THE BEST WAY TO BUILD YOUR BOTTOM

Lifting Heavy Is A Must

Do these make my butt look big?” This question, uttered by countless women throughout the years, has struck terror in the hearts of those being asked. Who would have thought that a girl would love to hear, “Yes, babe, it sure does!” The bubble butt is now a fitness goal for many women, but how can it be achieved? Unfortunately, genetics does play a role in the shape of one’s backside. Yet there are several glute building exercises that can be done to help shape, lift and firm the rear.

PROGRESSIVE STRENGTH TRAINING

Keep in mind if you are looking to build tone in the derriere, heavy weight must be used. Your goal should be to gradually build your strength so you can lift heavy. Use a progessive strength routine. Start light and then add weight each day. Each session add a small percentage of weight. Have you heard of Greek mythology’s Milo of Croton? According to legend, Milo trained by carrying a calf daily from its birth until it became a full-sized ox. So gradually as the ox grew, so did his strength.

FEWER REPS, HEAVIER WEIGHT

Instead of going through a usual weight routine of 3 sets of 10-12, do 5 sets of 5. The 5th repetition should not be easy and push you to your limit. Going heavy will not be easy if you’re not used to it. But more and more evidence is pointing towards the significant advantages that come from lifting heavy. It’s not just for men, but women as well.

STICK TO FUNDAMENTAL LIFTS

No need to waste too much time on gym machines. While they’re fine to supplement in, your lifts should revolve around the old-school basics. For your lower body, the 3 best lifts are squats, deadlifts and glute bridges. These exercises work so many muscles that really tax your body. Like all exercises, proper form is key. You have to have correct form especially when lifting heavy. Here’s what you need to know about each, keeping in mind, in all glute exercise your abs should be engaged and tightened.

SQUATS

1) Place a weighted bar on the meaty part of your back. 2) Feet slightly wider than hips, with toes slightly turned out. 3) With your weight in your heels, Sit down as if you are sitting in a chair. Booty down, back straight, knees tracking in line with your middle toes, chest lifted, belly in and abs braced. 4) Booty stops at knee level, pressing through heels, squeezing your booty on the way to the top.

DEADLIFTS

1) Grab your weighted bar thumb distance from your thighs, heels under hips, toes turned slightly out and knees soft. 2) Tip from the hip with a long spine squeezing a lemon in between your shoulder blades and elbows to the back of the room. 3) Act as if you are trying to shut a kitchen drawer with your backside making sure you squeeze your backside on the way to the top.

GLUTE BRIDGES (ADVANCED)

1) Facing up, position your shoulder blades perpendicular on a bench. Your feet flat on the floor with your knees bent. 2) Place desired weight on your hips, keeping it in place with your hands. 3) From a cocked position, lift your hips up. Squeeze your glutes and abs and drive your heels through the floor until your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees. 4) Pause and squeeze your glutes at the top then slowly return to the starting position. (This can be done with zero equipment, a dumbbell/plate on top of your thighs or a resistance band around your thighs.)

ARE YOU PROUD OF YOUR AGE?

I turned 40 last October, finally. It felt like it would never get here. I had heard so much about turning forty, being forty, feeling forty, the hill and being “over it” - like the entirety of my life was one big anticipation of this year, this age, and as soon as that 3-9 rolled over to 4-0, I would throat-punch feel it.

I sure do feel it. And I could not love it more. I want to be asked how old I am. Make assumptions and give me the chance to blow your mind - not because I might look a certain way, but because I feel a certain way - proud. I’m proud to be a part of this adult club. I’m proud to catalogue the experiences, log the stories, bear the beauty marks, skim the scars, and glean the goodness. This forty-year-old me is the best me. 2023 is the best me. I have decided what I’ll hold on to, and what I will release.

• I will hold onto listening to my body. I will take more days off, and rest more. I will stretch and massage and tend. I will let myself heal and recover, knowing I will feel better for it, head to toe.

• I will stop looking at my activity tracker so much. What does it even know about me, anyway?! I will be more focused on an active life, rather than a high-calorie-burn gym session. I will get outside more, with my kids and dogs, and live my life more physically.

• I will quit counting calories (mostly). I will fuel my body to perform the way I need and want it to.

• I will loosen the alcohol-consumption reigns. I will allow myself to libate with consideration, in moderation, or maybe not at all.

• I will hold onto an open mind and fluid nutrition “plan”. I will continue to try different trends and ideas if they seem interesting to me, and I will not feel bad or weird for it.

• I will hold onto this new appreciation and awe of my whole self - body, soul, and spirit. I will recall and recite more of the wonders of my physical body - its beauty and accomplishments, and less of the areas that need for improvement. I will embrace the eccentricities of my heart and mind that are my magic. I will live me proudly, maybe sometimes loudly, but certainly with all the quiet confidence - fueled and forged by this now-unconditional love-force that surges and seeps from the core-est of my core.

I’m so glad to be over that daggum hill. The climb was a journey - I’ve got stories for days. The back side, I’ve learned, is where the glory lies.

6 WAYS TO SWEETEN YOUR SUMMERTIME AT HOME

1. BOLD SUMMER BLOOMS

Nothing makes an impression like colorful Summer blooms. You can’t have too many flowers on your outdoor entertaining spaces. Brighten your patio or front door, and boost your happiness with seasonal potted flowers.

2. UPGRADE YOUR GRILL

Everyone seems to gather in the kitchen. Take your kitchen outdoors this summer where your guests will gather near the grill. Green Eggs are great. But check out the Blackstones. These propane powered giant skillets are great for eggs and bacon, fish and burgers. Another idea are pizza ovens. They range in price, but who doesn’t love pizza?

3. YEAH, BUT WHAT ABOUT BUGS?

Before your guests arrive connect a bug repellent to your water hose and spray the yard for a 24-48 hour effect. Or, set the scene by floating bug repellent scented candles in vases and incorporate citronella lanterns around your lawn.

4. BUT IT’S SO HOT.

Is it too hot for you? Create shade with a big statement making umbrella. Or, invest in an attractive and high quality outdoor fan (the misting options rocks!). Fans will also help keep bugs away.

5. HOW’S YOUR OUTDOOR FURNITURE?

The problem with outdoor furniture is that it’s outdoors, which means it has to face the elements 365 days a year. You can buy expensive stuff, and 1 year later it’s on it’s last leg. Think practical and attractive. Don’t want to spend a fortune? Update the cushions & pillows and bring in a pretty rug.

6. ENTERTAINMENT!

What is most important? Entertainment. Don’t forget your Bluetooth speaker or take it to the next level by installing an outdoor television. You’ll love it even more come Fall and college football season!

The summer season is here! That’s right, the time of swimsuits, sun screen, and a lot fewer clothes. This screwball comedy classic made a star of Cary Grant, as one-half of a feuding divorced couple (Irene Dunne plays his ex-wife) who can’t seem to stop meddling with each other’s post-marriage romances. It’s a non-stop stream of jokes and silly gags as the two, inevitably, discover they’re still meant for one another.

Any list like this is incomplete without Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant’s classic comedy, in which a daffy heiress puts one obstacle after another in the path of a forgetful paleontologist - including a pet leopard, a missing dinosaur bone, a fuzzy negligee and other impediments. It was shockingly not a hit in its day, but audiences have finally discovered how riotously funny this movie is from start to finish.

It’s Chris Farley. A coming-of-age story about a grown ass man, what’s not to love. I love his physical comedy and ability to be hilarious and innocent all at the same time. A cult classic in my book.

Cynical, dubious, sharply observant, earnestly mean spirited and ultimately a film in its own damn dedicated universe. So much fun... until it isn’t. I mention Ghost World as a gauge of surreal comedic reference weekly. Based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, it’s a wry gaze at the post-high school days of two underachieving best friends starring Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi.

This Zucker Brothers classic had to make the list for the sheer fact that so many one liners come from this singular movie. For starters: “Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.” “Roger Roger.” “And stop calling me Shirley.” Seeing so many otherwise straight-played characters come from Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen in earlier films is part of what sets Airplane! up for its perfectly earned humor-landing. The physical comedy portrayed will especially always be cherished.

5. 9 TO 5 (1980) Colin Higgins

An unexpected set of circumstances leads a trio of overworked, underappreciated and underpaid co-workers to join forces in an effort to take control from their predatory scoundrel of a boss. Featuring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin - what more could you want?! How about a fast pitched, dead-center, wholly riotous time capsule of a film? On one hand 9 to 5 is an amusingly ridiculous, often fantastical old-school comedy classic. On the other it’s a sharp shooting, keenly relevant proclamation that’s straight-up ahead of its time. On both it’s fun and funny as hell.

There’s a documentary on the list! While laughing with someone, versus at someone is a fine line, American Movie does a wonderful job of allowing viewers to do both. Part absurdist mockumentary and part true American tragedy, the film shows a perfect case example of a first time filmmaker biting off more than they can chew while also maintaining a truer-than-life account of the problematic nature of being a broke, aspiring creator. Best line, “I’m broke, I gotta get gas tomorrow and dudes talking about making a feature film.” – CHARLIE

Swap this out for any other film in the Coen brothers’ unique filmography if you wish, but their underrated, art deco-saturated modern screwball is a gem that perhaps you haven’t seen. Tim Robbins plays an amiable dupe promoted to a titan of industry by unscrupulous executive Paul Newman, who’s looking to tank his company’s stock. But when the new CEO proves to be an unexpected success, things go awry. Jennifer Jason Leigh co-stars as a fasttalking newspaper gal in a terrifically funny turn. – COREY CRAFT

This film is just as hilarious today as it was the first time I saw it. A simple and funny love story, with an amazing cast (all of the characters that Eddie Murphy plays!) and quotes to last a lifetime. “She’s your Queen-to-be. A Queen-tobe forever.” – T. MARIE KING

Two overachieving best friends pledge to make up for their nerdy ways by cramming all of the high-school partying they missed into one last night. With amazing energy from the first frame, Booksmart possesses one of the most important elements of a canonical comedy - it’s wholly rewatchable. Director Olivia Wilde proves that you don’t have to totally reinvent the teen-comedy wheel - you can drag it into the new era and still manage to offer a few surprises along the way. Don’t get me wrong. I love some of the fancy beers. I love sours, hoppy and hazy IPAs, you name it and I’m down. But sometimes, just like Jerome, I like a *beer.* Just gimme a simple, good ‘ol fashioned, adjective free beer. That’s where this Pilsner from Hi-Wire comes in. It is just a simple, excellent, uncomplicated *beer* and it is exactly what it should be.

WINE- CAVALLOTTO BARBERA D’ALBA, VIGNA CUCULO ‘18

This is to wine what Conecuh is to sausage. It is a ten out of ten, no notes. It also happens to be a perfect pairing with a grilled Conecuh sausage. Fire up the grill, sip on a Hi-Wire while those Conecuhs sizzle on the grates, and pull the cork on this perfectly delicious Barbera. I bet that you’ll enjoy this lineup many times this summer.
