximizing profitability. And the most exciting part is you no longer need to compromise because of strategies like Sexcel® 60/40 Synch.

The beauty of a Sexcel 60/40 Synch strategy is the ability to take both forks, maternal and terminal, at the same time. This breeding program gives you the power to strategically design replacement females out of the right cows while maximizing performance and profitability on calves destined for the beef supply chain. THE 60 IN THE EQUATION:

Sexcel® 60/40 Synch is a strategic breeding program that gives you the power to design replacement heifers from the right segment of your cows while maximizing performance and endpoint value of the remainder of your calf crop.

Take advantage of the convenience of estrus synchronization protocols to identify your most fertile cows. Well-managed herds can expect more than 60% of the females to display estrus by scheduled breeding time when utilizing the 7-day Co-synch + CIDR protocol.

THE END RESULT:

THE 40 IN THE EQUATION:

The remaining 40% of cows should be bred via timed AI to terminally oriented bulls. To reap the most benefits from the program, all females should be exposed to clean-up sires that excel for growth performance and endpoint value.

A calf crop composed of 30-35% designed, AI-sired replacement heifers and 65-70% high-value feeder calves.

Females that display estrus with fully activated patches are time AI’d with Sexcel semen from maternally designed bulls

Females that do not display estrus are time AI’d with conventional semen from terminally oriented bulls

All cows are synchronized and fitted with Estrotect™ patches. All cows are exposed to a terminally-oriented sire for clean up.

SEXED SEMEN PROTOCOLS

For additional synchronization protocols visit BeefRepro.org

Use of sexed semen can result in conception rates that are decreased compared to conventional semen used in the same situation

HEAT DETECTION

Sexed semen can be used on any female observed in estrus (heat) and following synchronization with any protocol on the Cow or Heifer Protocol Sheet.

For best results with sexed semen perform AI 16 to 22 hr after detecting female in estrus. Use of estrus detection aids (EDA) is highly recommended.

FIXED-TIME AI

Time for Fixed-time AI (TAI) should be considered as the approximate average time of insemination based on the number of females to inseminate, labor, and facilities.

To optimize pregnancy success, it is recommended to use sexed semen on females that have exhibited estrus before TAI and conventional semen on females that have not exhibited estrus.

HEIFERS

7-day CO-Synch+CIDR®

Perform TAI with GnRH at 72 ± 2 hr after PG.

COWS

7-day CO-Synch+CIDR®

Perform TAI with GnRH at 60 to 66 hr after PG.

HEIFERS ONLY

PG-7 7-day CO-Synch+CIDR®
