s we stand at the beginning of a new year, it is with a sense of gratitude and anticipation that I extend my warmest wishes to you. The previous year has been a journey marked by resilience, adaptability, and the collective strength of our community. As the Editor-in-Chief of this magazine, I have witnessed stories that inspired, articles that provided enlightenment, and a readership that is enthusiastic and supportive. Whether it’s the personal victories of individuals or the significant global achievements that connect us, we feel privileged to have shared these stories with you.

In 2024, let’s apply the wisdom we gained and pursue the aspirations that fuel our passion. This is an opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to personal and collective development, nurturing a unity that surpasses any obstacles we may face. ith an unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation, Dr. Ruby Evans, a visionary educational leader, has left an indelible mark on the higher education landscape. Through a journey marked by resilience and an unyielding passion for molding young minds, Evans has emerged as a luminary whose dedication has reshaped the education trajectory.

Evans—a firm believer in a power higher than self—is a dedicated parent, a university professor, statistical consultant, entrepreneur, tennis enthusiast, and philanthropist. Growing up as a country girl from the backwoods of rural Louisiana, this pioneer and innovative trailblazer has always lived up to the mantra—Be the best of whatever you are.

PIONEERS’ PARADISE Evans is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Colorado Technical University and has been a member of the online faculty since 2005. Students have repeatedly honored her with a Distinguished Faculty of the Year nomination, and in 2023, Evans was selected as a recipient of the prestigious university-wide award.

Evans notes, “I have a strong and diverse background with expertise in curriculum development, faculty development, mathematics/statistics, research, educational consulting, and online education. I also hold certification to teach Mathematics for grades 6-12, and I am an approved Reader in secondary Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics. I love logical thinking (my math background) and collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data (my statistical training). My academic and professional training equip me with core skills to be the best professor possible for students.”

AVID TENNIS PLAYER But there’s more to Evans than a stellar academic background and professional career. Along with these accomplishments, she has achieved noteworthy recognition in tennis. Growing up in rural Louisiana, Evans had few, if any, tennis courts where she could hone her skills in the game. The tennis bug bit her when she entered a special college summer program, appropriately named the High Ability Program, for high school juniors in the summer of ’76. At Grambling State University, Evans reveled in the nurturing and supportive environment at this historically Black college and university (HBCU), known for its motto: “Where Everybody is Somebody.” As a rising high school senior, she studied mathematics and classical piano in her first summer at Grambling and used tennis as a coping mechanism whenever she felt homesick.

Beginning to play tennis at 15 was a late start, to be sure. Always an overachiever, Evans quickly learned the skills needed to be an excellent player. She states with sincere conviction, “After God, I credit my mom and Grambling State University as being the catalysts for most, if not all, of what I have been able to achieve -- academically, professionally, and personally.”

And as with everything she does using her mantra—be the best of whatever you are--Evans has achieved remarkable success in amateur tennis play. In July 2023, she captured the Champion’s trophy in the American Tennis Association (ATA) National Championships, NTRP Women’s 18 & over Singles, held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. Before her championship win, Evans earned a Finalist trophy in the July 2023 ATA Women’s 50 & over tournament.

Its website states, “The ATA is the oldest African American Sports organization in the US, founded in 1917 to promote diversity, inclusion and equity in tennis.”

“To make it to the semifinals of the National Senior Games was simply amazing,” says Evans. “The only thing that could have possibly topped that achievement would have been to make it to the final and emerge as the overall winner in my age division.” She was rip-roaring through the draw but faltered in the semifinals after playing two back-to-back threeset tiebreakers. “My body just gave out because I drove up to Pittsburgh, had one day of rest, and began continuous match play. Known for her powerful forehand, Evans continues to enjoy the game, and her trophy collection is approaching 25 pieces of hardware. Not bad for someone who only began playing USTA-sanctioned tournaments in June 2022. Evans explains, “A year ago, I wasn’t even ranked, and now I’m on the USTA’s national standings list in my division, ranked at number 5!

That gives me goosebumps. But I have a tremendous team of coaches, supporters, and friends who have helped me get to where I am.

“I’ve trained with some of the best coaches in Orlando – and currently train once weekly with Coach Gustavo Munoz, affectionately known to me as Dr. Gus, at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona. I look forward to my weekly tennis lessons with him because he continually brings out the best in my tennis game. He is a phenomenal coach who has made me a better tennis player, both mentally and physically. My success as a player is inextricably intertwined with his excellence and innovation in coaching/teaching.”

Evans remarks, “I’m getting to live out my dream of playing competitive tennis.

I’m not trying to be a professional tennis player. Still, I am focused on playing the best I can in local, regional, sectional, and national tournaments--regardless of age--and in USTA league play.

GIVING BACK Fast-forward a half-century from Grambling State University and her humble beginnings in rural Louisiana, Evans has amassed enough accolades to construct a 25-page curricula vitae. She shares, “It’s not as much about what I have accomplished in those pages. Instead, I think about all the students whose lives I have touched and how I helped them keep moving in their educational journeys. I have helped thousands of students achieve their academic and career goals. It is gratifying to know that I have also inspired students to grasp the importance of statistics and data analysis in their daily lives.”

When asked what advice she would give others regarding goal attainment, Evans says, “Be humble and believe there is a higher power than yourself in the universe’s grand scheme. Try not to always make it about you. Instead, think about what you can do to help others.

Identify your goals. What do you want to achieve in life and why? What legacy are you attempting to establish? Who will benefit from your having traveled on this beautiful planet? And then, do you.

Among these luminaries, Dr. Jeanne Porter King, the author behind the groundbreaking work Leading Well: A Black Woman’s Guide to Wholistic, Barrier-Breaking Leadership, stands out as a source of inspiration and wisdom.

Dr. Porter King is an author, consultant, pastor, and leadership coach specializing in women’s leadership. A trusted teacher and guide who has taught leadership at both the undergraduate and seminary levels, Dr. Porter King is the founder and president of TransPorter Group Inc., a consulting company focused on leadership development. She is passionate about developing existing and emerging women leaders. Her goal is to encourage and empower more Black women to lead well. She lives in South Holland, Illinois, with her husband, Pastor Carl E. King.

VBD: Tell us a bit about your story and why you decided to write Leading Well?

DR. PORTER KING: As an organizational development consultant and executive leadership coach, I have the privilege of developing leaders through training

LITERARY DEN and development programs and coaching in the marketplace and ministry. I feel passionately about it, and for the past 20 years I’ve been blessed to develop emerging and existing women leaders.

I understand the challenges women leaders face, whether in corporations or the church—from being overlooked for advancement because they were deemed relational but not strategic enough for leadership or being labeled as aggressive for being assertive and direct. Navigating that line for women is stressful and sometimes downright disheartening. Those challenges are heightened for women of color, particularly Black women, and too many of us pay a toll for leading while Black and a woman.

I have several books on women and leadership. Still, I wanted to address the racial and gender justice issues associated with women’s leadership. Specifically, Leading Well was conceived after two of my closest friends died a month apart, each from rare cancers, at relatively young ages. These friends were Black women leaders of faith at the top of their game.

Competent and charismatic, my friends led with clarity, conviction, and care for

their institutions and those they served.

I couldn’t shake the thought that their deaths were a wake-up call for me, and I started exploring the impact on our whole being of leading while Black and a woman and what our faith had to offer.

VBD: Your book focuses on leading with a wholistic approach. Why? DR. PORTER KING: Too often, leadership development frameworks are about developing competencies, which are more cognitive or mental skill sets that guide behavior. Sometimes, they include emotional intelligence. But once we address the whole being within the context of our leadership we can lead well. And leading from our whole being means showing up as our authentic selves—body, soul, and spirit.

Too many of us Black women leaders hold back a little of our authentic identity to be perceived as fitting into the culture at work or church. Some of us stay in places in which we have been and continue to be excluded no matter how hard we work and no matter our achievements.

Because of other people’s perspectives, we have not always felt we could bring our whole selves to our leadership contexts.

And many of us surely don’t believe we can care for ourselves before we care for everyone else. These stressors leave their mark on our souls, and those marks affect our ability to lead well. Leading Well is about aligning our role with our soul.

VBD: Black women often experience dual assaults of both racism and sexism as they try to lead their organizations. What hope and encouragement can you offer these women?

DR. PORTER KING: The hope that comes through from Leading Well is that as Black women of faith we have resources to deal with the dual assaults of racism and sexism. This book helps to provide strategies to succeed and influence the cultures of exclusion— our resources hail from our faith and community. I also like to remind Black women of faith that even though we may feel like outsiders in these white spaces,

LITERARY DEN that outsider position gives us the most needed distinct perspective.

VBD: Why is spiritual wellness the most important leadership quality for Black women?

DR. PORTER KING: Because we lead from who we are in the depths of our souls and what we do emanates from our innermost being. For believers, truly leading well means leading from a place of internal wholeness. It means leading from the “well” within us and resisting the external cacophony of voices pressuring, cajoling, and calling for assimilation to the world’s models.

VBD: In Leading Well, you draw on the Biblical account of the Samaritan woman. Explain the connection.

DR. PORTER KING: In John 4, Jesus had an eye-opening dialogue with this unnamed woman at the Samaritan well.

Through that conversation, we learn about the well of living water that Jesus promised to her and us. The Holy Spirit flows from that well within and guides us in all areas of our lives. This woman’s gift to us is the insight into the access to the Spirit in our everyday lives and leadership, not just at church.

VBD: What is the issue with leaders adopting cultural leadership models prioritizing performance over people?

DR. PORTER KING: We fall into a performance trap of leading according to shifting external standards. Prioritizing performance over purpose or people causes us to lead from the outside in. For many, that means linking their identity and worth to these fleeing external standards. It can be devastating to our sense of self-worth and overall wellbeing.

VBD: Many Black leaders hold back their authentic identity in favor of fitting into culture or the church. What can these leaders do to reclaim their identity and be themselves in the workplace?

DR. PORTER KING: More and more organizations and corporations are striving to develop inclusive cultures in which

employee diversity is embraced and leveraged for organizational success.

Now is the time to reclaim our identity as Black women of faith and be ourselves in the workplace. It doesn’t mean we spend time preaching the gospel to coworkers while we are supposed to be coding or balancing the books. But it does mean any one of us should be able to lead from a place of integrity formed by our spirituality—without apology. It means we can show up with our natural hairstyles, if we choose, without being treated like an exotic other.

VBD: What can we do to shift from fulfilling external leadership metrics to leading from the inside out—that is, from a place of purpose, values, and wholeness?

DR. PORTER KING: It means getting clear on our purpose and values and leading from that place. One senior executive once told me something that stayed with me: if your purpose and the organization’s purpose align, you will find a path up.

But each of us has got to be clear on our God-given purpose and do the inner work of discerning what we are truly called to.

Too many people of color, Black women in particular, have had to lead from a divided self—being one person at work and another person at home or church.

Clearly, we must always be mindful of our audience and adapt our message and delivery, but that doesn’t mean we forsake our spiritual and cultural values in favor of assimilating to workplace norms.

VBD: Why should Black women examine their cultural heritage to find wellbeing?

DR. PORTER KING: We are a communal people, often living and working in a very individualistic society. We hail from people whose faith empowered them to resist oppression in service to the wellbeing of our people.

VBD: How does this book reshape the patriarchal narrative about Black women and help them lead wholistically, creatively, and effectively?

DR. PORTER KING: Patriarchy in every sphere of influence has created a narrative

about women’s leadership that positions women, especially Black women, as outsiders. Patriarchy is the system of thought and practice that espouses the power of men over women and limits the power of women to lead.

For Black women, patriarchy manifests in the form of gendered racism. I provide four stereotypic themes that Black women face and strategies to defy them. God has called Black women and equipped us to serve in those same spheres of influence, and we can and must defy the bias of the dominant culture.

VBD: What can non-Black leaders learn from your book?

DR. PORTER KING: Leading Well is relevant to all. Yet, I do center Black women and our experiences because, as I mentioned before, we have a distinct perspective. The lessons gleaned from the Woman of Samaria’s story are powerful for all faith leaders. For non-Black people who consider themselves to be allies to Black women, this book provides excellent insight into our lived experience that can help allies be helpful allies.

TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION

experiences and strategies, it reduces redundancy and speeds up the work. We used multiple authors, so we were able to quickly meet deadlines. With all eyes on the project, we shared feedback and suggestions. The lead author managed the project to ensure the anthology’s success.

ecently, I collaborated with a group of 13 Christian authors to create a strategic devotional. Our mission was to share with readers an obstacle we’d overcome. We also wanted to share the wisdom we gained through the experience as well as the strategies we learned along the way. Although I had never worked on an anthology or collaborative project before, I looked forward to the opportunity to work with the members of the Kingdom Authors Network. I’d like to share four important tools we used in the process to complete our project. These tools proved to be invaluable to me and I’m sure they will do the same for you in your next group endeavor.

ACCOUNTABILITY With all authors accountable, we were more likely to commit to our role and guarantee the completion of the project.

Deadlines and milestones were met, preventing delays. Knowing that other authors are counting on you boosts motivation and productivity. Accountability fostered trust as we relied on each other to fulfill our commitment.

DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES Innovation is inspired when authors with unique viewpoints and experiences work together. The challenge is to bridge the differences in opinions and experiences.

This can be accomplished by recognizing diversity as a strength. When every voice is heard and valued, a balanced and inclusive product is created.

COMBINED FAN BASE Successful collaboration with other authors and their fan bases leverages the visibility and success of the project. Each of us promoted the project to our respective fan base. Joint social media campaigns, email newsletters, and other events engaged prospective readers. Our collective launch generated more buzz and excitement.

SHARED WORKLOAD When individuals focus on their own

Diverse perspectives, shared workloads, accountability, and combined fan bases

are important tools needed for a successful collaboration. Individually, we’ve overcome various obstacles. We learned lessons and developed strategies along the way. Collectively, we came together with a mission to help others. We shared the workload, held each other accountable, and on November 1, 2023, launched Hold On, Help is on the Way, a strategic devotional.

n the suburbs of a small town, Tremayne Moore’s childhood unfolded against a backdrop of violation and hidden pain. Behind closed doors, a dark secret cast a shadow over his formative years, and he lived behind a curtain of silence that covered sexual abuse.

“Like the one in six men who were sexually abused before the age of sixteen, I know what it feels like to be broken,” Tremayne reveals. “I was molested by a close family member, so I spent much of my childhood in fear and yearning for someone to take my side.”

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND Tremayne was regarded as a special needs child during his early elementary school days, primarily due to his inability to communicate verbally.

“I struggled with my English classes as I progressed through elementary school; however, I excelled in Math. Around the 3rd grade, my uncle came to live with us.

So fast forward to my middle school days.

My uncle was trying to become a rapper as a profession, and my thought was, if he could do it, I could too. Mind you, I was going through middle school in the 80s, so when 1990 rolled around, I’m now in 11th grade. A classmate introduced

VBD Magazine me to poetry, and I was in love with one particular student. I would write a poem with that very classmate, and I gave up rapping for poetry.

Tremayne completed his undergraduate studies at Florida A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 2001. Additionally, he attended Florida State University, graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems.

Besides writing, what are your other interests?

I love playing chess, soccer, and I enjoy dancing. I also love hanging out with my dad and bro playing football and video games or just chilling with my mom. She is always so easy to talk to.

What inspired your book, The Honorable Bee? I wrote The Honorable Bee as a class essay in the 5th grade. It was so good my teacher said that I should think about turning it into a book. I showed it to my parents, and they were so impressed they invested in it right away. They always support me in whatever I decide to do.

What’s next for you?

The sky’s the limit!

Is this book a part of a series?

I haven’t thought that far yet.

What did you learn from writing this book?

I learned that sometimes even adults need to be reminded that bullying is not okay.

Besides writing, what are your other interests?

I love playing Roblox, playing with my friends at school, playing the drums, and singing with my grandma. But most of all, I love taking walks in the park and on the trail with my dad, my brother, and my mommy. And I love it when my sister MarJae calls me to talk. She is my favorite sister ever.

It’s a remarkable feat to find an author so young who possesses the ability to dive into the complexities of human emotions with such authenticity. Marvis, Jr.’s book tackles a theme that resonates universally.

Is writing easy for you?

I learned how to write at 4 years old.

Writing can be easy if I use my right hand but sometimes, I like using my left hand.

I love writing books. But my favorite part is reading them.

What inspired your book, My Superpowers Are NOT Weird?

My dad helped me write about my feelings.

My parents and therapist say that I have what people say is autism. But I’m super smart. The smartest in my classroom. But my mind just thinks funny sometimes. So, my dad helped me to write about my superpowers. This is what makes me special.

Is this book a part of a series?

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned since becoming an author?

That it takes time, but my dad says, “slow and steady wins the race.”

Give us a quote from your book.

“My dad said people in this world will treat others differently at times. My mommy says people fear what they don’t understand, sometimes it can be because the color of their skin, other times it can be because of how they are on the inside, and how they act when other friends come around may not be how every other kid their age may act.”

“In the book, we have this cool adventure where I show everyone what my superpowers are. I really love being me because my dad, who was a superhero in the army, always encourages me. We wrote this book to help other parents and kids who feel left out because of autism or other things they have. We want to show them that having superpowers and being different is something to be happy about, not something to feel bad about.”

How long did it take you to write, edit, and publish your book?

It seems like forever! My brother Jayden’s book came before mine.

What advice would you give a writer who is working on his or her first book?

It takes a long time! And don’t let your brother finish first because he writes his book faster.

What’s next for you?

I’m going to the 3rd grade, and I will be the line leader.

What did you learn from writing this book?

That I can tell my feelings in a book and make kids like me feel special too.

What was the hardest part about writing this book?

Getting my feelings out in words.

What message do you hope readers will take away after reading your book?

That just because we are different doesn’t mean we are weird. We have big hearts.

Perlie discovered her passion for writing at a young age, crafting short stories for school assignments and realizing her natural talent. “I wrote regularly in a diary in my teen years which evolved into a lifelong love of journaling. CHALLENGING TIMES Between 2019 and 2022, Perlie faced several challenges—a separation from her spouse and subsequent divorce, a job layoff, a new business startup, and a relocation from North Carolina to Florida.

“I was in my mid-fifties and starting over.

I felt off balance, uncertain, and afraid.

Putting pen to paper is what helped shine light on my experiences. I find that I can hear God’s wisdom and guidance when I can clear the chatter from my mind.

Journaling is a great tool for that. God speaks between our thoughts, in the silent spaces. For some people, that happens in prayer, meditation, or just sitting in silence. All of those are a part of my life.

But journaling and writing has been the greatest form of self-expression for me.”

all has been very busy this year with work, family, and writing.

I just released a Christmas novella. Promise Me Christmas is close to my heart because dear characters from the Revolutionary Faith Series take the stage again, bringing life to the post revolution Charleston, South Carolina, 1783. As an author it is difficult to leave the characters when a novel ends. So, I am happy to fill the pages with a Christmas promise of forgiveness and hope.

My next release is in February 2024 with Whispers of Wisdom, Gardens in Time Book Three. This novel is set in my most favorite place in the world, Chenonceau Chateau in France in 1747. My characters wander the gardens and the chateau, piecing together mysterious items from a colorful queen of the past and a great Christian reformer. Run, tiptoe, or dance through the gardens, participating in the charm of the little castle.

eet a woman who takes negative experiences and turns them into unforgettable stories and poems. This is Roe Braddy, a retired educator with over thirty years of teaching experience, a magazine editor, and an award-winning author and poet. Her inspiration to write comes from her parents, the most romantic people she knew, who were both from the South during the Jim Crow era. Their lives were full of history that beckoned to be told and with a childhood full of history and romance, Roe was inspired to write historical romance from that time.

LITERARY WORKS Roe has written three live theater productions and directed a choreopoem and several productions for her local community theater and church. Her first production was a four-act play entitled A Warm Heart of Steel. Then she went on to write her second novel with the same title, and received the Emma Award, which is an award given by the Diverse Readers and Writers Association for excellence in writing diverse romance.

After receiving this award, Roe wrote The Warm Heart series, which also won five awards including Author of the Year, Best Hero, and Best Heroine.

Her love for writing and productions led her to provide insight and direction as a board member of different writing and theater groups. Roe serves on the board for the Writers Wordshop which is a platform that provides poets and writers the opportunity to showcase their work. Currently, she serves on the board of directors for a theater group called Reclaim Artist Collective. The mission of the collective is to strive to create a world in which all people, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, or class can live together in ‘full poetry of existence’ empowering to celebrate their own uniqueness and speak their HER FIRST PRODUCTION WAS A FOUR-ACT PLAY ENTITLED A WARM HEART OF STEEL.

DEVELOPING HER CRAFT Roe is always aware of the importance of finding the time to write and develop her craft. As such, she is currently ghostwriting two novels under the name Clean Page Editing, which will be released in January of 2024. She is also working on her second poetry/short story anthology Coco June and Melanin, which will also be published in 2024.

She is dedicated to writing stories where God wins, because when things get tough she knows God will never leave her or forsake her. When she puts this strategy first, then very little else is needed except perseverance.

Despite this, Taurea enjoyed being in business, and being able to help people is one of the most rewarding things she had ever experienced. But having a desire to help people was not good enough to succeed as an entrepreneur.

“It wasn’t until I experienced repeated failures and attempted to start a business for someone else that I realized I wanted to create my own business. In 2009, I launched “Show Your Success” with the intention of creating better networking environments for entrepreneurs. I used

VBD Magazine to dislike traditional networking events, feeling they lacked value and genuine connections, so I decided to create my own. At that time, I was involved in network marketing, and I used these events to raise awareness about my products and company.”

“In 2012, I faced an extreme bout of depression, even becoming suicidal. I knew it was time to fully embrace my purpose, so I decided to teach entrepreneurs how to become authors. My strategy began with “Show Your Success” hosting networking events and eventually evolved into workshops. In 2019, I founded “Book Profits Club” to build a community of authors who are speakers and coaches, teaching them how to leverage their books for success.

Additionally, I created Author All Stars, a yearly magazine celebrating authors from around the world. We selected 50 authors who also attend our annual conference to receive awards, alongside our Book Profits Club members.”

place, it was time to focus on her goals. Instead of comparing herself to others and their success, she defined success for herself and leaned on God, who provides her with guidance. For her, success is all about being able to do what you want, when you want, and with whom you wish to do i t . She also invests in hiring staff to assist her in delivering better services to her clients.

CELEBRATING ACHIEVEMENTS Having pursued her education at M.A.O College and the University of Curaçao, Dr. Benito has a degree in Management, Business Administration, and in the languages English, Dutch, Spanish and Papiamentu. In 2023, she officially received her Doctorate in Philosophy from TIUA for her studies, accomplishments in entrepreneurship, and numerous contributions to society through philanthropic and civic work. Further, Dr. Benito was nominated and chosen to be one of the recipients of the 2023 President Joe Biden’s Lifetime Achievement Award for philanthropic and community contributions, locally and internationally.

She organized an event where notable interior designers and chefs from HGTV and the Food Network visited Curaçao to host workshops and promote her home island. ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY “When I was working at the Citco Funds Services in Curacao, I decided to move out into my own apartment. My friend’s apartment was vacant at that time, and I took over and did a total makeover of the place. When she came to visit, she couldn’t believe her eyes and said… ‘this is your profession, go pursue it!’

“Interior design has been my hidden gift since I was 6 years old. I was developing it by doing makeovers at my parents’ and friends’ homes, and later at my own home. After preparation and studies, I left my job and started my own studio as an interior designer.

“That was 18 years ago, and during that time discussions around interior design had just begun on the island. I was the first designer to produce my own TV shows and seminars about interior design. It was a fascinating time since it was something new that many thought was out of their reach. By introducing interior design and decorating as something feasible for all, it opened a window of possibilities.”

Today, Welcome Home Designs offers interior design services, master classes, real estate residential and commercial staging, entrepreneurship coaching, speaking engagements and TV production. Dr. Arrindell, a native of Jamaica, West Indies, is the CEO of Inspired Wholeness Enterprise, the umbrella for Inspired Wholeness School; Wholeness Counseling and Coaching Service; and Inspired Wholeness Ministries. She speaks virtually or in person and has spoken in the US, the Caribbean, France, and Spain.

She has authored eight books including her #1 bestseller Armored and Victorious, the sequel to her first biographical piece, Weapons for Victory. After sewing several outfits by hand, her dream became a reality when her parents invested in a sewing machine for her. It was the beginning of a fashion designing career in New York, which ultimately became a store she owned and operated.

Suddenly, everything fell apart, and she lost everything she owned.

STAR POWER LIST ADVICE TO ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS For anyone contemplating entrepreneurship, Dr. Arrindell believes that resilience, tenacity, and authenticity are the vital keys. “With resilience, we will be able to withstand and recover quickly from the many disruptions that could cause us to quit. Resilience must be followed with tenacity where we are determined to succeed against all odds. Lastly, authenticity is necessary to be genuine and trustworthy among our peers. We must distinguish ourselves as more powerful than we think we are.”

Dr. Arrindell believes that we were all given strength by our Creator to be anything we want to be; however, we tend to allow the struggles we face to blind and hinder us. “We cannot be blindsided by pitfalls but must embrace them as stepping stones to the plan we want to achieve.”

Initially, this setback left her feeling too crippled to move, but soon her courage returned. Dr. Arrindell embraced every failure as a learning curve and this helped to develop her uncanny ability to go from upside down failure to right side up success, without staying too long in the ashes. She returned to school at the age of 40, after much prayer and studying, her academic career led to a Master of Science in Counseling and dual Doctorates in Biblical Counseling and Education Leadership.

With no regrets, Dr. Arrindell calls the transition to entrepreneurship the best and most difficult decision she ever made.

God also blessed her with a spouse who allows her the freedom to be the best she can be, while assisting to help make Inspired Wholeness Enterprise a success.

She acknowledges her spouse and three other individuals who contributed to putting the company on the map.

Owning her own counseling business also affords her the opportunity to be a member of Global Women Speakers, with the ability to travel both nationally and internationally to tell her story. “It is during these times that I get to step into my zone with the intentionality of bringing lasting change to my audiences,” says Dr. Arrindell.

FROM VISION TO REALITY The origin of it all traces back to a staff meeting 19 years ago, where Tammy perceived what seemed to be a distinct voice urging her to take a leap of faith and start a private practice. Anxiety and hesitation swept over her as she grappled with the uncertainty of whether she had truly received a message from God. “I also received a prophecy from a woman associated with a prophetic ministry featured on a local Christian television channel,” Tammy recounts. “After making a donation over the phone, I received a cassette tape in the mail a few days later containing the prophecy. The message conveyed that the practice would serve as a healing space for numerous individuals, and that courts would direct people to seek assistance from Journey’s End Counseling.”

Subsequently, Tammy received a second revelation during a women’s ministry event, affirming that the moment had arrived to commence her venture. With only one course of action in mind—to take a leap of faith—Tammy followed through. She resigned from her 15-year-long job and founded Journey’s End Counseling.

A NOTE IN THE MIDST OF THE FOG

On October 24th, New Orleans experienced a super thick fog that led to a massive wreck and pileup on I-55, a tragedy that many of you may have witnessed on the news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones in that tragic accident. As I watched the news coverage and examined the photos of the crash, I felt the Lord speaking to my heart. He asked, “Danyelle, what happens when your life becomes so foggy that you can’t see clearly?” I responded, “Whenever I find myself in such situations, Lord, I heavily rely on You to guide me through.”

After some contemplation, I came up with what I call ‘The Reminder Note.’ Some might say, “Danyelle, with all the books you publish and all your commitments, do you really have time to write notes?” The answer is a resounding “Yes!,” especially when those notes serve as a reminder of the person not to forget amidst life’s chaos. I never want my marriage to suffer again because I allowed the fog of life to overshadow the commitment I made.

Today, I’m sharing this idea with you in the hope that you’ll incorporate it into your own life. As 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NKJV) tells us, “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise….” While this may seem simple or even foolish to some, it can be a powerful tool to prevent us from

becoming so consumed with our own wisdom and pursuits that we forget God, the giver of wisdom, and the people who appreciate our wisdom (or lack thereof) without judgment—our spouses.

Starting on October 26th, I began ending my morning affirmations with a daily reminder list to ensure I don’t forget about Reynard amidst my busy life. At the top of the page, I wrote: The reason why I still want to hold Reynard’s hand as I navigate through life’s challenges and continue to grow.

Here’s a glimpse of what my reminder list looked like: l October 26: Scroggins is always a

call away.

l October 27: Today, he brought me

breakfast at my desk, and went into my drawer and put socks on my feet while I was writing :) l October 28: He ran me a Saturday morning bubble bath, to show his thoughtfulness. l And so on…

These are just a few simple reminders that help me see him through the fog created by my busy life and aspirations.

I hope this idea proves helpful to those who need it most. The Lord prompted me to share my experience, knowing it will resonate with someone in need. So, go ahead, kings and queens of notes–make every day count. May blessings overflow in your relationships.
