Bishop John & Elder Ann-Marie Baker TRANSFORMING LIVES AND DECLARING THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD by Shanita Rowsey
H
ave you been wondering how to make a marriage work? We have an amazing couple who is not only building the next generation of powerful leaders but is also teaching couples how to keep the spark in their relationship.
Bishop John E. Baker and his wife Elder Ann-Marie Baker are leaders of New Hope International Outreach Ministries (NHIOM) in Tallahassee, Florida. “NHIOM is a Pentecostal, Bible-believing church with a message of salvation, reconciliation, and hope through faith in our Lord Jesus

Christ,” says Bishop Baker. “Our mission is to reach the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to develop mature believers by teaching them the principles of the Word of God, and to release men and women into Christian ministry through the empowerment of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.” The couple has been in ministry for the past 41 years, and throughout the years have hosted many conferences, leadership seminars, coaching workshops, and community events. Kingdom builders, Bishop and Elder Baker have developed
VBD Magazine several top-producing leaders and have helped countless people find God’s plan and purpose for their lives. The couple has preached in many states here in the USA, and they have also spread their wings and have taken the gospel and their teaching on families/marriages and leadership development to other countries, including England, Canada, India, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, Barbados, and Ghana. In Tallahassee, the Bakers are known for holding the NHIOM Family Life Conference in the summer of each year. “Families are experiencing many challenges due to changes in family structure and other societal and spiritual pressures,” Elder Baker tells us. “Our life changing conferences seek to equip and empower people to overcome these challenges and to lead healthy and productive Christian lives.” The Bakers are passionate about seeing people break through the bondages in their lives and invite success into every area. During February of this year, Bishop and Elder Baker hosted a virtual prayer conRESPECT EACH OTHER'S ference, along with 5 other purpose-driven SPACE. PIONEERS’ PARADISE We believe it is important to have a prayer life and allow God to lead concerning your roles among other things. It is so important to pray for your mate out loud. It lets your spouse know what you are praying about concerning them and it makes a difference when they know what you are praying concerning them.” PRACTICAL THINGS TO PREPARE FOR IN MARRIAGE Marriage is a momentous occasion in life, but it is also a life-changing experience. From Bishop and Elder Baker, here are a list of practical things to look out for: • Be prepared for a period of transition and adjustment. • Prepare to help each other grow mentally and physically. The person you are when you just got married is not the person you’ll be in the years to come. You have to help each other grow and mature. • Encourage your spouse. • Pray for wisdom so you’ll know when to step back and allow each other to grow. • Get a Godly mentor for your marriage. Being able to have wise counsel along your journey is important. BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE Bishop and Elder Baker have successfully maintained a healthy marriage and are mentoring other couples. They share the keys to keep the fire burning in your marriage: • Always put God first. • Listen to each other and forgive each other. • Listen to those who love you and offer sound advice. • Be open to learn, change, and grow. • Understand that what works for others may not work for you. • Don’t try to pattern everything that was done in your parent’s home. Find the flow for your marriage. • Rely on each other's strengths. For example, one person may be good at finances so allow that person to handle the finances. • Discuss your roles in the marriage. • Set clear boundaries to protect your marriage. • Agree that divorce is not an option.

eggshells. We can express ourselves in a respectful way. I understand that I have to answer to God. I don’t want to live a charade because I want to live the life that I preach. At the same time, I don’t only want to preach what I have mastered. So, I challenge myself to reach my next level as a husband. When counseling other couples, I encourage them to do the same. Keep the slate clean. Ephesians 4:26 says ‘Be angry, and do not sin, do not let the sun go down on your wrath.’” Elder Baker reveals, “I’m a vocal person and usually make my opinions known; however, I have matured over the years. I am more conscious of how my words may affect my husband and family and make a greater effort to choose the right words. I’ve also learned to compromise and forgive, and my husband does the same.”
THE INFLUENCE OF RELIGION ON A MARRIAGE The individuals’ religious views can have a negative or positive impact on their marriage. “Religious beliefs are important,” Bishop Baker states. “That’s why the Bible talks about being unequally yoked. For how can two walk together unless they agree? Religious views can affect every area of a couple’s life. If you are a Christian, then you have to line up with someone who is going in the same direction.”
WE BELIEVE IN KEEPING THE “SLATE CLEAN.” IT IS IMPORTANT TO US TO RESOLVE CONFLICT QUICKLY, NO MATTER HOW DIFFICULT IT IS. THE LONGER YOU ALLOW IT TO LINGER, THE HARDER IT WILL BE TO CONFRONT.

ADAPTING TO THE NEW NORMAL Over the past two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have struggled to adapt to the change in a positive way. One of the things Bishop and Elder Baker miss most is the ability to travel. However, they found a way to turn a negative situation into a positive one. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, they have created a new normal for their family—every Monday night, the Bakers host “Family Prayer Night” with their children. “It’s a time to check in with our children and pray together. This has been really special to me,” says Bishop Baker.

“We answered the call to the ministry 30 years ago, and never looked back,” Pastor Michael states. “The Lord called us to pastoral ministry, and we said, ‘yes’ to the call.” VBD Magazine sat down with Pastor Michael and Dr. Barbara to discuss the work being done by their ministries, the keys to a successful marriage, and how to resolve coanflict in a marriage. It was wonderful to get golden nuggets from this dynamic couple who are a blessing to so many.

PARTNERING IN MINISTRY In many congregations, husbands and wives work together in ministry, and this holds true for Pastor Michael and Dr. Barbara. “We love working together and one of the activities that we really enjoy doing is ministry,” Dr. Barbara tells us. “We have several ministries—prison, marriage, and restoration, to name some.” The couple serves people from all walks of life, but are passionate about those who are homeless, incarcerated, hospitalized, and survivors of domestic violence. “They have a special place in our hearts,” Pastor Michael mentions. Pastor Michael and Dr. Barbara’s calling has become a way of life, so they have been laboring to bring their mission to fruition.

PIONEERS’ PARADISE SIFRR sails under the banner, “What you make happen for others is a benefit for us all!” The mission of SIFRR is to serve the community through mentorship programs, job training, job referrals, and assistance with food, clothing, and housing. SIFRR was presented with the Religious Service award during the Texas Governor’s 2017 Criminal Justice Volunteer Service Award program. “We got to where we are today by trusting in the Lord, applying the Word of God in our lives, and just being instruments of the Lord,” Dr. Barbara states. “This has led many individuals to accept the Lord as their personal Savior. The Word says, He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. God will keep His Word. He has truly rewarded us to get to where we are today.”
WE LOVE WORKING TOGETHER AND ONE OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT WE REALLY ENJOY DOING IS MINISTRY. The Lord entrusted Pastor Michael and Dr. Barbara with the SORD Church to make disciples by equipping them with Word of God and aligning them with an accountability plan for the Glory of God. Also, the SORD Church provides marriage seminars for couples via Zoom and now in-person. In addition, they operate Standing In Faith - Restoration & Re-entry which is dedicated to helping lost and struggling people find their path. This non-profit is a resource for in-house computer and resume training, connecting for job and life skills training, halfway houses, transitional housing, pantries, work source solutions, and assistance with clothing. Throughout the pandemic, the couple have had to modify the way they operate their ministries by using online meetings and limiting in-person interactions. However, under their strong leadership and guidance, their ministries have continued to contribute to the well-being of the underserved.

strong foundation. To get off on the right foot, discuss your religious beliefs on marriage and the role that religion will play in your marriage.
KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE Pastor Michael and Dr. Barbara have been married for 32+ years. Their number one piece of advice for a successful marriage is for couples to “communicate with each other.” They were also willing to give helpful and practical pointers for couples preparing for marriage: • Have conversations about household responsibilities like cooking, house cleaning, washing laundry, taking out the trash, and so on. • Talk about your work schedule and see how best you can manage your time. • Decide who is the best person to handle your finances.
WE BELIEVE MARRIAGE IS AN INSTITUTION DESIGNED BY GOD. WE BELIEVE THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT THE COVENANT OF MARRIAGE IS SACRED AND LIFELONG. Here is Pastor Michael and Dr. Barbara’s biblical view of marriage: “We believe marriage is an institution designed by God. We believe the Bible teaches that the covenant of marriage is sacred and lifelong. The Bible makes it clear that marriage is a legally binding public declaration of commitment between one man and one woman, never between the same sex. We believe God established a wife to a husband and a husband to a wife, and they are to receive one another as God’s unique and personal provision to help meet their mutual needs. We believe God has charged each husband to fulfill the responsibility of being the ‘head’ (servant leader) of his wife. We believe a husband is to seek after and highly regard his wife’s opinion and counsel and treat her as the equal partner she is in Christ.” CONFLICT IN RELATIONSHIPS To deal with conflict in a relationship, here are the couple’s suggestions: • Pray about the conflict. • Set a specific time to discuss the conflict. • Go into the discussion with a positive attitude and an open mind, to seek a solution. • If the conflict cannot be resolved between the two of you, then seek a God-fearing mediator. INSPIRATION TO BECOME AN AUTHOR The anthology project, Blessed Not Broken; The Power of Transformation, created the avenue for Dr. Barbara to become an author. “I was inspired by the Word of God on forgiveness. I was carrying a load for years. With my husband’s help, directing me to the Word of God on forgiveness, that allowed me to tell my story in the anthology. I have never been the same since. To God be the glory for all that He has done.”

D
VBD: What was the hardest part about writing the story? Dr. TAS: Because Transformation is not a novel and is non-fiction, it was hard to identify the 10 crucial foundational transformational steps. The next difficulty I faced was determining how to convey the life messages from a coaching stance instead of a directive to model honoring the reader's self-development process.
r. Teresa A. Smith (Dr. TAS) is an author, coach, prophetess, speaker, talk show host, and radio contributor. Her first book, Stronger: How Overcoming Life's Adversities Can Push You Into Your Purpose, was listed number two on the list of 20 books Oprah should read in 2019. As an incest and trauma overcomer, she lives life with the mantra, "I own who I am." This mindset motivates her to appreciate and accept life circumstances in her quest to reach her fullest potential and help others achieve theirs. VBD Magazine had an opportunity to speak with Dr. TAS about Transformation, her amazing book. “Transformation is a guide to assisting others in developing an unapologetically spiritual life for themselves and in service to God,” says Dr. TAS. In our interview, the trailblazer discussed the inspiration behind her latest release, what she hopes readers will take away, and something readers would be surprised to know about her. VBD: What inspires you to write? Dr. TAS: As a child, I was a voracious reader and observer of people, and I wanted to write about the connection between self-esteem and goal attainment. This grew into a desire to help people understand the spiritual and life lessons born from pain. I write self-help books that may sample "real life" to help the reader connect to the message. I have written four books, Stronger: How Overcoming Life's Adversities Can Push You Into Your Purpose, Back in the Day Anthology, From Bravery To Victory, and Transformation. I write to help people understand that they have a significant role in this world and be open to self-development, shifting their perspective, and appreciating the here and right now moments. My writing reflects who I am and how I live my life. You will always find references to God, real-life spirituality, and honesty. VBD: What inspired your latest book? Dr. TAS: After reading my first book Stronger: How Overcoming Life's Adversities Can Push You Into Your Purpose, my readers wanted to know how a person be-
MY WRITING REFLECTS WHO I AM AND HOW I LIVE MY LIFE. YOU WILL ALWAYS FIND REFERENCES TO GOD, REAL-LIFE SPIRITUALITY, AND HONESTY. comes stronger. For me, the transformation process was intuitive. But to answer their question, I journaled daily about how I managed my experiences. My journal entries were the inspiration for my new book Transformation. Transformation provides ten thought-provoking messages to guide the reader in their process of becoming stronger. VBD: What did you learn from writing this book? Dr. TAS: Transformation is ongoing, and I have to remain open to discovering how my individuality, environment, relationships, and legacy events influence my perspective. And that it is normal for my viewpoint to shift because I'm in a constant learning, reflective, transformative mindset. Also, it is unrealistic and unfair to expect my loved ones and friends to immediately grasp the significance of my transformation when I am still growing. Change is challenging and it's more challenging for those closest to me because they have to adapt to who I am becoming. Patience with myself and others has become critical to my transformative journey.
VBD: What would be the Scripture verse that fits this story and why? Dr. TAS: St. Matthew 6:34 provides knowledge and hope in living life. The Scripture reads, "Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes." (MSG) Each of us has experiences that propel us either forward or backward. When we fixate on the event and what may happen next, we fail to see the opportunities in front of us. When we appreciate that God is a transformer, we realize that unpredictable life events are part of our evolution. VBD: What message do you hope readers will take away after reading this book? Dr. TAS: To own their future because it is personal, and they do not owe anyone an explanation about their path to self-discovery. Don't become discouraged, for the route will be hard and full of emotional highs and lows. Keep going, keep putting the work in, and they will discover their response to life's experiences has transformed.

s a Christian author, my goal is to present Christ’s love to my readers, even if they are non-believers. We have been saved by the blood of Jesus and enjoy all the blessings that come along with His sacrifices. But God desires that none should perish. So how do I foster a relationship with my readers and present Christ? And what’s love got to do with it? Here are a few things to remember: Keep Going Writing can be difficult; it’s more than just putting words on a piece of paper. Things like anticipating immediate success, negative reviews, and rejection can wreak havoc on our emotions. Since our purpose is to share the love of God, it is a labor of love. The Bible says that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10, KJV). That includes creative ideas and concepts. Recognize the wiles of the enemy, deal with it with the Word of God, and keep writing.

Get to know your readers We are called to minister to the lost. If we separate ourselves from them, how can we be used to meet their needs? Jonah was sent to Nineveh, and he went the other direction (Jonah 1:3, KJV), rendering himself ineffective. Let’s get to know our readers. Connect with them, show them how God brought us through, and how He can do the same thing for them. Get involved Your book is written, the reviews are in, and the sales are coming. Now you can become a part of the solution. Does your book address the homeless situation? If so, join an advocacy group, donate clothing to a local shelter, or provide a meal to someone sleeping on the street. Love is an action word. What’s love got to do with it? Everything. It’s all about love—Christ’s love for us and our readers. Readers may pick our novels to learn more about social issues, but they should walk away knowing that God loves them and cares about them and their issues. Someone needs to hear from you. Keep writing, get to know your readers, and get involved.

“Have you ever tried something you were afraid to try because it mattered so much to you? I did when I started writing. Take the chance everyone and just do something you love.”
J
osie Riviera is a USA TODAY bestselling author of contemporary, inspirational, and historical sweet romances that read like Hallmark movies. She lives in the Charlotte, NC, area with her wonderfully supportive husband. They share their home with an adorable shih tzu who constantly needs grooming, and live in an old house forever needing renovations.
VBD: Why do you write? JOSIE: I am inspired to write because I want to provide joyful romance books that are inspirational, light, and positive, with a guaranteed happily ever after. Books are meant to be delightful, and transport us to another place. While I touch on serious topics such as opioid abuse, international adoption, and spousal issues, I hope my books are lighthearted, sweet, and wholesome. My goal is to deliver a well-written book to my readers and leave them with a happy sigh. VBD: What genre do you write? JOSIE: I write sweet and inspirational

Christian contemporary and historical romances and have written over 40 books. These books are available in ebook, paperback, large print paperback, hardcover, and audiobook. VBD: Tell us about some of your writing accomplishments. JOSIE: I am a USA TODAY bestselling author. In addition, I have been awarded the Golden Pen award by RWA for Seeking Fortune, my historical inspirational romance about the Romany Gypsies, as well as being a two-time finalist for InD’tale magazine for 1-800-Summer and Seeking Rachel. Both my Christian contemporary romance, Seeking Rachel, and inspirational historical romance, A Homecoming To Cherish, have been reviewed by Publishers Weekly. VBD: What are three elements that are always present in your writing? JOSIE: Three elements that are always present in my writing are ethics, positivity, and representing Christian values.
VBD: What inspired your latest book? JOSIE: The inspiration for my latest book, A Summer To Cherish, came from a real-life experience. The book centers on a renowned painter, the hero, who is going blind. He is bitter and struggling with his faith. VBD: What did you learn from writing this book? JOSIE: From this book, I learned that perseverance pays off. The heroine is encouraging and upbeat, and her faith never wavers. The hardest part of writing this story was writing the hero. I loved him from the beginning of the book, and his struggles became my struggles. VBD: What would be the Scripture verse that fits this story and why? JOSIE: There are many Scripture verses that fit this story. The one I always kept in mind is, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7, NIV VBD: What message do you hope readers will take away after reading this book? JOSIE: I hope readers will understand that people matter, not what they do for a living. God will call you at any age and in difficult seasons. You just need to listen for His voice.

few tears fell down my cheeks as I gazed out over the ocean. I had been praying that God would bring me a husband, but I was frustrated that I wasn’t seeing God move. I had been fully committed to walking in God’s ways for a few months now, including waiting until marriage to have sex again, but God wasn’t confirming the desires I had for this guy at church.
When I first surrendered my love life to God, I doubted whether I would find a guy who loved God. But a few months after I started going to a new church, I noticed this cute Asian guy, Jeff, on my volunteer team. When Jeff prayed over the team, it was the most beautiful and sexiest thing I had ever seen, and I could see Jeff’s heart for God and people from his interactions with others at church. As I started to like Jeff more, I prayed that he would ask me out. Some weeks Jeff engaged me in conversation when I saw him at church, but other weeks he barely said a word to me. I left church some days in tears, crushed that he may not like me back. A few months went by, but Jeff still hadn’t asked me out. I debated asking him out for coffee to get to know him better, but the Holy Spirit told me not to ask him out. I knew Jeff was supposed to be the leader and pursuer in the relationship, so I trusted that if he was the guy that God had for me, then God would tell him to make a move. I waited, prayed, and waited some more. As my desires for Jeff grew, my impatience and frustrations also grew as time went on. I cried out to God, “God, why do I like this guy when he doesn’t even seem interested in me?” As I prayed, I asked God to take away my desires if Jeff wasn’t my future husband. I also declared that if Jeff was the one, that he would know I was the one that God had for him, and that he would have the confidence to pursue me and ask me out. After nine months of liking Jeff, I fully surrendered my heartbreak and doubt to
God, and convinced myself that Jeff wasn't the one. Deep down, I still liked Jeff, but I told myself it was time to move on. I was sick of liking someone for so long who didn’t like me back. Even though it felt like my heart was broken, I felt this unexplainable peace from God. I was done trying to make things happen, and God was the one in control. I kept my distance from Jeff at church to protect my heart, but a few months later things started to shift, and the miracle I had been praying for unfolded at the Christmas party for our volunteer team.
Jeff made an effort to talk to me all night and seemed interested in getting to know me as more than just a friend. When I started pulling out of my parking spot after Jeff walked me to my car, I almost hit the truck parked next to me because I was so flustered. “God, is this finally happening? Is Jeff pursuing me?” A few weeks later, Jeff sat next to me during our church’s New Year’s Eve service. He started texting me, and a few days later, he finally asked me out. Nine months after our first date, we said “I do” in front of God, our family, and closest friends.

LITERARY DEN God’s ways and timing don’t always make sense, but we must trust that his timing is better than we could ever imagine. If you are praying and waiting on God for a spouse, here are 3 things to focus on as you trust God with your own love story: DECLARE GOD’S WORD As you pray for God to bring you a spouse, memorize and declare God’s Word to renew your faith. If you’re not sure which Scriptures to pray, these are the Bible verses I prayed the most when I needed hope: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” - Psalm 37:4 NLT “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” - Matthew 6:33 NLT “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.’” - Genesis 2:18 NLT REMEMBER YOUR ANSWERED PRAYERS When you start to doubt whether God will bring you a spouse, take time to consider all that God has done in your life. Remembering how God has moved in the past renews your faith. The God that performed miracles in your life before is the same God who is capable of bringing you a spouse.

ENTREPRENEURIAL GAME CHANGER
Tamika Newhouse PUSHING LIMITS TO HELP OTHERS DREAM OUT LOUD by Dr. Henritta Stewart 30

F
rom teen mom to the author of 18 books and the winner of 8 African American Literary Awards, Tamika Newhouse is a literary icon in her own right. A quick glance into her journey reveals her boundless creativity as she uses her platform and literary prowess to provide opportunities for Black creatives worldwide.
This visionary is the CEO of African Americans on the Move Book Club (AAMBC) Inc., which aims “to develop interactive literacy-based programs centered around African American books and those who write them.” Further, Tamika created Delphine Publications by the age of twenty and has successfully released over three hundred titles as a producer and writer. She is the powerhouse behind the groundbreaking AAMBC Literary Awards, the only entertainment literary awards show for Black creatives. “Never be intimidated by those who share the same dream… there’s room for all of us to be successful.” Tamika’s openness has endeared her to her clients and supporters. Through her literary knowledge, influence, and relentless drive, she has launched the careers of many in the publishing industry, helping them to fulfill their dreams. There is no stopping this trailblazer. Tamika created Traces of Mika, a podcast “designed for Black girls who dare to dream.” In Season 1, Tamika shared her “journey to success as a Black woman and single mother, along with her ups and downs in the publishing industry and relationships.” The highly anticipated Season 2 chronicled Tamika’s “experiences through unfiltered and candid conversations.” Traces of Mika is available for viewing on YouTube and Amazon Prime. Today, Tamika is still on her entrepreneurial pursuits, producing her first film and documentary called Traces of Mika, an adaptation of her podcast. BEYOND THE PAGES gather and influence people, almost like a prophet in a sense. I help to elevate a lot of writers, creating events and experiences that inspire people. This all started when I began living in San Antonio. I was new and did not have any friends, so I went on MySpace and began talking about the books I was reading. I discovered authors this way, who just wanted me to read their books. I was so accustomed to seeing the same black writers being honored that I couldn’t believe that there were hundreds and hundreds of other black writers, just like me. I began to host a podcast called AAMBC radio and a book club. I promoted black books and hosted interviews because I was simply discovering their stories and sharing it with the world. From there, my organization grew into something bigger than I would have ever imagined. VBD: Why did you start the AAMBC Literary Awards? TAMIKA: AAMBC stands for African Americans on the Move Book Club, because the awards were birthed from the book club. I wanted writers like me to have the opportunity to be honored, but I did not want to do it like a ceremony or graduation. I’ve always had that innovative approach to books, to make it fun, inviting and engaging. So from the very beginning, I wanted AAMBC to be entertaining and decided to model it from the music industry. It would be as grand as the Grammys or Oscars, with the red carpet, formal attire, celebrity hosts, and performances. I wanted us to walk the red carpet like we were stars as well. My dream was to have a literary award show as a star-studded event, and that’s what it is today.
and editing industries. Some of them include author activist, best book club, best male writer, best female writer, best screenwriter, best independent publisher, best audiobook – you name it. My desire is to honor all of them. VBD: What are three major keys to building a successful literary business? TAMIKA: From my experience, I have learned three things. First, you must know your voice, niche, and audience. Second, you must have a game plan and consistently put that plan into action. Third, you have to build relationships. When you have all those things flowing, you’re destined to be successful and grow. VBD: What other services do you offer authors? TAMIKA: I offer a wide range of services, including interviews, virtual conversations, book tours, and media tours. I own a management company called Delphine Legacy Media that helps writers to develop their brand, discover their brand voices, and generate marketing ideas and campaigns. VBD: What advice do you have for authors? TAMIKA: Always remember that you’re an artist first. When you’re settled on this, and you understand your audience, you’ll know how to market to them. For example, everyone is not going to be interested in your book, so don't say your book is for everybody because your book is not for everybody. Find an artist you admire, observe how they market to their audience, and learn from them.
VBD: How has your vision for the AAMBC Literary Awards evolved? TAMIKA: The awards event has caught the eye of major studios and streaming services, so I feel like it’s only a matter of time before it is seen by millions and billions of people.
VBD: How do you successfully practice work-life balance? TAMIKA: It’s all about prioritizing and organizing your day, especially if you have multiple projects and activities. You have to be really disciplined. You can't work on everything every day. Also, you can't work on every idea all at the same time either.
VBD: What are the categories for the AAMBC Literary Awards? TAMIKA: Wow, we span so many categories that expose and celebrate creatives in the podcasting, filmmaking, publishing,
VBD: What helps you to keep going when things are tough? TAMIKA: Honestly, myself. I am definitely my biggest cheerleader, but I’m also my biggest critic. Then I would have to say

he way this power couple came together is a story made for a romance novel. Michel and Johane Filemon were born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and raised in Orlando, Florida. They were born 6 days apart. Their parents were friends, and their moms even went shoe shopping together while they were pregnant with them.
Amazing, right? With that said, Michel and Johane did not become friends and start dating until college. Eventually, they tied the knot in a dreamy wedding, and now have five wonderful children. “We got married young; we were 24 years old then, and we have learned plenty along the way,” Michel mentions. Today, Michel and Johane have been together for almost 20 years but married for 15 years. “Our favorite thing to do is to be with each other,” says Johane. “We have yet to get tired of seeing each other daily and being in each other’s presence is always a thrill. We’re not only in love with each other, but we love and respect the individual we each are.” STRENGTHENING A RELATIONSHIP Talking with Michel and Johane about ways to strengthen a marital relationship, they agreed that listening to each other is very important. “Everyone says to communicate,” Michel remarks, “but I would recommend focusing on the listening part the most so that when you respond, it’s based on what was actually said and not what you thought you heard.” Johane adds, “Learn each other’s love languages and learn to love your partner in that love language. Showing love without understanding your partner’s love language can lead to a lot of disappointment. Trust us, we’ve been there.” WORK-LIFE BALANCE The Filemons smile when we mention work-life balance. “With five kids, careers, and businesses, finding the right balance all the time is almost impossible,” Johane tells us. “What we’ve learned over time
42
is that the traditional version of worklife balance doesn’t exist. Instead, we’ve come to realize that priorities can change depending on the time or situation.” Michel states, “Sometimes work and business require more focus, while other times we make more of an effort to do things with the kids, and other times we recognize that we need to spend more time with each other. “ TIPS FOR COUPLES CONSIDERING MARRIAGE “It’s simple - you create the rules for your marriage,” Johane reveals. “We realized early on that some of the advice we received, while well-intentioned, would not work for us. No marriage will ever be identical to another. So, talk with each other, find out what works for you, and be willing to listen, learn, and correct course.”
ABOUT THE FILEMONS Johane Filemon holds bachelor’s degrees in Exercise Science from Florida State
University and Dietetics from the University of Georgia, and a master’s degree in Food and Nutrition Science from the University of Georgia. She’s a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and the owner of Wonderfully Nutritious Solutions, a virtual nutrition consulting practice where she helps clients nationwide overcome chronic pain and inflammation by transforming their gut health. Michel Filemon has a bachelor’s degree in Information Studies from Florida State University and an MBA from Florida A&M University. He currently works as a risk management professional within the financial services industry after 9 years as a healthcare business consultant with a multi-national consulting firm.

Auguiste & Patricia George Open up about their romance, the importance of having a Christ-centered relationship & becoming empty nesters
A
uguiste and Patricia met in the Fall of 1983 during their first semester at the College (now University) of the Virgin Islands, in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. They were first introduced by a mutual friend and over the course of the next several months they ran into each other quite a bit. Auguiste worked as a library aide through the College Work Study program and had the opportunity to see Patricia every time she came to the library... and no surprise she too got a job at the library. They got to know each
other very well and developed a lasting bond that quickly blossomed, which led to them being known as the “love birds”. They both continued their studies at Florida A&M University (FAMU) and got married shortly after in Tallahassee, Florida. Their union was blessed with four wonderful and talented children: Veronique, Dominick, Dietrich, and Ayanna. Tallahassee, a family-oriented city, was the perfect place to raise their family – fostering a safe, fun-filled, and academic hub that was ideal for this young family. Over the
years they have connected with wonderful, supportive friends who have helped them settle in a place where they originally had no family. Their family has expanded to now include daughter-in-law Jazmine George (Dominick's wife), and son-in-law Benjamin Fox (Ayanna's husband) and 3 adorable grandchildren, Jayce and Carter George and “Benji” Fox. The Georges’ reputation as a nurturing, caring family has been under girded by their faith in Jesus Christ and being active members of their church. They served

With that in mind, the next best thing you can always do is to forgive, apologize, and always be willing to do so.” EMBRACING LIFE AS EMPTY NESTERS At this stage in life, with all kids grown and gone from the nest, Auguiste and Patricia have more time to focus on each other. With both working from home, it makes the work-life balance easier knowing that they are just a floor apart. “I have always kept just one job with no travel, since it is important to have an impactful presence in our family life,” Auguiste reveals. Smiling, Patricia tells us, “I love taking ‘mental health' days to relax and I also enjoy mini vacations with Auguiste.” They also enjoy having lots of fun with their furball Koda, an 8-year old Yorkshire terrier. Both partners should feel they are the one giving the most. This only applies if you share the same values, such as work ethic, managing money and commitment to the relationship,” says Jenny. Mike adds, “How do you know what your partner thinks? Discuss these topics before marriage.”
ABOUT THE CROWLEYS Michael Anthony Crowley, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, moved from Ohio to Panama City, Florida with his family when he was in high school. They had lived in several mid-Western states because of his dad’s job as manager of various G.C. Murphy stores. wo people in love can radiate attractiveness, power, and joy. In celebration of love and passion, VBD Magazine is delighted to feature Dr. Ethan Dixon and Mrs. Sheena-Hope Watson Dixon. This young power couple is supporting each other as they push their limits and stand in purpose to positively impact lives.
In 2015, Ethan and Sheena-Hope met but did not start communicating on a regular basis until 2016 when they connected again at a Caribbean Premier League cricket match. Soon after, the duo decided to build a solid friendship and learn about each other. “On January 1, 2017, Ethan asked me to be his girlfriend, and I said yes,” Sheena-Hope reveals. “What a lot of people didn’t know is that on March 7, 2017, Ethan had asked me to marry him. I said yes then too. From the day he proposed, we vowed that our wedding date would be March 7th. We got married on March 7, 2019, however despite being married from 2019, we did not have our wedding and reception until March 7, 2021.” MEMORABLE WEDDING MOMENTS Favorite wedding day moments will be different for every bride and groom. With that in mind, we asked this couple to share their favorite moments from their own nuptials. For Sheena-Hope, it was her wedding vows and the moment she sang to her beloved. “In January 2019, I sang happy birthday for my best-friend, and Ethan jokingly asked why I’ve never sang for him. So, on our wedding day, I sang to him ‘I Choose You’ by Sara Bareilles. Our first dance was exciting, too. We danced to ‘This is Why I Love You’ by Jamal Moore.” “I have two memorable moments,” Ethan asserts. “The first time was when I saw Sheena in her dress as she made her way towards me. The second was when she sang to me.” SPENDING TIME TOGETHER “It is the simple pleasures that I enjoy,”

says Ethan. “My work schedule is often hectic, and I spend several nights a week away from home so when we are able to enjoy a night in each other’s company, it is refreshing.” Whether you are dating or married, building a strong relationship takes effort. To improve a couple’s bond, Sheena recommends, “travel together so you get to experience new foods, adventures, and cultures together. I love doing all of that with Ethan.” STRENGTHENING A RELATIONSHIP While every relationship is unique, the Dixons suggest the following to strengthen the marital relationship: • No matter how long you’ve been together, never stop dating each other. • The same effort exerted to get your spouse is the same effort needed to keep him or her. • Always exercise open and honest communication. WORK-LIFE BALANCE Achieving work-life balance in today’s fast paced world can be challenging. “At 5 pm weekly, I switch from work mode to wife and mother mode,” Sheena-Hope tells us. For a physician, work-life balance can sound like a foreign idea. However, Ethan is determined to spend time with his family. “Given my work schedule, I carve out quality family time and couple-time with Sheena. The balance, though sometimes challenging, exists in my ability to stay in-the-moment when we are together.” TIPS FOR COUPLES CONSIDERING MARRIAGE If you are considering marriage, how do you prepare for a happy married life? As you contemplate, here are tips from the Dixons: • Every day you wake up and choose your partner. • Love is a choice not just a feeling, choose to stay in your marriage. • Eliminate or limit outside influences in your relationship.
ABOUT THE DIXONS Mrs. Sheena-Hope Watson Dixon is a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She is an Attorney-at-Law who has been practicing for over 7 years. Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, Sheena-Hope is a proud past student of St. Andrew High School for Girls. Sheena-Hope enjoys singing, dancing, curling up with a good book, and watching her favorite guilty pleasure television shows, Basketball Wives or Love and Hip Hop. A proud mother to a 2-year-old, she is learning to navigate the challenges of not only balancing being a wife and full-time attorney, but also motherhood. Though difficult, the rewards are ten-fold.
Ethan Dixon, MD is a husband, father, doctor, son, brother, and friend. Currently, he is a post graduate candidate in the Obstetrics and Gynecology program at the University of the West Indies. He is a proud graduate of the St. George’s College where the morals and values instilled have played a significant role in the man he is today. An avid football fan and a staunch supporter of Manchester United, Ethan enjoys playing video games and watching comedy series and movies. He enjoys hanging out with friends and loves spending time with his amazing toddler who brings him joy every day.

n our ever-changing world, nothing quite energizes us like a good story. Get lost in the memorable love story of Robert and Jacqueline Meredith who will celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary next month. Congratulations are in order for this power couple who recently became parents of twin daughters. The duo is still on fire and staying resilient as they work on their dreams. Dive into their love story!
“Our entire wedding day was wonderful,” Jacqueline remarks. “But the most special part was after it was over, and we went to our hotel room down the street from where our reception was held. It was such a special feeling because after months of planning and sometimes crying, everything turned out beautifully. The next morning, we flew to Hawaii, our honeymoon destination, as a married couple.” FACING THE INEVITABLE When it comes to love, Jacqueline faced a challenging situation—one that would push her in ways she didn’t expect. That experience became a guiding light for her new relationship. In February 2010, just days before Valentine’s Day weekend, Jacqueline was still hoping to resume her relationship with a man who she had broken up with two months prior. Even so, she had accepted a date with Robert for the weekend although she wasn’t excited about the date.
An Intimate Chat with
Robert &Jacqueline Meredith Preserving Their Bond & Standing In Purpose
“Looking back, it makes perfect sense that being lovesick likely led to me feeling physically sick,” says Jacqueline. “Particularly since the uncharacteristically cold, dreary weather of that Georgia winter was complicit. A runny nose, a hot forehead, and overall weakness were my symptoms, I told the second man, Robert, who had called me that night. And it didn’t help that I was hungry but had no strength to cook in my townhouse. Within an hour or so, he showed up at my door with medicine and pizza. They were just what I needed although I wasn’t sure about the man who delivered them, but his attentiveness to my needs made me begin to pay real attention to him when I

read a couple’s devotional book, share our concerns about our relationship, jobs, health, extended family… basically anything that comes up.” Robert adds. “We still do that today. We write our concerns down in a journal and then we pray about them. It’s amazing to look back at what we’ve written and see how God has worked out, in one way or another, everything that we’ve been concerned about over the years.” STRENGTHENING A RELATIONSHIP To keep the spark in your relationship Robert and Jacqueline recommend: • Pray together. • Seek wise counsel when needed. • Encourage each other as you pursue your dreams and interests. • Laugh a lot. • Be kind in your interactions. You can disagree and still be kind. • Talk about the conflict but do not allow the conflict to affect the entire marriage. TIP FOR COUPLES CONSIDERING MARRIAGE “Every engaged couple should meet with a reputable marriage counselor for premarital counseling,” Jacqueline states. “The counselor can help the couple determine what they should be prepared for in their marriage.”

Author Jacqueline J. Holness had ignored him at my church for years. I was feeling so sick I broke two rules for myself: I allowed him into my bedroom, and we ate on my bed. I say this because we hadn’t gone on a proper date yet. But I was strong enough to assure him that eating on my bed would be the only activity there. He didn’t try anything anyway.
Two days later, Robert left my house. Four days later, we went out on our first real date. Three years later, we got married. That’s a short version of our love story!” PUTTING GOD FIRST It is important to make God the focal point in your relationship so that your foundation will always be solid.
Hours later, we were surprised that the cold, dreary weather had culminated in “To navigate the highs and lows of our snow and that it was rapidly covering lives and our love, we depend on and go metro Atlanta in a rare snowstorm. Are you a book lover who is planning for a binge-reading session? Look no further! Read on to learn more about Jacqueline and her latest release, Destination Wedding. You’ll love getting to know this author! DESTINATION WEDDING “Writing Destination Wedding was my response to an ABC News Nightline report that I saw in December 2009. In the report, it was revealed that 42% of black women have never been married. While that statistic was startling enough by its lonesome, Linsey Davis, the reporter for the segment, interviewed successful, single, black women living in Atlanta to illustrate this point. As a successful, single, black woman living in metro Atlanta at the time, to say I was insulted by this report was an understatement. However, as insulted and defeated as I felt at the time, thankfully a blessing from God was right around the corner. As we said before, my husband and I went on our first date during Valentine’s Day weekend in 2010. And, although it seemed that my days as a single woman were coming to a close at a very fast pace, I could not forget the 42%. At the time, I was looking for self-help books, particularly those that focused on relationships. And as a writer, I considered writing a self-help book for the 42%. I felt that all of the lessons that I had learned over the 10 years it took for me to prepare myself for my husband could be compiled in a wonderful self-help relationship book.
Inspired by an actual Nightline report, Destination Wedding charts four women’s journeys as they discover that love is not an experiment easily confined to a timetable.
Click & Get Online The official synopsis: Three successful best friends in Atlanta believe they are thriving in the Black Mecca. Bossy bank executive Senalda breaks down men from business to bed no holds barred. Hip hop PR guru Jarena praises the Lord and pursues married men with equal persistence. Famous and infamous radio personality Mimi fights with her fans and for the love of her onand-off-again boyfriend.
Lessons Learned “Writing a novel is hard! As a journalist, I had no experience whatsoever in writing fiction. I started writing in 2013, and I wasn’t finished until years later! I had to learn characterization, plotting, showing not telling, and so on. It was hard, but worth it in the end. I want single black women to know that if you want to fall in love and get married to the man that God has for you, it can be done despite negative statistics swirling around them and even internal barriers that impede the process. Also, I want Destination Wedding to be a fun, hilarious, and wild ride of a book. I believe I am accomplishing both of those goals based on the feedback I have received so far.”
But then, four women, Jarena, Senalda, Mimi and Whitney, my main characters, But when an ABC News Nightline report, began showing up in my imagination. hen it comes to love, we cannot predict when it will happen. Fear can creep in as we get older, and we think it’s never going to happen. Fret not! Love can happen at any age. UNDENIABLY YOURS “Every love story is beautiful but ours is our favorite,” Beverlyn tells us.
Anthony and Beverlyn were born and raised in a little town called Kellits near the famous Bull Head Mountain in the parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. Growing up, they knew each other and in early adulthood had a momentary connection but love never bloomed.
“This was our love at first sight moment,” Beverlyn says. “Two people looking at each other for a lifetime and then miraculously falling in love without knowing how.”
This couple’s adventure started in their early retirement years, when Anthony placed a call to Beverlyn in January 2021, while she was convalescing from an illness. The more time he spent in conversation with her, the more he longed to tackle the distance that separated them to see if what he felt was real.

G
arth and Kerryann Davis have been married over 15 years. “We got married at a resort in St. Mary on July 8, 2006, before a lovely set of people, most of whom are still a part of our journey,” Garth tells us. “Kerryann’s father died in 1999; hence her older brother was slated to be the giveaway father but circumstances beyond his control prevented him from attending the wedding. Her Uncle Derrick effortlessly stood in the gap and that was one of her most treasured gifts.”
MEMORABLE WEDDING MOMENTS The wedding day is one of the most important days in a couple’s life and should provide fond memories for the bride and groom. “Our first dance to ‘When a Man Loves a Woman,’ by Percy Sledge was unforgettable,” says Kerryann. “I believed we were locked into each other’s love and warmth and at that point it felt as if time had stood still. Nothing or no one else mattered. Prior to this at the church, our parents did a “Candlelight Ceremony,” a symbolic act of uniting two families.” “As a part of our honeymoon celebrations, we visited a church in close proximity to our hotel,” Garth reveals. “We both started out our life together with Christ at the center and that has been euphoria for us to date.” While the flame of love had burned brightly, this power couple remained celibate until their honeymoon. “Our honeymoon night was scary beautiful,” says Kerryann. “Two inexperienced people coming together in passion and purity to discover each other’s untrodden territories.” “Rafting on the Rio Grande was epic and exhilarating,” Garth adds. “The tour guide,

Steve, made the 2.5 hours romantic tour memorable. It was a symbolic encounter of mutual desire to a lifelong discovery of each other and places together.” STRENGTHENING A RELATIONSHIP Garth and Kerryann suggest the following ways to keep the bliss in your relationship: • Put God in the center of your relationship. • Speak and listen to each other in love; that is the best foundation to establish. • Be each other’s best friend. • Surround yourself with people who respect you and your spouse and not persons who feel they have a vote in your relationship whether it’s living or dying. • Pray without ceasing for your spouse. • Avoid secrecy-the number one killer of passion and love in a relationship. WORK-LIFE BALANCE With children in the mix, this couple is still trying to attain work-life balance. “I discipline myself to meet targets for work during times set for working,” says Garth. “In doing that, weekends and other times designated for family time can be done without interference from work except for emergencies.” “I struggled to find balance especially during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic when the family status quo changed,” Kerryann admits. “However, as a goal-oriented family we sat down and worked out boundaries that made life a little better for our family. Essentially, prioritizing family needs first is crucial and we endeavor to complete work tasks at work. Additionally, as a family we enjoy each other’s company and activities were planned accordingly to meet each person’s needs. Finally, prayer is a staple in our home.” TIPS FOR COUPLES CONSIDERING MARRIAGE Before you save the date, here are Garth and Kerryann’s recommendations: • Learn to esteem each other. • Ensure that God is the center of your relationship. • Do premarital counselling with a trained family therapist before setting a date for your wedding.

CREATING A POWERFUL LEGACY
Attorney Mark C.A. Jennings ON DOING WHAT HE LOVES, BUILDING STRATEGIC ALLIANCES, AND ACHIEVING WORK-LIFE BALANCE by Ann Marie Bryan
A
ttorney Mark C. A. Jennings has established himself as an influential leader with a proven track record of success and an impactful voice. Even with over 20 years of experience practicing law, Attorney Jennings is still on the move starting a law practice and looking to build more strategic alliances. His areas of concentration include sports and entertainment law, corporate finance and securities law, conveyance, probate, and estate matters.

I BELIEVE IN COLLABORATING ON INITIATIVES AND HELPING TO TACKLE ISSUES THAT WILL ULTIMATELY EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND COMMUNITIES. I AM COMMITTED TO MAKING A DIFFERENCE.
“Usually, I have a good idea if I can help a client and what needs to be done,” says Attorney Jennings. “There are exceptions of course, but after so many years of practicing law, I have encountered many versions of the same problem. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is seeing the relief on a client’s face when we finally achieve the objective he or she wants.” VBD Magazine is proud to share insights from our exclusive interview with Attorney Jennings. We discussed his inspiration to pursue a career in law, his plans now that

he has established a practice, and how he successfully balances work, life, and family. INSPIRATION TO PURSUE LAW Attorney Jennings hails from the parish of Clarendon in Jamaica. He attended Frankfield Primary School, Calabar High School, and then graduated from the University of the West Indies (Mona) with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and a minor in Philosophy. He earned his Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law. Interest in the law has been a part of Attorney Jennings’s life from an early age. “When I was a little boy, I was fascinated with the police. My mother told me that if I wanted to work with the police, I should become a lawyer. I asked her what that was, so she asked my father to take me to the court. That day, I watched the attorneys arguing with each other in court and I loved it. After that, my mother started to call me barrister Mark and she never stopped until the day she died. I have been practicing law since 1995, and I find a career in law challenging intellectually, along with being personally fulfilling and financially rewarding.” ENTREPRENEURIALLY DRIVEN There is no greater time than now for a purpose-driven action and Attorney Jennings was ready to take the leap. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, I decided to start my own firm. I wanted the freedom to work from wherever I wanted to and the freedom to do the type of work that I wanted to do.” Attorney Jennings operates out of two offices, Mark C. A. Jennings & Associates, Miami, Florida and Mark C.A. Jennings & Co-Partners, Kingston, Jamaica. “I want to expand my firm by hiring more lawyers. Also, I would like to establish larger offices in Jamaica and the State of Florida. In doing so, we can help more clients.” As anticipated, Attorney Jennings will continue to build strategic alliances to exchange ideas and share resources. “I believe in collaborating on initiatives and helping to tackle issues that will ultimately
empower individuals, organizations, and communities. I am committed to making a difference.” ADVICE TO ASPIRING LAWYERS “Go for it, it’s a great profession, you will never regret it. With the complexities of our ever-changing legal system, there are diverse legal career options so choose wisely. Remember that at the heart of the legal profession is the service we provide to clients to help them resolve their legal challenges.”
A CHALLENGING MOMENT “In my first two weeks as a lawyer, I went to watch a trial with my then boss who I was supposed to be assisting. He got up and announced to the judge that I would be the one conducting the trial. I was shocked and terrified. I got up, pretended that I knew what I was doing, and by the mercy of the Lord, I actually won the case.” WORK-LIFE BALANCE When he is not practicing law, Attorney Jennings is busy pursuing his passion for

Despite that, he tells us, “His love for God is first and next his family.” Attorney Jennings is married to the love of his life Sardia and they have two sons, Chase and Stephan. Sardia was born in the parish of Clarendon in Jamaica. She attended St. Thomas More Preparatory School and Glenmuir High School. She then attended Auburn University in Alabama, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After working for many years as a Cardiac Nurse, she then transitioned to Application Analyst in the healthcare industry. Sardia loves nature, watersports, hiking, dancing, tennis, gardening, the theater, and fine arts. She is a firm believer in natural remedies and the body’s ability to heal itself. “We were married on July 12, 1997, and will be celebrating our 25th anniversary this year,” Attorney Jennings reveals. Smiling, Sardia adds, “Where did the years go? Our wedding day was beautiful, filled with friends and family. I remember that we were a bit worried because we had invited

PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HAVEN I want to share three ways that our intimacy as husbands and wives can be deepened by following the pattern in our relationship with Christ. Daily reminders of God’s love for us. Sometimes these prompts are as simple as the sound of a bird chirping by the window to remind us that He will take care of us. Unexpected, thoughtful, and delightful gestures come our way in our walk with the Lord. God is the master of the little things – because He knows exactly what we need at any given moment. Similarly, we can be intimate with the little things, especially when it is just what we appreciate most: a small note of affection, a bouquet of flowers, a back massage, a walk around the neighborhood or a rest day from regular activities.

HOW CAN WE BE INTIMATE LIKE JESUS CHRIST AND THE CHURCH? by Kerry-Ann McPherson
I
f intimacy could speak audibly, it would say these words: “I want to know you and be known by you.” How beautiful. It’s lovely to know that husbands and wives are privileged to potentially know each other deeply and learn to love each other deeply too. This is like the relationship between Jesus Christ and the church.
But we have a small problem. When we sit down to examine what this looks like for us in our own marriages, we might think back to Jesus’ time on earth or the early church. Our ideas might be wrapped up in a previous time zone. Why is this a problem? It could make the connection to Christ and the church seem outdated and irrelevant. Thankfully, it is neither.
Memory lane of thankfulness. Gratitude is so gratifying. Whereas in the first point, God is pouring out on us, in this case, we are pouring out on the Lord. When we begin to list all the ways God has helped us, rescued us, and turned our lives around, we find ourselves falling in love with the Lord all over again. In the same way, sit and go down memory lane with your spouse for all the ways they’ve done some amazing things. Let him/her know how grateful you are. You’ll be reminded of why you fell in love, and laughter will rekindle with your precious memories. Undisturbed quality time. Whenever we’re feeling empty, there is something completely refreshing about spending undisturbed quality time in the Lord’s presence. We receive the energy, spiritual encouragement, and strength to keep going. Likewise, true quality time with your spouse is a recipe for deepening intimacy. A road trip or a weekend retreat where you can both unplug from external distractions, focus on each other, and have soul searching conversations builds rich connection. When our marriages reflect Christ and the church, we will continually grow in intimacy with each other, showing others that God’s love is not stagnant or short-lived.

ou love the smell of the one you love. In fact, you loved their scent before you realized you were in love. This explains why you love cuddling up and breathing in the scent of your beloved. Sleeping together and breathing in the natural scent of your partner is intoxicating and often comforting. These aroma chemicals released by our bodies are called pheromones. To you, your partner has the best scent in the world. Their personal scent, behind all the perfumes, lotions, and the like, is what attracted you in the first place, and it is what contributes to that intimate and sexual connection.
Sleeping together strengthens a couple’s bond which has a positive influence on your willingness to overlook little annoying things about your partner. It brings a feeling of deeper closeness. Sleeping is also needed for the body, mind, and soul. You know the feeling and effect on your mood after a restful cozy sleep. You are much more cheerful and less grumpy. You also know how you can be miserable and impatient after a restless night. Let’s shift gears to loud and rhythmless snoring. You know, the kind of snoring that does not follow a pattern. It goes up, then down, then a pause, then it trebles; it is one of those things that can keep you from enjoying the delight of sleeping together and can prevent you from getting the rest you need and deserve. The sound of snoring can lead one of you to leave the bedroom in the middle of the night or opt for separate sleeping quarters. This can have an effect on that intimate connection needed for a happy relationship.
HOW SNORING AFFECTS INTIMACY by Damaris Nightingale
This is a complaint I heard often from family, friends, and clients. So, I decided to help by creating a functional aroma that would relax the breathing airways to eliminate or reduce snoring. eet Pastor Scott LaPierre, who is an advocate for promoting healthy marriages and counseling those in crisis. Pastor LaPierre is the teaching pastor at Woodland Christian Church, an author, conference speaker, and former schoolteacher and Army officer. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Studies from Liberty University. Pastor LaPierre and his wife, Katie, live in Washington State. When they’re not serving the members of their church or raising their 9 children, the couple enjoy speaking at conferences. In his book, Your Marriage God’s Way, Pastor LaPierre examines the principles for building a biblical marriage. “I am passionate about this area of Scripture and life. God designed the family as the primary unit for every other segment in society, including the church. Marriage is the heart of the family. God knows what couples need so they can experience healthy, joyful, Christ-centered relationships, and He provided the principles in the Bible.” In an introspective interview with VBD Magazine, Pastor LaPierre shares his love story, the keys to building a successful marriage, the kinds of boundaries that will protect a marriage, and practical things that couples should do to prepare for marriage. We know you’ll enjoy our discussion as much as we did. VBD: Tell us a bit about your love story. PASTOR LAPIERRE: Katie is my best friend. We grew up together in McArthur, California, and went to high school together. Neither of us were Christians at the time. Ten years after graduation, Katie and I reconnected. We both found out the other had become a Christian, and soon we started talking regularly. At the time Katie was in our hometown while I was teaching in Lemoore, California. Katie moved to be near me, living with our premarital counselors, Pat and Kathy Mundy, until we got married in 2005. I couldn’t ask for a better wife to serve alongside me in ministry.
VBD: How does religious views impact a marriage? PASTOR LAPIERRE: Our religious views strongly impact our marriage. This is why the Bible forbids us to be unequally yoked. In other words, a couple must be spiritually and doctrinally compatible, because of the considerable impact on their marriage. VBD: What was the best piece of relationship advice you were given? PASTOR LAPIERRE: Read books about marriage and attend marriage conferences. My advice to couples would be the same, especially if the couple is thinking about getting married. Also, seek counsel from their parents and other mature believers who they trust. VBD: What practical things should couples be prepared for in marriage? PASTOR LAPIERRE: They should be prepared for the trials and struggles that will come. Challenges come in different
forms—conflict between the husband and wife, difficulties with children, financial issues, or health problems. A strong marriage allows two people to weather these storms. VBD: What are some ways to strengthen a marriage? PASTOR LAPIERRE: Here are some surefire ways: • Focus on Christ and living for Him. • Spend time together engaging in activities. • Share your hearts and dreams with each other. • Strive to serve each other and put your spouse ahead of yourself. • Pray and read the Bible together. • Set boundaries that protect your marriage. • Pursue physical intimacy. • Remember what Christ has done for you so that you are more likely to forgive and be gracious toward your spouse. Bitterness and resentment can ruin marriages.

VBD: What is the best way to deal with conflict in a relationship? PASTOR LAPIERRE: Strive to focus on your own weaknesses and shortcomings versus your spouse’s. Keep a short account. Try to listen to what the other person is saying versus just waiting for an opportunity to talk. Most importantly, when you recognize you have done something wrong say, “I am sorry for…will you please forgive me?” Do not include the word “but” as it destroys apologies. VBD: How do you successfully practice work-life balance? PASTOR LAPIERRE: Honestly, I struggle in this area and the way I am trying to improve is by letting my wife tell me when I am working too much, and I need to make more time for her and the children. If I don’t do this, I could work from the time I get up to the time I go to bed and neglect my family. I am ashamed to say that, but it is true. I appreciate my wife for being honest with me and helping me grow in this area.
VBD: What kinds of boundaries protect a marriage? PASTOR LAPIERRE: There must be boundaries in time and relationships. With time, husbands and wives must make time for each other. Remove other things from your lives, whether work or hobbies, that would prevent you from spending quality time together. With relationships, husbands can be friends with other women, and wives can be friends with other men, but they shouldn’t be alone together, engage in intimate conversations, or spend too much time together. VBD: How important is physical connection in a marriage? PASTOR LAPIERRE: It is very important. God has an entire book of the Bible, the Song of Solomon, committed to the physical side of the relationship. In 1 Corinthians 7, God commands husbands and wives to recognize their bodies belong to their spouse and they should strive to please each other.

VBD: The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we live and work. What steps have you had to take to adjust to our new normal? PASTOR LAPIERRE: It has been an adjustment, because so many people were upset by the situation. It was impossible to please everyone, because to please one side was to upset the other. I have had to adjust by accepting that being a pastor means doing what’s right even when it’s not popular or causes people to leave the church. VBD: What’s next for you? PASTOR LAPIERRE: Next for me is launching my finance book and workbook, Your Finances God’s Way. This is the follow-up to my previous book and workbook, Your Marriage God’s Way.

It’s not hard TO LOVE YOU by Ramona Powell Dennis
You make it very easy to love you. You are no-nonsense and I like that. Your transparency with your feelings is inspiring. I know that we both are holding back on saying something because we both feel that it’s too soon, but you make it easy to love you. Our connection is like no other. We get each other. You complete my thoughts and say my words. It seems that I do the same to you. Because of this, I seem to know what you are going to say before you say it. I have only read of a love like this and to have it so early on, let’s me know that this is unique. What we have is unique. I crave conversations with you. I need to hear from you every morning and hear your voice before I close my eyes at night. There is a power that is drawing us together. No matter how I’ve tried to fight it, I can’t.

The gravitational pull is too strong. So, I yield. I yield to this special connection that we share. You are a part of my spirit. I think of you every vacant moment. I smile at the very thought of you. You ooze out of my pores. I love our chats about God and His wonderful works. Our discussions go deep. We value each other’s opinion and respect our disagreements. We are good together. We click. We snap into place like two puzzle pieces, meant to be connected. I guess that’s why it’s not hard to love you.

e are inspired by the story of Angela Tanita Cunningham-Simms, author of My Story is for God’s Glory. She decided to write a personal account of her life because she believed it was time for the church to be open and honest. When God impressed upon her that He chose her to survive because He knew she would boldly give Him the honor, glory and praise, this mother of four and grandmother of nine could not remain silent. Angela asserts that if we have an unfamiliar mask, the world cannot find their way to Jesus.
As we sat down with Angela, she delightedly sang the words of a well-known hymn Amazing Grace: ‘through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come,’ to signal her gratitude amidst her painful experiences. She is a survivor! In her own words, “I've had some shipwrecks, some fiery furnace experiences, some dark days, and some weary nights. But I stand before you today to declare it is good just to be alive.” VBD Magazine is happy to share a sneak peek of Angela’s story and her words of wisdom. She hopes that others will see that their story is also for God’s glory. MIRACULOUS TESTIMONY In September 2017, Angela developed blood clots in her lungs, fainted in the shower, and was rushed to the hospital. When she fell, she lost some of her front teeth. Without knowing the severity of the damage to her teeth, she was discharged from the hospital. However, a few days later, her mouth became infected and green matter started to come from her eyes. She was taken to the hospital once more, placed on blood thinners, assigned a walker for balance issues, and then sent home. One month later, a severe pain affected her left arm and despite her attempts to reduce the pain, nothing worked. Her daughter called 911 and thankfully, the medics treated her situation like a heart attack. In the emergency room, the doctors informed her that they could not treat her because she had no insurance. But by the grace of God, a young doctor decided to

place her on observation for five days. During this time, they discovered that she had four blockages and did a quadruple bypass heart surgery. Although Angela admits that her illnesses were due to poor food choices and inactivity, mistreating her body, being overweight, and simply being unwilling to change, she acknowledges that she is alive today only because of God’s grace and mercy. WORDS OF WISDOM In light of her story, here are words of wisdom from Angela: • Love yourself enough to leave an abusive relationship. • Advocate for yourself at the doctor. • Know your heart health. • Do your part to be the change that humanity needs.

Why did it take 56 years and so many missteps, mistakes, bad choices, near misses, sickness, and riotous living? Why did God choose me to survive it? I was created to bring God Glory. God chose me to survive it so He would get the Glory! My every breath is a witness to the world. Jesus died that we can be free. He is on His way back. He is warning us. He is giving us chance after chance to get it right. You see, as a survivor, I’ve courted shame, homelessness, embarrassment, self-hatred, imprisonment, abuse (physical, verbal, and emotional), abandonment, hurt, and confusion. Look what it got me. The devil was laughing at me. But somebody let it slip that I am a Royal Priesthood, a Peculiar People. Now I have straightened My Crown and I reign. The devil knows I will serve God with zeal and enthusiasm. God needs me to be honest and forthcoming because other people who are in those same situations need a Sojourner Truth. Somebody who’s not afraid to say “yes.” I was lost but Jesus found me. Yes, I was down but God’s love has lifted me. I’ve put all the ugly pieces of the messes I’ve created on the table at the Potter’s House. I choose to believe it was all for His Glory! He thought enough of the disaster that is my life to keep me here on this Earth. Why me? Why not me? I believe God has been orchestrating these challenges all of these 56 years because he knew someday, I would come to myself like the prodigal son. I am sharing my story because I want you to see yourself as victorious. I want you to know that God also chose you to survive! Your story is for God’s glory too!

LOVING WITH INTENTION AND LIVING WELL Alex & Evangelist Lisa Marie Morton by Dr. Henritta Stewart

any couples get married with the hope of spending their entire lives together. But will every day of your marriage be a walk in the park with perfect weather? Absolutely not! We have heard time and time again that marriage is hard work. We should get it by now—happily-ever-after is possible but not without putting in the effort to nurture the relationship.
Alex and Evangelist Lisa Marie Morton, founders of Let There Be Light Worldwide Ministries, fully understand that even the best marriages go through ups and downs. The high school sweethearts have an impactful testimony about rebuilding their marriage. As a result, they have made it their mission to provide tools and strategies to help other couples maintain and strengthen their bonds. “We carry a deep passion when it comes to teaching on the importance of having an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ and partnering with Him in forgiveness, self-deliverance, and soul healing,” says Evangelist Lisa Marie. “We are committed to guiding people to total and complete restoration.” In an interview with VBD Magazine, the amazing couple talks about partnering with God to restore their marriage after divorce, rebuilding trust, effects of divorce on children, and ways to reestablish love in a marriage. ENDURING LOVE Alex and Evangelist Lisa Marie’s love story started when they were in high school when they fell deeply in love. “We had our first child when I was 16 years old, and by the time I was 25, I was a mother to 3 beautiful children,” Evangelist Lisa Marie tells us. “Our focus became success in business so we could provide a wonderful life for our children. We lost ourselves in the pursuit to build wealth and our priorities fell out of order. Our marriage suffered greatly. My husband's repeated infidelity was too much for me to bear. I couldn't see how our marriage

could make it through the heartbreak of betrayal. Life became real once the issues and pain settled in. We felt like we were in over our heads and couldn't find a life saving device to pull us out of danger. We were drowning in marriage problems and lacked the tools and understanding needed to repair our marriage to make it work.” FACING DIVORCE “After 14 years together, Alex and I, along with our 3 young children, faced the devastation of divorce in 2015. That signaled the death of together forever and the stress and uncertainty that came with it was hard to endure. After suffering the effects of a broken home, I made the decision to partner with God and go after total and complete restoration for myself, my husband, our marriage, and our family. Daily, I submitted my life to the plan and purpose of God. It was then that I discovered who was the true enemy in my life. My focus shifted from my husband and everyone around me, to the master of lies and deception, Satan himself. I began to wage war and fight for what belonged to me. Evangelist Lisa Marie also recommends, “Doing activities as a family occasionally, even if it’s just catching a family dinner. When Alex and I were divorced, we made it a point to remain on the same page when it comes to the upbringing of our children. Although our children spent time between both homes, we both tried our best to see our children every day. Even if that meant just picking them up from school and dropping them off. Those couple of minutes in the car were valuable for me, Alex, and our children. Also, we spent time as a family at the children's sports events, birthday parties, holidays, and an occasional meal out.” REBUILDING TRUST Can a husband and wife rebuild trust? Alex and Evangelist Lisa Marie agree that rebuilding trust is possible and recommend the following: • Both of you must make the decision to be committed to each other and the marriage. • Trust is not established overnight. ometimes, as women, we can use a little motivation to love ourselves. Loving you is an important part of the three main love tiers in a relationship: loving God, loving yourself, then loving your mate. Scripture shows us two things about this: Psalms 139 reminds us how God detailed every feature about you when He made you; and Ephesians 5:29 NLT, states “No one hates his own body but feeds it and cares for it.” This means that every woman is intricately designed and an original, who should care for and love herself.
90
Well, here are a few truths about you, which says you are a good, expensive treasure: • You are a treasure (wealth, prize). People who own expensive treasures will secure them under lock and key, in a bank vault, or use a security alarm to ensure the treasures are hidden from thieves who cannot see or get to them. Ladies, as a treasure, you are the prize to any man! When your mate finds you, his only response is how fortunate and blessed he is to find someone as valuable as you. Scripture
says in Proverbs 18:22 NLT “When a man finds a treasure (wife)…” The word “finds” in the original language means “meets”—therefore when a man meets his treasure—it is YOU. • You are good (quality, virtuous). Proverbs 18:22 KJV continues with, “… he finds a good thing.” So far, we know you are the prize, you are a treasure, and you are a good thing. In the very first book of the scripture, at creation, God referred to the woman as necessary to rectify a problem He
VBD Magazine
called “not good.” God identified the problem and His answer to the dilemma was the woman. He built the woman to fix the “not good” problem; therefore, she is called good. • You are expensive (valuable, high worth). God not only says you are a virtuous woman—a woman of worth, upright, moral, and honest; but also describes your worth as very expensive — “far above rubies,” according to Proverbs 31:10. The ruby is considered the King of the Gems and among royalty,
LOVE ZONE
rubies are the preferred gem. According to the Ruby Gemstone Guide, the ruby “is the most easily recognizable gemstone in the world. The name comes from the word ruber, the Latin word for red. The ruby is some of the highestpriced colored gemstones. One carat is valued at up to $15,000 depending on size and color.” (https://www.bluenile. com/education/gemstone/ruby?) Ladies, we encourage you to accept who you are as a cherished gift God created.
Each time you look in the mirror and see the person looking back at you, affirm your love for her—she is a good, expensive, treasure. Now, that’s the truth.

A Pleasing Plot by Pastor Danyelle Scroggins

hose of us who are romance readers always wish our spouses would just do half of what the author has written in their lines of their romantic scene. After years of marriage, it’s almost as if neither spouse understands the power of romance. Whether you are the giver or the receiver, romance is always and still right. So, I decided, there was no better way to help my couples than to help them write their own romances. To get them started, I give them what I call ‘a pleasing plot.’ Each spouse will use the pleasing plot template to write their own story, their fantasy, desires, and what’s in the corners of their mind. After the plot is completed, they will give it to their spouse to read aloud.
92
You’d be surprised by how much excitement is created between the two of you and how much you can re-ignite some flames that have seemingly been smothered by work, bills, children, honey do lists, and life. So, here’s what you will need: • The Pleasing Plot Template • A Pen or Pencil • A Willing Heart After your plot is finished, read it to each other. You can add more to your story to customize the plot according to your wishes, but have fun, make memories, and create new adventures.
