BIRMINGHAM RESIDENT JOSEPH BRASWELL understands the meaning of family business. He is the owner and new face of Guin Service, the local plumbing and HVAC company that his grandfather started back in 1958 with just one truck and a strong will to succeed. At 25 years old, W.C. “Bill” Guin made his first hire— his own father. Mr. Guin later employed his brother, and, eventually, all three of his children worked there before opening their own small businesses in other endeavors with their respective spouses.

Today, Guin Service is very much still a family affair. Not only does the company treat each and every customer like family, but also many of the longtime employees proudly work with their own children, including General Manager Ricky Lockhart, whose son is a technician and whose wife works part-time in the office. Not surprisingly, Braswell also works alongside two of his cousins. This sense of family at Guin resonates with its customers, many of whom have been using the company for decades for any and all plumbing and HVAC needs.

“Family has always been and will continue to be important to this company,” says Braswell.

“It’s not unusual for us to service the homes of a grandparent, child, and grandchild from the same family in one week. We have customers that have been using Guin for 40-plus years.

That kind of trust and loyalty is something you don’t see every day, especially in this industry, and all of our longtime customers truly are part of our Guin family.”

At 30 years old, Braswell, a graduate of Mountain Brook High School and UAB, will be the first to tell you that the business is successful because of its employees who have worked there long before he came on board (some since even before he was born), and is clear about not wanting to take any credit. “It’s not about me,” says Braswell. “The most important thing is doing the right thing, even if it isn’t easy or profitable.” Luckily for the company’s customers, that rare mindset is shared by the entire team.

WHO HAS THE BEST THE TAILGATING IN THE SEC?

Ask an Ole Miss fan and they’ll swear they do. The Grove is great, but (soory to my Ole miss friends) a bit over rated.

Most other schools aren’t that far off, but just haven’t had the hype. So much of is location on campus. The quad at Tuscaloosa is awesome if you have a spot, but what if you’re assigned a spot on 3 tier parking deck? Being on the Tennessee river right next to stadium is tough to beat, but not everyone has access to a yacht. SC’s stadium at the Fairgrounds is great, but not being on campus takes a little something away.

With so many people decending onto college campuses, it’s becoming tougher and tougher to just set-up, and with limited spots most a premium spots are now assigned.

OUR FAVORITE SPOTS TO WATCH COLLEGE FOOTBALL The Filling Station We love this place when the weather is nice. Good food, but a Great atmosphere with it’s indoor-outdoor space, and being right on Crestwood attracts a great crowd.

Billy’s A Birmingham institution and great place to meet, and run into people. Great food and TV’s completely surround you.

Paramount Maybe the best sportsbar in Bham. Offers an arcade if the games get boring.

Owned by the same crew that has El Barrio, they run a super tight ship with great service and food. The downtown location adds to fantastic atmosphere.

Otey’s Another Birmingham instition with the best burgers and chcicken sandwiches in town. They added garage doors a few years back which make it even better. Not the biggest place, so it can get crowded.

ON VINYL THE AVALANCHES WILDFLOWER

With cover art inspired by Sly and the Family Stone’s There’s A Riot Goin’ On, Wildflower has been released in several different design additions. Sixteen years after their sample heavy original release, the Austrailian electronic group, The Avalanches, return to incorporate numerous vocalists and musicians including Tame Impalas’s Kevin Parker, Biz Markie and Father John Misty. The sound is a tripped-out neo-psychedelia disco hip hop mash-up with heavy samples. The first single, Frankie Sinatra, like most of album, has a very unconvention structure, and at first listening, can actually be quite annoying, until it’s infectious originally takes hold. The current single, Subways, also very unstructured, is more catchy and seems straight from the disco era.

Nashville Like a Local NASHVILLE, TN

Nashville’s growth has meant that several neighborhoods can provide their own self-contained entertainment.

From afar, everything seems to center around country music, but Nashville’s emergence as one of the clear capitals of the Southeast has meant the city has opened a diverse and wide ranging food and entertainment scene. Traditionally, Nashville has not been considered a culinary hot-spot, but things seem to be changing. Fueled by an in-flux of young professionals, Nashville’s growth has come from grass roots entrepreneurship, a diverse economy and efficient local government.

STAY For a tourist town, surprisingly, Nashville really doesn’t have all the hotel options you would think. The Hermitage located downtown is the tradional ‘grand hotel’. It offers a great lobby.

The Omni Downtown is a favorite amongst reviewers offering many amneties including a roof top pool. It’s always worth trying to see if you can get into The 404. Featuring only five king rooms custom appointed with a mix of vintage and custom furnishings including a revolving art gallery. Located in the ehart of the Gulch. Good luck getting in.

LUNCH The Pharmacy (below) “The Wurst-Burger joint in Nashville” The pharmacy specializes a German flair with wursts and bier, and an old school soda fountain. (Hence the name) Saint Anejo Mexican standards and over 100 tequilas.

Located in the Gulch, Anejo is a cool and casual with late night hours and a great patio.

Edley’s It’s not easy recommending BBQ in Nashville.

That’s not a Nashville specialty. But several locations of Edley’s offer great smoked meats with traditional Southern sides.

BREAKFAST Biscuit Love Started as a food truck in 2012, the name says it all. Located in the heart of the Gulch.

Try the bonuts.

Pancake Pantry Don’t be discouraged by the line outside, surprisingly it moves fairly quickly. Not surprisingly, pancakes are their specialty.

Loveless Café Classic Nashville in look, feel and food.

Their country-style breakfast will make you feel right at home with warm biscuits and thick chocolate milk served in mason jars.

Dozen Bakery (above) Quick and Easy. The place for pastries. Its baked goods supply many other local places their breads.

The Sutler A high-end saloon feel with live music.

Bluegrass Brunch can be rowdy at even at 10am. The bottomless mimosas are great Tavern A sleek gastro pub on Broadway. Don’t under estimate the 2 for 1 drink specials on Sundays. Try the red velvet waffles.

Chauhan Ale & Masala House Voted in many of ‘the Best of local lists. Housed in a refurbished brick garage it combines traditional Southern and Indian cuisine.

City House Located in trendy Germantown, City House’s chef James Beard-nominated chef Tandy Wilson offers rustic Italian with a regional flair.

Butcher & Bee (below) East Nashville hosts this Charleston original. A unique element of the restaurant’s design is a built-in lofted bar with room for 15 guests, perched over two 10-seat banquettes at the front of the space.

5th & Taylor Inspired by the traditional family meal, 5th is rustic and airy with high ceilings, dark custom furniture, fiddle leaf fig trees, and low lighting. Dozens of candles align the center divider where a large statue of General Francis Nash (the city’s namesake) stands.

The Station (above) A no-frills Bluegrass mecca. It’s lack of planned charm is its charm. On any random night you can hear some of the amazing musicians in the country.

The Basement A professional staff and a professional sound. Located under the legendary record store, Grimey’s, The Basement boasts a wide range of styles- all in an intimate setting and great acoustics.

The 5 Spot A diverse crowd with diverse genres. Punk to indie to country takes the stage usually with a focus on the local.

DRINKS Old Glory Formerly a boiler room has an astonishing interior. Instead of getting rid of the organic elements of the building, they incorporated them in the design. Sisters Alexis Soler and Britt Soler just opened this Edgehill space in March. Bastion The Wedgewood-Houston (WeHo) hangout caters to the neighborhood’s entrepreneurs, artists, and creatives seeking a nearby spot to unwind with friends. “I just wanted to create the type of place that I want to hang out in; a place that isn’t pretentious. Beers, shots, a few simple cocktails, along with some other elements, says owner Josh Habiger. Patterson House Just off Broadway, but far removed from the tourists, this mellow hush toned speak easy is a locals place. Creative cocktails with a creative environment. Mycologists serve to only a handful of people that can get in.

Royal Treatment in the Magic City.

Earlier this year, Richella Heekin and Ben Marlow arrived at the Birmingham, England airport expecting to catch their flight to Las Vegas (for Ben’s birthday), but learned there was no plane to catch. Richella accidentally booked their flight out of Birmingham, Alabama instead of Birmingham, England. Upon learning of the mishap, Birmingham businessman Tom Cosby coordinated a first class trip to Alabama that was chock-full of quintessential Birmingham activities. After their five day stint in Vegas, Richella and Ben arrived in Birmingham on Tuesday, 8/16.

Special thanks to the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau, Big Communications, REV Birmingham, Happenin’s in the ‘Ham and Alabama Department of Tourism for coordinating the couple’s visit and to all of the local attractions, eateries and donors such as Stewart Perry Construction, that made the trip possible.
