THE IN-CROWD
ANSWER :::
We’re really looking forward to enjoying Ovenbird’s outdoor seating this spring. They opened in late fall, and the weather had begun to turn bad by then, but with the sun setting later and later, it should really be great. Charlie Thigpin’s Garden Gallery really adds to the scenery, and there’s no doubt they will offer incredible cocktails. Rojo is still a favorite for great weather and great daytime buzz. And it’s nice to be able to bring your dog, and cruise down to Caldwell Park.

NOW THAT THE WEATHER IS GETTING NICER, WHERE IS A GOOD PLACE TO GRAB A DRINK OUTSIDE?

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING
A NEW UAB STADIUM? What’s the deal with UAB getting a new stadium? Will it happen? It seems nothing is official, and we haven’t heard much over the last couple of months. In December, the university was working with the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex on plans for a new, open-air football stadium.

ON VINYL
MALIBU - ANDERSON .PAAK “Cause baby there’s room in here. Just enough for two in here. Ain’t nobody but you and me in here” begins the single “Room in Here” from Anderson .Paak’s second full album. Mainly a laid back hip-hop album, like the cover art work, .Paak seems to throw all his influences into the music. Released in January, vinyl sales will be available in April. A record that’s good enough to be enjoyed as a whole.

SAIGON NOODLE BOWL Vietnamese food is becoming more and more popular, as its diverse and full-flavored menu boasts a lot of vegetables and uses little oil. Influenced by the Chinese and the French (Vietnam being a former French colony), the diverse menu is sweet, sour and spicy. Located in the strip by the 280 Target, Saigon Noodle Bowl does not serve alcohol, but makes a great lunch if you can brave the traffic.

Date Night
As a new mom, date-nights can be fewer and far between. But, my husband and I still make it a priority at least a few times a month. One of my favorite parts about date nights is getting dressed up a little nicer and getting to try one of the many new fabulous restaurants Birmingham keeps getting! See below for a simple datenight outfit for a little inspiration this month. The best part? I bet you already have most of these items in your closet. And if you don’t have a chunky oversized cardi, OTK boots, black jeggings, a piko top or layering jewelry, do yourself a favor and get in on these staple pieces.
Bag This classic Michael Kors bag has been through it with me. I transition it through many seasons and it’s great because it goes from holding extra baby toys to sophisticated date night with no effort.
No baby = lots of jewelry! I layer it on when he’s not around to try to break each piece. Local designer Kate Morris Jewelry or KMJ as her loyal fans call her is my current obsession.
Transition Necklace I’m all about layering necklaces when I can. That shark tooth makes me excited for Spring and the shorter necklace goes with EVERYTHING.
Boots These Sam Edelman OTK boots are one of my top 3 favorite pairs of shoes...EVER. Enough said. If you don’t already have OTK boots, for the love, please treat yourself now.
Earrings When I’m not around the baby who might rip my ear lobe apart, I go for a little more dangly earring. These are fun and on trend with the exposed agate stone and gold drip.
6 TIPS FOR THE GUYS ON DATE NIGHT
1. Put DOWN the phone. Seriously, you can check Snapchat when I’m not with you, don’t do it during our date.
2. Be a Southern Gentleman. Get the door, walk me with your hand on the small of my back when guiding me through a door, etc.
3. Smell is everything. Don’t overpower the whole restaurant with your cologne but definitely apply it. It means you took the time to smell nice for me. Winner.
4. Don’t wear more product than me. If you are using beard balm and so much hair gel I can see it crunch, your whole head is comprised of product. Let’s keep it minimal, shall we?
With the Birmingham temperature being a little, well, temperamental this time of year a great throw on long cardigan helps you transition from the warm start to an evening to the chillier temps as the night wears on.
5. Conversation. It’s an art. Practice it...as in think ahead of some questions you can ask. Take a real interest in her answers. It makes for a more intriguing and engaging time.
6. Compliments. If your date or wife walks out and you think, “Wow, she looks great.” Tell her that. It never gets old plus your date just spent a lot of time to look good for you.

What is the number one piece of advice you give your clients before they put their house on the market? “When thinking about selling your home, it is wise for a seller to go ahead and get a pre-listing home inspection done by a qualified professional before listing your property. These home inspections can reveal any major problems and defects which you may be able to correct before listing your home. Any items you can correct on the front end may save you some unnecessary complications with potential buyers during the selling process.” ABOUT

“Michelle Creamer made us feel like we were her only customers.” Regina and Curtis Peacock found the process of looking for a home overwhelming at times, but thankfully, they had Realtor Michelle Creamer to guide them through the process. “She must have shown us a hundred houses,” says Curtis, “but she never sounded frustrated or impatient. She made us feel important, like finding our home really mattered.” Regina says Michelle was always available to answer questions. “We consider her a friend and highly recommend her to anyone shopping for a home. Not Your Grandmother’s Succulents
by - Jason C. Cooper, Principal & Horticulturist Sweetspire Gardens 2146 Tyler Road, Suite 212 205-960-2795 jason@sweetspiregardens.com
Plants offer us a connection to the larger world around us and help to calm the spirit from the hustle and bustle of life.
The days of the lone aloe vera plant sitting on the windowsill are gone. Today’s succulents are available in numerus varieties, shapes, and colors to match almost anyone’s imagination. These little plants can be found as an accent on a coffee table, or in a tablescape arrangement, or even hanging on the wall as a piece of art. What makes this group of plants inviting to most people is the relative, small amount of care they require. Just add light and a small amount of water. Succulents by nature are able to store water in their leaves and prefer for the soil to dry out between watering. This quality is usually the number one selling point because the last thing we all need is another box to check off on our to-do list. Plants offer us a connection to the larger world around us and help to calm the spirit from the hustle and bustle of life. These little plants are not your grandmother’s succulents. They may just be the “happy” that you need to share with someone today. For more information, visit Sweetspire Gardens in Hoover, or contact Jason at jason@sweetspiregardens.com.

the Weekender One of the great things about Birmingham is it’s centrality in the heart of the Southeast. Its proximity means your usually just a few hours’ drive to so many great spots. About Town will be featuring a different spot each issue.
Memphis Minus Graceland MEMPHIS Like most New Yorkers who have never been to the Statue of Liberty, most Memphians have never been to Graceland. In fact, most probably aren’t really sure where it is, outside of that it’s on the south end of town in a bad neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, you should go. But there are a million-and-one articles on Graceland, and Memphis has a lot more to offer.
Memphis has a nice downtown trolley that can at least help you get to downtown spots. It runs until 8 p.m. on Fridays and 9 p.m. on Saturdays. Check matatransit.com for routes.
Levitt Shell amphitheater located in Overton Park. Elvis Presley gave his first paid concert here on July 30, 1954.
Memphians are Memphians first, and only Tennessean by formality. If you don’t know, you should. Memphis is not as safe as Birmingham. Great neighborhoods are right around the corner from bad ones. The best advice- pay attention and don’t be dumb. P HOT OGRAPHY: JUSTIN FOX BURKS
The Bluff City is a great party town, kind of like a milder version of New Orleans. Both share the Southern Mississippi River culture.
Memphis is the youngest of Tennessee’s major cities, founded in 1819 as a planned city by a group of wealthy Americans including future president Andrew Jackson. Its river spot, high-trade status meant new ideas and expressions were ingrained into its culture. Not only the music legacy, but also its entire artistic community.
Friday Afternoon > Grab a drink at The Peabody’s lobby, and try to check out the ducks before they exit the Red Carpet at 5 to their roof-top lodgings. (The roof provides a decent view of the River as well). Friday Night > Walk next door and hit the Rendezvous. (You want to sit downstairs in the basement. It’s the original dining area.) Make sure you’re prepared to drink some draft beer, and make sure you start with the Rendezvous Special Plate - an assortment of meats, cheese, peppers, crackers, etc. Friday Late Night > Walk or grab a quick ride to Beale Street. The best advice is to just play it by ear, as far as which places you want to visit.
After Lunch > Go to Stax. Stax is a major link in Memphis’ music legacy, and more economical and easier in-and-out than Graceland. Be sure to visit the record store. WITH THE KIDS: Visit the Memphis Zoo. Memphis has probably one of the best zoos in the country, with new additions and exhibits frequently being opened. Their next big renovation is the hippo exhibit opening in early May. Dinner > Make plans to try Hog and Hominy. Its Italian cooking with Southern roots’ was voted a top-12 restaurant by GQ. It’s further out east than where you’ve been hanging out thus far, but the 15 to 20-minute drive from downtown is worth it.
IF YOU GO > WHERE TO STAY: - James Lee House in Victorian Village A wonderful, more intimate experience. - Talbot Heirs Funky, different and completely off the radar. (Great for groups) - The Peabody The lobby is why you stay here. - Bass Pro Shops Do your own research on this one. It’s a different experience, but has stellar accommodations in the Bass Pro Shops in the Pyramid. - The River Inn at Harbor Town On the river just north of the downtown center. A hard place to leave.
THE DEAL WITH BAR BQ:
Saturday Morning > After you’ve done your best to sleep in, possibly moderately or severely Clockwise from left: Payne’s Bar BQ, Stax, Pizza from Hog & Hominy, Terrace at River Inn hungover, hit the Majestic Grill on Main Street, The Arcade on South Main (Memphis’ oldest café), or Tamp After Diner > Head back downtown. Memphis has several and Tap (downtown as well) which is a trendy spot right late-night spots, and can be packed after 11 and dead now. before 10. For a real taste of Memphis culture, check out the former whorehouse Ernestine & Hazel’s or if you’re After Breakfast > Head Hurting? Need to relax? If the partying hard, check out Paula & Raiford’s Disco. Cash weather is nice, take some time to see the river. The only, fun starts later, like 11 p.m., on weekends only. They best spot is the National Ornamental Metal Museum if do serve beer in forties but offer liquor now as well. you need to veg. If you’re feeling active, Hit Beale Street Landing and Butler Park River Walk. Heading Home > Hit Sun Studio opening at 10 a.m., and get a T-shirt. Worth the visit, but you may be surprised Before Lunch > Visit the Lorrainne Hotel. Memphis has how small it is. Then grab lunch. The river has brought in a done a great job with the national landmark and it can be lot of Asian culture and some incredible Vietnamese food. properly enjoyed in roughly an hour-and-a-half. There are several to choose from, but check out Phuong Long if you’re a bit adventurous. It’s not located in the most Lunch > Next door to the Lorraine is Central Bar-BQ. glamorous strip, but it’s very authentic. Many Memphians consider this the city’s best. For more info visit the Memphis Cheat Sheet at ilovememphisblog.com
- Payne’s Not in the best neighborhood, and its no frills approach make it a true Memphis joint. - Cozy Corner Just rebuilt. It’s the spot for a sloppy experience. - Corky’s They may have sold their soul a bit when they franchised, but it’s tough to argue that it’s not some of the best there is. - The Bar BQ Shop Awesome spot in mid-town. Award winning -Dancing Pigs sauce. And BBQ spaghetti if you’re into that. - The Commissary Great Bar BQ but it’s out East just inside of Germantown. - Rendezvous Go because it’s an institution, and there’s a reason for it. Totally Memphis, and the wait staff is legendary.
WHERE TO SEE LIVE MUSIC: - Bar DKDC Great place to catch the locals. - Lafayette’s Evokes a storied past. It boasts live bands seven nights a week. - The Levitt Shell A great amphitheater that consistently gets great acts. - The Hi Tone The environment is very conducive to having the best time possible, and the staff is great. - The Buccaneer Known 20 years ago as the place to drink underage, it’s still a dive bar, but with awesome music.

At RealtySouth, real estate doesn’t simply equate to hard negotiation and paperwork. For us, it’s more than a transaction. It’s the relationship that matters most. For more than 60 years, we’ve been running in the same crowds. If I look familiar, it’s not necessarily because I sold your cousin’s home. We are in the same carpool line every afternoon. Our children have been classmates for years. Your community is our community. We are proud to be your neighbor.

Gusty helped us buy our first home over six years ago. So, when it came time to say goodbye and move up, the only logical choice was Brik/G3. We have followed Gusty’s success over the last 6 years and could not have imagined working with any other realtor or group. Gusty and his team of professionals held up to their ever-growing reputation and made this process ever so smooth. If you want to buy or sell without hassle or struggle, choose the #1 team- Brik/G3! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication! – Erin and Blake Labrato
I recently closed on a house. Angela was awesome! Great customer service!! Angela never failed to email or text me whenever I had any questions or concerns pre- and postclosing. She is a great addition to the Gusty Gulas Group. She made my home buying experience stress-free, especially considering I lived out of town. Thanks again. It was a pleasure working with her. – Barbara Davis
