Abrines Magazine nº3

Equipo Abrines

Our passions, more clearly than ever, are expressed in the third edition of this magazine. They are all those things that motivate us and generate in us what doctors call good stress . It is why we get up in the mornings, what we like and the thing in which we want to improve; it is where we should and want to arrive. You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?' (George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) (Irish writer). Watches once again hold specific importance, because manufacturers keep on creating and excelling every day, presenting new pieces, i.e., objects of desire for the biggest fans. We also discussed the proliferation of new seals and the latest collection by Vacheron Constantin and its new calibres. Moreover, we chatted with Carlos Alonso, creator of SIAR Europe, a watchmaker event held in Madrid that is already on track to become a leading event. Of course, we still love jewellery. You will discover an extensive variety from our own collection and an interesting article on how to photograph these types of objects so close up " it is a fully-fledged science and a topic we adore! And needless to say, the magazine is rounded off with other kinds of content. For instance, we invite you to discover the adventure undertaken by some courageous individuals who want to colonise Mars. We also show you what the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, is like and we talk about one of Seville's most illustrious figures, no less than Gustavo Adolfo BÈcquer. Enjoy your read. Abrines Staff

La Folie is a haven of peace in the Arenal neighbourhood between the city centre and the Guadalquivir. Decorated with exquisite taste, it seems more like a cosy tea room than a shop. You will find a carefully chosen selection of the latest collections from some of the most prestigious international designers, including Sita Murt, TCN, Antik Batik and Suzie Wong.

Sevilla. Tel.: +34 955 13 10 58 To talk about Roberto Diz is to talk about a great name in its own right in the world of Spanish fashion. This Galician designer, based in Seville since 2009, has become one of the most respected creators on the national scene thanks to his –usually very bold– designs. There are other reasons, of course: first, Diz always glorifies women with stunning and revealing dresses; and second, his patterns and needlework are nearly flawless.

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough."

This was said by Robert Capa, one of the best photographers of the 20th century and co-founder of the prestigious Magnum agency. This Hungarian photojournalist, who incidentally always worked alongside his significant other, the photographer Gerda Taro, covered several wars. There’s no doubt that what was important to him was to get close up and show reality as accurately as possible. We are devoted to another, obviously much more relaxed, field. However, we share something essential with Capa: the desire to get close to the object and show it like it really is. We are passionate about watches and jewellery and must therefore show them in all their glory. The calibre of a timepiece or

the diamond set on a ring is in reality a very small specimen which, nonetheless, needs complete attention. It is not easy to portray it and we must master the right photographic technique. Macro photography or pushing beyond the limits Macro photography is the solution to a problem. In other words, it is a response to the need to overcome the limitations you run into when you grab the camera and get very close to a particular subject. What happens is that there comes a point when the focus ring is at its max and you’re still 40 or 50 cm away from what you want to photograph. One of the options is to use a close-up lens, which makes it possible to create a distortion of light waves and get even closer up, with the subject subsequently filling out the frame. They are like a polarising filter and also work like the glasses used to combat far-sightedness which make it so that if you bring the paper closer to your eyes you can read more easily. They are truly useful; they are lightweight and can be used easily: just screw them on and the camera is ready to shoot. However, they also have disadvantages. They provide the highest quality in the centre of the image, so as you move away toward the edges of the lens, the image becomes less sharp, thus somewhat reducing subsequent composition options. Nevertheless, there are alternatives: the extension tube. It is a tube without any type of lens inside which is screwed onto the camera in order to separate the lens from the sensor. An extension tube is screwed on, so it is possible to screw on as many as desired to make the subject fill the entire frame. Of course, there is a downside. The more extension created, the less light reaching the sensor, thus making it more difficult to focus. It is not easy, as you can see. However, for the most seasoned photographers, we also recommend focus stacking. This technique allows you to harness the advantages of macro photography to later, with good post-production work, create the perfect image. It consists of photographing the subject in parts and subsequently joining the parts together using a Photoshop application. All you have to do is try!

Essential accessories Good lighting is needed for good results. You must also have a good spotlight, which will allow you to continuously illuminate the subject in question. Of course, you also need reflective screens to help you direct the light. In addition, it is also necessary to have a tripod and support (a track) to hold the camera and move it from side to side or forward and backward with precision.

CIENCIA TECNO & VIAJES

The Mars One project, which aims to promote the first manned mission to Mars, has launched an interesting debate about the possibilities and consequences of conquering the red planet.

que Marte es el objetivo, teniendo en cuenta además que China es a día de hoy la mejor posicionada para conquistar de nuevo la Luna. La cuestión es: ¿resulta viable lo que planean los dirigentes de Mars One? Al parecer, sí. Marte se encuentra a 225 millones de Km, una distancia que se traduce en un desembolso de 100 mil millones de dólares. Es una inversión gigante, pero los países ya no están solos en esto, la cosa ha cambiado mucho desde que Neil Armstrong y Buzz Aldrin alunizaran en 1969, en plena Guerra Fría. La carrera espacial había sido siempre una cuestión política. En los Estados Unidos, por ejemplo, George W. Bush inició en 2004 un plan que se llamó Constellation y que tenía como objetivo llegar a la Luna; en cambio, la administración de Obama viró el rumbo y apostó por intentar aterrizar en un asteroide. Ahora, son los emprendedores y las compañías privadas las que tienen la sartén por el mango. Dos ejemplos: SpaceX, fundada por el multimillonario creador de PayPal, Elson Musk;

The countdown has begun for 100 candidates, including two Spaniards, who are very close to fulfilling the dream of their lives: being part of the first manned mission to Mars. From 2018 to 2024, those in charge of Mars One will send 24 people to be part of the first human settlements on the red planet. They will all undergo an extensive training programme and receive notions in medicine, construction, agriculture and other technical skills needed to have the greatest possible autonomy. A viable alternative There is sometimes only a fine line between philanthropy and insanity. In this case, however, although the fear of having certain health problems (loss of bone density is a great concern) is present, desire can overcome everything. In fact, the International Space Station (ISS) has no doubt that Mars is the objective, considering that China is who today is best placed to conquer the moon again. The question is: Is what the leaders of Mars One are planning viable? Apparently so. Mars is located 225 million km away, a distance that translates into a financial outlay of $100 billion. It is a huge investment, but countries are not alone in this anymore. Things have changed greatly since the days when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon in 1969 in the midst of the Cold War. The space race has always been a political issue. In the US, for example, George W. Bush launched a plan in 2004 called Constellation which aimed to reach the moon; meanwhile, the

Mars One will have to do without one of its primary investors. Endemol, the well-known television producer and creator of Big Brother, has turned its back on the project. The Dutch company was going to broadcast the process to select the future astronauts, but now considers it “impossible” to reach an agreement about the production of the programme. The information was released by the newspaper Daily Mail, where Bas Lansdorp, one of the project leaders, stated that funds will come from other private investors and that instead of a reality show a documentary will be shot.

Obama administration changed course and decided to try to land on an asteroid. Now entrepreneurs and private companies have taken the bull by the horns. Two examples: SpaceX, founded by the multimillionaire creator of PayPal, Elson Musk, and Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos of Amazon. Both see Mars as a very interesting alternative in light of the evident destruction of living conditions on Earth. “Who wouldn’t sign up for that?” asked expert Brent Sherwood recently in an interview in The Guardian. “Imagine a hotel with a view that’s changing all the time… where there are 18 sunrises and sunsets every day”. Sherwood, who has spent the last 25 years researching how to build orbital cities and planetary settlements, is convinced that it is just a matter of time before we all travel to space on holiday. There is only one drawback: “Nobody knows how to cook in space. Until you can mix a martini or make an omelette, you can’t have a space hotel. No one is going to pay $1m a night and put up with microwave meals.” Jokes aside, the truth is that the possibilities of setting foot on Mars are real. There are two major challenges: the cost and the technology. When considering traditional construction, it is essential to bear in mind that the size of a rocket’s payload bay limits what can be carried into space, in the same way that the dimensions of buildings on Earth are measured by what can fit on the back of a lorry. The difference, nonetheless, is clear: while a terrestrial building site can receive as many deliveries as necessary, sending a single brick to the moon (located just 384,400 km from Earth, which is much closer than Mars) would cost €300,000. As a result, the challenge has always been to develop lightweight materials and equipment, what could be called a sort of astro-Ikea operation. In theory, this strategy would work on the moon, whose similar system in the mid-1970s, is sure of it. His Counterpoint surface is “an open mine", according to Madhu Thangavelu, lunar colony, of which there is currently a model in the space architect at the University of Southern California. “It is Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, envisaged a network of full of readily accessible minerals and compounds that could inflated domes and structures moulded from lunar basalt to be used to produce metals, bricks, glass and paints.” Which house a community of 200 people sustained by an ecosystem leads one to think that, more than futurisof vegetable and animal species. tic characteristics, lunar architecture could “It was a wild dream at the time,” Mientras que una obra bring the Gothic Revival along with it. acknowledged Trotti years later.

Its limbs are fine and have strong bones, making the contours of the joints clearly visible. It has a noble, flexible trot with a gait that is full of impulsion and extension. It can be trained starting at three years old, although from a growth standpoint, it does not reach maturity until five or six. These characteristics make it perfect for training.

Carlos Alonso, creator of SIAR in Mexico City, receives us to talk about the second edition of SIAR Europe, which took place in Madrid. He is the man behind the event and therefore does not shirk any sort of responsibility when assessing how it went.

The first thing to say is that it exceeded our expectations in terms of number of visitors: over 4,500, twice as many as the last edition. Second, we must highlight the number of brands that participated, a total of 13, the number of good luck. And last, the good following by the media.

I confess that the awards also seek to sinceramente, este año nos ha sorprendido el incremento de make the brands display better watches every year and thus las ‘super piezas’ presentadas. Vamos por buen camino. compete with more chances to win.

SIAR was created in Mexico and is an effective formula to introduce the American continent to SIHH, which is held in Geneva. From this standpoint, what does SIAR Europe add? What SIAR added in its debut in Mexico in 2007 was the novelty of bringing in public connoisseurs of the brands. Until then, watch shows like Baselworld and SIHH only received professionals, jewellers and wholesalers, and the press. The same thing that made the difference in the Mexican edition is also what works in Madrid. Why did you choose Madrid as the venue? To start, because since 2013, watch sales are once again having good results in Spain. Then, because there was eagerness by our partners to have a show like SIAR in Madrid and because this city is the most central part of the country so that jewellers and aficionados who want to can come from other

The distinctive traits of SIAR Europe “SIAR is an accelerator of market development, because it helps turn haute horlogerie into an event that attracts wider interest, like ARCO does with art or Fitur does with tourism. Spain has always been an important market for watches and SIAR is helping it return to its natural place which had been lost with the crisis. What is special about the edition here is that since there are way fewer brands as of now than in Mexico, it is a more private show in terms of customer care, more celebrative and refined thanks to the palace setting."

The Latin market is more impulsive when it comes to buying and comes to SIAR in search of complicated pieces and limited editions…usually hard to find at “El mercado latino busca je-wellery shops. piezas complicadas y Meanwhile, SIAR Europe is making it so a Do you think that there is a deeply ediciones limitadas, en penchant for everyday watches is making a rooted watch culture in Spain? We are on the right track. Spain. There is enthusiasm and knowledge, without doubt. parts of Spain. It was also influenced by the fact that most of the subsidiaries of watch brands in Spain are located in Madrid.

It is also true that tourism helps us a lot in this regard. Certainly; luxury purchases are increa-singly more associated with this type of travel. Therefore, you cannot only consider a local public, but also an international one, like what currently happens in Paris, London, Hong Kong, New York and Miami. What are the medium-term objectives for SIAR? Consolidate the show as a not-to-be-missed annual engagement on the international watch calendar. To do so, we want to exhibit 25 brands with a good mix between well-established firms and interesting independent creators and thus attract aficionados not only from Spain, but from other countries because of the importance of what is exhibited here.

Imagine that you ask me the time and that I, to answer you, look at my smartphone. What would you tell me to convince of the virtues of mechanical watches? I would never convince someone to buy a fine watch to tell the time or to go and time races. Nor would I tell someone to buy artwork to decorate. Then? You would do well to buy a smartphone to have a lot of functions and a mechanical watch for the sake of understanding, of knowing the scientific and artistic expertise that it encompasses and of receiving emotional pleasure in exchange. Of course it will also give you the time, and if you are well advised you will also make a good investment, something that never happens with the ephemeral technology of a smartwatch.

What is your opinion of the participation of brands like Bell & Ross or Chopard? They are not “Cuando el público empieza Patek Philippe recently organised the part of the Richemont Group. a entender todo lo que hay Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand It does not matter which group they belong de científico, filosófico, Exhibition in London. The chef with the most Michelin stars in the world has decided to give his cuisine a twist by creating a menu based on three foods: fish, vegetables and cereals. The dethroning of animal protein, especially that coming from meat, has begun.

More naturalness, less fat The chef has taken this proposal to the restaurant of the recently reopened Plaza Athénée hotel in Paris. Ducasse has created a menu based on fish, vegetables and cereals, thus eliminating other ingredients that brought fame to his dishes, like foie gras and hare. The focus is clear: more naturalness and lightness, less preparation and saturated fat.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the song: “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”. Its riff, perhaps one of the most famous in the history of rock, shot the Rolling Stones to the top of the charts in the US.

A satisfactory unease The year 1965 was an important year in the development of Rock. The classic novel gave way to the renegade spirit of the Beat Generation, films were behind the times and the pace was marked by music, fashion and Pop Art. It was the same year that –cursed decision!– Bob Dylan let down his fans by electrifying folk. Also at the time, the album The Rolling Stones No. 2 was released, with liner notes making reference to Anthony Burgess’s famous novel A Clockwork Orange, suggesting that one attack a blind man to get the money to buy the album.

I Can’t Get No-Satisfaction”.

All this and much more was possible in 1965. It was a supposedly prosperous years for baby boomers, the American post-war generation, but that was not the case. Members of the richest, safest and most-educated working class in history said no, they were not satisfied. And of course, they used the famous song by the Stones as their anthem. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was born in the Gulf Motel in Clearwater, Florida. Keith Richards suddenly woke up with a melody in his head. Only half-way finished, he grabbed his guitar and recorded it on the cassette player next to the bed. It was a reversal of the melody of Dancing in the Street, Martha and the Vandellas' hit record. When he woke up, he rewound the tape and discovered the riff. He played it for Jagger and said: “the words that go to this are ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction’”. Words that, incidentally, came from a verse of “30 Days” by Chuck Berry. The first recording of the song, by sound engineer Ron Malo, was done in Chicago. It was an acoustic version that Keith Richards thought seemed suspiciously like the Californian folk of the time, which he hated To make matters worse, the session was marked by the (relatively unexpected) absence of Brian Jones, the group’s spiritual leader. His boisterous sexual exploits and his dangerous relationship with LSD were posing a threat; band manager Andrew Loog Oldham was running out of patience. Two days later, the Rolling Stones flew to Los Angeles to finish “Satisfaction”. They met at the famous RCA Studios with Jack Nitzsche, songwriter and occasional keyboardist for the band, and Dave Hassinger, musical engineer. Richards was crying out for more distortion on his guitar: “This riff's really gotta hang hard and long”, he exclaimed. They turned up the amps, but it wasn't rough enough. To fix it, Ian Stewart went to Eli Wallach’s Music City and came back with the new Gibson fuzztone box, the first ever made by the company. The box did the trick, creating a bold double track of Richards playing with a mechanical roar. Thus, an acoustic recording in Chicago was enveloped by a distorted guitar, a new baseline by Bill and very rough drum and percussion tracks.

45-minute counter and moving the seconds counter to the middle of the tourbillon. It is without doubt the centre of attention, which is perhaps why the in-house developers made it so the carriage moves in such an unusual way. Instead of being driven by the pinion of the seconds wheel, the tourbillon carriage is set into motion by an intermediate wheel of the running seconds display. This configuration enables an extremely broad opening onto the upper plate, thus affording a greater view of the tourbillon. It comes in platinum and in a limited edition of 26 units. The last of this series of chronographs is the Harmony Chronograph Small Model, a watch for her of which 260 units have been made. While the others have a 42 mm case, this one has a 37 mm one. Made in pink gold, it boasts a bezel set with 84 diamonds amounting to a total of 1.2 carats. Equipped with the hand-wound calibre 1142, an improved version of an already existing calibre which now exceeds the requirements of the Poinçon de Genève and increases its frequency (3 Hz instead of 2.5) to improve the shock resistance of the balance wheel. It indicates hours, minutes, chronograph (30-minute counter at 3 o’clock) and features a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. Lastly, Vacheron Constantin has created a Harmony featuring a dual time zone. The second time zone indicator is located between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock. Parallel to it but smaller is a second sub-dial showing the day/night information of the second time zone. There are three references available (two for men and one for women) for a total of 635 pieces.

located around the dial. The graduated scale measures pulse on a 30-beat scale, which is a clear tribute to the doctors’ watches of the time. Its manual-winding calibre 3300, which provides a 65-hour power reserve, has an innovative chronograph activation system (it is equipped with a dragging 45-minute counter replacing the traditional 30-minute counter). In traditional chronographs, the mechanism does not start unless the pushbutton is pressed firmly enough. This “all or nothing” prevents the gears and cams from being set into motion until the mechanism has actually started. To improve these sequences, Vacheron Constantin uses two hammers instead of one for the start, stop and reset functions. It is available in an edition limited to 260 units. The third Harmony chronograph, also monopusher, adds the tourbillon complication. Due to its visibility and imposing size, the indicators are arranged in a different manner on the dial than in the above two chronographs, increasing the size of the

In fact, this was debated at the most recent edition of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. There was a discussion on pioneering projects like those being conducted at certain schools in Barcelona where they are working with smartphones in the classroom. Mobile phones or tablets, with the right applications, are truly a useful tool. They eliminate the hand/eye coordination problem that children have with the computer mouse, they can be used to search for information and create audiovisual presentations, and they facilitate interaction among classmates, which improves cooperative work among them. There are also other very illustrative examples. Many of you, when you studied natural sciences, saw a one-dimensional representation of a cell printed on the page of your textbook. Now, thanks to 3D technology, young people can see a cell’s colour and understand that it has volume and is a dynamic, living thing. The truth is that a world of possibilities opens up. For instance, there are schools in which secondary students program apps to be used by younger students. In other words, in addition to making good use of mobile devices, these devices prepare students skills-wise to enter an increasingly more technically sophistica-ted and demanding job market.

The Poinçon de Genève certification –established in 1886 to protect the craftsmanship of Geneva– has over time because a guarantee of quality for the fine watchmaking industry of Switzerland. To obtain the seal, manufacturers must create timepieces that meet a number of requirements relating to accuracy, water-tightness and the beauty of the movements. Its prestige is undeniable; however, for many manufacturers, this seal is insufficient on a technical level and too restrictive, as it leaves out all brands not operating from Geneva.

Other initiatives There are obviously others players in the industry that have also decided to create their own certifications. Chopard, Parmigiani and Bovet created the Qualité Fleurier seal in 2001 based on five mandatory requirements: the watch must be manufactured 100% in Switzerland (except for the bracelet and buckle); it must be COSC certified; it must have exquisite decoration; it must pass Certificado que acredita la obtención del sello ‘Master the Fleuritest (a machine was speCo-Axial’ cially created to measure accuracy and rhythm while simulating natural movements of everyday use); and it must pass the Chronofiable Test. Another notable case is that of Patek Philippe, which created the Patek Philippe Seal in 2009. The Manufacture requires greater precision, as the rate accuracy must lie within the range of -3/+2 seconds per 24 hours. In terms of external elements like the bracelet or the diamonds used on inlays, the Genevan company only uses materials of the highest quality. For example, it only uses Top Wesselton Internally Flawless diamonds.

The eight criteria of the Official Master Co-Axial Certificate: 1. The function of the movement during exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss. 2. The deviation of the running time of the watch in six positions. 3. The deviation of the running time of the watch between 0 and 2/3 power reserve. 4. The function of the watch during exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss. 5. The deviation of the average daily precision of the watch after exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss. 6. The average daily precision of the watch in tests replicating daily wearing conditions (six positions, two temperatures). 7. The power reserve of the watch (autonomy – functioning without winding). 8. The water resistance of the watch (tested in water).

His life, a journey of light and shadow, included periods of bohemia and conservatism, of poverty and financial solvency, of baroque prose and romantic poetry, and, of course, of success and failure.

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer was born in Seville (in the parish of San Lorenzo Martyr) on 17 February 1836 of the marriage between José María Domínguez Bécquer and Joaquina María Bastida. Only the façade remains of his house at number 26 Calle Conde de Barajas in the neighbourhood of San Lorenzo. If we could travel back in time and see through the walls, we would know that Bécquer was much more than a poet; in fact, he was a highly cultured person who could have succeeded in other artistic disciplines like painting or music. Today we know that he had an early interest in drawing, a speciality dominated by his father, a renowned genre artist of the time, and his brother Valeriano, to whom he was always closely attached. Bécquer drew well, which would cause him problems in the future, as he was fired from the Department of National Heritage in Madrid for wasting his time making sketches of characters from Hamlet. To see his skill, just take a look at the drawings in the Libro de cuentas that the young Bécquer used as a canvas. Music was another of his great passions, something that was continually remembered by his friends and family. He was quite skilled with a piano or guitar in his hands. These two instruments symbolically reflect the two musical styles that inspired him most: classical music and Andalusian folk music. Music will again and again find its way into his legends and his Rimas, intimately tied to nature and to the neo-Platonic theories of the harmony of the cosmos inherited from the Sevillian school of poetry. Thus, his passion for melody is not artificial, but rather his creative process appears to be closely linked to poetic composition. This combination of music and poetry is well reflected in the legend El Miserere, where an artist is attempting to create the greatest work with the help of the feelings aroused in him by nature: …my only thought was to find a musical form that was so magnificent, so sublime, that it would suffice to contain the great hymn of sorrow of King Prophet (…) The music sounded to the rhythm of their voices: that music was the distant rumble of thunder which, after the storm, retreated whispering; it was the hum of the air that moaned in the hollow of the mountain (...). All this was the music and something more that cannot be explained or even conceived (...). The indelible imprint of letters Bécquer’s interest in literature came about in a rather unanticipated way. His father died in 1841, and five years later, Bécquer was accepted at the San Telmo School, a mixed institution also dedicated to caring for orphaned children. There, in the midst of his education, the author received classes from poet Alberto Lista, a prestigious representative of Andalusian literature. But that was not all; there were two more events that defined the professional future of our author. The first occurred after the death of his mother (1846) and the closing of the San Telmo School. Bécquer was extremely disoriented and was

thanks to the Cuban Ramón Rodríguez Correa, with whom he began at the Department of National Heritage as a clerk. Nevertheless, he never stopped trying. He resumed his literary production by writing biographies for councillors like Gabriel Hugelman, articles for publications like Porvenir, and a couple of plays, including Esmeralda. He even began a large informational project, which would ultimately be one of his greatest desires and failures: Historia de los templos de España. He published it over some time, while the protectorate of Queen Elizabeth II lasted. Little by little, his presence on the literary scene increased, at the same time that poetry left behind the epic to embrace simpler lexicon and metrics. The influence that Byron and Heine had on Bécquer were notorious, which was coupled with the contribution of Spanish writers like Barrantes and Florentino Sanz, who refashioned traditional ballads and songs with a more natural, familiar language. These years (1859-1860) showed a young, enthusiastic Bécquer who was at a high point of creation, both in prose and in verse. He finally felt like he had found the poetic path and that he wasn’t alone in this endeavour. He often visited the halls of the musician Joaquín Espín y Guillén, where he met the two sisters which would have such a major influence on him: Josefina and Julia Espín. He took part in the courtship typical of these places, and in the Espín's albums, he left a series of wonderful drawings and autobiographical rhymes (Rima VI, XX and the future Rima XXVII). Everything at this time seemed to converge: music, women, poetry, love…everything which for Bécquer represented a clear vital universe: Poetry is you, I've said, because poetry is feeling and feeling is woman (...). Poetry is, ultimately, all those inexplicable phenomena that change the soul of the woman when it awakens feeling and passion (…). Love is poetry; religion is love. (…) Religion is love and, because it is love, it is poetry.

Following the author’s trail Today it is possible to track Bécquer’s life within the centre of Seville. One can visit Calle Conde de Barajas, where he grew up and where there is now a commemorative plaque. Of course, it is essential to visit the Museum of Fine Arts, which contains the portrait of Bécquer painted by his brother. You must also go to the Pantheon of Illustrious Sevillians located at Calle Laraña beneath the Temple of Annunciation. Gustavo Adolfo and Valeriano Bécquer are buried there. Take a pause and go to the restaurant Las Escobas, the place where Bécquer had discussions with other intellectuals of the time. Lastly, the Glorieta de Bécquer in María Luisa Park is a must visit site. Created in 1910, it consists of the bust of the poet on a pedestal, while behind him there are three female figures lying on a bench: “enlightened love”, “possessed love” and “lost love”, which represent the rhyme El amor que pasa.

LITERATURA ANTONIO GARRIDO

It's not about having to tell something; it's about having something important to tell”

El ultimo paraíso (The Ultimate Paradise) is Antonio Garrido’s (Linares, 1963) third novel and has earned him the prestigious Fernando Lara Novel Award 2015. The book tells the story of Jack Beilis, a North American of Jewish descent who finds himself having to leave his country to live in the remote and supposedly idyllic Soviet Union. Naturally, things aren’t what they seem.

Before the revolution, the USSR was an archaic country, with an oligarchy similar to the tsars and a society structured by masters and slaves. The country managed to turn things around with a very marked ideology and a practical strategy, embodied by Stalin. He had absolutely no scruples and decided to buy a factory identical to the largest one in the US and set it up in Russia. He copied Ford’s model. How did he do it? He needed qualified technicians and put out an appeal through the Amtorg agency; we mustn't forget that diplomatic relations between the two countries were non-existent. The Americans who wanted to leave the best country in the world to end up in a place full of misery were desperate people. They were amazed, because in the USSR it was virtually impossible to own your own home as a result of individual effort. Enter Jack Beilis and his travelling companions. Of course, because the situation I describe is closely related to the people who evidently are those ultimately affected by it. Conflicts themselves are just numbers, it is documentary. We need specific examples to be able to understand what could happen to us. Currently there are more than 60 million displaced people living somewhere other than their own country for different reasons. The response of thousands of desperate families fighting for survival was very similar to what is happening now, and this really interests me. It's not about having to tell something; it's about having something important to tell. I think this is the difference between this book and the previous ones. Until now, your work has focussed on the period of Charlemagne, Ancient China (13th century) and now contemporary times. Is it true that history repeats itself? What is true is that the soul has always remained unchanged: ambition, egoism, envy, passion, but we also have kindness,

The history of Blancpain is closely tied to the development of the Swiss watch industry, an industry which, like others in other countries, expanded thanks to certain political and religious decisions. In this case, the trigger was Juan Calvino’s (1509-1564) arrival to Geneva, where he was exiled from Paris after converting to Protestantism.

One of them, located in the village of Villeret, was the Blancpain family farm; the first floor was used as a small workshop in the 1730s at the initiative of Jehan-Jacques Blancpain, who alternated watchmaking with his work as a schoolteacher. Although he had most likely been conducting this profession for some time, it wasn’t until 1735 when he declared the activity that the name Blancpain appeared for the first time in the official documents of Villeret, thus considering this the year that the brand was born. The family business began to flourish and soon the first pocket watches made entirely by Jehan-Jacques Blancpain began to come out of the workshop. Although the succession seemed truncated, given that his son wanted to keep working as a schoolteacher, it was his grandson, David-Louis, who took over

For the case, Blancpain chose a double-stepped 40 mm case in red gold. It is coupled with a minimalist opaline dial with applied Roman numerals traversed by delicate leaf-shaped hands. As seen in the picture, the double display window is located at six o’clock. The other watches that have captured our attention are those in the creative Shakudo series. The word “shakudo” refers to the technique used to obtain an alloy of copper and gold that, depending on its composition and texture, can acquire a dark patina with brown, blue and black tones. The Japanese used this fusion to create fittings for swords, jewellery and other decorative objects which could also be engraved. Blancpain has now dared to apply it to the field of watchmaking with timepieces demonstrating the expertise of its craftsmen and women in the various métiers d’art practiced under its roof. The Manufacture has created four different models that combine the techniques of shakudo, engraving and Damascening. Each piece is unique, as different nuances and depths are obtained depending on the sensitivity of the engraver and on his or her style of using the rokusho patina. A particularly surprising model is the one whose dial features the image of Ganesh, one of the most revered gods of the Hindu pantheon, recognisable by his elephant head. Shelby American launches the Shelby Cobra 427 50th Anniversary, a limited edition of only 50 vehicles to commemorate as many years of life of one of the world's most iconic roadsters.

An unmistakable look Cartier offers the new Clé in its version for men with a 40 mm diameter, a surprising size at first sight. The case gains prominence over the dial and both elements seem to add up to more than what they really do, so bravo for the engineers for the house! For now, aficionados of the brand can choose between white gold and pink gold, although the firm has assured that next year there will be a stainless steel version. For women, Cartier initially presents two models in 35 mm, both in white gold with set diamonds, and one in 31 mm in pink gold. What remains unchanged in all models is the layout of the dial. It is an unquestionably “made in Cartier” dial: it features large Roman numerals, the sub-dial in guilloche and sword-shaped hands. It adds a central second hand and a small aperture for the date at 6 o’clock.

The crown, its big secret Cartier has a long history in creating innovative crowns, and the Clé collection firmly embraces this legacy. This time it is not only one of the defining features of the watch, but also the inspiration for its name. “Clé” means key in French, and the crown unmistakably resembles a key. The act of resetting the time and date introduces a new gesture to the world of watchmaking, a gesture that recalls the turning of a key to wind up a clock, as was done before. Although the considerable size of the crown makes it exceptionally easy to grip, functionality is not its only trait. We could say that it is an exquisite object in its own right –elongated and pure, adorned with a sapphire that is inserted inside the crown, unlike a classic setting, and is perfectly flush with the metal that surrounds it–. This is all coupled with great ease of use, as the time on the watch can be set very simply. After making the adjustments, the crown can be pushed back in place and put back in its vertical position without moving the hands.

housing the tomb serviceably protected by soldiers in the middle. Absolute respect is required: proper clothing, uncrossed arms, hands out of pockets and, of course, no pictures. After this visit, the next place that must be seen is the One Pillar Pagoda located just a few metres from the mausoleum. What is striking is its structure, which is reminiscent of a lotus flower. It consists of a stone column measuring 1.25 metres in diameter providing support to wooden pillars that hold up the whole structure. We once again find a beautiful story to understand why it was built. This small Buddhist temple dates back to the 11th century, heritage of the Ly dynasty. Emperor Ly Thai Tùng had no heirs, but he dreamt that he met the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara who was sitting on a lotus flower when she handed him a baby son. The next day, the leader met a peasant girl, who he courted and with whom he eventually had the son he so desired. Ly Th·i Tùng decided to build the pagoda in gratitude to the deity. Today, many couples come to the pagoda to ask for at least one son. The street, the resistance The main tourist attractions of Hanoi should not detract from what matters most: daily life in the city. It is truly worth it to visit the old neighbourhood. Its narrow streets are home to a market that is quite different from the concept of market that we have. The ground floors of the houses are occupied by stands run by entire families who usually live just above. They display their wares on the sidewalk. Refrigeration is a secondary matter, because most of what they have to offer is fresh. It is all about colour and smell. There are all kinds of rice, not to mention the variety of fruits, vegetables, beans and meat. Would you dare to eat red jellyfish or silkworms? Here you can. From the market, where you will see delivery drivers on a Vespino loaded with seven or eight bales, you can reach the famous Long Bien Bridge. It was the first steel bridge built over the Red River and is one of the most important symbols of Vietnamese resistance to American attacks. The bridge was bombed (coincidentally, it was built by the French firms Deydè and Pillè) because of its strategic position, as at the time it connected Hanoi to the port of Haiphong. From here, there are idyllic, as well as quite interesting, images of the capital. Under the rusty metal structure, there are peasants working tirelessly; on it, couples take wedding pictures with the waters of the Red River in the background. Night falls and it s time to have a Bia Hoy, the traditional beer of the capital made from rice. So, cheers! Or as they say here, Zo!

Sapa, the land of endless rice paddies If you have time, you shouldn’t miss the mountains of Sapa located 300 km north of Hanoi. There’s no doubt that the most fun way to get there is by train. Just on the other side of the Long Bien Bridge is the capital’s railway station, from which you can take a sort of Orient Express that will leave you in Lào Cai eight hours later. From there, there is another 34 km bus ride to reach Sapa in the Lien Hoang Son Mountain Range near the Chinese border. Its strategic location led the French to establish a military base here in 1880, thus altering the peaceful life of the area’s inhabitants. Today it has become one of the most visited spots in the country. The town is located in a valley surrounded by spectacular rice terraces that descend down the slopes of the mountains, which are home to up to eight different ethnic groups.
