ANSWER :::

QUESTION :::

WHAT ARE THE DOS AND DON’TS FOR A CHRISTMAS PARTY?

Do make sure you attend. Not showing will be recognized. Don’t get wasted. This one seems obvious, but once that buzz kicks in, you may take it too far without realizing it. Know your limit before you arrive. Do keep conversations positive and friendly in all subjects. Remember, it’s work. You’re not hanging out with all your buddies, so it’s not the time to let off some steam. Don’t wear anything out of character. An office party is not the time to experiment with your wardrobe and show up making a scene. Do avoid conversations on politics, sex and religion. If your coworkers don’t know where you stand politically, that’s a good thing. Don’t monopolize people or conversations. A simple social rule is to make sure you’re talking less than you’re listening. That being said, do be involved in conversations. You don’t have to be the life of the party, but standing there not saying a word can be creepy. Do be yourself. Everyone there knows you, so now is not the time to try to be someone you’re not.

Our Favorite Christmas Movies That Aren’t Christmas Movies So, we all know about It’s a Wonderful Life, Christmas Vacation and Elf. And we all know they’ll be on cable every day for the next month. But what about the movies that can put you in the holiday spirit that only have a related Christmas theme? Here’s some of our favorites.

SMOKE (1995)

This independent character-driven movie stars William Hurt as a broken Brooklyn writer and Harvey Keitel (Auggie) as a cigarette and tobacco shop owner with a fascinating daily hobby. The story is a slice of life that centers around the smoke shop, and the real-world characters that frequent it.

TRADING PLACES (1983)

Eddie Murphy’s follow-up to 48 Hrs helped launch him to super-stardom. His street-con artist character Billy Ray Valentine gets thrown into the world of the stuck-up, yuppie partner at Duke & Duke Investments, Louis Winthorpe (Dan Aykroyd). As the polar opposites switch positions in their lives (arranged by the Duke’s arrogant “science experience,”) the comedy platform unfolds.

CHRISTMAS THEME: There’s not much in the setting that has a holiday theme, but

Paul (William Hurt) gets a freelance job from the NY Times to write a Christmas story. Drawing a blank he asks Auggie if he knows any. Auggie tells him a “true story” that connects to the holiday spirit in a heart-warming but different way.

CHRISTMAS THEME:

Set in Philadelphia from November to January, the story has a revealing Christmas party, and the movie’s climax centers around the New Year’s crop report.

MOVIE TAGLINE: The most precious things in life are lighter than air.

YOU’VE GOT MAIL (1998)

Meg Ryan’s locally owned, struggling bookstore is threatened by the evil megabookstore owned by Tom Hanks. Through anonymous online flirting the two enemies don’t realize who’s who. A classic chick-flick that works so well due to the chemistry between Hanks and Ryan.

BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY (2001)

The story of the modern female singleton set in London. Lonely, depressed Renee Zellweger finally finds true love in Mark Darcy through the ups and downs of player Daniel Cleaver. CHRISTMAS THEME: The movie bookends with Christmas parties hosted by the Darcys. Included is Mark’s ridiculous Christmas sweater at the beginning, and his hideous Christmas tie at the end. BEST LINE: Tom: “Well done Bridge, four hours of

careful cooking and a feast of blue soup, omelet and marmalade.”

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990)

This unique, warm, dark, romantic comedy is a Tim Christmas in New York as far as backdrop. Burton original. Fantastic sets dot BEST LINE: Kathleen: “People are always telling you that change is a good thing. the entire film, But all they’re really saying is that something you didn’t want to happen at all... has where the awkward, happened.” not quite human Edward (Johnny Depp) falls for Kim (Winona Ryder) the Bruce Willis’s John McClane saves his wife, his marriage, good girl dating the bad guy Jim–played surprisingly perfectly by Anthony Michael Hall. countless office workers, and single-handedly annihilates a dozen The supporting cast steals the show with the seductive unfaithful housewife, Joyce, and or so terrorists in one of the greatest action movies ever. Kim’s over-the-top stereotypical loving parents.

BEST LINE: Billy Ray: “I’m a sexy man. I’m very sexy. People come up to me and say ‘Billy Ray you’re so sexy,’ and not understand my sexuality.”

CHRISTMAS THEME: It’s tough to beat

CHRISTMAS THEME: Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis

opens the movie, and it all goes down at the fictious Nakatomi Corporation during their Christmas Party.

BEST LINE: John to the 911 supervisor: “Does it sound like I’m

DIE HARD (1988)

ordering a pizza!?”

ASK AN EXPERT

Housing inventory is so low right now. Is this a normal fall/winter cycle or something more significant? And what are the housing forecasts for the beginning of 2017? “Low inventory pushes sales prices higher, but September to October numbers differed only slightly, showing that the market has continued its 2016 trend of 6 months of inventory. The forecasts for 2017: waves of Gen Y-ers are ready for home ownership, 1.5 million new homes predicted for construction, and a hot forecast of 6 million in existing home sales. The new word and watch for 2017: SURBAN - areas that offer that blend of urban and suburban living.” ABOUT

BEFORE THE RING

The season is here, Holiday music is playing in the stores, and your family and friends are making plans to celebrate together. 40% of couples get engaged between the months of November and February. Your loved one may not have popped the question yet, but for many couples, engagement is right around the corner. We’ve created a preengagement checklist to help you be proactive in your wedding plans, so you can relax and enjoy just being engaged.

1

Drop hints about the bling on the ring. You’ve had the “marriage talk,” and you may have given your significant other hints about what kind of ring style you love. Ask them to visit some jewelry stores with you around town, or show them some styles you like. This way you’re sure to get the ring that you love almost as much as them!

2

Talk it out together.

Get educatedfind out what you like.

It’s good to be on the same page about what you want for you big day. If you know engagement is coming soon, go ahead and start discussing the big picture for your wedding. Some points to consider are: Do you want a big, or small wedding? What’s your budget? Do you want a destination wedding? Is dancing your style, or would you rather have a sit down dinner? Narrowing down what you like now will help guide you once the planning begins.

4

Iron City is the premier venue for downtown Birmingham weddings. Complete with a dance floor and stage, Iron City is the perfect combination of polished and party for your big day! Call us today to make a reservation! Phone: (205).202.5483

3

Once you’ve established the big picture of what you and your other half want for your wedding day, it’s time to start educating yourself about what’s out there. Get a Pinterest account and start collecting ideas on your board. Flip through some wedding magazines, and get online on the best wedding websites. Collect all the ideas and details you like in one place, so you can refer to them when the big planning begins.

Get the low down from your friends. Connect with your married friends and ask them about their experiences. Ask them what worked and what didn’t work. What was the best part of the day, or what would they have done differently? Your friends can give you honest insight to help you untie the wedding planning knots before you tie the knot!

Do some shopping, window style. The first things to mark off your planning list are the venue and the dress. Don’t be afraid to make some appointments at different venues before you actually get engaged. Wedding locations tend to book up about a year out, so having an idea about the venue before you are engaged will speed up the planning and help guarantee you get your top choice!

Sierra Nevada Celebration

Einstok Doppelbock

($12.49/4pk)

($9.49/6pk)

($12.49/6pk)

($8.99/6pk)

This decadent collaboration between New Belgium and Ben & Jerry’s is a golden ale inspired by one of Ben & Jerry’s best-selling ice creams. Big doughy sweetness melds with milk chocolate flavors that fade into a nice clean finish. This brew is rich without becoming cloyingly sweet. Pair this beer with desserts such as tiramisu, raw chocolate mousse, and of course Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.

Dark, heavy, roasted coffee notes are up front and personal in this beer. A lightly tan head grips the edges of the glass. This beer is a coffee lover’s dream. It is brewed with bitter and imported chocolates along with two types of coffee. This beer is made for chocolate desserts, as the coffee will come forward and really complement the dish.

ABOUT

12 T O W N

This is a beautiful fresh hopped ale from California. One of the few IPAs that come out this time of year, The beer has a stunning red hue that reminds you of all the red of Christmas. But don’t wait too long on this beer because it is meant to be drunk fresh. Citrus and pine dominate the aroma and the taste. This beer will go great with turkey, dressing, and manchego cheese.

Based on the German doppelbock style nicknamed “liquid bread” for its heartiness, the Icelandic brewery Einstok releases this dark amber lager once a year to warm you up in the winter months. Sweet toasty malt dominates the aroma, with notes of toffee, molasses, and subtle chocolate in the flavor. Pairs well with short ribs, marinated duck, and creamy cheeses such as gruyere and brie.

($9.99/22oz)

($8.99/6pk)

($23.49/4pk or $12.99/750ml)

($16.99/6pk)

Frankenhammer is a highly limited release from the Huntsville brewery, Yellowhammer. This brew is a riff on their Belgian strong dark ale, Dark Hammer, whereby they take the finished beer and additionally age it in charred cherry wood barrels. Huge notes of vanilla, dark fruit, and oak flow into a smooth boozy warm finish. This brew goes great with plum sauce pork chops, roasted rib, creme brulee, and bold cheeses such as smoked gouda, Limburger, and havarti.

Hailing from Belgium, this beer is perfect for the cold nights of winter. A quadrupel-style beer with a hint of a spicy, mint-like flavor. You will get notes of alcohol warmth, licorice, and almonds. This beer is complex, and weighs in at a hefty 10% ABV. Great for sipping by the fire. Pairs well with Trappiststyle cheeses, or game hen with wild rice.

One of the most popular beers of the winter, this is a holiday “no brainer. This beer is brewed with Texas peaches and pecans. The style is a dunkelweizen, which is a dark German wheat beer, and is great for cold nights. This beer is an easy sipper, and pairs well with ginger salmon and pork tenderloin.

ABOUT

13 T O W N

This winter seasonal is another of the most popular beers of winter. Inspired by Mexican hot chocolate, it combines chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, peppers, coffee and cocoa. The beer has aromas of roasted coffee and a slight hint of the spices and peppers. The pepper is present but not too hot. The spices dance on your palate as the beer finishes. This beer will go well with bacon-wrapped figs, lamb chops, and ice cream (some in the ice cream and some to sip).

The thought of wearing two gowns on your wedding day is a new idea. While I am always happy to help a bride find two gowns for her big day, I also like to remind my brides that every dress change will mean time away from the fun of your wedding day.

What are some of your recommendations or advice for beach/destination wedding gowns?

Are girls trending more towards sleek modern styles or more traditional? karaleigh@whitedressesboutique.com:

Our brides tend to select traditional gowns with a modern twist. Traditional can encompass so many different looks and our brides are pretty varied on what they select. I would say the most common word we hear to describe the look our brides are selecting is timeless.

My advice for brides looking for the perfect beach or destination look is to choose what you want! I absolutely hate when brides try to select a gown solely because they think it looks like their venue - and that includes beach and destination weddings. Choose the gown you love and it will work in whatever venue you select. My favorite beach look is actually a ball gown, which is totally different than what most people expect for the beach! We also had a bride who did a five foot train on the beach - the pictures were phenomenal!

Accessories are the best way to make a gown fit into the theme of a bride’s wedding. I have witnessed a gown that might not be considered perfect for an outdoor wedding completely transform into the perfect look for an outdoor wedding based on accessory decisions such as veils, belts, headpieces, boleros, etc. Like the gowns, we are seeing a lot of accessories incorporate colors. One of my personal favorite belts in the shop has blush crystals in it. In my opinion, accessories are the perfect way to make a gown the bride’s own. in. You look your best when you are really happy and comfortable. Many brides feel like this is their time to step out of their box and while that can work for some, I have found that most girls are happiest when they look and feel like themselves! Today, there are so many different types of engagement rings. From a classic solitaire look to a three-stone setting or pave mounting, brides can create what they have envisioned their entire lives in the DIAMONDS DIRECT showroom. We have selected six of the most ‘popular’ or prominent engagement ring styles that we see and highlighted them here.

THE CLASSIC SOLITAIRE >

If you are looking to highlight your center diamond by itself, this is the perfect style for you! This style is great for any shape diamond and can be modified by the type of basket holding the diamond. The solitaire style also allows you to select the wedding band of your choice as anything will compliment the ring.

THREE-STONE <

This style is said to represent your past, present and future and features a center diamond accented by a second diamond on each side of the center. The three-stone style allows endless choices because all three stones do not need to be the same. This style is especially popular with a diamond in the center and blue sapphires on the sides.

HALO >

This is a very popular style today most noted by a ring, or ‘halo’, of smaller diamonds framing the center diamond. The halo style is often used to make the center diamond appear larger, but is also used as an elegant accent to any shaped diamond.

SHARED PRONG <

This style features diamonds set in prongs, which are shared by the diamond next to it. This look is great because it shows less metal and more sparkle!

PAVE <

Considered a more antique look, the pave style features tiny diamonds set into place with small beads of metal. This type of setting creates a very sparkly or glittery look and often has diamonds on all three sides of the ring.

CHANEL SET <

This style is considered to be a more modern, polished look. In this style, there are diamonds set into the setting- without the use of prongscreating a seamless, contemporary look. The channel setting is particularly for women who tend to be a bit more rough on their jewelry.

DÉCOR/FLOWERS:

Girls love inspiration for finding their look and celebrities are a great source. After Kate Middleton wore long sleeves, we received tons of girls asking for gowns with lace sleeves. In recent months, we have had a lot of brides asking for blushers after Kim K’s wedding to Kanye. Before Kim wore it, girls weren’t loving the blusher idea in our shop. We know we will be hearing from a lot of girls who want to look similar to the new Mrs. Clooney since the recent wedding of the most famous bachelors in our country!
