D E AR F R I E N DS , Happy Spring! Or Winter, depending on when you’re reading this. However, as I write this letter, it is very early Autumn, which means I should probably just say: HELLO, HAPPY WHATEVER SEASON IT IS! Last year, we changed our name to Emily McDowell & Friends, to welcome new collections by other writers and artists under our brand umbrella, and we kicked it off with Lisa Congdon.

Lisa is back for 2020 with more new work: an absolutely beautiful Zodiac series of 12 cards and 12 magnets. I am personally hoarding them as a set.

In case you are new to her work, Lisa is a hugely successful and hugely talented illustrator, fine artist, and author, with a brand in her own right and over 325,000 followers on social media. Lisa’s partnership with us is her largest licensedproduct collection to date, and I’m so honored that she’s chosen to work with us.

You'll find tons of great new stuff inside this catalog, including a journal and card featuring the most viral piece I’ve ever created. Called “Finding Yourself,” it was reposted and shared online more than a million times after I first gave it to the Instagram gods. The internet continues to astonish me.

E M PATHY CAR DS Support for Serious Illness and Loss Most of us struggle to find the right words in the face of a friend or loved one’s crisis, whether it’s cancer, chronic illness, a major loss, or anything else. It’s a really tough problem: Someone we love needs our support more than ever, but we don’t have the right language for it.

As a cancer survivor, Emily has a very personal stake in this game. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 24. After nine months of chemo and radiation, she went into remission and has been incredibly fortunate to be cancer-free since.

For Emily, the most difficult part of her illness wasn’t losing her hair, being erroneously called “sir” by Starbucks baristas, or sickness from chemo.

It was the loneliness and isolation as close friends and family members disappeared because they

didn’t know what to say or because they had said the absolute wrong thing without realizing it.

Emily created Empathy Cards to give people more authentic ways to communicate about illness and suffering. These cards have touched a nerve worldwide and have been featured by over 300 media outlets, including the New York Times, National Public Radio, and the Huffington Post.

Millions of people have shared the cards across all social media platforms, and we’ve received thousands of emails from customers sharing stories about the ways Empathy Cards have impacted their lives, a handful of which we’ve included here.
