From the editor I have been a Photographer for over 18 years. When I started there were no Maternity gowns on the market. All we used was fabrics or Mens clothing. The style was classic black and white as well as working with fabrics slightly draped over. Photography has trends like any market - they come and go. Lately the trend for classic black and white imagery for Maternity has come back. I feel it never left, but with the rise of constant social media, it is just more prevalent. Posting on social media isn’t always easy with the nude subject. It seems like lines are crossed and many are left not understanding what is acceptable content to post or not. Last year we had a Barely There Nude Facebook group. I was out of the Country traveling and not on social media, only to come home and find out it had been removed. Why? Nude content? Not quite sure, but most likely so. I hear all the time from many Photographers that their accounts on Facebook or Instagram are quite often suspended for posting Maternity nude content. But we see Nude images posted all the time - how do some get thru and others do not? I believe as we go along in this social media crazy soaked world we hope that the lines become more clear when it comes to the Nude subject and how it is translated in the artistic form - whether thru photography or related imagery. As Artists, our job is to create the work we are called to do. We thank all of the Photograhers for their contribution to this Magazine and the Photography Community. Ana Brandt

It is important to make sure you receive permission from your clients before posting their nude or barely nude images on your website OR Social Media. When asking their permissions, verify WHICH social media account you want to post. For example some clients may say ok to Instagram but not Facebook. Many of my clients are Professionals and do not want their nude images on social media at all. I always ask before posting. When you are working with models, make sure you also include it in their signed agreement that they authorize you to post their images on social. Some accounts will be suspended for posting nude images. We suggest you make sure you post images in good “taste” and that no personal “parts” are showing. You will see many Photographers block out the nipple area, for example on Instagram. Do not post too many nude images at one time. Post one, and allow it to sit in the social media circle for awhile to see if your account is going to be flagged or not. When posting to Instagram, a good idea is to use the multi image feature, and therefore have the first screen mention to “swipe right” for Nude images. This will quite often prevent young children from seeing it flash on the phone - especially if they can’t read! Choose Nude Images that have angles. For example Instagram does not want full nude buttocks. Therefore it is best to show nude images that have dramatic lighting, and show curves while not just showing the full body. With the rise of interest in breastfeeding photos, Instagram and Facebook now allow breastfeeding images provided it is good taste. Overly graphic images or sexual activity are not permitted. When posting couples, be careful on the angles of the couple that you are posting. Above all, be respectful of your artwork, your subject and the commercial space in which we all live and promote our work in.

Make sure the room is a comfortable temperature to be nude in. You don’t want your subjects to be too cold or too hot. Make sure your subject has eaten before the shoot. Good lighting is important and the key to everything. Make sure you are paying attention to how the light falls on the subject. Have skin softening lotions available that aren’t too oily or shiny but that the client can use to moisturize their skin. (unless you want the oily look) Talk to your client ahead of time before they disrobe to find out what type of poses they are interested in. Make sure they are comfortable with you directing them. Avoid having a lot of people in the room. Try and just have you and the subject to allow for a more comfortable experience. Have a clean bathrobe ready for them to put on before and after the session. Keep a variety of fabrics handy in at least 2 or 3 yards. Have light airy transparent fabrics that allow light to shine in. Do your research before the session of best poses. Ask your client to let you know what types of nude poses they are looking for. Suggest your clients nail color be a non distracting color or pattern, ie nude color. French nails can often be a distraction. Blow Up beds are great to use for nude subjects so they have a comfortable place to lay rather than the floor. However using the floor allows for a clean look. Make sure to discuss retouching desires with your clients so you do not over and under

With Nude Photography we know it is all about lighting! We show two lighting setups using low key lighting in this Magazine. Keep in mind, there are so many variables, settings and optional setups for lighting - the idea is to experiment and be creative.

In the example below the subject is slightly off center with the light. The light is a big higher falling down. Light is slightly below half power.

Canon Mark IV Canon 24-70 USM II Shutter 160 ISO 160 Aperture 3.2

In this example the subject is parallel with the light and so the effect is almost split lighting. A bit of light is wrapping around but the shadows are strong as subject turns away.
