Nobia Concept & Design Team
Background
When we embarked on developing our new anniversary concept for Marbodal, we took inspiration from the current design, lifestyle and macro trends, described in this chapter.
In addition to exploring current trends we made a deep dive in the Marbodal achieves and studied historical design styles that have shaped kitchen design since Marbodals founding years. We looked for design highlights that could inspire kitchen design for the next generation but with a strong historical context.
Marbodals founding years brought along big changes in Swedish culture and living standard, it was at time with a positive outlook on the future and interest in new technology. This era, the 1920:s is our inspiration for creating a harmonious and calm new kitchen concept.
Macro & Lifestyle Trends
The following macro and lifestyle trends were considered when we started the design work. They are some of the most relevant macro & lifestyle trends in relation to home interiors right now, helping us to set the design direction for the Anniversary kitchen.
Sustainable Wellness
Housing & interior design for body and mind Aesthetics, wellness as well as considered use of materials. Using soft colors, natural and sustainable materials.
Hybrid Home
Our homes become a space for multiple activities. We spend more time at home but with a need for new functionalities, taking inspiration from restaurants, cafes and hotels and offices
Designed to Last
An increased interest in long-lasting and quality items. Products with timeless design produced with genuine knowledge and craftmanship methods and materials.
Home Cooking
An increased interest of home cooking and creating re- saturant experiences at home. The kitchen is the stage for the creative process of cooking as well as the scenery where you enjoy the meal.
Design Trends
When creating the anniversary concept our ambition was to incorporate following design trends.
Design for impact
Colors and elements with more daring and bold expression, large objects with visual impact and a thought trough holistic design, with maximal impact.
Minimalist
Timeless, simplicity calls for minimalism with a twist
A stripped-down design based on authentic materials and inspiration from the past.
Reimagine the past
Finding long-term and thought-out solutions, use historical references and authentic knowledge for future development in colors, material and design. Creating updated long- lasting timeless versions with a link from the past.
Black Details
This trend provides a contrasting but soft and calming aesthetics. Dark metal elements with textured surfaces and imperfect form creates a genuine craftmanship feel to the kitchen.
Natural Colours
Surfaces with textures and natureinspired color palettes evoke a relaxed and comforting mood in the home. Tones inspired by natural pigments, softer nuanced version with warmth from yellow or red.
Design Elements
Inspired by Nordic 1920: s characteristic color schemes with strong tones of red and yellow ochre. We worked with timeless warm materials and colors. Combining our new neutral light nude with warm natural oak to create a calming and comforting atmosphere.
Limestone from the local Kinnekulle stone quarry embodies the characteristic natural warmth and elegance we wanted to achieve. This beautiful stone is a main inspiration for the color, stone choices and atmosphere.
Sculptural Form
Refined and minimalistic decor is a key element in the concept, a subtle and balanced step between heights and indentation on worktops creates a modern minimalistic take on the 1920 ́s portal elements and architectural decoration. The design elements we developed, a elaborated worktop wrap around/bridge solution, decorative corniche on cabinets and the more dramatic apron front sink add a subtle 1920:s character.
The black knob, a unique modern interpretation of 1920 ́s sculptures and cast iron objects, with an organic teardrop shape and a soft tactile surface the knob stands in contrast to the linear and geometric elements.
Freestanding furniture and classic vitrine units with wooden doors, adds warmth and craftmanship detailing to the kitchen. The fluted glass doors adds a semitransparent layer and is an eye catching design element with great potential for sideboard solution.
The concept layout principles are based on the idea of creating a contemporary interpretation on the neo classical architecture and design style called Swedish Grace, elegant and refined yet delightfully simple.
The Concept
1924 is our anniversary kitchen concept, with elegant and refined decors and materials, Inspired by 1920s aesthetics and architecture in a design relevant for how we live today.

It is a support and aims to illustrate the concept in an optimal way in keeping intention and story intact.
This guide does not replace the fitting manual and should be used as a complement. In this chapter, we present several
kitchen layouts with inspiration for positioning and combinations of knob and handles and the vitrine and shaker frontals. We illustrate the two versions of the worktop and our backsplash solution with integrated shelf and the new apron front sink.
For more information regarding measurements, please look at the appendix.

Kitchen Layout
Kitchen with wallcabinets and island
This kitchens open and welcoming design invites to socializing while also considering the ergonomic use of the kitchen. This layout is built on the classic kitchen triangle for efficient use, adding wall cabinets with vitrine doors for storage of crockery and glassware. The freestanding pantry unit caters for storage of kitchen utensils as well as built in appliances.
(1) In this kitchen we combine two worktop styles, both with the decorative edge. On the island we create portal elements with the wraparound, and on the long base unit we work with the decorative details on front and side edges, creating a horizontal linear decor element.
A(A) When combining backsplash shelf and wall cabinets we recommend linear alignment with the bottom of cabinets and bottom of the shelf.
Kitchen Layout
Kitchen with symmetrical framing
This linear kitchen has a characteristics design, the tall worktop standing vitrine units create framing and symmetrical balance and the worktop and splash back become a beautiful backdrop for all kitchen activities. The freestanding larder unit becomes an impressive and distinct furniture creating balanced dynamic in the overall kitchen layout.
(1) The vitrine unit created by combining two cabinets on top each other match the overall height on the kitchen and creates a consistent horizontal top line. Working with two drawers split in the base unit creates a symmetrical and unison look.
(A) The larder unit has floor-standing end panels and the top is crowned with the decorative niche, to keep the balanced and symmetrical design the oven is placed in the center cabinet. The height of the larder units aligns with the height on the vitrine units.
Kitchen Layout
Straight Kitchen
This linear design creates an effective and compact layout, where the design elements create distinct units and functions. The space between the beautiful wall unit and pantry creates balance and symmetry, the backsplash with decorative shelf becomes the backdrop and functions as a connecter detail.
(1) The wall unit uses the shaker frontals in oak with the new fluted glass vitrine, for a calmer and “closed” look the standard shaker door in oak can be used. The wall unit is centered over the apron front sink and tap, this create symmetrical balance.
(A) For a three-drawer split we are combining the anniversary knob with the handle this creates an interesting and more dynamic less traditional combination. This combination can also be used to ease opening and closing of drawers and heavy frontals.
Kitchen Layout
Kitchen with Island and vitrineunit
This kitchen layout is a variation of the inviting kitchen with island, in this layout we work with freestanding objects, the tall one glass vitrine unit becomes a distinct highlight.
(1) The height of the tall worktop standing vitrine unit aligns with the larder unit, the kitchen layout creates an open and welcoming atmosphere, with place for socializing as well as cooking. The larder units can cater for integrated appliances or storage of produce. The knobs on the vitrine unit is fitted in an elevated position and strengthens the freestanding cupboard expression.
(A) The backsplash with shelf becomes a connecting element and keeps the kitchen balanced, the height is steered to create a balanced look, as well as functional distance between the tap and the shelf. A 50mm gap creates distance for easy cleaning as well as functional use.
Handle Positions
Knob and handle combinations
(A) The cast iron K&H family adds an expression of genuine materials and craftmanship. , by combining the two we create a dynamic and interesting look. By fitting the handle on the top drawer and the knobs on the lower we ease opening and closing and create a better pull grip for dishwashers or heavy drawers.
All handles are centered in width (1) and all positioned 60 mm from the top edge on the frontal. (2) creating more distance between handles and giving each object enough visual space.
(B) Combinations with only the knob creates a more minimalistic and symmetrical expression on two drawer combinations, this is a pure look with the knobs as iconic pieces.
The knob has a centered alignment with 60mm distance from the frontals top edge (2)
Handle Positions
Knob and handle combinations
For the freestanding larder unit, we want to create a refined and symmetrical combination where the knobs are grouped in the center with a positioning that high lights the height of the unit.
The knobs (1) are positioned 60mm from frontal top and bottom side, but with an 40mm alignment on the sides (2) accentuating linearity with vertical direction.
Handle Positions
Knob and handle combinations
The tall worktop standing vitrine unit with an elevated knob position, this strengthens the cabinets expression as a freestanding and solitary object.
The Knob is positioned 288 mm from bottom edge of the frontal and centered midpoint on the vertical frame piece on the door.
Handle Positions
For wall fitted vitrine units the knob has a raised positioned, this accentuates the vertical direction of the door and strengthens the furniture and cupboard expression.
The Knob is positioned 128 mm from bottom edge of the frontal and centered in midpoint of the vertical frame piece on the door.
The worktop with detailed edge can be used in combination with decor end panels, here the worktop becomes an elegant crowning element on the cabinets, similar to the decorative corniche.
(1) The worktop is created by combining 20- and 12-mm material.
(2) The worktop has a 10mm overhang on end panel sides, this is divided in two 5 mm steps
(3) The stepped edge should protrude from the frontal surface and create an overhang

Splashback shelf Height Recommendations
(A) When combining the splashback with shelf with the Montreaux tap we recommend a splashback height of 470mm, this creates a balanced gap that is both aesthetic and functional. Bear in mind that another tap can demand other splashback heights, a 50 mm distance between top of tap and bottom of shelf is recommended.
(B) When combining the splashback with wall fitted cabinets, we recommend alignment between bottom of shelf and cabinet. This creates a coherent linearity in the kitchen layout.
The decorative corniche creates a minimalistic and elegant top finish for cabinets. With its refined and balanced expression, the stepped detail being one key part of the concept. On the worktop it creates a “portal” design for wrap around/bridge solutions & on the cabinets it creates craftmanship details.
