THE SHACK is where our story starts. This 998 square foot, bare bones, structure was the first at the Mockingbird Distillery. Tito built it himself (with a little help from his friends) to house his entire vodka making operation — from planning to distilling, from taste-testing to bottling up the final product. Since then, Tito’s Handmade Vodka has outgrown the Shack, but the small, dusty blue building still sits at the center of the distillery. There, you’ll find Tito’s office, and a whole lot of memories from way back in the day.

SEASONS OF LIFE Claiming a Fit and Healthy Routine
Some of what you’ll find on
by: Leslie Dobbins
abouttown.io
I
DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, but I always find the changing of seasons from summer to fall to be an exciting time. After all, fall is home to many celebrations and holidays, along with bonfires, football games, and so much more! However, this fall, I have gone through a personal loss that has been very difficult for me. My precious father, Dr. Jerome Fiorella, passed away after a courageous battle against a malignant brain tumor, which he fought for the past year and a half. As the seasons have changed this year, I have reflected more on seasons of life. Life has many exciting seasons, such as growth, discovery, and adventure. It also unfortunately has some seasons that are more difficult emotionally, such as loss, grief, and unwelcome change. It’s easy to stay on track with your personal health & wellness goals when you’re experiencing a positive, exciting season of life. It’s harder when you’re grieving a loss or learning how to deal with unwelcome change.
Watch lifestyle, local and behind-the-scenes videos. See ALL the party pics.
I’m trying my best to learn what I can from my current season of loss, while still honoring my very special dad, whom I miss immensely. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you need to give yourself grace and time to grieve. It’s okay to take a break from your physical habits, such as diet regimen and exercise routine, and focus on your emotional well-being. Eventually, coming back to those habits will improve your emotional and mental state, but it’s perfectly fine to take a break to grieve whatever or whoever you may have lost. Lean on those in your life who love you while you focus on your emotional recovery. Whole Foods and the gym will be happy to welcome you with open arms once you are ready to resume your regular routine! Another important lesson I’ve learned is that I need to remember that my father loved me dearly and would not want me to be sad constantly or develop habits detrimental to my health. I have to admit that I struggle with survivor’s guilt. Reminding myself that one of the best ways to honor him is by living the positive, healthy life he would want for me has been an uplifting and empowering mindset to hold on to.

Life changes are as inevitable as the changing of the seasons in nature. When we deal with difficult situations in life, it’s important to remember that our season of life will again change in due time. I encourage each of you to not only take care of your emotional well-being, but also continue to implement healthy habits, no matter your season of life. I truly hope you all enjoy the cooler weather and opportunities to spend quality time with friends and family that this fall will bring!
And, all things social.

What is Dolphin Skin? Dr. Holly Gunn fills us in on this hot new trend. @ maryphillips
< It seems like every day there is a new beauty-related hashtag on Instagram, but one that seems to have staying power is #dolphinskin – a term popularized by celebrity makeup artist Mary Phillips, who has worked with the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and Jennifer Lopez, and Hailey Bieber (left).
> HOW TO GET DOLPHIN SKIN The number one key to getting dolphin skin is taking fantastic care of your skin, glowing from within, if you will. Dolphin skin is just as much if not more about skincare than it is about makeup application. Consulting doctors like Gunn Dermatology about how to shine without even needing makeup is the perfect first step to achieving the look.
> IT’S NOT COMPLICATED, DOCTORS SAY You want to optimize the rate of cellular turnover in your skin so you can not just look healthy and hydrated, but actually be healthy and hydrated. Cellular turnover, by the way, is a critical component to radiant skin. Consider exfoliation, which stimulates cell turnover – but before you do anything, consult a dermatologist like those at Gunn Dermatology.
> WHAT IS DOLPHIN SKIN? Summon a picture in your mind of the friendly aquatic animal. What do you see? If you answered smooth, wet, plump, and reflective skin, that is exactly what the phenomenon of dolphin skin is going for. #dolphinskin has taken on a life of its own, meant to be used to describe a glistening, luminous, fresh out of the water makeup look, Phillips told beauty Bible Allure. This look – hydrated, dewy, radiant skin – has always been Philipps’ aesthetic, she said (and one that Gunn Dermatology can help you achieve).
> NEVER FORGET YOUR SPF Protecting your skin with SPF daily is an absolute must when trying to achieve the dolphin skin look. You should stick to a minimum of SPF 30.
> AND GET YOUR SLEEP We’ll say it again: The most beautiful skin comes from the inside out – what you put into your body and how you nourish yourself, through food, water, and especially sleep. You will be hard pressed to achieve the dolphin skin look if you are ragged, tired, and exhausted, running on too little sleep.
> “YOUR SKIN – BUT BETTER” The great news about dolphin skin is that it’s very achievable, even if you’re not Kim or Kendall or Jennifer or have a professional makeup artist like Mary Phillips on hand. We’ve heard dolphin skin described as “your skin – but better,” meaning at the core of this trend is really just you, but with extra attention paid to perfecting your skin so that it glows.
For more information about any of these treatments, contact Dr. Holly Gunn at Gunn Dermatology for a consultation. 32 Church Street, Mountain Brook 35213 205-415-7536.
> NEXT STEPS After you achieve the basics of great skincare, make sure you prep your skin well through hydration and moisture. Because the whole point of dolphin skin is to look dewy, you can’t overdo hydration and moisture in your prep routine! From there, apply your base, being careful to avoid any mattes. Stick with dewy foundations, since this trend is all about enhancing your skin rather than slathering makeup over it. Key products to use while achieving the dolphin skin look include a good blush to add color back in, and a cream highlighter before finishing off the look with a loose setting powder. Make sure to hydrate, blend, and add powder where needed – all the while remembering that true dolphin skin is not based off of makeup, but fantastic skincare.

What You Need To Know About Dental Implants & Fixed Bridges Dr. Koch can help determine which option is right for you. by: Dr. Paul Koch at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry
Everyone wants to look their best, and as we age some things add years to our appearance. However, a visit to your cosmetic dentist can help in reversing those signs of aging with just a few safe and effective treatments. Dr. Paul Koch of Koch Aesthetic Dentistry gives his tips on ways to look your best. If you have questions visit kochaesthetics.com or call 205-933-0323.
It may come as a surprise, but tooth loss is actually quite common. Nearly 69 percent of adults lose at least one adult tooth between the ages of 35 and 44, and, by the time they reach 74, nearly 25 percent of Americans will lose all their teeth. Thankfully, we live in a modern age where places like Koch Aesthetic Dentistry offers a myriad of options and a plethora of dental advancements to address lost teeth. The two most popular options for lost tooth replacement are dental implants and fixed bridges.
WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS? The support structure of a tooth includes bone, ligaments, gums, and nerves. When you lose a tooth, these all atrophy and are lost, and the surrounding areas deteriorate. It is important to remember that the teeth and bone give your face its shape, and losing them ages a person very quickly. A dental implant replaces the visible, above the gum portion of the tooth and recreates the foundation with an “artificial tooth root”, either made from titanium or a ceramic.
HOW DOES A DENTAL IMPLANT WORK? Your dentist will place the implant in the jawbone first. After a couple of months, the bone surrounding the implant should grow around the implanted “root”, and your dentist will place a crown on top of it. Dental implants are a popular option because they can promote the healing of bone structure and gums surrounding the lost tooth. It is the only way to preserve the bone.
WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS? The pros: -They can last 15 years or more. - They will retain a natural appearance longer than bridges. - They will not damage healthy teeth around the implant. - They will promote bone regeneration and strengthen the area underneath the missing tooth. - They will not decay. - A person can brush and floss them easily. - They can look very natural. The cons: - Dental implants are not likely to be covered by insurance. - There is a lengthy installment process that can take up to six months. - They are more expensive than bridges. - They may lead to surgical complications.
WHAT IS A FIXED BRIDGE? A fixed dental bridge attaches to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap where the missing tooth once was. Ordinarily, the two teeth on either side of the gap are shaved down, and a bridge is cemented into place, using the two shaved down teeth as supports. The bridge consists of two crowns placed on shaved down teeth and a crown that is attached to them and placed in the gap. Depending on your particular circumstances, Dr. Koch may place a Maryland bridge to cover the gap (only in the front of your mouth), which is a winged bridge embedded into the neighboring teeth instead of fully capping them.
WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF A FIXED BRIDGE? The pros: - They are most likely covered by insurance. - They do not require bone grafting or invasive surgery. - There is a lower cost. - Installation is usually done in two visits a few weeks apart. The cons: - They have to be replaced every five to seven years. - With age, they lose their natural appearance. - They cause more cavities and tooth decay in surrounding teeth than dental implants. - They could damage the healthy teeth surrounding the missing tooth. - They may cause the loss of one or more of the adjacent teeth.
WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME? Dr. Koch will advise you on which option might be best for you, looking at points like cost, number of missing teeth, time, and your overall health. If you have any questions, Dr. Koch is always here to help you. Replacing a lost tooth is necessary for both your oral health and for aesthetic purposes. Contact us today to learn more about dental implants and fixed bridges.

Fit Five’s
6 Tips To A Healthier
You
The Birmingham company offers healthy and affordable prepped meals across Alabama.
Fit Five founders and owners Paul Shunnarah and Brock Warren – both Birmingham natives – grew up knowing one another and both had deep backgrounds in health and wellness, specifically in the fitness space. Shunnarah and Warren, both longtime entrepreneurs, knew that working out was important, but it also mattered how their clients ate – and, after research, found that nowhere else in Alabama was offering an easy way for customers to choose healthy meals, select a pickup location, pick the meals up, and enjoy them. Meal prep takes ample time – as anyone who has tried to do this for themselves knows – and Fit Five was founded to be Alabama’s healthy and affordable prepped meal company, making eating right easier than ever. “We put a plan in place, and four years later, here we are,” Shunnarah said. Some of Shunnarah’s favorites? All of the bowls, he said, like the beefy Birmingham & Bison bowl, French toast, shrimp ‘n grits, five bites, and pork and greens – which are delicious and health-conscious, as well, proving that you don’t have to compromise taste and flavor for healthy and nutritious meals.

> Get started now. Most people overthink being healthy and, in turn, procrastinate making the change. > Make small changes weekly instead of overhauling your lifestyle overnight.
And, in addition to helping Alabama get healthy, the Fit Five team supports its native Birmingham by relentlessly giving back through its Fit Five Cares program. This program delivers free food to those in need like families that lost their jobs or houses during a tornado, nurses, doctors, and other first responders, and the homeless.
> Plan, plan, plan. Set yourself up for success. Meal prep at home or use a company like Fit Five. > Find a partner, friend, or family member to do this with. Having someone along on the journey is super helpful and will keep you motivated.
5 6
“Being Birmingham natives, we have seen the transformation Birmingham has gone through over the years,” Shunnarah said. “As individuals that want to see change, we have been a part of several different programs throughout COVID and our inception of delivering free food to those in need.”
> Don’t quit or get discouraged. Many people quit before they can see the results. It takes time, so be patient and stay on track.
And, speaking of change, if you’re looking to get healthier, in addition to signing up for Fit Five, check out some of their top tips from their team to help you begin your journey.
> Don’t let the scale fool you. Many will let the scale determine success. When people first get back in the gym, they replace fat with muscle, so the scale lies to them. Don’t let that be you!

The Lyas family in Vestavia Hills transformed their home from good to great.
TRANSFORMATION – although not always easy – is beautiful. Just ask the Lyas family, who renovated their Vestavia Hills home three years ago with the help of architect Chris Reebals of Christopher Architecture and Interiors. “We want to encourage others who may be on their renovation journey or on their life journey in general,” said Kendra Lyas, who spoke exclusively to About Town about her home’s renovation. “Overall, we want our story to illustrate that something beautiful can come from something broken. Our ultimate goal in sharing our story is not to bring attention to ourselves or the house, but rather for others to feel helped, motivated, and encouraged.”

he Lyas family, Christopher Architecture and Interiors, and his team began renovations in the summer of 2018. “We learned that the process is a lot more involved than what HGTV shows,” Lyas said with a smile. Although the family’s home sits on Vestavia Country Club’s golf course, the original design of the home didn’t take advantage of the Club’s magnificent views. The team at Christopher Architecture and Interiors put together blueprints and planned for the home to be completely gutted and rebuilt. During the process, the family of four and their Australian labradoodle, Buddy, moved into a two-bedroom apartment before the home was completed in April 2019. Once the architecture was complete, it was time for the interior design component. Lyas’ style, she said, is very minimalistic, and the home’s aesthetic reflects that. “I enjoy casual, effortless, California style with farmhouse touches, while Reggie [my husband] leans more towards both industrial and transitional styles,” she said. “The Christopher Architecture and Interiors team was able to achieve the perfect balance for us. Bright, sunny spaces were a must, and we wanted to incorporate neutral tones to create costal vibes. We asked Christopher Architecture and Interiors to add plenty of windows and transoms since natural light instantly makes a space more welcoming.” The interiors team brought the outdoors in, Lyas said, with a natural color palette of tans, whites, beiges, black, and wood. “This set the tone for the décor,” she said. Her husband Reggie’s requests for bold, industrial architectural influences brought the right blend of raw and refined materials. “The combination of reclaimed beams, brick walls, concrete countertops, metal fixtures, and steel doors and windows create a strong statement as you enter the home,” Lyas said. “The Christopher Architecture and Interiors team, led by Joanna Goodman, paired modern and vintage elements seamlessly to create an environment filled with character.”
ABOUT
Pulling into the driveway of the home, visitors are instantly enchanted by the serene view of the golf course behind the home, where golfers amble toward their next hole and the green landscape is a delight to take in. Walking up the front steps and catching a glimpse of the exterior façade is also a feast for the eye. No detail was missed in making this home spectacular. The original entryway to the home, Lyas said, consisted of an outdated spiral staircase and an elevator. The outdated spiral staircase was totally demolished and replaced with a modern wrap-around staircase and handcrafted iron railing. “The ‘ancient’ and somewhat spooky elevator was removed from the shaft, and closets were created in its place,” Lyas said.
A unique acrylic ball chair and plush accessories provide the perfect aesthetic for a teenage girl’s room.

Keeping with the Lyas’ California minimalist vibe, the dining room of the home is light, airy, and open.
The floorplan of the home is open and airy, with high ceilings and décor with a muted color palette, reflecting Lyas’ minimalist, understated style. One of the highlights of the home’s first floor is its sunroom, which once again highlights their lush backyard – the well-manicured, well-maintained greens of the Vestavia Country Club’s golf course. “Our family wanted to create a sunroom that would maximize our views of the golf course and create a space to entertain,” Lyas said. The existing sunporch was spacious, Lyas said, but, in her words, lacked aesthetically. Christopher Architecture and Interiors ordered that the existing sunporch be completely demolished, and the team designed a brand new sunroom that featured stunning floor to ceiling windows and a pecky cypress ceiling in its place. The new sunroom is now Lyas’ favorite room in the entire home. “This room has revolutionized the way I have quiet time every morning,” she said. “Overlooking nature, I feel calm and one with nature every day.” In the Lyas home, rooms move seamlessly from one room to the next, so, just a few steps off of the sunroom is the open kitchen, with an island that any homeowner would dream of. The kitchen follows the rest of the home’s pattern of a muted color palette and, as you enter the home, is set off to the right of the spacious living room instead of its original location in the center of the house. The laundry room has ample space to get the job done, making even the most mundane chore more enjoyable.
“The original kitchen was in the center of the house, which obstructed the flow of the main level,” Lyas said. “During the renovation, the kitchen and great room locations were swapped.” The new kitchen in the Lyas home features crisp white cabinets, honed marble countertops, a glazed handmade subway tile backsplash, and a custom hood. It is the type of kitchen you might find in Architectural Digest or House Beautiful. The first room you encounter when you enter the front door of the Lyas home is the great room, which is a combination of being both lived-in and perfectly appointed. “Our family wanted a great room that was comfy while playing games, reading, or having movie nights,” Lyas said. “The new great room includes antique oak floors, beams, a natural stone fireplace, and an oversized modular sofa.” Inside the first floor of the Lyas home, a visitor has the benefit of feeling as though they are outside – with the sun shining in from every corner – without having to deal with the elements of actually being outside. But, as the temperatures begin to drop from the oppressive summer heat and as it begins to feel more and more like autumn outdoors, right off of the great room of the Lyas home is the main terrace, complete with a fire pit for roasting s’mores and, as cooler winter temperatures approach, warming oneself by the fire while enjoying the backyard views. “Reggie and I both love to entertain, so we needed an outdoor space with easy transition to the indoors,” Lyas said. “Two terraces were created on the property – the main terrace and a smaller terrace off the master bedroom. The main terrace, now furnished with a large fire put, teak patio furniture, and a high-top table and chairs, provides the perfect, cozy outdoor atmosphere for our casual get togethers.” The main terrace provides the perfect atmosphere for not only entertaining with friends, laughing and enjoying one another over the fire pit, but also for making family memories. Back inside the home, walking through the great room and the kitchen, towards the front of the home is the spacious, well-apportioned laundry room, which, like the rest of the home, follows a crisp, clean, white color palette. Whereas Lyas said the original laundry room had zero counter space, that is the opposite of the renovated laundry room, which is roomy, airy, and expansive – so peaceful, in fact, that one might actually look forward to doing the sometimes arduous task of laundry. “The new laundry room was designed with black soapstone countertops, pull out hampers, shiplap walls, and custom vintage tile floors,” Lyas said. “This new atmosphere makes doing laundry much less of a chore!” Remaining on the first floor, down the hallway you’ll find the gorgeous master bedroom with an attached bathroom that rivals any we’ve seen before. Off of the master bedroom is the aforementioned smaller terrace; one can imagine raising the blinds in the master bedroom in the morning, taking in those breathtaking backyard views of the Vestavia Country Club golf course, and stepping outside onto the smaller terrace for a cup of coffee and a few deep breaths before beginning the day. The smaller terrace, like the rest of the Lyas home, is completely peaceful. Upstairs now are the bedrooms of the Lyas children, each with their own bathroom attached. “The Christopher Architecture and Interiors team created two equal sized rooms for the Lyas kiddos,” Lyas said. “With a unique acrylic ball chair, twin beds, and plush accessories, the upstairs area has officially become ‘kid central.’” The Lyas’ daughter in particular has a room any teenage girl would dream of – in addition to the aforementioned unique acrylic ball chair, fluffy pillows on the bed, and pink accents, it is a bedroom straight out of a magazine. ABOUT
The master bathroom features a spacious shower and tub that gives off the feel of being in a luxury hotel.
From the second floor, one can hop up a short flight of stairs to what the Lyas family calls the bunk room, which is the perfect hangout for the Lyas kids and their friends. There’s ample space to hang out and play games, and Lyas said that project designer Chelsea Braeden designed the addition of another floor to the home that includes a room with built in bunk beds and a fun, baby blue shiplap ceiling, which, Lyas said, was an idea proposed by interior designer Lydia Smith. Getting the home from where it was to where it is was a labor of love – but now, two and a half years into the transformation, the Lyas family will tell you unreservedly: It was worth it. 26 T O W N

GOOD TASTE
PROMOTION
By: Scott Atkinson, Wine Manager at PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE
We Shall Celebrate and Give Thanks There is a literal Act of Congress declaring that we shall celebrate Thanksgiving. Seriously. Look up House Joint Resolution 41 from the 77th Congress in 1941. Say what you will about our elected officials, it is an incontrovertible fact that they got this right. Just think about it, an entire holiday simply predicated upon giving thanks. Nothing else. Just simply being thankful. The evolution of this day is pretty magnificent as well. We can all gather on the fourth Thursday of November and eat, drink, spend time with the most important people in our lives, watch the Detroit Lions lose, nap, and be thankful.
We at Piggly Wiggly are thankful that wine has become an integral part of this tradition, and we are very thankful when you allow us to help you celebrate this incredible holiday. Thanksgiving, this most American of holidays, can be best celebrated with Zinfandel, the most American of wines. Here are a few of our favorite Zinfandel producers. A veritable Mount Rushmore of Zinfandel, if you will.
BIALE
RIDGE
It all started in the 1940s when 14-year-old Aldo Biale helped his mother to make ends meet by selling to insider Napans–along with eggs and produce–some of the family’s homemade Zinfandel. Over the old “party line” phone system, the code words “a Black Chicken” signified a jug of bootleg wine…and kept nosy neighbors and the authorities from finding out about Aldo’s underground Zinfandel operation.
Even the most pugnacious critic of American wines will laud Ridge. Consistently regarded as one of the finest wineries in America, Ridge has always been an advocate for Zinfandel. While some may deride Zinfandel as a lesser grape, the geniuses at Ridge know the truth. Zinfandel can be a world class wine when correctly crafted. And Ridge comes correct. They are also the largest grower of organically certified grapes in Sonoma County. Ridge makes wine the right way, they always have, and they continue to do so.
ONCE & FUTURE
An icon of the California wine industry, Joel Peterson’s name has been synonymous with Zinfandel since he began a “small side project” in the 1970’s called Ravenswood Winery. Peterson fell in love with the variety and set out to prove it could produce serious and age worthy wines. Peterson never slowed down after selling Ravenswood in 2001. Over the years, he has become an involved and beloved member of the California wine community, serving as the President of Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers, founding ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates & Producers), and serving as ZAP’s President twice. His original punch down tool now calls the Smithsonian Museum its home. With Once & Future, Peterson continues his legacy, utilizing the same methods upon which he founded Ravenswood all those years ago. ABOUT
BEDROCK
Joel Peterson’s son, Morgan Twain-Peterson, learned much from his father and mother. We all know that the next generation doesn’t always prosper in the family business. Morgan not only prospered, he forged his own path. He didn’t neglect the family legacy of Zinfandel, however. Bedrock is an apropos name for this stunning Zinfandel producer. Morgan has the Bedrock of his father’s expertise upon which to rely. We are Piggly Wiggly are incredibly thankful for innumerable things. We are thankful for Zinfandel, turkeys, our family, and certainly for you. Thanks for giving us a chance to make your Thanksgiving better.
