Many rosettes can be crafted using minimal tools and materials depending on the complexity and style of the project. With the included decorative papers, you’ll be off to a great start, creating beautiful rosettes in no time. What’s more, you may be able to substitute some tools for things you already have on hand, such as the top of a small crochet hook for the round tip stylus or the tip of a bone folder for scoring fold lines into your paper. And because crafting rosettes can take materials such as paper, textiles, and trinkets to new dimensions, it’s fun to experiment with items you might otherwise discard.

papers with large patterns. Vintage papers that are thinner and more brittle can be reinforced by backing them with a sheet of letter-size sticky label stock before manipulating them into folds. Several kinds of patterned papers are included in this portfolio to get you started.

Various weights of plain cardstock are used for making gluing rounds, backing rounds, and backing pieces for rosette tiers.

Your favorite small-pattern or solid-color fabrics can be pressed with an iron into long strips, folded and ruffled or pleated, and manipulated into rosette tiers. You can use ribbons and trims of all shapes, textures, patterns, widths, and lengths for your rosettes.

Even the smallest length of decorative ribbon or trim can be used to embellish your rosettes.

Printable cotton sheets are letter-size fabric pieces with a paper backing that can be run through a desktop printer. These are perfect for printing an image, like a photo, onto fabric or for printing a design, like the monogram and floral one used in the Embroidered Monogram (page 25).

Whether as repeat object tiers or as centerpieces, these accessories add a unique touch to your rosettes. Custom decorative objects can be crafted by using a shape punch to cut out graphics on greeting cards or other cardstock items, while small round picture frames are excellent for silhouette and photo rosette centerpieces. that make 2- to 3-in-/5- to 7.5-cm-diameter circles can take the place of a circle cutter.

Decorative shape punches can be used for crafting multiple petal-like embellishments for rosette tiers. Small, round decorative paper punches create excellent centerpiece finishes to many accordion-fold paper rosettes. A standard hole punch can be used to create holes for hanging or tying rosettes from string or hooks.

Whether crafting wire hanging loops or manipulating dollar bills into rosettes using wire, a pair of wire cutters is essential to avoid damaging the blades of a good pair of scissors.

CUTTI NG TOOLS A sharp craft knife is excellent for trimming paper along a metal ruler, and is also a perfect tool for picking up tiny embellishments for gluing. A dull craft knife is useful for carefully taking apart existing button badges that you want to use as new rosette centerpieces.

Either a guillotine paper cutter or a rotary paper trimmer with a sliding blade makes precision cutting of paper fast and easy. Both are marked with measuring increments that can be very useful for many rosette projects.

A crafter needs both a dedicated pair of sharp scissors and pinking shears for fabric and a separate pair of sharp scissors and pinking shears for paper. Using the same scissors and shears for both fabric and paper will dull the blades.

A precision circle cutter effortlessly cuts out measured rounds of paper and cardstock, referred to as gluing rounds, used in many of the projects in this book, to which you attach ribbons and paper elements that make up the rosette tiers.

You can use decorative paper punches, specialty scissors, and decorative rotary cutters to create a decorative edge on the rosette paper elements. A paper punch that makes 1-in-/2.5-cm-diameter circles is perfect for creating small rosette centerpieces and repeat objects, and punches

FOLDI NG TOOLS Scoring your paper for folding, like some of the scored patterned papers in this kit, is essential for a successful rosette. A scoring board has a surface with grooves for debossing equally spaced straight fold lines into your paper as a guide for precise accordion folding. You can create a similar effect by lightly marking equal increments along both edges of your paper with a pencil, placing the strip onto a semisoft surface (a sheet of craft foam works well), and, using a straightedge ruler and bone folder or round-tip stylus, carefully debossing your fold lines. Using a scoring board, however, will cut construction time and effort considerably, which is golden when crafting multiple rosettes.

A bone folder is a wonderful tool used to score paper, create sharp folds, and burnish surfaces. Resembling a tongue depressor with one pointed end, it is traditionally made

The rosettes in this booklet are constructed from tiers of paper, ribbon, or other mat­erials used as repeated objects that graduate in size and are topped with a centerpiece. When creating tiered rosettes, vary the size of each tier, designing the largest tier for the bottom and making subsequent tiers gradually smaller so that they reveal the edge and some of the tier below. Following are the basic techniques you will use for crafting your own rosettes; refer back to these instructions as you work on the projects.

1. Cut a gluing round [Fig. 4] smaller than your desired finished tier diameter. The gluing round only needs to be large enough for attaching paper elements and ribbons for creating individual rosette tiers. It should be hidden beneath any tier above it, with only the decorative elements showing.

Gluing rounds are used as platforms for layering many rosettes. Accordion-folded paper rings and other rosette materials are glued to the rounds to hold their form. You can create a gluing round by tracing the rim of a drinking glass onto cardstock and cutting it out. Gluing rounds can also be purchased as precut chipboard circles from a craft store. Inexpensive chipboard drink coasters, available in home supply stores, make excellent base-layer gluing rounds for large rosettes. Small circle-shape punches are useful for cutting out gluing rounds for the smallest of rosettes, such as those crafted for the Rosette Mobile (page 27).

Backing rounds are crafted the same as gluing rounds and used to nicely finish off the back side of a rosette.

2. Using the decorative papers in this kit, scrapbook paper, or other paper, cut a long, narrow paper strip three to four times as long and half the width of the desired diameter of your rosette tier. Add a bit of additional width to your strip if you are planning to cut a decorative edge. For larger rosettes, it may be necessary to cut two lengths of paper and glue them end-to-end with a slight overlap.

If using unscored paper, score across the strip from top to bottom in equal increments.

3. Fold the scored paper strip back and forth on the scored lines, forming alternating peaks and valleys [Fig. 5].

MAKI NG AN ACCORDIONFOLDED PAP ER ROSETTE TI ER The accordion-folded paper rosette tier is essential in rosette art. Here’s how to make one.

4. Holding multiple sections of folded panels together, press along the folds tightly, firmly creasing well several panels at once.

Continue with all folds.

5. With the paper’s printed pattern to the outside, glue one end of the folded strip to the other end, attaching a valley to a peak (trimming away a scored section if necessary to match the folds) and creating an accordionfolded ring.

6. Press the top of the ring down and inward onto the center of a gluing round [Fig. 6].

Place hot glue into the small center opening, and attach the paper rosette to the gluing round. Hold the paper rosette in place until the glue cools.

7. Use hot glue on the center area to attach another tier or centerpiece on top of your accordion-folded paper tier.

TIP: Once your rosette is complete, remove any unsightly hot glue threads with a small piece of transparent tape brushed lightly along the surface(s).

USI NG A CI RCLE FORM TO CREATE LARG E PAP ER ROSETTES For creating larger rosettes, craft a custom circle form (see page 4) with the desired diameter of your rosette tier. The use of a circle form has the added bonus of saving on decorative paper by creating the illusion of long, wide lengths of paper and ribbon fanning out from the center, when in reality the materials being used are manipulated to appear that way because shortened sections are hidden by a subsequent tier or large centerpiece.

Place a gluing round in the center of the form. As in step 6 above, press the center of the accordion-folded paper ring down,

Fig. 6 allowing the outer edge of the ring to spread out to meet the form. Hot glue the center folds of the ring to the gluing round and hold firmly until cooled. Because this technique leaves a recessed center area with the gluing round exposed, risers or spacers can be placed in the center area to make the surfaces of this tier flush.

adding a 1⁄2-in/12-mm outer trim line around the image and extending its background.

Print onto lightweight paper. Using a dull craft knife to wedge between the front and back sections of the old button badge, take apart the button badge and remove the existing paper from the front piece [Fig. 11].

TIP: If you’d like to use decorative scissors, an edge punch, or a rotary cutter along the outer edge of the paper strips, do so after scoring and before folding to avoid damaging your edge. If scoring your paper strip is based on the edge scalloping, cut or punch prior to scoring, being careful to avoid tearing finely cut details.

You can easily make richly ruffled rosette tiers using fabric, ribbon, and crepe paper. When you have sewn along the entire length of the material, carefully pull on the beginning and end thread sections, cinching the material to gather it into ruffles, until the piece measures the desired diameter for your rosette. Fold the ribbon or fabric ends to the back, and sew or glue them together. Tie a knot with the thread ends. Glue the gathered ruffled circle to a gluing round.

Petal rosette tiers can be made by gluing multiple cut- or punched-paper shapes or ribbon sections along the edge of a gluing round or by folding paper strips or ribbon into loops and gluing them together where the ends meet. Ribbon petals can be further puckered by folding over and gluing a section of the cut and glued ends of the petal [Fig. 8].

ATTACH I NG REP EAT OBJ ECTS Smaller, similar, or identical items added to the edges of rosette tiers create unique effects (see the Birthday Centerpiece, page 19).

When making tiers with repeat objects, glue only as much of each object as necessary to attach it to the edge of the round so the object will show beyond the gluing round [Fig. 10].

The area that is glued can be hidden by a tier above it.

Fig. 11 Re-cover the front section of the button badge with the printed and trimmed-out graphic, which you have coated on the back side with dry adhesive from a sticker machine or coated lightly with liquid paper craft glue.

Smoothly fold the edges over the badge front plate and tuck under to the back side [Fig 12].

Replacing the badge backing plate is not necessary. Use a clear topcoat of Mod Podge or spray acrylic to give your new button badge a finished look. Attach the new button badge piece to your rosette as the centerpiece by using risers and hot glue.

TIP: With striped material or paper, consider the direction of the pattern before cutting and manipulating it into rounds.

Short-cut stripes create a starburst effect, long-cut stripes a bull’s-eye effect, and diagonal stripes create a spiral effect [Fig. 7].

Craft a vintage kitchen rosette in cottage style with food and kitchen-related ephemera to decorate your sweet home bakery. For my rosette, I used aged decorative shelf edge paper, a milk-bottle cap, and coordinating trims and ribbon to evoke a nostalgic effect.

Craft multiple rosettes in various kitchen themes and individually frame each in shadow boxes for larger wall décor.

5. Finish the tiered rosette by hot gluing the milk-bottle cap to the top tier as a centerpiece.

6. Hot glue a backing round to the finished rosette and add a hanging loop to the center top edge of the back to complete.

TIP: Create decorative rosettes for other rooms in your home. For the bathroom, for instance, feature vintage toiletry and apothecary labels and a tiny compact or tin as a centerpiece.

1. Make a bottom tier rosette of trimmed shelf edge paper. Accordion fold (see page 8) the shelf edge paper in 1⁄2-in/12-mm increments, with a final tier diameter of approximately 6 in/15 cm in diameter. If necessary, use a circle form (see page 4) to create this tier.

Decorative garlands make every day festive when strung up around the home, and are spectacular for special events. Make your rosettes classic and elegant, or eclectic and whimsical by mixing up paper colors and patterns.

YOU WILL NEED:

1. Craft multiple two- and three-tier accordionfolded paper rosettes in various sizes and fold dimensions to make up the length of your desired garland. Use a circle form (see page 4) for the larger rosettes. Finish each by gluing a round shape punched from coordinating paper to the center.

4. Turn all the rosettes over, and beginning at one end of the lined-up rosettes, thread the string through the holes of the backing pieces, looping the string once through each hole as you go and adjusting the space between each rosette. Once all the rosettes are threaded and in the desired position, tie off each end of the string to the last hole on each end of the garland. You can also tie the rosettes together one by one.

2. Cut circle backing pieces from cardstock for each finished rosette slightly smaller in diameter than the rosette. Using a standard hole punch, make two holes 1⁄4 in/6 mm from the edge of the backing piece on opposite sides of the center line. Set the holes with metal eyelets. Glue the backing pieces to the backs of the rosettes.

2. Create a secondary tier of fabric, ribbon, or trim petals (see page 10).

3. Craft a third rosette tier approximately 3 in/7.5 cm in diameter with additional shelf edge paper folded in 1⁄4-in/6-mm increments.

3. Arrange the rosettes side by side in a pleasing order. Cut a piece of string one and a half times the length of your combined rosettes. Allow for extra string at the beginning and end of your garland for suspending the piece on a wall or from fixtures.

4. Assemble the tiers with glue. Use risers/ spacers between tiers where possible for added dimension, and add tailpieces—made of ribbon, trim, and paper, see page 12— between the bottom tier and the second tier.

5. Hang up your garland near or at the string ends to create a pretty swag.

TIP: Print out alphabet letters on cardstock and punch out as your rosette centerpieces to spell a name or message.

Craft a beautiful wreath made of colorful paper rosettes with button centerpieces as a spectacular custom element for your home. Hang it above a bedroom headboard, over a buffet, on a family room wall, or on a sheltered front door. You can also use a store-bought cardboard wreath form, rather than making your own.

1. Use a compass drawing tool to draw a 12-in/30.5-cm-diameter circle on the corrugated cardboard. Using a craft knife, cut out the circle. Within the cut-out circle, draw and cut out an inner 9-in-/23-cm-diameter circle, making an overall 1 1â „2-in-/4-cm-wide cardboard ring.

Add sparkle and shine to any Christmas tree or holiday arrangement with these rosette ornaments. Crafted from vintage foil tree-light reflectors, they are as much fun to make as they are to use for adorning your tree. These rosettes also make spectacular holiday gift toppers! Embellish ornament tiers with sparkly holiday trims such as tinsel and glass bead garland.

2. Construct nine 5-in-/12-cm-diameter singletier accordion-folded base paper rosettes and twenty to twenty-five additional accent single-tier rosettes in various smaller sizes.

With needle and thread, sew thread a few times through the buttonholes, cut thread to back, and secure. Hot glue a threaded button to the center of each rosette.

3. Arrange the nine base rosettes on the cardboard ring in a symmetrical arrangement and hot glue into place. Arrange the accent rosettes atop the base rosettes in a pleasing and symmetrical composition, and then one at a time, hot glue into place.

1. Decide how many ornaments you want to make. Make the ornament backing rounds, one for each. Cut or punch a 3-in/7.5-cm circle of cardstock for each ornament. With the hole punch, make one hole in each backing round 1â „4 in/6 mm from the outer edge.

Set the holes with metal eyelets.

4. Hot glue a hanging loop to the top back center of the cardboard form and hang to display.

4. To make one ornament, assemble three to four tiers, graduating from large to small, of paper, trims, and one light reflector. Hot glue the tiers together. Repeat process for making the remaining ornaments.

2. Using the accordion-fold paper rosette technique (see page 8), make several rosette tiers using decorative paper, giftwrap, and foil paper in various sizes, both smaller and larger than your light reflectors. Create enough tiers for several ornaments.

5. Using a 1-in/2.5-cm decorative punch, cut a centerpiece from a vintage Christmas card to finish each ornament.

6. Attach a backing round to each rosette ornament (see page 8) and loop a wire hanger, ribbon, or knotted string through the eyelet to hang.

N Birthday Centerpiece

Everyone is best of show at their own birthday celebration. Utilizing several rosette tier techniques (see pages 8 to 12), make a spectacular centerpiece to honor someone special with layers of mementos, papers, and objects of significance. Add a skewer to the backing piece to stake the rosette onto their cake, pin-back hardware to allow the birthday guest to wear their rosette, or a hanging loop to turn the rosette into party décor.

YOU WILL NEED:

1. To create the rosette centerpiece, repurpose a button badge (see page 11) using a photograph of the birthday celebrant printed on standard copy paper.

2. Cut twenty to twenty-four 1-in/2.5-cm lengths of the 3⁄8-in-/1-cm-wide decorative ribbon. Fold the ribbon pieces gently in half and hot glue into individual petal loops (see page 10). Hot glue the ribbon petals evenly to the back edge of the button badge. With the remaining decorative ribbon, cut two ribbon tails (see page 12) and attach them to the bottom back edge of the button badge.

3. Craft one 7-in/17-cm rosette from decorative paper using techniques described on page 8, and using a circle form if necessary for large rosette tiers (see page 9).

4. Hot glue the birthday candles evenly around the edge of one heavy gluing round.

5. Hot glue the bottom edges of the bingo game pieces evenly around the other heavy gluing round.

TIP: Make smaller, two-tier birthday rosettes to use as cupcake toppers! Print smaller photos to cardstock and cut out using a round craft punch. Attach lollipop sticks or bamboo skewers to the backs of the rosettes, covering with a small backing round. Stick one in the top of each cupcake.

6. Assemble and hot glue the four rosette tiers together as shown in the photograph.
