How often do buy music?

I typically only buy music when an artist or band I’ve been following for years releases a new album. When that happens, I always get a CD for my car. I enjoy physical copies of albums more than digital, but having digital music is much more convenient.

I used to download songs until I got into Spotify. Now I never do. If I’m just casually listening to music then I’ll choose digital over CD because of the ability to pick different songs instead of listening to one artist.

We live in a day and age where we are constantly seeking entertainment. The same can be said with our workouts. Long and gone are the days of packing our gym bags, and heading to the local fitness club to march it out on the stair master. (If you’re one of these people, please don’t take offense.)We want to be addicted to our gym. We want to list off all of the reasons why our gym is better than yours. But with a million different workout routines to choose from, how do we know what’s right for us? Our answer: A combination class.

Combining multiple workouts into one class creates the variety your body craves. Instead of walking into the same workout every single day, classes like these provide a varied workout routine that changes with each class you attend. The overall flow of the class remains the same, but each individual activity changes, to keep your body from plateauing. With a high energy instructor, an electric atmosphere, and endorphins to last you all day, a combination class is exactly what we all need to make it through the work week. So, which types of exercise do we need to combine?

Barre I know what you’re thinking. Barre: an intimidating, girls only, sweat-free work out created by prima ballerinas. It’s true that this niche workout was created by professional dancers, but let’s clarify the other myths. Barre is a workout that exercises muscles you never knew you had. Tiny muscles that often get neglected with high intensity workout routines. Enhancing core strength, and elongating muscles are just two of the many benefits.

Incorporating small isometric movements, and low impact choreography, barre routines are great for beginners, professionals, guys, girls, and everyone in between. The only negative associated with barre is that it lacks the cardio so many of us crave.

Spin If you’re looking for an incredible cardio workout, look no further. With spin studios popping up all over the country, people are flocking to join the latest fitness phenomenon. These stationary bikes are a great way to relieve stress, and burn a ton of calories while doing so. For a more intense burn, simply crank the resistance dial to the right. For a great deal of us, when you find the right spin studio, some of the moves involved will allow you to be that incredible dancer that you always knew you were! Many spin studios incorporate choreography that makes the experience more fun and also allows the time to pass more quickly. We can assure you, it’s addicting.

Strength Training Most of us may feel intimidated by the thought of heading to a gym involving “strength training.” But the reality is, strength training can vary from heavy lifting, to lifting using a lighter set of weights and higher repetition. It’s essential for our work out, and both men and women can benefit from integrating this type of exercise into our routine. An added bonus: you don’t necessarily need weights to see results. You’ll often see full body pushups, plank holds, or “burpees” thrown into this style of exercise, none of which require additional weight. Strength training helps build endurance while boosting muscle mass. Using smaller weights also can potentially give you the toned-muscular physique versus the bulky look associated with heavier weights.

Luckily, you don’t need to make a decision about which gym to join.

Three15 is a fitness studio combining barre, spin and strength training exercises, all in one, hour-long class. The name says it all, three sets of 15-minute workouts for each exercise. The environment is welcoming, yet motivating, and the pace of the class keeps you from getting bored or underwhelmed. Each exercise can be modified to suit your specific needs. I Hate My Friend’s Boyfriend... >>> I have a friend who is in the worst relationship with her boyfriend. They have horrible fights. He’s a jerk, and she swears they’re breaking up after every fight. Of course they don’t, and then act all loveydovey the next day. It’s a constant hot-cold cycle. None of our friends like him, but we’re reluctant to tell her how we feel because we know she won’t break up with him, and we’ll be the ‘bad guys’ for having said something bad about him when they’re in their loveydovey stage. What should we do?

I am not sure this is a battle you want to fight.

If you have never said anything, you might want to gently tell her over a one-on-one “girls night out” dinner. Just let her know you have concerns, and other of her friends have mentioned they share those same concerns. She probably won’t break up with him, so be prepared! She may get angry or defensive. Be sure to practice those effective communication skills such as using “I” statements, and really knowing how to listen. That’s it! That’s ALL you can do! She’s a grown-up, and grown-ups get to make their own decisions...just like you! You don’t have to spend time with them, if you don’t like him.

You don’t have to listen to her break-up angst either, if you don’t want to! If she knows how everyone feels, and everyone stops spending time with them and listening to her relationship woes, she might begin to notice these negatives for herself. She might also decide to find a new group of friends. I just think people should be prepared for possible outcomes.

>>> My fiancé is addicted to Fantasy football. Last year, he held weekly Fantasy football meetings with his pals at our place. He was constantly on his phone trading players or strategizing at inappropriate times. After six months of constant football talk in my apartment, I almost ended our relationship.

I felt completely abandoned. How can I tell him this game is putting a strain on our relationship without sounding annoyed with something he loves to do?

Well, fantasy football, or any other type of fantasy sport, can be extremely fun! It can be engaging, exciting, as well as time-consuming, which can be the unfortunate side-effect of any hobby. You should not allow these things to overtake your life to the detriment of your significant other. No, a hobby should supplant or marginalize your partner. With that said, it is good to have a hobby and not be overly involved in your partner’s space. I think you have quite a number of choices in this. First, you can break up with him and move on, if you think this a behavior and pattern you can’t deal with in the long term. After all, this IS what dating is for! Remember... you shouldn’t expect that you can change people once you are married.

Your next option is to do nothing, and just deal with it, which may leave you with significant resentment. Not a good way to continue in a relationship. Maybe you could get involved, or even decide to participate! What if you even chose to join the league!!! This falls under, if you can’t beat them, join them! Could you imagine the look on his face if you won the league!!! You could find your own hobby! This could enrich your life, as well as help fill your time when he’s playing his fantasy football!

Individual time in any relationship is healthy, and, in many situations, necessary. If this is the option you choose, it might be a good idea to request that fantasy football be limited to those weekly meetings and when you aren’t together. Quality time isn’t usually spent completely NOT focused on your partner!

Homemade Pop-Tarts These are just as delicious as they are pretty.

Super simple, and great to make with kids!

Instructions (You can make the dough or you can buy pre-made pie crust.)

1. In food processor add your flour and sugar and pulse to combine.

Add your butter and pulse again until it comes together. Add your vanilla and slowly add water. Watch so that you do not overmix.

2. Roll your dough into a ball and chill for 20 minutes. Once chilled, sprinkle flour and roll out your dough to 1/4” inch thick.

3. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Cut dough into rectangles or your desired pop-tart shape and tart.

4. Spray baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray and cover with parchment paper.

5. Add 1-2 tablespoons of strawberry preserves to the center of each pop-tart and spread around. Cover with remaining dough rectangles, then press edges with a fork to seal.

6. Bake for about 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

7. While they bake, make your icing. Mix your powdered sugar and butter together. If it needs to be thicker, add more powdered sugar.

8. Remove pop-tarts and let them cool. Spread icing onto pop-tarts (once cooled) and top with rainbow sprinkles.

Ingredients- (You can make the dough or you can buy pre-made pie crust.)

1 jar Strawberry Preserves

·

2 1/2 Cups All-Purpose Flour, more for sprinkling

2 Tablespoons of Sugar

·

1 Cup Cold, Salted Butter cut into cubes

1/2 Cup Cold Water

·

1 Teaspoon Vanilla

Icing

·

1 Cup Powdered Sugar

·

1 Stick of Salted Butter

WORK Coordinator Recruitment at Children’s of Alabama CHARITY Hand in Paw

MOTOVATION As I began working at Children’s of Alabama, I noticed the animals in the lobby and wondered how they were allowed inside a hospital. I inquired for more information and learned about Hand in Paw and their Petscription Program. Shortly thereafter I got a puppy of my own and becoming a therapy team with Hand in Paw seemed like the logical next step.

We cherished our time as a therapy team, but Lula has since retired. My love for Hand in Paw hasn’t stopped, though. I am still actively involved on their Junior Board.

BEST OF BHAM Change. Birmingham is not the city it was when I was in high school. My perspective of Birmingham continues to change thanks to initiatives such as the Pizitz building, Regions Field, the Rotary Trail and the Zyp BikeShare program to name a few. It is exciting to see the impact my generation is having on the great city of Birmingham.

MOTOVATION Working with, and being around children has always made my heart happy. So when I had the opportunity to join the Mitchell’s Place Junior Council, it seemed like a natural fit.

Everyone involved with the organization has worked to create a safe and inviting space for the children to grow, dream, and learn. The biggest take away for me has been the education that I, myself, have received about Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is really eye opening to see just how many families are affected with the prevalence of 1 in 68 individuals receiving a diagnosis.

I am really proud to be a part of an organization where the teachers and staff are dedicated and committed to making sure every child and family is welcomed with open arms.

MOTOVATION I don’t think there is one person I know that hasn’t in some way been affected by cancer. Cancer doesn’t know – or care – about age, race, religion, or socioeconomic status. Not only did both of my grandmothers have breast cancer, but one of my closest friends had thyroid cancer in her twenties. It’s critical that we develop new cures and treatments to fight cancer. Raising money for the Steel City Soiree was such a great way to raise funds to go back into our community by supporting research to find these new cures and treatments. The money we raised also helped support the Hope Lodge, which is a place cancer patients and their caregivers can stay free of charge for as long as they need while they receive treatment.

BEST OF BHAM I love that there are so many young people in Birmingham that are passionate about giving back to our community and committed to supporting so many good causes.

MOTOVATION Both the Ballet and the Zoo touch and educate thousands of Alabamians a year. The Ballet’s “CityDance” program brings classical and modern dance instruction to children in the third, fourth, and fifth grade when their school might not have a dance program otherwise. As for the Zoo, if you’ve ever been there during the summer and seen fifteen school buses in the parking lot from all corners of Alabama, it’s clear that our state has a true educational gem here in Birmingham. Both of these causes are close to my heart and I’m grateful for the chance to support them.

I am continually inspired how we are able to enrich the lives of Birmingham’s veterans through physical and social activities with the help of so many civilians and veterans volunteering their time, energy, and resources. We have the privilege of working with Teams For Troops, Alabama Veteran, Still Serving Veterans, VETBHAM, and many more who do so much for our growing community.

BOILING N’ BRAGGING For the ninth straight year, the clubs of Rotary International District 6860 partnered with Children’s, Otey’s Tavern and Charter Spectrum to host a football kick-off party and low country boil. Guests enjoyed live music, $1 drink specials and kids’ activities. Entertainment was provided by Lance Taylor and Rockstar from WJOX’s Roundtable. Guests were encouraged to wear their favorite college football team colors. The event benefited the Critical Care Transport team at Children’s of Alabama, which works to meet the specific need of transporting more than 1,000 critically ill and injured children each year.

STEEL CITY SOIREE The inaugural Steel City Soiree was held at Old Car Heaven and benefited the American Cancer Society. A selection of Birmingham’s top professional men and women, Steel City Soiree recognized these ambassadors for their successes and continued contributions to their community. The evening was packed with dancing, entertainment, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and culminated in a presentation of ambassadors and honorees. The event showcased Birmingham’s finest restaurants, wines, spirits and brews to create an evening not to be forgotten.

A TOAST TO THE ARC Since 1953, The Arc of Jefferson County has touched the lives of thousands of families and continues to provide the best quality services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This event offered a unique opportunity to raise general operating funds, something The Arc desperately needs to continue to serve those who need it most. While The Arc is partially funded by Medicaid, critical supplies such as medicine, food and clothing are not covered. Each donation ensured that The Arc acquired the funds necessary to provide assistance for the hundreds of individuals they serve.

SIDEWALK FILM FESTIVAL The 19th annual Sidewalk Film Festival was a celebration of new independent cinema in downtown Birmingham. Since its debut in 1999, filmmakers from across the country and around the world have come to Birmingham to screen their work at Sidewalk and have been thrilled to discover fresh, enthusiastic crowds eager to devour new independent cinema. With multiple venues located within Birmingham’s historic Theatre District (featuring the fully restored Alabama Theatre, (a 2,200 seat movie palace built by Paramount in 1927), spontaneity ruled the schedule of Sidewalk attendees.

DANCING FOR FUTURE STARS The Ballroom at The Club was filled with glitz and glamour as Angela King, Ashley Watkins Umbach, Gage Smith, Ronnie Rice and Karim Shamsi-Basha took to the stage to perform individually choreographed routines in an exciting dance competition which benefited the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Alabama. Fabian Sanchez and Melanie Roberts from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio , who trained many of the dancers, served as partners in this festive and fun celebration along with Lorie Lee Flanegan of Champion Latin and Ballroom. Judges Jack Mann, John Mingle IV and Layla Hamilton were joined by special guest emcee, Javante Ingram of ABC 33/40.

THREE15 STUDIO GRAND OPENING Three15 is a new exercise studio in Homewood that combines spinning, barre and weights. The studio had a soft opening in June, but officially celebrated with their clients in August. Classes are offered every day of the week. Elements is a quality goods shop offering a combination of contemporary men and women’s apparel as well as locally made items.

Alongside its unique selection, Elements also harbors a fun, laid-back atmosphere featuring a hint of space-age meets antique-edgy. Check it out for yourself to see what we mean.

Mallory and her partner/co-owner, Johnnie Shaneyfelt, have been working on making their dream of Elements a reality for the past two years. “We used to run a stall at Urban Suburban,” Johnnie stated, “it was a great way to build our brand and gain some insight into what people wanted.”
