B AET A U T Y ANY AGE With age, comes beauty. As we grow older, we gain more self confidence and a truer connection to who we really are, which radiates. Beauty – at any age can be seamless with proper nutrition, lifestyle, self-care and choosing the right products for you.

NEILLIE Our complexion remains taut, but sun damage, and hormonal influences may start to reveal themselves in the form of dark spots fine lines.

GINNY The Glory days for skin! Complexion is clearer, tone is good, and UV damage hasn’t yet made an appearance Keep the skin clean & never skip sunscreen.

20s

Remove your makeup – deep clean the skin without drying your complexion. Moisturize and WEAR SPF. Prevention is key in these years to avoid spending countless dollars on reversing sun damage at the cellular level. Melt makeup with a oil cleanser, and cleanse with a Refreshing or Clarifyng Cleanser to remove impurities. Moisturize with a gentle lotion that helps restore the skin’s barrier overnight.

Reset the clock by adding Vitamin C to repel free radicals.

30s

SECRET WEAPON – Cell renewal. The importance of skin cell turnover is key. Adding in a resurfacing mask 1-2x week The under eye area often becomes a concern for women in their 30s and heavy concealer or the wrong formula can make fine lines and dark circles even more obvious! Consider an illuminating eye cream or an eye brightener/corrector underneath your concealer to help mask dark circles without having to load on product.

SECRET WEAPON – Clogged Pores? Keep them clean with a pore refining mask 1-2x weekly. In your 20’s you definitely don’t need to over do it – especially with foundation — a tinted moisturizer is often enough to even your tone while keeping the finish fresh and youthful. A shimmery eye and glossy lip can take you from day to night by adding a little definition around the eyes for a striking evening look.

ELIZABETH Moisturizer. Layer it on – be consistent and generous. Cleanse, hydrate with a toner, layer a serum underneath your moisturizer. As in your 40’s, continue to stimulate collagen production with inner and outer products. Keep skin cells renewing with retinol serums and dull skin revitalized with dual acid peels.

COURTNEY Prevent deeper lines by boosting skin’s collagen production to help lift and plump the skin. Improve tone with an anti-aging serum and dark sports with a brightening serum. It’s also time to add a hydrating, rich eye cream to lessen the signs of crow’s feet.

40s

SECRET WEAPON – Collagen. get your collagen inside and out. Adding collagen, pre and probiotics supplements to your diet to fight aging. We love bold brows at any age! Definitely avoid thin, sparse brows over 40. Overplucked brows instantly age your face. A fuller, softer brow helps to give the illusion of lifting the face. Think of your cosmetics as your wardrobe – update your look. Consider letting go of the eye makeup and lip colors you’ve worn for years.

At night, remove makeup with an oil-based formula and follow up with a cleanser that rebalances skin’s moisture. Help erase the appearance of wrinkles with a retinol serum and moisturize with a rebuilding moisturizer.

50s

+

SECRET WEAPON – Hydration. Sleeping in a Hydration Mask 2-3x week will help to plump the skin and keep it looking soft. Choose a cream formula foundation over powder. They provide a more hydrated look without settling into fine lines. Enhance your natural features and keep the look clean. Add a pop of color to your cheeks for a youthful glow.

Precision Medicine in a Community Setting How Grandview’s new Cancer Center is changing the face of local cancer treatments. Jennifer De Los Santos, MD, Cancer Center Director & Chairman, Radiation Oncology, discusses the new Cancer Center.

Grandview is a new hospital, and the Cancer Center just began doing treatments June 11. What are the patient advantages to having such a new facility to visit?

The Grandview Cancer Center is a state-of-the-art facility with the latest technologic advances in radiation therapy and drug therapeutics including targeted and immune therapies. In addition to initiating a team approach to individualized cancer care with interdisciplinary clinics, we will be building a significant research platform to offer cutting edge treatments that may not be available off of a study. All of this will be very conveniently located off the 280 corridor in a beautiful new building where patients will have easy access and parking. When you mention ‘interdisciplinary clinics’, what does that mean for patients?

An interdisciplinary clinic is a clinic where newly diagnosed cancer patients are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of specialists at the time of diagnosis to create a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan. As an example, many breast cancer patients have options regarding equally effective care paths. This coordinated approach allows patients to see their entire team upfront and allows them to receive a well-designed treatment plan that takes into consideration all of the different options of care. What benefits come from the Cancer Center’s relationship to the surrounding medical community?

Grandview is one of the fastest-growing hospitals in the Southeast, with an increasing number of specialists and primary care physicians serving on staff. The Cancer Center is well-positioned to therefore serve a large portion of the community. Additionally, its location on the 280 corridor and convenient parking out front provide easy access to this high-level care. The new Grandview Cancer Center is located on the Grandview campus on Hwy 280. For more information visit: grandviewhealth.com or call 205-971-1800.

Tell us about the doctors and staff in the new clinic and what advantages they bring to patients.

We are fortunate to have a talented team of experienced surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists in the Grandview Cancer Center. In addition, we have built a team of experienced professionals that work alongside our physicians to deliver care, including nurses, nurse practitioners, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, physicists, nutritionists, and spiritual counselors. Future services will be added for more comprehensive supportive care and will include genetic counselors, pain management physicians, psychologists, physical therapists, lymphedema specialists, massage therapists, and acupuncturists. This comprehensive team approach is important to delivering high-level care and ensuring the patients are completely supported through therapy and into survivorship. What are some elements of the Center that are part of the latest technology in treating cancer?

The Center is equipped with a Varian True Beam linear accelerator and a treatment table that moves 6 degrees to more accurately align patients for millimeter precise treatment. We also have a large bore PET-CT that will be used for both diagnostic scans and radiation treatment planning. What drove you to dedicate your talent and passion into the Cancer Center, and where do you see it in 10 years?

The opportunity to build a center that focused the best parts of a private facility with an academic practice was a challenge I was ready to take on when the opportunity presented itself last year. The exciting part is being able to shape Grandview Cancer Center into something new to the community, and new to Birmingham. Grandview will offer the highest level of precision medicine and interdisciplinary care along with supportive care teams that help address the multitude of physical, psychological, social, and emotional issues that patients face through their journey. Developing a team of experts to deliver this care and making it the standard for patient care is our vision and goal.

EVERY CANCER PATIENT IS UNIQUE. AND AT OUR NEW CENTER, THEIR CARE WILL BE, TOO.

The Grandview Cancer Center is about to open its doors, bringing this community an important new resource for cancer care. A full range of care, from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up, will be available right here. Services will be provided by a team of cancer care specialists using advanced technology and cancer treatment options. Jennifer De Los Santos, M.D., is the Cancer Center Director. She is a renowned radiation oncologist whose research in breast cancer treatment has gained international attention. She joins more than 20 board-certified physicians and a dedicated staff who will provide our patients with personalized care. To learn more, visit GrandviewCancerCare.com.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT SUMMER...

What’s your most effective Summer skin care product?

We asked our readers online to give us their insights on Summer.

Origins eye cream with color corrector for the dark circles and pearl powder to reflect light away from the eye making it appear brighter. It also depuffs.

What’s your advice on staying cool during Summer weddings?

Wearing your hair in a cute up-do, always keeping water on hand (among other drinks…) and not overeating! There’s nothing worse than being stuffed with food and burning up.

Oil free moisturizer Clinique facial gel moisturizer. It saved my life when I suffered from cystic acne and I still use it today.

Don’t go

Herbivore Pink Cloud Rosewater Moisture Crème

Setting my makeup with powder and a wet beauty blender

Coola tinted matte sunscreen spf 30 Packing a small battery operated fan never hurt- especially if the ceremony is outside. What’s your most cherished beauty or health tip passed down from your mother or grandmother?

Booze

Don’t wash your hair every day! Keep your eyebrows thick! Do you switch perfumes/colognes in the summer? If so, what’s your go-to?

Deep breaths and drink water. My mother tells me that for any situation or ailment or anything at all. Honestly sometimes it does make me feel better or relaxed or feeling good. But don’t tell her I said that…

Something lighter with a coconut scent. Joe Malone. If you have one, you know it’s the best. With a variety of scents, I’m pretty sure all are taken/inspired by nature (which can be mixed and layered to make your own unique scent). It’s easy to have seasonal favorites but I use the same all year round. My current favorite is wood sage and sea salt.

Drink a tablespoon of organic, unfiltered olive oil every morning to make your hair and nails grow super fast! It really works!! Less is More!!!

What’s your can’t-leave-behind travel necessity?

I love Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana for summer months

My own soap What are your staple summer hair products?

Earplugs. You never know if it’ll be a loud flight, your partner might snore, or you just want to zone out and pretend to sleep in the car ride

Clarifying shampoo ‘It’s a 10’

A good magazine. Always.

dry shampoo Light leave in conditioner. Love It’s a 10. Easy to spray, brush, shake and go! Let it dry naturally.

sunscreen, eye cream, and a good face mask

Olaplex no. #3 after I get out of the shower and Kristin Ess Dry Finish Working Texture Spray for volume!

Do you use self tanner in the summer?

Actually wouldn’t mind if someone knew of a good, easy, subtle self tanner that didn’t smell bad either. What shorts length do you prefer on men?

I love Fake Bake’s Flawless Darker self tanner from Ulta! I put it on after my shower at night and wash it off in the morning. It looks so natural and doesn’t stain or smell bad!

11” inseam 12.5%

9” inseam 37.5%

7” inseam 50%

St. Tropez makes a good self tanner foam but I’d love to find one that’s a subtle, gradual build because the one I have has to be washed off after a few hours which isn’t very convenient. But St. Tropez does make good products. ABOUT

Mind, Body & Heart Wellness

Is My Need for Intimacy Connected to My Weight? Writer, Speaker, Radio & Television Contributor, Dr. Misty Smith is the Founder and Managing Director of the Birmingham, Alabama based Mind, Body & Heart Wellness Clinic. She is an ASSECT Nationally recognized Certified Sex Therapist (CST), as well as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) of more than 15 years, who focuses on assisting individuals and couples to achieve their optimal emotional, relational, and sexual health through a results-oriented counseling process tailored to the needs of the individual or couple. In addition to being ASSECT Certified, Dr. Misty has a PhD in Counselor Education from Mississippi State University and her EdS in Counseling from the University of Alabama. She can be reached by email at mistysmithphd@mbhwellnessclinic.com or mbhwellnessclinic.com.

>>> My need for intimacy is directly correlated to my weight. When I feel good about my body, I’m into it. When I gain a few pounds, I’m not. It certainly doesn’t help that my husband is losing weight! HELP!

However, it is more important to focus on empowering yourself as a woman! We “Sex Therapist types” might even consider this empowerment necessary to fully experience your body! Empowerment decreases the need to compensate for the void inside.

Let me begin by validating those icky feelings, as decreased sexual interest due to negative body image is a very common issue for women! This is such a common occurrence, I cannot even count the number of women I have seen in my office who express these same exact feelings. Tons of research has been done on the effects a negative body image can have not only on a woman’s desire, but also on her arousal and orgasm. YES! I said that word! We have them... or do we? If you aren’t experiencing the “big O” and maybe never have, it could actually be related to those nasty, negative feelings you have about your body. How much pleasure and enjoyment are we costing ourselves by not loving...ADORING...what we see when we look in the mirror?!

Determine your idea of beauty! Determine your style! What do you feel good in? What hairstyle works for YOU?! Stop worrying about what others think. Maybe you could start by making your body strong. When you can defend yourself, lift heavy items, run a marathon, or go hiking for miles, you might find yourself amazed at the increase in confidence exuding from your body! Choose “exercises” you enjoy and view as adventure and excitement. These leave you feeling even more positive about your body...EMPOWERED! Change the attitude you have about a few things. Exercise because it’s good for your well-being instead of feeling you “have to” because it is the only way to have a “perfect” body. STOP THINKING THERE IS A “PERFECT” BODY!!!! Don’t give someone else the power to determine perfection. Develop a more mindful and intentional relationship with food. Eat to live instead of living to eat. Decrease portion sizes. Think about the food you are putting into your body and how it will effect you in ways other than weight. How will it effect your energy, inflammation, digestion, cognitive abilities, sleep, etc?

EVERYTHING! A negative body image has the power to steal ALL of the joy away from our sexual experiences! The flirting, the kissing, the foreplay, the act of sex, and even the orgasm. A negative body image puts you at risk for rarely (possibly never) experiencing the enhanced pleasure found in fully loving everything about your body...even your flaws...and being comfortable in your own skin. This lack of pleasure sets you up for disappointment and disconnection. These feelings of emptiness and sadness increase one’s likelihood of reaching for substances or risky sexual behaviors to fill the void. Don’t give up, though!!! Improving a woman’s body image IS possible! So how can you get more comfortable in your body? How can you feel sexier in your own skin? Improving body image doesn’t merely need to be weak and frivolous attempts at increasing self-esteem. Affirmations about your body and your beauty are definitely wonderful, and I strongly encourage everyone to use them regularly.

5 REASONS YOU NEED

LOW I MPAC T, H IGH INTE N S I T Y T R A IN IN G Why should you go low? Low-impact workouts are defined as weight-bearing movements where one foot stays on the ground, placing less stress on the body and reducing the risk of injury. Here are just a few reasons that low impact training is the way to go! 1. FOR EVERYONE, EVERY DAY.

Whether you’re 27 or 72, anyone can participate in low impact, high intensity training every day! If you’re new to fitness, low impact training allows you to train without stressing your joints, encouraging you to go back and do it again. If you’re already a fitness enthusiast, it’s beneficial to add low impact training to your routine. It will strengthen and support your joints, which can improve your speed, flexibility, and endurance. Different forms of low impact training can include free weights, resistance bands, TRX straps and your own body weight.

2. HELPS WITH WEIGHT LOSS.

Don’t be fooled: "low impact" in no way means "low effort." You can still raise your heart rate and metabolism to burn calories and fat without the jarring impact. Many low impact exercises involve strength training. As your lean muscle increases, so does your resting metabolism, helping you to burn more calories all day long.

3. INCREASES CORE STRENGTH AND BA NCE.

Low impact resistance training increases your muscle strength and endurance by making your muscles work against a weight or force. As you increase resistance, your core will have to do more work to stabilize. A strong core

improves your balance and posture and reduces stress and pain in your lower back, and improves your performance in all types of physical activities.

4. ASSISTS IN CREATING A BA NCED LIFESTYLE.

Exercise releases endorphins which are known to create feelings of happiness, relieve stress and mental tension, and decrease symptoms of depression. When you are less stressed and your muscles are fatigued, you will typically sleep be er and have a calmer spirit overall. Not to mention, as you continue to see results from your workout, you will feel more confident! Low impact exercise tends to leave you feeling rejuvenated, instead of beat up, giving you a boost for the rest of your day!

5. GIVES YOU “STICK WITH IT” POWER.

People who train using low impact, high intensity exercise are more likely to stick with it. While impact exercises can be a great addition to your routine, low impact movements reduce your risk for injury and can help rehabilitate current injuries. It is also a mindful way to train because it brings awareness to the muscles you are working. You see tangible results as you stick with it, and can participate as many days a week as your schedule permits.

Diets and exercise that work together to increase hair growth, strong nails and glowing, clear skin. Shiny hair, muscle definition, bright skin, strong nails, clear eyes; these are all traits of a healthy lifestyle. We all know someone who has most of these (or those beautifully greedy creatures that I’m sure are impeccably humble and generous donning all of the above) and you may have asked, “Where do you work out and what do you eat every day?” It takes only quick observations to connect certain diet routines to fitness trends and physical attributes. Let’s start by defining the word “diet.” In this instance, diet does not mean a caloric deficit or food restrictive, rather a routine and daily lifestyle that promotes a persons energy expenditure. While the following are not all mutually exclusive or inclusive, there are noticeable correlations between the today’s trends in fitness and health and our looks. So, what are the foods prevalent in these lifestyles and what are the fountain-of-youth benefits they provide? One thing is for sure; these results don’t come from a magic fountain.

WEIGHT LIFTING: The sport(s) that are most known for their aesthetics. May have a bad rap in some circles, but is impressive nonetheless. Body builders take their diet to another level, especially if they’re competitors. What’s the secret to lean muscle mass? Ketosis (Keto) and tracking Macronutrients: The two are not the same but they are equally as popular in the body-building world. While they may be the least known diets, they are by no means the least effective. They do, however, require a little more precision. We’ll chalk it up to a poor marketing team. Keto follows a high protein, high fat, low carbohydrate ratio, while Macronutrients are protein, fats and carbohydrates and the ratio to each fluctuates depending on your goals. Animal protein(s) compared to plant-based protein, animal proteins are important in training areas such as weightlifting. Animal foods are the highest quality protein sources. Plant sources lack one or more amino acids, which makes it more difficult to get all the amino acids that your body needs for muscle maintenance and production. Those muscles we envy on body building athletes, this helps sustain them! Broccoli: A food notorious with the sport. What gives? Why do body builders always have broccoli around? Broccoli, along with deep green vegetables such as kale, collards, watercress and spinach have so much of the vitamins A, C, E, K and B, that our bodies takes them in like a vacuum (hi, fiber!). Not only do these provide calcium, magnesium and potassium (critical for hair, nails and skin) but they’re also water-rich so they won’t dehydrate your body and keeps muscles full. Grains (not as applicable to Keto): Grains often times have a critic or two but here’s why weightlifters love them. They’re a complex carbohydrate which provides a slow release of energy; energy that is, needed when lifting maximum weights in massive volumes. Carbohydrates are our bodies energy source, which is why we crave them so often. Apart from energy oats and grains have high amounts of zinc, biotin (being on the hair growth!), magnesium and potassium. Meaning, a deficiency in these can cause dull skin and brittle hair and nails. Carbs are not the enemy! Red bell pepper: *Fun fact: These bright and crisp peppers contain FAR more skin-boosting vitamin C than their more popular cousin, the orange. Loading up on these will help keep sun and light damage at bay.

ABOUT

YOGA AND PILATES: Both yoga and Pilates have been proven to improve flexibility; balance and posture along with helping regulate sleep and reduce stress, when practiced correctly. I don’t know about you, but when I’m well rested and experiencing low stress, there’s a difference in my skin and I make better choices with food. Because the premise of these practices is about purifying your mind, body and spirit, a lot of yogi’s are vegetarian or vegan. Those elongated muscles, bendy limbs and solid core? Sign me up. Vegetarian and Vegan: With a diet rich in fruits and veggies, there are ample amounts of vitamins that nurture hair growth, balance skin tone and strengthen the immune system. Eggs (vegetarian only): We just “cracked” the code for hair. Because an egg’s key ingredient is sulfur, which promotes absorption of vitamin B and liver function/detoxification, it is necessary for the production of collagen and keratin. Hello, shiny locks, strong nails and dewy skin. Spinach: This Popeye power food is a major anti-ager due to being rich in beta carotene, which converts to vitamin A, one of the body’s most powerful resources for anti-aging. Pair with vitamin C (see below) for premium absorption to prevent wrinkles and remove dead skin. Pumpkin seeds: The ample amounts of zinc, vitamins A and K and omega-3 fatty acids build healthy hair shafts and the vitamin C produces sebum, which is your skin’s natural oil that protects and repairs skin.

CROSSFIT AND FUNCTIONAL TRAINING: This needs no introduction, so we’ll skip that. What you may not know is the origin of Crossfit is gymnastics and the 10 physical qualities are: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. Functional training is similar in some instances, but not necessarily in the qualities of power and strength. For wellrounded athletes like these, a well-rounded diet is required. You can spot a cross-fitter from a grocery aisle away, and here are some of the foods that enable them to perform at that level. Paleo and Whole 30: I’ve heard this asked a lot so the short answer is, it’s long-term vs. short-term. Paleo is long term lifestyle that is centered on eating only whole foods and cutting out anything processed, while Whole30 is more of a reset button for 30 days. The Whole30 “off limits” list is quite a bit longer for detox purposes. For this we’ll focus on the Paleo diet. Fatty Fish: Salmon usually takes the winner’s circle, but mackerel, sardines and anchovies are even better. Omega-3 fatty acids are beauty bombshells for anything you want to glow or shine. About 3% of the hair shaft is made up of omega-3 fatty acids. Potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash: All contain the triple threat for healthy looking hair, skin and nails; Vitamin A. Vitamin C is also packed in these veggies, an antioxidant that combats free radical production that can lead to aging and stimulates collagen to repair skin. Almonds: We know almonds are good for us, but why? They boast Vitamin E (the vitamin that’s great for skin), but also provide anti-inflammatory benefits for the body and are a great source of calcium to keep bones and teeth strong, in addition to hair, skin and nails.

Gym Bags Yes, you’re tossing your sweaty sneakers and workout clothes in it, but that doesn’t mean your gym bag should be drab! This season, we’re seeing lots of chic looks to and from the gym – and not just leggings, tops, and water bottles. Gym bags are the “in” way to show off your style. Whether you’re a classic girl who opts for a neutral look, or you’re a fashionista who loves a head turner, we’ve got a look for everyone. When you’re looking, keep in mind: 1) If you’re prone to bring home sweaty clothes or you’re toting post workout drinks around, opt for a bag with waterproof or breathable materials. 2) Grab a bag with multiple compartments to store your gear depending on your exercise of choice. If you’re a yogi, you’ll need a place for your yoga mat! If you’re headed to the pool, you’ll need a place to hold your goggles and pull buoy. 3) When choosing a bag, take into consideration how you’d like to tote it. Are you more of a shoulder bag girl or maybe you prefer a backpack so you can carry your briefcase on your wrist.

Aero Joe Pilates Studio (Pepper Place) 2805 2nd Ave S - Suite 100 aerojoepilates.com 205.202.5758 info@aerojoepilates.com

Mindful Movement

Aero Joe Pilates’ Success Built on Staying True to Pilates’ Original Roots

Aero Joe Pilates’ friendly teaching staff wishes to take the intimidation factor out of your 1st Classical Pilates class. Here’s what you can expect in your first class:

AERO JOE’S (Est. 2012) as Birmingham’s Premiere Classical Pilates studio, runs an intensive weekly schedule of group classes and private lessons. Owner, Alison Page, a 14-year veteran teacher and graduate of Master Instructor Cara Reeser’s Heritage Training ® enjoys the bustle of a busy studio as any business owner would, yet she and her team ensure that the studio is a sanctuary for mindful movement even in the context of a packed group class. Mindful concentration is integral to the Original Method as Joe Pilates, the visionary founder of the form, designed. (Classical or Original Method Pilates is backed by 40 years of proven research by Joe Pilates and his wife, Clara Pilates who taught for years at their now famous 8th Avenue studio in New York City.) Joe Pilates himself is quoted as saying his method is the “Complete coordination of mind, body, and spirit.” At Aero Joe Pilates the teacher’s first priority is to create a challenging, full-body workout, but the full Pilates benefits come from focused mind-body learning. “We are all sweating and at the same time focusing on precision. Our mindful classes provide benefits similar to meditation, boosting mood and lowering stress levels. This is how we impart real change for students from inside – out.,“ Page says.

Pilates is for All Bodies

Community

Pilates’ wealth of exercise variations means the form can be adapted for anyone. With a dynamic client community ranging in age from 15 years to 95 years (truly!), Page feels the studio, and Joe Pilates’ method itself, helps people feel well in their bodies at any age.

The group class community bonds over the process, building to more difficult skills over time. The goal isn’t Pilates perfection, but allowing students to tap their full potential for, both, inner and outer strength.

Highly vetted teachers provide the expertise necessary to teach all ages, levels and body types. Expert teaching addresses core strength, muscle imbalances and postural issues. (When choosing a Classical studio Page advises to be sure to choose a studio that posts instructor bios directly on their website. Check instructor bios for verifiable graduation from a reputable teachertraining program plus continuing education credentials in the direct lineage of Joe Pilates.) Mindful

Combining breathing techniques with movement is a key component of Pilates. The breath focus relaxes the central nervous system allowing students to execute movement with less unnecessary tension. Expert Pilates teachers cue students into good postural alignment by using creative imagery alongside explanation of the exercise’s motor pattern.

Total-Body Workout

Pilates works all parts of the body. Muscle differentiation is a learned skill with some muscles acting as stabilizers and some as initiators. The goal is movement intelligence: the ability to control the body’s every movement. Dynamic Flow

Pilates moves the spine in all directions unless there is pathology present. Sessions use muscle resistance to gravity in as many planes in space possible within a class session to achieve results. Students flow dynamically through an ordered sequence of many exercises. Spring resistance provides benefits similar to weight training. A consistent practice will build lean muscle mass all while aligning the entire body.

Aero Joe Pilates in Pepper Place offers private training and small group classes. Innovative Aerial Yoga class options and licensed massage therapy are also available. Information and group class sign up available via www.aeroejoepilates.com Tel 205.202.5758 | E-mail: info@aerojoepilates.com

MUTT STRUT The 9th Annual Mutt Strut: 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run benefited Hand in Paw, a charity that was born in the 90’s, so this year they threw it back to that fly decade. Participants dusted off their Walkmans, grabbed their furry best friends and headed to Sloss Furnaces! Guests screamed “Booyah!” when they scored a race bag filled with mad swag, a choice of tee or tank, and a bandana that makes dogs look doper than Air Bud. WHAT WE’RE DRINKING

SUMMER TIME CHILL Taylor Dye, beverage manager at the PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE, recommends some of her favorite Birmingham wines.

Canned wine, spritzers, and tetrapaks are continuing to grow in popularity, and we aren’t complaining. Canned wines add versatility and ease into bringing your favorite beverage on the go – whether you need it for the beach, camping, or your neighborhood barbeque. Although they range in sizes, the standard 375 ML cans equate to half of a regular bottle, so you’re still getting bang for your buck. They chill more quickly, are lightweight and easier to recycle than glass bottles. What’s not to love?
