There are so many ways to seek physical fitness.

The quest for health, strength, endurance, and aesthetics can take us down a million different paths. Ultimately it becomes about finding what works best for us in our own lives. What sparks us to want to move? What makes us keep showing up? The answer won’t be the same for any two people, which is why it’s so important that we get really honest with ourselves and the commitments we make. How can we honor the intentions we set in a positive, effective way? I believe the answer lies in how mindful we are.

ASK YOURSELF WHAT’S AT STAKE. Is it a health goal, like being able to get off that blood pressure medicine? Is it increased mobility like my desire to be active with my son for many years to come?

When we identify and name a motivating factor we can more easily find ourselves motivated.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE SELFISH! Doing something that is one hundred percent just for you will make you a better person at home, at work, and in your everyday life. Every Monday I am transported back in time to my childhood as I shuffle ball change my way through an adult tap class. Tapping challenges my agility, coordination, balance, and brain, but I’m having so much fun that the actual health benefits of the class are an afterthought.

CONSIDER INCLUDING THOSE YOU LOVE. A member who takes my fitness classes has enrolled in an aerial silks class with her daughter. I have people tell me how they’ve utilized jump park passes to join in and jump with their children. Every now and then, I will kick my way into a karate class with my son. When we involve those we love we are reminded how easy it is to burn a lot of calories while having so much fun.

YOU’RE NOT MAKING PROGRESS. NOW WHAT?!

It’s happened to us all - progress, progress, progress, and then nothing. One day it’s “you look amazing,” and the next day it’s cold-turkey compliment cutoff. Your body has inadvertently crossed its proverbial arms, plopped down in a corner, and stuck out its pouty lip… Not. Moving. There comes a point in every body-changing, goal-attaining journey when the tires of progress come to a screeching halt, no matter what the changes and goals may be. It’s unavoidable, yet not undefeatable. Keep calm and take these Carnigirl suggestions into consideration.

1) Do you actually know specifically how much you’re eating?

It’s a simple question that might get a shotgun “yes” answer until you stop and reflect. Much less common knowledge is how much our bodies need. For example, too much of a calorie deficit can cause your body to cling to unwanted fat for dear life, and dehydration can cause your body to hold all the extra water, which looks and feels weighty. Try this: start by tracking every bite and sip you take for 1 week. Write it all down in a pad measuring and counting calories. Plug your numbers into any online Calorie Deficit Calculator. Your numbers will reveal if you’re headed int the right direction.

How are you tracking your progress? Is this a real plateau or has the scale just stopped moving? Maybe you’ve added some beneficial (and heavier) lean muscle mass in place of fat. Are your clothes fitting better? Are you getting more restful sleep at night and feeling more energized during the day? The point is there are more than a couple of ways to track progress besides a scale. Pick a new one or three and give it a few weeks to show some change.

What about your hormones? Are you helping your body recover completely through nutrition, hydration, and rest? Maybe you need to add a supporting supplement to your daily routine (i.e. a high quality multivitamin). Where is your stress level and how are you managing it? High levels of cortisol (produced from high levels of stress) keep your body in constant fight-or-flight mode and can have harmful effects on immunity and digestion, among other things. Various factors can cause shifts in your body’s levels of leptin, insulin, estrogen, and even cortisol - all of which contribute to weight control, and can wreck your progress train when out of balance. Bottom line, check yourself. Better yet, have someone check you.

Have you settled in to a certain diet and exercise regimen that is no longer challenging your body, causing it to respond with change? The longer you eat and workout a certain way, the more comfortable your body gets. Essentially, your plumb line is always moving. If you’re not actively responding to your body’s new baseline, you will absolutely stop seeing forward progress. Add a little more weight to the bar. Pick up the pace or throw in some interval work. Try intermittent fasting, a total diet overall, or (my fave) a fad diet for a minute. Do something that will shock your system out of comfort mode and back into work mode.

Craft O’Neal Craft O’Neal is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of O’Neal Industries Inc. founded in 1921.

He graduated from Birmingham-Southern College and is the owner of Craft’s on Church Street and The Fennec.

There’s a lot of good word-of-mouth with the late-night scene at the Fennec.

Has it become like a dance party?

I was thinking perhaps it was my midlife crisis, but my wife set me straight, saying it was too late for that. Seriously, I’ve always been drawn to great food and entertainment and the possibility of being a part of that in our community was intriguing and exciting. Also, the opportunity to collaborate with my son, Craft Jr., and possibly other family members was an attraction as well.

Late night at The Fennec is amazing. It begins with a band on our main stage playing from 9-11 followed immediately by a DJ until 1:45AM. As mentioned earlier, the acoustics and lights are terrific and guests from all over the metro area come to enjoy. Saturday nights feel a lot like New Year’s Eve. And I would be remiss to leave out our Foxhole Lounge, a very popular craft cocktail bar off the main stage.

I had also viewed firsthand the success and enjoyment my in-laws and brother-in-law had in creating and building Zoe’s and thought it would be a great opportunity and challenge to try to do the same with Craft’s.

What kind of acts do you like booking?

Initially, nearly all acts booked played mostly country and while that is still our focus, the acts we book have become more diverse to include pop and classic rock. We also have a jazz night at least once per month. We offer live music on both our bar and main stages, with solo artists or duos playing on the bar stage followed by bands on the main stage. Fennec musicians are experienced, either up and coming artists or well-established performers.

We’ve set the bar high to assure Fennec customers experience great entertainment regardless of the day or time they arrive.

The Fennec was created with the desire to contribute something unique and fun to be a part of, that would enhance the livability and vibrancy of our city. Clearly, steel and hospitality are very different, but what drives me is the opportunity to satisfy customers and see them return for more. The business principles for operating successfully in each are the same. It begins with developing a strong, customer focused team, with a culture based on honesty and integrity. Providing quality products and services is paramount to success and of course operational excellence as well.

Craft’s is a fast-casual chicken-based restaurant open for lunch through dinner with a location in Mountain Brook and a second location opening near UAB in December. There are three facets of the business: dine in, take out and catering. Our menu is designed to accommodate and please all diners, young and old, for those with the desire to eat healthy. Craft’s is a delicious and economical choice for most any occasion, including office luncheons and tailgate parties.

There is a lot to cover when describing The Fennec. In our first year of business, we were blessed to have many high-profile events. What makes The Fennec unique is our full-service offerings and versatility of our spaces. We do outsource as needed, but unlike many venues, we are mostly self-sufficient with a dedicated events team that creates customized experiences and menus.

We offer a selection of tables, chairs, basic linens, china and glassware, AV and lighting, stages, etc. Additionally, we have a private entrance with a dedicated guests’ elevator, great bathrooms, a bridal suite, and support spaces.

Being near Railroad Park is a great place to be and will only get better in the coming months and years as the area continues to develop and improve.

We love parties. We love gatherings, shindigs, celebrations, soirées, galas, balls, and events of all kinds. And we love to help you plan for these august occasions. Come on down to The Pig and let us help you get ready for your throw-down!

High School Algebra: In the esteemed words of Douglas Adams, “Don’t Panic.” One of the first things we learned in high school algebra is this; the more variables there are, the harder it is to solve the equation. We like to keep it simple, when possible.

The Red – Keep it simple. Perrin Cotes du Rhone Rouge is the “go to” red wine. It is versatile, great value, very food friendly, and it is a screwcap (more on this later.)

Lots of wine for a crowd? Can’t beat it.

The White – Second verse, same as the first. The Perrin family also crafts a Cotes du Rhone Blanc. Just as above, it is versatile, great value, very food friendly, and it is a screwcap.

BEER: Unless you feel very strongly, we advocate cans. The technology for cans has improved greatly over the years. All the local craft breweries use cans now, as it provides a superior product. And just as above, limit your choices. Keep it down to two or three choices and relax!

SUGAR AND THE BUBBLES DILEMMA: The bubbly tends to be used for three main purposes; mixing, such as mimosa, sipping and toasting, and proper celebrations.

1.Mixing: Prosecco is the most popular bubbly for mixing. The concern we often see is that folks are (rightly) concerned with the sugar content. If you are adding orange juice, cranberry juice, etc. you are likely adding something with a decent sugar content. We like to suggest a lower sugar Prosecco, like the Ostro.

2. Cava is the best option for sipping and toasting. It is also a great option for mixing, as the production method is more like true Champagne. Cava bubbles, like Champagne bubbles, are finer and tighter, as opposed to the frothier style of Prosecco. Castellar Cava is our go-to Cava for the event budget.

3. Champagne. Champagne, Champagne, Champagne. Certain situations merit the real deal. The bigger the occasion, the more necessary the Champagne. Champagne starts “reasonable” and goes to mortgage payment territory quickly. The Andre Clouet, for the money, cannot be beat.

ALTERNATIVE CLOSURES: Box wines, screwcap wines, and other non-cork closures are ok. There may be some out-dated concerns about the reputation of screwcaps, but they are just that – out-dated. Given the choice, almost all winemakers would prefer screwcaps or (gasp!) boxed wines for wines consumed within a few years of production. So don’t be afraid to check with us on a screwcap or a (gasp!) boxed wine. The Vignes des Lumières Red has absolutely no business being as good as it is for the money. This is a great wine that just happens to come in a box.
