What Color Looks Best On You?
Are you warm or cool? Meaning: Which colors work best with your skin tone, hair & eye color?
Are you warm?
Your skin will often feel like it has more yellow, peachy, or golden tones to it. Do you tan easily in the sun, are your veins more greenish, do you have dark hair and dark eyes?
Your best colors: Fiery reds, oranges, rusty tones, creams, camel, and all things earth tones. If you love cool hues, opt for warmer versions of the cool color families like olive, fuschia, violet and orchid.
Are you neutral?
TOP 5 WOMEN’S WORKOUT SHOES
For 2023
Recomended Most by Personal Trainers
Are you cool?
Your skin will lean pink, red, or blue. Do you have blue eyes and pale skin? Check. Do you burn easily in the sun? Check. Do you have blue-ish veins rather than green?
Your best colors: Sky blues, cobalt, frosty purples, emerald greens, light grassy tones and anything pastel. If you like to wear warmer colors, try lipstick reds or super-pale yellows. Avoid palettes that are too orange or bright yellow—they’ll overpower you.
Neutral undertones will have difficulty discerning whether they are warm or cool. You could be a hybrid of both. But, lucky you, most colors will look great on your skin tone. Your best colors:
Because your complexion is neutral you can play up and down the color wheel, just avoid things that are too neon—they will throw you off balance.

FIT THIS SPRING for Body,
Mind, and Spirit
by: Leslie Dobbins
majority of people see winter as the “best time to get in shape.” Over half of those people who make a new year’s resolution will quit their new workout regime within a month. I feel now is the best time for people to start, or ramp up, their workout routine. The best gift you can give yourself, and loved ones, is the healthiest version of yourself.
WEATHER
The weather is starting to improve, and the days are getting longer. The sunlight helps us feel more energetic and less lethargic. So start getting outside now. If you’re someone who likes to train before work, it’s nice that you’re not heading into the gym in the dark.
DISTRACTIONS
There are less distractions. With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season over, and less social events to attend, use right-now as a time to get focused! Make your health and fitness goals top priority this month.
THE COUNTDOWN IS ON
There are only a few weeks left before summer starts! Whether you are new to exercise, or a seasoned pro, it is always beneficial to have a goal in mind. Many people will use a vacation as motivation to workout. Use your summer travels as a reward for being so good now and in the following months.
ADVENTURES IN
DIETING
by: Megan Underwood (self described Diet Addict)
FROM ALL MEAT TO ALL VEG
Five months ago, I slammed the brakes on my carnivory, yanked the wheel hard left and did a complete 180. I became a vegan. VE-GAN. True story. I was stuck in my carnivorous (all meat) diet. My body had not changed one bit, despite my rigorous gym routine and ultra-restrictive eating style. My goal has been to fit better in my clothes, cross my legs with ease (only thick-thighed friends will get this), and feel good naked. I had maintained my resistance to step on the scale, but had a good idea I weighed more than I wanted to.
One Sunday morning, I had a complete mental and emotional break down as I threw pair after pair of jeans on the floor, unable to pull them over my legs or button them around my waist. Like, code-red rage! Something - or somethings - had to change.
Two days later, I was eating a strictly vegan dietnot even vegetarian, but full-blown vegan. If you’re going to go, you might as well go all the way. So I did - from meat and animal products only, to fruits, vegetables, and limited grains only. No animal products whatsoever.
Nothing happened.
I bet you were expecting a super success reportdrastic weight loss; dropping sizes; clear, glowy skin; better sleep; general increased well-being. Nada. I was hungry. A lot. It was nearly impossible to reach satiety. And my digestive system was a total wreck (as you can probably imagine). My strength steadily declined. My overall feeling was meh.
I stuck with it for 10-ish weeks and pulled the same 180 move back to the meats. A slow transition is not my style (although I would highly recommend it for anyone else). It worked! I had shocked my body with the drastic swap. Returning to the carnivore way brought back all the documented benefits I had originally experienced: energy, stamina, strength, slimmer frame, better sleep, elevated mood. I hacked the system. Pro tip: If what you’re doing is no longer working, quit doing it.
*Disclaimer: To be fair to my vegan friends, there is a great possibility that I did not execute my experiment wisely. No doubt I could have greatly benefited from certain supplementary vitamins and minerals to help me achieve better balance. Mark my words, veganism will circle back around and I will try it again. It will be another slam and yank, but I will be more intentional about my efforts to research and follow successful vegan resources.

Why Cryotherapy Has Become So Popular
Life’s ailments and aches can take over our lives if we let them, but there are ways to combat the constant attacks on our body. Cryotherapy is the health and wellness technique of the future - but we are able to experience the benefits today! The unique treatment uses freezing and near-freezing temperatures to heal the body. It’s proven to help with all sorts of healthy body adjustments including weight loss, pain relief, muscle healing, improving skin quality, sleep benefits, boost recovery time, and reducing inflammation, stress, dementia, and symptoms of eczema. There is a reason that it is the preferred way for professional athletes to quickly heal after an injury or strain. While it sounds like a complicated process, cryotherapy is a quick and easy treatment that can be easily found in Birmingham with specialists like those at Gunn Dermatology.
There are two basic treatment options when it comes to cryotherapy. CRYO Arctic offers full body treatment while CRYO Penguin provides a more localized solution. The Arctic process covers the entire body with healing effects while keeping the user safe and comfortable. The treatment levels include Beginner (recommended for first-time users), Intermediate (for occasional users), Advanced (for regular users), Professional (for athletes and frequent users), and Polar Fit Care. Temperatures range from -111 degrees celsius to -140.
The CRYO Penguin uses liquid nitrogen vapor to treat specific parts of the body. Different targeting options including Facial (face and neck), CRYO Body (arms, chest, stomach, thighs, back, and buttocks), CRYO Sport Upper Body (head, shoulders, biceps, triceps, elbows, wrists, hands, chest, and back), and CRYO Sport Lower Body (hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles, and feet).
AND, WITH SPRING BREAK UPON US...
Swimsuit season is almost here. Now is the time to try PHYSIQ body contouring. It reduces fat in the body while building muscle and tightening skin. It’s the only treatment process in the United States that utilizes Sequential Thermal & Electrical Pulse (STEP) technology. This is created by combining Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) and Superluminescent Diode Matrix (SDM). The whole process only takes 15 to 30 minutes and requires zero recovery time afterwards. Talk about a convenient way to look your best!
For more information about any of these treatments, contact Dr. Holly Gunn at Gunn Dermatology for a consultation: 32 Church St, Mountain Brook 205-415-7536.

PDO THREADS
How to Stimulate Natural Collagen and Get an Immediate Lift to Facial Areas
What is a PDO Thread?
Have you heard of a PDO Thread? Solid Filler PDO Smooth Thread Therapy is a technique that stimulates natural collagen production while offering immediate smoothing to facial areas plagued by lines and wrinkles. It can increase facial volume and can also help improve lip and smile lines.
PDO threads are tiny synthetic surgical sutures made of polydioxanone. In aesthetic services, they can be used for a wide variety of purposes. At Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, specifically, we use PDO Smoothing Threads.
HOW DO PDO THREADS GET NATURAL RESULTS?
PDO Smoothing Threads are used to repair and tighten the skin. This type of treatment helps reduce wrinkles or crepey skin by replacing and adding collagen and elastin back into the skin. It helps repair damaged areas and encourages new collagen production. This means you’ll see more natural results by stimulating those biological processes.
Koch Aesthetics offers FREE VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS.
And, initial consultations can be done via video. Simply visit kochaesthetics.com and click FREE VIRTUAL CONSULT in the upper right corner.
WHAT ARE PDO THREADS USED FOR?
PDO threads are used in a wide variety of ways in the aesthetic and cosmetic industry. Some of these include:
- Reducing acne scarring
- Smoothing crepey, saggy skin
- Addressing radial lip lines
- Addressing flabellar frown lines
- Enhancing cheeks
- Repairing nasolabial folds
- Addressing oral commissures
- Neck lifting
- Marionette line adjustments
- Long-term collagen building
HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF A PDO
>> Combine it with Botox. These tiny PDO threads can be used in conjunction with dermal fillers, solid filler lifting PDO threads and botulinum toxin injections, or they can be used as a standalone service.
WHAT ABOUT AFTERCARE?
After a PDO Thread treatment, there’s not an extensive list of aftercare or maintenance you need to complete. In general, you should avoid dental treatments, getting facials, high-intensity exercising, and exfoliation for a few weeks after your treatment. Additionally, you should avoid putting too much pressure or strain on one side of your face. This means you may want to sleep on your back for a while.

WOMEN OF LAW LAW WOMEN
Burns, Brashier & Johnson LLC
Burns, Brashier & Johnson’s commitment to the community begins and ends with our promise to fiercely advocate on behalf of our clients. Client satisfaction is of the utmost importance, which is why we make ourselves accessible and available. But it’s not all about litigation. We also give to our community by volunteering and teaching. Anybody can write a check, and although we donate money to various causes, the most important thing we donate is our time.
FINDING BALANCE
Balancing work and a personal life can be tricky. Instead of counting the time, I make the time count. When I’m working for my clients, which incidentally encompasses far greater hours than the doors of the law firm are open, I give clients 100% effort for 100% of the time I dedicate to their cause. The inverse holds true for my husband and children. When my time is dedicated to them, I’m all in. They get all of me for every second that belongs to them in to my role as wife and mother. Balance is having unflinching commitment to both my profession and my family.

HOW DO FIND BALANCE?
I love this question!! Balance is the ultimate goal. But one thing I have learned is that Balance doesn’t mean everything is equal. Prioritizing my time and working on things that truly make a difference that only I can do and outsourcing the rest so that I can spend more time with my family, friends and especially my granddaughter.

FINDING BALANCE
I honestly haven’t figured it out, but I can say that being raised by my grandparents and seeing their level of involvement and commitment in the community was impactful. They showed me the importance of giving back and making changes, and their values and beliefs ultimately shaped me into who I am today. In fact, had it not been for them and the people in the community that influenced my life at such a young age, I’m not sure how things would have turned out for me. I truly believe that you must carve out space in your life to do things for others around you (no matter how big or how small). And, sometimes the work / life balance thing might not work, but I always want to spend my time doing good.
COMMITMENT TO OUR COMMUNITY
Each one of us has the potential to lead and affect change. As we see through the more than 40,000 hours of service invested in our community annually by League members, the possibilities are limitless when we come together. What makes the Junior League of Birmingham different is not just our passion for and dedication to service, but the League provides volunteer training, giving us the tools and desire to better serve our community all while developing the potential of our members.
We are a group of passionate women who desire to have an impact in our community. We are a group of movers and shakers who embraces change and leverages our talents to support the needs of our community. I also value the diverse ways of how we have impact our community by helping to Build A Better Birmingham.

Beth: My goal is to always be present wherever I am, in a meeting, at a ballgame, or dinner with my family. Of course, it’s not always perfect, but I try to make this balance a daily priority and remind myself why both aspects of my life are important.
Kimberly: Having a balance as a working mom is so important, and I’ve learned how to set boundaries. Being consistently present and giving my best at work and home can be a challenge, but it can be done. My family is my most important priority, and I always strive to leave a positive influence while with my family and at work.

FINDING BALANCE
Work / Life Balance is honesty something we are keenly aware of and constantly working on in our practice. We feel this makes us better advocates for our own clients and keeps our personal lives in balance. Intentional Time Management is critical to our continued efforts to keep this in check.

FINDING BALANCE
Work and life balance is something I am alway working on. One way I’m finding balance is by rearranging my work hours so that I can be off by 3 o’clock. This way I can go to some of my son’s after-school activities. My other trick is the crockpot. It’s my favorite kitchen device.
Davenport Dental and Wellness Center enjoys investing in the overall community via monetary donations to nonprofit organizations. Also, we are ardent supporters of other local businesses and entrepreneurs. For instance, many of our patients are local artists, and I adore their work so much that we have covered our walls with their paintings and photographs.

FINDING BALANCE
I like to take two long breaks a year to travel somewhere new and exciting and spend time with family. During work weeks, I try to practice what I call micro self-care - early morning walks, sit down dinner each night with my husband (no cell phones) and reading before bed.
As members of the Chamber of Commerce, we refer people to local businesses. We utilize local businesses when possible. Support events at Mt. Brook High School, and this year we’re participating in A Novel Tasing to benefit the Birmingham Public Library

FINDING BALANCE
My daily morning rhythm helps provide balance in my life. I wake early to read, pray and exercise. Taking this morning time to focus on “me” kick starts my ability to focus on work and family. I find comfort in routines!

A majority of our clients are from the greater Birmingham area and are passionate about serving in the community. We share that passion and our attorneys are honored to serve on local charity boards with clients and friends. In addition to being active in local churches, our members have served on the boards and the firm and members have financially supported the work of Restoration Academy, King’s Home, Lifeline, Lovelady Center, Exceptional Foundation, Big Oak Ranch and M-POWER Ministries–just a few of our long standing charity partners. Everything Old is New Again
Ah, “mansplaining.” What a wonderful thing. Who better than a middleaged white dude to heap praise upon the women in the wine world? Best to spare us all the embarrassment and proceed on to this wonderful list of delicious wines made by talented women.
VILLA ANTINORI TOSCANA ROSSO, from Antinori
The Antinori family has been making wine for 26 generations. Yes, you read that correctly, twenty-six generations. Their heritage dates back to 1385. This venerable Italian institution is now run by three talented ladies; Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia. The story of Italian wine simply could not be considered, much less told, without the contributions of the Antinori family. The current generation is bring us a fantastic new chapter, one written by the women of Antinori.
MCBRIDE SISTERS SAUVIGNON BLANC
Andréa McBride was a 16-yearold living in foster care in New Zealand when she got a phone call from her biological dad in Alabama. He told her he was dying of cancer and wanted to do one last thing before passing: connect her to another daughter he had, her sister Robin, of whom she had never heard.
In the twenty years since that call Andréa and Robin not only met but in 2005 founded what is now the largest Black-owned wine company in the United States. Amazing women, amazing wines, and an amazing story.
3 DEGREES PINOT NOIR, from Maysara
The Momtazi sisters are forces of nature. The eldest, Tahmiene, has been the primary winemaker at Maysara since she was old enough to legally take charge. She is a natural. It is quite astonishing, and rare, to have such skill and talent in winemaking at such a young age. The Three Degrees Pinot Noir is an unbelievable value, and a tremendous introduction to the talents of Tahmiene. This has been a favorite of ours year-in and year-out. We are confident that you will be impressed as well.
CENTORRI MOSCATO
Gotta finish with a touch of sweetness. After watching generations of men make Moscato, Elenora decided to strike out on her own and take the ladies of the family with her. Their winery, Centorri, is fully owned and managed by women: estate manager and winemaker Eleonora Brangero, along with her mother Emiliana and grandmother Camilla—known as the “ladies of Moscato.” They make some unashamedly delightful Moscato. Treat yourself.
