PROMINENTLY LOCATED on the corner of 3rd Ave S in Pepper Place’s Entertainment District, Ignite Cycle is Birmingham’s only rhythm-based cycling studio. Owner, Tiffany Martin, gives you a peek inside what the new studio is like and what to expect.
WHY DID YOU START IGNITE? When I moved to Birmingham, I was delighted by the fitness community and wellness options, but surprised to discover there wasn’t already a boutique cycling studio. I was a cycling instructor in Boston and had a passion for curating exceptional exercise experiences for others and creating a supportive community among my riders. So really, it was a matter of seeing an opportunity and going for it.
effective ride as it enables you to engage more muscles. Near the end of the ride, we take the focus to our arms with 2-4lbs weights - this may not sound like much weight, but it quickly feels heavy thanks to strategic movements. Following the stretch at the end of the ride, you can grab a high five from your instructor and a chilled eucalyptus towel to maximize that exhilarated & refreshed feeling.
WHAT IS A TYPICAL IGNITE CYCLE CLASS LIKE? During our signature rides, we have you in and out of The Bike Room in 45 minutes. Your time is valuable, and we respect that. The room is dark and the music loud, creating the space for you to focus on your ride and leave whatever else is going on in your life at the door.
WHAT SETS IGNITE APART FROM ANY OTHER WORKOUT? What we do is about so much more than riding bikes in a dark room to loud music. We are on a mission to connect our riders to the highest parts of themselves and to their fellow riders. Yes, our riders love the workout, and as a result of our higher purpose, the community is eagerly open to new faces and always happy to help & cheer them on.
Through the class, we ride to the beat and do some functional choreography during each song - some songs are fast, some songs are slow, but each song is designed to encourage you to be your best. Your instructor will coach you along the way on how to do each move to get the most out of it. You’ll notice that our bikes don’t have cages for you to strap your tennis shoes into. Instead, we loan you complimentary cycling shoes that clip into the bike. This gives you a more efficient and
CAN I HANG? One of the most common questions we get from potential riders is, “Will I die?” Our answer is always, “Yes, but like...in a good way!” Every single ride will push you physically and mentally. I’ve been doing this for years, and I am still consistently challenged by the workout. We tell all of our riders to listen to their body and only do what feels right. READY TO RIDE? BOOK YOUR BIKE.

When is Getting a Divorce the Best Choice? >>> I have a dilemma. My husband and I are no longer compatible, but we have children who are in elementary school. We want to separate, but do not want to do that to our children. If our children are living with a dysfunctional marriage, is it better for them for us to divorce? Of course, a divorce will break their hearts, but is it worse for them to see their parents miserable? Some of our friends and family say we need to continue counseling and figure out a way to make it work for the children’s sake. And others are saying separating will be more beneficial for the children, because they will finally see their parents happy. The first thing you probably need to do is stop asking for opinions and/or listening to advice. This is a decision you and your husband have to make for the benefit of your family and your happiness. This is not an easy decision to make. It should definitely not be done in haste. No one out there knows the RIGHT answer. They know what they see, and what they think is best. Only you and your husband know the intricacies of your home, your relationship, and your heart. I’m going to ask you several questions. What makes you and your husband incompatible at this point? Would either/both of you be open to a short-term or even a long-term separation? How long have you been in counseling? Have you tried more than one counselor? Is the home a volatile place or just an unhappy place? Sometimes a separation gives each of you the time to work on yourselves and see what you value about the relationship. It helps you to see where the disconnect might have occurred. It can give the room for you to take a breath and see what you are about to embark on with this choice. This can allow you to determine if divorce is really the most appropriate choice. Separation is a difficult choice because someone usually wants to just be finished. I think it can be the best choice when you are overwhelmed, over-emotional, or unsure. YES...it might just be a stepping stone to a divorce, but it might also be the space you need to find your way to reconciliation. There is a great book recently put out by John Gottman called “Eight Dates.”
I would recommend giving it a shot. Remember the grass isn’t always greener. Sometimes you just need to learn how to make your grass healthier. As for the children, I just attended my stepson’s wedding where they actually shared in the ceremony how his wife knew he “thought differently” than others when on one of their first dates he talked about how his parents being divorced was such a blessing because he had two loving and supportive sets of parents instead of just one. Children do adapt. Some better than others. This has more to do with the parents than the children most of the time. It is definitely more harmful for children to stay in a dysfunctional home than to live in two happy homes. Can the two of you coparent in friendly and positive ways? Will you likely use the children as weapons? There are actually situations in which the children would have been better off in the dysfunctional home with married parents because it becomes even more dysfunctional upon divorce. Check yourselves on this one! My advice...If you are going to divorce, stay in counseling individually and possibly together throughout the process. Learn how to forgive, coparent, and be friends. If your children are the primary concern, these things will be what gives them the best chance. This relationship you learn to have with one another is what leads to them saying how blessed they are in regards to your divorce as you both sit there together on their wedding days.

Reasons to Love Birmingham
Jemison Trail I’m a runner, so I love Jemison Trail. The trail is so peaceful, beautiful, and a great way to enjoy nature without having to leave the city. I always feel renewed after finishing a run on Jemison trail. My favorite spot is where you can walk across the creek on the steps. – Sally, Business Owner
Downtown Homewood It’s so cute and makes me feel like I’m home. Downtown Homewood is one of the reasons I chose to come to Birmingham for college. All of the amazing restaurants in that area don’t hurt either!
Cahaba River
– Madelynn,
I’m from Pensacola and miss the water dearly. The clean, ice cold, little Cahaba River on a hot summer’s afternoon restores my soul. – Sarah, Artist
Pepper Place My mom and I have been going to The Market at Pepper Place every Saturday morning for about 5 years now. We love starting our day downtown with a yummy iced coffee from Homewood Gourmet and a pain au chocolat from Hinkel’s Bakery. The farmers and makers we meet there have become friends. As an artist, I know the importance of buying locally, and the value in supporting people in the community. The market is a true gem in Birmingham.

Reasons to Love Birmingham
Civil Rights Institute My favorite place in Birmingham is the corner of Kelly Ingram Park that meets with 16th Street Baptist Church and the Civil Rights Institute. A spot that has one of Birmingham’s most important stories to tell and the most truth to learn. The community within that space is so strong, life-giving, and supportive. The physical landscape is beautiful and eye-catching. People from all around the world come to learn about that aspect of our city’s history. It’s a space I go back to often whether through volunteering or visiting. – Hope, Actor
Gatos and Beans One of my favorite places to visit is Gatos and Beans because I can play with cats while I drink coffee and do some work. For me it is like heaven on earth, being surrounded by cats. It’s my happy place. – Madelyn, Photographer
Ruffner Mountain The spot I love in Birmingham is above the quarry trail at Ruffner Mountain. There is a flat rock hidden behind the trees along the path going up from the quarry floor and my family often has picnics there. My kids love it because it is covered in moss and they enjoy exploring it. It’s the perfect place to unwind with my family and enjoy nature so close to the city. – Hannah, Business Owner
Birmingham Museum of Art It’s such a great place to visit and see beautiful art from all over and it is right here in Alabama. I spend a lot of time in the sculpture gardens and you can’t beat the food at the restaurant. The

ORANGE THEORY
Orange Theory was one of the first concept gyms to pop up, and it’s growth and success is no accident. Considered an intense but lower-impact workout, Orange Theory’s scientific formula of getting your heartrate in the ‘Orange Zone’ has been a huge success. Their motto of ‘guidance, not guesswork’ is designed to have their trainers ensure a personal formula for each person for real results.
Vestavia Vestavia Hills City Center 790 Montgomery HWY, STE 132 (205) 823-5700 Downtown 117 20th Street South (205) 716-2111 Inverness 210 Inverness Corners (205) 991-9700

THE WORKOUT: Even on your most unmotivated day, you will feel like you got a great workout because every class incorporates weights, rowing and treadmill intervals. Some days are higher reps and longer sprints (endurance), while other days are focused on heavier weight, steep inclines, and quick bursts of ALL OUT sprints (strength). The science behind the Orange Zone is the heart of Orange Theory Fitness. What is the ‘Orange Zone’ and how do Orange Theory workouts use it? The ‘Orange Zone’ is 84 percent or higher of an individual’s max heart rate. OTF focuses on training intervals of 12-20 minutes within this zone, which results in an increase of approximately 20% calories burned for the next 24 hours. Not too shabby!
FITNESS LEVEL : Orange Theory’s reputation precedes them but don’t be intimidated if you’ve never tried a class. If you’re as nervous about treadmills as I was, take a walker’s pace with a higher incline. Need little-to-no impact? There’s a bike you’re able to use. Unsure of technique? The coach reviews each movement prior and during the class. Before taking the class, I would have said OTF’s entry level would be intermediate. After taking a class, it is very accessible for the newbie gym goer while also allowing for growth in an advanced athlete.

TAKEAWAYS: I was greeted by a coach who asked the important questions. Such as: do you have any current or previous injuries? Have you taken 5 or fewer classes? Have you used this type of equipment before? Having been involved in a lot of areas within a gym, I loved this. a must for every gym.

Peck’s Points!
3 pointers for selling your current home ... and finding the next one. 1. Get Right on Price. It’s very easy to over price your home. Spending too much time on the Internet can walk you down that path quickly. Leaving,“wiggle room” or “room to negotiate” is detrimental to your sale and only helps other sellers in the area. 2. Clutter Less, Show More. I use the “Half & Half”
rule. Look at flat surfaces of your home and remove half of the items. Next, remove half of those items. Same goes for pillows, clothes, pictures and books. You want to show the space of your home and allow the buyer to imagine their belongings in it; not how many figurines you can fit on a hallway table.
Danny and Sara Skinner
Cole and Katherine Kubelic
3. Visit Neighborhoods, Not Websites. The Internet
offers an amazing array of choices for the home buyer and gives tons of very practical and useful information. However, home buying is a Process of Elimination rather than a Shopping Spree. This is where we will make a plan based on your wants and needs for your new home. Next, we will tour neighborhoods that have the most listings that meet your needs. Websites can help narrow down options, but spending time in a house is the only way to feel right at home.

MOTIVATION I have a family member who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at a young age. Not long after the diagnoses, I started researching ways I could do my part in fighting the disease, and I found the Parkinson Association of Alabama. After learning more about what the Parkinson Association of Alabama does, particularly their work with UAB, I started volunteering. It is an amazing feeling knowing your work is helping UAB, who is at the forefront of finding a treatment and a cure. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BHAM I love the variety of activities and culture Birmingham has to offer. It has many of the opportunities and attributes of a larger city, but without the hassle that can come with a large city.

MOTIVATION I was excited to be a part of our company’s foundation in order to have an active role in how the resources were directed in our community. I’ve gotten the opportunity to go on site visits and hear from several organizations in the area, both familiar names and some that were new to me. It’s encouraging to see the good work that people are doing in the Birmingham area and to see how we can help. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BHAM I love that Birmingham is a big enough city to have an incredible quality of life with fun dining and recreational activities, but also small enough to feel like you can make meaningful connections with people. My husband and I chose Birmingham for these reasons, and we are excited to see our family grow here.

MOTIVATION Cancer is a far-reaching disease that has had an impact on nearly all of us in some way or another. After being introduced to the Reed Foundation back in 2013, I knew that the work they were doing was very important so I jumped at the chance to help. It is our goal to help finish the fight against GI cancer. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BHAM I think Birmingham is an awesome middle ground between a small town and a big city. There is a strong sense of community and focus on local businesses that you would find in a small town but plenty of growth and economic activity that a bigger city typically offers.

MOTIVATION “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.” Two thirds of children of color not reading on grade level by fourth grade fall victim to the criminal justice system. I See Me, Inc., founded by elementary school teacher Devon Fields, is changing that paradigm by engaging children in literature that reflects their culture and mirrors their image. The mission is to increase the literacy rate in children and create a positive educational image by associating reading with success, self-esteem and self-worth. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BHAM Birmingham truly is the “Magic City.” The people are the heart and soul of the magic. There are so many talented and dedicated individuals, charities and associations that each strive to make our community a better place to live, work and play. We started the Mike Slive Foundation just two years ago and have already raised over $500,000 and funded seven prostate cancer research grants. Using the platform of college athletics, we hope to change the dialogue around prostate cancer and help save lives. MOTIVATION Since Gastro-Intestinal cancer is the most common form of cancer and doesn’t discriminate between men or women, most people have been or know someone that has been affected by one of the ten types of GI cancers. My personal values include giving back to the community and having fun doing it- so I knew I had to investigate opportunities to be apart of the Reed Foundation Junior Board. I can genuinely tell that everyone on the board wants to help improve the life of others and give back to a community that we all love. I am so proud to be apart of such an awesome foundation with so many generous people.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BHAM Birmingham has always been and always will be home for me. From the growth of downtown, new developing food and brewery scene, and a college football enthusiast hot spot it is hard not to love Birmingham. My favorite thing would have to be the people. You won’t find such diverse, friendly, and outgoing people anywhere else and that is the main reason I never want to leave.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BHAM As a person with deep roots in Birmingham, I appreciate its struggle to preserve its past while positioning itself for a profitable future. We love our steel industry, but recognize the importance of clean air and water to maintain a high quality of living. We love our football, but we readily embrace soccer as an emerging sport in Birmingham. We love our established restaurants that have brought us world acclaim, but we still find a way to allow young entrepreneurs to grow the food truck business. In all, Birmingham is bigger than its past, with a bright future for all of its residents as we all work together to embrace all of our interests and talents.

MOTIVATION I have a heart for pediatric oncology patients and knew when moving back to Birmingham that I would want to work with this patient population in more ways than one. I saw first hand the effects that cancer has on the entire family, both physically and financially, and Hope For Autumn helps financially assist families being treated for childhood cancer at Children’s of Alabama. The biggest draw for me was that Hope For Autumn dedicates the entire month of September to raising awareness of childhood cancer, ending with Give Hope Day, a day recognized by schools all across Alabama.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BHAM Growing up in Birmingham was fun, but “adulting” here is even better! I enjoy the community of friends I’ve made here more than anything. The revitalization that has occurred downtown, whether it be new restaurants, more outdoor activities offered, or the increase in concerts brought to the area, there is always something fun to do with family and friends. WINES FOR GIVING Charity isn’t necessarily a simple and straightforward thing, or at least it doesn’t have to be. There is the simple act of giving something to someone, that is straightforward charity. But there is also leading by example, giving of time and energy, and not taking something so that others may have it. The wines chosen for this issue are great examples of charity, in whatever form they have chosen.
Jarman Chardonnay After seeing how Alzheimer’s and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) affected their loved ones, the folks at Holman Ranch decided to champion the charities affiliated with those afflictions for donations. Proceeds from every bottle of Jarman go directly to research on curing these diseases. That is wonderful, but so is the wine. A delicious, balanced, California Chardonnay.
>>> Try this with Coq au Vin.
Tibero Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Cristina Tiberio and her brother Antonio are resurrecting lost and forgotten grapes to make fantastic wines. They also believe that a rising tide lifts all ships. With that mindset they have become a go-to resource for other farmers in the Abruzzo who are serious about making world class wines from indigenous grapes. This Cerasuolo d’Aburzzo is an amazing rosé which can deal with Southern heat, but is also delicious for when the weather gets cooler.
>>> Pairs wonderfully alongside a simple green salad with grilled salmon and a garlicky dressing.
Stolpman La Cuadrilla Peter Stolpman was giving the vineyard workers a hard time for not drinking the wine they had helped to make. It was harvest and the atmosphere was joyous. Their response? Simple, this wine does not go with our food. It was then and there that the Stolpman family brought the workers into the fold and they created La Cuadrilla together. And La Cuadrilla is the workers wine. They created it, so the proceeds go to them.
>>> This wine also goes great with Mexican food. One of the rare red wines that can handle the heat and spice.
Bedrock Zinfandel Morgan Twain-Peterson was born into a great winemaking situation, but he took nothing for granted. After his dad, Joel, sold Ravenswood, Morgan suggested that they could dream it all up again. The Bedrock project is the result of this dream. The wisdom, experience, and talent of the father are born again in the son who has worked his tail off to ensure the legacy of California Zinfandel. They are going back to all of the vineyards and protecting them for generations to come… all the while they are making some profound wines.
>>> Try this the next time you do BBQ ribs and fries.
