Natalee Bailey EMBRACING THE THRILL OF EXPLORATION
There is a unique breed of travelers whose passion transcends mere sightseeing; it is an enthusiastic pursuit, a calling to immerse oneself in the unknown, to embrace the unfamiliar, and to celebrate new experiences. This personifies Natalee Bailey who stands out as a source of encouragement for the intrepid adventurer.
Natalee embodies the essence of true exploration, overcoming the unexpected and allowing each adventure to shape her in profound ways. As she continues to crisscross the globe, her journey serves as an inspiration for others to embark on their own adventures, one destination at a time.
While Natalee indulges in world travels, professionally, her expertise is in the Oil and Gas Industry, where her primary focus lies in process safety. In her expert capacity, Natalee dedicates herself to the crucial task of preventing industry accidents, contributing to the safety and sustainability of her field.
Recently, in an exclusive interview with VBD Magazine, Natalee shared her insights on her transformative journey, destinations that hold a special place in her heart, and tips for adventurers. Let us be inspired by Natalee’s bold spirit as we pack our bags and allow the adventurous
spark within us to lead the way into the world of travel and exploration.
TRACING THE START
As a child in rural Jamaica, Natalee found herself submerged in books, captivated by the tales of distant lands. “I read a lot and dreamed about visiting these distant places mentioned in the books,” Natalee states. Her love for reading continued throughout high school in Jamaica. After graduating, Natalee studied Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Florida A&M University, followed by a Master of Business Administration degree at the University of Texas.
It was during her undergraduate years that a postcard of a floating market in Thailand sparked a profound curiosity within her. “The owner of the postcard told me that I could buy anything there, from an elephant to curry powder, a spice she knew I was familiar with. I was fascinated and vowed to visit one day.”
And visit she did, five years later, setting foot into Thailand and fulfilling her promise to herself. “As I wandered that very market, I was mesmerized by the bright colors, exotic fruits, and old women cooking and balancing in tiny canoes. This trip moved me so much that I vowed to start seeing the world. It also ignited my love for photography, and lately,

flying drones and taking beautiful aerial pictures. My photos allow me to relive these experiences and share them with my friends through visual storytelling.”
ADVENTURE AND CONNECTION
Natalee’s travels have fueled her passion for adventure, nature, and connecting with people. “I enjoy going off the beaten path to see how the natives live instead of staying in the tourist areas. Getting soaked in the icy spray from a glacial waterfall in Iceland, hiking in Machu Picchu, Peru, and balancing in a canoe in a jungle stream in Adjarra, Benin, are some of my favorite memories where I felt most happy, most at home, and most free.”
11 VBD Magazine TRAVEL & EXPLORATION
AROUND THE GLOBE
With around forty countries under her belt, Natalee finds it challenging to pick favorites. However, some destinations hold a special place in her heart:
Iceland
“I love Iceland for its wild beauty, safety, volcanoes, waterfalls, and icebergs. I have actually taken two solo camping trips around Iceland and had the time of my life. This is the place to go if you love nature and solitude.”
Thailand
“The people in Thailand are incredibly friendly, and the cuisine is simply delightful. I also find Thailand appealing for its affordability, offering inexpensive massages, stunning beaches, and a vibrant cultural experience.”
Turkey
“I love to eat, and I would give a Turkish breakfast a ten out of ten. As a Christian, I enjoyed visiting the old churches here, such as Ephesus and Laodicea. From riding over the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia in a hot air balloon, dipping in the clear waters of Adrasan Bay, or looking at the vast tea plantations in the Black Sea region, Turkey captured my heart, and I can’t wait to go back.”
Ghana
“Ghanaians are the most hospitable people, and my favorite dish ever is Kelewele (spicy fried ripe plantains).”
SHAPING LIFE
Traveling has transformed Natalee in profound ways. “It made me more open-minded, compassionate, and tolerant. It helped
me to get rid of many stereotypes about other nationalities and religions.”
Through her adventures, she learned that happiness does not come from owning things but from a mindset. “Travelling teaches you that the average person is good and helps you to develop unlikely friendships. On a solo trip to Morocco, I ordered a taxi to take me to another town 8 hours away, with a stop in the middle. The driver showed up with his wife. They spoke not a word of English and I spoke no French or Arabic, but with gestures, I had the best day with them. We stopped several times to take pictures, buy the sweetest oranges, and consume a delicious lunch, through the use of gestures.”
TIPS FOR ADVENTURERS
Natalee shares travel tips on her Instagram page to offer insights and recommendations to her followers. For those embarking on their own journeys, she offers the following invaluable tips:
GHANAIANS ARE THE MOST HOSPITABLE PEOPLE, AND MY FAVORITE DISH EVER IS KELEWELE (SPICY FRIED RIPE PLANTAINS).
1. Don’t be afraid to go alone; don’t wait on others to enjoy new places.
2. Prioritize safety; choose accommodations with good reviews and avoid risky behavior such as drunkenness, trying drugs, or bringing strangers to your room. Don’t post where you are until after you leave.
3. Figure out how you will communicate. Download translation apps and get a local SIM card. You may find WhatsApp helpful in most cases.
4. Be open-minded and have fun.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Natalee has exciting plans in store. “I am currently planning a trip to Southeast Asia for my birthday.” And, as a lifelong goal, Antarctica beckons, albeit with the hurdle of expense. “I will save up for that,” she affirms, undeterred in her pursuit of exploration.
“Also, I will continue to assist individuals with planning their travels by crafting itineraries, recommending accommodations, arranging connections with local tour guides and drivers, and providing visa guidance.”

NAVIGATING MIDLIFE WITH CONFIDENCE
Denise Drinkwalter, M.Ed.
EXCLUSIVE MIDLIFE RENEWAL COACH
by Henritta Stewart, Ph.D.
Guiding women through the complexities of midlife, Denise Drinkwalter serves as an Exclusive Midlife Renewal Coach. Her remarkable work empowers those seeking clarity, perspective, and inner resilience during this transformative period. With prowess, Denise assists women in navigating midlife challenges, including identity crises, empty nesting, and feelings of being adrift.
Becoming a life coach was not merely a choice for Denise but an inevitable convergence of passion, purpose, and providence—a calling etched into the nature of her being. “I
fervently believe that every individual possesses the innate capacity to transcend their circumstances and chart a course toward fulfillment and success. As a life coach, it is my privilege to facilitate this journey, illuminating the path towards self-realization and boundless potential.”
DISCOVERING PURPOSE
Denise fondly recalls her childhood, where her innate desire to support others blossomed within her nurturing family. Whether it was comforting sadness on the playground or navigating the challenges of post-secondary life, she found joy in moments of insight and discovery.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
A pivotal chapter emerged during her nine-month involvement in the federally funded program Katimavik, where diverse perspectives sharpened her adaptability. This experience solidified her passion for teaching, leading to a 31-year career in education. Throughout various roles, from nurturing students in early education to guiding behavior as a specialized teacher, Denise eventually rose to leadership positions as a vice-principal and principal.
EMBRACING CHANGE
Despite finding joy in retirement and caring for her first grandchild during the day, Denise felt a persistent pull towards something more profound. In 2018, retirement offered her a chance to bask in the joy of childcare, yet an inner yearning for greater purpose emerged. Thus, she embarked on her journey as an Empowerment Life Coach, driven by the belief in the daily lessons life offers. Denise adapted her coaching practice to meet evolving client needs, emphasizing perpetual growth and embracing each moment with openness and readiness. Her journey speaks to the transformative power of self-discovery and the boundless potential within every individual’s path.
A NATURAL EVOLUTION
“Life coaching has always been woven into the fabric of my existence,” Denise shares, “albeit in subtle forms.” For her, it represents a natural evolution, an extension of her career trajectory, and a manifestation of her innate desire to guide and uplift others.
“At the core of my coaching philosophy lies a profound understanding of the human experience,” Denise explains, emphasizing her ability to unravel struggles and

illuminate latent potential. She possesses a unique skill, the ability to transform challenges into steppingstones and fears into catalysts for growth. “My journey, marked by its own trials and triumphs, has endowed me with deep-seated empathy and insight,” she adds, reflecting on her capacity to guide others toward self-discovery and empowerment.
EMPOWERING LIVES
Denise’s approach to life coaching is built on a foundation of empathy, compassion, and a profound commitment to understanding each person’s unique journey. She creates a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel free to explore their innermost thoughts and emotions without fear of criticism. Active listening is at the core of Denise’s practice. “Through intuitive listening, I guide clients towards breakthroughs and moments of self-discovery,” she states. Denise believes in asking probing questions that encourage reflection and introspection, often leading to powerful shifts in clients’ perspectives and understanding of themselves.
“My specialty lies in nurturing leadership from within, particularly among women navigating midlife. Together, we explore barriers to personal growth and develop strategies to overcome them,” she explains. Through this process, clients unearth their
innate potential and reclaim agency over their lives. Denise emphasizes that true empowerment transcends specific challenges, as each obstacle becomes a catalyst for deeper self-exploration and growth.
THE BIRTH OF ME ACADEMY
The inception of the Midlife EmPOWERment Academy, affectionately known as the ME Academy, arose from a glaring need observed among women navigating midlife. Denise, the founder, notes, “Amidst the chaos lies an untapped opportunity for profound growth and self-discovery. Midlife brings with it challenges that can feel overwhelming, especially amidst the physical toll of perimenopause and menopause. The ME Academy offers a space for women to find connection and understanding.”
Denise extends her support beyond the ME Academy, offering personalized oneon-one sessions and group experiences tailored to each woman’s unique needs. “My aim is to empower women to reclaim agency over their lives and embrace the possibilities that lie ahead,” she explains.

YOU Time: for YOU, by YOU, because of YOU, is leading a transformative movement. Inspired by conversations with individuals from diverse backgrounds, Denise recognized a common struggle: the difficulty of prioritizing self-nourishment amidst life’s hustle and bustle.
“The pervasive guilt and shame associated with taking time for oneself often hinder individuals from fully embracing moments of personal nourishment,” Denise reflects. Determined to shift this narrative, Denise embarked on a mission to redefine ‘ME time.’ Drawing from her own journey of self-discovery, which included challenging herself with a 10K race in Niagara Falls, Denise uncovered the deep impact of prioritizing personal growth and fulfillment.
Denise’s mantra, “for me, by me, because of me,” transcended mere words, becoming a guiding principle for living authentically and intentionally. “This ethos resonated deeply with individuals worldwide, leading to the creation of the podcast and the companion journal,” says Denise. Through insightful interviews and thought-provoking discussions, the podcast invites listeners to embrace the power of self-nourishment and reclaim agency over their lives. The journal offers practical tools and exercises for cultivating a daily practice of self-reflection and empowerment.
TIPS FOR MIDLIFE EMPTY-NESTERS
Here are Denise’s three tips to guide midlife women through the challenges of empty-nester syndrome:
1. Embrace Moments of Presence: Amidst the whirlwind of emotions,
MY SPECIALTY LIES IN NURTURING LEADERSHIP FROM WITHIN, PARTICULARLY AMONG WOMEN NAVIGATING MIDLIFE. TOGETHER, WE EXPLORE BARRIERS TO PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOP STRATEGIES TO OVERCOME THEM.
carve out sacred moments of solitude. Whether it’s a serene walk-in nature or a quiet meditation session, dedicate time to be present simply. Engage all your senses, immersing yourself in the beauty of the moment.
2. Confront Negative Thought Patterns: Take a courageous step towards self-awareness by observing your thoughts. Notice any recurring themes or triggers that exacerbate feelings of loneliness or anxiety. Journaling can be a powerful tool for unravelling these thoughts, allowing you to confront them head-on. Challenge negative narratives by asking yourself, “How does this serve me?” This simple question can disrupt destructive thought patterns, empowering you to cultivate a more positive mindset.
3. Explore New Beginnings: Embrace the opportunity for personal growth and exploration that comes with this new chapter of life. Reflect on your passions and interests outside of your roles as a parent. What activities once ignited your soul? Reconnect with these sources of joy and curiosity, allowing yourself the freedom to explore new hobbies and experiences.
TRIUMPHS AMIDST CHALLENGES
Denise views success as a multifaceted journey, marked not only by triumphs but also by trials. “Each challenge I’ve encountered has been a steppingstone, shaping me into who I am today and propelling me towards continuous growth
and personal evolution,” she reflects. Despite counting her blessings for health and retirement, Denise acknowledges her most significant hurdle: cultivating self-belief and recognizing her own worth.
In today’s digital world, Denise admits to grappling with feelings of inadequacy, especially when comparing herself to other influencers with seemingly boundless reach. “It’s easy to fall prey to comparisons and doubts about one’s impact and influence,” she states. However, Denise finds solace in the individual connections she fosters and the tangible impact she has on the lives of women.
“Authenticity and sincerity are the true catalysts for transformation,” she asserts. “Each testimonial and message of gratitude serves as a potent reminder that even the slightest ripple of change can create waves of monumental impact.” Denise firmly believes that success is not solely measured by numbers or reach but by the depth of connection and the magnitude of change sparked in the hearts of those she serves. As she continues to empower women globally, Denise anchors herself in the truth that every life touched and every soul uplifted is a victory in itself.
LOOKING BEYOND
Denise, an advocate for women in midlife and beyond, is excited to launch a program supporting women in leadership. Leveraging her background in education and leadership, she aims to empower women in middle management and beyond to embrace value-based leadership. She envisions her platform growing globally, advocating for women’s empowerment while emphasizing self-love and well-being.
“I foresee my platform growing globally as I advocate for women in midlife and beyond. Through various media channels, I aim to empower individuals to embrace self-love and recognize their inherent value. Together, we can catalyze positive change by prioritizing personal well-being with the mantra of ‘ME time for you, by you, because of YOU.’”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Shrieka T. Evans, APRN, FNP-C, PMHP-BC, acknowledges her parents, Clara N. Evans, and Robert B. Evans, as role models who inspired her to pursue education. She is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioner with 13 years of experience in healthcare.
Evans states, “Education is of vital importance in my family. My parents are retired educators and stressed nothing short of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. They invested heavily in their children’s education.” As a fitting tribute to her parents’ influence, Evans graduated from Pineview High School in Lisbon, LA, the same high school where both her parents are alums.
In 1999, Evans enrolled at Grambling State University (GSU) in Grambling, LA, earning a BS in Biology and a BSN in Nursing in 2008. Continuing her academic pursuits, she returned to the university in 2013, achieving an MSN as a Nurse Practitioner in Family Medicine. Both of her parents also attended and graduated from Grambling.
Evans reminisces, “Early on, my dream was to become a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) player, but God had other plans for my life. I was recently honored and inducted into the Hall of Fame at GSU. I received numerous awards and accolades during my basketball career at GSU, including the NCAA 3-points made champion for 2 years and the NCAA steals champion.
ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING ASPECTS OF WORKING IN THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY IS HELPING OTHERS. SEEING THE DIFFERENCE I’VE MADE, SEEING SOMEONE’S LIFE TURNED AROUND, AND KNOWING THAT I’VE MADE MY PATIENTS FEEL THAT THEY WERE SEEN AND HEARD IS SO REWARDING.
For the most recent award, I was the only female selected in a group of over 500 applicants for the 2023 class for the Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame.” In July 2023, Evans became the sixth athlete inducted into GSU’s Hall of Fame in Women’s basketball.
As a nurse practitioner, Evans gained valuable experience with adults and geriatrics working as a provider in skilled nursing and long-term care facilities. During this time, she decided to further her education at McNeese State University and become a certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in this field.
Evans remarks, “One of the most rewarding aspects of working in the healthcare industry is helping others. Seeing the difference I’ve made, seeing someone’s life turned around, and knowing that I’ve made my patients feel that they were seen and heard is so rewarding. I feel truly blessed knowing I’ve helped patients better their lives.” Having a dual certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner enables Evans
to treat the whole person physically and mentally.
In explaining her philosophical view, Evans offers, “We should not treat mental illness any differently than any other illness. I believe the two are inseparable. The brain is an organ that can hurt like anything else. When the brain is ill, it can affect the whole body. To address medical health, one must consider the entire person – mind, body, and soul. I want to integrate mental and medical healthcare to improve overall wellness.”
Regarding challenges encountered, Evans notes, “Because of the stigma that’s associated with mental health, a major challenge that I had to overcome was to make my patients aware of and know that mental illness should not be something to be ashamed about or thought of any differently than any other illness. They should understand that when it is treated equally to other illnesses, they will have the courage to obtain and receive help.”
Evans stays informed on current healthcare advancements, treatments, medications, and best practices by reading research articles in her field, collaborating with fellow professionals, and attending medical conferences. To avoid burnout, she takes vacations and spends time with her family. Evans identifies her wellness therapy as emanating from the time spent with her two amazing daughters, Destin and Demi, watching them grow up and excel in their many activities.

While the WNBA is no longer an aspiration, an Olympian in the making is still possible for her family. Evans is blessed to have an up-and-coming swimming phenomenon in her family.
Destin Bell is her mom’s mini-me in many ways. Known to her family and friends as ‘the tiger shark’ because she devours her opponents, Destin frequently competes against swimmers older than her. She is a third grader who likes the moniker ‘the tiger shark’ because a shark is one of the fiercest animals in the sea.
Destin says, “I’ve been attracted to water since birth. My Mom always had to watch me around the water because I would jump in. So, at the age of 3, she put me

As the university’s website shared, “Bulldog Aquatic Club is a USA Swimming registered year-round swimming program that offers competitive swimming and
swim lesson experiences. BAC partners with the Lambright Sports & Wellness Center and Louisiana Tech University.” BAC pays Tech a fee to use the fantastic aquatic facility.
Destin’s favorite swimming style is breaststroke. She smiles and says, “It reminds me of eating ice cream, and you always go

back for another big helping. Just grab a big armful of it. I also excel in freestyle technique.” Recently, Destin competed at the state level on February 22-25, 2024, in six events, the maximum number allowed. She competed in the 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 IM, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, and 100 freestyle. She qualified in all six preliminary events to swim in the finals, where she swam against swimmers aged ten and under. Destin was the youngest swimmer in the meet, only eight years old.
Destin’s practice regimen includes swimming four days a week, stretching, and warm baths. Twice weekly, she does dry land exercises and practices special breathing techniques. Destin shares, “I mentally prepare myself for competition by telling myself I will do great and awesome even though I am only eight. I drink plenty of water and make a smoothie or milkshake that gives me energy. I have big dreams and hope to swim in the Olympics one day.”
When asked about other interests, Destin confesses, “I love sports. I play softball, basketball, and tennis. So, I may leave swimming practice and go to one of the other practices. Sometimes, I have three practices in a day. Last year, dance was also on the list of interests and practices. I have excellent grades in school, and I love to read. I want other children my age
to realize they can also excel in areas and do well while maintaining good grades.”
Destin’s advice is straightforward for anyone considering swimming lessons: “Swimming is a good life skill to know so you don’t drown. Stand and start in the shallow parts of the water until you get comfortable. Don’t be afraid of the water.”
Shrieka Evans and Destin Bell are indeed a dynamic mother-and-daughter duo. Using her academic and career achievements, Evans is committed to merging her patients’ physical and mental wellness.
Professionally, Evans plans to extend her practice and establish additional office locations in surrounding cities offering physical and mental health services. When asked to share three rules for ensuring healthy lifestyle practices, Evans provides these:
Put God first.
It’s essential to take time out for yourself. Hold yourself accountable and walk away, if needed, from toxic environments.
Evans concludes, “My professional and personal lives are blessed. I know my purpose in life; I have been given so much and feel honored to be able to give back to others.”

DESIGNING FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Dr. Nadin L.G. Benito
THE STORY BEHIND WELCOME HOME FOUNDATION – CURACAO
by Dr. Nadin L.G. Benito
On a breezy day along the crystalline beach in Curacao, a hidden gem in the Caribbean, I sit, pen in hand, reflecting on the story of Welcome Home Foundation - Curacao. As the waves ebb and flow nearby, the narrative of perseverance, endurance, grief, pain, and eventual recovery unfolds before me, intricately woven into the fabric of interior design.
I am Dr. Nadin L.G. Benito, an interior designer, author, and the founder of Welcome Home Foundation – Curacao, the writer of this tale of personal transformation and resilience.
Following my father’s illness in October 2014 and his subsequent return home from the hospital, I made a promise to God to utilize my skills in interior design for a noble cause. After the passing of my father in December 2015, I pledged that I would assist those less fortunate by designing spaces with compassion and purpose.
I officially founded Welcome Home Foundation on April 7, 2016, and embarked on a mission to provide pro bono interior design services, encompassing materials, decor, and furniture, specifically tailored for a deserving group: cancer patients and survivors. I want to give them hope, strength, and some light through their darkest moments in life.
In May 2016, I received a dreaded call from my mother’s doctor. “I’m sorry to tell you that… your mother has cancer and is in the terminal phase. Unfortunately, we can’t do anything else for her….”
In December 2016, my mother passed away from stomach cancer. The pain of losing both parents left me in an ocean of grief. Shortly thereafter, I was grappling with the passing of three friends due to cancer.
In my role as an interior designer, my primary focus is crafting environments where clients feel a sense of belonging in their homes, workplaces, or event venues. The indescribable sensation of relief, joy, and serenity evoked by a

thoughtfully designed interior space is truly remarkable. Witnessing the excitement, comfort and tranquility enveloping clients as they behold their transformed spaces is immensely gratifying, affirming that my effort was truly worthwhile.
Now imagine someone who has survived cancer, unexpectedly receiving a call notifying them that they’ve been chosen for a complimentary bedroom makeover—complete with all materials, decorations, and furniture. Reflect on how you would feel in such a situation, grappling with a daunting illness, only to be unexpectedly offered assistance, just by the grace of God. That is precisely the feeling that I have always wanted to give through my works at Welcome Home Foundation.
When my mother received her cancer diagnosis, the doctor advised us that hospice care would be the best option for her. I chose to reside in the hospice alongside her, wanting to remain by her side until her final moments. It was a difficult time, compounded by the frequent experience of witnessing the passing of other residents. Yet, this shared grief forged strong bonds with their families. Despite knowing their inevitable fate, I endeavored to make the bedrooms of my departed friends more inviting and comforting, offering warmth during their final days.
In 2017 and early 2018, I experienced severe health challenges. Following numerous blood tests and X-rays, doctors discovered malignant cells in my body that posed a potential risk of cancer. Surgery was recommended as the next step. However, upon returning to the hospital the following week to schedule the procedure, the X-ray images from the previous week revealed no traces of the identified cells. They had vanished. This miraculous turn of events felt like an intervention from God, and most definitely was a second chance in life.
Throughout the eight to ten years that I have dedicated to this deeply touching endeavor, I have continually witnessed the profound significance and transfor-

mative impact of a thoughtfully designed bedroom for a patient. This journey has taught me invaluable lessons in tolerance, patience, empathy, and understanding. The expressions of gratitude on their faces speak volumes; knowing that a stranger has taken the time to enhance their surroundings brings solace amidst the uncertainty and pain, even in their final moments. Despite the challenges, they depart with hearts brimming with joy, reassured that they are not forgotten by God. This is the essence of our mission at the Welcome Home Foundation - Curacao. That’s the Welcome Home Foundation – Curacao experience.
Throughout the years, I’ve come across cases ranging from five-year-old children to adults, each presenting their own unique needs, personalities, and situations. The process is simple, yet complicated and emotional, as we never know whom we’ll encounter or the conditions in which they’ll be living. Operating through word-of-mouth referrals, every new patient interaction unfolds organically. We arrange a visit to their location, engage in comprehensive conversations, and assess the bedroom’s layout. Taking careful note of the patient’s preferences and favored colors, we gain insight into the design direction we aim to pursue.
Now the work starts since we must approach several entities for funding or donation of materials and decor to make each makeover possible. That is a challenge, but with the cooperation of different helping hands and kind hearts, we can give hope and provide happiness to various cancer patients and survivors.
Upon securing the requisite funds and materials, we start shopping for the items. Throughout, we maintain open communication with the client, providing regular updates on progress. Once all supplies are procured, a makeover date is set. Collaborating closely with either the Marriott Resort or Papagayo Beach Resort and Kura Botanika in Curaçao, we arrange for the cancer patient and their companion to enjoy an all-inclusive weekend stay. The attentive staff at these prestigious resorts ensure they feel
thoroughly pampered, catering gracefully to their every need throughout their stay.
The design of each bedroom depends on the client’s mood, needs, and preferred colors. It’s important to create a calming ambiance for the client to promote their healing and recovery. If they are in a terminal phase, at least this gives them peace and comfort.
Residing on a tropical island, our affinity for vibrant hues is reflected in the bold colors prevalent in my designs. Embracing our culture’s penchant for flexibility and adaptability, we do not like bulky furniture fixtures such as wall-mounted cabinets, preferring designs that allow for movement and occasional rearrangement. However, navigating the challenge of importing furniture and décor, often at higher costs compared to mainland counterparts, is a reality we confront. Nonetheless, we remain committed to delivering exceptional designs within the constraints of our island environment, ensuring our clients’ satisfaction.
In my design process, I carefully consider the entirety of the situation, acknowledging the challenges and uncertainties facing the patient and their loved ones. This has a huge impact on the design, since as you can imagine, after many doctor’s appointments, surgeries, and chemotherapy treatments, understandably, these patients arrive home feeling fatigued, in pain, and needing rest. So, each decision or design is not taken or done lightly. It must be something lasting for the patients to enjoy.
Our aspiration and objective are to extend happiness to additional cancer patients and survivors, both within Curacao and beyond, including the United States. Having experienced the loss of family members and friends to cancer in the USA, it is my desire to pay tribute to them by spreading this noble initiative within the American community. Numerous stores offer an array of decorative items, providing ample materials for crafting exquisite designs.
In pursuit of this objective, we require a larger budget. To address this, I’ve introduced my own line of sneakers called “I Will Survive!” offering a range of models tailored for both men and women. Whether one prefers vibrant colors or a more neutral, nature-inspired palette, our collection caters to diverse tastes. Crafted with meticulous care using premium leather and suede sourced from Italy, renowned for its craftsmanship and high-quality materials - each pair handmade to perfection. We offer worldwide shipping, including free delivery from Italy to the USA, Europe, Canada, and the UK.
Each sneaker has a personified name, theme, and unique color combination, meticulously created and chosen to cater and speak to each individual’s personal level. Through this meticulous process, we aim to design not just sneakers, but a meaningful experience that supports a good cause. Cancer doesn’t take a break, neither does Welcome Home Foundation – Curacao.

PRESIDENT,
INTENTIONAL ENTERTAINMENT
by Ann Marie Bryan
32 VBD Magazine LITERARY DEN
Step into the captivating world of Colette R. Harrell, where inspirational romantic thrillers come alive with flawed yet relatable characters traversing through a whirlwind of emotions and suspenseful twists. As a talented author, Colette weaves tales of imperfect individuals entangled in a web of angst, passion, and daring heroics, often finding themselves in perilous predicaments only heavenly intervention can resolve. But Colette’s talents don’t stop there; she dons various hats as a developmental editor, literary events facilitator, screenwriter, and esteemed board member of the Ohio Writers Association.
As a featured author in VBD Magazine, Colette shares her insights into the art of storytelling, offering readers a glimpse into her captivating process and the driving forces behind her compelling narratives. When she’s not penning her next masterpiece, you can find Colette indulging in her love for cheesecake, embracing frosty mornings under warm blankets, and losing herself in the pages of a captivating book—despite the inevitable battle with sleep.
JOURNEY TO AUTHORSHIP
Colette’s journey into the world of storytelling was not merely a choice but a calling deeply embedded within her soul. With the heart of a griot, she masterfully crafts narratives that resonate with readers on profound levels, infusing her tales with layers of meaning and emotions. As she eloquently puts it, “My journey as a writer began with a deep-rooted passion for storytelling. I blend different genres to create inspirational and motivational stories that imbue hope in any situation. I believe great writers read. I am addicted, and the more I attend classes and write, the more I see areas where a touch here and there could help a book soar.”
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic marked a significant turning point in Colette’s career. During the quarantine, she found herself diving into the world of developmental editing, a venture that seamlessly aligned with her fervor for refining narratives. “With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, my develop-
mental editing business was organically birthed,” she reveals.
CRAFTING MASTERPIECES
Colette embraces the spontaneity of a pantser while maintaining a semblance of structure to her craft. Her writing process, fueled by consistency and creativity, allows her narratives to unfold. “I’m a pantser who outlines in my head,” she discloses, highlighting the delicate balance between spontaneity and structure in her approach. “I write from Monday through Friday; this consistency is essential for making progress on my writing projects.”
Colette’s literary journey is adorned with themes of love, forgiveness, and acceptance, woven intricately to transcend societal barriers and touch the hearts of readers from all walks of life. “My author life is governed by my passion for writing and my commitment to continuous improvement. For me, writing is not just about creating captivating stories, but also about leaving a legacy of entrepreneurship for future generations. I want to present diverse experiences and perspectives in an inspirational way.”
The Devil Made Me Do It, and Tell The Truth, The Devil Won’t, Colette’s first two novels, were traditionally published. Her first indie-published book, Later,
debuted as a number one new release on Amazon and Conversations Magazine, Inc. listed it in the Top 40 Fiction Books of 2022. Later explores the intricacies of love, spanning across time, and defying all odds. Inspired by a moment of introspection during Colette’s recovery from surgery, the novel encapsulates the essence of hope and the belief that true love transcends barriers.
In 2016, Colette participated in her first anthology, When She Loves, and in 2023, she coordinated and developmentally edited the anthology The Gift of Freedom. “My fourth novel, Chasing Different, is book one of a trilogy. It will be released in June 2024. My achievements keep me humble and encourage me to keep pushing for excellence because my readers deserve it. Usually, I end my stories with ‘Happily Ever After’ because I believe the world is difficult enough.”
EMPOWERING WRITERS
For aspiring authors, Colette offers sage advice rooted in her own experiences. “Never stop learning your craft and find your tribe. Writing can be a very solitary endeavor, but if you find your tribe, it can shift your trajectory. At any age, we need a village. I want to thank my family, friends, and fellow literary circle - all making my village complete.”

LITERARY VENTURES
Colette’s commitment to fostering literary excellence extends beyond her novels. Organizing retreats has long been a passion, stemming from her early days co-facilitating women’s Christian and forgiveness retreats. However, her latest endeavor transcends mere relaxation; it’s a luxurious fusion of pampering and honing one’s craft, perfectly tailored for writers seeking inspiration. “I am now organizing luxury writing retreats because as an author, I know how hard it is to find the time to both pamper yourself and hone your craft.”
VIP RETREAT
Set against the backdrop of tranquility and creativity, the 2024 Colette Harrell Literary VIP Retreat promises an unparalleled experience for attendees. Featuring esteemed guests such as renowned Author Victoria Christopher Murray and Media Personality Cyrus Webb, this exclusive weekend retreat is a rare opportunity for writers to immerse themselves in a world of learning and networking. This event will kick-off on Friday, August 23, 2024, at The Werner House Historic Mansion, in Columbus, Ohio.
But the indulgence doesn’t stop there. “As part of the weekend, a one-day pass will be issued for a Writer’s Brunch where an additional forty people will learn from authors Murray, Webb, and others. Webb will not only teach book marketing strategies, but will also interview all attendees and showcase their books on his Amazon Live Show and on iHeart Radio. Culinary delights crafted by best brunch Chef Robbie will accompany engaging discussions and networking sessions.”
HERITAGE AND CREATIVITY
Before the VIP Retreat kicks off, Colette is partnering with the Columbus Metropolitan Public Library to present the inaugural Juneteenth BASH, a celebration of black authors and their rich cultural heritage. With free vendor tables and a focus on creating themed anthologies, this festival-type event aims to foster community and creativity within the literary world.
SUPPORTING THE ARTS
“I went to a writers’ conference in Las Vegas, where authors were advised to think of their artistry as a business. This made sense, but I knew I had to be intentional, so in 2018, I launched Intentional Entertainment, LLC.”
Through the company’s establishment, Colette became a multifaceted entrepreneur dedicated to supporting fellow artists. Offering services ranging from developmental editing to coaching and retreat facilitation, Colette’s commitment to nurturing creativity and community shines through her endeavors.
ON THE HORIZON
“I’m looking forward to everything God has for me,” says Colette. “I’m now writing screenplays. I’m having a blast.”

“Y
ou don’t have to be in your 20s, 30s and 40s to fall in love... it’s never too late to fall in love.” ~ W. Parks Brigham
A native Houstonian, W. Parks Brigham has developed a passion for storytelling infused with love, authenticity, positive characterization, and a sense of community. After a fulfilling career as an educator, she now dedicates her time to crafting books that move her readers. An avid reader herself, Brigham enjoys exploring various genres, particularly African American Romance. Through her novels, she endeavors to portray plussize heroines with grace, confidence, and high self-esteem. With each story, she seeks to impart valuable lessons of love, acceptance, and empowerment, while making her mark in the literary space.
In this illuminating interview, the accomplished author graciously shares her motivations, writing process, and aspirations. With candor, Brigham invites readers into her creative world, offering glimpses of her dedication to fostering inclusivity and representation in literature.
WRITING JOURNEY
Brigham’s journey into writing came from the realization that the stories she read were missing a crucial element— the representation of plus-size women as heroines. Fueled by her passion for love stories and a desire for more diverse narratives, she took matters into her own hands. “I decided to pen my first novel featuring a plus-size heroine,” she explains, “and the rest is history.”
I’VE COME TO UNDERSTAND THE IMMENSE VALUE OF HAVING A MENTOR TO ACCOMPANY ME ON THIS CHALLENGING JOURNEY.
INSPIRATION TO WRITE
“Readers are my biggest inspiration,” says Brigham. With characters constantly clamoring for their stories to be told, Brigham finds herself immersed in a world where imagination meets reality. Her novels span multiple genres, but she prefers to categorize them as Women’s Fiction and Romance, always with a touch of sweetness.
As a self-published author, Brigham has carved her path in the publishing industry. When asked about her publishing company, she humbly acknowledges being a one-woman show. “I am a self-published author,” she states, highlighting the independence and creative control that comes with it.
THE POWER OF MENTORSHIP
Brigham has two goals, to reach more readers and continue sharing her talent with the world. She is thankful for her readers, authors, mentors, and others who have inspired her to aim higher and strive for excellence in her writing career.
“I’ve come to understand the immense value of having a mentor to accompany me on this challenging journey,” says Brigham. “It’s incredible how much practical advice and encouragement a mentor can offer, helping me refine my craft and to navigate the publishing world. I’ve been fortunate to find an exceptional mentor in LaShaunda C. Hoffman. With her impressive background as a bestselling author, book promotion strategist, and the host of SORMAG’s Writer’s Cafe Podcast, LaShaunda brings a wealth of knowledge to our interactions.”
PASSION AND PERSISTENCE
From her extensive experience, Brigham offers helpful advice to aspiring authors:
l Read extensively in your chosen genre.
l Start writing; every word you write is a step closer to your goals.
l Seek guidance from experienced authors.
l Stay open to feedback. Develop a thick skin and use constructive criticism to your advantage.
l Build a book launch team.
l Find a mentor.
BEYOND WRITING
Brigham’s aspirations extend beyond writing captivating tales. Her characters, she emphasizes, are not seeking validation from others but love for who they are—a message of empowerment and acceptance. Through her novels, she not only entertains but also uplifts and inspires. With over thirty plus heartfelt tales to her name, she lures readers into a world where love knows no boundaries and self-acceptance reigns supreme.

Unexpected Love Series A Second Chance Series
WRITING AS A BUSINESS
TOOLS FOR CRAFTING A LEGACY THROUGH WRITING
by W. Mason Dunn
As Christian writers, we have a unique opportunity to use the pen as a vehicle for both creative expression and financial stewardship. The question then becomes how do we weave our passion for writing into a viable path of wealth creation while maintaining our commitment to our Christian principles? Let’s explore a few tools that help us to balance our craft and the calling to build a legacy that resounds beyond our stories.
WRITING AS A BUSINESS
Managing your writing as a business allows us to monetize our skills and invest in our literary career for the long term. This includes the vision, mission, strategic planning, and goal setting. Vision and mission set the overall path for our business. Goals and strategies form the day-to-day projects we complete to reach our vision and mission. When we know what we want to accomplish, we can choose projects that lead us toward that vision.
DIVERSIFICATION OF INCOME STREAMS
Strategically expanding our business into products, services, or markets reduces risks and captures new opportunities. For writers this means including options like book sales, speaking engagements, freelance writing, etc. If we have
several sources of income, and one source ends, we still have others. In addition, when we diversify writing projects, we grow our business and expand our skills.
FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP IN BOOK PUBLISHING
A simple internet scroll will reveal a plethora of companies offering to produce and market books for a various range of prices. One way to manage cost is to create a detailed cost comparison of each step that goes into publishing and promoting your books, then choose the options that meet your budget criteria. We can cut cost and boost revenue by learning to do some things ourselves.
NETWORKING AND COLLABORATIONS
Utilize the value of building connections by actively engaging with the writing community. This will open avenues for joint projects, speaking engagements, and other income-generating opportunities that align with our values.
As sited, treating writing as a business, diversifying streams of income, financial stewardship, and networking are only a few of the tools we can implement to create wealth as Christian authors. Remember 1 Peter 4:10 (KJV) “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”

Tonya Franklin
A CANDID CONVERSATION ON WRITING, PUBLISHING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP
by Beverlyn Johnson Wilks
VBD Magazine is excited to turn the spotlight on Tonya Franklin, a bestselling author, speaker, and empowerment visionary. Tonya graciously shares her insights into her writing career, the creation of Imani Blue Books and Press, and invaluable advice for aspiring authors.
In Tonya, we find not just a gifted author but an expert at inspiration and mentorship, revealing the path for aspiring authors to navigate their literary journeys. As her narrative unfolds, it’s clear that her impact reaches beyond her books, leaving an indelible imprint on the publishing industry.
WRITING AMBITIONS
Reflecting on her journey, Tonya recalls, “Writing has always been a creative outlet for me. As a child, I was very different in how I thought from my peers, so writing was my way of expressing myself. I wrote my first book at 15, a love story about one of my high school friends and a boy she had a crush on.” Although unpublished, this marked the genesis of her storytelling prowess. In 2015, Tonya embarked on her publishing journey armed with determination and a penchant for self-expression.
“I thought being a published author was beyond me,” she reveals. Undeterred by traditional barriers, she self-published her debut book on customer service, igniting a trailblazing path in the literary world. Since then, she has penned nine books, including the award-winning and international bestselling novel Devil in Disguise.
MY ADVICE TO AN ASPIRING AUTHOR IS TO NETWORK, NETWORK, AND NETWORK. LEARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN ABOUT YOUR GENRE, OTHER SUCCESSFUL AUTHORS, AND GET TO KNOW READERS. THE BEST WAY TO SUCCEED IS TO BE A GROWING STUDENT OF YOUR CRAFT.
40 LITERARY DEN VBD Magazine
“In 2017, Devil in Disguise was nominated for two Building Relationships Around Books (BRAB) awards for Best Christian Fiction Novel and Best Villain in a Novel. Then, in 2022, I won the Best Christian Fiction Novel “It’s All in a Book” award. Also in 2022, I joined the 90 Days of Biblical Affirmation for Christian Women in Business and Ministry anthology project with the Herpreneur Network and became a national bestselling author.”
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
Tonya, a self-proclaimed freeform writer, elucidates her unconventional writing process. “I don’t really have a strategic method to my writing,” she admits. Instead, her creativity flows organically, sparked by diverse stimuli. “My brain is weird like that. Anything can trigger a thought or a question about a scenario or a possible character.”
IMANI BLUE BOOKS & PRESS
Driven by a desire to empower aspiring authors, Tonya established Imani Blue
Books & Press. Delving into her motivation, she shares, “I am a part of various business groups and one of the main challenges these business owners have is marketing. With so much information easily accessible on the internet, it is easy for people to get caught up with false information. Through my own stumbles and experiences, I wanted to help people understand what marketing is and how to implement the basics in their own businesses. I hope that readers can take these tools and apply them to their businesses and brands to serve their customers and generate sales.
“One of the things startup authors struggle with is having access to resources. With limited capital, they tend to have a dream and a great idea but become discouraged because they’re looking at others’ success and feel like their dream of becoming a published author will never happen. I established Imani Blue to help aspiring authors become self-published authors. I provide them with the tools and services
they need to get their books sold. We provide marketing, brand development, public relations, event management and marketing services. We also consult with clients on the best platform for them to self-publish. Self-publishing has become a ‘thing’ now, and we want to help clients be able to maximize their experience as a self-published author in any way possible.”
ADVICE FOR EMERGING AUTHORS
Tonya dispenses invaluable counsel to emerging authors, emphasizing the significance of networking and continual growth. She also underscores the importance of defining one’s unique path to success, cautioning against the pitfalls of comparison.
“My advice to an aspiring author is to network, network, and network. Learn as much as you can about your genre, other successful authors, and get to know readers. The best way to succeed is to be a growing student of your craft.”
LOOKING AHEAD
Tonya reveals exciting ventures on the horizon. “I will be officially launching Imani Blue Publishing,” she announces, poised to extend her imprint’s reach. With the second installment of her acclaimed series underway, along with novellas in progress, Tonya’s literary journey shows no signs of slowing down.

CRAFTING IMAGINATIVE WORLDS FOR YOUNG MINDS
Annette Bentley-Smith
by Beverlyn Johnson Wilks
42 LITERARY DEN VBD Magazine
Annette Bentley-Smith stands out as an extraordinary children’s book author. With a boundless imagination, she dedicates herself to crafting stories for kids aged 6-12 and developing products like Kobe’s Story-Time PlushTales, which promote comfort, wellness, and education.
Drawing inspiration from her roles as a wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as her diverse experiences, from cashier to virtual sales agent, Annette enriches her storytelling to reflect the depth and breadth of her life journey. With each story, she brings her audience into a world where every triumph, struggle, and moment of joy resonates with authenticity.
THE WRITING PROCESS
Annette finds creative solace at home, where she cultivates her ideas. Interestingly, she prefers the tactile connection of pen to paper, fostering a deeper bond with her narratives before transferring them to digital format. With fourteen completed books under her belt, including a series published by AnneCorp Literary Works, Annette’s mission is clear: to educate, entertain, and transport children into enchanting adventures.
“My author journey began with my mother, who ignited my love for written communication through disciplinary letters,” Annette reminisces. “My two sons played pivotal roles in shaping my literary path, too. A daycare incident with my eldest son inspired What Color am I? and a school assignment with my second son led to The Miserable Life of Tac: The Aluminum Can. The arrival of my granddaughter, Melody Rayne, inspired 21 fiction children’s books, with Nyrah’s Bully holding a special place, addressing real-life bullying.
NURTURING YOUNG MINDS
In 2019, Annette was nominated for AMG Heritage Awards’ “Author of the Year.” Her dedication to enriching children’s lives extends beyond the pages of her books. With the creation of Kobe’s Story-Time Plush-Tales, a comforting koala bear that serves as both a plush
companion and a storytelling device, she aims to connect families through the magic of imagination.
“Kobe’s Story-Time Plush-Tales connects families through recorded voices, soothing music, and original stories,” Annette explains. “It’s unique with a USB port for personalization. Kobe holds a book and serves as a plush pillow.
“The books are loved by parents and kids. Kobe serves diverse needs like offering comfort during hospital stays, sensory-friendly design for autistic children, enhancing learning in schools, supporting children of incarcerated or deployed parents, and providing therapeutic benefits in medical settings. Healthcare professionals, retailers, and online communities can contribute to spreading awareness of Kobe’s versatile and impactful role in children’s lives.”

They empower writers to overcome challenges and connect with audiences, making their literary journey fulfilling and rewarding.

CELEBRATING THE LOVE OF READING
USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR
USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Maddrey is a semi-reformed computer geek and homeschooling mother of two who lives in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. When she isn’t writing, Elizabeth is a voracious consumer of books. She loves to write about Christians who struggle through their lives, dealing with sin and receiving God’s grace on their way to their own romantic happily ever after.
In a recent interview with VBD Magazine, Elizabeth discusses her writing journey, offering valuable insights into the inspiration that fueled its creation. Moreover, Elizabeth hinted at what the future holds, teasing potential projects and exciting developments on the horizon. Through her words, she invites readers to join her on a journey of exploration and imagination, promising more fascinating stories.
INSPIRATION TO WRITE
For Elizabeth, writing has been a lifelong passion nurtured by familial encouragement and a deep-seated love for storytelling. “Writing has always been part of my life,” she affirms. “I grew up writing. My mother always wanted to write fiction, but she ended up writing non-fiction. She was a letter-writing queen. And she encouraged my sister and me to write. She’d give us blank journals to fill and then sit and listen as we told her our stories. I enjoyed writing and I still enjoy it for the sake of writing.
“When my eldest son was born, I started to formulate the idea of publishing a book. I finished my first book and spent two-ish years looking for an agent with my hopes pinned on traditional publishing. But gradually during that time, I became more open to the idea of independently publishing.”
Despite initially envisioning a traditional publishing route, Maddrey ultimately embraced independent publishing, a decision that catalyzed her prolific career. With 48 contemporary Christian romance novels under her belt, Elizabeth’s literary legacy is marked by a commitment to authenticity and relatability. “My goals are fairly simple: keep writing the stories that God gives me and pray that He uses them to touch the lives of readers.” Elizabeth

RELATABLE CHARACTERS. REALISTIC FAITH. ROMANTIC EVER-AFTERS.
WRITING PROCESS
In unveiling her writing process, Elizabeth embraces spontaneity over meticulous planning, earning the moniker of a “pantser” within literary circles. Rejecting rigid plot outlines and character analyses, Elizabeth finds liberation in allowing her narratives to unfold.
“I tried for the longest time to plot out novels. When I began writing books, the advice I was given was to do character interviews, multi-page plot outlines, and deep dive into the psychological background of everyone in your book. So, I studiously followed them. And I found that by the time I was half-way through all the pre-work for a book, I was bored. And discouraged. And ready to go do absolutely anything other than write.
“I was complaining to my sister about it, and she said, ‘So don’t do it. Just write.’ I don’t know why that was such a novel idea to me, but it was. And it was gloriously freeing. Over time, I have started to put a tiny bit more ‘plan’ into my books.”
While Elizabeth may start with a mere semblance of structure—a title, character names, and a trope—she immerses herself in the unknown, trusting in the storytelling process to guide her. “It’s all a mystery. I
just sit down with a blank page in front of me and let my fingers go.” Using this fluid approach, Elizabeth discovers the beauty of unscripted tales that captivate readers from start to finish.
EXPLORING A TIMELESS TROPE
In her latest release, The Billionaire’s Wife, Elizabeth explores the timeless trope of “marriage of convenience,” infusing it with her signature blend of depth and emotion. “I wanted to end this series with a marriage of convenience trope. It’s a trope that’s harder for me to write, but so many readers love it that I knew it would be a good way to wrap things up.”
With a desire to challenge herself, she breathes new life into the trope by setting the marriage years in the past, unraveling a tale of reconciliation and rediscovered faith. Through the journey of her characters, Elizabeth imparts a timeless message of grace and second chances. “Jesus always welcomes you back. The heroine believes she’s too far gone to be saved. But that’s not true for her. And it’s not true for anyone.”
ADVICE TO ASPIRING AUTHORS
For aspiring authors, Elizabeth offers invaluable advice honed through years of experience. “My main advice is to find out
what works for you. There are so many voices telling authors that they ‘have to’ do things – many of those voices are conflicting. So, if you’re really new and trying to figure it out, then absolutely try a method, but if it doesn’t work and it feels like you’re just pushing uphill? Stop. Try something else.”
Elizabeth cautions against the allure of instant success and highlights the value of perseverance. “Have realistic expectations. I’ve met too many new authors who have their hearts set on instant success and all that brings. And that… just isn’t likely. No matter how you publish, you’re going to have to work hard for every dollar you earn. The true publishing power houses are the authors who steadily craft quality books and keep putting one foot in front of the other, day after day, year after year.”
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
As Elizabeth sets her sights on the horizon, a new chapter beckons, brimming with promise and possibility. With the decision to embark on a fresh series, she embraces the thrill of creative exploration, while staying true to her genre roots.
“I’m at the point where I’m really focused on starting a new series. I just decided not to do the series that I’d been banking on being next and am twisting in a slightly different direction. Still contemporary Christian romance, but enough of a change that I’m excited to see how it goes.”

PASSION FOR STEM
Tiffani’s author life revolves around her passion for STEM education and women’s empowerment, where her award-winning books provide hands-on learning experiences, real-world relevance, and encourages problem-solving skills. Her books also strive to be inclusive and diverse, featuring characters from different backgrounds and genders, which inspires children to pursue STEM fields regardless of their identity or background.

Their services include ghostwriting, translation, and the creation of beautifully illustrated children’s books, coloring and activity books, novels, and journals. They also provide guidance in writing, publishing, and marketing to ensure a successful outcome as a published author.
STEM CAREERS FROM A TO Z
One of the books Tiffani is most proud of is What Can I Be? STEM Careers from A to Z, a fun and educational children’s book that showcases a wide range of STEM careers. Through this medium, she aims to increase representation in both STEM and literature, where diversity and inclusion is still lacking. During her school visits, she had the opportunity to interact with children who had never met an engineer like herself. In writing this book, she wants children to see themselves represented in the world of STEM, explore their interests and passions, foster curiosity, and dream big about their future careers.
WRITING CAREER
As a STEM children’s author, Tiffani understands the value of simple communication. When we asked her to share tips for building a successful writing career, she shared that it is as simple as 1-2-3:
1. Know Your Target Audience: It’s crucial to understand your target audience’s demographics, interests, and preferences to create content that resonates with them. This knowledge will help you craft stories and characters that captivate and engage your readers and exceed their expectations. She highlights this as one of the most important lessons she learned since becoming an author and entrepreneur. By tailoring her offerings to meet her audience’s needs, she builds strong connections, establishes trust, and fosters loyalty.
2. Establish Effective Marketing: Effective marketing involves developing a strong online presence through social media platforms, author websites, and
email newsletters. Engage with your audience, share updates about your work, and build a community around your writing. Additionally, consider traditional marketing strategies such as book signings, participation in literary events, and collaborations with influencers or other authors to expand your reach.
3. Pursue continuous learning and improvement: This can be pursued by honing your writing skills, reading widely, attending workshops and writing conferences, and seeking feedback from trusted peers or writing groups. Embrace constructive criticism and use it as an opportunity to refine your craft. Stay updated on industry trends, publishing opportunities, and marketing techniques to adapt and thrive in the ever-evolving publishing landscape. She also stays updated with the changing needs of the target audience and this flexibility allows her work to remain relevant.

Therefore, she continues to create valuable content and products for her audience, with a focus on STEM education and family-friendly activities, as shown with her newly released series book in the STEM Crew Kids Adventures series and The STEM Playbook: Turning Family Time Into Fun STEM Activities. She also plans to explore new mediums and platforms to connect with a wider audience, including internationally.
“I’m open to collaborations and partnerships that align with my mission and values, as they can provide fresh perspectives and unique opportunities for growth. Overall, my goal is to continue making a positive impact and inspiring others through my work in the field of STEM education.”

WEALTH-BUILDING FUNDAMENTALS
To improve your financial health and long-term wealth accumulation, Dr. Jennifer recommends three foundational steps that can significantly impact your financial future:
1. Build or Bolster an Emergency Fund
VBD Magazine COVER STORY
2. Pay Down High-Interest Debt
High-interest debt, especially from credit cards, can significantly hamper your ability to save and invest. It can also add unnecessary stress to your life. The interest payments alone can eat into your potential savings, slowing down your financial progress. Prioritizing debt repayment, particularly targeting high-interest debts first, a strategy known as the debt avalanche method, can free up more of your money for saving and investing.
How to Start: List all your debts in order of interest rate, from highest to lowest. Focus on paying as much as you can on the debt with the highest rate while maintaining minimum payments on time with the others. Once the highest is paid off, move to the next, and so on. This is how I paid off 23 credit cards in less than 2 years back in the nineties and early two thousands.
3. Start Investing Early, Even If It’s a Small Amount
Investing can seem intimidating, but thanks to technology and financial products, getting started is easier and more accessible than ever. The key is to start as early as possible to take advantage of compound interest over time. Even small, regular investments can grow significantly.
How to Start: Research low-cost index funds or ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) as a beginner-friendly option. Many platforms allow you to start investing with as little as $5. Consider setting up automatic contributions to make the process consistent and hands-off.
Bonus Tip: Buy an Existing Business and Educate Yourself Financially
While not a direct action with your money, increasing your financial literacy
can profoundly impact how you manage and grow your wealth. Spend some time each week reading financial news, books, or even taking a course on personal finance. This knowledge will empower you to make more informed decisions with your money.
WEALTH-BUILDING STRATEGIES
“I have witnessed first-hand the challenges and barriers to achieving financial independence, through personal experiences or those close to me. These understandings fuel my commitment to empowering others,” Dr. Jennifer shares.
For individuals looking to grow their wealth effectively, she recommends:
1. Set Clear Financial Goals
Start by setting clear, realistic financial goals. Whether it’s saving for retirement, buying a home, buying a business, or funding an education, knowing what you’re working towards can help you to tailor your saving and investment strategies.
2. Create a Budget and Stick to It
A well-planned budget helps you track your spending, save more effectively, and ensure that your money is being used in ways that align with your financial goals. Prioritize saving and investing as part of your budget.
3. Diversify Your Investments
Don’t put all your coins in one basket or bank account. Diversifying your investments across different asset classes (stocks, bonds, real estate, brokerage accounts, crypto, forex, etc.) can reduce risk and improve the potential for returns. Consider your risk tolerance and investment horizon when choosing your investments.
4. Take Advantage of Compound Interest
Start investing as early as possible to take advantage of compound interest. Even small, regular investments can grow significantly over time, thanks to the power of compounding. Educate yourself about the Rule of 72.
5. Invest in Yourself
Since I was 19 years old, I have taken the time to invest in myself. And being in my 50’s, I can see how education and skill development can increase earning potential. Investing in coaches, mentors, courses, certifications, events, books, or even the right degrees can lead to promotions, career advancements, or a successful business.
6. Maximize Retirement Contributions
If you have access to retirement accounts like a 401(k) or an IRA, try to maximize your contributions. Many employers offer matching contributions up to a certain

percentage, which is essentially free money towards your retirement. There are also ways you can maximize your insurance policy if you have the right one. Financial experts can help you in this regard.
7. Seek Professional Advice
Consider consulting with a financial advisor. A professional can offer personalized advice tailored to your financial situation. But don’t just pick any type of financial advisor, you want someone that has done what you would like to do or who has successfully done this for others.
8. Stay Informed and Patient
Patience is key so stay informed about financial markets and investment opportunities but avoid making impulsive decisions based on short-term market fluctuations. Wealth building is a marathon, not a sprint. It is not about emotions it is about emotional intelligence.
BUILDING WEALTH THROUGH REAL ESTATE
With its promise of passive income streams, property appreciation, and tax advantages, it’s no wonder that many individuals are drawn to real estate to accumulate wealth. Here’s a preview into the world of real estate investing through the lens of Dr. Jennifer:
1. Understand Real Estate as an Investment
Real estate can serve as both a passive and active investment, depending on the level of involvement you choose. Passive investments might include Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) or crowdfunding platforms, where you invest money without managing properties directly. Active investments typically
involve purchasing properties directly, whether for rental income, flipping, or development, requiring more time and effort but often yielding higher returns.
2. Getting Started in Real Estate Investing
Educate yourself before diving in and spend time learning about real estate investing. Read books, take courses, and attend seminars or webinars to understand the basics of real estate, different investment strategies, and the risks involved.
3. Evaluate Your Financial Position
Assess your current financial situation. Real estate investing often requires substantial capital for down payments and potential renovations, not to mention a cushion for unexpected expenses. But there are also ways to use other people’s cash to get started.
4. Create a Plan & Start Small
Develop a clear plan outlining your investment goals, strategy,
and criteria for selecting properties. Decide whether you’re focusing on cash flow, appreciation, or a mix of both, and what types of properties you’re interested in.
You don’t need to buy a large apartment building as your first investment. Many of my successful clients start with single-family homes or small multifamily units. These can be easier to manage and finance, offering you a good introduction to real estate investing and then you can build from there.
5. Choose the Right Location
Location is very crucial in real estate. Look for areas with strong growth potential, good schools, low crime rates, and solid employment opportunities, as these factors can affect property values and rental demand.
6. Consider REITs or Crowdfunding
If you’re not ready to purchase property directly, consider investing in REITs or real estate crowdfunding platforms. These options can offer exposure to real estate with a smaller initial investment and less hands-on management. Visit LadiesFirstCapital.com to get details on a fund that helps women and their families invest the right way passively.
7. Network with Experienced Investors
Connect with experienced real estate investors who can offer valuable insights, advice, and potential partnership opportunities. Local real estate investing clubs and online forums are great places to start.
8. Build a Team
Successful real estate entrepreneurs often require a team, including a real estate agent or broker like myself that is experienced in properties, a good mortgage broker, a real estate lawyer, and a property manager if you’re not managing the property yourself.

EMOTIONAL DECISION-MAKING, ESPECIALLY IN RESPONSE TO SHORT-TERM MARKET FLUCTUATIONS, CAN LEAD TO IMPULSIVE CHOICES LIKE PANIC SELLING OR GREEDY BUYING. IT’S IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN A DISCIPLINED, LONG-TERM PERSPECTIVE. REMEMBER TO RAISE YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE RATIO.
9. Do Your Due Diligence
This one is the key. Before making any purchase, thoroughly analyze the property. This includes understanding the local market, calculating potential returns, and inspecting the property for any issues. Visit LadiesFirstCapital.com to get a copy of a full due diligence checklist.
10. Be Prepared for Challenges
Real estate and investing can be rewarding, but it’s not without its challenges. You have market fluctuations, unexpected repairs, and vacancies can affect your returns. Approach investing with patience and be prepared for ups and downs. But also, you have to start before you are ready so don’t just wait for things to happen, you have to get out there and make them happen.
COMMON BLUNDERS
Navigating the financial landscape re quires adaptability and foresight, espe cially when aiming for long-term wealth building. According to Dr. Jennifer, the following are some common pitfalls and mistakes individuals should avoid:
1. Failing to Set Clear Financial Goals
Without specific, measurable, achiev able, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals, it’s easy to lose direction.
Goals provide a roadmap for your financial decisions and help keep you motivated. And remember to keep it super simple as if you are explaining it to a 5th grader.
2. Not Having an Emergency Fund
Skipping the creation of an emergency fund can lead to financial instability. Unexpected expenses, such as medical bills or car repairs, can force you to dip into savings or accumulate high-interest debt.
3. Underestimating the Impact of High-Interest Debt
Carrying high-interest debt, especially from credit cards, can severely hamper wealth accumulation efforts. The longer this debt remains, the more you’ll pay in interest, diverting funds away from savings and investments.
4. Overlooking the Need for a Diverse Investment Portfolio
Putting all your financial eggs in one basket is risky. Diversification across different asset classes can help mitigate risk and reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio.
5. Trying to Time the Market
Attempting to time the market for buying low and selling high is exceedingly difficult, even for professionals. A long-term, consistent investment strategy typically yields better results.
7. Overlooking Insurance Needs
Adequate insurance (life, health, disability) is crucial for financial protection. Without it, unexpected events can quickly deplete savings and investments, derailing your financial plans.
8. Letting Emotions Drive Financial Decisions
Emotional decision-making, especially in response to short-term market fluctuations, can lead to impulsive choices like panic selling or greedy buying. It’s important to maintain a disciplined, long-term perspective. Remember to raise your emotional intelligence ratio.
9. Ignoring Tax Implications
Failing to consider the tax implications of investment choices and financial decisions can lead to inefficient wealth growth. Understanding tax laws and planning accordingly can save you money and maximize your investments’ growth.
10. Lack of Financial Education
Not investing time in financial education can leave you vulnerable to misinformation or poor advice. Continuous learning is key to making informed decisions that align with your financial goals.
11. Not Seeking Professional Advice When Needed
While DIY (doing it yourself) financial planning is possible, complex situations may require professional advice. The

FINANCIAL WISDOM
One of the timeless pieces of advice Dr. Jennifer received was on the importance of starting to save and invest early, no matter how small the amount. “The power of compound interest cannot be overstated,” she says. The Rule of 72 still dominates today. “Even modest contributions, when invested wisely and given enough time, can grow into substantial assets.”
Additionally, Dr. Jennifer encourages a “pay yourself first” mentality. “Prioritizing saving and investing. Treat your financial goals as non-negotiable expenses, akin to rent or utility bills. By setting aside a portion of your income before indulging in discretionary spending, you ensure consistent progress towards your financial objectives.”
OVERCOMING HURDLES
Drawing from her entrepreneurial experience, Dr. Jennifer underscores several key areas warranting attention:
1. Financial Management
One of the most daunting challenges is securing funding and managing finances efficiently. I have many times struggled with cash flow management, raising capital, and budgeting for big ideas and projects that I wanted to produce. So, I created coaching programs to address these very things.
2. Time Management
Time management becomes crucial
in balancing operational tasks, strategic planning, and personal life. Learn to prioritize tasks, delegate when possible, and use tools and technology to automate repetitive tasks. Time management is still a struggle for me sometimes because the sheer volume of work combined with the pressure to wear multiple hats can lead to burnout.
3. Building a Talented Team
Finding and retaining the right people who share my vision of the business has been challenging for me but is critical to its success.

59
I focus on creating a strong culture and brand awareness within my team.
4. Market Competition
Standing out in a crowded market and staying ahead of competitors is a constant challenge so I am always looking at market research, revamping my unique value proposition, and innovating on ideas and strategies. I get feedback from my clients on what they need.
5. Customer Acquisition and Retention
Attracting and retaining customers is essential for growth but can be difficult, especially for new businesses without established reputations. So, I am constantly working to build a strong brand, leveraging social media and content marketing, and providing exceptional customer service.
6. Adapting to Change
I have always tried to stay flexible. Since the entrepreneurial landscape is constantly evolving, I try to adapt to changes in technology, market shifts, and new ideas. I do this by staying informed, being flexible in business planning, and pivoting when necessary. I also network with other entrepreneurs and industry experts to share insights and trends.
7. Self-Doubt and Decision Making
I have often faced times of self-doubt and uncertainty in my decision-making processes, especially in the early stages of my business, so I hired a coach, and joined mentorship and entrepreneurial networks for support. Also, I focused on continuous learning to build my confidence. I had to learn to trust my instincts while also valuing my decision-making.

A LEGACY FAMILY
The tradition of business ownership runs deep in the lineage of Legacy Builder Group LLC’s founders, Marcella and her brother Mark Mollon, spanning generations from their great-grandparents to their children. As siblings born into an entrepreneurial legacy, Marcella and Mark represent the fourth generation of their family’s business pursuits, having
established their financial advisory and wealth management firm 16 years ago.
Raised by immigrant parents from Trinidad and Tobago who chased the American Dream with determination, Marcella and Mark were instilled with a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit from an early age. Their journey began in their parents’ graphic design and sign company, where they learned valuable lessons in entrepreneurship. These formative experiences ignited their passion for expanding their financial knowledge. Through dedicated study and education in legacy planning, asset protection, retirement planning, and behavioral economics, the siblings honed their expertise.
FINANCIAL FREEDOM
The Legacy Builder Group was founded with a clear mission—to help families improve their relationship with money and build wealth with purpose. Through a holistic approach to financial planning and coaching, the company empowers clients to take control of their finances while sustaining healthy money behavior.
At the core of Legacy Builder Group’s offerings is the Family Legacy Experience™. “This is an elite experience that provides in-depth coaching in personal money and family behavior, and multi-generational wealth-building strategies that shift generational cycles,” says Marcella.
“We believe that legacy is how other people will experience your existence and the most impactful ways that our existence is experienced is through the purposeful transfer of both our intellectual and financial assets. We provide families with a blueprint to build and pass on these assets to elevate them and future generations.”
LIFE IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE CHALLENGES THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR GROWTH. I TRY TO FOCUS ON WHAT I AM SUPPOSED TO LEARN THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES RATHER THAN THE CHALLENGES THEMSELVES.
LEGACY BUILDING IS MY PASSION AND WHILE MONEY IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS PROCESS, IT IS ONLY ONE ASPECT.
FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE
“At the heart of financial security is freedom. When you are free from scarcity, and financial uncertainty, there is room for an elevated money mindset and freedom to build a legacy. Legacy building is my passion and while money is an important part of this process, it is only one aspect.”
For Marcella, building wealth is more than just making smart financial decisions—it’s about cultivating the behaviors that sustain long-term financial success.
“As a Behavioral Financial Advisor, I help people develop the behavior that will build their legacy wealth. Why? Because there is no wealth building strategy that works without the discipline and financial intelligence to maintain the process. Financial intelligence is the ability to make smart, responsible, value-based decisions with and about money when faced with difficult and competing emotions. This is where many Americans get stuck. To overcome this pitfall and build true wealth, start with identifying your why which is your purpose for money. Once you understand your purpose for building wealth, then you can make S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) financial goals. Each of these elements can be defined within a comprehensive financial plan. This will help you choose investment strategies that align with your why and remain committed to the wealth building process.”
FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE
“Financial discipline isn’t just about resisting the urge to spend—it’s about attaching true value to financial goals.” Drawing from her expertise as both a Behavioral Financial Advisor and a Certified Flexibility Coach, Marcella highlights the importance of identifying

the why behind financial objectives. By asking critical questions and aligning goals with personal values, individuals can stay motivated and increase their financial discipline.
“Your mind needs to attach value to your goals in order to make them worthy of pursuing. Start with asking yourself this question: ‘Why is this goal important to me and my values?’
“Let’s say your goal is maximum funding your annual IRA contributions or opening a life insurance policy, you would need to identify why it is important for you to accomplish this goal. This is an important question, and answers like, ‘because that’s what I was advised to do,’ aren’t going to fuel your desire to achieve your goals. The key is to identify reasons that have value for you. For example:
“‘I will contribute more towards my retirement because security is one of my values and I want to make sure that when I stop working, I can actually afford to stop working.’ or ‘I will apply for life insurance because family and education are two of my values and I want my kids to know that if anything happens to me, they will still have the means to attend college.’ Attaching true value to your goals will keep you motivated and increase financial discipline.”
NAVIGATING CHALLENGES
In the face of adversity, Marcella finds strength in her sense of purpose and calling to serve others. She views challenges as opportunities for growth, focusing on the lessons they impart rather than the obstacles themselves. “Life is supposed to have challenges that are required for growth. I try to focus on what I am supposed to learn through the tough times rather than the challenges themselves.”

“My secret sauce is helping business owners leverage and scale their businesses while deepening their faith and connection to God,” says Dr. Darnyelle. “The whole reason we did one million dollars in three days in 2014 was because I decided to take a bold stance for God. GROWING IN GRACE
Dr. Darnyelle recounted being born to drug-addicted parents, characterizing her early life as typically chaotic. “When I was six years old, I learned the story surrounding my birth. And while I couldn’t quite comprehend it, one thing was clear: I was born with a purpose.”
Another pivotal moment in Dr. Darnyelle’s childhood occurred when she was 8 years old and her mother’s home was raided, and subsequently, her mother was taken to jail. “I was immediately mad at the world. How was I going to live without my mother? My dad did his best to make

a home for me, but I couldn’t shake my desire to be mad at the world.”
In 5th grade, Mrs. Dixon, one of Dr. Darnyelle’s teachers, helped her discover her purpose. “Mrs. Dixon didn’t perceive me as an angry black girl. She helped me to recognize my potential and purpose. Through an introduction to journaling, my life, which was chaotic at best, suddenly made sense and I realized that my purpose was clear: To use words to change the lives of others. And I set on a path to consume words, because I knew that one day, many lives would depend on the words I would speak.”
CALLED TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP
“I still remember December 17, 2004, like it was yesterday. That was the day that I realized that I wasn’t born to sit behind someone else’s desk. That night, God wouldn’t let me sleep. I awoke very clear that it was my last day at my job.”
“As I drove to work and entered the parking lot, the knot in my stomach became a lump in my throat. By the time I got to my desk, it was clear what I had to do. I typed a quick resignation letter and began to pack up my desk. I didn’t have a plan, I moved because God told me to. And I never looked back.”
INCREDIBLE ONE ENTERPRISES
In 2007, Dr. Darnyelle established Incredible One Enterprises, LLC to offer strategic planning, business consulting, money mindset coaching, keynote speaking, sales optimization, and talent and leadership development.
“I started the company following a successful corporate career and Mary Kay Cosmetics Consultancy. I wanted to
leverage more core gifts and talents to help small business owners build companies that serve them financially and spiritually. We are a business transformation company. We serve small to medium sized companies and corporations. Our work includes a strategic infusion of coaching, consulting, training, and neuroscience based on our proven Move to Millions®, Lead Millions® and Sell Millions® Methods.” Dr. Darnyelle reflected on the early

years of Incredible One Enterprises, acknowledging that they were far from glamorous; instead, they were marked by disappointments, debt, bankruptcy, and overwhelming confusion. “I started to feel like I misheard God and was not supposed to be building this business. I felt like a failure.”
Recounting a particularly challenging period, Dr. Darnyelle said that she sustained herself on a diet of ramen noodles and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a grueling 18 months, all the while striving to avoid the possibility of living out of her Chevy Equinox.
“Against my better judgment and desire, I even ended up going back to work. That job was ordained by God – I ran a women’s business center. Again, the irony that I, who couldn’t excel in her own business, was helping others establish theirs. And I was good, too – growing the program

and outcomes by 68% in the two years I was there. I got to test market my new marketing course too, which was a big hit.
I also learned what I didn’t start my own business knowing and as a result, when I left at the end of 2010, I was better and stronger. I was incredible.
“January 1, 2011 was my first day fulltime in my own company. In every way I was focused on running a business that served me. I hired my first team member, and we were off to the races. My client count grew – from ten to twenty to nearly one hundred and I started holding live events that allowed me to combine my two loves—speaking and community building. It only took 3 years full-time to cross the million-dollar mark in my own business.
“Today, I make it my mission to help others do the same in less time than it took me. In fact, over the last 10 years, I have helped my clients generate more than $1/2B in sales and more than $378M in revenue by teaching my award-winning Move to Millions® Method.
“I equip business owners to collapse the amount of time it takes them to make $100,000 - from six figure years to six figure quarters to six figure months, then six figure weeks and ultimately six figure days in record time all while deepening their connection to God and strengthening their faith. Our clients grow their businesses by 200% or more in a year and move further up the Move to Millions® Continuum and I couldn’t feel more grateful and excited to serve them.”
MOVE TO MILLIONS®
Dr. Darnyelle is a seven-time bestselling author, the creator of five powerful business systems and the host of the MOVE To Millions Business Podcast. “I created the MOVE to Millions Podcast for one reason—to normalize wealth and legacy

for today’s entrepreneur. This podcast will help millions-minded entrepreneurs and business owners navigate the journey to and beyond the million mark.”
Now Dr. Darnyelle is introducing the world to the book she was born to write, Move to Millions®. “This book will give a step-by-step framework to bring your dream to life and position you to sustain it for years to come!”
UNDERSTANDING MONEY
“I believe that access to millions is an inherent birthright and helping people understand money – what it means and how to master it is the key to building generational trajectory shifting wealth. Statistically, 60% of adults live paycheck to paycheck and 92% of employees struggle with financial stress. Incorporating financial literacy in our work has been a game changer.”
Dr. Darnyelle emphasized the importance of understanding money as the foundational step towards financial empowerment. She noted that many individuals are conditioned with money beliefs that are not rooted in factual evidence, and these beliefs often shape their relationship with money. Dr. Darnyelle stressed the significance of addressing and reshaping these money beliefs to establish habits aligned with the truth about money.
“Once you have dealt with your money beliefs, you can establish habits based on the truth about money. To make money move (it’s currency and is always flowing),
you must invest and be investable. So, understanding that money is not just for paying bills is a first step. Wealthy people understand that money’s purpose is to use it to create more money. This is the key to building wealth that you can sustain.”
UNLOCKING FINANCIAL FLOW
Leveraging money is the cornerstone of sustainable wealth building. Here are Dr. Darnyelle’s suggestions for unlocking your financial flow:
1. Learn to understand what money really is and how it works.
2. Recognize that money is an energy, and it never stops flowing. If it’s not flowing to you, it’s because you aren’t in alignment with it.
3. Find purpose for your money—when the purpose is clear, based on abundance, money will flow in to fulfill the purpose.

Reflecting on the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey, Dr. Hawkins shares, “With hindsight, I would focus more on digital marketing, seek mentorship earlier, and invest more in technology to streamline operations. My mission at the start of developing my company was to solve money problems and provide basic financial literacy education to those in need. Over time, my priorities have remained steadfast.”
When asked about her passion for helping others create financial security, Dr. Hawkins speaks from the heart. “My passion stems from personal experiences with financial hardship and the recognition of the widespread need for financial literacy. I want to see individuals and communities thrive economically.”
KEYS TO FINANCIAL SUCCESS
Dr. Hawkins emphasizes three crucial steps individuals can take today to start building a solid financial foundation:
1. Start an Emergency Fund: Prepare for the unexpected by setting aside funds for emergencies.
2. Pay off High-Interest Debt: Prioritize debt repayment to reduce financial burdens and interest payments.
3. Invest in Financial Education: Equip yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed financial decisions.
Additionally, she offers three tips for saving each month:
1. Automate Savings: Set up automatic transfers to a separate savings account.
2. Review Expenses: Identify and eliminate unnecessary subscriptions and expenses.
3. Set a Budget: Establish a budget for discretionary spending and stick to it diligently.
FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE
Maintaining financial discipline is crucial on the path to prosperity. Dr. Hawkins recommends waiting 48 hours before making non-essential purchases, distinguishing between wants and needs, and setting clear financial goals to stay focused.
“The best financial advice that I have ever received is to invest in yourself and I tell my clients this all the time.”
LESSONS LEARNED
Dr. Hawkins acknowledges the importance of learning from mistakes. “Every entrepreneur faces setbacks,” she admits. “For me, learning involves recognizing the importance of delegation, the value of customer feedback, and the need for financial prudence.”
In challenging times, Dr. Hawkins relies on self-care and mental health practices to persevere. Work-life balance is key, alongside mindfulness and meditation to stay grounded. She also emphasizes seeking support from communities or professionals when needed. “Motivation during tough times for me is driven by a strong belief in my mission, the support of a community, and remembering past successes and challenges that I had overcome.”
INDUSTRY STARTER TIPS
For those starting in the financial industry, Dr. Hawkins advises understanding financial markets and regulations, which lays a solid foundation. Building a robust network of mentors and peers provides invaluable guidance and support. Additionally, she stresses the importance of continuous learning and adaptability to navigate evolving landscapes.
MY PASSION STEMS FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WITH FINANCIAL HARDSHIP AND THE RECOGNITION OF THE WIDESPREAD NEED FOR FINANCIAL LITERACY. I WANT TO SEE INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES THRIVE ECONOMICALLY.
When it comes to pursuing her passion, Dr. Hawkins relies on three favorite tools to excel. First, a financial planning software streamlines her processes, ensuring efficiency and accuracy in managing finances. Second, educational platforms serve as invaluable resources for continuous learning, allowing her to stay updated on industry trends and best practices. Finally, community forums and networks offer unparalleled support and advice, fostering collaboration and sharing of insights among like-minded individuals.
LOOKING AHEAD
Dr. Hawkins remains committed to expanding her reach and impact. ESTABLISHING SD ENTERPRISES

“I founded SD Enterprises first and foremost to create a legacy for my children
where they would never have to tell the story that their mother chose her career over them. I also wanted to tangibly demonstrate that having a family and marriage does not have to come at the cost of living out your purpose. At SD Enterprises, Dr. Dean emphasizes the importance of five key pillars: Marketing, Messaging, Marriage, Me (Selfcare), and Management. By nurturing these pillars, individuals can unlock new levels of impact and income while maintaining balance in their lives. Dr. Dean’s holistic approach ensures that success is not just about financial gain but about fulfillment in every aspect of life.
“The end goal is for my children and all women to know that with the right vision, you absolutely can have it all - family, fulfillment, flourishing finances, and a legacy that resonates the same sentiment when your work on earth is done.”
FINANCIAL FREEDOM
Dr. Dean’s passion extends beyond mere success; it lies in empowering others—especially women—to achieve financial freedom.
“For too long, women have been forced to choose between pursuing their dreams or purposes and raising a family or having a thriving marriage. Convincing women that their only acceptable role was marriage and motherhood has stifled talents, silenced voices, and denied society of some of the most valuable assets.
“As someone who serves powerhouse women who are making millions, mastering motherhood, and maintaining thriving marriages, I continue to defy this notion. With the right financial framework and support, it’s achievable. When you have finances secured, you have time freed up to devote energy towards family, community, business - whatever speaks to your God-given purpose.”
WEALTH-BUILDING STRATEGIES
When it comes to building wealth, Dr. Dean offers invaluable insights rooted in years of experience.
1. Understand the power of investing versus just saving money. Don’t get me wrong; having savings set aside for emergencies and short-term goals is vitally important. However, investing is what unlocks exponential growth and compound interest over
SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS
REQUIRES MORE THAN JUST HARD WORK. PRIORITIZE REST AND REJUVENATION TO MAINTAIN OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE AND AVOID BURNOUT.
decades. Even small, regular contributions toward stocks, bonds, real estate, or business ventures that earn annual returns will far outpace interest earned in a traditional savings account.
2. Develop multiple streams of passive and residual income. Relying solely on wages or salary limits wealth accumulation. True financial freedom emerges when money is coming in from diverse sources like royalties, dividends, and rentals that require little ongoing maintenance from you. The more income streams, the more wealth compounding can take effect.
3. Leverage the time value of money as early and often as possible. Simply put, money now is more valuable than the same amount decades later due to how interest and investments can grow exponentially over time. Whether saving for retirement, college funds, or seed money for a business, investing funds as young as financially possible is a proven wealth-building strategy.
BUILDING FOR SUCCESS
Dr. Dean’s journey offers three valuable lessons for anyone seeking to achieve holistic success:
1. Define your own path. There’s a popular template for success pushed by the mainstream. But there is also a right way specifically for you. The right path comes not by copying others’ paths, but from getting aligned with your unique instinctive talents and values. Define success on your terms - not just monetary goals but alignment with faith, family, and relationships centered as priorities. Structure a business fueled by your innate, intuitive strengths while leveraging skills.
The right way is authentically aligned not just with your monetary goals but
also with the things and people that are most important to you. The right way is building in alignment with your instinctive conative behaviors not just your cognitive behaviors or skill sets.
2. Prioritize family. Success should never come at the expense of precious moments with loved ones. Keep your priorities in check and ensure your ambitions align with your familial responsibilities. Be mindful of the ammunition behind your ambition. Whenever you find that you no longer prioritize precious family moments because you’re hustling for clients or your health is suffering, something needs realigning.
Revisit those spaces in need of healing. Then, structure things to balance family time with the work you feel called to do. Remember, you should be fueled first and foremost by caring for your loved ones, not old pains. The goal is purpose plus productivity with room for what matters.
1. Embrace rest.
Sustainable success requires more than just hard work. Prioritize rest and rejuvenation to maintain optimal performance and avoid burnout.
We produce our best creative solutions, strategic decisions, and inspired ideas when our whole selves show up. That’s why building in rest, reflection, and recovery practices to rejuvenate your capacities is just as crucial as the intensity of your business growth strategies.
Rather than hustling nonstop, take time to reconnect with activities that support mental clarity, emotional stability, physical capacity, and spiritual alignment. If you do this at your foundational level, you’ll find it easy to scale and grow without being overwhelmed.
BEST FINANCIAL ADVICE
“The best advice I’ve ever received is to not increase your lifestyle costs in tandem with revenue increases. In my culture, we are often taught debt-building rather than wealth-building habits. With every pay raise, there can be pressure to
72 VBD Magazine STAR POWER LIST
purchase new status symbols like cars, homes, and clothing that portray an appearance of success. As a result, it’s easy to spend more than you earn and fail to make your money work for you over the long term. The save-but-don’tinvest mindset is common as well. This leaves many unprepared for economic downturns or periods of slow growth because there are no assets or capital to fall back on after spending every new dollar earned.
“When I was advised not to lifestyle creep with each raise, it stuck with me. This approach taught me financial resilience in
every season by spending less than I make and continually finding ways to grow my money outside of traditional work. It’s about understanding the power of compound growth on assets over decades. With this long-term, wealth-oriented perspective, I can still enjoy my money today yet ensure financial security well into the future.”
ACHIEVING HOLISTIC SUCCESS
Dr. Dean’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of balance as she continues to pave the way for individuals to achieve holistic success, one step at a time.
“Success to me is leaving a legacy beyond money that includes happy marriages where spouses fully trust, love, and support each other; strong family bonds nurtured through unconditional love and support; mental, emotional, and spiritual health, fully showing up for my children’s milestones and memories; and centering my family on a foundation of faith rooted in God.
“Specifically, I envision my great-great grandchildren telling stories of enduring love, faith and fortitude that flowed down from me as the matriarch. It’s building an authentically aligned business model that doesn’t require me to deny myself, my truth, or my loved ones. Success is putting structures and mindsets in place for generations knowing that no matter the trials or triumphs, we can overcome anything with God as our guide.
“Additionally, success means living a life that leaves an impact and imprint in the world that changes lives for the better, long after I’m gone. My sign of success would be hearing reflections like:
“My mother was so blessed.”
“She changed my life.”
“A real woman of God.”
“One of a kind.”
“The best wife in the world. I fully trusted her.”
“The best mom. I could always depend on her.”

As Dr. Ranelli aptly puts it, “Building wealth is absolutely a gradual process. It takes developing wealthy habits that become your guidebook over time and consistently making financial decisions that are tied to your core values and vision for your life.”
Delving deeper into the passion behind empowering others to achieve financial security, Dr. Ranelli’s sentiment is deeply personal. “Because I know how miserable and stressful it can be when financial security is not in place, and I don’t wish that on anyone. Stable finances contribute to stability in other areas of our lives. When people manage money appropriately it allows them to fund their dreams and be able to give more generously.”
WINNING WITH YOUR MONEY
For Dr. Ranelli, financial success does not have to be in the future. Here are strategies to begin practicing today to make a difference in your financial world:
1. Recognize that money is a tool and each of us needs to be the master of our money rather than having money master us. Resolve this by identifying a clear purpose for money.
VBD Magazine 75 STAR POWER LIST
2. Create a budget (spending plan). Tell every dollar where to go because if we don’t it will go places we did not intend or that are not aligned with our purpose and values.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, remember that asking for help is a sign of strength.
EMPOWERING FINANCIAL LITERACY
Dr. Ranelli’s literary endeavors highlight her commitment to inspiring others in their pursuit of financial independence. Through her insightful writings, she not only shares practical steps to help readers step out on faith but also provides guidance for individuals striving to achieve their own financial goals.
I KNOW HOW MISERABLE AND STRESSFUL IT CAN BE WHEN FINANCIAL SECURITY IS NOT IN PLACE, AND I DON’T WISH THAT ON ANYONE. STABLE FINANCES CONTRIBUTE TO STABILITY IN OTHER AREAS OF OUR LIVES. WHEN PEOPLE MANAGE MONEY APPROPRIATELY IT ALLOWS THEM TO FUND THEIR DREAMS AND BE ABLE TO GIVE MORE GENEROUSLY.
“In 2014, I published my first book, Releasing the Fear and Walking in Faith, and since then I have participated in 10 anthologies,” Dr. Ranelli reveals. “I’m a 10-times Amazon bestselling author. In 2016, my first book which was solo written was revised to include testimonies of several women.”
Dr. Ranelli will be releasing WEALTHY Habits: A Beyond the Numbers Guide to Mastering Your Money, her second solo book, in August 2024. This book was inspired by her journey of mismanaging money and accumulating debt, along with the lessons she learned that led to her increased financial health through the elimination of bad money habits. “I realized it was not just in the knowing,” says Dr. Ranelli, “it was in the doing but most importantly in the bad money habits that you learn to eliminate, and the good (wealthy) ones that you seek to employ. I hope readers will feel empowered to be the change that will not only bring financial peace and security in the present but for generations to come.”
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
Reflecting on the early days of their entrepreneurial journey, the transition from understanding accounting to navigating the broader landscape of business presented significant challenges for the power couple.
“Mistakes were inevitable, but they served as invaluable lessons that propelled our growth. One crucial lesson learned was the importance of establishing clear policies and procedures from the outset,” Dr. Ranelli discloses, “even before expanding our team.” This proactive approach, they emphasized, fosters a solid foundation for growth and facilitates smooth transitions as the business expands.
WHAT’S NEXT
When asked about their future, Dr. Ranelli shared their commitment to remaining receptive to divine guidance. “Next for me, is to just continue to make room to be used by God.” She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as one of six speakers for an upcoming evangelistic series from April 5-27, 2024. “I am honored and humbled that He chose me to deliver His message. With this call, I now think of myself as a missionary operating as an accounting and financial coach, and so I am even more open to traveling and sharing a financial (or other) message of hope. I am ready to take my speaking to a new level and empowering audiences worldwide.”
Through their faith-driven approach, Eric and Dr. Ranelli anticipate embracing new opportunities with a sense of purpose to make a positive impact. FREE

Success stories often originate from challenging circumstances, illustrating the impact of resilience and determination.
Lashea Reaves, the founder and executive director of 8 Cents in a Jar, Inc., embodies this principle. Through her journey of overcoming hardship and financial struggle, Lashea has carved out a path to personal success and has dedicated herself to empowering future generations with the tools they need to achieve financial independence.
Lashea resides in the beautiful city of Orlando, FL, and currently works as a Senior Vice President in the financial services industry. In 2007, she graduated from Florida A&M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a minor in Economics. Currently, Lashea is engaged in her community as a member of the Orlando Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc and previously assisted the Central Florida Urban League Young Professionals.
Lashea’s remarkable achievements led to an in-depth interview with VBD Magazine. From discussing her pivotal role in financial literacy for youths to shedding light on her community impact initiatives, Lashea shares candid insights and inspiring anecdotes. Her ability to articulate her experiences and vision underscores her position as a leader in her field.
TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH
Growing up below the poverty line in Riviera Beach, Florida, Lashea’s story begins with unimaginable loss at the tender age of 14 when her mother passed away due to hospital negligence, leaving her father to care for four daughters. Despite winning a substantial settlement from a malpractice lawsuit, financial stability remained elusive, and the family found themselves back in poverty within two years. The challenges only multiplied as Lashea became a single mother at 19, navigating college while raising her daughter and eventually adopting her younger sister after her father’s passing.
Despite facing seemingly insurmountable odds, Lashea refused to be defined by

her circumstances. Lashea’s resilience was tested further during her college years at Florida A&M University as she navigated the challenges of homelessness and financial instability. “I was a college student deep in sorrow and a domestic violence survivor struggling to provide a decent life for my young family,” she
reflects. During that period, she had a pivotal realization: the key to breaking free from the cycle of poverty lay in financial literacy.
Working multiple jobs while pursuing her degree, Lashea immersed herself in personal finance, determined to create

a better life for herself and her family.
“After working three jobs in college and becoming a financial junkie, I purchased my first home as a graduation gift. For the first time in my life, I was no longer a recipient of public assistance,” says Lashea.
EMPOWERING FUTURE GENERATIONS
Armed with the knowledge and experience gained through her journey, Reaves founded the nonprofit 8 Cents in a Jar, Inc. with a simple yet profound mission: to provide young people with the financial education and resources they need to thrive. Lashea’s vision extends beyond just teaching financial literacy; it’s about instilling a mindset of empowerment and possibility. Drawing from her struggles and triumphs, she established a comprehensive program to teach students the fundamentals of saving, investing, and building wealth, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
“I created 8 Cents in a Jar because of the financial lessons I learned, which saved my life,” Lashea explains. “I realized that the only limitations in life are the ones we place on ourselves. At 8 Cents in a Jar, we want to ensure you have the tools to be financially independent and thrive. We’re creating first-generation millionaires.”
Through workshops, programs, and mentorship initiatives, 8 Cents in a Jar equips students with the skills and knowledge needed for economic mobility. Lashea emphasizes the importance of instilling financial discipline and planning from a young age. “If any student is looking to get rich quickly, then we are not the organization for them,” says Lashea. “We emphasize slow and steady progress, saving money, acquiring assets, and making informed investment decisions.”
RECOGNITION AND AWARDS
Lashea has garnered a multitude of accolades throughout her career. Among them are the Orlando Magazine 2018 Women of the Year, the Women on the Rise International, Inc. 2019 Top Educator Award, and the CNBC 2021 Financial Literacy Leader Award. She was also recognized in the Orlando Business Journal’s 2021 40 Under 40 feature and received the 2021 Orlando 21 Most Influential People Award. Notably, she earned the Orlando Magic 2021 Diversity Game Changer Award, and her non-profit organization was featured on the HBO Max Docuseries “Gaming Wall Street.” In October 2023, she was chosen as one of Florida A&M University’s 40 Under 40 award recipients. In 2024, Lashea was honored with the Heart of Florida United Way Unsung Hero title at the Change Maker Impact Awards
and recognized by Women We Admire as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders in Business Orlando for 2024.
EXPANDING IMPACT
Despite her remarkable achievements, Lashea remains committed to her empowerment and giving-back mission. “I’m really in a season of being able to help others because many people have helped me,” she reflects. I definitely still want to give back and pay it forward.”
Looking ahead, Lashea envisions expanding 8 Cents in a Jar’s reach and impact to serve even more communities. “We’re constantly looking for ways to grow and improve our programs,” she says. My goal is to reach as many young people as possible and provide them with the tools they need to succeed financially.”
With April being National Financial Literacy Month, on April 6, 8 Cents in a Jar hosted the Teach Students Money Expo (TSME). “TSME is a priceless opportunity for high school students to learn how to cash in on their financial future,” says Lashea. “Through fun and interactive sessions, they learned to master the cents and sensibility of money management.”
LEGACY OF EMPOWERMENT
As Lashea reflects on her journey, she takes pride in the legacy she is building through 8 Cents in a Jar. “I want to leave behind a world where every child has the opportunity to achieve their dreams, regardless of their background or circumstances,” she declares. “That’s what drives me every single day.”
Moreover, Lashea aims to advocate for policy changes that address systemic barriers to financial literacy and economic empowerment. “It’s not just about individual success; it’s about creating a more equitable society for everyone,” she emphasizes. “We must address the root causes of poverty and inequality to make a true difference.”

BUILDING BRIDGES FOR GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN SOLUTIONS
Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Antoinette Carole Grace Mbarga
by Kerry-Ann McPherson
Sporting a perpetual smile that is larger than life, Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Antoinette Carole Grace Mbarga lives a life of compassion with a visible commitment to serve the world at local and global levels. Raised in Douala, Cameroon, and residing in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for the past decade, she sees herself as an educator, transformational leader, humanitarian, and community activist.
As a child, she was the one who always brought home stray cats and fed the birds on her family’s porch. In high school, a group of bullies nicknamed her “Mother Teresa” because she always stood up for the marginalized. She did not like this at first, but as she grew older, she learned about Mother Teresa’s legacy and began to appreciate the comparison to her work as a humanitarian. As a result, Mother Teresa became her guiding muse. Staying true to her calling, Dr. Mbarga was recognized by the World Humanitarian Organization for Peace and Equity with the 2024 Woman of the Year Award on International Women’s Day.
Dr. Mbarga is the founder of AFIRI Consulting International LLC, a small business with real-world experience from industry-specific experts offering professional guidance, and actionable solutions to businesses or individuals on human rights, education, transformational leadership, and humanitarian causes. The company was awarded a citation from the Governor of Maryland for exceptional services to the African and Hispanic immigrant communities during the pandemic.
BUILDING A LEGACY OF SERVICE
Dr. Mbarga personifies excellence and dedication across various spheres of influence. She serves as the United Nations Global Peace Ambassador, fostering diplomacy and global harmony. With prestigious accolades such as the President Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 and 2023, along with the President’s Volunteer Service Award Gold Medal in 2016, Dr. Mbarga exemplifies selflessness and commitment to the betterment
VBD Magazine 82 HUMANITARIAN FEATURE
of society. Her roles as a Humanitarian Global Goodwill Ambassador, Human Rights Advocate, and Community Activist underscore her unwavering advocacy for justice and equality.
TRANSFORMING LIVES
Dr. Mbarga epitomizes the essence of humanitarianism. With a heart filled with empathy and a spirit fueled by kindness, she continues to spread hope and remind us of the profound impact one individual can have in creating positive change in our society.
In Cameroon, young girls are forced into marriages to older men mainly because of obsolete traditional practices. To address this, Dr. Mbarga partnered with a local priest to pay school fees for young girls running away from forced marriages in the northern region, during the height of Boko Haram terrorist activities in her homeland. Some of their beneficiaries have gone as far as graduating university and then coming back to join their rescue missions as volunteers.
Dr. Mbarga continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing adversity. “Under my leadership, our team partnered with various National HIV/AIDS Awareness Day coordinators and other entities on the validity of a National African Immigrant and Refugees AIDS/HIV and Hepatitis Awareness Day (NAIRAH AD) in September 2013. More than 35 states signed a proclamation to recognize September 9th as National African Immigrant and Refugees AIDS/HIV and Hepatitis Awareness Day. In 2014, the Washington, DC, mayor followed by signing a proclamation for Africa Day in Washington DC.
AS A HUMANITARIAN, I’M EXTREMELY FLEXIBLE WITH MY TIME. YOU CANNOT DO HUMANITARIAN WORK STUCK ON RIGID RULES. HENCE, HAVING PARTNERS AND COLLABORATORS WHO EMBRACE THESE CORE VALUES IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE.
“How is this related to humanitarian work? Well, each year, the US grants 55,000 visas through the diversity lottery. I was a recipient and wanted to give back to the immigrant community by working pro bono to help save this program.
“Since 2013, 605,000 visas have been awarded to program winners. The US is the only country in the world with such a program that allows qualified individuals to enter the US legally and be ready to enter the workforce. This program has been beneficial to many families in Africa, especially Cameroon. I am extremely proud to have been among the individuals who lobbied Congress to keep it running.”
MISS AFRICA USA INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
A common theme that flows through the life of this human rights advocate and educator is the passion to pour kindness into the younger generation. Dr. Mbarga serves as the Executive Director of the Miss Africa USA Internship Program,
which helps Black middle and high school scholars enrolled in various academic institutions in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.
The program’s core values are strongly rooted in academic excellence, community service, transformational leadership, and sisterhood. Interns must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0, exemplify transformational leadership traits, and demonstrate continuous service to the African immigrant community in the United States. “The program commenced in 2017 with three girls, and in two years, it changed the lives of 30 girls,” Dr. Mbarga reveals. “I still mentor our former interns. I firmly believe that once a girl was a Miss Africa USA Intern, she would always remain a Miss Africa USA Intern.”
PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS
It is evident that partnerships and collaboration play a key role in her humanitarian work. “I honestly believe in

embracing diversity and giving all our volunteers a chance to shine through,” states Dr. Mbarga. “As a humanitarian, I’m extremely flexible with my time. You cannot do humanitarian work stuck on rigid rules. Hence, having partners and collaborators who embrace these core values is of utmost importance.”
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
Facing challenges is an inevitable part of all success stories, and it is no different for Dr. Mbarga. To maintain resilience and avoid burnout when working in emotionally taxing or high-pressure situations, Dr. Mbarga discloses her number one secret: “I put God first in everything I do.”
“When you are an immigrant and a Black person nothing comes to you easily. My biggest challenge has been raising my daughter while trying not to give up on my academic goals. Also, it has been a challenge to learn to celebrate all my accomplishments: the phenomenal and totally unexpected ones. I noticed that our society has serious issues with a highly achieving Black woman publicly celebrating herself.”
Dr. Mbarga shares some of her challenges as a humanitarian. “Funding has always
been a challenge because there are so many people in need of help. So many families are unable to feed their children, send them to school, and even provide a decent shelter above their heads.”
Another challenge with funding that Dr. Mbarga faced was the issue of corruption. “Back home it’s sometimes difficult to establish sustainable poverty alleviation campaigns because there are still people willing to use humanitarian funds for their own needs. The other challenge is to find the right people willing to sacrifice time and energy to work in remote areas, making sure that student fees are paid, hospitals bills are taken care of, and even food is provided to the elderly. We do all this pro bono just because we want to really be the quintessential change agents we desperately need in our communities.”
JOY IN KICKBOXING
While this transformational leader is saving the world, Dr. Mbarga finds joy in kickboxing, another avenue that makes her “feel like a superwoman.” She started kickboxing for health reasons to channel her frustrations during the pandemic. Since then, it evolved into being one of her most rewarding experiences because she grew in her self-confidence and became the national brand ambassador for
her studio. Not to mention, she owns 25 pairs of gloves to match her vivacious colorful outfits, making her stand out on the mat.
True to her humanitarian nature, Dr. Mbarga created a group with likeminded women called The SisterSquad, who donate cases of water to the studio and organizes fun events outside of the training sessions. The group partnered with Susan G. Komen to help raise funds to support cancer research.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Dr. Mbarga created The Mbarga Project, a non-governmental organization (NGO) to serve the most vulnerable members of her community such as women, children, and the disabled. She is hoping to earn the 501(c)(3) status for the organization, by the end of this year.
Emphasizing the significance of diverse representation in governance, Dr. Mbarga expressed her aspirations to someday run for Congress. “We need more female immigrants from Africa seated at the leadership tables where decisions impacting our community are made daily.”

The story of Oveda Taylor Richard is one of triumph over adversity, illustrating that no obstacle is insurmountable, and every setback is an opportunity for growth. Oveda is an entrepreneur, advocate, author, and speaker. She is the owner and principal of three successful schools: Sunrise Academy of Excellence, Sunrise Country Preschool, and The Toddlers Club.
Oveda’s mission is to unlock the full potential of each individual and guide them toward their aspirations. Her dedication to education and early childhood development underscores her commitment to uplifting communities and providing opportunities for others to thrive. Her forthcoming memoir, Your Condition Is Not Your Conclusion, slated for release on April 13th, promises to uplift readers with the tale of her journey from trauma survivor to self-made success. But who is Oveda Taylor Richard, and what led her to this remarkable point in her life?
VBD Magazine had an opportunity to speak with Oveda to gain insight into her inspiring journey, the secrets of her thriving business,
and her vision for the future. In the face of adversity, may we all find the strength to rise, to persevere, and to become the architects of our own destinies.
FROM TRAUMA TO TRIUMPH
Oveda’s story begins in the inner-city projects, where she faced challenges that could have easily derailed her dreams. However, she refused to succumb to the circumstances surrounding her. Despite becoming a mother at a young age and lacking guidance, Oveda was determined to forge a better path for herself and her children.
I FOUND MYSELF DIVORCED, SINGLE, AND WITH THREE CHILDREN ON MY OWN. I EDUCATED MYSELF AND PRIORITIZED CREATING A LIFE FOR MY CHILDREN THAT WAS THE OPPOSITE OF MY CHILDHOOD. MY FAITH AND COMMITMENT TO BE BETTER FOR MY CHILDREN PAVED THE WAY FOR ME TO BECOME A SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR AND CREATE A LEGACY FOR THEM.
“My parents wouldn’t allow me to go away for college because I had the babies to take care of,” Oveda recalls. “I was determined to make a better path and life for my small children.”
Though working two jobs while attending college as a teenage mother, Oveda’s resilience and drive propelled her forward. She found solace and opportunity in a preschool setting, where she not only worked but also enrolled her children. This decision was deeply rooted in her desire to protect them from the dangers she had faced in her own upbringing.
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EDUCATION
Armed with determination and a thirst for knowledge, Oveda pursued a degree in Early Childhood Education, laying the foundation for her future endeavors. She didn’t stop there. Oveda obtained her insurance license and delved into the world of entrepreneurship, leveraging her investments to purchase the preschool where she once worked.
“I thrived at the preschool and took up a position in administration after teach-

ing various age groups. Using personal property investments—from my starter home, my primary home, and my parents’ home equity—I was fortunate to be able to purchase the preschool from the owner. She financed me until I was able to obtain financing. Eventually, I obtained an insurance license and used it to create another stream of income to help provide for me and my children.
“I found myself divorced, single, and with three children on my own,” she states. “I educated myself and prioritized creating a life for my children that was the opposite of my childhood. My faith and commitment to be better for my children paved the way for me to become a serial entrepreneur and create a legacy for them.”
MENTORSHIP AND ADVOCACY
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Oveda is zealous about mentorship and advocacy. Drawing from her own life experiences, she offers guidance and support to those seeking to overcome their own obstacles.
“I enjoy mentorship,” Oveda reveals. “I have been able to use my life experiences and lessons to help women and men alike to pursue and achieve goals they felt were unattainable.”
Through her nonprofit organization, Humble Beginnings Foundation Inc., Oveda continues to serve as a catalyst for positive change in her community. Her commitment to empowering others is a testament to her unwavering belief in the transformative power of knowledge, compassion, and support.
“My story is an open book to anyone seeking advice from me. I believe it is through authenticity that we truly inspire others. The Humble Beginnings Foundation is near and dear to my heart. I’m able to fulfill the purpose to which I believe God properly prepared me for.”
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
Oveda’s inspirational memoir, Your Condition Is Not Your Conclusion, will be a source of encouragement, urging others to transcend their limitations and understand that current circumstances are not their final destination.
“I am a first-time author and was inspired to write a book detailing my healing journey after conquering stage 4 head and neck cancer. It was inspired by my journey of faith, healing, and redemption. This book will be a part of a series documenting my life story. Humble Beginnings!”
Reflecting on the challenges she has overcome and the journey that lies ahead,
Oveda recalls, “Financial hardships, disappointment from family and associates, trauma from relationships, and health crises—these challenges have only strengthened my resolve to continue pursuing the path of my purpose.”
As her story unfolds on the pages of her memoir, readers will undoubtedly find solace, encouragement, and the courage to embark on their own journey of faith, healing, and redemption. In Oveda’s own words, “Humble beginnings and the Oveda Taylor Richard brand will be a difference-maker for many.”

BUILDING WEALTH WITH DIVINE PRINCIPLES
by Pastor Danyelle Scroggins
Thousands flood social media, stages, emails, and coaching sessions with promises of wealth-building secrets.
Many leverage their influence to draw you into systems designed not only for your enrichment but significantly for their own. But get this, all are operating upon one of the greatest Christian principles given to get you to a place of abundance.
Many utilize a fundamental Christian principle to amass wealth. This principle is encapsulated in Luke 6:38 (KJV), which states: “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will men give into your bosom. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you again.” The Message Bible simplifies this to ‘Generosity begets generosity.’
Think it not strange or unfathomable that people will share the secrets of how they became wealthy. Some of them have tapped into Christian principles that works for man whether they are believers or not. There was a time when piecing together two nickels felt like an insurmountable task. Every time I almost had them, life’s demands would snatch a piece away. It wasn’t until I embraced the power of principles that my financial journey found solid ground.
Don’t get me wrong, I did not start getting these nuggets when I began seeking. Some of them were handed down to me from generations of women who loved God, and not owing anyone. My grandmother would say, “Owe nothing
to no man because then you’ll have to suck up to someone worthy of only love.” I didn’t know until I became a mature woman that her saying was richly imbedded into Biblical scripture. Read Romans 13:8. It is a part of the principle to wealth.
Consider the essence of a principle: a foundational truth that guides beliefs, behaviors, and reasoning. Every directive in the Bible is rooted in such truths, designed to usher the believer into a life aligned with God’s Word. When you get
into the flow of God’s Word, everything that He has said begins to act and orchestrate on your behalf.
Imagine waking up every day, not just to work hard, but to live by principles instilled by those who believed in the power of diligence. Proverbs 21:5 teaches us that diligent planning leads to abundance, while haste leads to scarcity. In my words…“Hard work leads to plenty or abundance, while laziness leads to desires unfulfilled or begging.”
VBD Magazine 90 INSPIRATION OASIS
Deuteronomy 15:10 (KJV) says, “Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.”
The journey to abundance or wealth isn’t just about giving generously; it’s about embodying the spirit of generosity. When I embraced this, the principle of reciprocity transformed my life, proving that what we give, in the spirit we give it, truly defines what we receive.
You were not created to experience lack, as scarcity is not part of God’s promise for you. Understanding the blessing of being part of Abraham’s lineage opens you to a multifaceted wealth. It all starts with a mustard seed of faith—a small belief in the divine truths shared with us can yield an overflow of all that we need.
Grasping this concept requires more than what can be conveyed in a brief article. Yet, I assure you, embracing God’s Word on wealth will guide you into a realm of prosperity impervious to the world’s attempts at disruption. You will discover blessings in every journey, whether entering or departing, in urban life or the tranquility of your own “harvest fields”—the places and spaces where your heart resides.
Psalm 84:11 (NIV) assures us, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” This scripture invites us to trust in God’s provision fully. In this sea-
son of my life, I’ve come to understand that being rich is not the ultimate goal for believers. Instead, we should aim for wealth and generational prosperity, recognizing that while money is significant, it naturally gravitates towards us as we live by godly principles and endeavor to be the hands of God on Earth.
By aligning our lives with these principles and embodying generosity, we step into a flow of abundance that extends beyond financial gain. We cultivate a legacy of wealth that impacts generations, guided by the assurance that our faith, as small as a mustard seed, is potent enough to unlock a life rich in blessings and divine favor.
