What Does Your Front Door Say About You?
Ask the Designer
We often use color to express ourselves—in our clothes, our decor, and our art. Credible psychology has linked color to certain personalities. What does the color of your front door say about you?
I’ve been wanting to wallpaper an area in my house, but have heard it’s very difficult and very expensive. Is this a DYI project or do I need a pro? What’s your advise on putting up wallpaper?
>
I love wallpaper! And I always think its worth it! I am not a DIY kinda girl. In my day-to-day business, I encourage my clients to hire a professional; to not only install, but also to measure and advise on how much material to order. Matching repeats, having seam lines disappear, and finishing with less waste, are all benefits of hiring a professional wallpaper hanger. (But props to you peeps that can DIY!) - SHEA BRYARS, Shea Bryars Design
I don’t like my kitchen cabinets, but the quotes to get new ones are so expensive. Do you have any creative modifications I can make to what’s there now, that can update their look?
>
Paint is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to freshen up lack-luster cabinets. New color and sheen go a long way, as well as changing the hardware. Going from an old rustic finish to a fresh shiny new one can make a huge difference.
Wood Door
Homeowners who keep their doors a traditional wooden finish are generous and down to earth, like this grounded finish. They are kind, sweet and all who enter will feel welcomed.
- SARAH JERNIGAN, Sarah Jernigan Designs
Should I put a rug in my dining room, and if so, what kind? It seems to attract a mess under my dinning room table, and it’s a difficult spot to clean. Is it easier to go rugless?
>
The answer depends on several factors: (1) How often you eat at the table; (2) what other soft goods are in the room; and (3) the age of the children that will eat there regularly. For example, if you only use your dining room table a handful of times each year, then cleaning underneath it may be worth the extra time to have a rug that pulls the room together. If, on the other hand, your family eats every meal at the table, then it may be too much maintenance especially with younger children. Also, you will want to consider whether there are other soft goods in the room (like draperies, upholstered walls, banquettes, seat cushions, pillows, etc.) that will help dampen noise. If there are only hard surfaces, it could be too loud to enjoy conversation over meals, and a rug may be the only way to keep the noise down. If you do choose to add a rug under the table, there are low pile outdoor rugs that repel stains and look fantastic.
Red Door
A red door says, “Welcome!” If you have a red door, you also enjoy attention and try to live life to the fulliset. It goes hand-in-hand with entertaining. In Scotland it signifies the owner has paid off their mortgage.
- STEPHANIE LYNTON, Stephanie Lynton Home
>
What’s the most economical way to have some of my furniture re-upholstered? Remember that this is an investment. Use the best fabric and craftsman you can find. It’s true - you get what you pay for! Ask to see previous work and ask their opinion regarding the fabrics you want to work with on a particular piece of furniture. - CHARLANN ANDERSON, DSR Wholesale Showroom
Gray Door
If you paint your door gray, you are indecisive and prefer to compromise—giving both sides of an argument equal weight.
I have some hand-me-down furniture I don’t really like. I also don’t have the space to put it anywhere. However, I do have a degree of sentimental attachment to some of it. What do you recommend?
>
If your space is limited, I would pull the pieces you are attached to and then choose what makes the most sense to keep in your space. Whether that ends up being a chair, ottoman, or small side table, most furniture is fairly easy to update. You can replace the upholstery, re-stain or re-paint wood finishes, replace knobs/pulls, etc... These simple changes can make a world of difference when trying to incorporate hand-me-down furniture into your home. - CATHERINE SMITH, Design Supply Shop
White Door
A white door represents a guest’s journey into simple and organized home decor.
FRED’S ADVICE When talking with younger buyers, I always recommend they look for items that can be used in various ways. Being young adults they will most likely move several times due to job changes, income changes and family dynamics. As an example a small cabinet may be purchased to use as a liquor cabinet/home bar. In their next home it could be used to hold a tv, or as a dining room server, or in an entrance hall. Try to avoid buying an item that has limited uses. - - - Fred Dryss is the owner of AVONDALE ANTIQUES located at 4301 3rd Ave S.

Should I Move in With My Boyfriend?
2 Paint It White
>>> My boyfriend and I have discussed moving in together. It makes sense financially, but my mother is telling me it’s a bad idea. He’s getting all the perks of a marriage without any of the commitments. His discussions of marriage are noncommittal, and says this is a good way to see if a marriage would work. What should I do?
but, rather, the important component linked to cohabitation/marriage and divorce is the age the individuals were when they made that first big commitment. Religious beliefs also tend to play a big role in this decision and the struggle to make it. Many individuals, as well as professionals, see it as your mother does.
So, your mom isn’t wrong. He definitely gets the perks of marriage without the commitment once you move in. As the old saying goes…he gets to have the milk without buying the cow, so why would he want to buy the cow if he already gets the milk for free. Moving in together prior to marriage is usually a very personal decision. Have you considered the possibility of you and your mother sharing a different set of values?
I decided to ask for a bit of input from a man… here was his response: “My opinion is, if a man wants to move in with a woman and is non-committal on the future… Beware! I think it means he doesn’t understand what being “with someone” means and/or what is expected of a man!!!”
You are definitely not alone in this dilemma. Many people struggle with the decision of living together prior to marriage. It typically makes a lot of sense financially to NOT spend money on two homes, especially if you are already staying together often or plan to get married. There is some benefit to knowing a person’s living habits prior to marriage. Research exists to support the argument that couples are more likely to divorce if they have lived together prior to marriage, but similar research exists to support the argument that couples are less likely to divorce if they have lived together prior to marriage. Other research indicates that cohabitation prior to marriage is not actually linked to divorce,
Maybe there are some questions you should consider before making the decision. How old are you and your boyfriend? Is there a plan for marriage, or is this just to save money and/or have a roommate with benefits? What is the plan for one of you or both of you, if this cohabitation situation doesn’t work out? I think the most important thing is for you to determine what is good for you! Though I do think it is reasonable to take into consideration the input from your parents (age does sometimes equal a bit of wisdom most of the time), this is one of those big girl/grown-up decisions you get to make regarding YOUR life! Whether you succeed or whether you fail, you will know it was your decision. Just be prepared to take ownership of the end result.

Although the interior color of your house may be to your liking, it’s amazing how much different it shows as all white. Owners may say- let the new owner paint it. While that’s a logical suggestion, most people can’t envision anything, and they view all white as clean and open.
3 Go Ultra Minimal
This will probably be the first suggestion an agent will tell you. And just because you think it’s ok, chances are it needs to be much more sparse. Tabletops shouldn’t have hardly anything on them. Take down all the personal pictures. Hide kitchen appliances. Take clothes and other things out of your closets to make them look bigger. You’ll also probably need to have some pieces of furniture removed from your house.
4 Mind Your Countertops
It’s amazing how important kitchen counter tops can sway an interested buyer. While it may not be feasible to change them out, don’t be surprised if a buyer passes simply because you don’t have granite countertops.
5 Clean Up the Landscaping
Think super clean. All of your beds should be orderly, and an investment in mulch is a good one. As Drew Cater at Cater Landscaping will tell you- your landscaping can add up to 20% onto the selling price.
6 Get an Agent
People who look at a hot market and think they could sell their own house, are usually fooling themselves. Even if they’re capable of managing everything that is involved, it will become a full time job. The paperwork alone is overwhelming. Make no mistake- agents earn their commission.

BATTLE REPUBLIC Homewood
Highlights We can all agree with science that resistance training is how to achieve those toned arms and legs we desperately want; however, not everyone ‘enjoys’ traditional resistance training. Battle Republic introduces resistance in a new way - through 190-pound, aqua bags. The black lights change with every round and half way through, when your lungs and shoulders are burning, there’s a time that allows your heart rate to (somewhat) come down while using bodyweight and kettle bell exercises. By the end of class, although your arms, shoulders and back will be toast, you won’t be able to help but walk with a little more swag. Battle Republic provides the option to get a heart rate monitor that will send an email, immediately after class, with the results from your workout. Before I got to my car, I knew the amount of calories I burned, my heart rate through class, and other stats. Definitely something that sets this workout apart!
Takeaways The battle is not an angry battle. It is about tapping into the fighter we all have inside – fighting for yourself, fighting for stress relief, fighting for a better tomorrow, fighting for your friend(s) and family, etc. The battle is empowerment.
This workout is geared toward you if...
BATTLE REPUBLIC
You’re a eginner and up. Lights are low, people have no time to be looking around, there is no kicking in the boxing sequences, and there is little-to-no jumping impact. Before you go, realize there is a slight learning curve, but you won’t always feel uncoordinated. The coaches carefully guide the class through set-up, proper safety stances and punching sequences. Private showers, heart rate monitors, towels for class, and gloves are provided.

QUINCE
CAMELLIA
REDBUD
Usually they’re the first things to bloom as Spring approaches in late January/early February. They’re tight small red flowers that grow from medium sized (4 foot) bushes. They like full sun, but will flower to a lesser extent in moderate shade. BLOOMS- LATE JAN-FEB
The official flower of Alabama. Big flowers that are usually red and pink. This evergreen’s leaves are waxy. Camellias like shade and can grow to be over 10 feet tall.
A very locally prominent tree that signals Spring is on its way. Redbuds are more purple than red, and have a long bloom cycle from (February into early April.) Its small tight flowers grow along the branches producing color when most everything is still dormant. BLOOMS- FEB-EARLY APRIL
BLOOMS- FEB-MARCH
Colors of the Season A Birminghamian’s guide to Late-Winter to Early-Summer Blooming Flora. At the end of the winter do you start to notice the different blooming trees and shrubs around Bham? If you’re like a lot of people, you’ve tried to take note of what it is, and remember it for your landscaping ideas. Unfortunately you forget and it’s dropped its blooms and seems to blend in with all the other greenery. We collected some of the most common flora in the area that’s bloomed so far, and let you know what’s what. Our selections are put in chronological order of when they bloom starting earlier this year.
YELLOW BELL Bright yellow, leggy shrubs that are usually waist high, but can get higher. Yellow bells are considered a semi-evergreen, but are usually seen as not having any leaves in winter. Yellow Bells like a little shade. BLOOMS- LATE FEB-EARLY MAR
BRIDAL WREATH SPIREA
JAPANESE MAGNOLIA/TULIP TREE
CHERRY TREE
The Spring blooming white flowers grow in a cascading fashion. The shrub size seems to be about 5-6 feet tall, but can grow into almost resembling a tree. Its best look is as a focal plant. They do best in light shade.
People often refer to these as a tulip tree because their massive pink pedals resemble a tulip flower. You’ll usually see these just after redbuds, about the same time as the cherry trees. The giant 4-6” flowers are showstoppers, and seen on trees usually about 15 feet tall. BLOOMS- EARLY MAR
There are a couple of different species of cherries found around Birmingham, but they’ll have either white or pink flowers. Cherries bloom early, but they’ll drop their leaves early in the Fall. Cherries are a Southern symbol of Spring.
BLOOMS- LATE FEB
BLOOMS- EARLY MAR
DOGWOOD
OAK LEAF HYDRANGEA
ENDLESS SUMMER HYDRANGEA
If you don’t recognize Dogwoods you may as well hand in your Southern card. They’re as familiar as an azalea. Flowers are pink, white or a combination. Grows best as an undercanopy tree. BLOOMS- LATE MAR
These guys are all over the place in Birmingham, and are almost always found in the shade. Hand-sized leaves create a beautiful backdrop to big fat white blooms. BLOOMS- EARLY MAY
Beautiful plants that have an incredibly long bloom season. Their shade of blue is altered by their soil conditions. They prefer shady conditions, and should be cut back at the end of Fall. BLOOMS- LATE MAY-OCT.

Barri Thompson is an interior designer who offers full service interior design for both residential and commercial projects in Birmingham and surrounding cities. Barri has worked on a variety of projects bringing her laser sharp focus to her clients diverse homes. Her mantra is ‘love where you live.’
Love Where You Live Interior Designer, Barri Thompson, takes you inside some of her projects and inspirations.
STEEL CITY LOFT This loft was such a fun project. Mostly because my client (who later became my very best friend) loved color and wanted to use as much as possible to warm up his industrial space and create a happy, vibrant home. He is an avid book collector (mostly art, interiors, travel and fashion), so we started by styling his bookshelves with all of his collectables which included vintage throws, pottery, found objects, candles and obviously plenty of colorful books! When I began this project, my client had already purchased the Jonathan Adler dining table. We added some punch with custom chairs from Kelly O’Neal in a fabulous cobalt blue wool and for a little extra “fun” we threw sheep skins on the Bertoia chairs to warm them up. The dining area such is an inviting space to hang out, entertain, sip some wine and enjoy a home cooked meal.
BACHELORETTE PAD When my client, Kelly, hired me to work on her Highland Park flat, the first thing she told me was she wanted it to be girly, sexy and serine. I must say, I could not have been more thrilled! We started the process by designing custom pieces for the breakfast nook as well as her master bedroom. When I discovered the gorgeous Tiffany blue and gold wallpaper I knew we had to use it somewhere. We added the channel back banquette in a soft blue faux ostrich which was a perfect fit for her space and then sprinkled in the fantastic vintage Italian dining chairs (amazing find!) and the iconic Saarinen table. We needed to warm up the floors a bit, so I used a caramel and white cow hide rug which tied in to the skull on the wall. This space was extremely tight, so it was a bit of a challenge to make everything work. In the end, it became a cozy, feminine nook where Kelly could have her morning coffee with bright light, or an intimate dinner with friends.

HOMES STEEL CITY LOFT My client’s bedroom area is adjacent to his art studio, so we carried the colorful theme into this space. The metal bed is a Calvin Klein design outfitted with with deep black/grey bedding for the first layer and then added mustard, orange and white and even a little hot pink for the second and third layers. It’s important when dressing your bed to have at least a couple of layers so you can incorporate texture, softness, and of course comfort. The neon sign was such an edgy touch. I really love how the pink pops off the brick wall and adds a bit of a retro feel. We found an antique settee and had it upholstered in an orange suede and then added a contrast welt of python skin just for a little extra design detail. The skull over the bed was a great find at the High Point market and the metallic horns just added to my love of this piece! When we started on Matt’s bedroom, he had already purchased the side tables, but we decided to have them lacquered in a rich turquoise to brighten up the black metal bed and also give some color to the brick wall. It goes without saying that his love for books was carried into the bedroom/studio area so that he was never far away from inspiration. Little did I know that working on this loft would bring such a beautiful and forever friendship my way.
HOLLYWOOD REGENCY One of my long time clients came to me and said she was ready to remodel her kitchen and she wanted drama and glam. Well, from the moment I walked into Triton Stone and saw this stunning marble called Calacatta Cervaiole, I knew we were off to a great start! The client’s kitchen is fairly large, so we purchased five slabs to run the marble as a full backsplash. The beautiful German faucets came from our friend, Harriett Alley, at Fixtures and Finishes. We used the smaller faucet that you see in the picture for the wet bar area and standard sized faucets for the two additional sinks. We painted the walls a beautiful warm white and repainted the cabinets Caviar by Sherwin Williams (deep black with just a touch of a blue undertone). All of the appliances came from our dear friends at Allsouth.
BACHELORETTE PAD Kelly wanted a very soft and feminine bedroom. Our challenge was to create that space while also incorporating a dedicated area for her home office. We started by teaming up with a firm in LA who had done many custom pieces for my clients throughout my career. We decided to go with a grown up “princess” bed upholstered in pearl patent leather and finished with chrome nailheads. We selected all of the bedding from Ann Gish which is absolutely exquisite! We had our LA team make the white lacquer and mirrored console as well as the two bedside tables. We purposefully had the right side table made with a bit of an Asian flair to tie back to our “Goddess lamp.” The sea foam green sofa pieces were an amazing find at a local antique store. They were in absolute disrepair, but Kelly and I loved them so much that we decided to solicit the help of a furniture repair guru. He was able to breathe life into the pieces again by re-working the cushions, painting the frames in a high gloss white and upholstering them in a gorgeous velvet. We added Jonathan Adler pendants over the bedside table and warmed up the wood floors with Angela Adams rugs. Kelly couldn’t decide which rug she loved the most, so we ended up with three so that she could change them seasonally or according to her mood.

Creating Curb Appeal By Drew Cater
After a cold and rainy winter, the sunshine and spring weather stirs a passion to head outside and enjoy all the outdoor activities you enjoy; eating meals on your deck, playing ball with your kids (human or animal), taking evening walks, and common for homeowners, sprucing up your outdoor living spaces. While the bright color of spring grass and budding blooms can create excitement about putting your green thumb to use, creating the outdoor living space you pinned on Pinterest can quickly become an overwhelming project. But it doesn’t have to be, there are easy ways to give your yard a quick facelift without spending every spring weekend doing lawn labor.
Drew Cater is the owner of Cater Design & Landscape which specializes in residential and commercial land design, installation, and maintenance with expertise in drainage solutions, erosion control and small stonework projects. Drew received his degree in Landscape Design and Horticulture from Auburn University and is a member of the Alabama Nursery and Landscape Association.
WARM WELCOME
START SMALL One of the easiest projects that can have the biggest visual impact is to is to brighten up the area around your mailbox. Add a few perennial blooms-flowers you can change out with the season-around the post or base area of the mailbox. This time of year daylilies or dianthus are a great pick. Also I suggest adding something that will remain and grow into the area such as a Knock Out Rose bush that will have wonderful bright blooms from spring to September or a blooming vine like Clematis that can grow up and around the mailbox post. Fill in the bed with shredded pine bark mulch and line the area bed area with a few large rocks to create a finished manicured look.
Create an inviting entry to your home by creating small beds or container gardens around your front porch or stairs leading to your front door. These don’t have to be large, elaborate beds but planting a few flowers, placing pinestraw, or fresh mulch can instantly perk up the exterior of your home. You can also make it personal by creating something that fits your personality. If you like fresh cut flowers, plant hydrangeas or dianthus for beautiful blooms that are easy to clip and place in any vase. If you like to cook, herb gardens with rosemary, basil and mint are not only beautiful and aromatic, but an easy way to get fresh ingredients for your dishes anytime.
DON’T FORGET
> JUST BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT, IT MAY NOT WORK. Your yard has its own micro-climate. It may have spots of full sun, no sun, slopping, or draining issues. It is important to understand your yard’s characteristics as well as existing and potential issues before starting any landscape project. Just because design elements or specific plants work in your neighbor’s yard or a picture on Pinterest doesn’t mean it will necessarily work for yours. As I said before, landscape design and installation for your entire yard can be be a large project, sometimes with a larger than assumed price tag. The key is to consider the money you put into your home’s landscape as an investment in the overall value of your property. The exterior landscape design and features of a property can increase the value up to 20%.
PLANT FOR THE FUTURE These quick and instant yard updates are great, but spring is also a great time to plant strategically. If you have been wanting to add shrubs, trees, or sod anywhere in your yard it is important to try to complete before the hot and sometimes dry summer months to ensure acclimation to the soil and optimal root growth. These elements are great way to create natural privacy or property division, but they take time to grow. Most plants, shrubs and creeping vines like Confederate Jasmine can take 3-5 years to fully mature and bloom year after year.

DIY BEFORE
A Swampy mess that was too shady to grow grass, and too sloped to create a practical lawn.
Building a Retaining Wall Getting a job done when the pros are too expensive or too busy.
If you’ve looked into getting anything done to, or around your home lately, you’ve probably noticed the quotes have come across as far more expensive than you thought. You may not have even been able to get anyone to do the job because they’re so booked. Even worse, they may not even return your phone calls. I guess that’s their way of telling you they’re not interested in the job? Maybe these are the consequences of a robust economy. Regardless, after we purchased a house with a neglected sloped backyard with no space or sun for a lawn, we needed to invest in major landscaping project with limited funds. The first thing we needed to do was remove six adult trees so we could get enough sun in the backyard to allow grass to grow. One local company quoted the job at $7,000. We were pointed to Kenny Malone who was able to do the job for less than half that. The next big job that required skilled labor was building a retaining wall that would create some ABOUT
flat space where we could lay sod for a useable lawn. Two landscape companies said they were too busy to meet our timetable, and one was nice enough to point us in the direction of his brick masons who, could do the job directly for a lot less money. We purchased all the supplies directly from various local suppliers to save on mark-ups, and only paid the brick mason and his crew for the labor. This only worked because we knew what we wanted- a 50foot wall roughly 4-5 feet tall made with cinder block and finished with stucco. Our brick mason did all of the measuring and told us what to order, and how much. The entire construction took a little less than two weeks. Like any structural job it required a ton of clean up that took as long as the job itself. And like anything, we spent more money than budgeted, but still came in over $5,000 less than having the work done by a professional landscaping company.

1 We needed to level off a portion of the yard to create a flat lawn, and control moisture. This also meant we had to cut down a lot of trees to get more direct sun and build a retaining wall. We rented a Bobcat for the day from Sunbelt which had to be brought in to move all of the dirt. Some of the dirt could be moved to the other side of the wall, but most had to be taken off premises, which meant another fee.

3. The footer was a mandatory for a wall this size. 4. The top of the cinder block was finished with brick. A drain was put in the bottom of the backside to filter out the tremendous amount of rain coming down the hill. In addition, the back of the wall was treated with a water proofing tar and then gravel was pored in to fill the area for drainage.

Should it Really Be a Deal Breaker? By Steve Odle
While there are many factors that would be considered a “deal breaker” like safety concerns, neighborhood or needed amenities, in most cases the following can be overcome.

COSMETIC
LANDSCAPING
A less-than-clean home with poor choices in paint or carpet color can be a bit disconcerting, but if you’ve found the right home, they are factors that can be easily addressed. Don’t give up your dream house over some tacky wallpaper. You may even be able to negotiate with the seller to replace some of the offensive items.
While the curb appeal may be less than ideal, the landscaping is something that can be spruced up with a little TLC. A dead lawn, oversized bushes or a lack of flowers can become a thing of the past with a little bit of work.
ROOM SIZE While the number of bedrooms is important, it does not really make sense to make your home purchase decision based on whether your 12-year-old bedroom suite will fit. If you have found the perfect home, buy new furniture to fit the new space. As a bonus, it will save you the work of moving it. Shopping for a new home is an exciting process. By knowing what to look for, you will soon be packing up and moving to your new “perfect-for-you” home.

Peck’s Points!
3 pointers for selling your current home ... and finding the next one. 1. Get Right on Price. It’s very easy to over price your home. Spending too much time on the Internet can walk you down that path quickly. Leaving, “wiggle room” or “room to negotiate” is detrimental to your sale and only helps other sellers in the area. 2. Clutter Less, Show More. I use the “Half & Half” rule. Look at flat surfaces of your home and remove half of the items. Next, remove half of those items. Same goes for pillows, clothes, pictures and books. You want to show the space of your home and allow the buyer to imagine their belongings in it; not how many figurines you can fit on a hallway table. 3. Visit Neighborhoods, Not Websites. The Internet offers an amazing array of choices for the home buyer and gives tons of very practical and useful information. However, home buying is a Process of Elimination rather than a Shopping Spree. This is where we will make a plan based on your wants and needs for your new home. Next, we will tour neighborhoods that have the most listings that meet your needs. Websites can help narrow down options, but spending time in a house is the only way to feel right at home.

TASTE FOR A CURE 2019 Parkinson Association of Alabama hosted Taste for the Cure at The Haven. The event offered attendees an opportunity to sample fare from a variety of Birmingham restaurants. They paired their tasting with a drink of their choice. While guests ‘tasted’ they could walk around and peruse the silent auction. To see the rest of the pictures visit abouttown.io.

PORTUGAL WINE Portugal might be something off the radar for some folks, but the values coming from this little country next to Spain are tremendous.
Dócil Loureiro, $17.99 – Another one of my favorite summer whites, this wine from Dirk Niepoort is also produced in the Vinho Verde region from the Loureiro grape, an indigenous variety that is the most heavily planted grape in this region. This wine is aimed at producing a white from Vinho Verde that truly expresses the terroir of the region: it is planted in granitic soils from 20+ year old vines, and completely hand-harvested. It is elegant and concentrated, with thirst-quenching acidity that makes it perfect to drink upon release. A little more serious than the bulk of wines coming out of this area, this Loureiro is a great match for chicken or pork along with shellfish.
Gone are the days of thinking of Portugal as a country producing strictly fortified, sweet styles of wine. While a good tawny port is still one of my favorite ways to end a meal, I have started gravitating more towards Portuguese table wines as I find they are offering exciting and exceptionally priced wines for the money. Portuguese winemakers are opting to work with their own, indigenous varieties instead of internationally favored ones, so don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of a lot of these grapes.
Nortico Alvarinho, $11.99 Aside from Port, Vinho Verde is likely the next wine coming from Portugal that you have seen on the shelves. Vinho Verde is located in Northern Portugal along the Minho river, and situated west of Rias Baixas, home to Spain’s most celebrated white wines, such as Albariño. Alvarihno is the local enunciation of the same grape, and similarly produces fresh, peachy whites with a hint of a salinity that makes them a perfect match for seafood. Vihno Verde wines are often dosed with a small amount of carbon dioxide to add a spritzy character to the wines - however, the Nortico Vinho Verde does not go through this process.
Fitapreta Tinto, $21.99 – Fitapreta is
Warres White Port $17.99 Add white port to your cocktail repertoire. Recreate the Portuguese aperitif and mix it with tonic; garnish with an orange, lemon or sprig of mint for a lower ABV (alcohol by volume) alternative to the classic gin and tonic. The slightly sweet, fruity port with the bitter tonic water strikes a perfect match.
a red wine produced in Alentejano, a region in southeast central Portugal, south of the Tejo river. The region is large and outputs a lot of bulk red wines, but the producers at Fitapreta are quality oriented – hand harvesting, employing indigenous yeast fermentation, and sustainably farmed - and truly succeed at producing a wine from the native varieties Aragonez and Trincadeira as well as the French variety Alicante Bouschet. This is, simply
put, one of the best wines available for someone wanting to pay less than $30. You’d be hard pressed to find a better summertime red for the grill.
