At Familius, our mission has always been simple: to help families be happy. Usually, we do that through bedtime stories, relationship guides, gifts and games, or shared recipes. But this fall, we are publishing what may be the most important book in our history—one that protects the very ground those families stand on.
We are proud to announce How to Save Democracy: The Anti-Authoritarian Playbook by Melissa Dalton-Bradford.
You may know Melissa from her soulful works Global Mom, On Loss and Living Onward, or Let Me TellYou My Story. Melissa is an independent scholar, a global humanitarian, and a significant social media influencer in this space. While this new title may seem like a departure, we believe it is an essential extension of our mission. Happiness cannot exist without agency, and families cannot thrive without freedom.
Any policy that curtails the free exercise of conscience, the right to property, or the protection of life is a direct threat to the kitchen table. When the rule of law is ignored, a family’s ability to stay together and flourish is jeopardized.
While many books diagnose the problems of our age, Melissa has written a practical, research-backed guide that moves beyond theory to offer ordinary citizens short-term and long-term strategies to reinforce the institutions that shield our homes.
We publish this book because we believe that a happy home requires a stable, free, and just society. Thank you for partnering with us to not only celebrate the family but to help protect the foundations that make “family” possible.
With gratitude,
A Quilt of Stars
Astronaut Karen Nyberg Stitches a Dream
KAREN NYBERG AND ANN MCCALLUM STAATS
ILLUSTRATIONS BY ALIDA MASSARI
What would you do with an impossible dream? Dr. Karen Nyberg yearned to reach the stars, and when they were finally within grasp, she wanted to share the extraordinary sight with the world. Seeing that the Earth from a distance was like a quilted masterpiece of people and places, she put her skills with needle and thread to use—in space! When Nyberg lived on the International Space Station, she and NASA invited crafters from around the world to join a project to stitch together a global community quilt. Thousands of people from more than 30 countries stitched quilt squares that were combined to make 28 king-size quilts displayed at the 40th International Quilt Festival in Houston. With dreamy illustrations from Alida Massari that perfectly capture Nyberg’s starry quilt and fun facts about space on every page, A Quilt of Stars is an accurate retelling of Karen Nyberg’s true story. This book is an inspiration to those in love with STEM and art, teaching children that anyone with a goal, a community, and a dash of persistence can stitch together a dream. Ages 5–7
Karen Nyberg is an astronaut, engineer, artist, and mother who, through nearly 30 years of experience in human spaceflight, has developed a deep appreciation for the value of cooperation across diverse ideologies and values to care for our home planet and its inhabitants.

Field mouse decorates a tree. She squints and says, “What’s that I see?” Here comes snowflake. Rumble, rumble. There goes field mouse. Tumble, tumble.
Asnowflake lands on a mountaintop. It flips and flops, tumbling down into the valley below. First it rolls over Field Mouse, then Rabbit. And that’s when things really begin to snowball. The Elephant in the Room
HOLLIE WOLVERTON ILLUSTRATIONS BY KRISZTINA BUZA
There’s an elephant in the room. It didn’t seem like a big deal at first. But now . . . it’s making me uncomfortable!
Afamily of four is facing one problem: a literal elephant inside their home. Ignoring it works at first, but then it gets bigger . . . and bigger . . . and bigger! Can they listen and work together before they’re flattened by the elephant in the room? A literal interpretation of the famous idiom, The Elephant in the Room is a hilarious example of what happens when you ignore a problem. Perfect for storytime and classroom read-alouds, it introduces idioms, builds problem-solving skills, and is a heartwarming tool for social-emotional growth. And best of all, it’s laugh-out-loud fun for the entire family! With clever dialogue by Hollie Wolverton and giggle-worthy illustrations by Krisztina Buza, this picture book teaches kids that ignoring problems doesn’t make them go away and that it’s OK to ask for help. Because teamwork can solve even elephant-size problems. Ages 3–5
Playing with words has always been part of Hollie Wolverton’s life—from winning Boggle as a kid to studying journalism in college to working in corporate communications—but it wasn’t until she became a mom that she added writing picture books to the list. A decade later, she continues making stories to inspire, enlighten, and entertain both kids and the grown-ups reading to them.
Krisztina Buza has been passionate about drawing since childhood, and after becoming a mother her love for illustration found new life. Today she brings that passion into children’ s books, striving to capture the same magic that has inspired her since she was little.

The Reward Trap
Why Rewards Backfire and the Real Science of Motivating Kids
ÖZGÜR BOLAT
Every loving parent uses rewards—gold stars, treats, praise, privileges—believing they’re nurturing their child’s motivation and self-esteem. But what if seven decades of scientific research reveals we’re doing the exact opposite? What if we are unknowingly sabotaging our children’s motivation? Dr. Özgür Bolat, award-winning researcher and media sensation, dares to ask the hard questions: Why do rewards crush motivation instead of building it? Why can’t core values be taught through external incentives? What hidden dangers await children raised on a steady diet of rewards? Using the latest groundbreaking research and real-life cases, The Reward Trap explores what rewards are really doing to our children and how we can avoid the pitfalls of external validation on the road to internal motivation. With every page, you’ll discover evidence-based strategies that work in real family life, not just in research labs. No more battles over motivation. No more worrying about your child’s self-esteem. No more anxiety about whether you’re doing enough. Just genuine connection and your child’s authentic development into a confident, motivated, and emotionally secure individual who is happy from within. Free from the hidden trap of rewards, your child will develop genuine character because they want to, not because they have to. It’s the kind of inner happiness no reward can buy.
• LEADING RESEARCH: Drawing on cutting-edge research across psychology, education, motivation science, and neuroscience, and supported by real-life cases, The Reward Trap addresses parents’ most pressing concerns and offers groundbreaking solutions.

How to Save Democracy
The Anti-Authoritarian Playbook
MELISSA DALTON-BRADFORD
How do democracies die? We’re watching it happen in real time. Elected domestic and international leaders are undermining democratic institutions, weaponizing government agencies, and fueling dangerous polarization. Turn on the news—or scroll social media— and the result is everywhere: fear, anger, and a growing sense of helplessness as citizens wonder, I’m just one person—what can I possibly do? More than simple analysis, How to Save Democracy: The Anti-Authoritarian Playbook empowers everyday citizens with practical, peaceful steps to turn anxiety into action and defend democratic institutions. Drawing on history, scholarly research, and her own experience working with refugees across Europe and Asia, Melissa Dalton-Bradford lays out core patterns in the authoritarian playbook, provides global examples of how these patterns have played out in history and modern day, and offers solutions for how citizens—as individuals and as groups—can take immediate action to reverse the erosion of democracy in their communities.
Melissa DaltonBradford is a writer, independent scholar, world citizen, and mother. She holds a BA in German and an MA in comparative literature, both from Brigham Young University. She speaks, reads and writes fluent German, French, and Norwegian, is conversant in Mandarin, and has taught language, humanities, and writing on the university level. Bradford has performed professionally as a soprano soloist and actress in the US, Scandinavia, Central Europe, and Southeast Asia. She and her husband raised their family of four children in Hong Kong, Vienna, Oslo, Paris, Munich, Singapore, Geneva, and Frankfurt.
“An indispensable blueprint for understanding what’s at stake and the concrete actions every citizen who cares about preserving democracy can take.”

Recovering Hope
Science-Based Tools for Long-Term Healing from Depression, Anxiety, and Addiction
CLAY OLSEN AND JACOB HESS
What if what we’ve been told about mental health isn’t the whole truth? For years, we’ve been told that depression, anxiety, and addiction are lifelong conditions—manageable at best, never truly healable. But mounting evidence and thousands of lived experiences suggest otherwise. In Recovering Hope, Clay Olsen, founder of the addiction recovery organization Fight the New Drug, and Jacob Hess, PhD, challenge the discouraging narrative surrounding mental illness and present a bold, research-backed alternative: that deep, lasting healing is not only possible—it’s already happening. Regardless of biological predisposition and chemical imbalances, the accessible strategies in this guide target changeable variables in lifestyle and environment, such as sleep, nutrition, movement, and connection, for long-term relief. With reflection prompts, real stories, and an approachable tone and structure, this compassionate mindset shift restores hope for a life free from mental health challenges. Combining science with practical mental health tools, this book reveals why the current mental health model often fails to deliver real relief, what cutting-edge research says about the brain’s ability to heal and rewire, how small lifestyle changes can lead to powerful emotional transformation, and how to foster hope, even in the midst of darkness.
Clay Olsen is a social entrepreneur and leader in mental health advocacy. As CEO and founder of Impact Suite and cofounder of Fight the New Drug, he has helped thousands of individuals find lasting recovery from depression, anxiety, and addiction. He also serves as president of PHASE (Prevention and Healing Against Sexual Exploitation), uniting organizations and community leaders to combat sexual exploitation and trafficking.
Jacob Hess, PhD, is a community psychologist, mindfulness teacher, and staff writer at Deseret News. With a doctorate from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Hess has dedicated his career to deeply understanding and thoughtfully challenging convention narratives around mental health treatment.
• CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH: Drawing from the latest studies and conversations around depression, anxiety, and addiction, this book looks beyond the tired “chemical imbalance” narrative toward lasting healing.
• OPTIMISTIC PERSPECTIVE: Hopeful and compassionate, it encourages readers to focus on resilience, changeable variables, and the possibility of a life free from mental health challenges.
• PRACTICAL TOOLS: More than a mindset shift, it offers simple, accessible tools that target past trauma and present lifestyle to create lasting mental wellness.
• EXPERT AUTHORS: The research and strategies in this guide are backed by the expertise of leaders in the mental health space, Clay Olsen, founder of Fight the New Drug, and Jacob Hess, PhD.

“An inspiration and a pathway to all who yearn for peace.” —Gerda Weissmann Klein, Holocaust survivor and author of All But My Life
A Land Twice Promised delves into the heart of one of the world’s most enduring and complex conflicts. Baum’s deeply personal memoir recounts her journey from girlhood in post-Holocaust Israel to her adult encounter with “the other.” With honesty, compassion, and humor, she captures the drama of a nation at war and her discovery of humanity in the enemy.
Born and raised in Jerusalem, Noa Baum is an award-winning storyteller. She performs and teaches internationally with diverse audiences ranging from The World Bank, the US Defense Department, and prestigious universities and congregations to inner-city schools and detention centers.
After the waning of her successful acting career, Mel Ryane found herself creatively adrift and proposed creating an after-school Shakespeare program at a local public school. A comedy of errors, but inspiring throughout, Teaching Will is a story for teachers, volunteers, actors, and parents—as well as anyone who’s ever had to let go of a dream.
