Equipo Abrines
And so we finally have number six, a sign of love, of the love that at Abrines we treat the world of haute horlogerie and fine jewellery, a sign of responsibility, of the responsibility we feel for you, of honesty and loyalty, attributes associated with our work which guide us like lanterns. It’s here, once upon our journey, where we come across the most surprising developments of 2018, such as Bulgari and its new Curiosity Shop, Vacheron Constantin and its move to black for the new Overseas collection, and Omega and its reissue of the world’s most resistant watch to magnetic fields, the Railmaster. Seville is hot, as is its consecration as a land of filming, just ask the producers of Game of Thrones. Speaking of the seventh art, of art in general, we have the illustrator Ana Zapico with her distinct vision, the maestro José Gómez Ortega “El Gallito” and his pioneering bullring, and the eternal portraits of Murillo, more present than ever during the 400th anniversary of his birth. Don’t worry, this is only the beginning. If you want more, just flip the pages. Abrines Staff

THE FIRST AQUARIUM IN THE WORLD TO MEASURE THE IMPACT OF ITS ACTIVITY ON GLOBAL WARMING. Hippocampus reidi.
E
Setting an example In late 2017, Eugenio Calabuig, chairman of the group Global Omnium, presented the business action plan for the Seville Aquarium, whose main objective was to calculate the institution’s carbon footprint. Today it has become the first aquarium in the world to do so. Carbon footprint, what is it? A carbon footprint is the primary environmental indicator of an activity and makes it possible to quantify greenhouse gas emissions that are released into the atmosphere as a result of a given activity. In this case, the Seville Aquarium has verified the activities related to its day-to-day operations: direct emissions relating to mobile and stationary combustion; and indirect emissions relating to electricity use or the use of consumables such as paper, animal food, business trips, etc. State-of-the-art technology for the environment The aquarium’s hydraulic and energy efficiency have been improved to achieve the certification in question. To do so, the institution’s cutting-edge technology in water management provided by the group Global Omnium was implemented in technical areas in order to ensure hydraulic and energetic control and hence animal welfare and a decrease in consumption. Zero tolerance of climate change In addition to the carbon footprint certification, the Seville Aquarium also seeks to reduce waste generation as much as possible through the “Zero Waste” model. Moreover, by conducting research, it aims to increase the resilience of ecosystems, particularly of those around the estuary of the Guadalquivir River. Lastly, the Seville Aquarium also carries out projects to recover endangered species and to prevent the contamination of ecosystems with elements that jeopardise the health of marine species. www.acuariosevilla.es Muelle de las Delicias, s/n, 41012 Sevilla Tel: 955 44 15 41

Y
THE ANCIENT HISPALIS HAS BECOME THE CRADLE OF THE ACCLAIMED SERIES GAME OF THRONES CREATED BY DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS FOR THE AMERICAN TELEVISION CHANNEL HBO.
The new filming session, as happened with the first, means that it will be necessary to install scaffolding and build a wooden structure on which the set will be placed.
Los del Río already said that Seville has a special colour. However, a city cannot live on colours alone, which is why the capital of Andalusia is building a silver bridge to beautiful and historically-rich places able to attract the attention of the biggest of the big in American television. Italica is Dragonpit The Roman amphitheatre of the Roman ruins of Italica, located in Santiponce, is the undisputed jewel of this site that aspires to be declared a World Heritage Site. These days, nevertheless, it belongs to the world of dragons, more specifically to those of Queen Daenerys, as this site was chosen as the setting for the Dragonpit, the location of one of the scenes in the last episode of the seventh season. Now in the middle of shooting the eighth season, this recreation of the fictional city of King’s Landing returns to action, which means that the architectural site of Italica has been subject to partial closures due to film shooting.

Zenith Defy Zero G.
It is possible that Breguet had made a prototype six years earlier, which is why 1795 is often noted as the year in which the tourbillon was invented.
O
THE TOURBILLON AROSE IN RESPONSE TO THE NEED TO COUNTERACT THE EFFECTS OF GRAVITY ON POCKET WATCHES. ZENITH DEVISED A REVOLUTIONARY SELF-REGULATING GRAVITY CONTROL DEVICE.
Origin The tourbillon officially emerged on day 7 of the Messidor month of year 9, according to the French republican calendar, or, what is the same, on 26 June 1801, as shown in the patent given to master watchmaker Breguet by the Interior Ministry of France. Important advances in watchmaking were made in the late 18th century; nonetheless, the Earth’s gravity continued to be an unresolved problem for master watchmakers. The force of gravity caused the oscillation frequency of the balance wheel to vary, since the centre of gravity of the entire system was not always the same as the rotational axis. Breguet devised a mechanism where he placed the regulating organ and the escapement inside a metal cage that turned on itself at a rate of one complete revolution per minute. This mechanism thus did away with the deviations in the running rate resulting from the watch’s vertical position. Gravity neutralised In the early 21st century, as part of the pursuit of ultimate precision, Zenith designed a revolutionary self-regulating gravity control device. This patented gyroscopic “Gravity Control” module manages to offset the effects of gravity on the running rate of the watch by maintaining the regulating organ and the balance wheel in a horizontal position. Futuristically reinterpreted in the new Defy Zero G (with a 44 mm diameter), this spherical system composed of 139 tiny components has been entirely redesigned and optimised to increase its efficiency and reduce its size.

Did you know that…?
• Gravity is a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass or energy are drawn (or gravitate) toward one another. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects, while the Moon’s gravity causes the ocean tides. • A body weighs more at the poles and less at the equator, but the difference is so small that it is imperceptible to human beings.
• Earth’s gravity is 9.780327 m/s2 at the equator and 9.832 m/s2 at the poles.
• The film Gravity starting Sandra Bullock and George Clooney won seven Academy Awards.

U

49 Tradition and innovation go hand in hand in a culinary journey that exudes Andalusia while featuring Basque nuances. Located in an old mansion from 1929 next to the walls of the Alcázar and surrounded by the Murillo Gardens, it is the first restaurant in Seville to be part of Michelin Days. We chat with its maître d’, Juan Ordóñez, Chef Ismael Castro, and Pilar Gómez from the Events and Reservations Department. They say that Oriza is one of the few restaurants to flawlessly combine eating pleasure and tranquillity. Where does your Basque-Andalusian offer come from? Our ancestors were Basque and Andalusian. That is why bringing together two delicious cuisines makes our best version. You focus on fresh healthy ingredients, like you did for World Tapas Day. Yes, it’s essential to our cooking. That’s why for World Tapas Day we prepared a salad with dried and salted Barbate tuna, goat’s cheese, black olives, walnuts and orange vinaigrette. It was high in nutrients thanks to the goat’s cheese, and the omega 3 provided by the walnuts is essential for the summer season. It is currently on our bar menu. A good wine to go with this dish? Our mâitre d’, Juan Ordoñez, suggested the white wine Botani Blanco D.O. Sierras de Málaga. You were also finalists in the Sevilla Tapas Week 2018 competition. Yes, we are very happy to have been finalists in Sevilla Tapas Week 2018, a leading competition in our city. From what we understand, your commitment goes beyond food. For the Year of Murillo, traditional Golden Age dishes are being brought back this year. Tell us how. We like to stay on top of the events happening in our city, and the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Murillo seemed like an excellent opportunity to join in on such an important initiative. As a result, we worked with the director of the documentary Murillo, el último viaje to study some of his works to inspire us to create an offer based on traditional Golden Age dishes. Two paintings that inspired us were
Chef Ismael Castro.
Angels’s Kitchen (Louvre Museum) and Saint Diego of Alcala Feeding the Poor (Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid). Our head chef, Ismael Castro, and his team knew how to draw out a traditional tapa from these two paintings, a tapa made from the best national meat and cooked in a very special way. It will be one of the signature dishes on the menu at Bar España. “Shredded beef shank stew” You’ve also organised a charity parade for Azotea Azul. Your social commitment is admirable. This idea came from the Sevillian company Apalusakids. They told us about the Azotea Azul project and how we could help. We thought it was an excellent idea. We organised a charity parade with various children’s brands from Seville, and it was a great success thanks to everyone who was involved and to the people who joined in on such a special day. They are small gestures that all together add up to a lot. You were also acclaimed as the Best Traditional Food Restaurant in the Gurmé Sevilla Awards. How do you feel? It is an honour for us that the public voted us as the Best Traditional Food Restaurant in Seville. EL SUPERHÉROE DE LOS OCÉANOS
CON MOTIVO DEL DÍA MUNDIAL DE LOS OCÉANOS, BLANCPAIN PRESENTÓ SU TERCERA SERIE DE RELOJES DE EDICIÓN LIMITADA, UNA SERIE QUE CONTRIBUYE A LA CAUSA DE LA COMPAÑÍA POR LA PROTECCIÓN DE LOS OCÉANOS.
B
51 ON THE OCCASION OF WORLD OCEANS DAY, BLANCPAIN PRESENTED ITS THIRD SERIES OF LIMITED EDITION WATCHES, A SERIES THAT CONTRIBUTES TO THE COMPANY’S CAUSE OF PROTECTING THE OCEANS.
Blancpain, three of three Since the launch of the Fifty Fathoms, the first modern diving watch, in 1953, Blancpain has not stopped investing in the exploration, study and conservation of the oceans. Four years ago, it presented its model of BOC watches in a limited edition. Following the success of this line and in keeping with the message of preserving the marine ecosystem, the company took up the initiative again in 2016 and now, in 2018, has presented its third model.

Fifty Fathoms Ocean Commitment III The third series is in line with the characteristics of the original 1953 model. True to its predecessor, it houses a reliable and robust automatic movement, calibre 1151, with a power reserve of four days. It no longer needs a soft iron cage around the movement, because the balance wheel has a silicon hairspring that protects the movement with its immunity to magnetism. The sapphire crystal case back exposes the Côtes de Genève decoration on the movement and the gold oscillating weight engraved with the inscription “Ocean Commitment” featuring an NAC (an alloy notably composed of platinum) finish. Water resistant to 300 metres, it is equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel, an essential detail on a diving watch, whose blue colour evokes the oceans. Readability under water is optimal, as the timepiece has large indices that are luminescent, as are the markings on the dial and the hands. The case is satin-brushed steel and measures 40 mm in diameter, a diameter exclusive to limited edition Fifty Fathoms watches. Lastly, it is attached to a sailcloth strap and includes an additional NATO strap.

THE EMERGENCE OF SMARTWATCHES FORCES SWISS MANUFACTURERS TO LOOK FOR NEW PROFILES
The blue ocean strategy, created in 1990 by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, professors at INSEAD Business School, seeks to put aside competition between companies, expanding the market through innovation. Thus, there are red oceans, places where all companies compete, where the market is saturated by the proliferation of competition, and the blue oceans, places where companies go in search of new market niches. This context can very well be applied to strategies being carried out by Swiss watch companies. Inside the blue ocean A Swiss watch has historically been viewed as an exclusive, high-value product with a sophisticated design sold to an extremely high-end clientele. New industrial strategies currently respect this fact, mainly because the monopoly of exclusivity works exceptionally well. However, if we look a bit further and focus on the future, the current stability could begin to waver due to the emergence of smartwatches. The “digital generation”, as is obvious, has a digital vision of life and hence is attracted to these kinds of watches: analogue
mechanics gives way to the technology of applications. Being connected is the priority. The dilemma that Switzerland must address is whether these customers will change, in the future, to another type of more classic and more exclusive watch. Along these lines, major watch brands have been gaining ground among young customers with high spending power in order to create a sort of affective bond that will potentially lead to the buying of more expensive models in the medium term. This relationship is based on image, an image that is closely tied to top figures in an array of sports, particularly football, internationally-renowned models and actresses, successful businesspeople and, increasingly more often, internet influencers. This use of the star system better known by younger customers outfitted in the most exclusive watches by these companies is an investment in the commercial blue ocean. Exclusivity versus homogeneity The foundations of the market of the future are being built today. That is why Swiss manufacturers are currently trying to promote

an image among future buyers and arouse in them a desire to have a high-quality product. The key: the homogenisation of watches with digital technology. There are no big differences among digital watches, which is quite the opposite of Swiss designer watches, which are exclusive and whose production is limited.

Año Murillo L A M I R A D A I N N O VA D O R A EN EL 400 ANIVERSARIO DEL NACIMIENTO DE MURILLO, LA CIUDAD DE SEVILLA SE REINVENTA RINDIENDO HOMENAJE AL ARTISTA Y POSTULÁNDOSE COMO UNO DE LOS EPICENTROS CULTURALES DEL PLANETA.
S
ON THE 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF MURILLO, THE CITY OF SEVILLE REINVENTS ITSELF BY HONOURING THE ARTIST AND SHOWING ITSELF AS ONE OF THE LEADING CULTURAL EPICENTRES ON THE PLANET.
His space and his time Bartolomé Esteban Murillo came into this world in 17th century Seville, destined to become one of the great masters of the history of painting. With his explorative nature, throughout his career the artist developed an innovative vision that anticipated modern painting. The youngest of 14 siblings, he lost his father when he was only nine and his mother several months later, spurring him to take refuge in painting very early on. In his world of colour and fantasy, he demonstrated his expertise with brushes and created renovating, luminous work with his imposing and unusual use of colour. All that he imagined came from his own life, Seville, a region full of nuances, halfway between decadence and the fact of being the gateway from America to Europe. From Seville to the rest of the world Murillo’s work blossomed from the roots of the culture of Seville, literally, given that he created his pigments with water from the Guadalquivir. At the same time, he sought out inspiration from other places, from Zurbarán and Ribera to Venetian painting. This is the only way

to explain his art and the success of his painting at the time: a tireless struggle to find purity of image. The artist in his city Murillo was one of the great portrait painters of his day, producing revolutionary works like his Self-portrait, in which he manages to surpass the limits of the frame and enter the terrain of the third dimension. He was also skilled at accurately reflecting social issues, portrayed in a collection of costumbrist painting, and completed a large collection of religious works, with a predilection for the Immaculate Conception, which he depicted with light and tenderness. The fourth century: past, present and future Seville pays tribute to the painter on his 400th birthday with an ambitious commemoration programme that aims to explore the past of the city and the era of Murillo and to link his innovation to the present, to a capital that embraces its roots to move forward with them toward the future.

A
El diseño de la plaza corre a cargo de los arquitectos José Espiau y Francisco Urcola, cuya designación no fue al azar. and economic stability brought about by the Restoration, the modernisation of communications, the boom in celebrations and the emigration to the cities (especially in Seville, due to the Ibero-American Exhibition) were bonuses that led the fans and El Gallito to promote the construction of new more comfortable bullrings that allowed for bullfights accommodating more spectators and at more affordable prices. He also aspired for bullrings to have modern livestock raising facilities in order to better manage the animals and improve the fight.

The project For this undertaking, he worked in collaboration with José Julio Lissen, an exporter of olive from Seville and dear friend, who would also be the developer. The bullring was designed by the architects José Espiau and Francisco Urcola, who created a very specific design. Espiau was, alongside Talavera and Aníbal Gonzales, the most important architect of Regionalism and responsible for many of the most important buildings in the city. Urcola, a well-known architect from San Sebastian, had designed, among others, the old El Chofre bullring and the Plaza Monumental in Pamplona, which was a pioneer in the use of reinforced concrete as a construction element in Spain. To give bullfighting a new image of modernity, El Gallito sought to work with the best architects and the most innovative techniques at the time. Start and finish Work began in 1916 and ended in early 1918, and the result was a huge bullring for 23,000 spectators and large facilities for managing livestock. The inaugural bullfight was held on 6 June 1918 with El Gallito, Fortuna and Posada fighting bulls of Contreras. Sometime later, on 16 May 1920, El Gallito died in Talavera, bringing La Monumental to an end. Without its alma mater, it no longer made sense. The developer, Lissen, had financial troubles and eventually abandoned the project, leaving the bullring to be declared as wreckage, demolished and absorbed by the city’s urban expansion. Among the little remains of this bullring today is a tile that fans of El Gallito placed in his memory.

2018 SEES THE EMERGENCE OF A NEW VERSION OF THE OVERSEAS WITH A BLACK DIAL BEAUTIFULLY FRAMED BY THE STUNNING SHINE OF THE STEEL CASE.
Retrospective Vacheron Constantin created the Overseas model 20 years ago, geared toward travel and escapism, a symbol of an adventure watch. In 2016, the manufacturer from Geneva opened new horizons to its iconic model through a collection with a revisited design that perpetuates its original spirit. Combining power and distinction with a sporty temperament and distinctive refinement, this generation of the Overseas managed to perfectly combine performance and style. The new black The traits making up the character of the Overseas collection and its watchmaking qualities are repeated in this new interpretation: a characteristic six-sided bezel, an automatic in-house movement and interchangeable bracelets and straps. Adaptable to all situations and any style, the Overseas black dial model comes in two versions: the simple self-winding threehand model (41 mm) and a chronograph model (42.5 mm). For the latter, Vacheron Constantin focused on readability and opted for silver for the three additional counters. This “panda” aesthetics is inspired by 1960s watches dedicated to motorsport. The light/ dark contrast ensures better visibility and
accentuates the indications provided by the chronograph function. The chronograph version is powered by self-winding Calibre 5200, which features a 22-carat gold oscillating weight adorned with an engraved wind rose which can be admired through the see-through sapphire crystal case back. This twin-barrel movement is equipped with a column wheel driving the chronograph start, stop and reset functions and also features a vertical clutch, which is a technical device that prevents any potential jerking of the hand when the chronograph is activated. The concept of interchangeable bracelets and straps launched and designed a few years ago to ensure that the Overseas collection was in keeping with the times is included on the new black dial models. The watch opts for modularity and a personalised touch by offering the option of being worn on a metal bracelet comprised of links forming half Maltese crosses (a casual look) or a strap in either leather (as a chic variation) or rubber (for a sporty touch), all without the need for tools to make the changes.

Withstand it all The first OMEGA Railmaster was designed for railway staff and for anyone who worked near electric fields. Able to withstand magnetic fields up to 1,000 guass, it ensured completely reliable accuracy. Now, thanks to its Master Chronometer movement, the latest Railmaster is 15 times more resistant and able to withstand magnetic fields up to 15,000 guass. The design In brushed stainless steel and with a conical crown, the Railmaster sports a 40 mm case holding a vertically-brushed grey or black dial featuring recessed hour markers filled with vintage Super-Luminova, a railway-style minute scale, a crosshair, the Omega accuracy symbol and a «lollipop» central seconds hand commemorating railway signals. The engine room Every beat counts, and inside the Railmaster beats the anti-magnetic Master Chronometer Calibre 8806 movement protected by a case back featuring a wave-edged design and a high-relief engraved hippocampus medallion. In the case of Ana, flour gave way to the brush, a brush born in Oviedo and that, after several years in Madrid, decided nearly 20 years ago to freely express its art all along the streets of Seville. Inseparable from Ana, it has accompanied her throughout her career, a student of fashion design. She has come across a myriad of personalities during her learning journey, including Amadeo Roca Gisbert, who gave her painting classes and influenced her work. James Dean

Curiosity shop E L S AV O I R - FA I R E D E R O M A

THE BRAND’S NEW CORPORATE SPACE TAKES OVER FROM ITS PREDECESSOR, OPENED IN 1905.
‘
When I’m in Rome], I always visit Bvlgari, because it is the most important museum of contemporary art.” This unequivocal statement was said by one of the founders of Pop Art, Andy Warhol, and highlights the character of the Italian brand’s designs: exclusive pieces enveloped in halos of intellectuality which, like conductors, carry specific messages about those wearing them. Opened on 7 December 2017 in the heart of Rome at Via Condotti 10, the New Curiosity Shop stands as the contemporary alter ego of the original shop, thus honouring its former exuberance in a bold new style. It is no wonder, then, that the flagship store of the Italian company has become a rite of initiation for some and a form of pilgrimage for others, given that the boutique proudly expresses itself as a museum, art, creativity and history. A multi-sensory journey The idea behind the old Curiosity Shop and which continues to inspire the new Curiosity Shop is that of stimulating the senses through art. A unique space that emotionally
shakes up the insides of human beings and encourages them to boast the fruits of their own creation. And here are three reasons why visiting the New Curiosity Shop is a must. • Dual identity: The inside of the New Curiosity Shop has an ambivalent nature. One side is elegant and modern, while the other one evokes old-world charm. The modern atmosphere seeks to reflect the shop’s original design and pay tribute to its success. Indeed, in its heyday, wealthy English tourists would make sure to visit the old Curiosity Shop, allured by the exotic pieces on offer at the time. • Intuitive counter: The central counter looks like a traditional table both in shape and materials, but its surface is actually an interactive screen that allows shoppers to browse the store’s entire collection. Of course, you can simply explore the collection physically. What’s not on display is hidden in drawers, enticing intrepid shoppers to embark on a journey of discovery. It’s not called the Curiosity Shop for nothing.
• Exclusive boutique: Another special feature of the New Curiosity Shop is the exclusive nature of the products it sells with respect to the brand’s more standard shops. The pieces here are exclusive; they cannot be found anywhere else. If you allow us to make a suggestion, take a look at the CONDOTTI10 collection. It consists of two sets of bracelets with matching rings: one in pink gold and diamonds and the other in pink gold and diamond pave with mother-ofpearl inserts. Their geometric designs mimic a floor motif in the Pantheon, making them special souvenirs from your trip. For watch connoisseurs, there is the 20-piece limited edition Serpenti Twist Your Time collection. It comes with interchangeable straps in metallic blue or pink calfskin. On the back of the pink gold and diamond pave case is an engraving that reads “Only in Rome”. Lastly, for experts in handbags, a new version of the Serpenti features the hashtag #ROMA. Available in white leather, the 200-piece limited edition is an undeniable declaration of love for the Eternal City.

THE ISLAND OF SAMOA, VIRGIN AND NOT PLAGUED BY OVERCROWDING, IS A GARDEN EMBRACED BY THE PACIFIC OCEAN, A SMALL PARADISE WHERE CALM AND THE STILLNESS OF TIME REIGN.
Extraordinarily beautiful and markedly exotic, the island of Samoa arouses a craving for adventure. It is nestled in the antipodes and forms part of Oceania, an exceedingly appealing continent that reels in the most intrepid adventurers. This small country in the South Pacific is part of Polynesia and comprised of two main islands: Savai’, the largest, and Upolu, where the capital, Apia, is located. European arrival The earliest contact with Europeans took place in the early 18th century; however, it was not until 1830 that relations became more solid with the arrival of British missionaries and merchants. The religious and architectural mark that they left on the island can be seen today and is widely appealing to tourists. Three-way dispute In the midst of the 19th century, the United States, Great Britain and Germany were caught up in a dispute to see who could lay claim to the islands. The threesome finally agreed that Germany would administrate Savai’ and Upolu. Samoa was the first country in the Pacific to regain its independence in 1962, although it retains widespread influences from the old continent due to the long period of colonisation (hence the high number of churches throughout the island). It is a wonderful surprise to take a minute to explore these temples of great simplicity – the inside is quite unlike what you’ll find in the West, as the different spaces embrace a striking burst of colour. Savai’, a trip through time Metaphorically and literally speaking The socalled International Date Line, an imaginary line drawn through the middle of the Pacific
Ocean, makes it possible to fly from an airport in New Zealand, Tongo or Fiji and arrive in Samoa the day before. This is an odd curiosity if one takes a look at a calendar and sees that it is the day before. A boat trip allows you to travel from Apia to the island of Savai’i, a journey that leads to the most remote origins, the fa’a Samoa or The Samoan Way. Sava’i is the largest island between Hawai and New Zealand. The mountains are volcanoes full of dense tropical forest that reach up to nearly 2,000 metres above sea level. Here visitors will find rarely travelled trails that lead to the most fascinating places in the Pacific, such as the Pulemelei mound, the largest megalithic monument in Polynesia. Amazing coral reefs are the perfect spot for activities like scuba diving, and the blow holes provide a natural spectacle to the eyes of onlookers: water runs through the internal channels of porous rocks and is later shot through the air like a roaring jet. The numerous waterfalls, natural pools and beautiful sunsets top off the highest of expectations. To Sua Ocean Trench The To Sua Ocean Trench on Upolu is a special and marvellously natural spot located in the village of Latofaga. A 30-metre deep hole appears in the middle of lush gardens. There is a stepladder leading down to the swimming hole where one can take a luxurious dip. The sea is in front, a lovely beach, to the right, and to the left, there are small cliffs and natural pools with amazing coral reefs. Moreover, visitors can head to the Papase’ea sliding rocks, as well as walk through a moss-covered bush to the shore of the secluded lake Lanoto’o to swim

in its dark green water. Nu’usafe’e Island is a great place to swim among different kinds of coral and gaze at harmless sand sharks. One can also lose themselves at rarely-visited beaches like Saleapaga, Mulivai and the beach of the Return to Paradise, where Gary Cooper shot the film. Treasure Island Apia, the capital of Samoa, is an absolute must-visit for literature fans. The city, with its store houses, Saturday market and white churches, continues to resemble the old trading posts of the South Seas. The lush Mount Vaea overlooking the city is the resting place of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, author of the famous book Treasure Island. Stevenson decided to retire here in search of a climate that would benefit his delicate lungs. Tusitala –story teller–, the nickname given to him by the Samoans, is written on his gravestone.
