Start chilled. Red or white. Pinot Gris is a good crowd-pleaser. It’s slightly sweeter than a chardonnay and goes well with food that’s a little spicy like anything Mexican. Pinot Noir is a light red that works great with meats and is excellent slightly chilled. Reislings are a bit too sweet for some, but complement spicy Asian food very well. A Sauvignon Blanc pairs great with summer grilling especially if it’s chicken, fish or pork.

Slow-smoked meats? Try a juicy Grenache from Spain. Finally, don’t forget about a Rose. They always seem to work well, especially as the sun is setting!

The Beach Without Kids HENDERSON PARK INN It’s always interesting planning exotic getaways - Mexico, the Caribbean, maybe the Mediterranean. It’s easy to forget - some of the best beaches in the world are only a 4-and-a-half-hour-drive away. No endless flights and expensive airline fares, no money conversion issues, foreign-language issues, general safety, etc. We all know the Gulf Coast is great for family trips, but what about a simple getaway with friends or a spouse for an uncomplicated recharge?

Henderson Park Inn is located just off MidBay Bridge, but seemingly miles away from the congestion of the Destin scene.

This spot is now part of the state’s Henderson Park that has 6,000 feet of natural scenic shoreline.

Henderson Park Inn offers all the conveniences and luxuries of a hotel experience, including complimentary beach towels and non-alcoholic drinks along with plenty of free beach umbrellas (which unlike most all other beach spots aren’t promptly taken down around 4 pm as the beach rental service is eager to get everyone up so they can call it a day). There is also a complimentary happy hour on the beachside deck from 4-6 pm daily. In addition, the Inn offers a full breakfast buffet with chefs ready to prepare eggs, omelets and Belgium waffles as you order. Like any emerald coast trip, great fishing, fine dining and water sports are available, but it seems the best way to enjoy the trip is sitting on the beach catching up on your reading, enjoying an adult beverage, and simply having nothing to do.

Beginning the subway tile installation with the cleats in position until it dries.

This homeowner needed a kitchen facelift to their Crestline Park cottage. The appliances were relatively new, and the cabinets, while dated, were real wood, and too expensive to replace. The floor was a desired Mexican tile they wanted to keep. It pretty much came down to really just changing the dated laminate counters and replacing the backsplash. After looking at the pros and cons of new laminate, marble, granite and quartz, it came down to quartz or butcher block. With the advice of their agent, Jamie Goff at LAH, they decided butcher block fit in best with the cottage feel, and subway tile would be a great complement.

After numerous difficulties getting quotes and getting builders to follow up, they finally found someone who could cut and install the counters ($500). The rest of the project was handled by the homeowners. The best price for the counters was found at Southeastern Salvage ($300), and the subway tiles ($70) were purchased at Home Depot. The homeowners decided to go with a darker finish.

And it was trial and error in laying on the protectant which was a polyacrylic proved to work best. The tiles were not too easy to install, as this was the owners’ first time to do it, but like anything became easier as the job proceeded. The tile grout was put on last.

The only other addition was a new sink with the previous silver sink being substituted with a white one from Home Depot ($200).

Home contractor Jay Williams shows two examples of doing a renovation right the first time.

5,500 square feet of unfinished basement “We had looked at many homes with the help of my cousin who is an architect. He emphasized the differences in the way homes were constructed in the 90s compared to more recent years. Particularly as it relates to the quality of construction, workmanship and materials used. That sold us plus the fact that we would be able to build a new home, with our own design, within our home. That space was only concrete slab and studs, so it was like an empty canvas.”

What was included in the renovation?

“We wanted the design to have a very ‘open’ feel to it. My wife is from the south of France near Montepillier, so we also wanted a Mediterranean feel as well. We have a wine cellar, billiards room, kitchen, an additional laundry room, home theater and music room, an office, a gym and a master bedroom suite (designed with our own personal touch).”

What it was like to work with Jay: “After having some terrible experiences with contractors before Jay, it was a true blessing that we were referred to Jay by a very knowledgeable person from our bank. When I met him the first time I knew he was the ‘one.’ I am a surgeon and I am very OCD about detail, precision and cleanliness. Jay is the construction version of myself. He is also honest and a man that can be trusted. His crew was amazing. The workmanship was fantastic. Many of our ideas came from pictures we may have seen and our own tastes and quirks. Jay accommodated us and merged our ideas with the reality of what could be done and what made sense. The finished product was more than we expected.”

ALEX KRUMDIECK of KRUMDIECK A+I DESIGN discusses a recent Homewood project.

“As their family grew, our clients needed to expand their Homewood bungalow. After a thorough investigation into the existing structure, it was revealed that the integrity of the existing structure had been compromised and much of the home would not be saved. In order to maintain the most open space for outdoor activities, much of the foundation was left so that an existing non-conforming side yard setback could be maintained. The new structure, three times the original square footage, needed to continue to fit in the street context, which proved to be a challenge facing the design team. In order to properly scale the house, much of the second floor was contained within the overall roof line.

The design team was tasked with the goal of creating a refuge from the chaos of everyday life. The owners wanted an understated space, connecting and capturing the exterior space. Clean simple lines, crisp detailing, restraint and a minimal palette became the tools to express an understated elegance. Becoming a canvas, the architecture allows the ever-changing exterior to fill the windows with color, light to filter in casting designs on the walls, the exterior to be captured as the art in the home.�

The Magic of Midtown - Rooftop Terrace at 20 Midtown

Have you noticed the incredible urban renewal in downtown and midtown?

Railroad Park, Regions Field and the great restaurants have done a 180 for the area. But when 20 Midtown made plans to bring upscale residences to area, it solidified everything and confirmed the growth was no trend.

I lived on Morris Ave roughly 10 years ago, and it seemed the area shut down at 5 pm.

There was basically one restaurant open at night, and no convenient grocery store.

Things have changed! We all know about the new bars and restaurants, but what makes 20 Midtown so great is the anchor tenant - Publix. A long-time coming, and much needed. Publix will serve the entire area, and be right there for the residents of 20.

Another great thing that really expands the entire area are the Zyp Bikes. With a station only about a block and half away, it connects it all. Railroad Park, the Barons, great bars and restaurants, Pepper Place Farmer’s Market, local breweries, and 5 Points South are a quick bike ride away.
