A Rogue of One’s Own EVIE DUNMORE

Maybe you can judge a book by its cover. If you’re looking for a light-hearted rom-com then this is the book for you. Emily Henry, who brought us New York Times Bestseller Beach Read, is back with this tale of two best friends, Poppy and Alex, reconnecting on a trip after a disastrous vacation two years earlier. Will they? Won’t they? You’ll love the journey to those answers.

Looking for a little romance? If you loved Evie Dunmore’s book Bringing Down the Duke, you’ll love her second installment, A Rogue of One’s Own. Even if you’re not normally a fan of the romance genre, you will find Dunmore’s writing amusing and her characters endearing. NPR even called it “Rich with subplot, historical detail and beautifully descriptive writing that keeps the pages turning until the delightfully unconventional happy ending.”

BEING YOUR BEST YOU Claiming a Fit and Healthy Routine

Some of what you’ll find on

by: Leslie Dobbins

N

O MATTER WHAT I DO IN THE GYM OR THE KITCHEN, I will never be a six-foot blonde with long legs! With that being said, I realized along my fitness journey that I can only be a better version of myself than I was yesterday. I can remember being a younger woman and looking at various physiques I envied, thinking “If I do this or that, I will look like that!” Unfortunately, that is not the way that it works! I had to learn over time that genetics plays a large role in how each individual person is uniquely built, so we must embrace how our bodies are shaped. While we may occasionally envy the genetic blessings of others, we need to remember that we all have our own strengths gifted to us by our genes, and we can always work with what we were born with and make it look better!

Tips for becoming the best version of yourself: 1. You Against You!

In becoming a better version of one’s self, it is vital to focus on what works for you specifically! Compete with yourself and no one else. Let’s be honest, no one cares if you skip a workout. The only person you will hurt is yourself, so being your best self is all about showing up and pushing yourself a little bit more each workout. Find something you enjoy doing! If you hate to run, do not join a running group just because that is what your friends are doing.

Watch lifestyle, local and behind-the-scenes videos See ALL the party pics.

See previous issues & never miss an issue by ordering every issue to be mailed directly to your home.

2. Do Not Compare Yourself to Others!

You cannot look at someone whose body is built differently than yours and expect to look like that person. No matter what you do or how you eat, you will never gain or lose inches in height or bone structure! I can stretch until I’m blue in the face, but I’m still never going to be long-legged! We all have areas we wish to improve on our bodies. Focus on highlighting your assets while working to make progress in your more difficult areas, and you will find a better version of yourself in no time.

3. Still Eat What You Love!

From keto to plant-based to paleo, it is important to not impulsively jump on the diet fad band wagon of the season expecting a dramatic change in your body! Continue to eat foods you enjoy while learning to make healthier choices. If you are a massive carnivore, going vegan will not cut it for you! If you have a sweet tooth, it is not realistic to cut out sweets completely. Learn how to eat in moderation and find better, healthier options for what you crave the most.

Getting Your Body to the Next Level

Dr. Gunn will select between 2 to 4 large, flat handpieces placed on your skin over the area to be treated.

Dr. Holly Gunn highlights the benefits of this cutting edge technology- PHYSIQ.

> BENEFITS

Summer is here and with that comes all of the outdoor activities and events that we’ve been looking forward to. If the past year left you struggling to stay in shape, there are breakthroughs in cosmetic dermatology, including non-surgical body contouring that can help you achieve the physique you’re looking for.

PHYSIQ is a unique treatment that can destroy fat over a series of 5 treatments and is less expensive than CoolSculpting. It can also build muscle just like EMSCULPT with the extra benefit of tightening the skin too.

> ABOUT PHYSIQ PHYSIQ body contouring uses a combination of heat and energy to reduce fat, tighten skin and tone muscle, and get your body to that “next level.” PHYSIQ targets problem areas for optimal, natural-looking results with no downtime.

> HOW IT WORKS PHYSIQ is a muscle building, fat-reducing, and skin tightening device. It is the only device in the US to utilize STEP technology (Sequential Thermal & Electrical Pulse) by incorporating both electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) and a superluminescent diode matrix (SDM) laser to build muscle. By delivering both energies from each of its four applicators, PHYSIQ provides the variable stimulation to maximize results in a comfortable, no downtime treatment. PHYSIQ was designed so that multiple areas, even small body parts, can be targeted.

Dr. Holly Gunn MD FAAD at Gunn Dermatology in Crestline Village offers Dermatology care for all ages and specializes in medical, surgical, cosmetic and laser Dermatology. She can be contacted at 205-649-3366. ABOUT

- Builds Muscle - Destroys Fat - Tightens Skin - Decreases crepey skin on the body - No Pain - No Downtime - Immediate and Long Term Results - It can be used on the abs, flanks, arms, legs, inner and outer thighs and buttocks.

> WHAT TO EXPECT The procedure takes between 15-30 minutes, depending on the area to be treated. Both muscle stimulation and fat reduction can be performed simultaneously or separately. The fat reduction feels like a warm sensation that can feel hot but not painful. The muscle stimulation feels like a comfortable muscle contraction similar to working out. Duration is 30 min to 3 hours in clinic depending on the number of areas to be treated. Recommended Sessions: The initial series is 5 treatments every two weeks. More sessions can be utilized if desired. Some may desire to continue muscle building without fat reduction. The treatment sessions are customizable.

> AFTER-TREATMENT CARE A post-treatment care plan will be suggested for you to use for at least 2 weeks after the treatment. Most patients are able to go back to all activities immediately after the treatment. However, you may have some mild muscle tenderness that can last 1-5 days. 14 T O W N

I get to come to work everyday at the best place ever. The Bell Center staff is made of a group of women who pour their hearts into serving babies and children with special needs. The support and encouragement given to families of these children is often life changing. Parents often show up unsure of what the future holds for their child. On a daily basis I get to see therapists and families celebrate big and small accomplishments of a child. What a blessing to be a small part of this process!”

We are excited to share that Mitchell’s Place is expanding! In order to serve all families on the autism spectrum and relieve our waitlist, we have leased space on Arlington Avenue in Southside. It will open May 17th and will operate as an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Outpatient clinic, for now. Mitchell’s Place is hopeful to add other services in the near future. As we are able to offer more services, we let families involved know. Mitchell’s Place is overjoyed to spread our wings and serve more families! The new location allows Mitchell’s Place to expand and grow at a manageable pace. The new location will be called MP Southside. The best thing happening at PreSchool Partners is that we’ve just graduated our 26th class of four-year-olds and are sending them off to kindergarten ready for success. PROMOTION

5 Ways to Have Your Best Smile by: Dr. Paul Koch at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry

Dr. Paul Koch gives expert tips on how to get the smile you’ve always wanted.

3. Botox or dermal fillers for gummy smiles: Long or enlarged

It’s natural to want a beautiful smile. After all, your smile is often the first thing that people see upon meeting, and a vibrant smile can help create a great first impression. Fortunately, today there are plenty of cosmetic and restorative procedures to enhance and beautify your smile

gum tissue, known as gingival hypertrophy, can result in a gummy smile. A gummy smile can easily and effectively be treated with Botox. The upper lip that is relaxed with Botox no longer contracts or elevates as much when smiling. The treatment is incredibly effective, and the results usually last 3 months.

1. Teeth Whitening: A beautiful, bright smile can reflect a self-confi-

dence that makes others want to be around you. Unfortunately, teeth yellow with age and can also become stained by some foods, drinks, and tobacco.

4. Porcelain veneers: Looking for that movie-star smile? Porcelain

One of the fastest and easiest cosmetic dental options for brightening your smile is teeth whitening. There are multiple options from custom at-home kits to KöR Whitening.

veneers are a wonderful option that allows patients to improve or change their smiles without extensive surgery. One’s smile is often the first trait that people notice, and bright porcelain veneers are a simple option that helps patients find the beautiful smile they’ve always wanted. Custom-designs are available for each porcelain veneer to create a natural, youthful smile that fits your features, gender, and personality.

2. Teeth Straightening: When people think of braces or getting

teeth straightened, they typically think of metal brackets and wires that are unattractive, can impede speech, cause discomfort and can make some self-conscious about their smile. Invisalign clear braces are a great alternative to straighten your teeth and improve your smile by using a series of invisible braces that are removable aligners. Want to start sharing a whiter smile? Ask about Zoom Whitening in concert with Invisalign Braces.

5.

Lift mouth sagging and smooth lip lines: Solid Filler PDO smooth thread therapy is a technique that stimulates natural collagen production while offering an immediate lift to facial areas plagued by lines and wrinkles. It can increase facial volume and can also help improve lip and smile lines. These tiny threads can be used in conjunction with dermal fillers, solid filler lifting PDO threads and Botox injections, or they can be used as a standalone service

Lip Love Would lip fillers work for you? Now that we’re all coming out from under our masks, many are looking to perfect their pout.

~ Is there down-time?

Remember a time when you could tell if someone was smiling or not? A time when you used to actually wear lipstick or gloss?

There may be slight swelling or bruising immediately after the injections for some. But this should subside within the first 24-48 hours after the injections. It usually takes about two weeks for the filler to settle in for the look you’re going for.

Well, that time is back. As we roll through 2021 and start to shed our masks more often, we realize how much we’ve missed the emotional communication that comes from being able to see each other’s mouths. Many are also looking to improve the appearance of their lips now that they’re on full display again.

~ How long do lip fillers last? Every person is different and it varies by how quickly one’s body breaks down the filler, but most will last for between 6 and 18 months.

So go buy that favorite lipstick you haven’t been able to wear for a year. Pay more attention to your lip skincare - try a lip scrub occasionally for exfoliation and be sure and use sunscreen now that your lips are more exposed to the sun. But, if you’re looking for additional volume, you may want to consider lip fillers. We spoke with Dr. Julie Harper of Dermatology and Skin Care Center of Birmingham who noted that “most people seeking lip fillers do not want to look overdone - they just want a natural looking lip with some added volume.”

~ Are the results reversible? If after two weeks, you’re not happy with the result, in most cases, your doctor can give injections of hyaluronidase and can usually adjust or dissolve the filler.

EltaMD Lip Balm, SPF 31

This creamy, long-lasting moisturizing sunscreen soothes and protects dry, chapped and sun-exposed lips. Available at Skin Bar Boutique, Dermatology and Skin Care Center of Birmingham.

The most important decision to make in regards to lip fillers is using a skilled, board certified physician. Skip the spa or beauty salon for this treatment.

~What are lip fillers? As we age, our bodies begin to produce less collagen, and our lips are one of the first places to notice that loss as they start to look thinner. Most lip fillers, like Juvederm, are made of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the skin. Because hyaluronic acid stores moisture, injectable lip fillers are able to give skin a plump and hydrated look. ABOUT

Modern Mix by : Cathy Nagi

How one couple blended modern architecture with contemporary style for their unique family home.

Designed and built by homeowner Allen Stringfellow of MidSouth Lumber Company, with landscape design by Stuart Trowbridge of Quality Creative Landscaping, this modern home is perfectly suited for the tree-filled street that it sits on.

The kitchen island and perimeter cabinets below countertop level are all enamel finished in a nearly black color that draws attention to the countertops and views above. Designer Shea Bryars and owner Amanda Stringfellow eliminated the need for hardware and chose to have all drawers and cabinets push to open/close in order to keep a clean, linear look.

W

hen you drive up to Amanda and Allen Stringfellow’s modern Mountain Brook home, you would never guess its traditional origins as a single story, cedar-shingled house built in 1955. “We used to live in Cahaba Heights, and we would drive around on Sundays trying to figure out where we wanted to be. The house next door to this one was for sale, and we ended up being the back-up offer” recalls Amanda.

And who better to handle the design than the homeowner? Allen, having worked with the architecture firm Henry Sprott Long & Associates in high school and then initially studying architecture at Auburn University, not only designed the home but also oversaw the construction. “Looking back, the house was really a teardown, but we had a plan to make use of the existing bones and stuck to it over the years doing small to medium renovations as funds allowed us to keep up with our expanding numbers.”

Luckily, when that house didn’t work out, their current home came on the market just a few weeks later, and all of the pieces fell into place. “We just loved this street and even when we were looking at that first house, I really loved the house next door,” Amanda remembers. Surrounded by trees and beautiful green foliage and with an incredible ridgeline view, the Stringfellows saw the potential of what the traditional house could be and began plans to transform it into the modern beauty that it is today.

After purchasing the house in 2006, and with their family growing and a need for more space, Allen and Amanda would eventually stage four renovations - the last one being the largest. The first renovation in 2007 included adding a 2 car garage with a suite above to allow Amanda’s parents, who live out of town, to come and stay comfortably. In 2011, they added a swimming pool along with a huge retaining wall to give the property a usable backyard for the couple’s two boys and one more on the way.

Upon entry to the home, guests are greeted with this comfortable seating arrangement with views outside and of artwork by Allen’s mother, Shirley Anne Stringfellow, above the staircase.

Amanda’s office provides the zen space that she needs to work in throughout the day. “This is my favorite part. I have a clean, straight shot into the yard, and my youngest brought me a bird feeder so I can see birds outside my window.”

The third renovation in 2014 entailed filling in the old rear screened porch to create a more spacious family room. For the final and largest renovation, begun in 2018, Allen brought his modernist vision to fruition by tearing the house down to its foundation, adding a second story and huge floor-to-ceiling windows, and creating the open, light spaces that you find today upon entering the home. Despite the large scale changes, the Stringfellows chose to work within the original foundation blueprint including keeping the original chimney that now shines in the keeping room. When asked about their decision to renovate in stages, Amanda reflects, “I don’t regret the way we did it at all. We took it down to the ground, but we kept the basic floorplan.

ABOUT

38 T O W N

When we were planning, we were asking ourselves ‘what do we want to change?’ We loved what we’d done, but how do we make it work with what we’re about to do?” Just as Allen had been the perfect person to design the overall concept of the house, Amanda was in the perfect position to help compose the interiors with designer Shea Bryars who she works with as an assistant. Amanda wanted to keep the interiors clean but comfortable for their family of five - including 3 sons now aged 15, 13, and 10. White walls in Sherwin Williams Pure White provide a crisp backdrop for the Stringfellow’s impressive art collection - including standout pieces of colorful, hand-cut linoleum prints made by Allen’s mother, Shirley Anne Stringfellow, who studied Art at the University of Alabama in the 1970s.

Scott is a dear old friend, and I knew he would be the perfect person to call when I was looking for a new home. His background in law might be one of the reasons he is so meticulous, organized, and well prepared. He made sure nothing was overlooked on every appointment and always had all the information I needed on every listing we viewed. Aside from being smart, kind, honest and a true gentleman; Scott is knowledgeable about the Birmingham market, and was patient with me as I was shopping for something very specific. I would highly recommend Scott to you whether buying or selling because he makes it a fun experience and he gets the job done - to put it simply, ‘He’s on it!’” Lindsey Porter

With a custom steel base fabricated by Matt Carroll, the dining room table features a top designed and built by the homeowner and his oldest son.

Woods found in the kitchen’s white-oak cabinetry, the staircase’s reclaimed heart-pine, and the family room’s custom coffee table all create a feeling of warmth while also giving a nod to Allen’s role as a fifth generation owner of his family’s lumber company, Mid-South Lumber Co., Inc. Shea and Amanda chose design accents of dark gray and green to bring the outdoors in and create a clean but comfortable environment for the family. What began as a Sunday drive in 2006, now stands as a testament to one family’s thoughtful renovation of a home that both looks to the future while still retaining elements of its past. Queen of the Caftan How Susan Dumas turned her love of vintage clothing into a business.

I

f you’ve never been to one of Susan Dumas’ vintage clothing shows, then you are missing out. Her clients travel from all over the Southeast just to join in the fun and come away with pieces of fashion history while having a blast doing it. What first started out as a personal love of vintage clothing has turned into a thriving business with clients from all over the country, and her customers come back season after season to peruse her latest finds. And if you’ve seen her around town in one of her fabulous caftans, you know that she’s her own best model. We spoke with Susan just days before a show and found her to be just as fun and vibrant as her clothing. INSPIRATION My obsession with vintage clothing started when I laid eyes on this extra-wide, brown leather hand-tooled belt that had been my mom’s in her 30s. After living in my purple Guess jeans for so long, I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Then my sister gave me a caftan that had been her mother-in-law’s in the 60s, and it was all over. I wore it to a Halloween Widespread show and felt like a queen. I started looking for vintage clothes anywhere I could find them then. I knew that you could never catch me in a normal outfit again because I just really, really like to wear things that make me feel like me. I have a hippie soul that thinks the 60s and 70s should have been my decades. I love the vivid colors and psychedelic prints of the 70s. I love the groovy, double knit polyester of the 60s - never loses its color and doesn’t have to be dry cleaned. Low maintenance.

TURNING A PASSION INTO A BUSINESS It actually wasn’t my idea to turn it into a business. It was my postman Jeff’s idea. He looked at me one day and said “you know, you have a really interesting style. Why don’t you sell some of your clothes on eBay?” When you buy vintage clothes from the internet, the first 2 fit you and the next 6 don’t. So I had been left with all of these gorgeous, vintage clothes that didn’t fit me. I took Jeff’s advice and started an Etsy shop. With my sister’s help, we posted them, and people actually bought them. I was floored. People from Birmingham were buying them. Others in town wanted to try on the clothes before buying them so I decided to have a show. I did not know if anyone would come, or if I would write it off as a bust. But so many people came!! So I stopped doing Etsy and just started doing the home shows.

DR. CELIA DAVENPORT Dr. Celia Davenport has had at least one dentist in the family since before the turn of the 20th century, but as owner of Davenport Dental & Wellness Center, she is the first female dentist in the family. Celia and her staff at Davenport Dental & Wellness Center differentiate themselves by promoting a holistic approach to dental health care, acknowledging that oral health affects the whole body. The clinic offers traditional dental care, utilizing state-ofthe-art technology to provide the best in both preventative and restorative dentistry. Near the end of 2020, Davenport expanded the clinic to include a number of aesthetic services such as facials, Botox and dermal fillers. “We will always be a dental office first,” Davenport said. “We want to make sure that you as a whole are healthy, and the aesthetics become part of that because it can improve one’s confidence and self-esteem.” DAVENPORT DENTAL is

conveniently located in the Lakeview district on Clairmont Avenue South. We also have on-site parking, which is a rare commodity in our neighborhood. Just look for the big tooth in our front yard!

CLOTHING SHOWS I think the nicest, coolest, most interesting, most authentic people like vintage clothes. As far as the shows go, my theory is that sometimes women get in a grind of just making things work for their families, jobs, and general responsibilities. These shows provide a place for women to find something that makes them feel unique and special while surrounded by like-minded people. It’s so cool when someone comes out of their fittingroom to show everyone (mostly people they don’t know) their dress. Everyone gets so excited and ooos-and-ahs and encourages them to “definitely get that one”. It is just a place of camaraderie and friendship and being “in it” together. People that see my posts on Instagram from out-of-town always ask how they can get clothes. And I tell them that they just have to make a trip to the Magic City because as much as I love the clothes, I love the people in them at the shows. That’s why I do it. And that’s why I love it!

STYLE AND CLOTHING COLLECTIONS I mainly buy vintage American caftans, Middle Eastern caftans, black tie dresses, Mexican Puebla dresses, blouses, secretary dresses, jumpsuits, Hawaiian designer dresses, skirts, palazzo pants and accessories all from the 1960s and 1970s. I love lots and lots and lots of color but other than that, anything goes. I would say my biggest inspiration is American style icon, Iris Apfel. My favorite quote of hers is “I say, dress to please yourself. Listen to your inner muse and take a chance. Wear something that says ‘Here I am today’”. BUYING VINTAGE I have been doing this for five years so I have begun to find brands to buy that are well-made and unique. Vintage clothes usually run a lot smaller than contemporary clothing so I am always looking for bigger sizes so normal people can wear them. I search for size, brand and then I just go with my gut. If something looks like I could feel sassy in it, I go for it. The beauty of my business is that I get to buy whatever looks cool no matter the size. It will fit someone! May We Suggest

Some Picks from About Town

We asked. You answered. So we thought we’d share some of our favorites around town.

The best sushi in town is at Samurai Japan in the Vestavia City center. Don’t be confused. It’s new and in the former spot of Sekisui, a different Japanesse restaurant. Try the Pink Mountain Roll. Best roll in town.

The best quick lunch downtown is at Dos Hermanos Taco Truck parked in from of the Innovation Depot. And if you’re not a wimp, you’ll order the shrimp ceveche, which is one of the cheapest, best and (we’re saying it) freshest dishes in town. And it costs less than $5.

The best margarita in mix and also the easiest, and probably the healthiest is Tres Agaves Organic. About $9. Add 2 parts mix, and 1 part tequila. That’s it. (Add a touch of triple sec if you like it a bit sweeter.) Sold at The Pig.

The best summertime cocktail in Bham is the The Original Daiquiri at Cayo Coco. So simple. Limes, sugar, white rum.

Looking for a classic summertime excursion with a friend, family or date? The Grand River Drive-In in Leeds is the ticket. And the tickets are only $8 for adults and $5 for kiddos, and that’s for 2 films.

The best salad dressing in town is the house vinegrette at Markarios. Yes, we said the salad dressing at Markarios. It’s so good we’ve picked some up for a dinner party.

Beyond a bank. Beyond expectation. At Bryant Bank, we know our communities need a partner who understands their goals and their strengths, their desires and their destinations. By investing time and effort along with hardearned dollars and solid common sense, we’re making better expectation. for us all. It’s more from a Bankinglife beyond bank than might be expected, but doing more than is expected is what we do every day.

The Top 10 Best Movie Endings of All Time Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema and Festival creative director Rachel Morgan and cinema programmer Corey Craft weigh in on their favorite cinematic endings.

Such is in large part thanks to its unforgettable, straight-up jaw dropper of an ending - especially fun for anyone who had the good fortune of catching it on the big screen during its theatrical run. This one goes down fast so don’t look away or you’ll miss it. – RACHEL

7. A SERIOUS MAN (2009) — dir. Joel and Ethan Coen

T

he Sixth Sense, Psycho, Casablanca, Lost in Translation... we know, they’re all great, but here’s our current and ever-changing list of great movie endings. For more movie ending antics with Rachel & Corey check out episode #66 of the official Sidewalk Podcast, SIDETALKS: on Spotify or sidewalkfest.com/ class/sidetalks-podcast/

10. JAWS (1975) Steven Spielberg “Smile, you son of a—” shouts Chief Brody (Roy Scheider), and with one final lucky shot, he hits the compressed air tank in the mouth of the killer great white shark currently rushing his way. Boom! The shark explodes, the threat is vanquished, and audiences everywhere burst into spontaneous applause — because no matter how many times you see it, Spielberg’s ultimate summer blockbuster has never been bested for pure entertainment, up to its deeply satisfying explosive conclusion. – COREY

9. AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999) Sam Mendes Yes, the film is problematic (perhaps debatable) and in recent years critics have retracted their love for the movie. But, while it might not fully redeem AMERICAN BEAUTY, I stand that the film’s ending, albeit very, very dramatic, contains one of the most universally breathtaking landings of all time; the last line in particular. – RACHEL

8. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999) Daniel Myrick,

Eduardo Sánchez

While now overshadowed and watered down by parodies and copycats, upon its release THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was extremely innovative and exciting.

The Coen brothers have a thing for non-endings — sudden cuts to the credits that make you think “that’s it?” — but none is more powerful than the ending to their 2009 dark comedy about a modern Job figure (Michael Stulhbarg) whose life is spinning out of control. Is it because he has done something wrong and deserves punishment? Is it because the universe is cruel and random? The ending doesn’t answer these questions, but instead further afflicts his family as a fearsome tornado whirls through in the final seconds. Cut to black. – COREY

6. SAY ANYTHING (1989) Cameron Crowe Speaking of THE GRADUATE (which you will find further down the list)... The ending of SAY ANYTHING is a self-aware and thoroughly more cheery response to the famous “We won! ...now what?” ending of THE GRADUATE. It simultaneously presents homage and retort vibes and yet stands as a great ending even without the cinematic knowledge required to enjoy it fully. Considering such, SAY ANYTHING and THE GRADUATE make for a great double feature.– RACHEL MORGAN

5. CITY LIGHTS (1931) Charles Chaplin The best of Chaplin’s Little Tramp comedies is 1931’s beautiful romantic comedy CITY LIGHTS, in which our silent comedic hero befriends a drunken suicidal millionaire and falls in love with a blind flower girl. At the film’s end, the Tramp goes to prison, having been accused of stealing the money he gave to the girl for a vision-restoring surgery. His reunion with her upon his release — and her realization that her benefactor was not who she thought — culminates in one of the most emotionally potent final shots in cinema history. – COREY ABOUT

66 T O W N

Presented by SIDEWALK 4. BOOGIE NIGHTS (1997) Paul Thomas Anderson Yeah, I’m going there. One of the most provocative movie endings of all time! If you somehow haven’t seen BOOGIE NIGHTS try and guess how it ends: the film is a look at the porn industry of the 1970s and ‘80s as it was impacted by the move from film to video and a profile of particularly well-endowed star Dirk Diggler, played by Marky Mark Wahlberg. Spoiler (on multiple levels): It’s a prosthetic. – RACHEL

3. BEAU TRAVAIL (1999) Claire Denis Claire Denis’ masterpiece transposes Herman Melville’s novella “Billy Budd, Sailor” to the deserts of Djibouti, as a French Foreign Legion officer (Denis Lavant) grows envious of a handsome new recruit (Gregoire Colin). The film traces his tragic downfall as his jealousy — and possibly a repressed attraction — ruins his beloved career. How else would it conclude but with a whirling dance sequence to Corona’s “The Rhythm of the Night” in a nightclub? It’s one of the most breathtaking endings of all time. – COREY

2. THE FLORIDA PROJECT (2017) Sean Baker Shot on location at the Magic Castle Inn and Suites in Orlando, THE FLORIDA PROJECT is steeped in subtext and the emotion-charged ending contributes heavily to such. Semi-spoiler: While the majority of the film was shot on glorious 35mm, in order to crash Disney, the bold middle-finger ending was shot with a micro crew using an iPhone 6S Plus phone. – RACHEL

1. THE GRADUATE (1967) Mike Nichols No surprise here! The single greatest “We won! ...now what?” ending of all time, aimless graduate Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) has just ruined the wedding of Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross), his true love — and the daughter of the married woman (Anne Bancroft) he’s idly been having an affair with. Fighting away her family, the two dart onto a public bus, and sitting in the back, their victorious smiles slowly fade to ennui as Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” plays on the soundtrack. – COREY

GOOD TASTE

PROMOTION

By: Scott Atkinson, Wine Manager at PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE

Three of the Best We at the Piggly Wiggly are very honored that you chose us as the best wine shop around. Our peers are pretty dang good, so to be selected as the Best of the Best is a strong compliment. And not only do we not take it lightly, but we will not rest on our laurels. We will try even harder to maintain our place as number one. Now, just for fun, a few wines that we consider to be among the best:

SAL DE TERRA ALBARIÑO:

2018

With summer upon us and the world beginning to open up again, it would be remiss of me not to call attention to this fantastic Albariño from Sal da Terra. It is the perfect wine to enjoy with dinner at the beach! I’ve always been a fan of Albariño but this one is particularly outstanding. While offering a distinct salinity it also shows notes of citrus and stone fruits. This goes perfectly with almost any fish dinner but I especially recommend it if you’re having crab cakes! – Lillian Mears

Over the past year or two, our market’s interest in natural wines has increased significantly. In particular, we have been getting a lot of questions about orange wines, or white wines that are macerated on the skins and usually fermented and aged in ceramic vessels. These wines offer fascinating texture, unique flavors, and an ideal pairing with a cheese board on the patio. My personal favorite is Costador’s Orange de Noirs, a blend of indigenous Spanish varieties aged in ceramic amphora and French oak barrels. The wine opens up with a funky freshness of peach blossom and wildflower on the nose that leads to citrus and honeysuckle on the pallet. I’ll be drinking this all summer long; I hope you’ll enjoy a bottle or two as well! – Thomas Warren

ORANGE DE NOIRS:

LIMERICK LANE

ZINFANDEL, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY:

Zinfandel is *the* American grape. Nobody does it better than we do in the USA, and Limerick Lane is one of the best producers we see. The Bilbro family are Zinfandel royalty. Chris Bilbro started Marietta Cellars and passed it onto his sons. Scot Bilbro is running the helm at Marietta while his brother Jake is making magic happen at Limerick Lane. This Russian River bottling is the perfect match with a summer BBQ. There are few things better than some perfectly prepared ribs and a bottle of Limerick Lane Zinfandel on a summer night. Ribs are the best. Zinfandel is the best. The pairing is the level best – Scott Atkinson
