the drugstore camera dennis hopper

The Drugstore Camera feels like a stumbled-upon treasure, a disposable camera you forgot about and only just remembered to develop. Yet in this case the photographer is Dennis Hopper and the photographs, remarkably, are never before published. Shot in Taos, New Mexico, where Hopper was based following the production of Easy Rider in the late 60s, the series was taken with disposable cameras and developed in drugstore photo labs. This clothbound collection documents Hopper’s friends and family among the ruins and open vistas of the desert landscape, female nudes in shadowy interiors, road trips to and from his home state of Kansas and impromptu still lifes of discarded objects. These images, capturing iconic individuals, wide-open Western terrain and drug-addled fun, create a captivating view of the 60s and 70s that combines political idealism and optimism with California cool. Dennis Hopper(1936–2010) was born in Dodge City, Kansas. He first appeared on television in 1954, and quickly became a cult actor, known for films such as Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Easy Rider (1969), The American Friend (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), Blue Velvet (1986) and Hoosiers (1986). In 1988, he directed the critically acclaimed Colors. Hopper was also a prolific photographer, and published now classic portraits of celebrities such as Andy Warhol and Martin Luther King Jr. His works are housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. ]

joseph szabo: rolling stones fans joseph szabo

"In 1978 as the school year drew to a close two of my high school students who had tickets to a Rolling Stones Concert approached me and asked if I would like to go with them to the concert. After discussing it with my wife Nancy, who thought it was a good idea and promising photo opportunity, I was enthusiastic to go for the experience. My students were delighted that I’d be joining them. Besides they needed me to drive us to Philadelphia from Long Island, New York. So off we went for whatever adventure might lay ahead. And I carefully packed my three 35mm cameras and plenty of b&w film to record the event. Recently, I was inspired to revisit the contact sheets from that one day and choose images that still spoke to me after so many years. Here are some of those photographs I took on June 17th at JFK Stadium surrounded by 90,000 Rolling Stones fans who were so open to my camera. One footnote... Bill and Chris, my two students, are still in touch and we are good friends to this day. I am forever grateful to them for our trip to that Rolling Stones Concert." Joseph Szabo is a teacher, photographer and author. He taught photography and art at Malverne High School on Long Island for 27 years and for over 20 years was on the faculty of the International Center of Photography in Manhattan. His 1978 book, Almost Grown, which featured many of his students as his subjects was acclaimed as one of the “Best Books of the Year” by the American Library Association. ]

the ghosts of ellis island jr and art spiegelman

The Unframed Ellis Island project is about bringing alive the memory of Ellis Island, the entry point to America for millions of immigrants. Coming from all over the world, leaving their belongings, their family and their past behind them, with the fear that they may be sent back to it, the presence of these people who have shaped the modern American identity can still be felt in the buildings, although abandoned for the past 70 years. This is the opportunity to interpret the stories of these people through art. Unframed is an ongoing project by JR, who uses images by famous or anonymous photographers and archival images. JR interprets them and takes them out of their context depending on the place, neighborhood or city he works in. In August 2014, JR was invited to work on the abandoned part of Ellis Island. This island, next to the Statue of Liberty, is very symbolic - the gateway to the United States for 12 million immigrants, from 1892 to 1954. On the south side of the island, the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital has been abandoned since 1954. JR revisited the archives of Ellis Island and created many installations in these buildings so full in stories. Art Spiegelman, the famous author of the graphic novel Maus, immigrated to the United States in 1951. He collaborates with JR on this book, illustrating on photographs, visiting notable stories of immigrants that came through Ellis Island. ]

drawings and ephemera stephen sprouse

Comprised of 1,500 separate pieces, including 600 original drawings, color Xeroxes, swatch references and inspiration materials, Stephen Sprouse: Drawings and Ephemera encompasses the design work of Sprouse (1953–2004) from 1974 through the late 1980s, focusing the foundational period in which the designer effortlessly fused New York uptown glamour with the edgy vibe of the East Village. The works on paper included here reveal Sprouse’s unmistakable energy: his facile and powerful inked lines, his use of the Xerox machine to apply vivid gouache color and his often capitalized marginalia all reveal the vibrant, unstoppable personality of a design genius. Also evident here is the powerful influence of two of Sprouse’s most important muses, Jackie Onassis and Debbie Harry of Blondie, the latter of whom wore the off-the shoulder short dress in 1978 that served as Sprouse’s public debut (Harry also provides the introduction to this volume). Even in these two figures, the uptown/downtown, high-end/punk tensions that pervade Sprouse’s work is apparent. Though recognized even at the tender age of 14 as a design prodigy, Sprouse’s commercial success alternately soared and stalled throughout the 1980s, but his assuredness of vision and unique concepts have made legendary contributions to the world of fashion. The intimacy of the sketches and designs collected here give the viewer a rare opportunity to draw closer to Stephen Sprouse and his frenetic career. Stephen Sprouse (1953–2004) launched his first collections in the early 1980s, at exclusive outlets such as Bergdorf Goodman, and to immediate critical acclaim. In the late 80s, Sprouse opened stores on Wooster St in New York and at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles. He died of lung cancer at the age of 50. ]

surf site tin type joni sternbach

Surf Site Tin Type is an homage to a sport, a way of life and to the people who practice it. Over the last decade, Joni Sternbach has created portraits in tintype of contemporary surfers that put the world of surfing in a completely new light. Stunning in their detail, these unique images evoke the romance of surfing and the strong individualism of the men and women who live to ride the waves. Working with a large format camera and using hand-poured tintype plates, Sternbach has profiled a fascinating range of people on beaches around the world, from Malibu to Montauk to Byron Bay, Australia. While most photographers deal with the action of surfing, Surf Site Tin Type captures the surfers and the settings that are the true essence of the sport. Surf Site Tin Type features texts by noted photo critic and historian Lyle Rexer, April M. Watson, Curator of photography at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, champion surfer, writer, and filmmaker Chris Malloy and Johnny Abegg. Joni Sternbach was born in the Bronx, New York. She graduated from New York University/International Center of Photography with an M.A. in Photography in 1987. She was part of the adjunct faculty at New York University for over 20 years, and is currently a visiting artist at Cooper Union in NYC, a faculty member at ICP, The Center for Alternative Photography where she specializes in teaching wet plate collodion. ]

tales of the brothers grimm. drawings by natalie frank natalie frank For Tales of the Brothers Grimm thirty-six celebrated and lesserknown of the unsanitized fairy tales collected by the illustrious brothers were carefully chosen by artist Natalie Frank, re-interpreted in seventy-five gouache and chalk pastel drawings, and cast in a Surrealist dreamscape. This will be the largest collection of Grimm’s Fairy Tales ever illustrated by a fine artist. Frank’s irreverent palette, sophisticated use of color, and inventive depiction of these dark, far from storybook narratives, capture the original stories with a contemporary and unflinching eye. Each of the tales opens with a handdrawn title page, is framed by a unique border, and small drawings punctuate each story, all in the tradition of classic fairy tale editions. The foremost Grimm scholar, Jack Zipes, introduces the book and contextualizes these stories and drawings within a history of the Brothers Grimm, its illustrations, and the tradition of the fairy tale. A complex and unique world of the imagination emerges from the pairing of these tales with Frank’s drawings, assembled by the celebrated designer, Marian Bantjes. Additional texts include a conversation between the artist and director Julie Taymor, as well as essays by Feminist art historian Linda Nochlin and curator Claire Gilman. This book marks Frank’s exhibitions of drawings based on the Brothers Grimm at The Drawing Center, New York, and Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, Austin, in 2015.

New York-based painter Natalie Frank was born in Austin Texas in 1980. She earned an M.F.A. in Visual Arts at Columbia University’s School of the Arts in 2006 and holds a B.A. in Studio Art from Yale University. In 2003-2004, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for study at the National Academy of Fine Art in Oslo, Norway. In painting, drawing and sculpture that revolve around the human form, Frank has captured international attention with her poignant, playful and theatrical narratives, sophisticated use of color, and lush material sensibility. In Tales of the Brothers Grimm, Frank draws special attention to the roles of women in the original form of these fairy tales: these were stories told and collected by women and Frank’s drawings, for the first time, recast these characters as complex Feminist protagonists. Work by the artist is held in numerous public collections, including The Brooklyn Museum of Art; The Whitney Museum of Art; The Rose Art Museum; The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; and the Williams College Museum of Art. Marian Bantjes began working as a book typesetter in Canada in the mid-1980s and later established her own successful firm. She started to develop her inimitable style of typography in 2003. Since then, her work has attracted an international cult following. Much of Marian’s work has been published in books and magazines around the world, including IDEA (Japan), Eye (UK), Wallpaper, Creative Review (UK), Azure (Canada), Communication Arts (USA), Print (USA), DPI (Taiwan), Concept (Indonesia), +81 (Japan), 2+3D (Poland), Form (Germany), D2B (Brazil), Design Indaba (South Africa) and étapes (Paris). toiletpaper 11 maurizio cattelan | pierpaolo ferrari

Toiletpaper is an artists’ magazine created and produced by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, born out of a passion or obsession they both cultivate: images. The magazine contains no text; each picture springs from an idea, often simple, and through a complex orchestration of people it becomes the materialization of the artists’ mental outbursts. Since the first issue, in June 2010, Toiletpaper has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. The result is a publication that is itself a work of art which, through its accessible form as a magazine, and through its wide distribution, challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy. ]

kenzine vol. 3 toiletpaper + kenzo

“For the third installment in our collaboration with TOILETPAPER for our advertising campaigns, we worked with Maurizio, Micol and Pierpaolo to take people on a mysterious journey to an unfamiliar world. A place where the ordinary is slightly disorted, mirrors lead to other dimensions and the strange and beautiful coexist in singular harmony. We love that David Lynch’s (the inspiration for our collections) skewed and somewhat disruptive sense of storytelling seamlessly fits with how the TOILETPAPER approach image making and the final results speak for themselves. Needless to say we’re delighted with the out come and hope everyone else enjoys the images as much as we do.” Carol Lim & Humberto Leon In 2011, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the founders of the Opening Ceremony fashion retail store and private label collection in New York, were appointed Creative Directors of Kenzo. The duo has since revitalized the label with their unique, multifaceted experience from the fashion world and avantgarde aesthetics. Toiletpaper, by artists Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari with the art direction of Micol Talso, is a picture-based magazine that explores surrealistic narratives. shit and die maurizio cattelan | myriam ben salah | marta papini

Shit and Die is an editorial project by Maurizio Cattelan, Myriam Ben Salah and Marta Papini, published as part of the homonymous exhibition in Torino (November 6th 2014 – January 11th 2015). The publication is not a mere comment on the exhibition, it could be seen as an extension of it, a missing room. As the show, it is conceived as the most subjective, obsessive, and irrationally non exhaustive composition. Several local stories, unpublished archival material, exclusive contributions by artists and theorists incorporate into a consistent and unique narration through seven deadly chapters that readers can comprehend as a whole tale. The list of artists on show is composed of established names from the international art scene as well as emerging artists, including among others: Davide Balula, Guy Ben Ner, George Condo, Martin Creed, Stelios Faitakis, Rokni and Ramin Haerizadeh, Petrit Halilaj, Dorothy Iannone, Yan Pei Ming, Aldo Mondino, Carol Rama, Roman Signer, Alexandre Singh, Jim Shaw, Andra Ursuta, Francesco Vezzoli, Jakub Julian Ziolkowski, Carlo Mollino. The list of contributors to the publication comprehends the artists included in the show and artists and theorists specifically invited for the publication. ]

montauk dreaming ben watts

In a career that spanned more than four decades, Montauk Dreaming is an homage to the town that photographer Ben Watts has called home since 1995. Watts has described Montauk as “paradise 3 hours outside the walls of the greatest city in the world”. Watts’ photographic style of bright color and vibrant life is no doubt a product of his surroundings, as we get a wide and candid view into his personal world in Montauk, NY. The town, situated at the eastern most point of New York’s Long island, has exploded in recent years becoming a summer cultural epicenter. Primarily shot on an iPhone with his own photo app and set of filters, Montauk Dreaming serves as an explosive narrative of beach lifestyle and spirt. Ben Watts (born 1967) is an English photographer based in New York, whose work has been published in various international fashion magazines, such as Elle, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Condé Nast Traveller. He first came to New York in 1990, where he started documenting urban youth and was especially fascinated by American Hip Hop culture. He finally moved to New York in 1995. His work was shown in Vibe and Rolling Stone and in advertisements for Nike, Reebok and Gap. ]

opera david leventi

In his series Opera, photographer David Leventi records the interiors of more than 40 opera houses spanning 4 centuries and 4 continents. Shot meticulously over five years Opera presents a typology, each empty hall is seen from the place at center stage where the singers would stand. The large format camera reveals these temples of music in all their wealth of scintillating architectural detail which also serves the acoustic function of enriching sound. This body of work historically documents landmarks which stand as symbols of their nations’ wealth and grandeur, their dedication to the promotion of the arts and to bringing communities together. These halls have resounded with the voices of the greatest performers throughout history and their distinctive architecture has served as the inspiration for composers, writers and artists alike. Perhaps this work even casts a new light on the Renaissance debate of seeing versus hearing as the primary means of perceiving beauty. While the halls and photographs are silent the mind fills with music. In 2007, David Leventi was designated by Photo District News as one of their Top 30 Emerging Photographers. His photographs have been widely published in TIME, The New York Times Magazine, ESPN The Magazine, FT Weekend Magazine, Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Communication Arts Photography Annual and American Photography, among others. He is represented by Rick Wester Fine Art in New York, Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans, Bau-Xi Photo in Toronto, Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta and Galería Patricia Acal in Madrid. Leventi (b. 1978) was born in New York and received his BFA in Photography from Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn. ]

outside the studio greg gorman

Outside the Studio represents Greg Gorman’s tenth monograph and third to be published by Damiani. This book takes Gorman outside the reaches of his studio portrait and figure study work, for which he is well known, and onto the streets of South East Asia-somewhat of unchartered territory for the artist. Traveling initially on behalf of Epson, where he was giving symposiums on fine art digital printing throughout much of Singapore, Malaysia. China and India, gave Gorman a first hand look at these very different cultures. It also came at the very beginning of the digital revolution and the transition from analogue to digital cameras. All of this was very new for someone who had shot film for more than thirty plus years. For Gorman, being in the studio with the likes of a Brando, De Niro or Pacino was second nature to him, but thrusting him in front of strangers in uncontrollable situations was a new adventure! ]

traveling lights xavier guardans

Traveling Lights is the second volume in a series of five books by the photographer Xavier Guardans. Traveling Lights is also an ongoing photographic series with over 200 works in total, all an investigation of minimalism and light in diverse environments. The series began in Egypt and it was developed over ten years in nearly a dozen countries including Kenya, Belize, China, Senegal, Vietnam, Spain, Argentina and the United States among others. Guardans, who lives and works in Brooklyn, lived in Japan for two years in the late 1980’s, and this experience was a turning point for the photographer. It helped him to “turn down the volume” of his past environments, and hone his sensitivity to finding the beauty in simplicity. Since that time, Guardans always took his Rolleiflex and color film with him, ready to respond to his ever changing landscapes. Naturally, light became the constant motif in his travels. He notes that “Photography is painting with light. Everything else comes after that. It’s the light that dominates the whole story”. Using light, the thirty-nine fullcolor images selected for Traveling Lights weave a poetic visual narrative between seemingly disparate environments; stoney mineral deposits found in the glaciers of Patagonia parallel with dried brush found in Minnesota or Kenya, creating complex textures and connections. ]

outer boroughs: new york beyond manhattan william meyers Outer Boroughs: New York beyond Manhattan continues the tradition — actually the several traditions — of photography in New York City. The predecessors of William Meyers worked almost entirely in Manhattan, but he worked in the other four boroughs — Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Most of his pictures were taken on anonymous streets where the people of the place live and go about their business; they represent the quotidian, not the spectacular; they are the outer boroughs of the spirit as well as of the physical city. The work is not concerned with documentation, the way things look, but with “thusness” — the feel of a place at a particular moment. Each image represents a certain time in a certain part of a certain city where, he has found, even in unlikely neighborhoods there are occasions for beauty. The Outer Boroughs project is completed. In 2008, the New York Public Library purchased a portfolio of 86 prints for its permanent collection. Other prints are in the collections of the Museum of the City of New York and the New-York Historical Society. ]

ukraine youth, between days daniel king

The images included in Ukraine Youth, Between Days depict the demonstrations which had started in May in Kiev, when Daniel King photographed a defining moment for the country and its emerging youth. The sudden and almost invisible awakening of adulthood in the adolescents he photographed coincided with a movement of underground rebellion within the city. Weeks were spent documenting the architecture of the city and the remains of the Communist era. He met teenagers in the streets and then encountered them by the lakes or for drinks in the public parks, all the while establishing bonds that would ultimately lead them to share a house. He unveiled the patterns of their daily life together, one which was strangely unaltered by the political events taking place just a couple of blocks away from their gathering places. Through them, he experienced the state of consciousness universal to every teenager - the capacity to transcends the physical, block life’s noise, and dive deep into the emotions of a changing mind and body. The empty buildings, deserted canals, and abandoned children’s playgrounds are real yet they abstractly represent this frame of mind. Through his images of the city, its landscape, and the young adults living in it, Daniel King has gifted us with something powerful that we didn’t see in the news: what it was like to grow up in Ukraine for a generation living its last moments of carelessness. ]

fair witness david lykes keenan

Could there be anything more unique than an alien being’s point of view? Magnum Photos photographer Eli Reed wonders about this. If such a benevolent being mingled among us, invisibly or at least unnoticed, observing the fine points of the human condition, what might it take notice of? In his introduction, Reed suggests that the photographs in FAIR WITNESS could be an approximation of such a being’s vision. The photographs are of sublime moments, some funny, some ironic, some goofy, some unsettling, most so fleeting as to be immediately lost to time if not photographed. These moments that elude the consciousness of most human beings might significantly inform an alien visitor. Of course, our alien is just an exercise in imagination and an unexpected way of framing the rare, refreshing vision found in the photographs of FAIR WITNESS. Not coincidentally, this title was inspired by the 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. The classic black and white photographs in FAIR WITNESS were taken by the earthling David Lykes Keenan between 2004 and 2012. ]

milano buzz alessandro cosmelli | gaia light

Italian-born photographers Alessandro Cosmelli and Gaia Light’s Milano Buzz is the second chapter of the ongoing series The Buzz Project, a temporal and symbolic portrait of the contemporary metropolis and its inhabitants, yet as seen from the window of public transport - in this case the ubiquitous city bus and trolley car. Caught in passing, each image is a chance arrangement of figures that appeared for a brief moment in front of the camera before the bus moved on, gleaning people’s hidden or transitory states of being and extracting timeless moments from the swirling tides of the contemporary city. parallel views: italian and japanese art from the 1950s, 60s and 70s

In the decades following World War II, both Japan and Italy were rebuilding after the ravages of war, constructing democratic political systems after a period of fascism, and transforming into economic powerhouses, all of which profoundly influenced their respective cultures. Artists in both nations were working in these similar conditions, examining their formidable artistic traditions and seeking a new path forward in the wake of modernism—ways of making art objects that had never been made before. Parallel Views presents a breadth of postwar masters of Italian and Japanese art. The 153 artworks reproduced here include works by the Italian proto-Arte Povera and Arte Povera artists Alighiero Boetti, Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Mimmo Rotella. Central figures in the Gutai movement—Matsutani Takesada, Saburo Murakami, Shimamoto Shozo, Shiraga Kazuo—are represented, as are important Mono-ha artists, including Lee Ufan, Sekine Nobuo, Suga Kishio, and Takematsu Jiro, among others. At this time the art world was becoming increasingly fragmented and global, and teasing out the historical connections is complex. This volume gives readers a unique opportunity to view works that have rarely been shown or considered together but in fact share common themes and concerns. As essayist Joshua Mack states, “Modernism was not a process extending a dominant model from Paris or New York to outlying countries, like Japan or Italy, but rather a process of exchange between interlinked nodes. Its dynamic is a process of creative interpretation in which concepts originating in one context were understood differently in another.” A panel discussion among three leading scholars of this period in Italian and Japanese art further examines the connections and simultaneities between the art and artists of this period. Parallel Views invites readers to explore a body of artworks that have been overlooked until recently but warrant renewed attention. ]

imagining new worlds wifredo lam | josé parlá | fahamou pecou

Featuring the work of Brooklyn-based artist José Parlá and Atlanta-based artist Fahamu Pecou, Imagining New Worlds considers the legacy and influence of Wifredo Lam, a preeminent artist of Latin American descent and one of the Surrealist movement’s most influential figures. Representing a new generation engaged in a global discourse on art and culture, identity and alterity, José Parlá and Fahamu Pecou will consider Lam’s legacy through their own personal and often poetic reflections on Lam’s involvement with Surrealism and poetry, his fusion of African-inspired imagery with that of the natural world, and the influence of the Santeria religion of the Caribbean and the Négritude movement on Lam’s art. The dual exhibitions, curated by High Museum curator Michael Rooks, are presented concurrently with a retrospective of the work of Wifredo Lam, and are the first major museum presentations of work by Parlá and Pecou. José Parlá (born 1973) has received critical acclaim for his works, which lie at the boundary between abstraction and calligraphy. Composed from layers of paint, gestural drawing and found ephemera, his work evokes the histories of urban environments. Parlá is a documentarian of city life. Recently, In Medias Res, Parlá’s second solo exhibition with Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York City opened in Chelsea. In 2012, the 11th Havana biennial selected The Wrinkles of the City: Havana, Cuba project, which was completed in the same year for a vertically integrated collaboration between Parlá and French artist JR, and exhibited in 2013 at Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York City. Parlá and JR co-directed a documentary by the same title that was awarded the Grand Prize for Documentary Short and Best U.S. Premiere Documentary Short in 2013 at The Heartland Film Festival, Indianapolis, IN. In 2014, Parlá is honored to have been commissioned for a 90-foot-long mural painting for the entrance of One World Trade Center, which he has entitled: ONE: Union of the Senses. contemporary art

Pecou’s work interrogates the materialism and machismo of hip-hop culture through painted self-portraits in the guise of a hip-hop star—a persona Pecou invented in order to embody the object of his critique. At the same time, Pecou’s work celebrates the poetic nature of hip-hop’s language, both verbal and physical, as well as its powerful and empowering contribution to an increasingly hybrid global culture. ]

fire and ice: timescapes joan myers

Joan Myers has long been fascinated with landscapes crafted from fire and ice. Gathered here are her photographs of iconic sites from all over the world, including Volcano National Park on the island of Hawai'i, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, Cotopaxi and Picincha in Ecuador, Laki in Iceland, Mt. Erebus in Antarctica, Krakatoa in Indonesia, and of course, Mt. Etna and Pompeii, among others. The work is breathtakingly beautiful, compelling, and provocative by turns. Her essay reads like an adventure story, exploring the connection between fire and ice while describing her thrilling treks to the ends of the Earth. Joan Myers has been taking photographs for more than thirty years, exploring the relationships between people and the land. Her highly acclaimed work has been the focus of three Smithsonian exhibitions, more than fifty solo and eighty group shows, and seven books. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Amon Carter Museum, Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris, Center for Creative Photography, Denver Art Museum, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, High Museum of Art, Minneapolis Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Museum of Modern Art, Nevada Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others. For his series Lakes and Reservoirs, Brandt photographs lakes and reservoirs in the western United States, and then submerges each resulting C-Print in water collected from the subject of the photograph. Prints are soaked for days or weeks or even months, and this process impacts the layers of color that comprise the image. Tom Bianchi was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 1970. He became a corporate attorney, eventually working with Columbia Pictures in New York, painting and drawing on weekends. His artwork came to the attention of Betty Parsons and Carol Dreyfuss and they gave him his first one-man painting show in 1980. In 1984, he was given his first solo museum exhibition at the Spoleto Festival. After Bianchi’s partner died of AIDS in 1988, he turned his focus to photography, producing Out of the Studio, a candid portrayal of gay intimacy. Its success led to producing numerous monographs, including On the Couch, Deep Sex and In Defense of Beauty. In 1993 Tom co-founded CytoDyn, a biotech company with the mission of developing new H.I.V./AIDS therapies. Tom was the Director of the company responsible for funding the research through 2000.

Growing up in the 1950s, Tom Bianchi would head into downtown Chicago and pick up 25-cent “physique” magazines at newsstands. In one such magazine, he found a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. “Fire Island sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer,” he recalls in the preface to his latest monograph. “I had no idea it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was a place I would one day call home.” In 1970, fresh out of law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered a community of gay men. Using an SX-70 Polaroid camera, Bianchi documented his friends’ lives in the Pines, amassing an image archive of people, parties and private moments. These images, published here for the first time, and accompanied by Bianchi’s moving memoir of the era, record the birth and development of a new culture. Soaked in sun, sex, camaraderie and reverie, Fire Island Pines conjures a magical bygone era.

These photographs are at once formal and intimate for they bring both rigor and tenderness to glimpses of real people. Edmund White

Since the first issue, in June 2010, Toilet Paper has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. The result is a publication that is itself a work of art which, through its accessible form as a magazine, and through its wide distribution, challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy. Maurizio Cattelan has exhibited internationally in leading international institutions and has participated numerous times in the Venice Biennale. He curated the 4th Berlin Biennale together with Massimiliano Gioni and Ali Subotnick. In the meantime, he managed to promote No soul for sale - A Festival of Independents that took place in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern in 2010 along with giving birth to art magazines such as Permanent Food and Charley. Since retiring from art, after the acclaimed retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, he totally committed himself to the new publishing project, Toiletpaper magazine. Pierpaolo Ferrari is a fashion and advertising photographer and creative researcher. In 2007 he began a productive contribution with L’Uomo Vogue that offered him the chance to explore the portrait’s potential and radically change its codes. In 2009, the metamorphosis is completed thanks to sharing his new publishing obsession with Maurizio Cattelan: Toiletpaper magazine. When he’s not shooting, he can be found surfing in Costa Rica. ]

Cy Twombly Paradise includes works on paper, paintings, and sculpture that span Twombly’s career, from early works of the 1950s to the Camino Real series of paintings that he completed shortly before his death in 2011. The book includes 57 works of art, along with double-page, full-bleed detail photographs that capture Twombly’s dramatic gestural style and lush palette. Curator and author Philip Larratt-Smith contextualizes Twombly's work in his essay Psychedelic Antiquity: “For Twombly, the myths of antiquity are dreams and mirrors. Mythical characters are archetypes, and the sequence of events follows an oneiric logic that is intuitively convincing even when irreducible to reason. Twombly finds his own passions reflected in the external patterns of myth; the mirroring effect between aesthetic experience and psychic response is profound and generative. His works are never literary depictions of a myth, though myth may suggestively open the work up to narrative. Myth permits emotional expressivity without disclosing biographical origins and, conversely, provides an objective correlative to the realm of sexuality and fantasy.” ] ============= Cy Twombly Paradise 25 x 34,5 cm 9,75 x 13,5 inches Pgs. 172 ill. 90 Clothbound with jacket English Release date Fall 2014 Rights world Usd 60.00 Gbp 39.00 Eur 45.00 ISBN > 978-88-6208-376-8

the wrinkles of the city: havana cuba jr & josé parlá

the portrait machine project carlo van de roer In The Portrait Machine Project, Brooklyn-based New Zealand photographer Carlo Van de Roer (born 1975) explores the idea that a camera can reveal otherwise hidden facets of a subject’s character, and their relationship with the photographer and viewer. Van de Roer uses a Polaroid aura camera, developed in the 1970s in an attempt to record what a psychic might see. His subjects--friends, family, artists Miranda July, Terence Koh and Aurel Schmidt, author James Frey--are connected by sensors to the camera, which translates biofeedback into information about their characters and how they are viewed. The camera depicts this information as color in the Polaroid and as a printed description and diagram. In this, his first book, Van de Roer prompts us to question what we expect from a portrait, particularly when it’s of someone we think we know. ]

In May 2012, JR collaborates with American artist José Parlá on the latest iteration of The Wrinkles of the City: a huge mural installation in Havana, undertaken for the Havana Biennale, for which JR and Parlá photographed and recorded 25 senior citizens who had lived through the Cuban revolution, creating portraits which Parlá, who is of Cuban descent, interlaced with palimpsestic calligraphic writings and paintings. Parlá’s markings echo the distressed surfaces of the walls he inscribes, and offer commentary on the lives of Cuba’s elders; together, JR and Parlá’s murals marvelously animate a city whose walls are otherwise adorned only by images of its leaders. ]

the art and life of chaz bojorquez chaz bojorquez ============= The art and life of Chaz Bojorquez [ Urban art 24 x 28 cm. 9.5 x 13 inches Pgs. 160 ill. 140 Hardback English Rights world Usd 50.00 Gbp 30.00 Eur 39.00 ISBN > 978-88-6208-121-4

The book is the first monograph on Chaz Bojorquez, best known as "Chaz", the Los Angeles artist who traced his own style following the Cholo Graffiti tradition. During the late 60's he started drawing and writing in the street of Los Angeles creating one of the first example of evolved graffiti/ street-art in the US, some years before they started to invade the New York City streets. From the 70's he has developed a world unique style of illustration and calligraphy has marked a generation of visual artists, calligraphers and tattoists. A book which goes through his life and work presenting unrealesed photos and artworks." By the end of 1969, Bojorquez had created a symbol that represented him and the streets-a stylized skull called Se単or Suerte (Mr. Luck). It has become a gangster image of protection from death. Bojorquez quit what he calls "tagging" in 1986. Three of his paintings are now in the permanent collection of the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. Four others are owned by the Orange County Museum of Art. Bojorquez is considered one of the few artists who have successfully made the transition from the street to the gallery. ]

captain rugged keziah jones | native maqari Captain Rugged is a multimedia project collaboration between 2 Nigerian artists: Keziah Jones and Native Maqari. The book is a graphic novel and will come out with a special music card that will contain the url to download the tracks of Keziah Jones’ CD album of the same name. The two artists have witnessed the most transformative stories happening within and around them in the city of Lagos so it was inevitable that they both attempted to put this into words and image and sound for an outside audience in order that they might also get an idea of the character of the city. After the oil boom years of the ‘70’s, visually, Lagos resembled what can only be described as an unfinished African utopia; grand projects lay abandoned and subsequently taken over by the homeless, grand motorways that span the lagoons surrounding the islands of Lagos overrun by hastily constructed shanty towns on stilts. The city became both futuristic and of the past at the same time. Captain Rugged is set amongst the teeming masses that live in these in-between places. The only protagonist that Keziah and Native could conceive of who was surviving on his own terms in this type of environment was a superhero. This is due to the fact of the unending harshness of the daily grind of the inhabitants. But daily grind can also be experienced as transcendence, because at the end of every day Lagosians will sit down and ease away their troubles by recounting, to whomever will listen, the numerous surprising and amazing things they have seen over a beer and some music. For both artists the city of Lagos will never cease to amaze, therefore it was not surprising that a superhero called Captain Rugged would appear, because if they didn’t invent him someone else would have. ]

In a meteoric rise to fame, the Los Angeles–based Haas Brothers have garnered international accolades for their set design and props for print and video, one-of-a-kind fashion works and their highly original furniture and object designs. Their exploration and mastery of materials—ranging from brass, bronze, porcelain and fur to highly technical resins and polyurethane—matched with their insatiable curiosity and remarkable visual intelligence, sets them apart as designers. This monograph—the first on the brothers— focuses on their projects, including their Hex series of handworked bronze tile pieces, their Accretion series of unique ceramic vessels, the Beast series of bronze and wool anthropomorphic furniture and a new body of works that engages ideas about arousal and eroticism in playful, sculptural forms. The book features color photographs as well as writings and drawings by Simon and Nikolai Haas that convey their humor and eloquence while illuminating the inspirations, theories and processes behind the works, plus images of the Haas Brothers’ studio and practice. ]

Fire Island Pines Polaroids 1975-1983 Collectors limited edition of 67 numbered copies comes in a special orange cloth slipcase with a tipped-in cover image, and contains a fine art giclée print signed and numbered by Tom Bianchi. Growing up in the 1950s, Tom Bianchi would head into downtown Chicago and pick up 25-cent “physique” magazines at newsstands. In one such magazine, he found a photograph of bodybuilder Glenn Bishop on Fire Island. “Fire Island sounded exotic, perhaps a name made up by the photographer,” he recalls in the preface. “I had no idea it was a real place. Certainly, I had no idea then that it was 86 [ backlist

a place I would one day call home.” In 1970, fresh out of law school, Bianchi began traveling to New York, and was invited to spend a weekend at Fire Island Pines, where he encountered a community of gay men.

Bart Michiels shows seemingly innocuous landscapes some romantic and beautiful, others somber and desolate - that are in fact the sites of the most barbarous battles in European history.

Photographer Alexandra Carr met Paz de la Huerta-the actress and Boardwalk Empire star--in New York in 2007, shortly before Paz became the celebrity she is today, and they soon agreed to collaborate on a photo project. They began shooting in the fall of 2008, often using Paz’s small West Village apartment as a back-

drop--which was mercifully well heated throughout that especially cold New York winter. A gorgeous, linen-bound volume, The Birds Didn’t Die over the Winter explores themes of love, loneliness and the difficult transition from youth into relative maturity.

Gabe had just wrapped up his lead role in Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park, in which he had played a teenage skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard. Gabe had never acted prior to starring in the film; he had heard about Van Sant’s casting call from a skateboard store and initially auditioned as an extra. Meeting the teenager, Haymes recalls: “Initially, Gabe was fairly shy, but it

quickly transpired that he had seen some of my skateboarding images online and an instant friendship was struck. When the assignment was over, I approached Gabe about the possibility of working on more photographs as there was something entirely captivating about him and his energy.” Published in an edition of 30 copies, this limited edition includes a numbered and signed photograph by Nick Haymes and original excerpts from Gabe’s notebooks.
