Welcome to the fall issue of VBD Magazine – a celebration of faith, family, and extraordinary journeys of success and impact. As we embrace the season of change and reflection, we are thrilled to bring you stories that inspire and remind us of the incredible power of purpose.
This issue’s cover features Chuck and Bree West, the dynamic husband-and-wife team behind OCTET Productions. As executives, filmmakers, and visionaries, Chuck and Bree have built a production empire rooted in faith, storytelling, and community. Their work transcends the screen, bringing to life authentic and inspiring narratives that reflect the complexity of the African American experience.
We are also turning the spotlight on Dr. Tiffany “Miz Tiffany” Coleman-McGee, a trailblazer in the Christian hip-hop world. Her impactful album, I Ain’t Preaching to the Choir, has made waves in the gospel music scene, earning a nomination for Rap/Hip Hop Gospel CD of the Year at the prestigious Stellar Awards. Notably, Miz Tiffany became the first female solo rap artist to receive such an honor at the Stellars.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, VBD Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with two remarkable breast cancer survivors: Dr. Michele D. Clark and Dr. Rose-Ann Smith. Both shared their powerful stories of resilience, faith, and triumph over adversity. We also interviewed Dr. Cordy B. McGill-Scarlett, a psychiatrist who opened up about his inspiring journey through medical school while battling a life-threatening condition that required a kidney transplant. Their stories remind us of the strength found in faith, perseverance, and the support of others.
As we reflect on our paths and dreams during this season, we at VBD Magazine believe that with faith, action, and perseverance, every dream is within reach.
Stay safe, stay connected, and as always, stay victorious. Enjoy this issue.

Victorious By Design (VBD)
Magazine is celebrating three years of touching our readers’ lives as a leading quarterly lifestyle, business, and literary publication for personal, professional, and organizational transformation. This was a dream that became a reality when I collaborated with Kerry-Ann McPherson, the former Managing Editor, to launch and publish the premier issue in October 2021.
Twelve issues later, VBD Magazine has blessed the lives of many through sharing the stories of God’s power and faithfulness in the lives of those who embrace His will and purpose for their lives.
As we celebrate our third anniversary, I am filled with immense gratitude and awe at the journey we’ve undertaken together. What started as a seed of inspiration, rooted in faith and purpose, has blossomed into
a thriving publication that touches lives, empowers communities, and propels individuals toward their God-given destinies. This milestone marks not just the passing of time but the stories of triumph, resilience, and unwavering faith that we’ve had the privilege to share with you, our cherished readers.
Three years ago, when the idea for VBD Magazine came about, it wasn’t simply to fill pages with content. It was a divine calling—to create a platform that uplifts, inspires, and equips individuals to live victorious lives. Victorious By Design isn’t just a name; it’s a declaration. It’s a reminder that no matter where you start, God has a purpose and a plan for your life. Victory is not only possible, but it’s also promised to those who walk in faith and pursue their calling.
In the early days of this journey, there were moments of doubt, uncertainty, and challenges, but through it all, God’s hand has been evident. I recall the first issue of VBD Magazine like it was yesterday—our focus was to highlight individuals who were not just surviving but thriving in their respective fields while staying anchored in their faith. From ministry leaders to entrepreneurs, authors, and creatives, our goal has always been to shine a light on those whose lives reflect the goodness and grace of God.
Over the past three years, we’ve had the honor of featuring an incredible array of voices—authors, business leaders, ministry figures, and influencers who are purpose-driven and faith-focused. These individuals have not only shared their personal stories of trials and triumphs but have also provided practical wisdom to help our readers navigate their own journeys.
In our first issue, we were delighted to highlight the incredible journey of cover story business mogul Dr. Pasha Carter, who provided our readers with tips for launching a successful business and shared the history behind her success. Since then, the front cover of
the magazine has been graced with the inspirational and victorious stories of:
l Bindu Chowritmootoo, Life & Leadership Coach and Serial Entrepreneur
l Dr. Dwaine Cooke, Consultant Neurosurgeon
l Eric and Dr. Sakeisha Hylick, Marriage and Relationship Success Strategists
l Stacey-Lee Abrahams, HR Consultant, Artistic Director and Philanthropist
l Dr. Joseph Plummer, Professor of Surgery (General and Colorectal) at UHWI and Head of the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anesthesia, and Intensive Care at UWI, Mona Campus.
l Taylor Kirkpatrick, Entrepreneur and Pageant Winner
l Dr. Ravi Patel, Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician
l Dr. Rhonda Wood, Mental Health Advocate and Entrepreneur
l Dr. Jennifer Harris, Real Estate Broker, Speaker, Coach, Philanthropist, Author, and Founder/CEO of Purses, Pumps, and Power Network™ and Ladies First Capital™
l Kimberla Lawson Roby, New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author and Speaker
Twenty-five amazing authors were first featured in the Star Power List, a section dedicated to phenomenal individuals who are walking in purpose and using their skills and talents to positively impact lives while leaving their marks on industries. Since then, VBD Magazine has showcased the stories of gospel artistes, playwrights, dancers, authors, publishers, influential physicians, and twenty-four influential female entrepreneurs to watch in 2024. With a different list for each
issue, readers have been inspired by people who challenge the status quo and are not afraid to break new ground.
The Literary Den Section has been a treasure trove of practical tips and advice for current and aspiring authors and publishers, particularly within the Christian space. It has brought game-changing brand visibility to countless authors and author coaches, helping them to connect with readers in a safe and vulnerable way. One of the very first tips from bestselling author Dr. Velma Bagby encouraged authors to find their T-R-I-B-E (teachers, relationships, investors, beliefs and expectations) as a key to their success in the literary world. Taking it beyond the pages, authors received valuable tips and strategies to help them expand their platforms, increase sales, and get their books into the hands of readers.
In the Entrepreneurship Section of the magazine, we have had the privilege of highlighting business leaders whose journeys remind us that entrepreneurship is not just about profit and growth, but about building something lasting, and importantly, something that aligns with your values, honors God, and positively impacts others.
The section has been a source of empowerment for budding entrepreneurs and seasoned business leaders alike. From practical tips on leadership and innovation to real-life examples of overcoming adversity, this section continues to provide invaluable guidance for those looking to build businesses that are not
only profitable but transformative. It’s a space where faith and business intersect, proving that with God at the center, the possibilities are endless.
One of my greatest dreams for the magazine was to tell the tales of ordinary and everyday people doing extraordinary things. Leaders within the Pioneers’ Paradise Section exemplified this victorious living and were willing to share what they had learned on their journeys.
The first pioneer to break ground was Dr. Henritta Stewart, a passionate educator who shared her successes, challenges, and tips for creating work-life balance. In this spot reserved for trailblazers, innovators, barrier breakers, and movers and shakers, readers learned about pastors and soldiers, authors and ministers, educators and sports players.
We cannot begin to capture the countless ways our readers have been touched by the diverse sections of the magazine—our personal and professional development haven, the oasis of inspiration, and lifestyle lessons that span health and wellness, fashion and beauty, travel and exploration, and the love zone. In a world filled with disheartening news and unsettling stories, VBD Magazine serves as a true oasis, offering hope, encouragement, and empowerment. We are honored to be part of our readers’ journeys, providing a space where they can find both respite and motivation. The stories of victory, love, and empowerment that have been shared in our pages are not just for today; they will continue to inspire for generations to come.
Over the years, we’ve watched this community grow—from our readers and contributors to the leaders we’ve featured. The connections we’ve built have extended far beyond the pages of the magazine, fostering relationships and collaborations that continue to bear fruit.
One of the highlights of our journey has been hearing from our readers. From heartfelt messages of how an article spoke directly to them during a season of struggle, to testimonies of how our featured experts and authors provided practical solutions to real-life problems, we are reminded that this platform is doing exactly what it was designed to do—transform lives. It’s not just about words on a page; it’s about lives being impacted, faith being restored, and hearts being encouraged.
We’ve also been intentional about creating spaces for deeper connection, whether through our social media platforms, exclusive webinars, or community events. VBD Magazine has always been about fostering real, meaningful engagement, and as we step into our fourth year, we
remain committed to nurturing these connections even more.
We’ve listened to your feedback, learned from our experiences, and continually refined our vision. Each issue of VBD Magazine has been a labor of love, carefully crafted to ensure that we bring the most relevant, inspiring, and faith-filled content to our readers. We are also proud of the role we’ve played in amplifying underrepresented voices. VBD Magazine has been a platform for diversity, showcasing the stories of individuals from various backgrounds and walks of life who are united by their faith and commitment to living victoriously.
I thank God for His faithfulness in guiding us every step of the way. Without His direction, none of this would be possible. I also want to express my deepest thanks to our dedicated team, whose passion and hard work have made VBD Magazine what it is today. From our writers and designers to our editors and photographers, each member has played a crucial role in our success.
Our phenomenal magazine team includes Paula Hamilton, Icylin Morgan, Beverlyn Johnson, Dr. Henritta Stewart, Dr. Dacia Morgan, Dr. Ruby Evans, Dr. Scott Merriman, Attorney Mark Jennings, Kerry-Ann McPherson, Kay Johnson-Clennon, Waletta Mason Dunn, Shauna-Kay Harrison, Sardia Jennings, Jacquiline Cox, Jujuana Howard, Aleksandar Stankovic, Millicent Battick, Shaun Battick, Ramona Powell Dennis, Pastor Danyelle Scroggins, and Brittany Rockwell. We eagerly anticipate the ongoing harmony, synergy, and collaboration that continues to drive VBD Magazine in fulfilling its mission.
To our readers—thank you. You are the heartbeat of VBD Magazine. Your stories, feedback, and continued support have inspired us to keep going, even on the days when the road seemed difficult. It is because of you that we remain committed to delivering content that transforms and uplifts. We will continue to stand on the foundation of faith, purpose, and excellence, trusting that God will guide us as we reach new heights. Together, we will live, love, and lead—Victorious By Design.
Howell Singleton is a woman of many talents and blessings. She has dedicated her personal and professional life to her Savior, family, students, friends, and community. Reverend Singleton is a hard-working, focused, dedicated, and committed person. Through a lifetime of service, she has commanded the respect of those with whom she has used her God-given talents to lead effectively and lovingly.
Reverend Singleton’s spiritual life demonstrates a proper walk of love. According to her philosophy of living, Singleton loves people no matter their situation or station in life. She believes that despite life’s challenges, we are placed on Earth to effect positive change. Singleton states, “We are our “brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. Philippians 2:4 tells us, Let each of you look not only to his interests but also to the interests of others.” This philosophy is constantly exhibited in her daily life as she seeks to provide opportunities for others.
Reverend Singleton was born in Brooker, Florida, the third of 12 children, to Winford Alfonso Howell and LuGladys Howell (nee McAlister). Singleton mentions that her grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Jane McAlister, was also instrumental in her life. She served as a certified midwife in the Brooker area and was a role model for Reverend Singleton and her siblings.
She also vividly remembers how her mother began college study at 60 at Santa Fe Community College, Gainesville, Florida, and subsequently taught in Alachua County Public Schools as an elementary teacher for ten years. Singleton reminisces, “The parents and elders in my family and community modeled hard work, determination, perseverance, and success. Without question, one of their favorite scriptures was ‘Proverbs 22:6, Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.’”
Singleton began her postsecondary education at Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Florida, earned her associate degree from Santa Fe Community College in 1971, a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1973, and a master’s degree from the University of Florida in 1974. She completed advanced studies and doctoral coursework in educational administration at the University of Florida from 1978 to 1979. In each educational
setting, Singleton completed her studies with academic honors.
Reverend Singleton’s professional background demonstrates a steady progression in leadership advancement, beginning with secondary classroom instruction in the 1970’s. Reverend Singleton has faculty and administrative experience that spans five decades in institutional settings, including secondary and higher
education. Among her professional experiences, Singleton was employed with the Alachua County Public School District as a classroom teacher from March 1973 to September 1975. After graduating from Santa Fe Community College, she began working there full-time in 1975. She served in various leadership positions, including coordinator and director, for 28 years at Santa Fe.
One of her most notable positions at Santa Fe was the Director of Minority Affairs, later renamed the Office of Ethnic Diversity, where she served for over 12 years. Singleton remarks, “I had the opportunity to address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) before those became buzzwords. I praise God for the limitless opportunities to positively impact the lives of students and staff with whom I interacted at Santa Fe. I am proud of the work I completed there.”
Singleton was named a Kellogg Leadership Fellows Program participant during her active service as a community college administrator. The program prepared women and minority middle management and faculty members for leadership positions in community colleges. Singleton was one of 20 participants selected by a national panel for the year-long program sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College and the University of Texas at Austin . She was honored as a Leroy Collins Distinguished Community College Alumni recipient, received a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Award from Santa Fe, and won the Gold Award for Exemplary Practice from the Florida Association of Community Colleges Commission on Equity. With a smile, Singleton states, “Santa Fe was a vibrant training ground for my academic preparation, administrative work, and modeling of service to others. Here, Luke 6:38 is evident, ‘Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.’”
Singleton also worked at the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office for five years as a
Senior vs. Crime program sleuth. During the same period, she volunteered in the Senior Citizen Program sponsored by the Elder Care Program. Serving students and others did not end with Reverend Singleton’s retirement from the educational system and Santa Fe Community College in 2003. She continued serving in the public sector of Alachua County as an Administrative Assistant to Von Fraser, Alachua County Tax Collector. Moreover, she worked as a substitute teacher with the Alachua County Public Schools District from 2004 to 2013.
Reverend Singleton graduated from the Central Florida Annual Conference Institute, resulting in her role as an Ordained Itinerant Episcopal Elder and clergy member. After completing her ministerial studies, she pastored Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Micanopy, Florida, for eight years. As an active pastor, Reverend Singelton wrote and presented the 11th District Episcopal Report at its Annual Conferences. At age 75, Singleton retired after many years of annual conference administration service.
Reverend Singleton served as a Chaplain at Alachua General Hospital, Gainesville, Florida, for ten years. She shares, “My service as a hospital chaplain was one of the most challenging times in my personal and professional life. Those experiences— supporting families who were often amid tragic circumstances—required an excessive amount of personal strength and mental fortitude. Having to ‘remain strong’ for the families while being moved to tears was beyond challenging. Still, here I relied on the scripture, ‘1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.’ With time, I learned to bracket my feelings and to support the families who needed my spiritual strength while they could not find theirs in trying circumstances.”
While she has retired from her roles as an active pastor in the AME Church and hospital chaplain, Singleton remains active in mentoring others, particularly the younger generation, in faith and community service. The AME Church has honored her as a Woman of Distinction. Reverend Singleton says, “All the honors and accolades are nice. To be sure, it is a good feeling to know that others appreciate your service. Overall, though, I know service; service is what I do.”
Reverend Singleton’s heart is near and dear to the Unique Women’s Club, Inc., a nonprofit charity she cofounded with others more than five decades ago. The UWC provides scholarships to eligible students in the Alachua County area, outreach to senior citizens in the community, and sponsorship to a local nursing home.
“It is essential that I give back to today’s young people and encourage them to
attend college,” Singleton shares. “I still remember my parents sending me to Bethune Cookman with my clothes and only ten dollars in my pocket. I fully understand the need for and importance of providing financial support to young people on their way to college. The UWC project is a mainstay in my life as it allows me to continue actively helping and serving young people, who are our future. Moreover, it will enable me to honor and respect the elders in our community. My legacy is one of helping others. Because I have received so many blessings in life, I have constantly endeavored to be a blessing to others. Here I am reminded of Proverbs 3:27: Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.’”
APPLY YOURSELF TO THE SCRIPTURES AND THE SCRIPTURES TO YOURSELF.
Reverend Singleton enjoyed 57 years of marital bliss with Brother Moses Singleton before he transitioned on August 6, 2011. Singleton states, “Moses was a man for the ages. God gave me a wonderful husband and a devoted father to our children.” They are the parents of Reverend Gregory, Apostle Vernon, Minister Oriska, Gerald, and Derrick Singleton. They also have more than 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Reverend Singleton loves spending time
with family, worshiping, cooking, reading, and fishing. She also continues to provide support and service to others, especially the young and the elderly.
Reverend Singleton’s spiritual affiliation is the Living Word Church of Faith in Alachua, Florida, led by Pastors Vernon (her son) and Mitzi Singleton (daughterin-law). Reverend Singleton identifies her favorite song as “I Know it was the Blood,” her favorite scripture as Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path.” Singleton maintains her spiritual growth and well-being by regularly attending her son’s Sunday services and Wednesday Bible studies.
As an anointed child of God, Reverend Singleton feels that she has reached, touched, and made a difference in the lives of many spiritually, educationally, and economically. Singleton reflects, “My life of service is my tribute to my parents, my grandmother Eliza, and the exemplary lives they lived and modeled for me in community service.”
Singleton transferred her philosophy of helping others into each professional setting she served, giving her students the support and access needed to succeed. Drawing upon the examples her parents and Grandmother Eliza displayed, Reverend Singleton treated all individuals respectfully and dignifiedly. Looking back at her career, she is most proud of the lives of others that she touched, especially students.
Although she has slowed down a bit, Reverend Singleton continues to serve God by helping others. She applies the scripture, Deuteronomy 15:11, ‘For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and the poor, in your land.’”
An Oral History With Rev. Geraldine Singleton, September 30, 2021
LEAVING A MARK THAT CANNOT BE ERASED
by Ann Marie Bryan
“Ilove to impart knowledge and interact with students,” says Icylin Morgan, a wife, mother, and educator. “It’s my mission. I want all my students to succeed.”
In a candid conversation with VBD Magazine, the educator extraordinaire discusses engaging reluctant learners, global citizenship education, and strategies to employ when adapting to the unexpected.
Icylin seems at ease, yet laser focused, in her beautiful, well-manicured backyard, where we sat. With effortless grace and an ever-ready smile, she responds to our questions. It is easy to see how her gentle, infectious allure, educational qualifications, and professional experience, combined with her student-centered approach, led to the status of esteemed educator and leader. Dive into our interview and get inspired! Above all, take action!
Icylin grew up in Jamaica, West Indies. “I was born into a family of humble beginnings that fostered love, respect, honesty, hard work, caring, dedication, and a willingness to help one another.” She is the first of eleven children. “My parents taught us to put God first. I was constantly reminded to be a role model for my siblings. With that in mind, I set my goals—build my relationship with the Lord, manage my family life, and pursue my educational goals.”
Icylin chuckled when we asked what inspired her to become an educator. “My passion was to be in health care, to be a pediatric nurse. However, my journey into teaching began when I became a teaching assistant and developed a bond with students of all ages. I saw teaching as a way for me to help students maximize their potential and accomplish their dreams.”
After working as a teaching assistant for two years, Icylin attended Church Teachers’ College, Mandeville, Jamaica, where she obtained a Certificate in Primary Education and subsequently, a Diploma in Primary Education. Meeting the monetary obligations for her education was tough. “There were many financial challenges along the way.”
In the latter years, Icylin gained a Diploma in School Management and Administration (Mico University College), a Bachelor of Science in Education degree (Western Carolina University), and a Master of Education degree (Florida A&M University).
After graduating from Church Teachers’ College, Icylin got married to George and they have been married for forty-six years. While it was a difficult task to balance home, work, and community life, Icylin still managed to make her mark in all these areas. “I work extremely hard to achieve my goals. I love to teach and mentor so I pray for health and strength daily. Some days were long and hard, but my achievements compensated for that.”
Climbing the ladder of success in the education system, Icylin went from teacher to senior teacher, then master teacher, next
EDUCATION IS ONE OF THE KEYS TO SUCCESS, SO I TRY TO ENGRAIN THIS IN MY CHILDREN AND SIBLINGS.
guidance counselor, and finally principal. Today, Icylin is a highly trained and accomplished educator with forty plus years of progressive experience and accomplishments as an administrator and teacher in elementary and middle school levels of education. She possesses strong behavioral management skills and extensive experience in modifying teaching strategies and assessment methods to support and nurture students’ accomplishments.
“Education is one of the keys to success, so I try to engrain this in my children and siblings.” It came as no surprise when Icylin added, “I consider myself a lifelong learner. I have a mindset that is constantly pushing to find out what’s new so that I can hone my expertise.”
Along with three biological children, Icylin parented six others from her extended family. “They all have made me proud. Two are medical doctors and the others have master’s degrees in different areas.”
Icylin also serves in the role of mentor in her workplace, church, and community. “Mentoring is important. Many leaders have credited their success in part to their mentors. There is nothing like having someone in your life who can offer good guidance and empower you to make excellent decisions.”
What about teaching 21st-century learners to become global citizens? “That we must do. We are one global community and that should be communicated to students. Our actions not only affect people locally and nationally, but also internationally.”
Here are Icylin’s tips for teaching global citizenship education:
l Teach students the importance of experiencing other cultures and celebrating diversity.
l Include global stories in the curriculum and have discussions on worldwide events.
l Create sessions for one-on-one communication with individuals from other cultures.
l Arrange trips to other countries and organize an international week.
At times, teachers struggle with engaging reluctant learners. Check out Icylin’s suggestions to overcome this:
l Find a point of interest and engage the student from that perspective.
l Ask the student to help manage a class project.
l Send positive notes about students to their parents/guardians.
l Build productive relationships with parents/guardians that fosters partnerships in their children’s education.
“My philosophy is that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. That gives me the inherent motivation to stand firm in difficult times.”
Here are Icylin’s top steps for dealing with tough situations:
l Start by praying. Always put God first in whatever you do.
l Remind yourself of how far you’ve come, and of all the obstacles and challenges that are behind you.
l Discuss the situation with a trusted family member, friend, relative, or pastor.
l Create an action plan to deal with the issue.
l Stay confident and stay away from fear and procrastination.
l Maintain your focus no matter what.
Leaders like Icylin are catalysts for change. She is a change agent for education, demonstrating a participative and supportive leadership style in administration of school policies, procedures, and activities.
“Any day that I’m teaching and mentoring is a great day. I consider myself blessed and I’m grateful for all the opportunities that I have received. It’s my job to pay it forward and give everyone a chance to succeed.” In our education system, Icylin is leaving a mark that cannot be erased.

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, pink ribbons appear everywhere, symbolizing numerous initiatives for breast cancer survivors. While these efforts are well-intentioned, they can sometimes serve as a painful reminder of the challenges women face with their breast cancer journey, such as long-term physical and emotional effects, fear of recurrence, and the struggle to regain normalcy and self-worth. Many groups and initiatives claim to offer support but often fall short of providing a genuine space for growth and transformation. When VBD Magazine discovered the incredible work of Dr. Michele D. Clark, dedicated to empowering high-achieving women navigating life after breast cancer, we knew we had to share her inspiring story and insights with you.
Dr. Michele D. Clark, LMSW, is a breast cancer survivor, CEO of LIFT After Breast Cancer, licensed mental health therapist, global transformational speaker, bestselling author, podcast hostess, life coach, and partner with Black Leaders Worldwide™. She would tell you that her most rewarding role is being a mother of two, one of whom has special needs. To balance these roles, she is intentional with her time: prioritizing tasks that align with her mission while enabling her to be fully present with her children. What drives her to excel is knowing that her work can inspire others to overcome their own challenges, just as she strives to navigate hers with grace and purpose, leading a life full of meaning and joy.
Dr. Michele’s journey with breast cancer began in 2015, and it changed her life in ways she never could have anticipated. After surviving two strokes, she thought she had faced her toughest battle, but breast cancer tested her resilience, faith, and strength. It forced her to confront not just her physical health, but her mental and emotional well-being as well, shaping her into an even more determined and purpose-driven individual.
To anyone who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Michele says: “take
a deep breath and know that you are not alone. It’s okay to feel scared, angry, or overwhelmed—those feelings are valid. But also know that you are stronger than you think. Educate yourself about your diagnosis and treatment options, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek second opinions. Surround yourself with a supportive network of family, friends, and healthcare providers. Take things one step at a time and remember that leaning on others is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
Throughout her journey, Dr. Michele realized there was a need for a community that goes beyond traditional support groups—a space where survivors could truly focus on thriving, not just surviving, after treatment.
As a result, LIFT After Breast Cancer, LLC was founded to address the gaps in

cancer and the subsequent mastectomy. Dr. Michele passionately stated her plan to utilize LIFT After Breast Cancer to lead a global movement, empowering every woman to feel confident in the skin she is in.
Looking ahead, Dr. Michele’s goal for LIFT After Breast Cancer is to expand their reach and impact: creating more opportunities for survivors to connect, grow, and thrive; developing even more tailored programs that address the unique challenges faced by high-achieving women; and offering them the tools and supportive community they need to lead fulfilling, empowered lives after breast cancer. Additionally, she is focused on amplifying their advocacy efforts to shift the narrative around breast cancer survivorship, moving beyond the focus on survival to one of thriving and embracing life with renewed purpose.
As a licensed mental health therapist with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Michele has seen firsthand how breast cancer doesn’t just affect a woman’s body—it can take a significant toll on her mind and spirit. Therefore, she encourages breast cancer survivors to prioritize their mental health by engaging in mindfulness practices such as meditation and journaling, seeking therapy or counseling, and surrounding themselves with supporting people to uplift them.
To emphasize this message, Dr. Michele will be launching two empowering books. In her first book, How to Get Rid of Your Stinkin’ Thinkin’ in 30 Days: The ONLY Daily TRANSFORMATIONAL Guide You Will EVER Need to Live a Happy and Successful Life, Dr. Michele penned a culmination of her experiences as a therapist, offering a practical guide
EVERYONE’S JOURNEY IS DIFFERENT, AND IT’S IMPORTANT TO RESPECT
YOUR LOVED ONE’S FEELINGS AND DECISIONS, EVEN IF THEY DIFFER FROM WHAT YOU MIGHT EXPECT.
rooted in cognitive-behavioral principles. Its core message for readers is that by managing their thoughts, they can significantly impact their feelings, behaviors, and overall quality of life. Each chapter is designed to be read daily, filled with anecdotes, real-life experiences, and actionable steps to help readers live more fulfilling lives by changing their thinking patterns. As the saying goes,
“Life is 10% of what happens to us and 90% of how we respond.”
Dr. Michele’s second book, Living, Inspired, Free & Transformed After Breast Cancer, is inspired by her journey and countless women who refuse to let breast cancer define them. It’s a guide to help survivors live boldly and authentically, no matter what challenges they’ve faced.
In the same way that she turned her experiences into advocacy and a pursuit of her passions, Dr. Michele challenges breast cancer survivors to do the same through the following words of advice:
1. Own Your Story: Your journey is unique and has the power to inspire and uplift others. Don’t be afraid to share your experiences—whether through
writing, speaking, or simply connecting with others one-on-one.
2. Find Your Cause: Identify a cause that resonates with you and use your voice to drive change. Whether it’s raising awareness, supporting research, or mentoring others, your advocacy can make a significant impact. Remember, every small effort contributes to the larger fight against breast cancer.
3. Explore New Passions: Engaging in activities that bring you joy, and fulfillment helps rebuild a sense of purpose. Whether it’s a new hobby, skill, or passion, these pursuits can ignite a newfound zest for life.
Dr. Michele’s strong emphasis on community extends to those who support loved ones through breast cancer treatment and recovery, and allies who desire to offer support, citing that they can make a world of difference. For these supports, who she refers to as “Super Supporters”, she offers some practical tips:
1. Be present: Sometimes, the best support is just being there, whether it’s to listen, offer a shoulder to cry on, or share a laugh.
2. Offer practical help: Whether it’s cooking a meal, driving them to appointments, or helping with household chores, these gestures can be incredibly helpful.
3. Respect their feelings: Everyone’s journey is different, and it’s important to respect your loved one’s feelings and decisions, even if they differ from what you might expect.
4. Encourage self-care: Remind them of the importance of taking care of their mental and emotional health and offer to join them in activities that promote well-being.
5. Stay informed: Educate yourself about breast cancer so you can better understand what they’re going through and provide more empathetic support.
We were happy to feature Dr. Michele D. Clark, LMSW, who is keen on inspiring, uplifting and motivating others with the story of her journey and the lessons she learned along the way. In her own words, she reminds breast cancer thrivers: “your journey will be tough, but you are tougher.”

There is nothing more profound than having a friend who loves and cares for you in all aspects of your life. Even greater than this is having a friend who will pray for your prosperity—a true goldmine. As I reflect on John’s heartfelt words, I am reminded of the power of prayer and the strength it brings to relationships. In a world that breeds isolation and overwhelming situations, a praying friend is a priceless treasure. This type of friendship goes beyond mere companionship; it becomes a spiritual partnership that uplifts, sustains, and sometimes pushes you into greatness.
Imagine the warmth and comfort Gaius must have felt upon receiving John’s letter. Knowing someone deeply cares for your success can be highly motivating. Brotherly encouragement can push you to strive for greater heights. Here, John shows us that others’ encouragement can also bridge the gap to your prosperity. This encouragement challenges you to continue in your quest of seeking God— who is the giver of all things (John 3:27). It causes you to live to win and to win as you live. But as much as we desire things to flow in the winning direction in our lives, it should not exclude our health or our spirituality.
This scripture reminds us of how much good health matters. What’s the point of prosperity if your health prevents you from enjoying it? What is the value of parts of you prospering, as other parts stay stagnate? That’s deep, isn’t it? We often prioritize possessions over self-care. We forget to take care of the bodies God has given to us as our earthly vehicles. We neglect the fact that as we move from grace to grace, level to level, things change.
So, last year, I purchased a Porsche. It wasn’t my chosen car, just the dealership’s selection. Well, I soon discovered this car requires premium fuel unlike my old one. I could not just roll up to the station and push the unleaded button; it required the most expensive gas at the station. Believe me, I’m going somewhere with this. I realized that with car-prosperity came extra expenses. As I climbed the vehicle
ladder, my expenses rose accordingly. This car’s maintenance and care cost tripled that of my previous vehicle. What am I getting at? I’m trying to show you that as God prospers you, you have to make changes you may not have been prepared for, knowledgeable about, or expecting. Those who have been given much also have great responsibilities (Luke 12:48).
In 3 John 1:2, John assists Gaius in understanding that mere material prosperity is insufficient; one must also strive for prosperity in all areas of life. We desire more, but we must remember that more of anything requires us to make adjustments to meet the new level. The more God blesses you to get wealth, it is important that you lack in nothing. His desire for you is that your body and spirit are also in alignment with the blessing. Let’s not solely pursue wealth as our definition of prosperity. Do not allow good health to slip by us, as we enjoy things that bring us
BELOVED, I WISH ABOVE ALL THINGS THAT THOU MAYEST PROSPER AND BE IN HEALTH, EVEN AS THY SOUL PROSPERETH.
3
JOHN 1:2 (KJV).
pleasure. We also must not be so focused on gaining spiritual insight that we forget to actively seek good health benefits like those gained in our food choices. Trust me, this is not about judgment. I have no room to judge others because I have just recently discovered how important health prosperity is. I’ve made bad food choices and ignored God’s delicious treats for our well-being. I indulged in excessive sugar, realizing some things prioritize pleasure over prosperity. Thank God for repentance and for fresh revelation and manna from heaven to cause us to recognize how important it is to make good food and life choices.
Life’s journey teaches us that genuine prosperity extends beyond wealth (money) or material possessions (things), but in the holistic well-being of our body, mind, and spirit. John’s words to Gaius remind us of the importance of cherishing a balanced life where we value health and spiritual growth as much as earthly success. As we navigate our own paths, may we seek friends who uplift us, embrace the power of prayer, and strive for a harmonious prosperity that enriches every aspect of our lives. In doing so, we fulfill God’s desire for us to thrive wholly and abundantly, honoring the gifts He has given us.

Is it going to happen? How many times have you prayed, imagined, and spoken about your dream, yet still wonder if it will ever come to pass?
If your dream isn’t dead, don’t bury it. Speak life into it! Resist the urge to let doubt and discouragement take root. Instead, declare God’s blessings over it and expect a divine outcome. Remember, what you sow into your dream—whether faith or fear—is what you’ll reap.
Be honest with yourself: is this your dream, or someone else’s? Is this part of God’s plan for your life? If the answer is yes, then have unwavering faith in God’s timing and purpose.
Your dream is yours to fulfill. No one else can carry it but you. Yes, help will come along the way, but the journey, the triumphs, and even the challenges are yours to navigate. This is your “baby,” and it’s your responsibility to nurture it to full development.
Here are some essential tips as you move
forward, with purpose and determination, toward making your dream a reality:
1. Waiting is part of the process. We all dislike waiting, but this is where patience is developed. It stretches you and reveals the strength within.
2. Put your dream in writing. Be specific and clear. Recording your dream allows you to map out actionable steps for its fulfillment.
3. Timing is everything. Not just any timing—God’s timing. Seek guidance from the Holy Spirit. If He’s called you, He’s already equipped you with everything you need.
4. Do your research. Arm yourself with the knowledge needed to move forward. The internet and other resources are filled with invaluable information.
5. Benchmark against the best. Learn from those who are succeeding in your field, but don’t be afraid to break new ground and set trends.
6. Ask for help. Don’t let gaps in your knowledge discourage you. Approach experts or organizations that can guide you toward success.
7. Stay away from negative influences.
Surround yourself with those who support and believe in your dream, not those who will talk you out of it.
8. Develop a plan. Set clear goals with timelines to ensure consistent progress toward your dream.
9. Pursue your dream boldly. Dare to chase it with courage and conviction.
10. Take decisive action. Move forward with purpose, brick by brick, step by step, in faith and prayer.
11. Stay enthusiastic. Passion will carry you through tough times. Keep pressing forward, even when things don’t go as planned.
12. Guard your words. Take control of negative thoughts. Stay hopeful and trust God—He will bring it to pass.
13. Celebrate every milestone. Every step forward is an achievement. Take time to acknowledge the progress you’ve made along the way.
In everything, pursue excellence. Ask God for the strength, perseverance, and joy to chase your dream. So, what are you waiting for? Ready. Set. Go. And remember—you are Victorious By Design!

Dr. Tiffany Coleman-McGee, known to the world as Miz Tiffany, is a multi-talented force in the entertainment industry. Through a dynamic career that encompasses music, acting, modeling, and motivational speaking, Miz Tiffany has firmly established herself as an influential Christian hip-hop artist. Miz Tiffany hasn’t just broken into a male-dominated genre—she has become a trailblazer, paving the way for other women to embrace their calling in gospel rap. Her artistry is rooted in her faith, with each performance, song, and project designed to uplift and inspire others.
In her candid and engaging interview with VBD Magazine, Miz Tiffany offered profound insights into her journey, faith, challenges, and successes. She spoke with passion about how her relationship with God has been the guiding force behind both her personal and professional achievements. Her authenticity and openness reinforced that her mission extends beyond entertainment—it’s about making a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Miz Tiffany made history as the first female solo rap artist to be nominated for a Stellar Gospel Music Award for Rap/Hip Hop Gospel CD of the Year with her debut album, I Ain’t Preaching to the Choir. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, she shares, “I was honored, but it was also a signal that God was using me to break barriers in the gospel rap space.” Her groundbreaking nomination paved the way for other female artists in the genre.
Her most recent accolades include the 2023 Celebrity Artist of the Year Award at the MultiFace France International Celebrity Awards in Paris and the Best Hip Hop and Impact Honoree Music Award at the Antigua Barbuda Gospel Music Awards. Miz Tiffany is not only celebrated for her music but also for her community service and volunteer work, which earned her the prestigious Presidential Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award under President Joe Biden’s administration. “Giving back is not just something I do; it’s who I am. I know what it’s like to need help, and I want to be that help for others,” she says.
Surprisingly, gospel rap was not Miz Tiffany’s initial goal. She began her music career at a young age, writing poetry and songs before transitioning into secular rap. However, a life-changing car accident altered her perspective and direction. Miz Tiffany recounts, “I was in a coma for three days after the accident. Doctors told my mother I was brain dead, but God had other plans. When I recovered, I knew I couldn’t go back to what I was doing before. I had to use my talent for His glory.”
It was through this divine intervention that Miz Tiffany embraced her calling to gospel rap. After years away from music, she felt God calling her back— this time with a message. “I prayed and asked God, ‘What would you have me do?’ And the answer was clear: I was to spread the gospel through music. That’s when Miz Tiffany the Christian hip hop artist was born.”
Miz Tiffany’s career is not confined to music. She is also an accomplished actress, having appeared in well-known TV series such as Empire, Queen Sugar, and NCIS-New Orleans. “Acting was a natural extension of what I was already doing,” she explains. Her success in this field has landed her a lead role in the forthcoming faith-based film, Shield: By His Grace. Additionally, she has made a name for herself as a model, motivational speaker, and author of several children’s books.
Despite her wide range of talents, Miz Tiffany emphasizes the importance of time management and staying grounded. “One gift stirred the other. I didn’t plan to become a model or actress, but doors opened, and I walked through them. It’s about making sure you’re walking through the right doors—the ones God has opened for you.”
Her ability to manage her various roles stems from a strong foundation in faith and family. As a mother of three, Miz Tiffany is diligent about ensuring her family is well cared for before stepping into her many roles. “I take care of home first. That’s my priority. When home is in order, everything else falls into place.”
As a GRAMMY U mentor, Miz Tiffany is passionate about mentoring the next generation of artists. “Artists reach out to me all the time because they see what I’ve accomplished. I tell them, ‘Do the work, stay informed, and most importantly, stay true to who you are.’” She provides guidance, resources, and encouragement to young rappers and musicians, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and faith in their journey.
Miz Tiffany’s mentorship extends beyond music. Her community outreach efforts focus on early childhood literacy and youth empowerment. Through her involvement in schools and community events, she works to instill hope and confidence in young people, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. “I know what it’s like to grow up without having everything you need, so I want to be a resource for others,” she says.
In August 2024, Miz Tiffany in collaboration with Jimmy Hunt released a new single titled Pressure, a song that explores the concept of resilience through faith. “There’s a purpose for pressure,” she explains. “God allows us to go through situations that test
us, but it’s in those moments that we grow closer to Him. The song is about pushing through life’s challenges and coming out stronger on the other side.”
From overcoming personal hardships to achieving unprecedented success in the gospel rap industry, Miz Tiffany exemplifies the strength and grace that come from faith. “Every award, every accolade is a reminder of God’s promises. They’re not just achievements; they’re gifts from Him.”
In 2023, Miz Tiffany showcased her entrepreneurial spirit with the launch of “Miz Tiffany’s All-Purpose Southern Rub.” As part of a collaboration with six other Christian Hip Hop artists and Faith & Spice, powered by Valido Foods, she joined in commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop. This unique partnership led to the creation of the first-ever Kingdom Hip Hop Spice Bundle, featuring her signature seasoning. The rub highlights her Southern roots and demonstrates her ability to blend her creativity with business ventures, giving fans a flavorful way to connect with her beyond music.
Miz Tiffany is focused on expanding her reach through new music, books, and mentorship programs. She is working on a new album that promises to continue the legacy she has built in gospel hip hop. “I want to keep spreading the gospel through music, but I also want to do more. I’m working on writing more books and opening a group home for young girls in foster care. There’s so much more that God has in store.”
Even though she has over 40 awards and counting, Miz Tiffany remains humble and driven by her faith. “At the end of the day, it’s not about the awards or the recognition. It’s about fulfilling the purpose that God has for me and using my gifts to make a difference in the world.” As she continues to break barriers and make history, Miz Tiffany serves as a powerful reminder that with God, all things are possible.
by Kay Johnson-Clennon TRACI HATCHETT’S MASTERY IN EVENT PLANNING
Traci Hatchett’s entrepreneurial journey is rooted in her passion for bringing people together and creating unforgettable experiences. What began as a hobby—organizing gatherings for family and friends—evolved into a full-fledged career. “Years ago, I discovered my talent and passion for event planning while organizing gatherings for my loved ones,” Traci shares. This realization, combined with her innate creativity and eye for design, led her to co-found Hatchett Events, LLC, in 2013, alongside her husband, David.
Traci’s leap into the world of event planning was driven by a desire to help others celebrate life’s milestones in style. Over the past decade, she has organized and managed over 200 events, from weddings and baby showers to corporate conferences and themed parties. Her business is built on the simple yet powerful mission: “Plan to Impress!” This tagline encapsulates the essence of Hatchett Events—delivering memorable experiences that engage all five senses and leave a lasting impression.
At Hatchett Events, creativity is not just a buzzword; it’s a way of life. Traci and her team are known for their ability to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. The company’s mission is straightforward: to bring every detail of a client’s event vision to life with elegance and excellence. This commitment to detail is what sets Hatchett Events apart in a crowded industry.
“We dedicate time to comprehend the client’s vision for the event and guarantee that we engage all five senses—sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch—for a memorable guest experience,” Traci explains. Traci ensures that each event Hatchett Events designs is a true reflection of the individuals it honors. This involves understanding the client’s vision, crafting bespoke decor, tailoring menus, and even designing unique stationery and signage. The result is a one-of-akind celebration that resonates with all participants.
One of the core philosophies at Hatchett Events is the importance of personalization. “Personalization in event planning is no longer just a trend but a necessity in today’s world where unique experiences are greatly appreciated,” Traci asserts. “It is important to recognize that every event mirrors the personal narratives and aspirations of our clients. Whether you are organizing a wedding, a significant birthday celebration, or a corporate gala, customization is crucial for crafting a significant and memorable occasion.”
In addition to her work with Hatchett Events, Traci has expanded her brand into the culinary world through her blog, “Food & Entertaining with Traci.” This venture started as a quarterly digital magazine titled Design, Decorate & Celebrate, which focused on home entertainment tips. In 2022, the magazine transitioned into a blog, allowing Traci to share her passion for food, recipes, and DIY entertainment with a broader audience.
“Hosting gatherings at home has always brought me joy,” says Traci. The blog reflects this joy, offering readers everything from vegetarian recipes to themed tablescapes. It also integrates seamlessly with Hatchett Events, as Traci’s expertise in food and entertainment enhances the services her company offers, particularly in catering for small-scale events.
The event planning industry is not without its challenges, and Traci has faced her fair share. One of the most common obstacles is budget constraints, which can limit spending on key aspects like venues, catering, and decor. However, Traci’s meticulous approach to planning ensures that her clients’ visions are realized, even within tight budgets.
“We collaborate closely with the client to plan event costs meticulously,” Traci explains. This includes gathering cost estimates from vendors early in the planning process and using previous event budgets to identify areas for improvement. By assessing budget modifications carefully, Hatchett Events avoids surprises and ensures that each event stays on track both financially and logistically.
In the world of event planning, unpredictability is the only constant. Traci has developed strategies for handling unexpected challenges with grace and professionalism. “Remain calm and adaptable,” she advises. “Prepare a backup plan, analyze the scenario, communicate effectively, and seek assistance if needed.”
These strategies have served her well in her career, allowing her to navigate even the most complex situations with confidence. Traci’s ability to stay composed under pressure is one of the many qualities that make her a standout in the industry.
In an industry that is constantly evolving, staying current with trends is crucial. Traci is committed to keeping her finger on the pulse of the latest developments in event design and food entertainment. She follows industry experts, attends trade shows and conferences, and actively experiments with new ideas. “I
creatively integrate my findings into my work, whether it be a recipe or a beautiful tablescape design,” she says.
This dedication to innovation is evident in every project Hatchett Events undertakes. From incorporating the latest decor trends to experimenting with new culinary techniques, Traci ensures that her events are always fresh, modern, and uniquely tailored to her clients’ tastes.
Traci’s experience as an event planner has also informed her work as an author. Her first book, Be the Host with the Most! Hosting Dinner Parties with Ease, is a reflection of her years of experience in entertainment and event planning. The book offers readers practical advice on hosting, with a focus on making the process enjoyable and stress-free.
Writing is a creative outlet for Traci, and she has developed a routine to balance her literary pursuits with the demands of running a business. “I designate a specific day each week for writing,” she notes, adding that she also uses travel time to work on her books. This disciplined approach allows her to maintain her creative output while managing the day-to-day operations of Hatchett Events.
For those just starting in the event planning industry, Traci offers invaluable advice: Get an education, define your specialization, and seek mentorship. She emphasizes the importance of gaining experience in specific types of events and building a strong portfolio to showcase your skills.
Traci also encourages aspiring planners to volunteer at local events and to continuously hone their craft by staying informed about industry trends. “Dedicate time every

COMBINING FAITH, FAMILY, AND FILM TO INSPIRE GENERATIONS

Chuck and Bree West, the powerhouse husband-andwife team behind OCTET Productions, bring a level of passion, precision, and authenticity to their craft that makes their work stand out in the film and television industry. Chuck, as president, chief executive officer, executive producer, and showrunner, alongside Bree, chief creative officer, executive producer, producer, writer, director, and showrunner, have spent nearly a decade crafting films that elevate authentic narratives, resonating deeply with audiences worldwide.
The Wests are visionary storytellers and advocates for reshaping the portrayal of Black families on screen. Through their work, they have crafted culturally rich narratives that celebrate the beauty and complexity of Black family life, while challenging stereotypes and redefining how legacy and culture are represented. Every challenge they’ve faced has become an opportunity for growth and innovation. Their approach to storytelling transcends entertainment, they create narratives that leave a lasting impact and inspire meaningful change.
In an exclusive interview with VBD Magazine, Chuck and Bree shared their journey, from their individual successes to building OCTET Productions into an international film production company that feels more like a family than a business. Their candid reflections revealed not only the secrets behind their creative synergy but also their deep-rooted dedication to family, faith, and legacy, which is at the core of all they do. Their journey reminds us that when we combine vision, passion, and faith, we create stories that matter.
Chuck received his education at American University, where he distinguished himself both academically and athletically. During his time there, Chuck earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance with a concentration in Accounting, laying the groundwork for his future career in the entertainment industry. His academic achievements were complemented by his prowess on the basketball court, where he became a member of the university’s
prestigious 1000-point scoring club. This combination of financial acumen and athletic discipline would later prove invaluable in his professional life.
Bree’s academic journey took her from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. For her undergraduate studies, she attended two prestigious institutions in Philadelphia: Bryn Mawr College and the University of Pennsylvania. After completing her college education, Bree returned to her roots and pursued a law degree at Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. This legal education laid the foundation for her initial career path. However, Bree’s professional tra-
OUR FAITH IS OUR FOUNDATION. WE WOULDN’T BE WHERE WE ARE WITHOUT GOD’S DIRECTION, AND WE MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING WE DO ALIGNS WITH HIS PLAN FOR US. WE WOULDN’T BE WHERE WE ARE WITHOUT GOD’S DIRECTION, AND WE MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING WE DO ALIGNS WITH HIS PLAN FOR US.
jectory evolved over time, transitioning from a legal career to talent management, and ultimately leading her to successful positions in the entertainment industry.
The word “family” truly captures the essence of Chuck and Bree. They come from the rich cultural backdrop of Prince George’s County, Maryland, a place known for its proud history of African American achievements. Bree, the creative half of OCTET, recalls growing up in a home where love and support flowed freely. “I grew up with my mother, father, grandmother, and great-grandparents all under one roof. It was chaotic at times, but I always felt surrounded by love,” she says. Chuck fondly remembers growing up in a close-knit community that instilled in him the importance of perseverance and education.
Chuck and Bree’s paths crossed later in life, but their union brought together not only two individuals but also two large families. Bree’s four daughters, along with Chuck’s two biological sons and two nephews who were raised as brothers, formed what Bree affectionately calls their “modern-day Black Brady Bunch, blended to perfection!”
“When I met Chuck, I knew we had something special, but we had to figure out how to make it work with our careers
and this large family we were building,” Bree shares. And make it work they did.
In 2015, Chuck and Bree founded OCTET Productions, a nod to their eight children. The name OCTET, derived from the Latin word for eight, represents their blended family and symbolizes infinity, a fitting metaphor for their endless creativity, commitment to each other, and God’s love that has no ending or beginning.
Before co-founding OCTET Productions, Chuck was a nationally acclaimed producer with extensive experience in Broadway, urban theater, and the film industry. Chuck had been traveling extensively, touring stage plays with his childhood friend David E. Talbert, when Bree gave him an ultimatum: “If we’re going to make this work, you need to stay home more.” With their shared background in business and entertainment, starting their own production company seemed like the perfect solution.
True too, OCTET Productions was born from the couple’s desire to take control of their creative vision. The duo shares how they were initially involved in a production where the final result didn’t live up to their expectations. “We were part of a project where we felt the story wasn’t told authentically,” Bree recalls.
“I asked Chuck, ‘How can we make sure this doesn’t happen again?’ He said, ‘We have to do it ourselves.’ Today, OCTET Productions is a full-service international production company, based in the District of Columbia.
What makes OCTET Productions stand out isn’t just the quality of their films but the family-first environment they’ve created on every set. “We treat every production like a family reunion,” says Chuck. “Everyone is a star at OCTET Productions. We don’t believe in a hierarchy where only the lead actors or executive producers are treated well. From the interns and production assistants to the director, everyone is treated with love and respect.”
This familial approach has earned Chuck and Bree a reputation for creating cohesive, positive work environments. Bree explains, “When people feel appreciated
WE ARE ONE PEOPLE, SCATTERED ACROSS DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS. IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US TO SHOW THAT CONNECTION IN OUR FILMS AND TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION.
and connected, they produce their best work. It’s important to us that everyone who works on our projects feels like part of the OCTET family.” This commitment to fostering relationships has translated into the success of films like A Wesley Christmas, which garnered two NAACP Image Award nominations.
AUTHENTICITY IN STORYTELLING
Chuck and Bree are committed to telling stories that reflect authentic Black experiences. Bree has always been passionate about ensuring the stories OCTET Productions tells are real and relatable. “We’re not interested in the stereotypical portrayals of Black families,” she asserts. “Our films showcase Black excellence, love, and the challenges that come with both. We want people to see themselves in our characters—whether they’re celebrating Christmas or navigating life’s obstacles.”
Chuck adds, “Our goal has always been to show Black families in a positive light, while still addressing the real challenges we face. It’s important for us to create content that not only entertains but also uplifts and inspires.”
OCTET’s early successes include theatrical film productions like You Can’t Hurry Love, starring LaTarsha Rose, Essence Atkins, Richard Brooks, and Victoria Rowell, as well as Addicted To
You, featuring Letoya Luckett, Brely Evans, and Thomas Q. Jones. Both projects premiered on the Urban Movie Channel (now ALLBLK) and were later licensed to BET Networks. Their first feature film, Couples’ Night, starring Charles Malik Whitfield, Regan Gomez, Denise Boutte, Tony Rock, and Clifton Powell, also premiered on Urban Movie Channel and went on to be distributed in the United Kingdom and across Africa.
OCTET Productions continued its momentum with The Lost Soul’s Café for TVOne, starring Loretta Devine, Christian Keyes, Kiki Haynes, Ernest Thomas, wand Major. The Wests have produced projects in key entertainment hubs like the DMV, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, with premieres on platforms such as ALLBLK, TVOne, and BET. Additionally, OCTET collaborated with The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, led by Taraji P. Henson, to produce the foundation’s first mental health conference in Washington, DC.
One of the goals of OCTET Productions is to bridge the gap between African
Americans and the African diaspora. “We are one people, scattered across different geographical locations,” Bree says passionately. “It’s important for us to show that connection in our films and to create opportunities for collaboration.”
The couple’s project, A Wesley Christmas, starring Dorien Wilson, Jasmine Guy, TC Carson, Loren Lott, and an exceptional ensemble cast, became a runaway success. Its heartwarming portrayal of Black family life, combined with impeccable storytelling and high production value, set it apart. The film’s popularity led to two sequels: A Wesley Christmas Wedding and the upcoming A Wesley South African Christmas, which will showcase the cultural beauty of South Africa while continuing the Wesley family’s story. A Wesley Christmas Wedding was selected as number 11 on IMDB’s Top 50 Overall Best Christmas Movies of 2023. A Wesley South African Christmas will premiere on BET+ this November.
In March 2024, OCTET Productions journeyed to Durban, South Africa to
film A Wesley South African Christmas, co-written by Bree West. This groundbreaking film marks the first time an African American family is united on screen with a Zulu South African family, celebrating the holidays and their shared cultures in the KZN region. OCTET also integrated a blended crew and production team, further elevating the project’s global reach. While on location, Bree received the exciting news that OCTET’s hit series HUSH on ALLBLK had been renewed for a third season.
Bree describes the experience of filming in South Africa as life-changing. “We employed over 400 South Africans on this project, and it was such a beautiful collaboration,” she shares. “Our goal is to show that Black filmmakers can come together from different parts of the world and create something magical.”
This global approach is a hallmark of OCTET Productions. The couple has also engaged in conversations with The Honorable Edmund Bartlett, CD, MP, the Minister of Tourism in Jamaica, regarding
creating future opportunities in Jamaica. “We’re always thinking about how we can use our platform to open doors for others,” Chuck adds.
Chuck and Bree are unapologetic about how their Christian faith guides both their personal and professional lives. “We start every production day with prayer,” says Chuck. “We invite everyone on set to join us, but it’s never forced. For us, it’s about giving thanks to God and asking for His guidance as we tell these stories.”
Bree adds, “Our faith is our foundation. We wouldn’t be where we are without God’s direction, and we make sure that everything we do aligns with His plan for us. We believe that when you honor God in everything you do, He opens doors that no man can close.”
With over twenty-five film credits to their name, Chuck and Bree are dedicated to creating impactful content and deeply committed to education. OCTET Productions ensures that with each project, students in the DMV area and beyond are given hands-on opportunities to shadow company leaders and gain experience in
various departments of the production process, nurturing the next generation of filmmakers.
“We believe in lifting as we climb,” Bree explains. “Whether it’s bringing interns onto our film sets or creating exchange programs between U.S. and South African students, we want to use our platform to help the next generation.”
Chuck agrees, adding, “We were blessed with mentors and opportunities, and it’s our responsibility to pay that forward. We want to make sure that young Black filmmakers don’t face the same obstacles we did when we started.”
As Chuck and Bree continue to build on their legacy, they show no signs of slowing down. Most recently, Chuck and Bree’s independent film A Kismet Holiday, won the Jury Award for Best Narrative at the 2024 Essence Film Festival. In addition, the Wests just finished shooting another independent project starring Lil Rel Howery entitled The Class Reunion, a project they describe as a modern spin on the 1980’s classic The Breakfast Club. Chuck and Bree also serve as panelist, lecturers for high schools and universities and mentors to number of upcoming filmmakers. Cur-
rently, they are working on a slate of new projects, including a collaboration with a husband-and-wife bestselling authors team. They are also in talks to film in Jamaica and Mauritius, expanding their global footprint even further.
But no matter where their journey takes them, Chuck and Bree remain committed to telling authentic, heartfelt stories that reflect the Black experience. “We’re just getting started,” Bree says with a smile. “There are so many more stories to tell, and we can’t wait to share them with the world.”
As for their legacy, Bree sums it up best: “We want to be remembered as storytellers who honored God, loved their family, and made a difference in the lives of others.”
OCTET Productions is transforming the film and television industry while empowering communities, bridging cultures, and creating opportunities for future generations. With a growing catalog of films and an unwavering commitment to excellence, Chuck and Bree West are leaving an indelible mark on both the industry and society.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith is no stranger to challenges, but her response to them has always been rooted in faith and purpose. As an accomplished lecturer specializing in disaster risk management at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, she has spent nearly a decade contributing to environmental research and solutions. But Dr. Smith’s passion doesn’t end in the classroom or with her research; her journey through illness and recovery has placed her on a path to inspire others to activate their faith during life’s toughest battles. Her recent book, NOT MY WILL LORD, BUT YOURS BE DONE: Activating Faith in Times of Sickness, is evidence of the power of faith in the face of adversity.
VBD Magazine is honored to feature Dr. Smith, who embodies strength, faith, and service. In her interview, Dr. Smith discusses how faith carried her through the toughest moments of her life, her approach to blending academic rigor with personal conviction, and the ways she hopes to inspire others through her writing and teaching. “I’ve come to realize that it’s through life’s trials that we truly grasp the meaning of faith, and it’s not as simple as just saying “have faith.” Activating faith is much more challenging in practice,” Dr. Smith shares. Her commitment to both academic excellence and spiritual growth continues to inspire those who meet her.
After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Geography with First Class Honors from the University of the West Indies in 2008, Dr. Smith went on to complete her Ph.D. in 2015. “I never imagined reaching this point, being the first and only one in my family at this level. Yet, I’ve seen God’s hand guiding every step and every encounter with those essential to my journey,” she reflects. Her academic success paved the way for her to specialize in disaster risk management, a field where her expertise is highly sought after.
“My passion for disaster risk management began in undergrad when I became in-
trigued by how natural hazards disproportionately impact vulnerable communities. This fueled my drive to research and teach in an area where I could make a tangible difference,” Dr. Smith reveals.
Dr. Smith’s success did not come without challenges. “Too many challenges to count,” she admits. Growing up in poverty in a home marked by domestic abuse and an alcoholic father, she faced financial, psychological, and social hardships. “I struggled with low self-esteem and confidence, but I was always at the top of my class,” she recalls. Despite excelling academically, financial struggles nearly derailed her dream of attending university. “I didn’t have money for school or exams, but I kept pushing.”
Through a government program for economically disadvantaged students, she was able to attend university. “That was my first step toward breaking the cycle of poverty. It wasn’t easy, but I had developed a warrior spirit by then.”
When asked how she thrives during challenging times, Dr. Smith’s answer is simple: “I pray—a lot. The way my life has aligned can only be attributed to divine intervention. I’ve faced challenges that have broken others, but I’m where I am because of God’s grace.”
Dr. Smith also emphasizes the importance of asking for help. “Even as Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, I’m not too proud to seek help when needed. That’s part of how I’ve made it through.”
Despite her academic focus, Dr. Smith’s love for writing has been a constant throughout her life. “Oh, wow! I’ve always loved writing from an early age,” she recalls. “Back then, I wasn’t published, but I wrote short stories and poetry— mostly romantic or cultural pieces.” Her passion for storytelling grew alongside her academic career, but it wasn’t until later that she ventured into authorship.
Her first published book, The Day I Became a Hurricane, is a children’s book inspired by her expertise in disaster management. “I wanted to educate kids about hazards in a creative and engaging way,” she explains. Dr. Smith has also written two unpublished works in the same field, with one ready for publication and the other in the refinement stage. But her writing interests extend beyond academia. “I also enjoy writing romance and faith-based books, and I’m eager to see many of my unpublished manuscripts in bookstores one day.”
Dr. Smith describes her writing process as organic and spontaneous. “I generally don’t follow a strict outline. The story often just comes to me,” she says. For example, she notes that her first children’s book was written in about an hour. “People are always amazed at how well it turned out, but some of my best writing comes in this way.”
Her manuscript, From the Ashes We Rise: A Tale of the Carib People, was inspired by the volcanic eruption in her birth country, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in 2021. “After immersing myself in reading and watching videos about the event, the story just flowed naturally.”
Dr. Smith’s recent release, however, was much more challenging to write. NOT MY WILL LORD, BUT YOURS BE DONE: Activating Faith in Times of Sickness , inspired by her battle with breast cancer, forced her to grapple with questions of faith. “There were days I couldn’t write because I was waiting for answers from God,” she admits. “I had to wrestle with questions like, ‘Why do Christians who
pray for healing still die?’” These spiritual challenges made the process more complex, but ultimately more fulfilling.
“My latest book is my first spiritual work. It was tough to write, but it was incredibly fulfilling because it allowed me to share my testimony and encourage others in their faith. Faith is something I’ve always questioned—what does it really mean? And through this experience, the Lord laid it on my heart to write this book.”
In writing NOT MY WILL LORD, BUT YOURS BE DONE: Activating Faith in Times of Sickness, Dr. Smith learned to let go of control. “Breast cancer isn’t something you can just take a pill for. It’s a diagnosis that feels like death is
looming. I was in a position where I had no choice but to rely on God,” she explains. Her biggest takeaway? “Faith isn’t about what I want, but about God’s will. Just like Jesus, I found myself saying, ‘Lord, take this cup away from me, but not my will—yours be done.’”
When it comes to aspiring authors, Dr. Smith is full of encouragement. “I believe there are many authors who have written but haven’t yet published. My advice is to learn about the publishing process, especially now with the rise of self-publishing.” She urges writers to let their voices be heard and to embrace their calling wholeheartedly. “Don’t be
afraid to put your work out there—there’s always someone who needs to hear what you have to say.”
While her career in academia and authorship keeps her busy, Dr. Smith is also passionate about motivational speaking. “This year, I’m committed to fully walking in my purpose,” she says. After being sought out for advice and receiving positive feedback from her Facebook Live sessions, Dr. Smith decided to step into the role of a motivational speaker. “I want to inspire others, especially young women, in various aspects of life.”
Her speaking engagements are fueled by a desire to encourage people to overcome obstacles and pursue their purpose with confidence. “I’ve been through a lot, and if my story can help someone else, then I’m walking in my purpose.”
As she looks ahead, Dr. Smith has no plans to slow down. “The Lord has already placed another book on my heart,” she reveals. While she waits for guidance on what to write next, she remains focused on establishing her brand as an author and motivational speaker. “I’m eager to see where this journey takes me, and I trust that whatever comes next will be aligned with God’s will for my life.”

With over forty titles to her name, award-winning Christian romance author Pat Simmons has captivated readers with her heartwarming tales of love, family, and faith. A self-proclaimed genealogy sleuth, Simmons often weaves the richness of her ancestral research into the core of her stories, giving readers not only romance but a deep sense of heritage and legacy. “I was a voracious romance reader because of the happy endings,” Pat shares, “but as a practicing Christian, the sex scenes and profanity were big turnoffs. Even skipping pages didn’t spare me from the images popping up during Sunday morning sermons. That’s when I decided to write a romance story rich with Godly inspiration. Guilty of Love was born.”
Pat’s leap of faith to create Christian romance that maintains the joy of love stories while staying true to biblical principles has filled a unique space in the genre. She has provided a refreshing alternative for readers seeking wholesome, faith-based narratives. Her books not only explore love between couples but also tackle real-life challenges such as forgiveness, redemption, and personal growth—all while handling these issues with grace. By doing so, Pat ensures that her characters’ journeys resonate with readers on both emotional and spiritual levels, making her stories both moving and impactful.
Over the years, Pat’s dedication to her craft has earned her numerous accolades. She is a five-time recipient of the RSJ Emma Rodgers Award for Best Inspirational Romance, winning for titles such as Still Guilty, Crowning Glory, The Confession, Christmas Dinner, and Queen’s Surrender
WRITE WITH COMPASSION, AND YOU WILL HAVE A WINNER. STAY TRUE TO YOUR FAITH AND WRITE STORIES THAT REFLECT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. IF YOU DO THAT, YOUR WRITING WILL HAVE A LASTING IMPACT.
(To A Higher Calling). Her first women’s fiction novel, Lean On Me, was selected as the February/March Together We Read Digital Book Club pick for the national library system. Additionally, her holiday release, Christmas Dinner, and her novel Here for You, were both featured in Woman’s World magazine. Here for You also made Sisters from AARP’s “7 Great Reads That Help to Keep the Faith” list.
In 2022, Pat was honored with the Leslie Esdaile “Trailblazer” Award by Building Relationships Around Books Readers’ Choice, a recognition of her impactful work in the Christian fiction genre. “Receiving the Trailblazer Award was such an honor,” she says. “It affirmed that my work is making a difference in the Christian fiction community.”
In her literary works, Pat balances romance and faith. “Number one, I want to draw readers to Christ,” she emphasizes. While
she crafts compelling love stories, she ensures that the spiritual messages are woven seamlessly into the narrative. “If they are already walking with the Lord, I want to encourage them to stay and overcome obstacles in their lives.” For Pat, romance and faith go hand in hand. It’s not just about the love between a man and a woman, but about God’s love and how that shapes every relationship.
When it comes to her writing process, Pat has developed a rhythm that works for her after sixteen years in the business. “That’s a manual in itself,” she jokes. She shares tidbits for aspiring writers on her website, including how to maintain creativity and motivation throughout the writing journey. One unlikely source of inspiration? K-dramas. “My husband has me watching K-dramas; some are very good, which sparks my creativity,” she reveals. But her true muse comes from observing the world around her. “I mostly watch people. You can learn a lot from their behavior and interactions.”
Pat’s novels often feature characters facing real-life challenges, from loss and betrayal to personal growth and redemption. But what sets her work apart is the way she integrates faith into these struggles. “I tackle topics to give readers hope,” she explains. “God expects us to live holy because He is holy, but my characters aren’t always at that point in their lives. I want my stories to be realistic parables that give readers hope to come to Christ.”
Her characters are relatable because they are flawed—just like all of us. They don’t always make the right choices, and they wrestle with their faith. Through their stories, Pat aims to provide readers with a sense of hope and encouragement, showing that no matter where they are in their journey, God is always there to guide them. Pat mentioned that the key to writing compelling Christian romance is staying true to her own walk with God. “Don’t write anything that would make you ashamed to stand before God,” she advises. She
also encourages writers to approach their stories with compassion, not judgment. “Write with compassion, and you will have a winner. Stay true to your faith and write stories that reflect your relationship with God. If you do that, your writing will have a lasting impact.”
One of Pat’s most beloved series, The Jamieson Legacy, reflects her love of romance, family genealogy, and her background in news. “The combination laid the groundwork for many of the themes I write about in the series,” she explains. The Jamieson family’s journey through fourteen books has resonated with readers who appreciate the love and strength of family ties, particularly those highlighting strong Black men and families. “I want readers to take away the importance of
family—how we support one another through good times and bad,” Pat says.
Pat is especially excited about the next generation of Jamiesons, as their stories will continue in her upcoming book, Accomplices in Love, which was released on September 13, 2024. “The children are growing up with their own set of problems,” she shares. While readers have come to love the Jamieson clan, they can also expect a spinoff series featuring their cousins, the Robnetts. “The genealogy continues, and readers will see how today’s challenges affect their relationships.”
Like many authors, Pat Simmons has faced her share of challenges. Balancing writing with life—family, church,
and personal commitments—has been a constant struggle. “That is another book,” she states. “I haven’t mastered it because something always has to take a backseat until deadlines are met.” Despite these challenges, Pat has accepted that she can’t do everything, and she’s learned to prioritize her time to avoid burnout. “I’m at the point where I accept, I can’t go, do, and join everything, or I’ll be stressed out.”
Her wisdom comes from experience, and it’s advice she passes on to aspiring authors. “Spend time with God every day in prayer, then read your Bible with the intent to study and get a message from God that He wants you to write about to minister to His people,” she says.
As Pat looks to the future, she continues to build on the success of her previous works. “Current projects include new books in the Jamieson Legacy series and The Intercessors, which is my spiritual warfare series that God inspired me to write,” she reveals. The latter series takes Pat out of her comfort zone, but she feels a strong calling to bring these stories to life. “These stories are from the mouth of God to paper. It’s been an incredible journey.”
With her upcoming releases and continued dedication to crafting stories that inspire faith and family, readers can look forward to more stories filled with love, hope, and the powerful presence of God.

As a visionary and written word enthusiast, Kareem Lee’s journey has been one of introspection and devotion to her divine calling. Her path as an author is deeply intertwined with her Christian faith and commitment to truth. In an interview with VBD Magazine, Kareem opens up about her inspiring journey, offering a glimpse into her creative process, the solid foundation upon which her work is built, and the enduring legacy she aspires to leave through her literary and publishing endeavors. Her work is deeply spiritual, it’s evidence of her faith, and, most importantly, it’s her gift to future generations.
Kareem’s author life began with a deep love for words and a natural inclination toward introspection. From a young age, she found solace in processing the world around her internally and expressing her thoughts through writing. This passion for the written word was nurtured by her mother and grandmother, who instilled in her a love for reading and reflection. Visits to bookstores with her mother and nightly Bible readings with her grandmother became the foundation of her literary journey.
Despite her initial hesitation to fully embrace the title of “author,” Kareem sees her writing as central to her divine purpose. Several prophetic words spoken over her life by different messengers have reinforced this calling. For Kareem, writing is not just a skill but a spiritual mandate—a way to fulfill her purpose and share the truth with the world. The scripture John 7:38, which speaks of “rivers of living water” flowing from within those who believe, has been a guiding force in her journey, reminding her of the life-giving power of faith and truth.
Each of Kareem’s works is anchored in scripture, with themes and concepts flowing from her life experiences and the lessons God has allowed her to learn. These experiences, whether divinely orchestrated or permitted, form the basis of her teachings and writings.
Her writings are not merely stories but tools for restoration and empowerment,
particularly for women. Through her nonprofit organization, Hummingbird Journeys, Kareem serves women on their restorative journey, helping them live victorious, Christ-centered lives. Her writings are a natural extension of this mission, delivering spiritual guidance and practical wisdom to those seeking healing and transformation.
One of Kareem’s most impactful works is The She Wins Devotional Journal, a book inspired by her own journey of loss and restoration. This devotional journal is a collection of reflections and evidence of the victorious mindset that Kareem has cultivated through her faith. The book is designed to encourage readers to anchor themselves in truth and recognize that, through Christ, they have everything they need to live a victorious life.
Kareem aims to empower readers of The She Wins Devotional Journal with an unshakable sense of victory and a deeper understanding of the power of truth. Her message is clear: by remaining anchored in Christ, we can overcome any obstacle and live in the fullness of God’s promises.
Kareem’s passion for truth extends beyond her writing and into the world of publishing. She founded Zaō Publishing with a clear mission: to create a platform dedicated solely to sharing truth. Owning her voice and message is paramount, and Zaō Publishing is the manifestation of this belief.
Zaō Publishing differentiates itself from other publishing houses by its unwavering commitment to truth. There are no hidden agendas or secondary motives; the sole purpose of Zaō Publishing is to equip and embolden women with the truth of God’s word. This commitment to truth is what sets Zaō Publishing apart in an industry that is often driven by trends and commercial interests.
Establishing Zaō Publishing was not without its challenges. Kareem encountered obstacles, particularly in cutting through the noise of the publishing industry and staying true to her original blueprint. However, her faith has been her anchor throughout this process. Whenever doubt arises, Kareem returns to the scripture that commissioned her work—John 7:38. This scripture not only holds her accountable but also reminds her of the divine mandate behind her work.
For Kareem, faith is not just an important aspect of her work; it is the foundation upon which everything is built. Every action, decision, and project is rooted in her faith in Christ. Without this truth, Kareem believes that her work would lack purpose and direction.
Through every word she writes, Kareem hopes to stir souls, leaving behind a legacy of truth that demonstrates strength and resilience to future generations. One of her favorite scriptures, Ephesians 6:13,
speaks to the importance of standing firm in the face of adversity. Kareem hopes that her work will inspire others to do the same, equipping them with the truth and resilience they need to navigate life’s challenges.
Through Zaō Publishing and her writing career, Kareem is committed to sharing the truth of God’s word and helping others live victorious lives. Her vision? A future where her work continues to impact and empower women, encouraging them to embrace their God-given purpose and stand firm in their faith.
Zaō Publishing has several upcoming projects that readers can look forward to. One of the most anticipated releases is In The Quiet, a book that has already received encouraging feedback from beta readers. Additionally, Has God Said, set to release in March 2025, promises to be another impactful addition to Zaō Publishing’s catalog.
Kareem is particularly enthusiastic about the devotionals and truth-based lifestyle items that will soon be available in Zaō Publishing’s online store. These resources are designed to help readers incorporate truth into every aspect of their lives, reinforcing the message that victory is possible through Christ. As she continues to write, publish, and inspire, Kareem is leaving a lasting legacy of truth, one that will impact generations to come.

As a bestselling author and now a literary agent, Michelle Lindo-Rice has crafted a career that combines creativity, mentorship, and cultural pride. With over twenty-five years of experience as an educator, Michelle honed her skills as a writer and editor. But it wasn’t just her own success that fueled her—it was the fulfillment she found in helping others grow. “I spent years learning about the craft of writing and became great at self-editing so I could produce a draft that would capture an agent’s interest,” Michelle explains. “During that process,
I passed on that knowledge to fellow authors, providing feedback on their work.”
In her interview with VBD Magazine , Michelle shares exciting insights about her journey from author to literary agent, the inspiration behind her stories, and the passion that drives her to open doors for other authors. “I realized there were a limited number of agents of color and wanted to create opportunities for other authors to achieve their publishing dreams. So, I pursued literary agenting,” she shares.
With upcoming book releases and her continued work in literary representation, Michelle Lindo-Rice is not only shaping stories, but also shaping the future of publishing, one author at a time.
FROM AUTHOR TO AGENT
In her role as a literary agent, Michelle is on the lookout for more than just good writing. “First, I am captured by a strong premise,” she explains. “Then it’s all about the pages. I love stories with great characterization and storytelling. I want to work with authors who have a strong support system and who are dedicated to writing.
Her experiences as an author give her a unique perspective when reviewing submissions. She knows firsthand how much effort goes into crafting a manuscript, which is why she is thoughtful in her approach.
“As an author, I know what it’s like to be in the query trenches. I know what it’s like to get passes when you’ve put your best into something. That’s why I thoughtfully consider each submission, give timely responses, and do my best to help authors accomplish their literary goals.”
Michelle’s dual role as both an author and agent allow her to approach the industry with a unique perspective—one that is grounded in both the art of storytelling and the business of publishing. Her dedication to nurturing new talent, especially from underrepresented voices, sets her apart.
“I love helping other authors,” she says. “There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing someone else’s dream come true.”
Balancing the roles of author and literary agent is no small feat, but Michelle
manages it with grace and discipline.
“Very carefully,” she mentions. “I have an assistant who helps keep me on track. But the key is balance and communication.”
When asked about current trends in the publishing industry, Michelle shares her perspective on navigating them. “I advise my clients to write from their heart.
AS AN AUTHOR, I KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE IN THE QUERY TRENCHES. I KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO GET PASSES WHEN YOU’VE PUT YOUR BEST INTO SOMETHING. THAT’S WHY I THOUGHTFULLY CONSIDER EACH SUBMISSION, GIVE TIMELY RESPONSES, AND DO MY BEST TO HELP AUTHORS ACCOMPLISH THEIR LITERARY GOALS.
Write what they want to write,” she says. “I know there are trends, but writing authentically is what matters most.”
For Michelle, time management is crucial to maintaining her responsibilities as an author while helping other authors succeed through LCS Literary Services. Whether she’s penning a new novel or guiding a client through the publishing process, Michelle’s focus remains on delivering the best for her readers and clients.
Michelle’s advice to aspiring authors is practical and grounded in experience. “Focus on building your knowledge of the craft and get a good support system— fellow authors who root for you and provide honest feedback on your work,” she states. “Having people cheering for you keeps you motivated. The writing world can be a lonely world, but with the right people around you, it becomes much easier.”
I HOPE THAT READERS WILL SEE THE LOVE AND BOND BETWEEN WOMEN AND HOW POWERFUL THAT IS, DESPITE ALL THE CHALLENGES THEY MIGHT FACE.
For those interested in being represented by her agency, LCS Literary Services, Michelle emphasizes the importance of perseverance and consistency. “Treat your writing like a business. Be consistent and keep going until you reach the finish line.”
As an author, Michelle wears two hats— or rather, two names. She writes under both Michelle Lindo-Rice and the pen name Zoey Marie Jackson, allowing her to explore different genres and connect with diverse readers. Under Zoey Marie Jackson, she creates heartwarming romances, while as Michelle Lindo-Rice, she focuses on more complex women’s fiction. “Zoey Marie Jackson writes romance and sweet stories that soothe your soul,” she explains. “Michelle Lindo-Rice writes romances and women’s fiction centered around friendships, family, and she’s not afraid to get a little bit spicy. Anything she wants, really, LOL.”
This dual identity provides her readers with a variety of stories that reflect the
many facets of love, faith, and human connection.
Michelle’s faith plays a central role in her writing. Whether writing as Zoey or Michelle, her goal is always to leave readers with a sense of hope. “I hope for all of my books to entertain but also leave readers with a sense of hope, which is a direct result of my faith,” she shares. Her cultural background also shines through in her work. As a proud Jamaican, Michelle often incorporates elements of her heritage into her stories. “There are pieces of me in my books. You’ll see Jamaican parents, Jamaican dishes, or even a Jamaican cab driver in my stories,” she says. “The next heroine for my series with Special Edition is Jamaican.”
Michelle’s latest release, The Bookshop Sisterhood, is a story inspired by her love of books and lifelong friendships. “The book was inspired by a line from a television show, my love of books, and my own friendships,” she explains. The book centers around the powerful bonds between women and the unbreakable ties that hold them together through trauma and drama. “I hope that readers will see the love and bond between women and how powerful that is, despite all the challenges they might face.”
Michelle also emphasizes the importance of networking and building relationships in the literary world. “Relationships are crucial, both as an author and as an agent,” she explains. “There has to be trust and respect. Networking with fellow authors is an author’s lifeline.”
Michelle believes that building strong connections within the literary community is essential for success, whether you’re an author or an agent. She encourages aspiring writers to be intentional about forming relationships with others in the industry, as those connections can open doors and create opportunities.
Looking ahead, Michelle is busy working on several exciting projects. Under her name, she is currently working on the fourth book in the next installment of the Fortunes continuity series with Harlequin Special Edition. Meanwhile, as Zoey Marie Jackson, she has just wrapped up the first book in the Ryder Hill series, The Family Next Door , which will be released in February 2025.
“I’m always working on something,” Michelle says. Her readers can look forward to more heartwarming and inspiring stories that reflect the complexities of love, faith, and family.

Ame John-Muo has carved out an exceptional 25-year career in Civil Aviation Regulatory Management. Before beginning her journey in aviation, she had always been captivated by its complexities—especially in the realm of aircraft operations. Now a specialist in economic regulations of airports, airlines, and air navigation service providers, she contributes significantly to the role of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority in shaping policies and practices in that area.
In her exclusive interview with VBD Magazine, John-Muo reflects on her inspiring journey, sharing insights into the dynamic world of aviation regulation, her evolving career as an author, and the importance of perseverance, mentorship, and faith in achieving success.
John-Muo’s entry into aviation was as unexpected as it was transformative. Holding a degree in Microbiology from the University of Calabar, she applied for a position at the Civil Aviation Authority, unaware that aviation would become her lifelong calling. After a challenging interview process, she secured the role, marking the start of a career defined by continuous learning and professional growth. Through workshops and specialized training in Air Transport Development, John-Muo deepened her expertise in the industry.
Her leadership and her willingness to share her knowledge have motivated many of her colleagues, and her desire is that the next generation will pursue careers in aviation as well.
Alongside her thriving aviation career, John-Muo felt a spiritual calling to share her faith journey through writing. This led to the publication of her first book, All These by Faith, a heartfelt reflection on the role of faith in overcoming life’s challenges.
Her analytical skills from aviation seamlessly transitioned into her writing, allowing her to explore themes of faith, hope, and spirituality. In All These by Faith,
John-Muo encourages readers to confront life’s obstacles with unwavering belief in God. The book is filled with testimonies that illustrate the transformative power of faith, offering readers a roadmap to living victoriously through Christ.
For John-Muo, writing is not merely an intellectual pursuit—it is a deeply spiritual practice. She always keeps a notepad close, ready to capture thoughts or revelations, even in the middle of the night. Her inspiration is drawn from reading, listening to sermons, praying, and meditating on the Bible. She maintains a disciplined writing routine, dedicating specific time each day to her craft. Writing All These by Faith became a personal journey, teaching her that faith is not just a belief, but a tool for achieving dreams. Through her writing, she hopes to inspire others to see faith as an active, guiding force in their lives.
Like many authors, John-Muo initially
grappled with self-doubt. The process of starting her first book was daunting, but she overcame these insecurities through prayer and a deep understanding of her identity in Christ. She compares the experience to wolves in a pack—thriving is easier with support, while isolation can lead to vulnerability.
Her faith and support network have been instrumental in pushing her through challenging moments. She emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with trustworthy and supportive individuals. This community, paired with her strong faith, gave her the confidence to move forward in her writing and professional endeavors.
During difficult times, John-Muo turns to prayer and immerses herself in the Word of God. Her belief that God is at the center of her life drives all her decisions and actions. This faith has enabled her to remain focused on her goals, maintain inner peace, and continue making
an impact in both her professional and personal spheres.
Whether through writing, mentoring, or sharing her professional expertise, JohnMuo believes in the power of knowledge-sharing and empowering others. Her passion for contributing to the aviation industry remains strong, and she continues to mentor newcomers, guiding them through the complexities of the field.
John-Muo is currently working on her second book and remains deeply committed to inspiring and uplifting others. In addition to her writing, she mentors women through the Uncommon Woman Movement platform, helping them recognize their potential and pursue their dreams.
For aspiring authors, John-Muo advises them to discover their message and share it with boldness. She believes every writer has something valuable to offer and encourages them to stay true to their calling. Her practical advice includes reading widely—especially within one’s genre—to gain inspiration and improve their craft. She also stresses the importance of prayer in staying connected to one’s purpose.
John-Muo’s commitment to helping others grow also extends to her philanthropic work. She actively supports the Spring of Water for the Less Privileged Children Foundation, reflecting her deep desire to give back and make a difference.

Versatile, creative, and dedicated to the art of communication, Judith A. Wilks brings over two decades of expertise in public relations, marketing, and strategic communication to the table. Her impressive career has taken her from journalism to senior roles in public relations and financial services marketing. Today, she excels as a Senior PR Consultant and Strategic Communications Expert. Judith has written compelling narratives, led crisis management strategies, and elevated brand profiles across industries.
In an exclusive interview with VBD Magazine, Judith shared her story of transitioning from accounting to journalism, and her journey to becoming a trusted expert in strategic communication and brand building. She discussed the lessons learned, the challenges faced, and her unwavering passion for storytelling.
Judith is committed to continuous professional growth, as evidenced by her impressive educational background. She earned a Commonwealth Executive MBA in Quality Management from the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC), equipping her with a solid foundation in business strategy and leadership. Additionally, she holds a Diploma in Business Administration from the same institution, which laid the groundwork for her expertise in managing complex projects and organizational dynamics. To further enhance her skill set, Judith has obtained certifications in strategic thinking, customer loyalty, digital marketing, and change management, all of which have been pivotal in her success. Her educational journey reflects a dedication to mastering both the theoretical and practical aspects of her field.
I LEARNED HOW TO ALIGN COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES WITH BUSINESS OBJECTIVES, DEMONSTRATING HOW COMMUNICATION CAN DRIVE RESULTS AND INFLUENCE STAKEHOLDER PERCEPTIONS.
I
KNEW THEN THAT WHILE NUMBERS TELL ONE KIND OF STORY, LETTERS AND WORDS HAVE THE MAGIC TO CREATE AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT NARRATIVE.
Judith’s love for storytelling began at the early age of 10, where she found herself constantly immersed in books and writing. “I remember one particular story I wrote in high school that was so vivid, my literature teacher called to ask me if it was true. That experience cemented my love for storytelling,” Judith recalls. However, her career didn’t start with stories—it began with numbers. She worked in accounting, meticulously calculating time sheets and performing stock counts. Yet, she knew her true calling was elsewhere.
This realization grew during a short stint at Mutual Life Insurance Company as an alterations clerk, where she found herself drawn to creative pursuits. “I knew then that while numbers tell one kind of story, letters and words have the magic to create an entirely different narrative,” she explains. Her leap into journalism soon followed, with a six-and-a-half-year career at the Jamaica Information Service, where she covered Parliamentary news as a Senior Reporter. Her journalism career helped hone her ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely—a skill that has proven invaluable throughout her PR and marketing career.
Judith’s transition from journalism to public relations was a natural progression, allowing her to blend creativity with
strategy. In journalism, she mastered the art of clear, impactful communication. In PR, she built relationships and crafted stories that resonated with diverse audiences. “Each chapter of my career has added a unique flavor to how I approach strategic communications,” Judith reflects.
Her time in financial services marketing opened up new opportunities to work on large-scale campaigns. “I learned how to align communication strategies with business objectives, demonstrating how communication can drive results and influence stakeholder perceptions.” This experience further strengthened her understanding of the impact of well-crafted messaging on both internal and external audiences.
Storytelling is the foundation of Judith’s work. She believes that every brand has a story to tell, and it’s her job to craft narratives that resonate with audiences on a deeper level. “When crafting narratives, I begin by identifying the audience: who they are, what they care about, and how I can make my message resonate with them,” she explains.
By focusing on authenticity and relevance, Judith ensures that her storytelling engages and inspires. “A well-told story can transform a brand into something people feel a personal connection with, and that’s incredibly powerful,” she says.
One of the key principles in Judith’s approach to communications is change management. She believes that in today’s fast-paced business environment, managing change effectively is crucial to organizational success. “Change is a given, and how we handle it can really make or break an organization,” she explains.
Judith integrates change management into her communication strategies from the outset, ensuring that transitions are smooth and effective. She emphasizes the importance of understanding an organization’s culture and values and creating opportunities for dialogue and feedback. “When people feel like they’re part of the
process, they’re not just sitting back and receiving information—they’re actively participating in the change,” she notes. Judith’s approach fosters buy-in from stakeholders, making transitions easier and more successful.
Crisis management requires both preparation and quick thinking, and Judith has mastered both. “I work with clients to create detailed crisis communication plans that anticipate various scenarios,” she explains. These plans act as roadmaps, outlining response strategies for different crises.
Judith also ensures her clients undergo regular training to familiarize themselves with the crisis management plan. When a crisis strikes, she advises clients to focus on controlling the narrative and communicating transparently. “People respond well to honesty and empathy, especially in tough times,” she says. Her approach ensures that even in times of crisis, brands maintain their credibility and demonstrate their commitment to resolving issues.
At the core of Judith’s work is her passion for building strong, resilient brands. She believes that a brand must be genuine, relatable, and consistent to succeed. “Building a brand is like developing a personality—it needs to be authentic,” she explains.
Judith’s process begins by identifying the organization’s core values and aligning them with the target audience’s interests. She then ensures that the brand’s message is communicated consistently across all platforms. “Whether it’s through social media, advertising, or customer interactions, the brand’s voice and message should be cohesive,” she
A WELL-TOLD STORY CAN TRANSFORM A BRAND INTO SOMETHING PEOPLE FEEL A PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH, AND THAT’S INCREDIBLY POWERFUL.
says. Transparency and authenticity are non-negotiable for Judith, as they build trust and foster long-term brand loyalty.
Judith leverages analytics to optimize her campaigns and ensure they have maximum impact. “Analytics are like a roadmap for me—they guide my strategies,” she shares. By tracking engagement metrics, she gains valuable insights into what resonates with audiences and refines her approach in real-time.
Whether it’s social media metrics, media coverage, or website traffic, Judith uses data to ensure her campaigns are targeted and efficient. “Data helps me understand what’s working and what’s not, so I can tweak strategies and make sure the message is reaching the right audience.”
The world of public relations and communications is constantly evolving, and Judith is committed to staying ahead of the curve. She regularly immerses herself in industry publications, attends webinars, and engages with professionals on platforms like LinkedIn to stay informed of the latest trends.
BUILDING A BRAND IS LIKE DEVELOPING A PERSONALITY— IT NEEDS TO BE AUTHENTIC.
One significant trend Judith has embraced is data-driven PR. “Today’s communications strategies are increasingly informed by data analytics, allowing for more personalized and impactful messaging,” she notes. She also sees artificial intelligence (AI) playing a growing role in the industry, with AI tools revolutionizing content creation and audience analysis.
Looking ahead, Judith believes that purpose-driven branding will continue to shape the future of communications. “Consumers today want to engage with brands that stand for something meaningful,” she explains. “Brands that align with social responsibility and purpose-driven initiatives will build deeper connections with their audiences.”
“Earlier this year, I entered a period of reflection that allowed me to recalibrate my approach to my career,” Judith shares. This introspective period helped her realize the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and surrounding herself with a strong support system.
Her decision to transition from over 20 years in corporate Jamaica to independent consultancy initially felt daunting. However, with the unwavering support of her family, coworkers, and friends, Judith has been thriving in her new role. “Their encouragement has turned challenges into opportunities for growth, and I’m profoundly grateful for that,” she says.
As Judith continues to grow her consultancy, she remains excited about what the future holds. “I plan to explore new ways to leverage technology in PR and mentor the next generation of communications professionals,” she reveals. With her deep sense of faith and gratitude guiding her journey, Judith believes that the best is yet to come.

Apowerhouse of talent and determination, Dr. Dominique M. Carson, LMP, excels in multiple fields, including journalism, writing, massage therapy, and public speaking. Her career is nothing short of remarkable, blending her deep love for storytelling with her passion for wellness. From interviewing over 100 iconic figures in popular culture to helping clients heal as a licensed massage practitioner, Dr. Carson is making a positive impact on the lives of others.
Dr. Carson has been featured in prestigious publications such as Ebony.com, The Grio, NBC News, Singersroom.com, Bleu Magazine, Virginian Pilot , and Preferred Health Magazine. Her work spans a wide range of fields, but her ultimate goal remains constant—facilitating people’s lives through her hands and her words. In her interview with VBD Magazine, Dr. Carson offers a glimpse into the experiences and challenges that have shaped her journey and the enduring faith that sustains her through it all. Whether through her writing, wellness practices, or mentorship, Dr. Carson is empowering others to pursue their dreams while staying true to themselves.
Dr. Carson’s love for writing began at a young age, during what she describes as a “troublesome period” in her life. “Writing became a valuable tool when I was going through personal challenges as a child,” she shares. The dissolution of her mother’s relationship with her sister’s father was a turning point for her emotionally. It was then that she discovered the power of words. “My first piece of writing was a letter I wrote to my mother, expressing my love and gratitude towards her in my life.”
Encouraged by her mother, Uncle Ricky, cousins Niani & Fatima, and her grandfather, Dr. Carson began honing her writing skills, learning the mechanics of storytelling and mastering the art of communication. “My grandfather encouraged me to study other journalists and writers—people like Maya Angelou,
and Gwendolyn
she recalls. By fourth grade, she was already editing her classmates’ essays, driven by her passion for writing. “I always believed journalists were authors to the world, and I just knew I could make a difference in people’s lives with my words.”
Dr. Carson’s dedication to writing eventually led her to pursue a career in journalism. After graduating from CUNY Brooklyn College with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree, she found herself at the heart of celebrity journalism, interviewing legends such as Charlie Wilson, Patti LaBelle, Kirk Franklin, Latto, H.E.R, and Snoop Dogg.
“My celebrity journalism career began in January 2013,” she explains. “One of my media mentors, Gary Gentles, recognized my potential and asked me to contribute to Singersroom.com while I was completing my graduate studies. That opportunity opened doors, and 12 years later, I’ve interviewed over 100 notable people in popular culture.”
Dr. Carson speaks fondly of the opportunities she’s had to connect with cultural icons, but one of her most memorable interviews was with R&B legend Charlie Wilson. “Charlie Wilson was a dream interview for me,” she says. “I grew up listening to The Gap Band with my grandfather. He and his wife were so welcoming, and we ended up having a 30-minute conversation. Following that, I got the opportunity to interview him two more times.”
While her journalism career flourished, Dr. Carson also embraced another calling—massage therapy. Encouraged by her late grandmother, who foresaw a future where Dr. Carson would “use her hands to help people,” she pursued a degree and license in massage therapy from CUNY Queensborough Community College in 2019.
“Massage therapy is becoming more of a calling on my life,” Dr. Carson reflects. She’s able to blend her passion for health and wellness into her professional life, using massage therapy as another way to impact lives. “Massage therapists are wellness athletes to the world. You must
guard your heart, mind, and body while delivering your best to others,” she explains.
Balancing both writing and massage therapy is no easy feat, but Dr. Carson manages her time carefully, always striving for excellence in both fields. “I remind myself that I am one person; I am not an octopus. I must stay sharp in my writing and present in my massage therapy work.”
Dr. Carson deeply values the power of collaboration. “I believe in the beauty of collaboration and teamwork,” she says. Over the years, she has contributed to numerous anthologies and collaborative books, including How to Survive Your Freshman Year in College, The Blessings and Curses Anthology, and 9 Voices, 1 Message.
One of her most recent projects is The Whole Entrepreneur , a collaborative book aimed at entrepreneurs seeking success in business and life. “It’s an excellent resource for anyone looking to build a successful and fulfilling life,” Dr. Carson explains. “The book brings together practical advice, inspiring stories, and comprehensive strategies for achieving success.”
Like anyone who’s forged a multifaceted career, Dr. Carson has faced significant
challenges along the way. “One of the biggest challenges I faced early in my career was rejection—especially when I started freelancing as a journalist,” she recalls. Yet, her greatest personal challenges came in the form of loss and health struggles. Dr. Carson overcame a hearing deficiency in her younger years, severe asthma as a child, lost her maternal grandparents within 13 months of each other, endured a near-fatal car accident in February 2023, lost her childhood friend and sister, Alisha “Toya” Owensford to breast cancer in August 2023, and supported her mother through a diagnosis of myositis.
“My faith was tested when I lost my grandparents because they played such an intricate role in my life and profession,” Dr. Carson admits. However, through it all, her faith and inner strength carried her forward. “I overcame these setbacks with the help of my Heavenly Father, family, friends, and trusting that I would find the silver lining.”
Dr. Carson’s journey is far from over. She continues to embrace new challenges and opportunities, both in her writing and in her wellness work. “I am excited about my upcoming speaking engagement at the 2nd Annual Black Massage Therapist Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 8th and 9th,” she shares.
In addition, Dr. Carson is releasing her first customized massage therapy coloring book, T.R.I.B.E. (Trust Requires Integrity and Beauty Effortlessly), this fall. The coloring book is a unique project designed to introduce the themes of her upcoming solo book. “It’s going to be the introduction of my next book, and I’m releasing another collaboration book, Voices of Change, which will be promoted at the S.O.U.L. retreat in Ghana this winter. I see my upcoming engagements as opportunities to spread the message about wellness, massage therapy, being confident as a career professional, and allowing God to orchestrate the events in my life.”
Whether Dr. Carson is writing about the legends of R&B or helping clients heal through massage therapy, she approaches every endeavor with passion and purpose. Her story is one of perseverance, driven by the belief that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Dr. Carson’s ultimate mission remains the same—to facilitate others’ lives with her hands and her words. “I want people to know that I wasn’t afraid to look weird and step outside the box,” she says. “I believed in my craftsmanship and was comfortable with being uncomfortable. Don’t be afraid to change your priorities to match your opportunities, and always trust that God has the final say over your life.”

Cordy B. McGill-Scarlett, MD, has the kind of presence that immediately draws you in—his calm demeanor and thoughtful insights reveal a man deeply passionate about his craft. There’s an unshakable sense of purpose in the way he speaks about his journey, as if each challenge he’s faced has only sharpened his focus and fueled his desire to serve others. From the moment he sat down with the VBD Magazine team, it was clear that his story went beyond just medicine. His life reflects faith and the power of perseverance, making him not only a remarkable psychiatrist but also an inspiring human being.
Behind his quiet humility lies an incredible story. Dr. McGill-Scarlett treats mental health, but he also understands being on the patient side of the equation. Having endured his own battle with a chronic disease, he knows firsthand the struggles of navigating both physical and emotional health. This unique perspective sets him apart, allowing him to connect with his patients on a deeper level, transforming their healing journeys with compassion and care.
A PATH OF RESILIENCE
Dr. McGill-Scarlett’s life journey began in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA, before moving with his family to Parkland, Florida, where he completed high school. From there, he set his sights on Florida State University for undergraduate studies, then pursued both a master’s degree and medical school at the same institution. It was during medical school that Dr. McGill-Scarlett discovered his passion for psychiatry—a field he initially knew little about but quickly realized was his true calling. “I remember my first rotation in psychiatry,” he recalls. “I walked in very nervous, but what surprised me was how familiar and every day the patients were. These were people like your neighbor or the lunch lady, all facing mental health challenges. I realized this was a space where I could truly help people during some of the most trying times in their lives.”
His fascination with psychiatry grew as he saw the rapid and sometimes miraculous changes in patients who received proper
treatment, especially when starting medication. This immediate impact drew him in. “Sometimes you’ll see that turnaround overnight. It’s amazing to watch someone transform, and I knew then that this was where I could make a difference,” he says.
Many confuse psychiatry with psychology, but Dr. McGill-Scarlett clarifies the difference. “Psychiatry is the medical side of mental health—we’re trained in psychotherapy and can prescribe medications.
Psychology, on the other hand, focuses purely on therapy without the medical background. Psychiatry also deals with substance withdrawal and crisis management, which further differentiates the two fields,” he explains.
Dr. McGill-Scarlett works primarily with adults, offering care through outpatient settings, often via telemedicine. His patient population is diverse, ranging from young adults to the geriatric community, and he emphasizes the importance of tailoring care to individual needs. “Mental health doesn’t
discriminate—it affects people from all walks of life. My job is to meet my patients where they are and help them live as full and functional a life as possible,” he says.
One of Dr. McGill-Scarlett’s primary goals is addressing the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in communities of color. “Media plays a significant role in perpetuating stigma, and many people only seek help when they’re already at a tipping point,” he notes. “In African American, Latino, and Asian communities, mental health isn’t always taken seriously until it’s too late.”
To combat this, Dr. McGill-Scarlett actively speaks at community events, churches, and with groups of men of color to promote early intervention and awareness. “I focus on educating people about the symptoms of depression and mental health conditions so that they can recognize the signs in themselves or their loved ones before it becomes critical,” he says. “It’s about shifting the narrative and showing that mental health care is not something to fear but a path to a healthier life.”
Depression doesn’t look the same for everyone, and Dr. McGill-Scarlett is keen
on breaking down its symptoms to help individuals identify the condition. “For most, depression affects sleep, causes loss of interest in activities, induces feelings of guilt and worthlessness, and disrupts concentration and appetite,” he explains. He emphasizes that early detection and treatment are key to preventing more severe outcomes like hospitalization or involuntary psychiatric care.
He also addresses common misconceptions, such as the belief that mental illness equates to violence. “People with mental illness aren’t inherently dangerous. There’s no higher rate of aggression among individuals with mental illnesses than in the general population,” he says. “Education is crucial in dispelling these harmful stereotypes.”
Dr. McGill-Scarlett’s empathy for his patients stems from personal experience. Diagnosed with kidney failure at age 14, he navigated his teenage years and young adulthood while undergoing rigorous treatment, including dialysis. Despite this, he pursued his medical education with determination. “I went through medical school and residency while needing a kidney transplant. I was on dialysis three days a week, for four hours at a time, yet I kept pushing forward,” he recalls.
He describes his experience of working while battling this chronic condition as both exhausting and motivating. “I’d wake up at 6 AM, start rounds, see patients, and then head to dialysis in the afternoon. Afterward, I’d be completely drained, but I kept going because I knew this was what I wanted to do,” he shares.
In an extraordinary act of generosity, Dr. McGill-Scarlett received a life-saving kidney from a former high school batchmate. “It was such a humbling experience,” he says. “This person gave me a second chance at life, and I’m forever grateful. It taught me so much about the capacity for human kindness and resilience.”
Throughout his journey, Dr. McGill-Scarlett has leaned heavily on his Christian faith. “My family is very religious, and faith has always played a central role in my life,” he says. “Even when things were tough, I knew it wasn’t over for me. I had this faith that a kidney would come, that I was meant to keep going.” His faith, combined with his determination, has been a guiding force in his personal and professional life.
Amid his demanding career, Dr. McGill-Scarlett emphasizes the importance of
self-care. He advocates for what he calls “behavioral activation”—a therapeutic strategy that encourages individuals to engage in activities they enjoy, even when they feel unmotivated. For him, this includes sports, time at the gym, and spending time outdoors with his dog. “It’s all about doing something, even when you don’t feel like it. Once you’re active, your mind starts to clear, and you feel more accomplished and energized,” he says.
Dr. McGill-Scarlett is also keenly aware of the role technology plays in mental health care. Having experienced the rise of telemedicine firsthand, he believes it has the potential to improve access to care, especially in underserved areas. However, he remains cautious about the potential rise of AI in mental health. “I hope AI doesn’t replace the human connection in therapy,” he says. “There’s something about talking to another person that’s irreplaceable. But I do see the potential for technology to enhance access to care in remote areas.”
As he looks toward the future, Dr. McGill-Scarlett plans to open his own private practice, specializing in mental health care for men of color. “There’s a need for spaces where men of color feel comfortable seeking help for mental health issues—spaces where they can talk about their struggles, whether they’re related to family, finances, or societal pressures,” he states. His goal is to create an environment where these men can feel supported and understood, breaking the cycle of stigma and silence that often surrounds mental health in minority communities.
With over a decade of medical training and lived experience, Dr. McGill-Scarlett is making a significant impact in the field of psychiatry. “At the end of the day, I want to make a difference in people’s lives,” he says. “Whether it’s through one-on-one therapy, public speaking, or just listening to someone who needs support, my goal is to help people realize that mental health is as important as physical health. And that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.”

Few moments in life are as heartwarming as watching your best friend, radiant with joy, make vows to the love of her life. Fast forward a few years, and to your dismay, you notice the signs—communication has turned into constant bickering, resentment lingers in the air, and they struggle to support each other. They’ve drifted apart, rarely spending time together because they no longer enjoy each other’s company. Your friend confides that she’s lost herself in the marriage and no longer knows her purpose. Despite the challenges, she’s determined to save her marriage, but her husband isn’t.
You want to see your friend happy again, in a thriving marriage with
her husband. But how do you help? Thankfully, VBD Magazine knows a couple who could help them. Incredibly infectious and amazingly authentic, we introduce you to Eric and Temeka Thompson, Marriage Intervention Experts and Certified Life Coaches. After ten years of marriage, this couple had drifted apart, living like roommates and feeling hopeless. Disillusioned by the help they received from their church and therapists, they embarked on a difficult journey of healing.
Today, now married 26 years, Eric and Temeka have a flourishing marriage, and they’re ready to share their story—and their expertise—with others. Their message is clear—whether you’re struggling in your marriage or simply seeking to
strengthen it, there’s always hope for restoration when you trust in God, do the work, and lean into the journey together.
When asked about their journey to becoming Marriage Intervention Experts and Certified Life Coaches, Eric and Temeka Thompson expressed both humility and gratitude. Their journey wasn’t a calculated path but rather one borne out of personal trials and a calling to help others. Temeka reflects, “When we got married, we never imagined being marriage intervention experts or even life coaches. By year 10 to 11 of our marriage, we were on the brink of divorce. We were actively engaged in the church but losing the war in our marriage.”
Temeka goes on to reveal the difficulties they faced: “I had an emotional affair. I was so tired of my marriage not being what I dreamed it would be. We drifted apart and were both unhappy.” Despite seeking help from their church and a therapist, they found themselves disappointed with the advice they received. Their pastor suggested prayer, but that alone wasn’t enough to heal their wounds.
The turning point came when God gave them a clear mandate. “Through our brutal process of restoration, God gave us a mandate to go and help other couples. We became for others what we needed in our time of need,” says Temeka.
Out of their journey of healing emerged a powerful platform— Marriage Takeover®. What started as a simple radio guest appearance turned into something far greater than Eric and Temeka could have imagined. “A friend kept inviting us to be guests on his radio show. We declined for about a year,” Temeka recalls. When they finally agreed, the response was overwhelming. “That one show turned into three, which led to us having our own show on the network, and Marriage Takeover was born.”
Today, Marriage Takeover is a thriving podcast, radio show, and membership platform dedicated to helping couples succeed in their marriage. The mission is to help couples identify their triggers, break generational cycles, and build healthier, lasting relationships.
Eric and Temeka have seen many couples struggle with the same core issues—communication breakdowns, loss of identity,

and unresolved bitterness. “Most of the challenges stem from communication,” says Eric. “Other challenges include spouses losing themselves in the marriage, and lingering feelings of unforgiveness, bitterness, and resentment.”
The Thompsons guide couples through these struggles by helping them identify their triggers and getting to the root of their behavior patterns. Their process emphasizes that the couple should not view each other as enemies. “Our goal is to break down the communication cycle and help them build trust and understanding,” Temeka explains.
As marriage intervention experts, the Thompsons are deeply committed to their work. However, they’re just as committed to maintaining the health of their own relationship. “We are intentional about unplugging,” Temeka shares. “Our office is closed every Friday, and we have set times when we shut down the calendar to focus on each other.”
Family is also a priority for the Thompsons. With a 24-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter, they emphasize the importance of maintaining balance. “Eric and I have date nights together and we also have family nights. Eric does date

nights with our daughter,” says Temeka. “Every Friday, my daughter and I have what we call ‘Tea Time.’ Even while traveling for events, we make sure to incorporate something around the family. We’re very intentional.”
Faith is the cornerstone of Eric and Temeka’s marriage intervention work. “Faith is the source of how we do what we do. We’re Holy Spirit-led with practical resources,” Temeka emphasizes. The Thompsons believe that every marriage has a purpose and an assignment from God, and they help couples see the bigger picture through a lens of faith.
“We start and end every session with prayer,” says Eric. “The Holy Spirit is the ‘Secret Sauce’ in what we do. It’s what sets our work apart from traditional therapy sessions.” They believe that through prayer, discernment, and spiritual insight, true breakthroughs happen.
Examples of their practical homework for couples includes using tools such as the:
l 5 Step Journey to Loving Yourself: designed for the wife who has lost herself in marriage or life.
l Communication Plan: a plan developed by couples to define their communication styles, understand their triggers, and break down their B.S. (belief system).
l Art of Apology: a couples’ guide to the art of apologizing (featured on Fox 5 DC’s Good Day DC).
l Love/Hate List: designed to give couples a safe space for sharing what they love about each other and areas in which they can improve, without turning the discussion into an argument.
“We created these tools as we were healing, and they worked for us,” Temeka reveals. “Now they’re helping countless others.”
The Thompsons strongly believe in the power of community and support systems.
“There’s a lot of noise out there,” Eric admits. “Pray for guidance as you seek the right support. Whether you’re looking for resources or strong in-person support, be clear about your needs and trust God to align you with the right people.”
One common issue the Thompsons encounter is when one partner is more invested in the healing process than the other. “We always say it takes two to tango, but only one to change,” Eric
PEOPLE THINK SEEKING HELP MEANS THE MARRIAGE HAS FAILED, BUT THAT’S NOT TRUE.
states. “When we were two signatures away from divorce, God spoke to me, and I trusted Him to guide our marriage.”
Temeka echoes the sentiment: “For 2 ½ years, I was the only one fully invested in the process. But once Eric saw the consistent changes in me, he began to change too. It’s about doing the personal work first, becoming the best version of yourself, and trusting God for the transformation.”
The Thompsons identify several warning signs that a marriage might need intervention: “If there’s distance where there used to be closeness, constant fighting, a lack of authenticity, resentment, or a lack of support, those are red flags,” says Eric.
They encourage couples to seek help early. “People think seeking help means
FAITH IS THE SOURCE OF HOW WE DO WHAT WE DO. WE’RE HOLY SPIRIT-LED WITH PRACTICAL RESOURCES.
the marriage has failed, but that’s not true. If your car needs a tune-up, you see a mechanic. If your marriage is struggling, it’s okay to seek a marriage coach or therapist.”
Social media and technology can be both a blessing and a curse in modern marriages. “These internet streets are brutal,” Temeka acknowledges. “Couples often see the highlights of others’ marriages and compare themselves. But comparison is a death sentence.”
Their advice? Be content with what God has for your marriage, avoid unnecessary comparisons, and work toward the narrative you want for your relationship. “You don’t know what other couples go through behind the scenes. Create your own goals and stay grounded in faith and love,” Eric adds.
Eric and Temeka Thompson shared their excitement about their upcoming project, My Life Poured Out, which is set to launch in January 2025. They explained that this initiative is specifically aimed at women who are ready to step out of hiding and embrace the purpose God has for their lives. For more details, visit www. mylifepouredout.com. Additionally, the Thompsons are finalizing plans for their annual retreat, which they described as a transformative experience for couples.

1Samuel 16:7 reminds us that God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
Several years ago, I went to a church service where Jo Naughton, author of the 30-Day Detox for Your Soul, was leading the service. As she spoke about detoxing for our spiritual healing, I felt like the only person in the room, like she was talking directly to me. I bought her book and started reading. It was 30 days of spiritual therapy for me. I wept and wept while reading chapter 1 and had a long talk with God afterwards, then repeated the same thing for every chapter. It was as if God was looking deep into my soul and weeding out all the disappointment, hurt, pain, and suffering that I had gone through in my life up to that point. I had buried them so deep for so long, they all came flooding back. It was like seeing my whole life flashing before me on a movie screen. My stomach churned and I felt physically ill. I was sweating from all the crying and pouring out of my troubles to Him. It was a very hard but rewarding 30 days for me. Yet… it was all worth it.
That got me thinking about how often we focus on the physical but neglect the spiritual. Matthew 23:27-28 warns about focusing on the outside appearance but inside is unclean.
Detoxing is a way of life for everyone today. We are always trying a new product to perfect our face, teeth, or body, for that perfect look – continuous renewal of the outer man.
THE MANY WAYS WE DETOX We detox our hair to get rid of harsh
chemicals, help rebalance the scalp, rid the hair of buildup, stimulate hair follicles, and enhance growth. We detox our skin to cleanse it from impurities, promote collagen, and increase elasticity. We go on detox diets to eliminate toxins from our bodies because it is known to improve health and promote weight loss.
But…when and how often do we detox our spiritual lives – to renew the inner man? We get too busy with physical improvements, which leaves little time for spiritual growth.
WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DETOXING?
Fasting is a spiritual detox for Christians: it is abstaining from food or other ‘worldly’ things as a sacrifice to God while we seek Him. There are many reasons why people plan spiritual fasting. Some people fast for a soul
cleansing – pouring out our guilt and shame to God; some people fast to relieves stress; some to reconnect with God; and some to become more sensitive to His voice. Spiritual fasting is also a reminder of how much we need God.
You may ask: “What is fasting and why Christians thing it is so important?” Jesus fasted often. The most famous was the 40-day fast He did when he wanted to prepare Himself for his most important and final assignment and to commune with God. Fasting is also an ancient approach to healing and is historically known to heal and recharge not only spiritually, but mentally, and physically as well. So, when we fast to heal our souls, we actually reap the mental and physical benefits as well. Isn’t God awesome? Every blessing He gives comes with many added benefits.

Are you one of those people like me, who usually eat the same foods, the same way, week after week? It gets old after a while, don’t you think? I’ve decided to go on another culinary adventure, and I would love for you to join me. I want to try foods prepared in different ways, flavor combos that I’ve never used before, and different cuisines. I’m a southern girl at heart and love cooking soul food, canning fruits and vegetables, baking cakes, and pleasing others with tasty traditional treats. Now I want to please myself and try something new.
I know my husband won’t go on this journey with me, but I’m hoping that you will at least try it along with me, even if it’s only for a month. Each week for the next three months, I want to either
prepare or sample a cuisine that I haven’t tried in a while or ever. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, time will tell.
Since this will be trial and error, I will treat myself to a different restaurant each week to try something new. If I like the meal I tried, I will add it to my list of favorites and may even attempt to prepare it for myself. I started something like this a few years back and got distracted when I got married, because my husband likes to keep it simple when it comes to his meals. His rule is: cook it the way Miss Lillie taught you and you won’t get any complaints from me. Miss Lillie is my mother. She was a professional cook and baker who got special requests from the Governor of Florida back in the day. I’m nowhere near as great a cook as she was, but I know how to please a palette.
So, who’s with me? Who’s willing and ready to step out of their comfort zone and try something different? I challenge each of you to do so. If you aren’t pleased with the results, at least you can say, “I tried it, but it didn’t work for me” or you may open a window to a world of new favorites and broaden your experiences while doing so.
I’m sure I’ll make this a bit more complicated than most, but I want to journal the experiences and see where they lead. I will list the following: date, restaurant, cuisine, and food tried, and document the experience (including the service, atmosphere, and did I enjoy the experience and why). Perhaps, I won’t blog about it, but I will keep the records. I’m getting excited and look forward to this journey. Bon Appétit!

In the heart of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, First Alliance International Church shines as a symbol of unity and diversity, led by Reverend David Suderam and his wife, Dr. Janet Suderam. Together, they have shaped the church’s mission to “Pursue Unity and Celebrate Diversity,” reflecting the multicultural community they serve. Their journey of leadership and faith began long before they stepped into their roles as pastor and first lady, deeply rooted in their personal experiences and a shared passion for ministry.
In a recent VBD Magazine interview, the couple took time out of their busy schedules to share insights about their ministry, community outreach, and personal journey. Despite their demanding roles in leadership, their commitment to serving others and fostering unity is evident in all they undertake.
For Reverend David Suderam, affectionately called Pastor David, his call to ministry began in Jamaica at the age of 19. “I knew the Lord was calling me,” he recalls, “but being a stubborn young man, it took me many years to fully embrace it.” His journey towards pastoral leadership took time and patience, but a decisive moment came when he heard a broadcast by Dr. Tony Evans, encouraging late bloomers like Timothy to step into ministry. “I was 40 years old, making excuses again, but that broadcast was a turning point,” Pastor David shares.
He pursued theological education at South Florida Bible College and balanced his studies with a career in the medical field, working with orthopedic doctors in Fort Lauderdale. After serving in various capacities at First Alliance International Church for nearly three decades, Pastor David finally took up the mantle of pastor eight years ago. Since then, he has led the congregation with humility and grace, focusing on developing new leaders within the church.
Dr. Janet Suderam’s path to becoming First Lady of the church was equally significant. “When we were dating, David asked if I would be ready to be a pastor’s wife,” she shares with a smile. Although she didn’t
fully understand what it entailed, her love for ministry and people made her confident in accepting the role. “I love the Lord, and I knew wherever I was, I’d be serving, whether as a pastor’s wife or a regular church member,” she explains. Her dedication to the church is undeniable, as she now plays an active role in youth ministry, community outreach, and supporting her husband’s pastoral leadership.
First Alliance International Church, located at 900 SW 31st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, is a vibrant congregation that reflects the diversity of its surrounding community. “Right now, we have about nine nationalities represented, with 70% being Jamaicans,” says Pastor David. The church’s mission to celebrate diversity is evident in its services and outreach programs, which embrace the cultural backgrounds of its members.
However, like many congregations, the church faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Before COVID, we were averaging around 60 people a week, but the pandemic put a damper on our activities,” Pastor David states. While the church is still working to recover fully, the Suderams have seen God’s hand moving mightily, particularly through their community outreach programs.
One of Pastor David’s greatest hopes for the future of First Alliance International Church is to raise up new leaders from within the congregation. “I want to see more people step into ministry, whether as pastors or evangelists,” he says. The church’s affiliation with the Christian Missionary Alliance places a strong emphasis on missions, both locally and globally. “We want our congregants to be comfortable sharing their faith and witnessing to oth-
ers,” Dr. Janet adds, reflecting the church’s commitment to evangelism.
The couple’s vision also includes a focus on youth and community outreach. Dr. Janet, who serves as the church’s youth director, leads programs that engage young people through games, fellowship, and spiritual teaching. “We’ve structured our youth meetings to include fun activities, followed by a short, impactful message,” she explains. The goal is to make church a place where young people feel welcome and excited to come.
In addition to youth ministry, the church reaches out to the wider community through various programs, including monthly neighborhood visits, involvement with a local elementary school, and a men’s soccer program that brings together fathers and sons for fellowship. “During halftime, we share the Word and minister to the men who come,” Pastor David says, emphasizing the church’s holistic approach to ministry.
For Pastor David and Dr. Janet, faith and family go hand in hand. Their marriage, built on mutual love and respect, is a testament to the power of communication and understanding. “We have to live what we preach,” Pastor David says. “If we model Christ in our relationship, we hope others will follow.”
The couple’s love story is one that reflects God’s timing and purpose. They met at a Good Friday concert in Boca Raton, Florida, and quickly bonded over their shared Jamaican heritage. “We started talking, and before we knew it, we were spending time together,” Pastor David recalls. His proposal came after much prayer, and their wedding, though bittersweet due to the recent passing of Dr. Janet’s mother, was a joyful celebration of their union.
For the Suderams, communication is key to a strong marriage. “David is good with that,” Dr. Janet admits. “I’ve had to learn to be more intentional about letting him know where I am or if I’ll be late.” They also prioritize spending quality time together, whether through watching movies or taking quarterly getaways to recharge. “It’s important for pastors to step away from ministry to focus on their relationship,” Pastor David notes.
Prayer and worship are central to the life of First Alliance International Church, and the Suderams lead by example. “Without prayer, we’re not going anywhere,” Pastor David states. The church holds weekly prayer meetings and Bible studies, both in person and via Zoom, allowing members from around the world to participate. “We have people joining from Jamaica and the United States for Bible study, and it’s been wonderful to see the engagement,” Dr. Janet adds.
Though the church has yet to fully incorporate advanced technology like AI, they are making strides in their media presence. “We’ve recently moved our services to YouTube, and we’re working on building a live music ministry,” Pastor David reveals. Despite challenges, the couple remains committed to creating a worship experience that uplifts and inspires their congregation.
WE HAVE TO LIVE WHAT WE PREACH. IF WE MODEL CHRIST IN OUR RELATIONSHIP, WE HOPE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW.
As they look to the future, Pastor David and Dr. Janet are focused on growing their church and deepening their impact on the community. “We’re praying for more leaders to step up and take on responsibilities so that Janet and I can focus on other areas of ministry,” Pastor David shares. They also have big plans for their worship ministry, hoping to add more musicians to their team.
On a personal level, the Suderams are working towards owning their first home and continuing to strengthen their marriage. “We’re always looking for ways to grow together, both spiritually and as a couple,” Dr. Janet says. “We want to evolve into what the Lord wants our marriage to be.”
Pastor David and Dr. Janet Suderam’s journey of faith, family, and ministry is far from over. With a deep love for their congregation and a clear vision for the future, they are committed to leading First Alliance International Church into its next chapter—one filled with hope, growth, and a continued pursuit of unity and diversity.
