ASK AN EXPERT

Would you say interest rates will inevitably be on the rise in the coming months, and what do you think that will mean for local home selling prices this Spring and Summer? “The Fed predicts that they will raise interest rates by three quarters of a point by the end of 2017. Some experts believe that rates will only actually be raised by one quarter due to businesses capital spending slowing down, because of uncertainty over the new president’s policies. It is safe to say that we will see them raise somewhere between one quarter and three quarters of a point.” ABOUT

“Jermaine Spann was there for me every step of the way.”

When Viyesha Williams listed her home for sale with Jermaine Spann of ARC Realty, she knew he was trustworthy and dependable. “I just didn’t realize how quickly he would sell my home,” Viyesha says. The right buyer visited Jermaine’s first open house. “For my new home, Jermaine guided me to a great neighborhood where I was able to build a home to meet my needs. From our first meetings with the building team to my final walk-through, Jermaine was there for me, paying attention to every detail and always a calm presence. That’s important because building a home can be an emotional experience.” Jermaine says helping customers like Viyesha is a privilege. “I have the support of my entire ARC Realty family to make the process easy for my clients.” For more information on working with Jermaine and to see all of ARC Realty’s listings, visit www.arcrealtyco.com.

Handley Breaux Designs Top Tips for Planning Your Dream Wedding in 2017

1

Handley McCrory

Owner & Executive Planner Handley Breaux Designs 205-900-8804 handley@handleybreauxdesigns.com

Draw your guests’ eyes upwards. Brides are leaning towards more impactful design moments for their receptions as opposed to a monotonous sea of tables. A floral chandelier is always a Handley Breaux Designs favorite! Photo credit: Jett Walker Photography

4

Wow your guests!

Don’t be afraid of color.

Neutral weddings are on their way out, and colorful affairs are taking center stage. The right pops of color combinations can go a long way! Photo credit: Jett Walker Photography

5

Incorporate your personality. A wedding should be a reflection of the bride & groom’s personalities. Instead of a traditional groom’s cake, a coffee and donut bar is perfect for a donut-loving couple! This sweet bride surprised her groom with this at the reception. Photo credit: Be Light Photography

3

Since we see so many weddings, it is a welcomed challenge to find ways to make each wedding stand out. We loved this snowy exit for a December wedding! Photo credit: Heather Durham Photography

2

Don’t forget the little details.

It is important to remember that each little detail of your wedding day will be photographed. Put extra thought into selecting your shoes, ring box, and even a special hanger for your dress. If you have all of these things together, you will have a very happy wedding planner and photographer! Photo credit: Arden Photography

6

Be consistent. We always encourage creating a monogram or personalized logo that we can carry through the entire wedding design. Using the logo on the paper suite, cups, napkins, putting it on the cake, and even making it into a light projection will really pull everything together. Photo credit: Spindle Photography

An Interview with

Stephanie Whitaker founder of Engaged Wedding Library So, what exactly is a “wedding library”?

Engaged is a local wedding planning resource boutique, representing more than 100 local wedding vendors. Brides come to us for help finding vendors that are vetted, trusted and excellent at what they do. We also help brides get their planning started and keep them on track throughout their engagement. Do you have books like a traditional library?

We have some! But mainly we have samples of our vendor’s work, photo albums, brochures and price lists. We have local wedding publications and a list of local bridal events…so many helpful things for brides-to-be. You could say we have a wealth of information…just like a library. How does Engaged differ from a wedding planner?

GREAT QUESTION! The biggest difference is that we will not be with a bride on her wedding day. We are HUGE fans of wedding planners, but we know that most brides do not hire a full-service wedding planner. At Engaged, we focus on the basics: Defining a bride’s wedding style, establishing the budget, offering vendor recommendations based on their needs, and keeping them on track. We can help brides create a custom wedding day timeline as well. We always recommend that they have a wedding planner or someone to help execute the wedding day. No bride or mother of the bride should endure that stress!

SAVING MONEY!? How do you help brides save money?

Brides can join the library and get their own “Library Card” which gives them access to discounts and perks from all of our vendor partners. We also give our members free tickets to local bridal shows that we have partnered with. Right now, bride members can get 2 free tickets to the Believe Bridal Event at the Grand Bohemian on Feb 19. Tickets are $20 each, so brides would save $10 by becoming a library member.

How do brides join the library?

Super simple. They can come by our shop, or they can join online and we will mail them a library membership card. Right now, we are running a special and membership is only $30!!! It’s normally $98. And, we offer a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE if membership does not pay for itself. We believe that EVERY bride in Bham should join Engaged. Let’s go back to the vendor perks and discounts. Can you give me an example?

Sure! All 110 of our vendor partners offer something of value to our member brides. Most discounts range from $50 to $150 off. Our top perks right now are $250 off a wedding gown purchase with Heidi Elnora, complimentary Honeymoon Suite with a wedding party room block at the Tutwiler Hotel, and $200 off the booking fee at Bridge Street!

ABOUT

22 T O W N

What is your favorite wedding trend right now?

Stephani e & Matthew

We love all the personal touches. We’ve recently seen wedding favors purchased from a bride’s favorite charity. The wedding guests received beautiful handmade ornaments crafted by Prodigal Pottery, an outreach program for the King’s Home. Also, we are a HUGE fan of weddings with a cohesive vibe and feel to it. When all the elements of the wedding are intentional and part of an overall design plan, it makes things personal and magical! We offer Style Boards for our brides that need help pulling together their “wedding look” from the hundreds of photos that are on their wedding Pinterest board. These have been a big hit!

PROMOTION Have you run across any challenges with this unique concept?

Yeah- for sure. For now, our biggest challenge is getting the word out about what we do. Because “Go to your nearest wedding library” is not on the to-do list of a new bride-to-be, we have to work hard to get the word out. We are so passionate about helping hundreds of brides this year and we definitely have the capacity to do so. We just need them to come on over to Edgewood and see us!

What is your favorite part of a wedding?

For me, it’s the dress. I have always loved wedding dresses. Nothing makes me happier than tulle, lace, luxurious satin and the color white.

If you could tell brides one thing, what would it be?

Oh, I have more than one… First, I would say to enjoy being engaged. This time of celebrating you and your groom goes by super fast. Try to savor every moment! Secondly, try to focus on the fact that you are not only about to be a bride, but more importantly, a wife! You are about to start a LIFE ADVENTURE with this person. That is a big deal! Lastly, don’t compare your wedding to what you see on Instagram, online, and in all the fancy wedding publications. (A lot of these weddings are not real anyway!) Focus on making your wedding about you and your groom.

How can brides get in touch with you?

Our website is EngagedBirmingham.com. From there, brides can join the library, check out upcoming bridal events, and schedule their appointment. Brides can always email us at steph@engagedbirmingham.com or call us at 205-637-0735. Our shop is located at 1018 Oxmoor Road in Edgewood, right next to Taco Mama.

>> PLANK TO PUSH Primary, target muscle(s): shoulders and triceps Secondary muscle(s): chest and core

>> SINGLE ARM DUMBBELL ROWS Primary, target muscle(s): upper back and biceps Secondary muscle(s): oblique abdominals

SET UP: Elbows under shoulders, core is braced/tight/engaged. Feet are shoulder width apart.

HOW TO: In a controlled motion, pull dumbbell (or kettle bell) straight up, weight stopping at hip and lower to starting position.

HOW TO: Start in a plank position. Place one hand under shoulder keeping elbow pulled close to ribs this keeps the concentrated work in the triceps – followed by other arm.

* TIP: You may be tempted to open your chest as you pull weight up. Don’t! This will guarantee the resistance stay in our back and biceps without straining your shoulder. This will also guarantee your abs stay locked on. That’s a win-win!

* TIP: To make it more difficult, fatigue muscles by doing all reps on one side before switching. For example, if you’re doing 20 total reps (10 on each side) do all 10 on the left side before switching to right arm. On the next set, start on the right side to pre-fatigue those muscles first.

SET UP: Split stance with a slight bend in knees. Keeping back flat to protect lower back and engage core.

<< UPRIGHT ROW TO OVERHEAD PRESS / CLEAN & PRESS Primary, target muscle(s): shoulders and back Secondary muscle(s): triceps, biceps and legs SET UP: Feet shoulder width apart, hands a thumb-distance from quads, shoulders back and chest open. Brace those abs! HOW TO: Keeping bar close to the body and pull the bar to chest. * TIP: This is one of the best multi-muscle movements, combining two movements into one and elevates the heart rate. To spike your heart rate higher, lift heels on the upright row and use legs to press bar overhead. Hello, cardio!

<< SMITH MACHINE ASSISTED PULL-UPS AND CHIN-UPS Primary, target muscle(s): latissimus Dorsi (commonly known as lats) Secondary muscle(s): biceps and core SET UP: Adjusting Smith Machine bar height can be tricky - Higher the bar, the easier. Lower the bar makes this move more difficult because you are pulling more body weight. HOW TO: With your arms straightened, allow your body to hang from the bar, heels down, toes up. Next, pull yourself upward to the final position where your chest nearly touches the bar and your chin is over the bar. * DID YOU KNOW?: The difference in a pull-up and a chin-up is hand grip. A pull up, hands are facing out with arms outside shoulders. A chin up, hands are facing in and arms are shoulder width apart. Both grips work the same muscles; however, a pull-up focuses more on the lats, and the chin-up focuses more on the biceps.

>> WALL SIT WITH STEERING WHEEL Primary, target muscle(s): quadriceps, hamstrings, shoulders Secondary muscle(s): glutes, core, triceps SET UP: Squat until quads are parallel to floor (approx. knee height), feet flat, back flat against a wall, weighted plate in hand. HOW TO: In squat position (isometric holds, like wall sits, fire up muscles!), extend arms to shoulder height, holding plate at 9 & 3 o’clock positions. In a small movement, rotate plate 90 degrees back and forth for 30 seconds, longer if able. * TIP: Keeping your back and shoulder blades against the wall is important for two reasons: This keeps air ways open allowing oxygen and blood to get to your muscles. Doing this also ensures abs are locked on and your core is working.

<< CABLE FACE PULLS ON BOSU BALL Primary, target muscle(s): shoulders and upper back (Rear deltoids, traps, rhomboids and rotator cuff muscles Secondary muscle(s): biceps. BOSU incorporates legs and core SET UP: Attach a rope or handles to cable pulley. Place BOSU on desired side (see DID YOU KNOW for explanation). *BOSU is the intermediate to high option. HOW TO: Facing a cable pulley with a rope or dual handles attached, pull the weight directly towards your face, separating your hands as you do so. Keep your upper arms parallel to the ground. * DID YOU KNOW?: The BOSU, as funny and as complicated as it looks, serves multiple purposes? If you stand on the flat portion (bubble/ball side down), this engages your outer thighs, known as abductors. If you stand on the bubble/ball (flat part down), this engages your inner thighs, known as adductors. Try both and feel the difference!

Jessica Burson and Johnathan Bush exchanged vows on a perfect Birmingham spring day. The couple then headed to the home of

Michelle & Ken Bush, the parents of the groom, for an intimate gathering of close friends and family. The couple incorporated

personal details by adding an embroidered note to the father of the

bride’s tie and a life size card board cut out of Johnathan’s best friend, Thomas Holloway, who was included in all the evening’s

activities. Holloway, who is serving active military duty in Korea, was unable to attend the wedding, in person, anyway! Candle

I’D LIKE TO PROPOSE A TOAST Sparkling Wines Worth Celebrating

This historic home can be part of your family history. . .

Col Vetoraz Prosecco Brut Italy $19.99

The ‘Col Vet’ is known for its balance of citrus fruit and creamy texture, the latter of which is brought about by a frothy, lively mousse. Good depth without being heavy or sweet.

HOOVER-RANDLE home & gardens

Dosnon and Lepage Recolte Blanche France $59.99 100% Chardonnay fermented in Puligny-Montrachet barrels. Hand harvesting and minimal dosage as well as no fining or filtering make this wine very expressive and a model for Grower Champagne. Mineral, silky pit fruit, citrus peel and saline integrated with well-water purity.

Celebrate your event at this one-of-a-kind Southern estate. The Hoover-Randle Home, built by William Hoover for his family in 1947, is situated on six acres of beautifully manicured gardens in historic Bluff Park in Hoover, Alabama. It is perfect for any event: intimate wedding ceremony (indoors or out), reception, dinner, party or corporate gathering. . .from elegant to trendy. . .barbeque to seated dinner.

Leitz Rose’ Sekt Brut Germany $25.99

Brand new for us from Germany! 100% de-stemmed Pinot Noir that spends just 3 hours extracting color and from the grapes, resulting in biting flavors of grapefruit and a balance of red fruit sweetness. Best food-pairing bubbly of the group.

Eric & Jamie Photography

Louis de Grenelle Platine Brut Cremant de Loire France $19.99 While the Rose’ was first on our map, the Grenelle Brut is marked by it’s fine and consistent pearlage (bubbles) and bright pear, lime and lemon flavors.

WEDDINGS CELEBRATIONS CORPORATE EVENTS A. Margarine Traditionelle Brut France $39.99

I consider this classic label to be the best value available from Champagne. A complex wine that shows floral, fruit, generosity and refinement seamlessly.
