5 TRENDS THIS SPRING IN SHOES

What Are the Most Expensive Weddings? 8. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston $1 million

4. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West $2.8 million

For their wedding, the couple spent $20,000 on fireworks alone.

The couple surprised their guests and flew them from Paris to Florence for the wedding, where they paid $400,000 to rent out Forte di Belvedere.

7. Elizabeth Taylor and Larry Fortensky $1.5 million

3. Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky $3 million

This was La Liz’s eighth time down the aisle, but certainly not her least expensive. For this wedding, the actress wore a $25,000 Valentino gown.

When this First Daughter got married, she dropped $500,000 on flowers and $600,000 (!) on tents for the event.

6. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas $2 million

2. Prince William and Kate Middleton $34 million

A wedding made for a (Hollywood) princess – Catherine wore a tiara atop her head, which set the couple back $300,000.

For security alone, the royals dropped $32 million.

5. Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman $2 million

1. Princess Diana and Prince Charles $48 million

For her winter wonderland-themed wedding, Christina spent more on her dress than most brides do on their entire weddings - $30,000.

But William’s parents had everyone beat, paying $48 million in 1981 – which amounts to $110 million today. What made it so expensive? Well, for example, the couple had 27 wedding cakes.

1. Crossover Strap Platform Sandals The ’90s continue their return! Platform sandals with a crossover strap are in this season, like this pair from Marséll.

2. Leather Mules If you’re looking for a bit of a lower heel, consider the leather mule, like these in a gorgeous blue color from Salvatore Ferragamo.

3. Heeled Sandals The higher the heel this season, the better! These shoes from Valentino Garavani support this spring trend, sweeping runways all over the world.

4. Patent Leather Platform Pumps Bottega Veneta has been a trendsetting line as of late, and this spring, they’re giving us patent leather platform pumps as the answer to what’s hot this spring.

5. Clogs Clogs of all types – heels, no heels, comfortable, not so much – are in this season, like these from Aeyde.

YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU Claiming a Fit and Healthy Routine

A

by: Leslie Dobbins

s we age, I can tell you, what used to work in the gym years ago may not work today. Changes in our metabolism, pregegancies and stress, all lead to our bodies not necessarily responding to the exercises that may have worked wonders in the past. As women, our bodies go through so many changes during our various seasons of life, but my advice is to never stop moving!

ONLINE Some of what you’ll find on

abouttown.io Sign up for our e-newsletter and get the Pic of the Week.

1. FOCUS ON BENEFITS OF MAINTAINING MUSCLE MASS

As our bodies age, we go through some inevitable changes that proper exercise can help combat. After the age of 30, most people will lose 3-5% of muscle mass each decade; this number is, however, fortunately something we can change! Research has shown that this percentage is much lower for those who regularly do resistance training exercises in order to build and maintain muscle mass. In addition to this, evidence suggests that increased muscle loss leads to increased chances of experiencing bone fractures in the case of a fall. Another added benefit to working to increase and maintain muscle mass is a boost in metabolism! For the majority of women, we see a decline in metabolic rate after the age of 30. Although both hormonal and genetic factors play a role in this, we can take control of having the best metabolism possible by working to maintain as much muscle mass as we can! It’s hard work, but the benefits majorly outweigh the costs! 2. INCORPORATE FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

Other things which unfortunately are quick to leave us as our bodies age are functional skills, such as balance and flexibility. Think about daily tasks, such as bending over to pick up a child or grandchild, bending down to tie your shoes, etc. How about standing on one leg at a time to put on a pair of pants or high heels? I encourage you to explore adding exercises such as yoga, pilates, or barre class to your routine to incorporate these ever-important skills! Even if you do not enjoy these types of exercises, remember that it is crucial to perform a good stretch routine after any workout! We can’t forget that maintaining the ability to perform daily functional tasks as we age leads to an increased ability to live independently for a longer portion of our lives.

Our Annual Look at Who’s Helping Who in Birmingham

3. AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE

As a young woman, my gym goals were primarily aesthetic. However, as I have gotten older, I sometimes wish I could go back and tell my younger self to focus on workouts that would serve as preventative measures for some of the challenges that occur with progressing age. Be conscious of working out at the appropriate level of resistance and intensity for your age and fitness level and don’t worry about what the person next to you thinks of your weight selection. Only you know what’s right for your body! If you exercise in a way that prevents injury, you will never have to worry about finding a cure for an injured joint or muscle. As women, we take on so many responsibilities in life, not the least of which is taking care of ourselves! Continuing to keep moving has countless benefits for our health as we age. Don’t have a current workout routine? Don’t worry, it’s never too late to start to get moving! Grab a friend, go on a walk, and plan out a preventative exercise routine that fits in with your life. Your body will thank you for it!

ELEVATE YOUR HOME FOR THE SPRING MARKET

Christen Crosby at Ray & Poynor explains how to get ahead in this competitive market.

While shopping, we pick up what draws us in. We try it on, and we buy the one that looks, fits, and feels the best. Home shopping happens the same way. Buyers slow down for appeal, walk in to see how it feels, fall in love with the one that flows, and buy the house that flatters their lifestyle most. 1. Begin with curb appeal. How often do you

slow down passing by a beautiful home? A well-manicured lawn draws everyone in. Not sure where to start? Consult the experts at Millhouse Howell Landscape Company to take yours to the next level.

2. Lighting sets the mood. Exterior lighting

improves curb appeal in the evenings while interior lighting sets the tone indoors. Be sure all of your bulbs are soft white and emit the same color light.

life and the perception of a well cared for home. People see your closets, drawers, cabinets, and pantry. Color coordinate, place handbags upright, forward face your labels. Overwhelmed? Call the experts at Go Get Organized. They’ll provide a short term fix for your listing, offer a pack and unpack service for your move, and propose long term solutions for an organized way of life in your new home.

6. Bring in crisp, white linens. They are refreshing, clean, and lighten a colorful space. Consider white bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen linens as well as light lamps, pillows, and throws. Looking for quality items with an approachable price? Go to GILT.com for up to 70% off coveted designers. 7. Focus on one space at a time. Desmond Tutu

wisely said “there is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” This age old wisdom applies to preparing your home for buyers: focus on one space at a time.

4. Deep clean indoors and outdoors. All

With so many ways to get your home market ready, I believe this short list is most impactful. Think about who is going to be a good fit for your home and style your spaces in ways that cater to them. MY CARNIVOROUS DIET

> After my first, highly-successful experiment with a strictly-Carnivore lifestyle - consuming only animal products (with the exception of a limited amount of nuts to help achieve appropriate fat intake) - I was confident that the same plan would be equally productive the second time. But I tried to cheat the system. I cut corners and sidelined some of the most important guidelines. And it did not work. I self-sabotaged and instead of leaner, stronger and sharper, I was just frustrated. Lesson learned: cheating the system does not work. > I shifted gears and fell back onto a Ketogenic lifestyle. It should have worked great. It did not. My inability to embrace the concept of “good fat” - a deeply-rooted and lifelong misunderstanding - deflated my efforts and sabotaged my potential yet again. Instead I found myself fat-frustrated and stuck. Lesson learned: the system requires adherence and commitment for success. Fail. > No closer to my dream body and never one to lie down in defeat, I needed something more extreme, something with more clearly defined rigid boundaries. I landed on the HCG diet - a controversial diet that pairs extreme caloric deficit with the hormone HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) intake. Three weeks in, with strict adherence to a 500-700 daily caloric budget, a more rigorous mostly-cardio workout routine, and only less than a handful of deviations from the diet plan (read, “cheat meals”), I have seen the scale drop a total of 10 rather inconsistent pounds, and admittedly sidelined “my best life” to move just a little closer to lean. Lesson learned: measuring, weighing, and counting every ounce, gram, and calorie I consume might work, but at a cost. Fail? > What I know today is that of all the fad diets I’ve tried, the Carnivore lifestyle (round one) has been the most effective and successful, and remains my favorite. Its short list of rules, zero measuring or counting, and hard to botch guidelines gave me all the freedom to adhere and achieve… as long as I chose to follow it to a T. Pretty worth it, in my opinion. This carnivore girl will certainly circle back, and be sure to report.

What Makes Non-Ablative Laser Treatments Different These treatments are so efficacious you might never need makeup again.

At Gunn Dermatology, we specialize in offering the most cutting-edge and innovative treatments to make your skin look as radiant as possible. Some of those treatments are Non-Ablative Laser Treatments – perfect for patients concerned about wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, irregular skin texture, melasma, or deep wrinkles. Unlike some laser treatments, Non-Ablative Laser Treatments require no downtime and are safe for all skin types. Some areas we recommend for this treatment? The face, décolletage, or the knees. It offers a refresh of your complexion so considerable, that you might be able to throw your foundation in the trash. Here’s what to expect from this treatment.

HOW DOES IT WORK? The Icon uses a special deep light energy to treat below the skin’s surface targeting numerous signs of aging. The carefully controlled heat stimulates your skin’s healing response deep within, ultimately producing skin that is smoother, firmer, and more radiant over time. This action takes place in the skin’s deeper tissue, so you aren’t left with the peeling that accompanies many more aggressive skin rejuvenation techniques. This makes Iconic treatment makes an excellent skin rejuvenation option for the face with no work downtime!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? This treatment is only 40 minutes and improves wrinkles, acne scars, and pigment. There is no peeling or flaking, and it is safe for all skin types, including the darkest skin tones. It is suitable for sensitive areas around the mouth and eyes and can improve the appearance of melasma with multiple sessions.

For more information about any of these treatments, contact Dr. Holly Gunn at Gunn Dermatology for a consultation. 32 Church St, Mountain Brook 205-415-7536.

NO DOWNTIME This treatment is Iconic Non-Ablative Resurfacing. This noninvasive procedure heats beneath the skin’s surface to treat and renew your skin without harming its outer layer. The treatment improves wrinkles, dark spots, melasma, acne scars, surgery scars, and more. The Icon is so gentle that it can even be used on the delicate areas around the eyes and mouth.

WHAT ABOUT PHOTOREJUVENATION? Photorejuvenation reverses sun damage by reducing the brown spots and redness in the skin. This a no downtime treatment and any area of the body can be treated to even out skin tone and improve skin texture. The treatment has anti-aging, rosacea, and acne benefits. Iconic IPL Photofacial (also known as Intense Pulsed Light or Photorejuvenation) is hailed as the “Gold Standard” treatment for the reduction of pigmentation. Age spots, sun damage, rosacea, broken capillaries, and freckles can create a dull and aged complexion. With IPL you can target this pigmentation to expose fresher, younger-looking skin. Dr. Gunn has been performing IPL for over 15 years and firmly believes IPL should be a standard part of your skincare routine. Age spots, brown spots, sunspots, and redness can make the skin look weathered. Erase the pigment of time on your face, neck, and chest and turn up the radiance. This treatment helps create and maintain a look to strive for.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF IPL? The light energy of the photorejuvenation treatment reduces the brown pigment and redness in the skin. This light is converted into heat energy, which helps to fade those specific problem areas resulting in a more even, brighter complexion with less discoloration. IPL Photofacial has been performed for over 20 years, and there are many studies in the medical literature demonstrating true, anti-aging benefits. Treatments can reduce rosacea symptoms and make the skin look and feel healthier. Individuals who have had IPL Photofacial treatments once or twice a year over a decade have healthier more radiant skin with less skin cancer than those who do not have these treatments. Furthermore, for people who already have sun damage, IPL is a great tool to “turn back time” and reverse the damage that’s already been done! The Icon IPL is one of the most effective and comfortable treatments with high energies and sapphire cooling.

WHAT ABOUT AFTER TREATMENT CARE? Wear sunscreen as part of your daily skincare routine and avoid sun exposure; a light exfoliation may be done on day four with ZO® Enzymatic Peel or a Hydrafacial to help removed the nutmeg granules left behind.

THE END RESULT Most patients consider these two treatments the best thing to happen to their skin, ever – so much so that many have saved ample amounts of money on makeup, because they just simply don’t need foundation or concealer anymore. These treatments give patients a trademark glow in a safe, effective way. If you want to learn more, give our office a call. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have!

FINDING BALANCE

I do my best to knock the most straightforward things off my ‘to-do’ list first thing in the morning, rather than leave them lingering. This frees me up to focus on the more interesting aspects of work for the rest of the day and makes it easier to wrap everything up to enjoy evenings and weekends with my family and friends. WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

I started in Pre-Med at the University of Georgia, quickly realizing that wasn’t the best fit. On a whim, I took Intro to Finance, and it immediately clicked. A decade later, I’ve spent most of my career at SunTrust (now Truist) in various roles and several cities, staying with an organization I love while being challenged and learning new skills.

Mary Beth Young (R) Assistant Vice President, Commercial Banker FINDING BALANCE

“Either you run the day or the day runs you.” Balance must be created and recreated daily. I push myself, give myself grace and repeat! WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

I enjoy helping my clients prepare for the future and desired to see more female representation leading the industry.

Community is at the heart of the Truist Purpose. On July 16, 2019, BB&T and SunTrust announced the Truist Bank Community Benefits Plan, under which Truist committed to lend or invest $60 billion to low and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers, and in LMI and minority communities from 2020 to 2022. The plan is a concrete example of Truist’s commitment to supporting investment in the heritage banks’ communities. Additionally and locally, Truist has a longstanding trusted and respected reputation with non-profits and community partners throughout our state.

We are proudly located in the Bluff Park community within the City of Hoover and gladly serve the surrounding areas as well. Our practice is committed to providing you and your family with the best possible dental care available today in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Here at Kasey Davis Dentistry, we strive to create lifelong relationships with each of our patients while providing professional and compassionate care.

Dr. Kasey Davis DMD FINDING BALANCE

I’ve learned over the years that I cannot fix work matters from home…and I can’t see into my home from work. I love sharing my family with my patients, and parts of my work life with my family. But I do my best to keep them separate and in their rightful places. WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

I was drawn to people, healthcare, and long term relationships with patients, but also really wanted time to spend time with my friends and future family. I wanted a big one (and got it... LOL.) Dentistry was really the perfect balance in being able to give me all of the above.

Emma Wells Strait Owner, Heezie’s FINDING BALANCE

Since by business is online, I communicate with my customers all the time. I know it sounds cliche, but it does not feel like work doing what I love. (My husband might disagree, as there are packages all over our house.) WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

My love for accessorizing, gift-giving, and decorating lead me to my current profession. I have always had a dream of owning my own business and sharing the things I love with others. I named Heezie’s after my late grandmother who taught me my love for these things.

I love to shop local and I enjoy teaming up with other small businesses for pop-up shops and promotions all over town. I am so grateful for my customers and it is exciting to support the varied customer base that comes with not having a fixed shop location. I want everyone to have a positive experience ordering online or shopping at one of my Heezie’s events.

WOMEN OF BUSINESS

Amy Young (L) Online Customer Care Manager FINDING BALANCE

Balancing work and life for me begins with prioritizing what’s important and then being intentional about where I spend my time and energy. WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

When I started working at Alabama Power in the Residential Call Center, I realized I enjoyed working with and helping others. Through the years at Alabama Power I have enjoyed the challenge of progressive opportunities that have allowed me to work with great teammates and customers. I love being able to show customers and fellow employees how important they are.

Denise McDaniel (C) Business Service Center Manager FINDING BALANCE

I balance work and life by having a definitive start and stop time each day. I also schedule ‘me time’ first thing in the morning for reading my Bible and exercise. WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

Being of service to others is a part of who I am, so working as a customer service professional has been a perfect fit throughout my career. The Business Service Center assists our commercial customers with establishing and maintaining their accounts and all other service-related inquiries. Our goal is to provide the best service; and continually seek ways to do it better.

Kisha Linley (R) Customer Operations Manager FINDING BALANCE

This is very important to me. While I do not mind the demands of work, I am very intentional about being present for my family and friends when I am at home. I think this helps me balance both. WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

I always wanted to become a nurse, but a random accounting class and a job in retail changed my course. I am an analytical person, but also find joy in helping others, which is why I think Customer Service is a good fit for me because it requires both.

The Autism Society’s mission is to provide education and advocacy for the 1 in 44 affected by autism. We serve families statewide through safety initiatives, information and resources, community education, family grants, and camps among other meaningful programs. Our goal is for individuals on the spectrum to be understood, be accepted, and supported in all community spaces.

Mary Robin Bynum FINDING BALANCE

Balancing work and family life can be challenging at times but having a great support system in place is key. I’m blessed to have family nearby who can step in if something comes up while I’m working. I have a schedule for everything, so I don’t get overwhelmed by various responsibilities. WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

I started volunteering with the Autism Society because I have a daughter on the autism spectrum and understand how a diagnosis can be difficult to navigate. This volunteer opportunity led to a full-time position which has been very rewarding knowing I am helping families like my own.

I take pride in the fact that my office, Davenport Dental & Wellness Center is owned and led by a dentist. A growing number of dental offices are not actually owned by a dentist—instead they are owned by private equity groups. If you want a dental office owned by an actual dentist who prioritizes your overall health, we are the office for you. We are proud to be located in Birmingham and to provide the best treatment to our patients in the community.

Dr. Celia Davenport DMD FINDING BALANCE

The balance between full-time work and parenting is always challenging. I have a young child as do many of my employees. I made sure to include a children’s room in my office for my family and my staff’s family to use. I wanted to own my own office so that I could make my own decisions about what is best for my patients and to control my hours to achieve the best work-life balance possible. WHAT LED ME TO MY PROFESSION

PROMOTION

GOOD TASTE By: Scott Atkinson, Wine Manager at PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE

The Crème de la Crème

S

ome of the most impressive and important personalities in the wine business are women. We will only scratch the surface here, sadly, but these are the crème de la crème. We have a pioneering legend in Martine Saunier of Martine’s Wines, an Italian doyenne upholding and burnishing her family’s legacy in Cristiana Tiberio of Azienda Agricola Tiberio, and a brilliant revolutionary in Mary Taylor of Mary Taylor Wines.

CRISTIANA TIBERIO - In 2008 Ricardo Tiberio handed the reins of the winemaking over to his gifted daughter Cristiana. Cristiana may be a farm girl from Abruzzo, but she is a brilliant winemaker who also teaches college level classes in the chemistry of winemaking. She also learned her craft in some of the most highly lauded wineries in Champagne (Jacques Selosse), Loire Valley (Nicolas Joly), and Mosel (Egon Muller) among others. But her heart took her home, “you can only truly make a wine with the greatest expression of the place if you have lived there and really understand the climate and sense of the place.” Which is why you are most likely to see her in the vineyards with her beautiful Abruzzese mountain dogs. We would be hard pressed to find a better bottle of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo for the money than what Cristiana crafts.

MARY TAYLOR When Mary first fell in love with wine in the early 1990s, it was the European classics that truly spoke to her and stole her heart. As a young professional selling French and Italian wine she quickly learned to appreciate wine in the “Old World” way— not as a luxury good reserved for special occasions, but a living agricultural product that belongs to everyday life. Simply put, the right wine is the perfect condiment. After many years working with the wines of Europe, Mary arrived at an important insight. Left in the dark by decades of simplistic marketing efforts that placed grape above geography, American consumers needed a brand they could trust to decipher the complex notion of terroir in a clear and straightforward way. Out of this realization, her elegant “White Label” was born. One may not recognize the geography on the white label, but the bottle contains an incredible wine at an incredible value.

MARTINE SAUNIER – Martine has been in the business since birth, as it was her Parisian birthright. In so far as we are concerned, we shall start with 1979 when Martine incorporated her wine importing business. She disarmed the wine world with her acumen and charm, and is now regarded as having one of the most impressive wine portfolios in the business. There are precious few guarantees of quality in the wine industry, despite what we may wish to believe. Seeing the Martine’s logo on a bottle of imported wine is about as close as one can hope for an absolute guarantee of quality.

Piggly Wiggly has been named the Best Place to Buy Wine in Birmingham for 6 years in-a-row in About Town’s Annual Reader’s Poll. If you’re looking for personal service focusing on the best recommendations at the the best prices, visit any of their Birmingham locations. ABOUT
