As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, pink ribbons appear everywhere, symbolizing numerous initiatives for breast cancer survivors. While these efforts are well-intentioned, they can sometimes serve as a painful reminder of the challenges women face with their breast cancer journey, such as long-term physical and emotional effects, fear of recurrence, and the struggle to regain normalcy and self-worth. Many groups and initiatives claim to offer support but often fall short of providing a genuine space for growth and transformation. When VBD Magazine discovered the incredible work of Dr. Michele D. Clark, dedicated to empowering high-achieving women navigating life after breast cancer, we knew we had to share her inspiring story and insights with you.

Dr. Michele D. Clark, LMSW, is a breast cancer survivor, CEO of LIFT After Breast Cancer, licensed mental health therapist, global transformational speaker, bestselling author, podcast hostess, life coach, and partner with Black Leaders Worldwide™. She would tell you that her most rewarding role is being a mother of two, one of whom has special needs. To balance these roles, she is intentional with her time: prioritizing tasks that align with her mission while enabling her to be fully present with her children. What drives her to excel is knowing that her work can inspire others to overcome their own challenges, just as she strives to navigate hers with grace and purpose, leading a life full of meaning and joy.

Her Journey with Breast Cancer

Dr. Michele’s journey with breast cancer began in 2015, and it changed her life in ways she never could have anticipated. After surviving two strokes, she thought she had faced her toughest battle, but breast cancer tested her resilience, faith, and strength. It forced her to confront not just her physical health, but her mental and emotional well-being as well, shaping her into an even more determined and purpose-driven individual.

To anyone who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Michele says: “take a deep breath and know that you are not alone. It’s okay to feel scared, angry, or overwhelmed—those feelings are valid. But also know that you are stronger than you think. Educate yourself about your diagnosis and treatment options, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek second opinions. Surround yourself with a supportive network of family, friends, and healthcare providers. Take things one step at a time and remember that leaning on others is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
