HOW MUCH DOES THAT COST?
What Does Your Bedroom Color Say About You?
(Compared to last year)
According to House Beautiful and Texas Professional Painting
TWO STORY ADDITION NATIONAL AVERAGE COST $175,00
BEIGE
NAVY BLUE
last year = $155,00
BATHROOM REMODEL NATIONAL AVERAGE COST $18,000 last year = $16,000
Beige is imbued with a certain sense of substance and stability. Beige lovers appreciate the subtlety of the color, enjoying the soft warmth it conveys.
A blue room represents a mature, sophisticated individual. Friends and family enjoy being around you because you’re fun but also extremely loyal. Blue lovers are totally dedicated to the color. You prefer the shades that feel like the descending twilight hours— quiet, peaceful and thoughtful.
RED
LIGHT BLUE
BASEMENT REMODEL NATIONAL AVERAGE COST $22,000 last year = $18,000
WOOD REPLACEMENT WINDOW NATIONAL AVERAGE COST $850 last year = $650
MINOR KITCHEN REMODEL
Red is an intense color, and that’s exactly the type of person it depicts. If you have red walls, you’re prone to sending mixed signals to people and like to leave them wondering.
Lighter blues are always associated with the sky and water—clean, clear, open and expansive would describe the way you like to feel in your surroundings.
NATIONAL AVERAGE COST $16,500
GRAY
CONCRETE DRIVEWAY REPLACEMENT
PINK
last year = $650
NATIONAL AVERAGE COST $6 per sq. foot last year = $6 per sq. foot
Even though pink is descended from the mother color’of red, it is less ardent and demanding of attention and more inclined to romance and tenderness. The softer the pink, the gentler one is. However, if your room is hot pink, you’re bold and not afraid to break the rules a little.
Although some people may label you as boring, you’re not. You enjoy modesty and don’t need a plethora of material items to be happy. Gray doesn’t demand or always need the promise of excitement, but does crave contentment and stability.

FRED DRYSS 1955 - 2022
Fredrick Ben Dyess sadly passed away at the age of 66 this January from complications from COVID19. Fred was born in Waynesboro, Mississippi and moved to Houston in the ‘80s where he met his wife Judy Flowers. The Dyess family moved to Vestavia in 1994 and opened Avondale Antiques in 2015. He had a passion for midcentury modern furniture, vintage lamps, lighting and vintage barware. He loved talking to his customers about these unique finds and was always eager to share his love of Birmingham. (He loved Bright Star.) He was lucky to be able to do what he loved, and share his life with others. His advice was always to think about pieces that you like, as opposed to items that “match”. “You’re not looking to decorate a showroom. You’re looking to decorate your home, and the most important word is “your”. A one-of-a-kind is always more interesting than something that everyone else has,” he said. The couple also had a son, Benjamin. ABOUT

A SPIFFY SHINDIG
How design and discounted deals can be found in a monthly showroom event. Some of what you’ll find on
abouttown.io
Spiffy started as a staging company. They soon realized how much people loved their style and curated look, that they wanted to offer their design to everyone. It’s daunting to design a room, but their curated collections make it easy. You can shop all of their furniture at their Spiffy Shindig once a month sale. It’s design and deals all wrapped up in one.

What makes it different from a regular furniture showroom? Nothing boring or vanilla here.
What can guests expect to find at a Spiffy Shindig as far as inventory and price?
It is Birmingham’s Biggest Shopping Party. Great prices and curated furnishings and home accessories for all styles. We started Spiffy as a staging company and quickly realized our customers loved our style and our prices so Shopping Shindig was born. We wanted to create a space where everyone walks through the door and says “hey, this is my happy place.” Great music, great deals, great fun and even free margaritas greet you at the front door.
We curate collections with intention; everything from vintage, antiques and new, out of the box, pieces at various price points. You will find textures and bold colors and statement pieces. We have home accessories for kitchen, bath, living, dining and every room in your home. We travel far and wide to bring you the pieces your friends will say “hey, where did you get that!?!” We always hear our customers say when they walk in our showroom they love EVERYTHING Spiffy.
Who are some of your vendors? We source
furniture from all over the world but we also have local guest artisans that rotate monthly to offer you original art pieces from local artisans. Pottery, jewelry, and handmade goods and food from local talent.

MY 5 FAVORITE LOCAL TRAILS Claiming a Fit and Healthy Routine
H
UPDATE
by: Megan Underwood (self described Diet Addict)
by: Whitney Renfroe
i! I’m Whitney, and I am pretty much obsessed with movement. We weren’t built to sit through our wild and beautiful lives…we were built to move through them. Of all the ways to get your body going, simply walking is by far the most accessible. Sure, you could hop on a treadmill or walk the same sidewalks day after day, but did you know that nature is an effective regulator for your nervous system? So, if you have a dose of curiosity, a little exploratory spirit and a few free hours, hiking a wooded trail is pretty much the bee’s knees. There are plenty of trails in and around Birmingham you can hit in a day or less. Here are some of my absolute favorites, in order of least difficult. #1: JEMISON TRAIL
Jemison runs right through the heart of Mountain Brook and is so easy to do! There are lots of different ways to build your perfect walk. Maybe you enjoy a casual stroll along the paved sidewalk that runs parallel to the creek, which is ideal if you’re pushing a stroller or have littles with you. However long you choose to stroll, you’ll get a perfect dose of the natural outdoors. Convenience **** | Length ** | Difficulty *
#2: RUFFNER MOUNTAIN QUARRY - BUCKEYE - WETLANDS LOOP
Most people flock to Ruffner for the ever-popular Quarry Trail, which is a mild to moderately challenging 2.2 mile out and back trek. Don’t get me wrong, the Quarry view is lovely, but I like to dig a little deeper into the belly of Ruffner, where there are less people and more elevation changes. This isn’t a grueling hike, but your glutes will thank you after the uphill segments. This hike typically takes me 45 minutes, and with Ruffner Mountain only about 15 minutes from downtown, you can easily pack this in before brunch! Convenience **** | Length ** | Difficulty * #3: RED MOUNTAIN BMMR NORTH
So, here’s the thing about Red Mountain: you won’t get lost! Seriously, everything eventually connects back to the start, and you can loop around this whole park in two or three hours if you set a brisk pace. I highly encourage taking the #10 Mine Trail to the Wenonah Connector to get to the back side of the mountain. The BMMR North trail is way less crowded than the south and the views are gorgeous! And the best thing about this park is that if you have a fur baby you can hit Remy’s Dog Park on your way out. Convenience **** | Length *** | Difficulty **
#4: OAK MOUNTAIN YELLOW TRAIL - YELLOW WHITE CONNECTOR - WHITE TRAIL
Birminghamians have a true gem in Oak Mountain. Only about 25 minutes from downtown lies this gorgeous, expansive state park where you can fully immerse yourself into nature and get away from day-to-day stressors. There are so many highlights at Oak Mountain- Peavine Falls and King’s Chair are the most popular for good reason. But if you’re in it more for the hike and less for the destination, my personal favorite is to begin at the North Trailhead on the Yellow Trail. Convenience *** | Length *** | Difficulty *** #5: SIPSEY WILDERNESS RANDOLPH &
SIPSEY LOOP TRAIL
Plenty of people head up to the Sipsey for camping. But if you’re like me, if you can get your hike done in a day and sleep in your own bed afterwards, why not do that?! With that being said, there is so much to explore in the Sipsey. I like the Randolph-Sipsey loop because it’s absolutely gorgeous, and it’s doable in a half day. This allows for the 90 minute drive time to and from Birmingham. I logged this loop at 10.5 miles with two water crossings. (Don’t be shy, roll your pants up and wade right through!) I will caution that it’s easy to get lost up there, so I recommend downloading a GPS map that will work offline, like AllTrails Pro. Convenience ** | Length **** | Difficulty ****
ABOUT
8 TOWN
> #carnigirl here! Circling back, as promised. I am about two months in to my third adventure with the carnivore diet, and loving it more than ever! (I only consume animal products.) In my first carnivore round, I successfully lost all the pounds and restructured my body composition. There were plenty of other benefits and positive outcomes, but my problem of being a slave to the scale, meant I only cared about that needle moving. Stronger does not always equal bigger, but for me it did. It was fun to break personal records weekly, but I felt like a stranger in my body. I tried several other faddish diets in an attempt to get smaller and weigh less. ex.- I waited to eat as late in the day as possible (intermittent fasting). I tried a botched and sabotaged version of a carnivore diet (keto), and the impossibly-restrictive HCG diet. I watched the scale go back and forth across a 10-pound range as I weighed myself daily. I lost some pounds, some size and a whole lot of muscle and strength. I also lost my love affair with nutrition and exercise. Working out was not fun anymore, and eating certainly wasn’t. I’ve since come back to the carnivorous diet and have learned, healed and changed inside and out. I can’t remember the last time I stepped on a scale and honestly had no idea what I weigh. And I’m not panicking! I only wear my heart rate monitor/calorie-burn counter during my workout, as opposed to wearing it 24hrs, and obsessively aiming for higher and higher burn goals. I look in the mirror less than ever. I compare less and compliment more. I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full, and don’t count calories. To be clear, I still have moments of belly hating or love-handle loathing. They’re just fewer and further between. And I see them for what they are - moments, not places. When the negative thoughts come, I attack them by acknowledging them. Then, I intentionally choose words or actions of affection toward my body. (Sometimes out loud.) My appreciation for what my body does for me daily is greater than ever. I would rather measure success through the eyes and delight of my husband, or through the compliment of a stranger. I would rather feel comfortable in my skin and clothes than weigh an imaginary number. I would rather consider deep, restful sleep and energetic mornings my goal. I would rather mark a full and productive day with energy and stamina than a high calorie-burn count with a mid-afternoon crash. I would rather count this higher-than-ever libido as living my best life than count every calorie I consume…and I’m not the only one. Carnivore-done-right wins. I win.

Straightening Your Teeth Beyond Visible Braces Dr. Paul Koch of Koch Aesthetic Dentistry specializes in this area of dentistry. by: Dr. Paul Koch at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry
A person’s smile is a look into the joy that makes them who they truly are. Every single grin is beautiful, and after a couple years over not seeing them so often they really feel like a blessing. While we should all cherish our unique smiles, many people do feel they’d be more confident with some minor changes to their teeth, but don’t necessarily want to go through the experience of having clunky braces for multiple months. Those who had them in the past remember the trials of having metal in your mouth, and many who haven’t would prefer to find a simpler method to make upliftments to their teeth. Fortunately, there are many ways to do so. Koch Dentistry right here in Birmingham shares a few such ways with us.
What You Need To Know About MAIL-IN CLEAR ALIGNERS The three most important aspects of any dental procedure are the initial medical and dental evaluation, obtaining precisely accurate records, agreeing on the intended results (in light of what is possible, practical, and advisable), and monitoring the progress of the treatment along the way. Traditional orthodontics and dentist-mediated tray aligner approaches customarily pay attention to all of these areas, whereas a ‘patient’ is managing most of these in the mail order aligner systems, with absolutely no training or experience. If there is an underlying condition, such as compromised bone or gum disease that could sabotage the results, this may or not be correctly diagnosed prior to treatment, and the final results could be catastrophic. If you have any questions for Dr. Koch, please visit kochaesthetics.com or call (205) 933.0323.
Koch Aesthetics offers FREE VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS. And initial consultations can done via video. Simply visit kochaesthetics.com and click FREE VIRTUAL CONSULT in the upper right corner.
COSMETIC DENTISTRY Cosmetic dentistry gives professionals like Dr. Koch a wide variety of customizable tools to provide each patient the exact enhancements they need for a perfect smile. Options like dental crowns and porcelain veneers do twin miracles in restoring cracked and chipped teeth while also providing an immediate aesthetic solution. It’s truly the best of both worlds for those looking to take control of their mouth. Dental implants are another great example of the powerful range of cosmetic dentistry, as they can provide full replacement while also preventing further bone loss. Nowadays, technology can often be used to better find the precise steps each individual needs to find their desired appearance. Options like the Smile Makeover give your dental blueprints to experts who then turn it into a real life dream! Love yourself for all that you are, but if you find yourself feeling you’d be happy with some changes there are ways to do so safely, securely, and in a bit more lowkey manner. Keep on smiling, and finding new reasons to do so Birmingham!
INVISALIGN CLEAR BRACES What makes Invisalign clear braces so cool? The same thing that makes Wonder Woman’s jet cooler than the average plane, Harry Potter’s cloak sleeker than any other garment and ghosts the stars of reality television networks-they are invisible. This wonderful invention allows Birminghamians to work on their charming smiles while not having to deal with being self-conscious about the process. In addition to being invisible, these braces are also a more comfortable alternative to the traditional sort and provide the option to include a Zoom! or KoR Whitening treatments as well.

3 Solutions For Sun Exposure We take a look at the top ways to keep our skin healthy with Gunn Dermatology.
The sun is out in Alabama, and while we welcome the warmth it brings (and the fun water trips that come with it), we must also protect ourselves from the damage it can create. If you’ve lived in the South long enough you’ve seen if not experienced firsthand the dangers that can come with being in the rays too long - meaning we know to take this threat seriously. Both the short and long-term impact can feel detrimental, when in reality they can often be easily addressed. Although we try our best to protect ourselves beforehand, what can we do after we’ve been exposed? Fortunately for the good people of Birmingham, Gunn Dermatology has the answers for every level of sun-related dilemma.
SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING SkinPen Microneedling is another wonderful option for those looking to address the effects of sun exposure along with other health and aesthetic skin concerns. The microneedling aspect ensures that the treatment is minimally invasive, which is always a comforting thing to hear, and the results speak for themselves. Many-a-Alabamian have seen their lives improve after choosing to try out this process, and we would imagine even more do so after seeing the wonderful impact it has on their family and friends.
AQUAGOLD FINE TOUCH Aquagold gives each patient that requests the service a custom-designed solution that is blended from enzymes, vitamins, plant extracts and all sorts of healthy solutions to address their specific needs. It is a gently-applied service that takes less than 20 minutes, which makes the process even more incentivizing. The personalization and easy-going nature of this treatment make it the ideal option for a variety of needs, including help with sun exposure.
For more information about any of these treatments, contact Dr. Holly Gunn at Gunn Dermatology for a consultation: 32 Church St, Mountain Brook 205-415-7536.
ICONIC PHOTOREJUVENATION Just like the other options listed in this article, iconic photorejuvenation treats a variety of skin concerns with sun exposure being right at the top. It may also be the most catered to treat the issue of sun exposure head-on, as part of the major purpose behind the treatment is reducing red and brown spots on the skin. Dr. Holly Gunn with Gunn Dermatology recommends that everyone makes this a routine part of their skincare routine, and the before-and-after pictures we’ve seen make it easy to see why.

Home Hunting
A Home Full of Hope by : Rachel Burchf ield
The Lassiter home is a symbol of fresh starts, new beginnings, and beauty emerging from pain.
E
very home has a story. The Lassiter home – a 3,720-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bathroom home tucked into Mountain Brook – is no exception. And, while the home that Emily Lassiter has decorated and adorned is beautiful, its beginnings stemmed from pain. Emily and her two daughters moved into this home only months after losing Emily’s husband and the girls’ father unexpectedly in a plane crash. This new home was a fresh start, a new beginning, and a chance for the all-female trio to lean heavily into their femininity while still honoring a beloved husband and father. “We decorated our home as a new family of three girls after my husband died in 2014,” Emily, a financial advisor and cofounder of The Wealth Edit, tells About Town.

The bedroom’s warmth and comfortable tone is complimented with lively bright colors.
“We wanted to celebrate our femininity while honoring the memory of a dad and husband who loved us well.” And, though the home was purchased in 2014, the decorating is still ongoing, Emily says. Emily enlisted the help of decorators Alison Smith and Virginia Volman to create a vibrant home. “I wanted to create a happy home that was comfortable enough to live in, nice enough to entertain in, fun enough for the kids to enjoy, and eclectic enough to display all the things we love,” Emily says. The living room is still a work in progress, in particular the hunt for the perfect curtains with the perfect fabric. “We wanted to create a room that was comfortable and layered,” she says. The living room’s distinctive pieces include a coffee table, leopard print chair, and lamps that pull together a sophisticated, modern space. ABOUT

In the den, the anchor color of the room is white with pops of color like turquoise, orange, and candy red. Every item in the den – and the entire home – feels perfectly placed there, filled with not only aesthetic appeal but deep meaning behind it. Unique pieces like turquoise blue banquettes and stunning tables complete the layered look of the room. “We do not have an eat-in kitchen, so we had to get creative with the banquettes,” Emily says. “These banquettes are really the heart of our home. We eat, work, study and visit here!” For the dining room, Emily says they “combined different finishes and styles to create an ‘everyday’ dining room,” she says.

Home Hunting For the dining room, Emily says they “combined different finishes and styles to create an ‘everyday’ dining room. The focal point is one of my favorite pieces in the house – a large abstract by Katie Robinson. We used the turquoise and orange in the painting to set the tone for the entire house.”
“The focal point is one of my favorite pieces in the house – a large abstract by Katie Robinson. We used the turquoise and orange in the painting to set the tone for the entire house.” White dining room chairs, vases, and flowers offset the wooden dining room table and gold shelving. Two turquoise chandeliers take the look and feel of the room to an elevated level and match the turquoise detailing on the seats of the dining room chairs. It all blends beautifully. After a leak, Emily renovated the guest bathroom in 2019. “The wallpaper by Cotton & Quill is a showstopper,” she says. As with the dining room, the guest bathroom’s white and gold accents carry a wellthought-out theme throughout the home. On the stairs, Emily says, “I simply adore the antelope carpet,” and in the master bedroom, pinks and reds are the anchor colors, providing the feminine feel that Emily and her daughters sought to attain when they moved into the home nearly eight years ago. If every home has a story, the Lassiter home is one of resilience, strength, and beauty – just like the women who live in it. To see more pictures of Emily’s house visit abouttown.io.

Home Is Where The Heart Is.
H
ome is where the heart is. How may times have we read that cliché? But that’s the thing about a cliché; it is a cliché for a reason. And so it is here. Our homes are sacred spaces. Sacred spaces are where we devote most of our best energy. If one pours their heart into something, then it should reflect the best one has to offer. We taste lots of wine here at the Pig. Lots. I mean, LOTS. Sounds like fun, but there is plenty of stuff out there that doesn’t really hit the mark. Just one of those things, I guess. But we noticed something about a certain set of wines.
EYRIE - The Lett family were literal pioneers in Oregon. In 1965 David and Diana Lett started the first winery in the Willamette Valley to actually make a go of it. They also planted the very first non-academic vineyard of Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio if you are Italian, outside of Europe. Not only do the Letts live and work amongst the vines of their one hundred percent estate vineyards, but they also do so in more than one location. The matriarch still lives in the family home at the original vineyard site. Her son, and now winemaker, Jason lives on the Daphne estate vineyard. Eyrie has always been one of the favorites for us here. The proof is in the pudding, or bottle rather, for the entire Eyrie lineup. The Daphne vineyard is legendary in Oregon. Not only for the quality of the wine, but also (we think) because this is the site Jason sees the most. Jason grew up on this hill, and nobody knows it better.
MURGO - We look at American wines quite a bit because, well, we are American. But the Italians kinda got this ball rolling. It is always fascinating to think about wineries and families that have been making wine since we only had 33 states. The Scammacca family at Murgo have been making great wines in Sicily for a while. When we say, “a while,” we mean like Kansas was a territory and not a state yet “a while.” The winery and vineyards at Murgo are exceptional not only for the fact that the family has been running them for over 150 years. The location, on the slopes of Mt. Etna, brings forth wine which are unlike anything else in the world. Volcanic soil imparts shockingly refreshing characteristics to these wines, crafted from grapes native to Sicily. Exceptional soil elaborates exceptional wines. Murgo is also a fully working diverse farm. Man cannot live on bread, or wine, alone. With that in mind, the Scammacca family farms olive trees, citrus groves, and many other excellent produce to serve in their restaurant. This is the definition of “farm to table,” and they do it the right way. They want you to feel at home, so the wine and food are like they’d serve to themselves. Because it is the wine and food they serve to themselves.
PAITIN – The Elia family has lived on and run their Paitin vineyard for more than 200 years and eight generations. They have been able to arizste (a word in the local dialect which means to resist, persevere and thrive) on this property come what may. Not only have they lived through the challenges of weather and “civilization,” they have learned and prospered. The current stewards of the family legacy, Giovanni, Silvano and Luca, are using the wisdom learned from previous generations coupled with the experience they’ve personally acquired from living with the vines to make some of the best wines we’ve ever seen from Paitin. They are also good and charitable folks. Come meet one of the family at the Multiple Sclerosis Wine Auction this May! The Elias are the honorary chairs for the annual Multiple Sclerosis wine auction. Call 205.802.9022 or better yet, email Scott@ThePigBham for more information.
