HEALTHY SKIN IS BEYOND BEAUTIFUL. Mercedes, Concert Fan
Like all young girls, I couldn’t wait to wear make-up. Now, I love not wearing make-up! I always had trouble with acne, and no middle-school girl wants to struggle with their appearance. My transformation with Dr. Hartman began with chemical peels, acne regimen, and Skincuetical products. I also use Tazorac for my oily skin. My current go-to product is to always use sunscreen. Not covering my skin with make-up has given me so much freedom to do all things I want to do.
Tanslee, Student I’m a dancer and have spent much of my high school years in heavy make-up for performances. As a result of this and the fact that my skin is very sensitive to soft drinks and greasy foods, breakouts were becoming a daily problem. Dr. Hartman put me on a benzoyl peroxide face wash that I use twice daily, and my results have been amazing! I now never wear make-up, and I love it!
Jahzmin, Crossfit Lover
Metta, Nurse Practitioner
I never had acne growing up. It wasn’t until I graduated from college, got my first big girl job and started Crossfit when I started to notice that “wow, I have acne…and its out of control.” I mean, it was incredibly painful, not to mention so unappealing. Not sure if Crossfit really did change my complexion, because I’ve always thought I had a pretty healthy diet. However, I am certain it did contribute due to the changes in my hormones and estrogen. I started researching and seeing dermatologists around the Birmingham area, many wanted to immediately place me on antibiotics and to purchase expensive topical creams, without explaining to me what was actually going on with my face. After trying spironolactone, and other prescription drugs, I felt like I was at a loss. That’s when I heard of Dr. Corey Hartman, who is incredible, might I add. Dr. Hartman informed me that I have cystic acne. Cystic acne is when the infection goes deep into your skin, creating a red, tender bump that is painful. Although it sounds horrible, it is actually likely for men and women to develop in their teens and early 20’s. He suggested a face regimen, an antibiotic to control the inflammation, facial cleaner, and moisturizer. The results have been amazing!
My skin was great until last Summer when all of the sudden I developed adult acne. I went to three other dermatologists with no success. Growing up, I received compliments about my complexion all the time, so my sudden acne really made me that much more insecure. It became so bad, that I was avoiding eye-contact with people, and even went so far as to not look over at the car next to me at stop lights! I’ve always been a health conscience individual who eats well, exercises regularly, and washed my face every day. To try to help my skin, I went gluten, sugar, and dairy free, but it didn’t help. Finally, I saw Dr. Hartman who took a very individualized approach to my skin, and I’ve never felt more confident!

ASK AN EXPERT
There seems to be so much ‘perceived’ chaos in politics at the moment. Is this affecting interest rates? “When you talk about politics and interest rates, yes, there is certainly a strong correlation. Financial markets rarely react favorably to any political or economic uncertainty. However, interest rates have been and remain near record lows. That’s one positive in the midst of any political ‘chaos’, and today’s more savvy homebuyers are making a smart move to take advantage of the lower interest rates while they last.”

My Friend is a Hypocrite! >>> I have a good friend who is, for lack of a nicer term, a hypocrite. She loves to give advice, but is always the first person to do the exact opposite of what she says you should do. How do I talk to her about this? It gets very frustrating interacting with her and I’m afraid I might blow up at her soon! Unfortunately, hypocrites will always exist in our world! If I had to guess, most of us are a little guilty of that ourselves...eek! We are, however, given the power to choose whether or not we keep them there. You mention that she is a good friend. No need to blow up at her! I do really like to think that people can change! My profession probably wouldn’t exist, if that weren’t actually true, or at least hoped for by people. Instead of blowing up at her or just writing her off, which is what some people might choose, you should talk to her! Talking to her may or may not do any good. However, I can almost guarantee that she will not change at all, unless someone helps her become aware of this really annoying thing that she does! You need to go into the conversation being very aware that she may become upset or completely disagree with what you were saying! The conversation needs to be kind and gentle with you giving her some specific examples of instances in which this has happened. If you think she gives good advice, you should inquire as to why she chooses not to take her own advice.
photo: Erica Kay Photography
If she chooses not to change, the decision to remain friends is yours. She might be a really great friend at the moment, but you might need to put some distance between the two of you. Maybe you take her advice for what it is, and choose to utilize the good parts even when she doesn’t! Many people in this world are more about “do as I say not as I do”…That does not necessarily mean what they say is bad advice!
>>> I’m recently divorced and have started to casually date again. I wasn’t looking for anything serious at all, but I met a great guy (who is also recently divorced) and I really like him! I don’t want to get too serious too fast because I am a little scared of getting hurt again so soon. How do I play it cool? What exactly do you mean by playing it cool? Sometimes honesty really is the best policy. You don’t want to push him away by making him think you aren’t interested! You both ARE recently divorced. That leaves the potential for emotions to be raw and/or high! However, there is no magic number of days, months, or years that determine when someone is ready to date again after a divorce. Many people have been separated for significant periods of time before a divorce is actually final. ABOUT
10 T O W N
Some marriages are extremely unhealthy, and people might not be ready for anything serious for quite some time. This same factor might mean that they are ready sooner than most. Communication is key! Use your voice. If you think you really like this person, don’t be afraid to tell them or ask for what you want. Obviously, try to “read” the person. Some signals are really clear that a person isn’t ready. Don’t ignore those. Use your better judgement.Evaluate your own readiness level. I have seen people marry quickly after divorce and live happily ever after! Don’t let a “good one” slip thru your fingers because you felt you needed to “play it cool.” If you’d like to ask an anonymous question to Dr. Misty, please email it to: info@abouttownsite.com

What is the cost? CoolSculpting is priced based on the number of applicators a patient needs. We offer a progressive discount on the treatment regimen; the more applicators a patient purchases, the more discount they receive. Because CoolSculpting is a completely customized treatment that varies from patient to patient, a complimentary consultation is required. Pricing is determined at the consultation visit. We accept Care Credit for those who prefer a more flexible payment method.
Why should I choose CoolSculpting over other cosmetic procedures I may be considering? CoolSculpting is easy and effective! No downtime, no compression garments, no time off of work! It is a permanent treatment that yields, on average, a 20% reduction in fat deposits. CoolSculpting is a great option for patients that have plateaued with their weight loss and exercise regimen, as well as those that don’t have time to exercise. It works well on people of all ages and body types who have fat that can be easily pinched! Our applicators are the newest; allowing treatment times to be as little as 35 minutes. Forecast is located at 1707 28th Ave S. The salon interior, by Black Design Architecture, is inspired by Mid-Century Modern design with some custom pieces created by Homewood’s Soho Retro. Brandino Brass created the exterior lighting and door hardware and Duncan Designs was the contractor for the overall construction of the building. SignAGE created our exterior signs and the beautiful metal sign that greets every client as they arrive. Every detail was hand chosen by Mark and Brittany - it was important to have a modern environment for all of their guests to feel at home.
Mark Hyde
Brittany McNaughton
Born in Birmingham, Mark took a part-time job at a modeling agency while in high school. He began styling hair and applying makeup on the models and it came very natural to him, like he had always had the talent. He decided to go to hair school immediately after finishing high school and that’s how his journey began.
Born in Birmingham, Brittany has been doing hair since she was young. It was in her blood, although, her retail career as a Regional Director took her to Chicago and eventually back to Birmingham. As she focused on what would really make her happy, she realized she had to follow her dream as a child to become a stylist. She attended the Aveda Institute Birmingham, graduated as the #1 student in the school and within 3 years she was one of the top stylists in the Birmingham area.
Quickly after graduating Wynona’s International School of Cosmetology in Homewood he became a success and has been one of Birmingham’s most successful stylists. Since working at 2 of Birmingham’s elite salons, it was always his desire to open his own business. Mark loves his 2 dogs, his mid-century Modern Home and is the proud co-owner of Forecast.
Brittany lives in her downtown loft, enjoys impromptu gatherings with friends and is the proud co-owner of Forecast.
Forecast has state of the art technology never before seen in Birmingham. The importance of lighting is critical to ensure the right color and a precise cut so the investment into Freestyle Systems Spectra Lights was essential. The lights give the appearance of actual sunlight so that the guests see what they see when they walk out the door. Also installed is Freestyle’s Weightless Blow Drying System. The system suspends the dryer from above and supports the total weight of the dryer so that it’s easier for the stylist to maneuver. When in use the dryer feels like it’s floating.
State of the Art
Forecast has chosen Kevin Murphy - Skincare for Your Hair for their main retail line and hair color. Kevin Murphy products are weightlessly designed to deliver performance, strength and longevity. All KM Products are sulfate and paraben free plus cruelty free - never to be tested on animals. Forecast has partnered with local icon, Liesa Cole, for all of our salon, staff and creative photography, something we are very proud of.

Can’t Live Without Beauty Product: I regularly use Coconut oil and or Jojoba oil. I don’t wear makeup often nor do I use lotions or hair products. However, I have psoriasis and daily use of these oils help maintain my skin to be healthy and strong.
Favorite Yoga Clothes: I feel flexible and confident wearing Lululemon. I love wearing their “Free To Be Zen” bra and “Wunder Under” pants. From indoor to outdoor yoga, playing on the mat or playing with my dogs their clothes are always durable. I have a sewing machine and have recently gotten into creating my own clothes as well. The thing that is most important to remember is that yoga is not a fashion show. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident and your practice will excel.
THE YOGA GURU
Natalie Peach Yoga Has Helped Me: I have struggled with anxiety for most my life. Luckily, yoga has been a good friend and companion of mine for many years. Yoga has helped me find balance both physically and metaphysically when I feel overwhelmed, lost, or lonely. Yoga expands far beyond the mat and into my daily life through practicing, compassion, understanding, and patience with myself and others. I am a certified Personal Trainer. I teach Meditation, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, and Slow Burn at The Yoga Circle throughout the week, and geriatric yoga at Danberry Inverness monthly. I am also the director and co-lead instructor with Shannon Hancock of Vulcan Yoga Teacher Training (VYTT) held at The Yoga Circle. Vulcan Yoga Teacher Training is a 200 hour RYT certified yoga school. Our training is unique because it takes a multidisciplinary approach to a yoga education. It encompases Ashtanga, Kundalini, Vinyasa, and Yin. Website: www.VulcanYoga.com
Self-Described Personality: I am creative and imaginative. I am introverted, but that does not mean I am shy. I love animals, to travel, learn about new cultures, go on adventures, but most of all to practice and teach yoga. Motivational Tip: Grit, curiosity, and character are more important than IQ. Bravery is more effective than perfection. Give praise to effort more than intelligence. And drink lots of water! ABOUT
16 T O W N
Mood Setting Music: During a yoga class, the vibrations of a tone from the instruments pulsing through the speakers mimic the vibrations in our bodies and inspire rhythm and movement. Right now my favorite artist is Yellow Days, and specifically the song “ Gap in the Clouds”. However, I found it important not to rely on music alone to motivate a yoga practice. Sometimes, the music of one’s own breath is hypnotic and beautiful, the sound of rain or wind is melodic, and of course we have birds and other critters speaking to you while you move.
Go To Gadget: I have to have a juicer. I love my juicer. My favorite juice is carrots, kale, and ginger.
P E T IT O R F IG U R E C O M D A K E R U J E N N IF E R F R R OU A N S W E R S Y T IO N S . S H E A LT H Q U E I’m eating less, but haven’t lost any inches off my waistline. What am I doing wrong? Surprisingly, eating less may be culprit. It requires energy to keep your metabolism burning and that energy is produced by calories and macro nutrients - protein, carbohydrates, fats, fiber. Just like when you restrict a hose the water flow slows, when you restrict your calories, your metabolism slows. I recommend a cardio and weight lifting program to begin (and sustain!) the fat burning, muscle building process. There are so many diets- (ex. Paleo, Nutri-System, Adkins, Weight Watchers, etc.) How do I chose the right one? There is vast difference between a fad diets (nutrition-system, Adkins, South Beach, etc.) and an overall healthy diet. Most fad diets require a high caloric deficit filled with pseudo foods. This is why they work... for a short time. Those diets have a finish line, an expiration date. I always ask, “Will I be doing this is 5, 10, 20 years? Is this eating habit maintainable? Is this going to hinder me from enjoying a meal with my family or friends?” Food was never meant to control our lives, it is meant to enhance our lives. A healthy relationship with food is key. I follow a healthy, lifestyle diet where I track my micro nutrients (protein, carbs, fats, fiber) to ensure I’m appropriately fueling my workouts and daily life. This also keeps me from labeling food “good” and “bad” and I just see them as protein, carb, or fat. I’m looking to put on muscle, but I’m a hard gainer. What exercise routine should I follow, and how many grams of protein should I consume a day? Everyone is different. For that reason, I’m a BIG advocate for hiring a qualified personal trainer. This takes all the guess work out of it. In general, protein intake is based on your lean muscle mass. There are several ways to accurately find this out and in my experience, people (myself included) think we have more lean muscle than we actually do, leading to eating more than necessary. Again, very general terms, weight lifting for strength is a rep range between 5-8. Give yourself a pass to treat yo’ self, take the time to find a trainer you genuinely enjoy and commit to them, and to yourself, for 1 year. You can’t put a price of health and living your best life. I’m in my late 30s and noticing I’m losing muscle tone, and noticing more cellulite on my thighs. How can I lose that, and tighten-up? First, I know the feeling!! Something happens from 29 to 30. Incorporating weights and resistance into your routine is the only way to wage war on cellulite and loose skin, no matter your age. This also helps bone density. My day-to-day schedule with unexpected emergencies, children, and work make it so hard to stick to a diet. How do I plan, and discipline myself? Meal prep is a must! If you do nothing else, prep your meals and there’s nothing wrong with a left-over dinner. This way you’re saving money, you know exactly what you’re eating, how it was prepared, and it’s pre-portioned for you. Find an afternoon - mine is usually Sunday after church - to cook. We all have 1 to 2 hours in the week, so it comes down to priorities. No matter your diet, isn’t it ok to have one cheat-day a week to eat whatever? I like to call it a “refeed” because the word cheating has a bad connotation and we begin to associate eating (insert yummy food here) with something that is all-around bad, and it’s not. Limit your refeed to a single meal not an entire day. This is not a freefor-all. Are you making consistent, forward progress toward your goal? Refeed. A Clean Plate! Katie Strickland, Owner of Katie’s Plates Katie graduated from Mississippi State University in 2013 as a Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion Graduate and planned to work as a dietitian in the hospital. However, after graduation, she realized that she had a passion for food! She started off preparing healthy, gourmet meals in her mother’s kitchen and her business took off from there. They now have a Katie’s Plates location in Nashville and are planning to expand to Atlanta in August this year!
All lunches and dinners can be purchased by the portion needed such as single, couple, family, etc. Weekly breakfast and dessert options are also available! Visit katiesplates.com for additional details.
Can you accommodate special dietary requirements? To keep our meal options healthy, most of our meals are gluten-free, paleo or Whole30® compliant – sometimes all three! We are allergy aware and if you can let us know in advance, we can sometimes make requested modifications depending on the meal.
What is Katie’s Plates? Katie’s Plates is a healthy meal delivery service for busy people! My staff and I, including a registered dietitian, design new menus each week that include seasonal and local foods. Then, meals are delivered straight to your front door for you and your family to enjoy at the end of a busy day. Our goal is to provide tasty nutritious food without the need to grocery shop, cook or clean a messy kitchen! How does Katie’s Plates work? Orders for lunches and dinners can be placed on our website, katiesplates. com, between Tuesday morning and noon on Sunday for the following week. Dinners are delivered fresh and warm on the selected night between 4 and 7pm, except for Friday nights. Friday night dinners are delivered on Thursday night. Lunches are delivered the day before the requested day in a microwave-safe container. If you’re not home during the delivery time, simply leave a cooler on your doorstep and our delivery drivers will leave your meal for you. What parts of Birmingham are in your delivery area? We deliver to most of the Birmingham metro area (Downtown, Crestwood, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia, Liberty Park, Hoover, Inverness, Greystone, and 119). You can check if your residence is within our delivery area at katiesplates.com. If you’re not in the delivery range, you can still order! Pick up is between 5 and 6pm at our kitchen location at 4500 Montevallo Road.
How many Birmingham families do you feed in an average week? We feed between 100 and 150 families a week! Most of our families order every night, but some will do once a week as an in-home date night. We keep our customers for years and years! Our longtime customers from three years ago still order with us every week. The variety in the menu keeps everyone happy and coming back. What’s your favorite food on the Katie’s Plates menu? I love the Paleo Jalapeno-Popper Chicken! The chicken is stuffed with dairy-free cream cheese and cheddar cheese from Whole Foods, diced jalapeño and then the chicken is breaded in homemade almond flour mixed with taco seasoning! I also love our Turkey & Spaghetti Squash Burrito Bowls. I’ll be honest - anything I put on the menu I love!

Know Your Oils
Nature’s Juice – Join the healthy life, it’s not an epidemic but a new way to live, by enhancing the benefits of each ingredient used on your skin and ingested by the body. Treat your body well by adding a few of these oils to your routine, and you just might be surprised by the benefits they provide. From the olive oil craze to the essential oil epidemic, there are several more oils that are worth an extra look.
>> AVOCADO OIL – Most oils are found from the seed of a plant, but Avocado oil is uniquely pressed from the fleshy pulp that surrounds the avocado pit.
Benefits: Avocado oil can prevent the development of diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglyceride levels and obesity due to its rich composition of monounsaturated fats (good fats) and low doses of saturated fats (bad fats). Avocado is unique because it is high in beneficial fats and is loaded with potassium and protein! This oil is great for cooking, as it has a high smoke point of 400 degrees, but also for hair and skin – it is soaked with vitamin E that helps to soften skin and reduce wrinkling. How to Buy: Best used within six months of opening, opt for organic, extra virgin and cold-pressed. >> SESAME OIL – Sesame oil, which is extracted from sesame seeds is a less common oil with vegetable origin. It is light and nutritious and has several uses. In Ancient Indian culture, sesame oil was used to alleviate the body from disease. Thus, sesame oil is the oldest extracted oil in human civilization.
Benefits: Sesame oil is most common in Asian cuisine, but has grown increasingly more popular over the years in other dishes. Sesame oil supports hair health, skin health (it is rich in zinc, making it a natural sun repellent), heart health and bone growth. It has moderate wound healing properties and helps to remove toxins from the body. How to Buy: When buying sesame oil, opt for organic and store in a cool, dark place. >> FLAXSEED OIL – Also known as lindseed oil, comes from flaxseed and dates
back to the Neolithic Era. It is a rich source of vegetable sourced omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid and omega-6 fatty acids, that contribute to the prevention of stroke and skin problems like acne. Benefits: Flaxseed oil is rich in Omega-3s which are associated with healthy brain function and heart function, as well as better mood, decreased inflammation and healthier skin and hair. Flaxseed oil is even rumored to have a delicious flavor! Adding flaxseed oil to your daily routine can aid in weight loss, relieve constipation and diarrhea, fight cancer, remove cellulite and reduce eczema. How to Buy: Best to purchase organic and cold-pressed and should be stored in an opaque bottle to reduce oxidation. >> ROSEMARY OIL (essential oil) – What was considered a sacred oil by ancient
cultures, has managed to stick around the health and wellness world today.
Benefits: Rosemary is part of the mint family and is said to boost mood and maximize brain power, due to its makeup of flavonoids. Flavonoids are metabolites found in plants that have antioxidant effects. Rosemary oil can also soothe the respiratory system, encourage healthy hair growth, promote healthy and youthful skin and relieve muscle aches and pains. How to Buy: All essential oils must be therapeutic grade.
By: Shelby Davidson
>> ARGAN OIL – Argan oil is extracted from the Moroccan Argan tree - notorious
for being a hearty snack for goats. Dating back to ancient life, people relied on Argan oil for healing and enhancing beauty. Benefits: Argan oil is rich with Vitamin A, C and E and is loaded with antioxidants and fatty acids. Due to its powerful anti-oxidant action, when applied to the skin, it stimulates cell turnover and results in healthier and fresher looking skin. When used in a culinary matter, Argan oil can stimulate the nervous system, reduce joint pain, calm hypertensive tendencies, increase pepsin that facilitates digestion and stabilize blood sugar levels. All in all, it’s an extremely powerful oil, used for both beauty and health alike. How to Buy: Must be 100% pure Argan oil and cold-pressed, also look for additive free.
>> GRAPESEED OIL – Obviously, grapeseed oil is derived from grapes, but in-
terestingly enough, it is a byproduct of wine-making. The oils are extracted from the crushed grapes. Similar to olive oil, Grapeseed oil contains some monounsaturated fats but is ultimately high in polyunsaturated fats like omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Grapeseed oil is great for cooking, as there is a high smoke point, compared to other vegetable oils. Benefits: This oil can have anti-inflammatory benefits, promote healthy hormones, brain health and heart health. Grapeseed oil is ideal for low-fat diets and is a great source of Vitamin E, which contributes to health eyesight. When used in cosmetic products, grapeseed oil is an excellent skin moisturizer How to Buy: Highest quality is best, and opt for organic, cold-pressed.
>> HEMP OIL – Yes, we are in fact referring to the oil produced from the marijuana
leaf. However, Hemp oil only contains traces of THC, the product in cannabis that instigates the “high”. (Cannabus oil contains more THC and might be more difficult to find). Hemp seeds, from which Hemp oil is extracted, are rich in protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega 3, omega 6 and insoluble fiber. Benefits: Hemp oil is used to relieves stress and anxiety, treat asthma, promote heart health, relieve pain, protect skin and counteract aging. How to Buy: When purchasing, industrial Hemp oil is in fact legal, be sure to buy it cold-pressed.

Are you an over tweezer? You may need to check into AK Brow Rehab.
- - - - GIVE BROW REHAB A TRY BEFORE SPENDING MEGA BUCKS ON MICROBLADING. - - - Some women may not know it, but they are their own worst enemy when it comes to eyebrows. Ninety five percent of my first time clients are placed in brow rehab due to over tweezing, and it takes time to repair the damage. When I put someone in AK Brow Rehab they are not allowed to tweeze their eyebrows. The grow out phase is very hard in the beginning, but the process gets easier with time. Rehab can be tough, but it is worth it! The clients who stick with my plan end up with beautiful face framing eyebrows and they love the results. REMEMBER EYEBROWS SHOULD NEVER BE TRENDY, THEY SHOULD MATCH YOUR FACE. Here’s an example of AK Brow Rehab:

Revitalize and Restore
Hydration Restoration Fluids by VIDA-FLO in Vestavia can boost your energy, give relief to common colds and illnesses, and help get you back-on-track after exercising or a night out.
COLD, FLU OR STOMACH BUG Certainly your mother or grandmother told you to “drink plenty of fluids” to alleviate and speed along the negative effects of common cold and flu virus. They were absolutely correct in their advice and prescription. The 1000ml lactated ringers provided by Vida-Flo are equivalent to drinking 2.5 gallons of water in as quickly as fifteen minutes without the health risks, side effects and obvious problems associated with trying to drink that much fluid in a short period. In addition, our medical staff will assess what targeted medications and vitamins to offer to create “Family Remedy 2.0” to get you back on your feet.
FATIGUE OR JETLAG Travel can exhaust you both physically and mentally. Fatigue and jetlag are often caused by dehydration. Airline cabins are purposefully dehumidified which causes the water from your body to evaporate. Combined with other lifestyle choices associated with travel and germ-filled air that is circulated in airline cabins the result can be an overwhelming case of dehydration, illness or both. Vida-Flo will reverse the symptoms, allowing you to skip the jetlag and return the body and mind to a more optimal state.
Vida-Flo provides overall health & wellness, energy boost, illness relief and various comforts to our clients. Each patient is examined individually and every treatment is safe, time-tested, FDA approved and targeted to the goals, needs or symptoms of the individual. The Vida-Flo staff are all certified and accredited medical professionals in good-standing with vast experience in the procedures. Their job is to assess suitability and provide guidance for the treatment that provides our customers the greatest benefit.
DID YOU KNOW? Direct delivery of hydration, vitamins and energy agents to the bloodstream means your body absorbs 100% of the benefits of the targeted treatments. When drinking fluids, taking oral medications and vitamins the body might only absorb as little as 30%. In addition, for individuals that have to get back on their feet in a hurry (think big meeting or family vacation), Vida-Flo offers relief in as little as 45 minutes.
HEALTH AND BEAUTY Chronic dehydration can result in dry-skin, wrinkles, skin blemishes, and premature aging. Topical products offer a hydrating solution but cannot compare to intravenous treatments. The key is to moisturize from the inside out and nothing accomplishes this more effectively than Vida-Flo IV fluids and holistic therapies.
MIGRAINES OR SEVERE HEADACHES Dehydration is a known trigger for the migraine sufferer. Staying hydrated will help lessen the occurrence of these debilitating headaches. Additionally, normal Vitamin B12 balance and the anti-inflammatory Toradol are often prescribed treatments for migraines. Both the most popular and effective therapy we offer is 93% pure Oxygen. Blood vessels dilate during migraines and cause the pain associated with the condition. Because oxygen constricts the blood vessels, this helps the pain to subside, sometimes within minutes. In addition, O2 has an overall balancing effect which returns the brain to normal functioning.
ALCOHOL OVERINDULGENCE The overwhelming reason hangovers feel awful is dehydration. Your aches, pains, nausea, heartburn and general fatigue can be drawn directly to a lack of fluids and vitamin deficiencies. If you have all-day, high-sugar sports drinks, coffee, and “hairof-the-dog” may provide some relief, but do almost nothing to treat what is truly causing these symptoms. Our combination of IV hydration, vitamins, anti-oxidants, medications for pain, heartburn and nausea eliminate all side-effects of alcohol overindulgence in less than an hour so you can make the most of your day.
At Vida-Flo, the building block therapy for rehydration are Lactated Ringers, what we call our “Hydration Restoration Fluids”. These 1000mL bags consist of normal saline (0.9% sodium chloride) which replaces vital salt lost during exercise, after illness or even during the rigors of daily life when we do not drink enough water. It also contains the electrolytes Potassium, Calcium and Lactate. Potassium is an electrolyte that when lost is difficult for the body to absorb. Lactate is a compound that is used during metabolism in muscles and also reduces acidity, which is important, as most people become more acidic as they become dehydrated. Calciums extremely important, especially in later age for strong teeth and bones. Our therapies work two ways. > We treat during training to help athletes become optimally hydrated before a workout, event or competition to assist them to consistently perform at the absolute peak. > Post work-out or competition Vida-Flo provides advanced treatment that allows athletes to bounce back quicker than ever before. Our IV hydration therapies will expeditiously restore you to natural electrolyte balances allowing you to recover quickly and be ready for the next athletic challenge.
ATHLETIC OVEREXERTION BURNOUT For someone interested in improved athletic performance, often times sports drinks and oral supplements are simply not enough. Hydration therapy benefits both the competitive and recreational athlete looking for an edge or to increase the length and productivity of the workout. On a daily basis Vida-Flo is working with avid runners, MMA fighters, CrossFitters, yoga disciples and martial artists to make them faster, stronger and more competitive than ever before.

Your Best You SD Fitness isn’t your usual gym. The owner, Shellie Davis, found an interest in fitness at a young age while watching her mother work out. Exercise soon became an essential part of her daily life as she realized its positive effects. As an adult, she wanted to share her love for fitness with others. To this end, Shellie became a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor, and now has over 13 years of experience in her field. As the owner of a small business, a wife, and a mother of three, she recognized how difficult it is to find time to work out and how hard it is to stay motivated to continue your exercise routine. For these reasons, Shellie designed a unique fitness program that combines high intensity interval training that efficiently burns calories and increases muscle tone. She strives to make each workout different. Her workouts focus on improving balance, coordination, flexibility, and strength and cover such a wide variety of options that clients never become bored. SD Fitness provides a challenging yet friendly environment that is safe for all fitness levels. In addition, Shellie makes it a priority to provide encouragement and accountability to her clients. See what some of her clients have to say about their experiences: “It is addicting - you will want to come back again and again!” - Jennifer M. “I came to SD Fitness with a knee injury. At my previous gym, my knees seemed to hurt more & more even with the recommended modifications. With Shellie’s advice, my knee has improved 95% and I haven’t lost any ground in my training or aerobic ability.” - Mary Pat “Working out with Shellie for my whole pregnancy really paid off in the delivery room, and helped me have a speedy recovery. Now I’m back in the gym with Shellie and not only have I begun to lose the baby weight, but I’m a happier mama!” - Maury M.

Aero Joe Pilates Studio (Pepper Place) 2805 2nd Ave S - Suite 100 aerojoepilates.com 205.202.5758
Pilates is Big in Birmingham Right Now. Why?
More and more, the medical community recommends the core strengthening of Pilates for patients to ease the postural imbalances that can lead to chronic lower back pain, plus it’s a tremendous full body and mind workout. The Pilates equipment, such as the Reformer or Tower, can utilize spring weight resistance during non-weight bearing exercise to build long, lean muscles without negatively impacting joints. What’s Your Niche?
We achieve the full rage of therapeutic Pilates benefits for our clients while also providing a challenging total body workout for all ages and fitness levels. Clients range from professional ballet dancers to those in need of post-surgical rehabilitation. With highly experienced lead instructors and a small (4 – 6 person) equipment class size we can often address injuries and imbalances even within the scope of group training.
Classical or Contemporary… What’s the Difference?
The methods that originate most directly from Joe Pilates himself are “Original” or “Classical” -- both maintain the original exercises in the order that Joe intended. These methods also have a lineage line back to students of Joe Pilates and his wife Clara from days teaching in his initial New York City Studio. One of Joe’s students, known collectively now as “elders,” was Romana Kryzanowska, and, really, the teachers that are trained in her “Romana technique” are those considered Classical. Classical Method retains the
Alison Page (AERO JOE’S Owner/Pilates Instructor) was recently selected to attend the fall 2017 Heritage Training in Philadelphia, PA under the direct mentorship of Master Instructor Cara Reeser in the lineage of elder Kathy Grant. Alison is a Pilates Method Alliance Certified instructor with over a decade of teaching experience garnered in both Alabama and New York City. Her instructor training began with Physical Mind Institute in 2003; in 2005, she completed a comprehensive apprenticeship at NY PILATES in Manhattan — originally becoming a third generation instructor in the lineage of elder Romana Kryzanowska.
Original exercises, but uniquely utilizes dancer-like turnout or external rotation of the hip and a dance-like flow of movement. Contemporary Pilates takes a twist from the Pilates lineage of the elders. I think of the Classical and Original Methods as being in the immediate family of Pilates and the Contemporary forms as cousins, still family but sometimes twice removed. What’s Your Method of Choice?
It’s a well-kept secret to many that we have had true lineage-based instructors teaching here in Birmingham for decades. Though my original training is Classical or Romana-based my recent continuing education has been in the Original Method. For me it’s fun to mix it up some days with a Contemporary exercise if I can use it as a tool to inform or relate back to an Original one. I say search out a studio with experienced leadership and start with the Classical or Original Method. There’s real genius and research behind how the exercises relate in the original manner and order first intended. You can always branch out the “family tree” from there. You’ve Taught for More than a Dozen Years Now. What Drives You?
I have taught professional athletes and celebrities, yet my proudest accomplishments have been in creating quality of life improvements for my many clients -- bringing people out of pain. Physically looking your best happens from the inside - out. That people feel better or more empowered from movement, that’s my first goal as Pilates teacher.

An Email Interview Chris Perry, Perry’s Steakhouse
Nothing Beats a Steakhouse

What’s your favorite cut of meat?
What makes hosting an event at Perry’s unique?
Russ: Although I love all cuts, I lean toward a heavily marbled cut like a Prime ribeye or NY Strip.
Chris: Each Perry’s location is uniquely designed to cater to its community while remaining elegantly comfortable and perfect for any occasion. Our four private rooms are able to host groups as small as 12 or as large as 100+ and our sales managers work closely with our guests to ensure your family get together, important business meeting or grand celebration is truly Rare and Well Done!
On May 2, at 9:02 a.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:
Your roots are in Texas. How has Birmingham been since opening relatively recently? Chris We are very proud to call Birmingham home and very appreciative of the warm welcome we have received from this community. We love it here. May 3, at 7:42 a.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:
Why does Texas seem to do steak so well? Chris: Texas history is intertwined with a strong cattle industry. With that history came an appreciation for great steaks. Today, Texas is a big dining mecca as well, and Texans dine out more than most. As a result, Texans appreciate a great steak and dine out often, thus many great steakhouses call Texas home.
On May 4, at 7:38 a.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote.
What makes a Perry’s steak different from an Angus steak you can buy at the grocery? Chris: Perry’s serves Prime USDA-aged steaks. We are fortunate to have the buying power to secure the highest quality available. It is important to remember that less than 5% of all beef is graded as Prime, so you are really enjoying the best of the best at our steakhouse. In addition, Perry’s is able to secure a limited quantity of steaks including all grass-fed beef and Wagyu that are featured as specials for our guests. On May 6, at 3:34 p.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:
The Perry family opened its first restaurant in 1979 as a modest meat market called Perry’s Butcher Shop and Deli. In 1986, Chris Perry persuaded his father Bob to add dining tables, which eventually led to an expansion and the opening of a second market. As the markets gained popularity, Chris opened Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille in 1993. The original two butcher shops are still operated as Perry & Sons Market & Grille. Named by Open Table as one of the top 100 steakhouses in the country, award-winning Perry’s Steakhouse now as 13 locations including our newest at Perimeter Park in Birmingham.
How do you prefer to compliment your wines? Stick with the ‘Big’ ones? Cabernets? Chris: I like Meritage because its more custom blended and complex to the palate.

A Retreat to Paradise Find your inner peace among the many charms at the Henderson Park Inn in Destin. HAD A ROUGH WEEK AT WORK? NEED A BREAK FROM THE KIDS?
Grab your swimsuit and sunscreen, get in the car and head to the always-beautiful Emerald Coast. Your goal: relaxation. Your destination: Henderson Park Inn. Check in to rooms opening on to the Gulf’s cerulean waters and sugar fine beaches that define Destin and from the moment you kick off your shoes, say goodbye to stress. Step onto a private terrace from any of the 35 rooms at the New England-inspired Henderson Park Inn in Destin and take in the Gulf of Mexico view. This adults-only inn experienced a major redo this winter and the result is a luxe boutique hotel with the attentive service of top-shelf resorts including the setup of an umbrella and chairs on the beach for you to relax the day away. Henderson Park Inn is located at the eastern edge of Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, Fla. You’ll immediately notice that this resort property is unique when you see the wood shake exterior more commonly found in places such as Martha’s Vineyard. This quaint resort is only three stories high and not constructed of impersonal concrete but rustic wood more commonplace in New England. It adds a touch of charm and character that allows the Inn to stand out from the surrounding area.
There are also no children present, and the beach exudes a more private, quiet ambience for the busy Emerald Coast. The suites are exquisitely designed, and each one is unique. The carpets are plush, the bedding is luxurious, and the views from the private balconies are unforgettable. No detail seems to be overlooked such as a mini-fridge stocked with bottled water and snacks and a tray placed on the bed with a bottle of wine and grapes upon arrival. Whatever you left behind, when visiting the Inn, it’s sure to be forgotten in this romantic atmosphere. For more information, visit www.HendersonParkInn.com.
WHO’S HELPING WHO
UNITED ABILITY
A Nonprofit That’s Working
C
hances are, if you know someone in the Greater Birmingham area with a disability, they’ve been affected by the work of United Ability (formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham). This historic nonprofit serves thousands of people each year and has steadily expanded the scope of its programs and patients. It’s a place, a cause, and a credo. And it’s putting people with disabilities to work.
A second enterprise, Outsource Solutions, employs participants who supply packaging, collating, assembly, and fulfillment services. United Ability’s focus on employment is mutually-beneficial in other respects. Several universities partner with the organization to conduct disability services research as part of a multi-state grant. In turn, United Ability offers internships for students of those same universities in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work, nursing, education, and other fields of study. United Ability staff are pioneers in the fledgling field of supported employment training, making the internships excellent mentorship opportunities for young people. United Ability was founded in 1948 to provide services to those with cerebral palsy. However, as the needs of people in the community living with disabilities have evolved, so has the organization. Today, United Ability serves individuals living with a variety of disabilities including cerebral palsy, spina bifida, autism, Down Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, limb loss/deficiency, closed head injuries, intellectual, and more. The move away from “United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham” towards “United Ability” demonstrates a more positive outlook and a more inclusive mission.
In Alabama, only 28% of working-age adults with disabilities are employed*. Increasing employment for this demographic aligns with United Ability’s mission to help people with disabilities lead full and meaningful lives. They believe work can create a feeling of empowerment and a chance to connect to the greater community. So, they’ve focused on developing a full range of employment options, even founding a secure document destruction company in 2006. Gone For Good provides its 100 employees with not only a paycheck, but a sense of independence. They recycle enough paper annually to save 18,000 trees and their profits are recycled, as well, to support other programs at United Ability.
ABOUT
“Today, we have grown and are united in purpose, who we want to be. We changed the name to accurately reflect what we already are and have been doing—helping people with disabilities lead more enriched lives,” says Dr. Gary Edwards, CEO.

“We envision a world where disability is neither defining, nor limiting and help unite people with unique abilities in achieving a successful future.” CEO, Dr. Gary Edwards It’s difficult to quantify the impact of an organization so engrained in families’ lives. Yet, one measure would be the success they’ve had utilizing technology to improve services and access. United Ability incorporates stateof-the-art technology related to classroom instruction, communication devices, and health records. It doesn’t go unnoticed—people travel long distances to seek help. Despite being a fixture in the community for nearly 70 years, United Ability is unique in the state as the only organization providing a life-spectrum of services to people living with disabilities. With a full array of programs offered from their campus on Lakeshore Drive, as well as in-home early intervention services, the organization creates treasured opportunities for care, learning, and employment. As Edwards puts it, “We envision a world where disability is neither defining, nor limiting and help unite people with unique abilities in achieving a successful future.”
