ANSWER :::
QUESTION :::
WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO BRING TO A MUSIC FESTIVAL?
Sunscreen! Unless you’ll be there at night, don’t forget. Even if it’s not that sunny, you’ll need it. Comfortable shoes are a must, and don’t wear anything you don’t mind sweating in because you will be hot and a bit messy. To fight what will probably be a nightmare with the bathroom situation bring hand sanitizer, tissues and for women bring a p-mate to keep yourself from having to sit directly on the seat. Make sure your phone is fully charged, and or bring a portable solar charger. Chapstick. A fold-out hat. An Undercover Bra Stash is great for women to use as a wallet. And check out Etymotic Music Pros earplugs. They’re great at controlling your exposure to the volume.
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING
HOW DOES SLOSS FEST HANDLE THE HEAT? Sloss Furnaces could easily one of the best venues in the Southeast for a music festival. And there’s no doubt Red Mountain has lined up a great list of musicians. But like all summer festivals, the weather can be brutal, and there were some issues last year with the cooling areas and water access. They were smart to listen to their audience last year, and according to an interview on RMR, they were aware of the situation, and have a plan in place for an upgrade.
ON VINYL
M WARD - MORE RAIN It’s almost impossible to find someone who has listened to M Ward, to not like him. Laid back but never sleepy. Folksy Americana, but alternatively modern. His music seems to work for any mood. Coming off his collaboration with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him, “More Rain” was just released a couple of months ago. Called a rainy-season record, I disagree. The record seems to work as an outdoor party album. Easy going and consistent from beginning to end.

Do you see a scramble in the real estate market this time of year with school registration right around the corner? “Absolutely! From local buyers moving to out of state buyers relocating, this is definitely a busy time for our real estate market. In addition, many students are involved in athletic activities, etc. within their schools. So, this gives an additional element to the “scrambling” for parents and their children’s summer participation. ” ABOUT

ALABAMA FAVORITES
TOMATOES Whether you refer to a tomato as a
fruit or a vegetable, there is no doubt that a tomato is a nutrient-dense, super-food that most people should be eating more of. The tomato has been referred to as a “functional food,” a food that goes beyond providing just basic nutrition, additionally preventing chronic disease and delivering other health benefits, due to beneficial phytochemicals such as lycopene.

GREENS are part of the cruciferous vegetable
family, which also includes kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, rutabaga and turnips. These nutrition powerhouses pack in lots of nutrients for a little amount of calories. If you are trying to eat healthier, cruciferous vegetables like collard greens should be at the very top of your grocery list. - medicalnewstoday.com
PEACHES According to a study from Texas A&M,
10 REASONS TO SUPPORT YOUR ALBAMA FARMER’S MARKET 1. FARM FRESH
Grocery store fruits and vegetables are several days old before they hit the shelves. In most cases, Farmer’s market produce is picked that morning, so you know the food is as fresh as you can get it outside of growing it yourself.
peaches have been shown to ward off obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Peaches can also help combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancer. The antioxidant vitamin C, when eaten in its natural form (in whole foods such as peaches) or applied topically, can reduce wrinkles, improve overall skin texture and help to fight skin damage caused by the sun and pollution.
2. MORE NUTRITIOUS
- medicalnewstoday.com
Produce from the farmer’s market almost always tastes better. Why? Because it is picked at the peak of ripeness and is incredibly fresh when it gets to you.
LOCAL RAW HONEY Some say that local honey contains a blend of local pollen, which can strengthen a person’s immune system, and reduce pollen allergy symptoms. Others have questioned this. The first fact is that there has been very little scientific research on whether local honey is helpful for the reduction of pollen related allergy symptoms. Regardless, it never hurts to support your local merchants - Read more at: healthimpactnews.com
JERUSALEM ARTICHOKES are moderately
high in calories; provides about 73 calories per 100 g, roughly equivalent to that of potatoes. Nevertheless, its high-quality phyto-nutrition profile comprises dietary fiber (non-starch carbohydrates) and antioxidants. Further, Jerusalem artichokes are a very good source of minerals and electrolytes, especially potassium, iron, and copper.
One look at the vivid colors of farmer’s market produce, and you’ll be able to tell just how nutritious the fruits and vegetables are. Compare that to produce at the grocery store, and you’ll see that the supermarket fruits and vegetables pale in comparison. 3. TASTES BETTER
4. AFFORDABLE
For the sheer nutrition you get from farmer’s market produce compared to supermarket produce, it’s a really good value. 5. VARIETY
The farmer’s market offers a wide array of fruits and vegetables that you can’t find in the produce section of your local supermarket. 6. SUPPORTS LOCAL ECONOMIES
Farms and farmer’s markets create JOBS. 7. SUPPORTS LOCAL FAMILY FARMS
- healthbenefitstimes.com
The number of local family farms has decreased in numbers over the years, succumbing to the high cost of running a farm and increasingly stiff competition from giant conglomerate-run farms that produce massive amounts of extremely cheap produce. Purchasing fruits and vegetables from farmer’s markets gives farmers the capital they need to operate and provide consumers an alternative to mass-produced foods.
SQUASH Summer squash is a rich source of Vitamin
8. CONSERVES FUEL
A and C, magnesium, fiber, folate, riboflavin, phosphorus, potassium and Vitamin B6. In addition, it is high in manganese, a mineral which helps the body process fats, carbohydrates, and glucose.
- fullcircle.com
Supermarkets receive their produce from hundreds or thousands of miles away, which requires shipping on refrigerated trucks and rail cars. Farmer’s market produce doesn’t have far to go from the farm to your table. Farmer’s markets also often operate in the open air and thus do not require electricity or heating. 9. BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
CUCUMBERS The cucumber is a member of the
botanical family Cucurbitaceae, along with honeydew, cantaloupe and watermelon. Made up of 95% water, cucumbers are naturally low in calories, fat, cholesterol and sodium. Their high water content helps ward off dehydration and combat the heat while their refreshing and mild taste appeals to even the pickiest eaters. - medicalnewstoday.com
Small family farms produce less environmental waste in the form of carbon monoxide, pesticide use, and chemical fertilizers. They are also less likely to use industrial machinery that contributes to environmental decay. 10. YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR FOOD COMES FROM
When you shop at the farmer’s market, you know where your food has been. You can talk with the farm stand workers to learn about the farm’s growing and processing practices. And you can even visit the farms to see how they grow and handle the produce you are consuming.

SUMMER SHADES
If you are questioning what your next polish purchase should be, these 6 colors will complement almost everything hanging in your closet this summer!
The Many Benefits of the
COCONUT White A great neutral that will blend with anything. A great complement to your summer skin!
SKIN & HAIR
Magenta Hot and fun! Perfect color to wear with your swimsuit at that neighborhood pool party.
If you have dandruff or dry hair, coconut oil is chock-full of the fatty acids that can improve these conditions.
FRESH BREATH Coconut oil lifts the bacteria from the surfaces within the mouth, and that’s great because removing oral bacteria greatly reduces your risk of disease around your gums.
WEIGHT LOSS
Classic Cherry Red Red is a power color that will add a pop of color to any look. Red can dress up any look especially by wearing a simple sundress and pairing your red nails with red lipstick.
Scientists have known about coconut’s ability to help blast fat for decades. A study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health back in 1985 proved that a single injection of capric acid (which abounds in coconut oil) resulted in “initially rapid, then a gradual decrease in food consumption and a parallel loss of body weight.
KILLS BACTERIA
Lavender Light purple can soften any look and pairs great with those floral prints we love to wear in the summer.
Around half of the fatty acids in coconut oil are lauric acid. Lauric acid is particularly good at killing bacteria, viruses, and fungi and, therefore, great in helping you stave off infections when used externally.
BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM The fats found in coconut oil (and butter) can help white blood cells recognize and destroy invading germs and tumours.
ANTIOXIDANT
Light Pink Light pink is the best color when you aren’t sure what color to pick, but want a classic or feminine look.
Because it’s a rich source of MCTs (medium chain triglycerides), coconut oil provides the building blocks to make a molecule called beta-HBA which improves antioxidant function. Reports also suggest it can be helpful in treating Alzheimer’s disease.
Seafoam If you are taking a trip to the beach this summer don’t leave the house without seafoam polish on your nails. The best color for getting that “beach look” down.
BUILD MUSCLE MCTs in coconut oil are good for upping your body’s energy expenditure and burning calories. MCTs found in coconut are also used in popular muscle-building products like Muscle Milk.
ORGAN FUNCTION A 2014 study showed that virgin coconut oil protects against liver damage.
FOR YOUR SUMMER PARTY-
BUY SOMETHING OLD.
INFLAMATION & ARTHRITIS An Indian study showed that the high levels of antioxidants present in virgin coconut oil actually reduced inflammation and healed arthritis more effectively than leading medications. Another recent study demonstrated that coconut oil harvested with medium (and not high) heat was found to suppress inflammatory cells. It worked as both an analgesic and anti-inflammatory.
Penguin West Bend Cooler Chrome-lined with protected glass insulation is the real deal to keep your ice happy.
Cocktail Stirrers make any drink taste better.
Lilly Pulizter Swim Trunks Channel your inner grandfather.
Boat Ash Tray Still smoke? These guys keep your ashes to the tray even on a windy dock.
Retro Glass Got to love the mid-century modern. Reminds me of Mad Men.

GUYS - WHAT YOUR CAR SAYS TO WOMEN Shaving Tips Gentlemen, had enough of the scruff look? Use this summer to clean up, and get a classic clean shave. 1. GO OLD SCHOOL
The Granola “Bra! I got the tent and kayak. Did you grab the tickets to Bonaroo?”
The Greenie “I really care about the environment. No! I really, really care about the environment! You don’t care about the environment nearly as much as I care about the environment.”
Our grandfathers did it better than we do. Forget all of these double, triple, quadruple blades, and start using single blade razors (like the one above). The single blade actually reduces redness and irritation. And oh yeah, this will save you tons of money by not having to keep buying cartlidges.
2. KEEP IT SHARP Another benefit of the single blades is the individual blades are usually a higher quality and are easily and cheaply interchangeable.
3. KEEP IT CLEAN
The Frat-Daddy “Dude, have seen my Costas? Nevermind, they’re hanging from my rearview mirror. It’s all good.”
A dermatologist recommended to me to dip your blade in alcohol to make sure it’s clean from irritants when you shave. (Just quickly wash off the alcohal before you start.)
The Company Car “Hi there! I’m in the medical or financial sales business. And I don’t have a car payment.”
4. KEEP IT WET Shaving in the shower is the way to go. All you need is small mirror on attached to the tile. Your skin will be warm and wet by the time you start shaving.
5. USE A BRUSH Applying your cream with a brush in a circular motion lifts the hairs far better than just using your hand.
6. AFTERSHAVE
The Red Flag “Not in a million years could I ever love a human being as much as I love this car.”
WEARING CLOTHES THAT ARE TOO BIG

Helpful Tips to Improve Your Look from a Girl’s Point of View
Tailors are your friends. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a guy wears a suit that is too big or too tight. Any guy can look great in a suit, especially if he is wearing a suit that appropriately fits his body. This goes for any clothes when an outfit fits your body it will flatter your entire look and up your game.
Some people like a balm or lotion more than the alcohol based traditional aftershave. But the idea of alcohol irriting your skin is a bit hype. If you already put lotion on your face, use the alcohol based. Alcohol is tough to beat to clean things up, and alcohol based aftershaves have a stronger more distict smell.
The Junior Leaguer “How’s my hair? I could be dating Miss America, and it will still take me longer to get ready than her. Seriously, does my hair look ok?”
CAMOUFLAGE?
CROCS
Really? Yes, we can see you! When picking out an outfit it is best to dress appropriately to your surroundings. For example, you wear a swimsuit at the beach or a tie at work. This same concept applies to wearing camo. It’s appropriate to wear camo at 1. The forest you hunt in. 2. Talladega. Anywhere elselet’s not and say we did.
AKA the fastest way to successfully not get her number! Let’s keep Crocs as pool shoes or yard work shoes - if you are wearing them for any other reason or when you are out on the town, we have a problem. A serious problem.

KEEP YOUR CLOTHES FOREVER Detox your closet! It’s always a good idea to clean out your closet regularly. I know saying goodbye to a few graphic tees may be tough, but it keeps you from wearing clothes that are out of date and looking like a boy. When you wear clothes that are tired and worn out you look tired and worn out.
CARING TOO MUCH Please don’t take longer to get ready than me. Too fashionable or trying too hard doesn’t radiate rugged masculinity. Knowing more about fashion than me is not a good thing. That being said, that’s no excuse to be a dirtbag.Try and care, but a guy who’s too pretty comes across as insecure.

1. I teach fourth grade at Cornerstone Schools of Alabama. My students are always writing me letters, or drawing me pictures that I find in my gym bag! 2. I go to Ultimate Nutrition for all of my vitamin/supplement needs (energy drinks, bars, amino acids, etc.). They do an outstanding job of helping you get exactly what you need, while not overloading you with unnecessary products. 3. My UAB bag! I am an avid Blazer and received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from UAB. I was also a Golden Girl! If I am teaching back-to-back classes, I will put my dirty clothes in my UAB bag. Go Blazers!! 4. I’m afraid I am old school when it comes to a planner. I still like to write down my agenda opposed to doing it electronically.
1
5. I am a germaphobe so I always have my own microphone balls. I use these to put over the headset I use while instructing my classes. I also keep hand sanitizer with me at all times. 6. I am obsessed with my nails, so I will always have nail polish with me. A nail emergency could arise at any moment, so a girl must be prepared! I also love using dry shampoo. If I have to go somewhere right after I teach, this helps me not look like I just taught. (Baby wipes are also great to keep in one’s gym bag! I don’t want to look like I just got into a fight with my mascara running down my face.)
7. I instruct a wide range of Les Mills and Lifetime Fitness Signature programs. Therefore, I am always learning or coming up with material for my classes. I always have choreography notes in my bag. 8. I teach a kickboxing class so the Italian Stallion, Rocky Balboa, likes to stay with my gloves. The kids in my class like playing with him too. I use the Christmas lights when I teach my Body Flow/Yoga classes. 9. I received my bag as a gift and it has lots of compartments for a variety of items. However, I prefer workout apparel from Nike and Under Armour.

She has been a gymnast since the age of 4, which eventually led into competitive cheerleading. She also ran track and is a first-degree black belt. College was the first time in her life she wasn’t a part of a sport-specific conditioning routine and that’s when she got into group fitness and weightlifting. Immediately after college she became a Les Mills certified instructor in BODYATTACK, BODYPUMP, and the GRIT series. She works out at Gold’s Gym - the Colonnade and Vestavia locations.

What’s your workout routine? Jennifer Myers wrote:
My exercise routine is somewhat unconventional, like my diet. I don’t have one day a week specific to chest or back or legs, etc. I work each muscle group two times within a 8-day cycle with 1 or 2 rest days. Think about it this way, if I have one day a week solely devoted to back and biceps, I’m only training those muscles 4 times a month. Cardio sessions, in the depths of prep, were BRUTAL lasting an average of 2 hours each day, but sometimes longer. Cardio consisted of a few High Intensity Intervals (HIIT) mixed with low intensity steady state (LISS) cardio. On May 10, at 8:55 a.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:
What about your diet? Jennifer Myers wrote:
In prep I typically have 3 to 6 “low” days which is a steep calorie deficit, followed by 1 or 2 “high” days to refuel and refill my muscles. Low days- Breakfast: Egg whites and a whole egg or two, with cheerios or oatmeal or fruit, and coffee. Lunch: A protein of any kind with a vegetable. Sometimes I’d make a taco salad-themed lunch, or a stir-fry of some sort. Other weeks would be cost and time sensitive so I’d end up eating the assumed fish and broccoli. Snack: Dannon light and fit greek yogurt and added frozen blueberries. Dinner: Something similar, if not the same, to lunch. My “high” days closely mirrored the low days, except I got an increase in carbs. Depending on my cravings I’d increase my oatmeal or add a starch or grain to another meal. And then other days I just needed a donut! I think it’s important to note the reason competitors eat almost the same thing every day is not because those foods are special or have some magical effect, but more to remain consistent so your body won’t have a negative response. On May 10, at 2:04 p.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:
What’s the deal with the heels and being so tan on stage? Jennifer Myers wrote:
Here’s the deal with the tan: because the amount of stage lighting that hits competitors, the tan has to be that dark to keep us from looking washed out. This is also why when you see stage pictures none of the competitors look abnormally tan like they do off stage. Competitors are also oiled right before going on stage which helps reflect the light and highlight muscle definition. The heels’ height has a few different reasons - on average the heel ranges from 4 1/2-5 1/2 inches. This not only helps the competitor appear taller and elongated, but also offsets the height difference between audience/judges on floor level versus the competitor on stage. The fact that the heels are required to be clear is for uniformity, mostly, but also to give the illusion of elongated legs. On May 12, at 11:01 a.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:
What’s the biggest misconception of the industry? Jennifer Myers wrote:
That lifting heavy weights will make women “bulky” and debunk the low weight, high repetition myth: Women, by nature, lack the hormone and testosterone levels required to put on a lot of muscle mass. The foundations of my workouts, in the off season and during prep, are powerlifting lifts. I weigh 130 lbs but deadlift nearly 250 lbs, squat 225 lbs, and bench press 140 lbs. Don’t be afraid of heavy weights!

Know Thy Pilates 5 Pilates Myths De-Bunked
Aero Joe Pilates Studio (Pepper Place) 2805 2nd Ave S - Suite 100 aerojoepilates.com 205.202.5758
Myth 1) Pilates is for Women Pilates was originally created by a man (Joseph “Joe” Pilates) for men. Joe Pilates’ early career included serving as a physical trainer for military and police forces. He later developed what we know as Pilates today while rehabilitating injured internees in a military camp during WWI. (Joe rigged springs to hospital beds, an innovation that led to his equipment designs later on.) Myth 2) Pilates is too Expensive In the 1940s when Joe and wife Clara originally opened their New York City studio, Pilates became a “trade secret” of dancers and other athletes. Socialites “in the know” soon followed. However, Joe envisioned his system for every body and every budget. While private instruction is expensive, one can benefit from Pilates’ lean muscle sculpting in a mat class for as little as $15! Myth 3) Pilates is too Hard Pilates is a great workout, but finding the right class is essential – especially for beginners. Try a private lesson the first time, or look for a small class size to better ensure individualized attention. If you’ve only tried mat, be sure to check out a Reformer or Tower class! The equipment supports proper alignment, making many of the mat exercises more accessible for beginners. Myth 4) Pilates is too Easy Today in the U.S., major NFL teams, ballet companies and even Broadway shows house Pilates equipment and employ trainers to keep their athletes in top shape. Pilates, at its best, is a system of training incorporating mat and equipment. To align, tone and experience the real power of Pilates, find a studio with the complete system: Reformer, Tower, Mat, Chair, Spine Corrector and Ladder Barrel. Myth 5) Pilates is all the Same. The method built through 40 years of research by Joe Pilates and passed down through “Elders,” those who trained with Pilates himself, is referred to as “traditional” or “classical.” Look to start out with “lineage trained” instructors who offer traditional Pilates and explore from there. Also, be sure to find an instructor who guides you in more than the choreography, varying exercises to ease your individual postural imbalances and muscle tightness. What is Cryotherapy?
Sam Triantos, owner of Tri One Cryotherapy
Tri One Cryotherapy is located in the D1 building next to Brookwood hospital. Cryotherapy was invented in 1978 in Japan, it has since grown in Asia and Europe and has been in America for roughly six years. The idea of Cryotherapy is a concept centered on the simplicity of cold therapy. At Tri One Cryotherapy individuals have the comfort of their own private room where the cryotherapy sauna is located, and a certified operator will be with you for the duration of the session. The unit is open at the top and you may exit at any time if needed, so it is not an issue for someone who is claustrophobic. The air in the chamber is hyper cooled and drops to -240 to -270 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 3 minutes. After this short, quick session you will notice improved energy, mental focus and clarity. Over the course of several sessions you will notice decreased pain and accelerated recovery. During Cryotherapy, the body constricts peripheral; tissues sending blood from the skin surface, muscle tissue, and surrounding joint space to the core of the body to protect core temperature. As the blood travels to the core it passes through the cardiovascular system where it is cleansed of toxins and supplied with oxygen, nutrients, and enzymes. After the session the body returns to normal circulation, supplying the enriched blood throughout the body. Cryotherapy is a natural solution with something to offer almost everyone. Old and young alike, wether you are looking for relief from chronic pain or looking to take your athletic recovery to the next level. At Tri One Cryo you will enjoy the comfort of the newest state of the art facility and top of the line cryochambers.
The Nike headquarters have the same machines as Tri One offers. It reaches temperatures below -200 degrees.

During a 2 to 3-minute session at -240F, blood vessels in your skin’s surface and muscle tissue constrict, forcing blood away from the peripheral tissues and toward your core. In the core, the body’s natural filtration system works to remove toxins and inflammatory properties of the blood.
After exiting the cryochamber, filtered blood flows back to the peripheral tissues. Now cleaner and enriched with oxygen, nutrients and enzymes - your blood warms and enriches skin and muscles, and range of motion increases.
Over the next 48 hours, the process of restoration occurs and the body returns to a former and better state or condition with reduced pain and inflammation, and increased energy levels. Recovery times from strenuous workouts and injury are improved and shortened.

The Best One-Hour Workout on the Planet
General Manager Tristan Tillette explains how the science behind the OrangeTheory workout generates such amazing results for their clients.
The physiological theory behind the OrangeTheory workout is known as “Excess PostExercise Oxygen Consumption,” or EPOC. By providing you with a heart-rate monitor and POD, we can monitor your 5-zone interval training sessions that we call the Orange 60. During the 60-minute workout, you will perform multiple intervals designed to produce 12 to 20 minutes of training at 84% or higher of your maximum heart rate, which translates to Zones 4/5. This program design produces workout “afterburn” effect, which is an increased metabolic rate for 24 to 36 hours after the workout. When combining the amazing workout with EPOC, our clients burn an average of 500 to 1000 calories. The OrangeTheory workout will produce increased muscle Endurance, Strength and Power and if desired, tremendous weight loss. With energetic music, a talented group of fitness coaches and a high-energy studio, you have the recipe for a workout that produces BIG and LASTING results. < left. Heather has lost over 30lbs in 6 months Members’ heart rates are digitally posted to encourage the desired ‘orange zone.’
The OrangeTheory Fitness training session is composed of three components: treadmill interval training blocks, indoor rowing and weight room or resistance training blocks. These Orange 60 sessions are open to all adults and teens, ages 16 and older. All fitness levels are welcome as our program is specifically designed for everyone from power walkers to elite performance athletes. As you plan to participate in your first Orange 60 workout, please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start time so we can educate and prepare you for the most efficient, sciencebased workout you will ever experience. Call your nearest studio to book your first complimentary workout. If weight loss is your goal, you can expect to see an estimated loss of three to five pounds per week by attending three to five sessions per week and with proper nutritional planning. If performance is your goal, you can expect to see an increase in power, speed and strength after your first two weeks of attending two to four sessions per week. Benefits of Yoga STRETCH, STRENGTHEN AND EMPOWER
More and more people are discovering how yoga works to improve health, heal aches and pains, and keep sickness at bay. Once you understand them, you’ll have even more motivation to step onto your mat. INCREASED FLEXIBILITY. This is the most obvious benefit of yoga. As you become better at your practice and more flexible, you’ll also probably notice that aches and pains start to disappear. MUSCLE STRENGTH AND TONE. Muscles should do more than look good; they protect us from conditions like arthritis and back pain. When you build strength through yoga, you balance it with flexibility, and it’s a far more practical strength. ENERGY AND VITALITY. Doing yoga increases your blood flow, promotes balance and endurance, and wakes your body’s muscles naturally through deep stretching movements. BALANCED METABOLISM. Along with increased circulation by not only using every muscle in your body but also twisting, yoga helps wake up your internal organs and aids in digestion.
WEIGHT REDUCTION. You may not burn the calories as aerobic exercise, but yoga can put you “in touch” with your body like few other exercises, and you will be far more mindful of your caloric intake. < NATALIE PEACH’S yoga practice CHOLESTEROL HEALTH. We LOVED working with Sarah. She quickly understood the type of house we were looking for and was eager to help us find it. She was encouraging and patient with us as we looked at several homes, until we found the right one. When we did find the right one, she carefully explained the process to us and made us aware of each step in the buying process. Buying and selling at the same time is not for the faint of heart, but Sarah kept us laughing during what was a stressful time. She was quick to answer our questions via text (even on the weekends) and was a great communicator during the whole process. We joked several times that Sarah had become more than a realtor, she was our friend and our therapist! ;) Each member of the Brik staff was also extremely helpful & informative & again, a great communicator. Overall we had such a great experience & we are glad to have used Brik for our home buying and selling needs Michael & Sonya Slaughter

Although I have bought several properties in my lifetime, I have never sold one. I appreciate the hard work and willingness to do whatever was needed to get this old home sold. The entire team from beginning to end- listing, selling, closing- were all top notch and it is easy to see that the Gusty Gulas Group is a name to recognize and remember. Christy made herself readily available, took the time to talk with me at length on several occasions to help make sure I was comfortable with all the decisions made and to get me top dollar for this old home that has had more than a few issues. I believe the buyer was just as happy with the end results as I was. Thanks again to Christy Simpson, I am a very happy and satisfied customer. - Ann Hershiser

It was a pleasure to have Kristen serve as our agent. She if professional, friendly and knowledgeable. She was accessible and “held our hands” from beginning to end. STAGING SETS THE STAGE. Get rid of your clutter but a few wellplaced items help a buyer feel at home and can even increase what they think the home is worth. Think about setting out a bowl of lemons or limes, a vase of fresh cut flowers or large coffee table books. LIGHT UP THE NIGHT. Turn on outdoor lights including your front porch light in case potential buyers drive by. Illuminating the front walk way is a nice touch as well, especially if showings are happening in the evening. LET US UPGRADE YOU. RIVALS FOR WISHES For one night, Make-A-Wish® asks the athletic greats and fans from both teams to come together for one common goal—one where the true winners are the children of the state of Alabama. There was fantastic tailgating food and an auction full of everything. There were wish kids who told about their granted wishes. Because of the participation and generosity of our 350 guests, we are excited to share that over $229,000 was raised at this year’s event!

1. Downtown Florence. 2. Sheffield and towards Tuscumbia. 3. Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. 4. Muscle Shoals
The Shoals area is an interesting little piece of Alabama located in the northwest corner of the state. It consists of several small towns that join together to form what is known as the Quad-Cities: Florence, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals. Many of the most famous Alabamians are from the area including, W.C. Handy and Helen Keller. Downtown Florence serves as the hub of the area with shopping (Billy Reid’s flagship store) and much of the area’s best dining and entertaining. If you are not familiar with the Muscle Shoals Sound, watch the documentary “Muscle Shoals” before coming to the Shoals (www.muscleshoalsthemovie.com) and you will see the amazing history of how so much fantastic music could come out of such a small place.
Friday Afternoon > Check into The Shoals Marriott, and relax poolside or in the spa. Or even better walk over and spend a while at the 360 Grill located at the Marriott. If you’ve never been to a revolving tower bar - it’s a must. Its tower rotates very, very slowly and offers great sunset veiws of the river. Friday Night > Head to Downtown Florence and walk the main strip and decide between City Hardware serving emerging American with a Southern accent or The Pie Factory’s funky pizzas. Saturday Morning > Breakfast in bed is always preferable. Then The First Lady of Courage, Helen Keller, was born in Tuscumbia. You can visit her home and see the actual water pump outside where she learned her first word: Wa-Wa. Beginning the first weekend of June every year, one can see an onsite production of “The Miracle Worker”- a play that tells the story of Helen and her teacher Annie Sullivan. The Helen Keller Festival will be June 20-26 (www.helenkellerfestival.com.) In Spring Park, you can visit craft and food vendors and hear live music. There are other events around town during the weekend. ABOUT

Lunch/Afternoon > Make the short way to Muscle Shoals. You will then want to take a tour of the studios - Fame Recording Studio that was started by Rick Hall, and the 2 locations of Muscle Shoals Soundthe original one on Jackson Highway in Sheffield and the second location that is now Cypress Moon Studios. (While at Cypress Moon, check to see if there are any upcoming concerts. You might luck out and see a show in the famous Studio A where Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and the like recorded.) The Alabama Music Hall of Fame is located in Tuscumbia, which is just a short drive from the studios. Before leaving Sheffield, grab a bite to eat. Ichiban serves some of the best sushi don’t let the location fool you. Their signature rolls are some of the best anywhere. Whether it’s your first or fiftieth time there, Jackie will greet you with a smile at the door. (The next time you come (because you WILL want to go back) will be even more welcoming, as he never forgets a face.) If sushi is not your thing, Champy’s is just down the road. The décor is reminiscent of an old Delta blues joint, and they always have live music on the patio.
More to See and Do > W.C. Handy, father of the blues, was born in Florence. Every year there is a music festival honoring him- July 22-31 (www.wchandymusicfestival.org). There is literally live music being played in every restaurant, in parks, on street corners, etc. Wilson Park in the center of downtown Florence is a hub for the festival that reaches the entire Shoals area.
Dinner & Drinks > Start the night at The Carriage in Downtown Florence, a locally owned wine bar, to have a pre-dinner drink and cheese board. Then make plans to try Odette’s around the corner. Since the strip is very walkable, grab drinks somewhere and dinner somewhere else.
Into architecture? Check out Frank Lloyd Wright’s Rosenbaum House. Built in 1940, it’s been called the purest example of the Usonian house concept, and is the famous architect’s only house in Alabama.
Clockwise from above: Ricatoni’s Italian Grill. Billy Reid’s flagship store. The huge pool at the Marriott. A letter written by Helen Keller. The view of the Tennessee River from the revolving 360 Bar and Grill. Trowbridge’s Ice Cream. Middle: W.C. Handy’s birthplace.

In western Colbert county, just outside of Tuscumbia, you can visit the Key Underwood Coon Dog Cemetery - the only one in existence. (Google to see history) Just down the road from the cemetery, you will find Rattlesnake Saloon. It is a restaurant built under a large rock that was once a shelter for Native Americans in the area. You can eat lunch or dinner and listen to some music under the rock. If you would like to take a hike, Cane Creek Nature Preserve is close by. Grab some ice cream at Trowbridge’s, a Florence institution where time has seemed to stand still.

The cornerstone of a well-thought-out design that form always follows function is what guides us through our everyday encounters. This is why we feel at ease when surrounded with deep blues or energetic with yellows. It is why we take our time on a slow meandering path or move quickly when confronted with straight lines and harsh angles.

But, we all have a little artist in us who wants to walk on the wild side and throw out conventional wisdom. Seasonal planters are the perfect way to let go and see what happens. From a blend of contemporary and traditional materials to the plants that they hold, they are our playground. With seasonal planters the pressure is off. You can try new plants and color combinations or go crazy with texture. They can provide a quick change of atmosphere for a gettogether or your own retreat for the world.
