Downsize. And Raise Your Expectations. It’s more than simply buying and selling. It’s about finding a home that fits your individual lifestyle and selling your current home for the best price possible. If you’re looking to buy the perfect place, look no further. With our insight and market knowledge, we can find your ideal home so you can live life to the fullest and enjoy a lifestyle that exceeds your expectations. We make the process enjoyable and we take every aspect into consideration. Misty Joseph takes the time to truly understand what you’re looking for in a home. We listen before we start looking. Selling your home is equally as important. That’s why Misty Joseph does so much more than simply list your home. Instead, she provides the insight you need to get the most at closing. We can help you create value for the buyer, which means the highest possible selling price for you. For it’s not just about the listing. It’s about what happens before your home hits the market. It’s about assessing your home, staging it to the best advantage and addressing problems before they’re an issue for potential buyers. And the fewer issues your house presents to buyers, the sooner you sell and the better the price.

Let us put our experience to work for you.

ASK AN EXPERT

The real estate market in the Birmingham area is in a period of low inventory. Although prices are not necessarily being driven higher, houses are selling faster, meaning buyers have to move quickly in order to not lose a deal. What do homebuyers need to do to prepare for this market? One of the best things buyers can do to be competitive is to get a pre-approval letter from a lender. In order to do this, you’ll need to show proof of income, proof of assets, proof of identification and employment verification. A good credit score is also important. Having a pre-approval letter solidifies your offer and increases your chance of getting a house over someone who doesn’t have that pre-approval. Working with a partner who understands the market will help you get that house of your dreams. ABOUT

Mind, Body & Heart Wellness

All I Do is Worry! Writer, Speaker, Radio & Television Contributor, Dr. Misty Smith is the Founder and Managing Director of the Birmingham, Alabama based Mind, Body & Heart Wellness Clinic. She is an ASSECT Nationally recognized Certified Sex Therapist (CST), as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) of more than 15 years, who focuses on assisting individuals and couples to achieve their optimal emotional, relational, and sexual health through a resultsoriented counseling process tailored to the needs of the individual or couple. In addition to being ASSECT Certified, Dr. Misty has a PhD in Counselor Education from Mississippi State University and her EdS in Counseling from the University of Alabama. She can be reached by email at mistysmithphd@mbhwellnessclinic.com or mbhwellnessclinic.com.

>>> All I do is worry. Career. Friends. Boyfriend. Looks. etc. I know if I take a step back and assess my life logically, things aren’t so bad, and I know worrying won’t solve any problems. But worry infects my mind, and it consumes so much of life. How can I train or discipline my mind to stop worrying so much? The mind is a powerful thing! Therefore, the first thing you have to do is learn about your mind. The practice of mindful meditation really helps us understand what is going on in our minds when we aren’t directing our attention towards it. The American Heart Association defines meditation as the “family of mental practices that are designed to improve concentration, increase awareness of the present moment, and to familiarize a person with the nature of their own mind.” The AHA also suggests that practicing meditation regularly shows increased electrical activation in the brain and significantly increased gray-matter density in the part of the brain responsible for the autonomic nervous system and cardio respiratory regulation. These changes lead to improvements in emotion regulation and self motivation! Emotion regulation allows us to be more in tune with and more in control of the emotions within our minds and bodies. Everyone has an internal dialogue going on in their minds. I refer to this as a CD set on repeat playing in the back of your head.

We can have control of this, or we can let it control us. Many times that internal dialogue gets set on a negative playlist. When this happens, anxiety and depression can run rampant. Check out some “mindfulness meditation“ videos online. Begin the practice of starting every day with a 10 minute mindfulness meditation to set that internal dialogue for the day on a positive playlist!

>>> Our world seems to have become so sensitive. Everyone is offended, or scared of offending someone. People seem to be walking on eggshells as the ‘thought police’ look to turn everyone into an offender or offended. Where is our world headed when such deep divisions are being created out of the littlest things? Our world is definitely full of divisions! Divisions in religion. Divisions in politics. Divisions in parenting. Divisions in food choices. Divisions in language. I could go on and on! It is really easy for us to focus on how different everyone is and how different everyone’s views are. The truth though is that we are a country full of similarities! We are also a country full of individuals who strive to understand and appreciate differences. I believe the focus of the media is put on the divisions and the differences. They love to see chaos and disorder!

ABOUT

8 TOWN

Over the years they have trained us to desire that chaos and disorder! We have the power to focus on the good! We are the people who get to choose how things go in our future and the future of those who follow. One person turns into two turns into 10,000 turns into an infinite number of people who are accepting and understanding of the beautiful differences existing among us. This country was designed to be the land of the free. Freedom of speech. Freedom of religion. Freedom of thought! If we can all remember this, maybe we can all learn to accept one another’s differences and appreciate how colorful and unique they make this beautiful world! About Town has covered over 1,300 charity events in the last 13 years. Every issue revolves around the non-profits that have made our town the Magic City. If you didn’t know, Birmingham is consistently rated one of the most charitable cities in the country. œ So, we decided to ask our charity contacts to tell us who are some of the people that have given their time to help them. MOTIVATION When Olive was a puppy she showed me how an animal can demonstrate compassion, give comfort and show unconditional love to anyone willing to accept it. I witness this every time Olive walks into a hospital room, school or facility and I watch people’s eyes light up, their smile grow, and their worries shed. To spread joy and comfort and to give someone a moment to forget their situation is a gift that I hope Olive and I can keep giving for a very long time. BEST OF BHAM Birmingham has always been my home and I find it exciting how so many great restaurants, venues and stores are becoming pet friendly. AEL WORK Balch & Bingham LLP CHARITY The Bell Center

MOTIVATION I saw firsthand the transformative impact that The Bell Center has on the lives of children at risk for developmental delay when my son was a Bell Center student. When he started at The Bell Center, he was two years old and significantly speech delayed. The one-onone attention he received from The Bell Center’s dedicated clinical team, administrative staff, and volunteers laid the foundation for the incredible progress he has made over the past two years. His vocabulary and language skills have grown exponentially. My family owes a debt of gratitude for the support we received as a Bell Center family. In turn, I am proud to support the mission and efforts of The Bell Center as a member of its Junior Board and a member of the Major Gifts Committee for its “Right from the Start Capital Campaign,” raising funds for a new state-of-the-art, ADA compliant clinical facility in Homewood. BEST OF BHAM I am proud to be a part of a community that is committed to making Birmingham an exceptional place to live. From supporting its charities, like The Bell Center, to investing in local artists and its thriving food scene, Birmingham’s residents show up time and time again to make the Magic City a great place to live and work.

We believe in the power of giving back. We join About Town in recognizing our partner Adam Israel as a Trailblazer for his work with The Bell Center.

To be a part of an organization that not only is there for these amazing children during treatment, but is also there for them and their entire family throughout their cancer journey is life changing. I think I can speak for everyone who is involved with Smile-A-Mile when saying, Smile-A-Mile doesn’t just impact these resilient kids’ lives for the better, it changes all of our lives for the better.

BEST OF BHAM The ever-changing landscape. There is always something new and exiting going on in our city. Whether it be the BJCC Stadium project, UAB having a football team (again), Top Golf, or all the amazing restaurants and breweries, there is always something new that is helping revamp this wonderful city. My favorite part of the placements that I choose is helping children. I love kids and I believe they are the next generation. What we ingrain in them now will definitely determine our future. We have to be humble enough to help others, yet strong enough to lead.

There is always something to do for entertainment. A few of my favorite annual go-to events are Art on the Rocks and Harlem in the Ham. CHARITY United Way of Central Alabama

MOTIVATION Nothing brings me greater joy than to be able to help others in need. When I learned about United Way, their mission, and all the agencies and causes they support, I knew I had to get involved. BEST OF BHAM Birmingham has grown so much since I first moved to the area 17 years ago. The longer I live here, the more I fall in love with and appreciate the Magic City. Between all the arts, food, and events, there is always something to do.

CHARITY United Way of Central Alabama

MOTIVATION I have supported the United Way for a number of years and I believe they fund several organizations that do great things in Central Alabama. My wife has worked with two of their agencies that I am particularly fond of and I was presented with an opportunity to connect like-minded individuals in the community with United Ability through the Young Philanthropists Society at the United Way. BEST OF BHAM I love the Barons’, Avondale and Southside.

MOTIVATION I always knew that I wanted to be a part of a nonprofit organization and that I wanted to teach at a Montessori school. Working at Hilltop Montessori is a dream come true! My role as a Montessori preschool teacher is to instill a deep love of learning within each of my students. Being able to serve as a learning guide for these young minds makes my heart so full.

BEST OF BHAM I love all the beautiful and diverse nature that Birmingham has to offer! There are incredible parks and nature preserves everywhere you turn. I am always excited when I am able to incorporate Alabama’s biodiversity in the lessons that I teach within the classroom. As a 4-H Club volunteer, I am able to use my love of nature and the outdoors to teach and encourage the children at Hilltop!

MOTIVATION My brother, Neal, was born with a disability that, at the time, was very rare. There were only two others like him in Alabama. Because I am no longer in the same town as Neal, I look for ways to get involved and give back to those who are in need. I’ve had the pleasure to serve on the Junior Board for United Ability for the past three years. United Ability provides resources to individuals such as Neal and to those with other disabilities. MOTIVATION I have the honor of working with multiple Birmingham nonprofits who are making a difference in lives daily through Community First, the charitable giving arm of AmFirst, where employees vote on and fundraise for 3 different nonprofit organizations each year. This year we are supporting Laura Crandall Brown Foundation, Greater Birmingham Humane Society and Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Alabama. Community First has helped 12 local charities, raising $278,000, over the last four years. KER WORK Farris, Riley & Pitt CHARITY Childcare Resources

MOTIVATION I’ve always enjoyed helping people see their full potential, which aligns with Childcare Resources’ mission to make quality care and education of children happen by providing information, education, and assistance to families, providers of child care, and the community. Quality brain development in the first three years of life can have a positive impact on a child’s future and ultimately on our community. Additionally, if children are in a safe, nourishing environment, this alleviates stress from mothers, further enabling them to succeed in their professional lives. BEST OF BHAM We have access to great hiking trails and beautiful parks, which are always filled with events from yoga to art festivals. Plus, I love that our city is growing with unique rooftop bars and restaurant patios, offering us plenty of places to enjoy the sunshine.

WORK Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe CHARITY The Exceptional Foundation

MOTOVATION I first got involved with The Exceptional Foundation to help organize and plan its Inaugural Chili Cook-Off fundraiser, which will celebrate its fifteenth anniversary next year. What has kept me involved is that The Exceptional Foundation is truly one of the happiest places on earth. The participants have such a genuine joy for life, and that joy is always on display thanks in many ways to the opportunities the Foundation provides.

BEST OF BHAM I think Birmingham combines the positive elements of a smaller community with the economic and other opportunities of a larger city. My favorite part of Birmingham is the variety of entertainment and cultural activities and how passionately local businesses and individuals support the events, teams, and organizations in our community.
