WHAT ARE SOME GOOD LATE NIGHT SPOTS IN TOWN?

How late are we talking? Midnight, or well into the A.M.? Check out our feature Birmingham All Night. We list a few. Collins Bar around 11ish usually pretty good, but from there it kind of depends on how crazy your feeling. One place we didn’t mention, but it can fun with a crowd, is Bourbon Street Karaoke over by the Jimmie Hale between Crestwood Ave. and Montclair Rd. It’s one of these places that was clearly a Pizza Hut in the day. You know how you don’t have to be an architect to spot the places that were obviously a Pizza Hut or Taco Bell? Anyway, they’re not afraid to keep it rolling into the wee-wee hours.

And a place with no windows always adds to the appeal!

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING UAB HOOPS We wrote last year about the then-upcoming Blazer basketball season, and how the season would unfold. UAB repeated as C-USA champions, and were on the bubble for the Tourney, but had to settle for the NIT. Jerod Haase has moved on to Stanford, and been replaced by his assistant Robert Ehsan, who has been at UAB for the last five years. The Blazers have been selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference again, and they return four starters from a 2015-16 squad that had a 16-2 record in league play. A 16-0 record inside Bartow Arena is impressive, and proof of the great atmosphere in the arena. We said it last year - it would be great if the powers that be would make an investment in UAB basketball. They can consistently be good, and they can have a relatively consistent presence in the NCAA Tourney. C-USA may not be the most exciting conference, but their out-of-league schedule is legit - including Memphis, Kansas and Texas (unfortunately, all away). But credit Auburn for coming to Bartow for what should be a great crowd.

Not sure why Alabama doesn’t schedule a yearly rivalry. And bringing in more SEC teams to town would only increase interest.

ON VINYL CANNONBALL ADDERLEY QUINTET The Price You Got To Pay To Be Free

With a nickname derived from his voracious appetite (cannibal) Cannonball Adderley was one of the great alto saxophonists. Playing with Ray Charles and Miles Davis, Adderley created a sound a bit more accessible than some of the other jazz greats. The Price You Got To Pay is such a cool record, and is made even better because it’s double disks. It was captured live (1970) when his hard bop and modal jazz chops were being merged into the avant garde.

An incredibly diverse album, he explores Brazilian beats, traditional soul, and what would become funk. Adderley’s musical generosity shares the stage not only with Joe Zawinul’s amazing keys, but also his 15-year-old nephew Nat Jr. in the political title track. A great jazz record that has something for everyone.

It caused a huge scene to see so much blood in a restaurant. He disappeared into the bathroom for the rest of the night as I sat alone.

Then I finally was able to drag him out of my house and had to basically push him out before he had time to kiss me. He made the stereotype of home-schooled kids seem all the more real. That was the last date we had, naturally.

Chateau Ducasse Bordeaux Blanc $14.99 A blend of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle from limestone vineyards in Bordeaux. This wine is aged in stainless steel for 6 months to preserve its fresh citrus flavors. A beautiful wine for drinking by itself or to have with a salad or shellfish.

Z Alexander Brown Cabernet Sauvignon $14.99 This Cab displays notes of black cherry and mocha. The wine is supple, bold, and rich. The grapes are sourced from the North Coast AVA, which allows this wine to be an amazing value. Did I mention this wine was made by Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band? Try this bold red with burgers or grilled meats.

Cline Viognier $11.99 Aromas of honeyed peaches and fruit salad spill from the glass.This wine is golden yellow in color and has medium body.The taste is of peaches, citrus, and stone fruit.

Smooth finish with just a touch of acidity. A great porchsipping wine, but will also go with grilled fish or lobster.

Argiolas Perdera $14.99 This wine comes from Sardinia and the little-known Monica grape. This grape is grown widely on the island and makes a wine of superb drinkability and fruitforward nature. Perdera means "place of many stones" and is the name of the vineyard. This wine works great with seared tuna or salmon.

Rioja Bordon Rioja Crianza $13.99 A Bordeaux family and a Spanish family came together to make these wines. Rioja is one of the best places on the planet to grow Tempranillo. The wine spends 12 months in American oak barrels, and this gives it some classic coconut notes. It also has notes of red fruit and displays elegant tannins. Great with grilled foods, pasta, or fried foods.

True Myth Chardonnay $13.99 These grapes hail from Edna Valley in California. This cool climate allows the Chardonnay grapes to fully ripen.

This wine has aromas of pear, white peach, and wet stone.

Great mouthfeel and a minerally finish. Great wine with white fish or roast chicken.

Botanical Gardens

Avon Theater Avon Theater is located in the heart of the Lakeview District of Southside and controlled by Red Mountain Church. It is minutes away from the pulse of Birmingham’s great downtown attractions. The venue has exposed brick, high ceilings and a built-in stage. It also has adjustable lighting and an open floor plan and can seat up to 250 people.

Convenietly located with a lot of versatility, The Gardens has 5 different event spaces. Strange Auditorium is the Gardens’ most versatile room. It has an adjoining full kitchen, a prep room, and the private Rushton Garden is just outside. Hodges Room is useful for small- to medium-sized meetings and activities.

If It’s Colder Weather...

It’s Time for the Brown

Cooler weather means it’s time to take a break from the rums, tequillas, etc. and get back into the comfort zone that only a bourbon can satisfy. We’ve put together a few of our favorite fall and winter cocktails that complement the cooler temperatures.

Boulevardier

Manhattan

- 1.5 oz Old Forester - 1 oz Campari - 1 oz sweet vermouth

- 2 oz Rye Jack Daniels Single Barrel Tennessee Rye - 1 oz sweet vermouth, preferably Carpano Antica - 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice. Stir.

Strain over ice and garnish with an orange peel.

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice. Stir. Strain. Serve neat with a brandied cherry.

Old Fashioned

- 2 oz Old Forester - 1 tsp 1:1 simple syrup - 2 dashes Regan’s Orange Bitters Combine ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice. Stir. Strain over ice and garnish with an orange peel.

The Difference Between Bourbon and Rye Rye whiskey is, by law, made from a mash of at least 51% rye. The other ingredients of the mash are usually corn and malted barley. Bourbon, distilled from at least 51% corn, is noticeably sweeter, and tends to be fuller-bodied than rye.

Sazerac

- 2 oz Rye Jack Daniels Single Barrel Tennessee Rye - 0.25 oz 1:1 simple syrup - 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters - 0.25 oz of Herbsaint or Absinthe Rinse a chilled cocktail glass with the Herbsaint/ Absinthe and set aside. Combine remaining ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice. Stir. Strain into the chilled glass, neat. Express a lemon peel over the drink and run the peel around the rim of the glass. Discard the peel.

Whiskey Sour -

2 oz Coopers Craft Bourbon 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice 1 egg white 3 dashes Peychaud’s bitters

Combine the first four ingredients in a shaker tin, adding the egg white last. Without adding ice, shake briskly for 10 seconds. Add ice and shake again. Finely strain into a cocktail glass, neat. Add the 3 dashes of bitters.

Food Truck Round Up Food trucks can actually trace their origins back before the car. As the chuck wagon in the American frontier was the precursor to what we recognize today. Funny enough, Oscar Meyer was one of the first modern food trucks out there, called the The Weinermobile. In Birmingham, they seem to be a fresh, new, and vastly popular trend. They’ve been in the Iron City for about four years now, but this may be their golden year. With food truck festivals, rallies in downtown Birmingham, and their loyal presence at Pepper Place Farmers Market Saturday Mornings, these four wheeled machines are becoming more and more popular.

“I believe that due to the pent up demand among buyers and sellers, the housing market will continue to flourish. I also think that due to the continued increase of monthly rental rates, buyers will see the wisdom of home ownership vs renting for the same amount. In today’s market sellers are open to paying a percentage of the buyer’s closing costs and mortgage companies has several 97 and 100 percent down payment options available to anyone who qualifies. Interest rates on the other hand will probably go up at some point in the coming year due to the length of time they have been at record lows but that increase may be minimal. Owens Hudson Salon started with a dream.

We wanted to bring a fresh and new look to the hair styling industry. Our goal is to create comfortable, pleasurable, and memorable experiences with our hairstyling family. We as a team strive to provide each guest with services of our fullest potential.

What are the latest trends in hair color?

I would say fashion colors- balayage and ombre. We have seen a ton of “Lobs” (long bobs) in fashion lately.

What are some of the mistakes people make in their style?

Often people make the mistake of picking a new style or trend by choosing images of people who do not have the same features or hair texture. It is important to pick something that will bring out your best features.

I’ve heard dying your hair with store brand dyes is bad for your hair. Is this true?

There can be a lot of cons to “at home” hair color. The make-up of the home hair color may not always give the desired look as well as a formulated professional color.

What’s the piece advice you find yourself giving the most?

Helping people prepare for “at home care” with the correct products and tools.

What are some of your favorite/most recommended products?

We are huge fans of Bumble and Bumble and Aveda products. They both offer many different options and help cater to many different styles and hair textures.

Being able to inspire others is a great achievement, but we strive to create a wonderful environment for our guests as well as our team that we work with every day.

How important is the client/stylist relationship to you?

Client relationships are everything. Much of our clientele feel more like family to us than business, and that makes a long day feel more rewarding.

If someone is dissatisfied with their current look what would you recommend?

Don’t be afraid to try something new. We always recommend imaging when trying to create a new look. Typically, we would prefer to see several different ideas to help someone customize a style that works best for them.

BirminghAall Nmight ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS about our job, and our office specifically, is that you can go out our back door and walk straight into Ovenbird. And when weather is nice, the sun is setting, and their doors are open, it's one of the best places to grab a bite, a cocktail and get the night going.

Everyone has their own preferences on their favorite places, so we decided to put together our own guide for the people new to town or who wants to try something new.

GETTING GOING Casual or more refined? Maybe a little of both? Parkside in Avondale

I'M HUNGRY

is the perfect balance, and the indoor and outdoor seating across from the Park is awesome. Casual? Or you work downtown? Paramount downtown is great and even more enjoyable with the garage doors open. Paramount is known for its iconic arcade/bar, as well as its “grub.” Just watch the Hit the Decks, or you may hit the deck on the skee ball machine. Parking isn’t ideal, but who’s complaining, you’re downtown. Something a bit more refined? Bottega Café is still a Birmingham institution. Indoor or outdoor seating works well to enjoy an app and a glass of wine. And it's still one of the few places that actually has a higher girl to guy ratio. We mentioned Ovenbird above. What can we say? We’re biased. They’re our neighbors.

So a few places that are certainly no secrets, but relatively new. El Barrio, which led the pack to bring attention to 2nd Ave North, is always on a wait. Priced right, great atmosphere, good Mexican food and great margaritas are an easy formula for success. Across the street is Bamboo on 2nd. Yes, there will probably be a wait there as well. Bamboo is as much of a scene as it is a food destination. Its Asian-fusion menu is preppy-man's version of Siagon Noodle House on 280. Having some killer Japanese beers on tap and a good selection of sake is never a bad thing. In Avondale, Fancy's on 5th (named after the famed historical elephant that used to reside across the street in Avondale Park) has been a huge hit. Its surf and turf selection features a good oyster selection coupled with great burgers.

PLAY SOME SKYNYRD !

We can’t pretend to represent everyone’s taste in music. So how about we mention some venues that are worth checking out to see who’s playing there? Usually if you’re just wanting to be in bar and have some good live music in the background. The Oasis in Lakeview is still worth recommending. In Avondale, Saturn is doing their best to fill the void left after The Bottletree closed a year or so ago. They do a good job of recognizing new talent as well as anyone in town. The Nick is another Bham institution with its hard driving tunes filtered through its dingy surroundings that you may not want to see with all the lights on. Over by UAB, the Syndicate Lounge has a decidedly younger hipster feel. No frills, reasonable cover charge, pool tables, and great sound.

LAST CALL Nothing good happens after midnight is a saying I just don't agree with.

Can't quite call it a night yet? The Collins Bar, open until 2 am on the weekends, is a favorite that always seems to be busier later than earlier.

Their mixologists create custom cocktails based on the adult beverage of your choice. If 2 am is too early, try The Nick, Birmingham’s Dirty Little Secret. They're open until 4. If 4 am is too early, head over to Marty's PM. A fixture near 5 Pts. forever, they closed a few years ago, but fortunately reopened and reassumed their place as the spot for the ragers. They're open until 6 am. If you still want more you need help.

WHERE ARE YOU THINKING? The big three areas right now are pretty much 2nd Ave North, Avondale and Lakeview. 2nd Ave North seems to be the most adult. That may be a bad description. It's a dinner crowd first and a drinking crowd second, and has the fewest choices of the three. Paramount, Collins, El Barrio, Pale Eddie's, Rogue and Bamboo on 2nd are its residents. In Avondale, The Wooden Goat is now closed (oddly), but food spots aren't hard to find. Fancy's on 5th, Hot Box (behind Parkside), Taco Morro Loco, Wasabi Juan's, Hot Diggity Dogs, and Saw's still serve it up. 41st Street Pub & Aircraft Sales can be hit or miss. We've been in there and it's slammed, and been in there and it's dead. Their Moscow Mules are worth checking out the crowd. The future box-car retail going in where the old Star Hotel was will be very interesting, and it could take that area to another level. The Marble Ring is above Fancy's and is an old-school speakeasy, and on a side note, we have to admit we love their approach to social media exposure.

Space is limited and it can be tough to get into on the weekends. That leaves Lakeview, which has the most history as Innis Free has anchored that area for a while. Cashio's Meatball Market is new, and is kind of 2001: A Space Odessey meets haute couture. They specialize in Italian comfort food. Babalu is located on the corner and has quickly become a popular staple to the area. Hattie B's and Skycastle are the newbies.

My advice for brides looking for the perfect beach or destination look is to choose what you want! I absolutely hate when brides try to select a gown solely because they think it looks like their venue - and that includes beach and destination weddings.

Choose the gown you love and it will work in whatever venue you select. My favorite beach look is actually a ball gown, which is totally different than what most people expect for the beach! We also had a bride who did a five foot train on the beach - the pictures were phenomenal!

In recent months, we have had a lot of brides asking for blushers after Kim K’s wedding to Kanye. Before Kim wore it, girls weren’t loving the blusher idea in our shop. We know we will be hearing from a lot of girls who want to look similar to the new Mrs. Clooney since the recent wedding of the most famous bachelors in our country!
